While surfing the web for the latest and greatest in curly beauty, we discovered a clever little “doughnut” hair tool used to make perfectly shaped, full, structured buns. We loved how easy this thing made bun styling, but also just how easy it would be to make on our own. So, we did! Here’s how you can make your own “doughnut” to style your own curly bun.
How to Make & Style Your Doughnut
- Sock It to Me. Cut the feet off of a pair of socks to leave an open tube.
- Roll Your Doughnut. Roll the tubes down leaving a hole in the center like a doughnut. If you want a smaller doughnut, use just one tube. For a larger doughnut, use two or three depending on your preference
- Pull it Together. Pull your hair into a ponytail where you’d like your curly bun to be placed. Pull the ponytail through the center of the doughnut so that the doughnut now rests at the base of the ponytail
What You Need
- 1-2 socks
- Super glue
- Scissors
- Ponytail holder
- Bobby pins
- Scissors
- Secure and Finish. Fold the hair over the doughnut and secure with bobby pins around the base. For a messier look, leave ends curly and free. For a sleeker finish, tuck ends all the way beneath the doughnut bun to hide them.
For hold, shine, and a frizz free finish, prep the hair with a leave-in conditioner, use a gel to hold hair in place and finish with a serum for high-impact gloss.
Custom Color
Select your socks to blend best with your hair color in case a strand moves and the doughnut peeks through.
Final Thoughts
We loved the final look so much, and how easy it was to create, that we grabbed another curly staffer to try it out on her hair, this time doing a low, side-swept bun for a different look. All in all this is a great way to create an elegant curly bun quickly, easily, and cheaply.
For those of you with thinner hair, this style makes it look like you have way more hair than you do! It is a win all around!
