Anyone in a salon chair knows it can be difficult to find Black natural hair stylists and salons. Effectively working with textured hair requires skill, dexterity, and a deep understanding of how to manipulate each texture best.
The problem is that there are a disproportionately low number of professional stylists who understand how to work across all hair types—and, more specifically, the intricacies of Black hair—which means people with natural textures are often left out of the conversation. Most stylists outside of the Black community have little to no education about Black hair.
The bigger issue is that many stylists are not taught to work with and appreciate curly hair, let alone coily, or kinky hair types. We’re often left to deal with the lack of education and salon service around natural hair, and on top of that, we might find ourselves in a situation where we’re left feeling demeaned and belittled at the hands of a stylist trying to put all textures into one box and method.
After being frustrated that hair school curriculums weren’t adequately training stylists on natural hair, Aisha Gatlin, who founded the Beautiful Luxe School of Cosmetology, said “Stylists are educated in pretty much one hair type because they don’t need to know more for their state exam—but when they get into the salon, it’s like they’re back in beauty school again.” Only 19 states require specific training for it.
The focus should not be on passing the state exam but on truly leaving with the knowledge to manage all hair types. Without the foundation of what constitutes healthy hair for a range of textures, stylists aren’t equipped with the full scope of knowledge they need to help their clients. More educators who are well-versed in all hair textures are needed.
With all that being said, I’m sharing Black natural hair stylists and salons to follow and support in this article. To celebrate the work of the talented and underrepresented Black hair artists, you can start by supporting their work on social media.

Mastering the art of diffusing can make all the difference in hair care. This comprehensive guide is your go-to for everything from understanding your hair’s basic needs to mastering diffusing techniques tailored for fine hair, curls, coils, and waves. Whether you’re aiming to enhance your natural texture or looking for ways to minimize frizz, the right approach to diffusing can elevate your hair game.
Table of contents
Type 1 (Straight)
- Characteristics: This hair type ranges from pin-straight (1A) to straight with a bit more body (1B) and slight bends (1C). It’s known for its glossy shine and smooth texture.
- Needs: While Type 1 hair can effortlessly achieve a sleek look, it may need help with volume and quickly become oily. Lightweight volumizing products and occasional clarifying treatments can combat these issues, ensuring the hair remains lively and fresh.
Type 2 (Wavy)
- Characteristics: Type 2 hair weaves between straight and curly, embodying loose, tousled waves (2A) to more defined S-shaped waves (2B) and ending with pronounced, almost curly waves (2C).
- Needs: Wavy hair is prone to frizz and may lack definition. Hydration is vital, but so is avoiding heavy products that can weigh down waves. Light mousses or gel-based products can enhance texture without sacrificing volume, helping to define and control frizz.
Type 3 (Curly)
- Characteristics: From loose, bouncy curls (3A) to tighter spirals (3B) and densely packed corkscrews (3C), Type 3 hair is full of volume and personality.
- Needs: Moisture is non-negotiable for curly hair, which tends to be drier and more prone to frizz than straighter types. Deep conditioning treatments, leave-in conditioners, and curl-defining creams help maintain curl shape and health, providing hydration and reducing frizz.
Type 4 (Coily)
Characteristics: Type 4 hair features tightly coiled curls in a zigzag pattern (4A), very tight, almost crinkly coils (4B), and tightly kinked hair with less visible curl definition (4C). This hair type exhibits the most shrinkage and is incredibly delicate.
- Needs: Coily hair demands significant moisture and protective styling to prevent breakage and maintain hair health. Rich conditioners, butter, and oils keep strands hydrated and flexible. Gentle handling and minimal manipulation are crucial to protect its fragile nature.
Recognizing your hair type’s unique characteristics and needs, you can adopt a hair care routine that addresses common concerns and enhances your hair’s natural texture.
The Art of Diffusing
What is Diffusing? A diffuser attachment disperses the airflow of a hairdryer, allowing for a gentle, even distribution of heat. This technique reduces frizz, enhances natural texture, and can be a gentler drying option for all hair types.
Why Diffuse? Beyond reducing frizz, diffusing can help shape and define waves, curls, and coils. It offers a more controlled drying process that respects your hair’s natural texture. It’s particularly beneficial for hair prone to dryness or damage, as it minimizes direct heat exposure.
Tailored Diffusing Techniques and Product Recommendations
Here, we delve into the specifics of Wavy (Type 2), Curly (Type 3), and Coily (Type 4) hair types, providing focused product recommendations and detailed application instructions to help you achieve optimal results.
For Wavy Hair (Type 2)
Reel Source: @sophiemariegraf / TikTok
Product Recommendations:
Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer
A lightweight primer that shields hair from heat and UV damage while minimizing frizz.
Herbal Essence Totally Twisted Cur-Boosting Mousse
Helps boost and define without heaviness, enhancing the natural texture of wavy hair.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard
Defines and holds waves without creating stiffness, ensuring waves are bouncy and full of life.
Ouidad Mongongo Oil
Locks in moisture and adds shine.
Application & Diffusing Instructions:
1. Start with the plopping technique after applying your styling products. This involves wrapping your wet, product-coated hair in a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel. Plopping helps set your waves’ pattern and removes excess moisture, reducing drying time and heat exposure.
2. For added root volume, insert duckbill clips at the roots. This creates lift and volume at the base of your waves, enhancing your hairstyle’s overall shape and body.
3. Begin diffusing with your head upright, then alternate tilting it to each side to ensure even drying and volume distribution. Avoid flipping your head upside down if volume is not your primary goal, as this can overly stretch your roots upward.
4. Focus the diffuser on the roots and mid-lengths rather than the ends, which are your hair’s oldest and most fragile parts. This approach helps prevent damage and breakage.
5. Opt for a higher heat setting for quicker drying, but avoid overdoing it. Balance quicker drying times with the health of your hair.
6. Finish with a cool shot from your dryer to seal the hair cuticle, enhance shine, and reduce frizz.
7. Apply oil as your finishing product to add moisture and shine. Dispense two pumps into your hands, rub them together, and then gently scrunch the oil into the ends of your waves to seal in moisture and add a glossy finish.
For Curly Hair (Type 3)
Reel Source: @ovegancurls / TikTok
Product Recommendations:
Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Leave-In Conditioner
Infuses moisture and strength, essential for maintaining healthy curls.
Curls Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Jelly
Keep curls frizz-free and defined throughout the day.
Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil
Boosts shine, adds softness, and controls frizz.
Application & Diffusing Instructions:
- Product Application: After showering, generously apply the leave-in conditioner to wet hair. Add a layer of curl-enhancing gel and scrunching to encourage curl formation.
- Diffusing: Attach the diffuser, set it to a medium temperature, and gently cup sections of your curls, lifting them towards the scalp. This method reduces frizz and helps define your curls without excess manipulation.
- Finishing: Continue diffusing until your curls are mostly dry, then switch to cool air to set your style. For extra shine, scrunch a small amount of lightweight oil into the ends of your curls.
For Coily Hair (Type 4)
Reel Source: @culturallycoiled / TikTok
Product Recommendations:
Pattern Beauty by Tracee Ellis Ross Leave-In Conditioner
Deeply hydrates and detangles, preparing coily hair for styling.
EDEN BodyWorks Coconut Shea Curl Defining Crème
This is for added definition and frizz control.
Camille Rose Curl Maker
Enhances the natural pattern of coils with moisture and definition.
Application & Diffusing Instructions:
- Product Application: On freshly washed and detangled hair, layer the leave-in conditioner followed by the styling cream and gel. Work the products through with your fingers to ensure even distribution.
- Diffusing: Using a low heat setting, hover the diffuser around your head, starting at the roots. This gentle approach helps to dry your hair without disrupting the natural coil pattern or causing shrinkage.
Alternative Diffusing Method:
- Stretch diffusing can be effective for those seeking to elongate their coils or reduce shrinkage. After applying your leave-in and styling products:
- Gently stretch a section of your hair with one hand while aiming the diffuser at this stretched section with the other. This method applies direct heat to elongate the hair temporarily.
- Rotate through all sections of your hair, ensuring each is evenly dried. This technique is beneficial for achieving a more extended look or for styles that require stretched hair as a foundation.
- Finishing: Once your hair reaches about 80% dryness, use either diffusing method or let it air dry thoroughly. This approach helps to lock in moisture, ensuring your coils remain hydrated and defined.
- To add volume and finalize your style, gently fluff the roots with your fingers or a hair pick. Doing this gently avoids frizz and maintains the definition of your coils.
By following these tailored recommendations and techniques, you can enhance your hair’s natural beauty and texture, whether it’s wavy, curly, or coily. Product application and diffusing techniques are key to achieving frizz-free, defined, and healthy-looking hair.

Selecting the appropriate diffuser is critical in tailoring your hair care routine to match your hair’s specific needs. Each diffuser is designed with unique features that cater to different hair types, textures, and styling preferences. Transitioning from vision to reality wasn’t without its challenges. As a self-funded, women-owned, and Latinx-founded company, Rizos Curls grappled with the perennial startup challenge of limited marketing funds. Prado’s approach to overcoming these obstacles was rooted in creativity and resilience. “From the beginning, the biggest challenge was having additional cash for marketing activities. I’ve always believed that changing our hair color is one of the many ways we women express ourselves, showcasing our personality and current mood through the spectrum of colors we choose. My journey with my curly hair, filled with triumphs and setbacks, is a testament to this adventurous spirit.
Starting with tentative blonde highlights, moving on to a boldly into the realm of reds, and eventually returning to my natural black, each phase of my hair color adventure has taught me invaluable lessons. It’s been a path of self-discovery, resilience, and developing a deeper connection with my curls.
This narrative isn’t just about switching hues; it’s about embracing every aspect of our hair’s potential and the profound insights gained along the way. Along this colorful path, I’ve discovered hair products that have become essential allies, guiding me toward healthier, happier curls.
Table of contents
The Blonde Ambition
My curly hair journey began in 2016, motivated by the desire to heal my hair from the extensive damage caused by years of chemical treatments and heat styling. Determined to revive what was left of my hair, I embraced a healthier hair care regimen.
Just four months into this new journey, I couldn’t resist the temptation to add color to my hair. Aware of the potential risks coloring posed to my delicate curls, I sought a solution to minimize damage. This led me to discover Olaplex, a product known for preserving hair’s structural integrity during coloring. I made it a point to discuss using Olaplex with my stylist, emphasizing its importance in my hair treatment plan.
I committed to a rigorous routine to support my hair’s health further and ensure a positive outcome from the coloring process. This included weekly deep conditioning to moisturize and nourish my hair deeply and protein treatments designed to strengthen and repair any potential damage caused by coloring. Together, these steps formed a comprehensive strategy to achieve a successful hair transformation, balancing the desire for new hair color with the need to maintain healthy, resilient curls. By the following year, my efforts had paid off, and my hair’s health was fully restored, as seen in the photo below.
However, I hadn’t realized that my stylist planned to use a stronger bleach for this next step. This led to significant damage to my curls, making them brittle, prone to breakage, and excessively dry. Although the photo below captures the visible damage—noticeably stretched-out curls—it fails to convey the full extent of the dryness. My hair’s texture had deteriorated to the point where it felt like straw, devoid of moisture and elasticity, illustrating a cautionary tale about the potential risks of aggressive bleaching.
This challenging setback was undeniably devastating, yet it was a powerful catalyst for me to reevaluate and strengthen my approach to hair care. In response to the damage, I doubled my commitment to returning my hair to health. It was then time to upgrade my routine to include deep conditioning sessions twice weekly to replenish and hydrate my curls more intensely. I also maintained the regimen of regular protein treatments to rebuild and fortify my hair’s structure.
In my quest for solutions, I incorporated three essential products into my regimen with a fresh perspective. First, I began using Righteous Roots Oils as a pre-poo treatment. While this product wasn’t new to me, applying it before shampooing marked a novel and effective method in my routine. It provided my hair with essential nutrients and extra protection during washing.
Additionally, I discovered the Roux Porosity Control Corrector and Conditioner, which specifically targeted my hair’s extreme dryness by improving its ability to retain moisture. Lastly, I explored the traditional practice of rice water rinses, which are renowned for their hair-strengthening properties. Together, these steps were instrumental in reviving my curls (as seen in the photo below), demonstrating the importance of adaptability and targeted care in overcoming hair health obstacles.
This experience taught me the importance of clear communication with my hairstylist, highlighting how crucial it is to discuss and understand every product and technique used in my hair care process.
The Bold Move to Red
In 2019, the call for change whispered once more, guiding me toward the vibrant allure of red. The transition was smooth, with no initial damage to report. However, maintaining red hair proved to be its own labyrinth. Toner became my constant companion, though it was an inconsistent relationship. Despite my efforts, the red hues faded, never returning to their original luster.

This chapter taught me the necessity of understanding the maintenance landscape before diving into a new color. Research became my beacon, guiding me through the complexities of red hair upkeep.
Return to Blonde and the Ultimate Price
Relocating to a new city led to a chance encounter at the gym with a woman whose blonde, curly hair was the vibrant shade I had been dreaming of. This serendipitous meeting reignited my desire for blonde highlights, prompting me to pursue that perfect shade again. Initially, I was thrilled with the results, but soon, I longed for a more consistent, all-over blonde look.
Motivated by the stunning blonde curls of a woman I met at the gym, I sought out her colorist to achieve a similar vibrant shade. The colorist proposed using distinct bleaching formulas to address my naturally black hair and the previously highlighted sections. The goal was to achieve a consistent, all-over blonde hue.
Unfortunately, this intricate plan resulted in significant and unforeseen negative consequences. A few months later, my hair began to fall out in large quantities, an alarming situation that proved resistant to my extensive care regimen. Despite my diligent use of protein treatments, deep conditioning, and K18 Leave-In Hair Treatment—a product I chose based on its clinical reputation for repairing bleach-damaged hair—it seemed my hair’s condition had deteriorated beyond the point of repair by these methods. This experience underscored that some damage might be too extensive for even the most highly recommended products to mitigate.
This unfortunate turn of events taught me a valuable lesson about the potential hazards of intensive chemical processing. It underscored the necessity of exercising caution and restraint in hair coloring endeavors. Additionally, I realized that I had overlooked my initial instincts about the colorist’s method for lightening my hair. Deep down, I sensed this approach might not suit my hair’s condition, so I proceeded. This served as a reminder of the importance of listening to one’s intuition, especially regarding decisions affecting our hair’s health. As it turned out, my hair was simply unprepared for such a drastic change.
Embracing Natural Black
Exhausted by the color carousel, I’ve returned to my roots—figuratively and literally. Transitioning to my natural black hair symbolizes a return to simplicity and health.
In the image, you can see the current state of my hair as I’m transitioning from blonde back to my natural black. The faded blonde ends are growing out, while my natural black color is reasserting itself from the roots. It’s a challenging process that doesn’t always look as graceful as I’d like, but I’m committed to avoiding the “big chop.” Instead, I’ve let the black curls grow longer and trim off the blonde ends when I’ve achieved a length that satisfies me. This phase of my hair journey may not be picture-perfect, but it reflects patience and my personal growth.
Now, on to the second aspect of my journey:
The transformation of my hair’s porosity from high to low has been an unexpected twist, prompting me to rethink my products. I’ve turned to a new lineup that includes Righteous Roots Leave-In Conditioner, Bounce Curl Leave-In Conditioner, and Jessicurl products, all of which have proven incredibly effective. These products have seamlessly integrated into my hair care routine, addressing the unique needs of my changing hair texture and porosity. It’s been like reconnecting with an old friend who has changed over time and relearning what they like and dislike. Adapting to these changes has not only improved the health of my curls but also deepened my understanding and appreciation for them as they evolve.
Product Recommendations Through the Journey
Throughout this journey, several products have stood out for their restorative and nurturing properties:
1. Olaplex No. 3: A beacon during my initial foray into blonde, safeguarding my hair’s integrity.
2. Righteous Roots Oils: A savior in the aftermath of over-bleaching, fostering recovery.
3. Roux Porosity Control Corrector and Conditioner: Key in managing my hair’s porosity post-damage.
4. Righteous Roots Leave-In Conditioner, Bounce Curl Leave-In Conditioner, and Jessicurl Products have become indispensable in my routine. Together, they create a powerhouse trio that deeply nourishes my natural curls. Each product serves a distinct purpose, addressing the specific needs and phases of my hair’s health journey. Together, they provide a well-rounded regimen that ensures my curls receive the holistic care and attention they deserve.
Lessons Learned
This journey has been more than just a series of color changes—it’s been a profound learning experience. My key takeaways have been the importance of gradual transitions, the necessity of ongoing communication with stylists, and the need for a tailored hair care regimen. Each color chapter has imparted wisdom, sometimes learned through hardship but always leading to growth.
Reflecting on this journey, it’s clear that the path to healthy, vibrant curls is both complex and rewarding. It requires patience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to understanding one’s hair. My story, punctuated by triumphs and tribulations, serves as a guide for those navigating the colorful world of curly hair. It reminds us that while the journey may be fraught with challenges, the destination—a head full of healthy, happy curls—is worth every step.

Today, we sit down with Robyn to unravel the story of CURLDAZE and understand how this brand continues to play a vital role in transforming the narrative of natural hair care.
Brand Story and Ideation
What motivated CurlDaze to specifically focus on catering to individuals with curly hair, and how does the brand contribute to celebrating and embracing natural curls?
CURLDAZE specifically focused on curly hair because millions of other people (me included) have curly hair! In the questions and concerns people send me, I found that people struggle with styling and caring for curly hair. Hair thickness and curl pattern can make styling even more frustrating for people.
It’s so much easier to let someone else style your hair at a cost, pull it back in a bun or ponytail, get it braided, straighten it, or put on a wig. These are common options, but your natural hair care sometimes gets neglected. Hair begins to thin, break, and lose its natural luster because it lacks moisture. CURLDAZE products moisturize and protect the hair to prevent such damage.
In addition, natural hair always needs to be promoted as a sign of beauty, and CURLDAZE has given so many people that confidence. One day, I was in a group setting, celebrating something. I can’t remember what right now, but my mom introduced me to this lady who was “rocking her natural curls.”
My mom and I commented on how nice her hair looked. She told us about a product she was using and said, “All my life, all I ever wanted to do was wash my hair and go. Now I can, and I am so happy!” We asked what she was using, and she said, “CURLDAZE”.
Product Evolution
Can you describe the evolution of CurlDaze’s key products and highlight the unique qualities that set them apart in the market?
During my days as an influencer, people would write in saying things like: “What’s causing my hair to break?”, “What can I use to soften my hair and make it shiny?” “I’m using this product that’s drying out my hair. Can you recommend something I can use to dry it?”
I researched what ingredients in some hair care products might cause this damage to the hair and decided not to use them in the products CURLDAZE would produce. Our products are sulfate, paraben, and silicone-free and infused with the amazing Kukui Oil, which has Vitamin A, C, and E to help promote healthier, shinier hair and repair and renew dry, damaged curls.
Innovative Ideation
How does CurlDaze approach the ideation process for developing new products? Are there specific considerations given to addressing diverse curl patterns and textures?
As a researcher, I learned to pay attention to data because it provides a clear picture. Feedback from customers drives the development of new products. We emphasize that whatever the curl pattern or texture, the health of the hair will enhance its beauty. CURLDAZE listens to the people.
Community Connection
CurlDaze has gained prominence within the natural hair community. How does the brand actively engage with its audience, and how does community feedback shape product development?
As mentioned in previous responses, listening and responding to our customers is crucial to our success. In addition to our marketing efforts via email campaigns and other marketing strategies, we donate samples of our products to community events.
We have issued scholarships to deserving students during college events. We donated time and money to a non-profit organization that allows anyone needing food to obtain it for free or at a very minimum price. The message is: “We CARE.” The CURLDAZE mission is to help people everywhere embrace and love their hair; one curl at a time!
Empowering through Education
Beyond products, how does CurlDaze contribute to educating its audience about curly hair care? Are there specific initiatives or resources to empower individuals to embrace their natural curls?
I’ve sat on various panels with other leaders in the hair care industry, and we discussed the current status and future of the natural hair care industry. After the discussions, the audiences posed their questions and concerns, and hopefully, the knowledge we shared helped educate, enlighten, and expand the knowledge base of our communities. The goal is to expand our activity in this area of enlightenment.
Position in the Market
With many products in the natural hair care market, what sets CurlDaze apart, and how does the brand maintain its uniqueness while adapting to industry trends?
People fuel trends. Products that purport their ability to fulfill the needs stemming from the trend pop up. As a result, poor quality products are produced, leaving people disappointed and dissatisfied, lacking hope and waiting for the next trend. CURLDAZE stays steady with quality products that promote healthy hair and sustained confidence.
Partnerships and Collaborations
CurlDaze has collaborated with influencers and other brands. Could you share how these collaborations contribute to the brand’s identity and connection with the natural hair community?
Influencers and collaborations give our customers positive models that share how to nourish and design their hair in fashionable ways. Our partnerships show natural hair in all its glory. Our influencers show how beautiful natural hair is and that beauty, for our customers, strengthens confidence, pride, and assurance that their beautiful natural hair is wanted, desirable, and glorified.
Looking Ahead
As the natural hair care landscape evolves, where do you see CurlDaze heading in the future? Are there upcoming products or initiatives that our audience can look forward to?
As you have probably noticed, I’m saying “we” more than saying “I” so much. Our CURLDAZE Team is growing, and more talented people are being added to our team. They bring tremendous talent and expertise to the business and help us to educate, reach, and serve our customers better. We see CURLDAZE becoming a staple in the hair care industry, a name/brand you can trust and depend on for quality products.
We just launched our new “GroDaze” line of products, which boost shine, strengthen, and repair. They are paraben, sulfate, and silicone-free and contain no drying alcohol.
To wrap up, what message or advice would CurlDaze like to impart to individuals on their curly hair journey, and how does the brand envision continuing to be a positive force within the natural hair community?
There may be one or two things, as humans, that we don’t like about ourselves, and hair should not be one of them. Our hair is our “glory.” Whatever grows out is what we have! We have the option to change it at will, but don’t dislike it and don’t neglect it. It is part of you; each of us is important, valuable, and beautiful. So, nourish your hair. Keep it healthy and walk like a peacock into any room, event, or celebration with pride, confidence, and “CURLS FOR DAZE”!

One-star shines exceptionally bright in the vast expanse of the clean beauty universe, illuminating the path toward innovation, sustainability, and empowerment. This luminary is Act + Acre, a brainchild of Helen Reavey, whose journey from the quaint streets of Armagh, Northern Ireland, to the global beauty stage has redefined the essence of haircare. Embedded in this narrative, as part of our original series “Laying the Roots,” is a tale of ambition, expertise, and a steadfast commitment to treating scalp health as the foundation of hair wellness.
Table of contents
Humble Beginnings to Vision Aspirations
The journey of Act + Acre began in the seemingly ordinary setting of a corner store in Armagh, where a young Helen Reavey’s admiration for her father’s entrepreneurial spirit planted the seeds of ambition in her heart. This admiration evolved into a dream, a vision that would challenge the beauty industry’s status quo.
Helen’s struggles with scalp health and her wealth of experience as a fashion and celebrity hairstylist revealed a significant oversight in the market: a scarcity of authentic scalp-nurturing haircare solutions. This revelation led to Act + Acre, a brand that prioritizes scalp health as the foundation of hair wellness and challenges conventional beauty norms.
Reflecting on the formation of Act + Acre and the impact of her gender on her leadership and company ethos, Helen shared, “Leading Act+Acre has truly been a transformative journey that has taught me invaluable lessons about adaptability, trust in myself, balancing priorities, the importance of continuous learning, and so much more. As a founder, each day I’m met with new challenges, new ideas, and new opportunities, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to go on this journey of self-discovery and personal growth while developing and building the brand. I’m also so lucky to have the support of my incredible team, which is mostly all-female! Our team at Act+Acre is our biggest accomplishment.”
This reflection not only highlights Helen’s journey and the challenges she’s navigated as a woman in leadership but also accentuates the brand’s dedication to fostering innovation, empowerment, and a deep-seated commitment to the principles of clean beauty and scalp health. Act + Acre stands as a testament to what can be achieved when ambition is fueled by a passion for change and a dedication to nurturing a community that shares these values.
Cultivating Growth Fueled by Innovation and Community Engagement

As we bid adieu to the chill of winter and welcome the warmth of spring, it’s not just our wardrobes that require a seasonal overhaul; our curly hair care routines need a refresh, too.
The transition from cold, dry winters to humid, warmer springs can be as challenging for our curls as it is for our spirits, necessitating a change in how we nurture our locks. This guide is dedicated to helping you understand and adapt your hair care regimen to ensure your waves, curls, and coils remain as lively and healthy as the spring bloom.
The Seasonal Pivot: Why It Matters
The transition from winter to spring presents unique challenges and opportunities for curly hair care. Winter’s harsh, dry conditions can strip hair of its natural moisture, leading to brittle strands, increased breakage, and a lackluster appearance. Heavy butters and sealants are necessary to lock in moisture and protect the hair shaft.
However, as we pivot to spring, the increased humidity and warmer temperatures can turn our protective cocoon into a potential for frizz and over-moisturization. Understanding this shift is crucial for maintaining hair health and ensuring our curls remain defined, elastic, and vibrant.
Adapting our hair care regimen to the changing seasons prepares us for the weather ahead and empowers us to manage our curls proactively rather than reactively.

Tangle Teezer with Wide Tooth Comb Technique
The Tangle Teezer and Wide Tooth Comb combination is a dynamic duo in the curly hair community, offering a unique approach to defining and styling curls. This technique, popularized by users on platforms like TikTok, leverages the strengths of both tools to create beautifully defined, clump-free curls. Let’s explore how to use this combination effectively to achieve stunning curl definition.
Step 1: Detangling with the Tangle Teezer
Use the Tangle Teezer on wet hair to gently detangle and form initial curl clumps. The Tangle Teezer’s design allows for a thorough detangling process, ensuring each strand is smooth and ready for styling. This initial step is crucial for preparing the curls for more defined styling, laying the groundwork for a clump-free finish.
Step 2: Clump Formation and Separation
After detangling, you’ll notice that the Tangle Teezer encourages the hair to form natural clumps, grouping curls for enhanced definition. To refine these clumps and ensure they’re not too bulky or uneven, follow up with a wide tooth comb. The wide-tooth comb gently separates the clumps, allowing you to control the size and distribution of your curls. This step is key to achieving a balanced look, with each curl defined yet not overly clumped together. Continue this technique throughout your head, working in sections to ensure thorough coverage and consistent curl definition.
Why This Combo?
The Tangle Teezer and Wide Tooth Comb combo offers a unique advantage in curly hair care, blending the detangling prowess of the Tangle Teezer with the styling precision of a wide-tooth comb. This method not only ensures that curls are free of tangles and knots but also allows for detailed styling that respects the natural pattern of the curls. The result is beautifully defined curls that are voluminous, bouncy, and free of excess clumping, showcasing the natural beauty of curly hair.
4. Behairful Brush
Reel Source: @deecurlthusiast / TikTok
Behairful Brush with Handle Technique
The Behairful Brush technique, especially through its inventive handle usage, presents a fresh method for curl definition. It combines the brush’s exceptional detangling properties with the creative application of its handle to shape curls. Below, we detail how to perfect this technique for achieving gorgeously defined curls.
Step 1: Detangling
Begin with wet hair, ensuring it is thoroughly saturated to facilitate easier detangling. Position the Behairful Brush underneath a section of hair, close to the roots, and gently brush down towards the ends. This initial step helps to detangle the hair smoothly, preparing it for more defined styling. The brush’s design, with its sturdy bristles, allows for effective detangling without causing damage or excessive pull on the hair.
Step 2: Curl Formation
Once the hair is detangled, use the Behairful Brush to aid in curl formation. Place the brush underneath the same section of hair, this time starting a bit lower down from the roots. As you brush down towards the ends, carefully wrap the hair around the handle. Apply gentle tension as you wrap the hair, pulling slightly to ensure the hair is taut around the handle. This step is crucial for defining the curl’s shape and encouraging a springy, elastic curl pattern.
Step 3: Releasing the Curl
After wrapping the hair around the brush handle and pulling with tension to the scalp, hold the position for a few seconds to set the curl. Then, gently release the hair, allowing the curl to unfurl naturally from the handle. This release technique is key to achieving a defined, bouncy curl that retains its shape and volume from roots to ends.
Why the Behairful Brush?
The unique method of using the Behairful Brush, particularly the innovative step of utilizing the handle for curl formation, offers a distinctive advantage for curl definition. It allows for precise control over the shape and tension of each curl, resulting in more uniform and defined curls across the entire head. Moreover, the technique minimizes frizz and maximizes curl definition, making it an ideal choice for those looking to enhance their natural curl pattern with clarity and distinction.

Step 1: Apply Mousse on Wet Hair

Step 2: Detangling with Ease
With the One’s Curl Enhancing Brush in hand, start detangling your hair. Thanks to its strategic design, this brush glides through coily hair effortlessly, minimizing knots and tangles without causing pain or breakage. We all have ways of learning to do cool tips and tricks with our hair, right?? Things that work. Things that don’t work. It’s frustrating, but sometimes you find something that works great for you! Well, I have found a fun trick that I have done since middle school! Yes, that’s right. I said, middle school. Five years ago (wink wink), I had that crunchy hard hair back then for a reason, thanks to Florida humidity, but I have transferred that to a method that I still use today. Curly Cyn’s Scrunch the Crunch out with MORE gel method! I know it sounds crazy and too much, but hear me out.
I style my hair with products, right? Always a leave-in conditioner, cream, and then a gel. Sometimes I will add a mousse but only on occasion. For example, in this picture, I used all Bounce Curl products—their Moisture Balance Leave-In Conditioner, Avocado & Rose Oil Clump and Defined Cream, and Light Creme Gel. Then I diffuse because my hair does no bueno with air drying (You don’t wanna see those results).
Then, once my hair is mostly dry, I grab whatever gel I used for that wash day (this day was the Light Creme Gel) and scrunch that crunch with MORE of the gel. Then I diffuse again. For me, gel is what helps me fight that frizz. It is what my hair craves and looooooves! It gives a bit more definition when doing it twice. If I scrunched it with a cream or leave-in conditioner, it would weigh my hair down a bit. So why not the gel? And it works miracles!
During winter times, I still do this method, but just not as much gel. My hair has high porosity, which means it loves the cold and behaves in the wintertime. Unfortunately, wintertime in Florida is two weeks (but for real), so I use this method almost every single wash day. Also, when I refresh, I mainly use this method. I scrunch my hair with gel and diffuse. When I add water, it gives me so much frizz and not the ringlets I am looking for and love. I aim to have amazing curls with volume and definition, which I feel this method does. So give the Scrunch the Crunch with MORE gel method a shot and see if it works for you!
2. Maeve G.

Refreshing is a critical part of my curly hair routine. I work out 4-7 times a week and only wash twice–I realized fairly early on in my curly journey that I would have to find a refreshing technique that would keep my hair fresh and my scalp happy if I wanted to avoid washing every day.
Post-workout curls are typically stretched out and sweaty. I learned that my scalp needed to be kept clean of sweat to prevent itching and that my curls needed more than just some additional product to spring back. Enter the steam refresh.
Here’s how it works:
- First, I shower with my hair up in a pineapple bun. Once that’s done, I take my hair down and turn the heat up (the water is pointed away from my body to avoid scalding myself). While the steam collects, I use damp hands to scrub my scalp down. This clears out the salt from sweat.
- Once my scalp feels clean (I go over it 2-3 times to make sure I’ve hit every inch–if I skimp on this, I end up itchy!), I flip my head over and start pressing the steam into my hair. I smooth the hair over, literally press it between my hands, and gently scrunch it–and repeat. I do this for about a minute until I start to see my curls spring up. I am careful not to get the hair wet, but some pieces inevitably get more water than others.
- I shut off the water and immediately stepped out of the shower to apply the product. I typically use a cream and one or two gels (my hair loves products and can use a nearly infinite amount). I smooth the product over and scrunch lightly.
- Finally, I diffuse to ensure my scalp is dry and to set the shape of the curls. The result is fresh, sprung-up hair!
- Disclaimer: I have never tried this with a handheld steamer, but I’ve had a few people reach out to say that this routine has worked for them with a steamer.
My steamed hair is always springy and voluminous!
Winter Routine
My normal-to-low porosity hair tends to be on the drier side, so I have to be extra thoughtful during the colder months to keep it hydrated. Here are a few steps I’m taking to keep my hair looking and feeling its best throughout the winter:
- Deep conditioning: I always deep condition once a week, but lately, I’ve been doing it for longer and with a bit of heat. The heat helps open up the cuticle to let in more moisture.
- Co-washing: For the past few months, I’ve been almost exclusively shampooing with gentle shampoos, but with colder temperatures (and sweating less), I’ve been finding my scalp is just as happy and clean with some co-washing, which is less stripping, leaving more moisture in the hair.
- Loading up on moisturizing products: I’m using more leave-in and much more curl cream. These are the first two products I use after washing, and thus, they create a nice moisturized base for me to then layer some gel over for hold.
- Avoiding troublesome ingredients: I do honestly think the glycerin hype/fear is a bit overstated, but I’ve found that my hair frizzes out with too much glycerin at very low dew points (under 30 degrees Fahrenheit). To combat this, I use a glycerin-free gel as my final styling product to avoid glycer-frizz.
3. Lester Moreno

Hi, everyone; my name is Lester Javier Moreno. I got inspired to take care of my hair on April 17th, 2018, after scrolling through IG and seeing other men taking care of their hair and posting their routines. A year and a half later, I now post to inspire and educate men like me to care for their hair. It’s been an amazing journey.
I am not a refreshing type of person. If I must redo my hair, I will do the whole wash day routine. My scalp is very sensitive and tends to be a magnet for build-up. So refreshing for me is screaming for a dirty scalp.
Speaking about my scalp, now that we are in the winter months, I must diligently keep it moisturized. I spend a good amount of time ensuring that my scalp is clean and moisturized by using oils from Righteous Roots Oils. This will be my 2nd winter in my natural hair journey, so I decided to utilize protective styles for my hair. Examples include braids, twists, flat twists, and just wearing my hair in an Afro, which I love to do.

I want to leave y’all with some tips that I believe are the foundation of keeping your hair healthy. I keep my scalp clean and in deep condition weekly, and I protect my hair by using a bonnet, a satin pillowcase for when I sleep, and a microfiber towel during wash days.
You may have already moisturized your skin during winter, but what do you do about your hair and scalp? Just like skin, your scalp and hair need protection from the cold to remain soft, supple, and healthy. Defend your curls from the arctic air, whipping winds, static electricity, and even indoor heat. You want beautiful, healthy curls to show off when spring (finally) comes! Hopefully, these tips from our curl friends were helpful. You can keep your hair hydrated and looking great this winter with a little extra effort.

In the tapestry of beauty and self-expression, the story of natural hair care is rich with resilience, innovation, and a profound sense of community. As we celebrate Black History Month, it’s crucial to spotlight the pioneering Black brands that carved out a space for natural hair in the retail and online worlds.
The early 2000s marked a revolutionary era where brands like Mixed Chicks, Miss Jessie’s, Curls, Camille Rose, Shea Moisture, and Carol’s Daughter challenged the status quo and redefined it. They didn’t just fill shelves; they expanded them, offering products that spoke directly to the needs and aspirations of those with natural curls and coils.
This is more than a nod to the past; it’s a celebration of legacy, a reflection on the transformative journey of natural hair care, and an exploration of its vibrant evolution. From the early landscape of natural hair in the 00s to the social media movements that catapulted these brands into the spotlight and the modern innovation embracing a broader spectrum of textures, this is an homage to the roots that nourish the flourishing tree of natural hair care today.
In the heart of the beauty industry’s evolution, a narrative of empowerment and cultural pride unfurls through the coils and curls of natural hair. This journey, woven intricately with the threads of Black history, has been shaped significantly by pioneering brands that dared to celebrate natural textures at a time when mainstream beauty narratives were markedly different.
We’re chronicling the dynamic voyage of natural hair care from the early 2000s to today, spotlighting the trailblazing brands that led this crusade and the societal shifts that thrust them into the industry limelight.

The Landscape of Natural Hair in the 2000s

As the new millennium unfolded, the beauty industry witnessed a transformative shift, marking the beginning of an era of awakening and empowerment. The early 2000s became a defining period for the natural hair movement, with pioneering brands and their visionary founders: Shea Moisture by Sofi Tucker, Carol’s Daughter by Lisa Price, Miss Jessie’s by sisters Miko and Titi Branch, and Mixed Chicks by Kim Etheredge and Wendi Levy Kaaya. Each played a pivotal role in championing and shaping the course of natural hair care. These brands emerged as beacons of change, speaking directly to the Black woman and celebrating the unique beauty of her natural curls and coils at a time when mainstream narratives failed to do so.
These trailblazers did more than merely introduce products; they ignited a cultural shift, challenging long-held beauty standards and fostering a profound sense of community and self-acceptance. They positioned themselves as brands and advocates for a movement that championed individuality and natural beauty. They resonated deeply with consumers and gradually amplified into a powerful collective voice for change and inclusivity in the beauty industry.
The Essential Rise of Natural Hair Care
In the early 2000s, the haircare market, predominantly catering to straight hair ideals, overlooked the unique needs of naturally kinky, coily, or curly hair textures. This oversight led to a significant void in products that genuinely addressed Black hair’s moisture, maintenance, and styling needs. This limited practical haircare options and reinforced a cultural narrative that marginalized natural Black hair’s beauty and uniqueness.
The emergence of natural haircare brands directly countered this industry’s blind spot. It affirmed Black women’s cultural identity and heritage, encouraging them to celebrate their natural hair. These pioneering brands did more than fill a product gap; they redefined beauty standards, offering products that provided proper care and respect for Black hair. This movement shifted the focus from merely adapting Black hair to fit conventional standards to honoring and elevating its natural beauty.
Products That People Couldn’t Put Down
Every creation from these trailblazing brands narrates a tale of tenacity, beauty, and authenticity. Initial offerings like Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie, Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding, and Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner transcended their status as mere products to become essential elements in countless beauty regimens. Celebrated for their superior quality and homage to a variety of hair textures, these products have become revered mainstays in celebrating natural beauty.
Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie
Shea Moisture has built its brand on the foundation laid by Sofi Tucker, an entrepreneurial mother from Sierra Leone who, in 1912, began selling Shea Butter, African Black Soap, and her own beauty preparations.

Shea Moisture actively honors its heritage by crafting products with its flagship ingredient, shea butter, produced by African women, infusing each item with traditional practices and meticulous attention. The brand’s dedication shines through in its Curl Enhancing Smoothie, cherished by the natural hair community for its hydrating and curl-defining qualities, all thanks to the enriching power of shea butter.
With campaigns like “#BreaktheWalls” launched in April 2016, Shea Moisture promotes a product and a movement towards ethnic inclusion and empowerment, resonating deeply with consumers who seek quality and conscience in their hair care choices.
Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie
Carol’s Daughter has carved out an indelible legacy in the natural hair care renaissance, with its roots stretching back to humble beginnings of selling homespun concoctions at flea markets and from the living room.
Garnering a word-of-mouth reputation that reached celebrities like Jada Pinkett-Smith and Halle Berry, the brand quickly became synonymous with cultural beauty and authenticity. Its diverse product lines, such as the acclaimed Hair Milk and Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie, have not only retained a cult status but have also propelled the brand to the shelves of mainstream retailers and even into the historical archives of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

This growth reflects the brand’s deep commitment to natural ingredients and the celebration of many hair textures, capturing a significant market share alongside giants like Shea Moisture and Miss Jessie’s. As Carol’s Daughter continues to expand its reach with products like the best-selling Monoi collection, it remains a treasured name in the industry, championing universal beauty and care and solidifying its place in the archives of the natural hair movement.
Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding

The founders tapped into early social media’s potential, broadcasting dramatic “Before” and “After” images that showcased the transformative effects of their Curly Pudding on customers’ curls. This grassroots marketing approach helped build a loyal customer base, turning Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding into a beloved staple in hair care routines for its ability to banish frizz and enhance the natural beauty of curls.
Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner
Kim Etheredge and Wendi Levy Kaaya, drawing from their personal experiences as biracial women, set out to redefine the traditional hair care industry with Mixed Chicks. United by their childhood struggles with the unique demands of combination hair, they transitioned from being acquaintances to business partners. The pair faced a market that lacked effective products for their distinct curl patterns, often resorting to mixing a multitude of products to attain the perfect balance of hydration and frizz control.

This shared challenge laid the foundation for their groundbreaking venture. After extensive research and experimentation, they introduced the flagship Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner. This innovation filled a crucial void in the beauty market and provided an effective and affordable solution for those with combination hair types. Their journey from frustration to formulation marked the inception of Mixed Chicks, a brand that stands as a testament to their vision of inclusivity and quality in hair care.
How Social Media Fueled the Natural Hair Movement

Social media’s ascendancy was a game-changer for the natural hair care market, not only elevating legacy brands like Carol’s Daughter, Shea Moisture, and Miss Jessie’s but also paving the way for new entrants like Mielle Organics, Camille Rose, and Pattern Beauty. The late 2000s and early 2010s saw platforms like MySpace, Instagram, and YouTube transform into powerful forums for fostering dialogue and education around natural hair care. This digital revolution facilitated a more inclusive and broad-ranging conversation about curly hair, extending beyond traditional marketing channels.

As social media platforms grew, influencers and everyday users began showcasing their experiences with established and emerging hair care brands. This shift in the digital landscape leveled the playing field in the beauty industry, allowing newer brands to gain visibility alongside established ones. With their massive followings, influencers like Naptural85 (Whitney White), Courtney Danielle (CurlsandCouture), and Jessica Pettway played a pivotal role in this shift. They provided genuine reviews and tutorials, using products from legacy and new brands, thereby introducing them to a broader audience.

This era of digital advocacy and shared experiences created a more transparent and accessible market where smaller, newer brands could compete on a more level playing field with established companies. It fostered a sense of community and trust, as consumers could see actual results on real people, bridging the gap between brands and their customers. The result was a natural hair care market that was more diverse, vibrant, and responsive to the needs of its consumers, allowing for a greater variety of products and solutions tailored to a wide range of hair textures and needs.
The Legacy Paves the Way for Diversity in Haircare

Pioneers like Shea Moisture, Carol’s Daughter, Miss Jessie’s, and Mixed Chicks laid the groundwork, recognizing the unique beauty in every hair type and leading the charge toward inclusivity. Their commitment to innovation and personalization reshaped the beauty industry, offering products crafted to nurture every curl pattern, from loose waves to tight coils.
These trailblazers diversified product lines and set a precedent for the industry, influencing a new generation of brands and encouraging even mainstream beauty giants to incorporate curly and coily hair products into their offerings. The ripple effect of their pioneering efforts is evident as more brands now acknowledge and celebrate the full spectrum of hair textures, ensuring that products are varied and tailored to meet specific needs. This ongoing evolution in hair care is a testament to the enduring influence of legacy brands as they continue to inspire, shape market trends, and champion the message that every hair texture deserves recognition and specialized care.

As the air fills with the sweet scent of romance and the world bathes in the soft, rosy hues of Valentine’s Day, it’s the perfect time to let your hair down—or rather, style it up—in a way that encapsulates the essence of love and allure.
Updos are not just hairstyles; they are crafted stories sitting pretty atop your head, each twist and turn to narrate a saga of elegance and sophistication. Ideal for Valentine’s Day, these styles elevate your look and serve as a canvas for playful creativity and glamour.
Whether your curls cascade like a waterfall or your waves whisper secrets of the sea, an updo elevates your look, making it a style and a statement. So, let’s explore the world of updos, where every hair type is a pledge of beauty and grace, perfect for an unforgettable date night.
Why Updos are Great Hairstyles for Valentine’s Day
Updos are synonymous with sophistication and elegance, making them an impeccable choice for Valentine’s Day. They exude a sense of polished grace, perfectly complementing the romantic and celebratory ambiance of the occasion. Here’s why updos are the go-to hairstyle for a memorable Valentine’s night:
1. Versatility in Style: Whether you prefer a classic bun, a chic French twist, or a more intricate braided design, updos offer a variety of styles to match your taste and the formality of your date night evening plans.
2. Highlighting Facial Features: By sweeping the hair off the neck and away from the face, updos draw attention to the facial features, allowing your natural beauty and any special makeup touches to take center stage.
3. Long-lasting Elegance: Updos, designed to maintain their shape and volume throughout the night, ensure that the hairstyle remains as stunning at the end of the evening as it was at the beginning, unlike loose styles, which might lose their form.
4. Flaunting Accessories and Outfits: Updos provide the perfect opportunity to showcase statement earrings, necklaces, or the neckline of a gorgeous dress, making your Valentine’s Day outfit even more striking.
Styling Products for the Perfect Updo
Pro-tip: For an effortlessly stylish updo, wash your hair a day or two before your date night. Hair that hasn’t been freshly washed often holds styles better, as natural oils can provide additional grip and texture. This approach is efficient for those whose hair doesn’t become overly oily quickly. Waiting a day or two post-wash can make the styling process smoother and the final look more polished and long-lasting.
To craft the perfect updo, having the right styling products is key. Here are a few essentials:
1. Stronghold Gel or Mousse
To secure the integrity of your updo and guarantee lasting hold throughout the evening, opt for high-performance products. The Giovanni L.A. Hold Styling Gel and Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper Gel are excellent choices for a gel that offers a stronghold without causing stiffness. For mousse lovers, the TRESemme Extra Firm Control Tres Mousse Extra Hold is an exceptional choice for straight-to-wavy hair textures, providing a reliable grip without weighing the hair down. Alternatively, for those with curlier locks, The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam for curlier textures stands out as an ideal option to keep every hair ideally in place. Both are standout options for achieving an impeccably styled look that lasts.
2. Styling Cream
Particularly advantageous for individuals with curly or wavy hair, a superior styling cream such as Rizos Curls Curl Defining Cream can help define and sculpt your curls or waves. This ensures they integrate seamlessly into your updo, contributing to a harmonious and refined style. For a versatile option that caters to all hair types, Morracanoil Styling Cream is an excellent choice, providing flexible hold and definition to any hairstyle.
3. Shine Serum or Oil
A small amount can significantly enhance your updo with a sumptuous, glossy sheen, giving your hair a lively and healthy appearance. The Ouai Multi-Purpose Hair Oil is a fantastic choice for all hair types. At the same time, Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils Flaxseed Recipes Soft All Over Multi-Purpose Oil suits those with curlier textures.
4. Heat Protectant
If you’re using hot tools to smooth or curl your hair before pinning it up, a heat protectant is essential to prevent damage and keep your hair looking healthy and shiny. The KERASTASE Resistance Ciment Thermique Hair Serum and Blow Dry Primer is an excellent choice. This versatile product is suitable for all hair types and offers adequate protection against the heat.
5. Flexible-hold Hairspray
Applying a final spray of hairspray ensures that your hairstyle is securely set while offering a flexible, natural hold. This allows your hair to maintain its movement and texture without becoming rigid or tacky to the touch. The Kenra Root Lifting Spray 13 is highly recommended for straight hair, as it provides lift and lasting hold. For those with wavy and curly hair, consider the Pantene Pro-V Level 2 Lightweight Finish Alcohol-Free Hairspray, a versatile choice suitable for all hair types, ensuring a light, flawless finish.
6. Edge Control
Perfect for taming flyaways and laying down edges, an edge control gel, like the MIZANI Styling Edge Taming Gel, is a must-have for achieving a sleek, polished look. It’s beneficial for maintaining your Valentine’s Day updo’s clean lines and intricate details.

Essential Maintenance Tips for Heart Braids
Caring for heart braids requires patience and dedication, as the installation time for these intricately designed braids can range from two to three hours, sometimes longer depending on the number and complexity of the hearts woven into your style. Preparation is key, so plan accordingly when scheduling your appointment.
The lifespan of heart braids can extend up to two to three weeks, largely influenced by your hair care regimen. Proper maintenance is crucial to prolong the vibrancy and neatness of your braids.
Here are essential tips for maintaining your heart braids:
1. Mousse for Braid Maintenance: A good mousse is invaluable to keep your braids smooth and free from flyaways. Opt for a quick-dissolving foaming mousse like Lotta Body Wrap Me Foaming Mousse. A light application will help set your braids, reduce frizz, and ensure a neat appearance.
2. Edge Control for a Polished Look: Maintain the sleekness of your braids and keep those edges crisp. An essential tool in your hair care arsenal should be a top-tier edge control product such as the African Pride Black Castor Miracle Extra Hold Braid, Loc, & Twist Gel. Apply it sparingly for best results—a small amount effectively maintains those neat edges, ensuring they’re smoothly laid without any unwanted residue.
3. Silk or Satin for Overnight Care: Safeguard your braids against the nightly challenges of restless sleep by wrapping them in a satin/silk scarf or bonnet. Adhering to this nightly routine is crucial in warding off frizz while preserving the moisture and luster of your braids. Alternatively, opting for a silk or satin pillowcase can also be beneficial. It provides double protection by offering a smooth, frictionless surface that ensures your braids remain undisturbed, retaining their neat, fresh appearance night after night.
4. Moisturize and Nourish Your Scalp: While your braids are in, don’t neglect the health of your scalp. Regularly apply a lightweight, nourishing oil or serum to lubricate your scalp and promote healthy hair growth. Products like jojoba oil or tea tree oil not only lubricate but also help prevent itching and flaking, ensuring your comfort and the longevity of your braids.

In this guide, we’re not just skimming the surface of hair care products; we’re zeroing in on the specific ingredients that directly address these issues. It’s about understanding each ingredient’s ‘why’ and ‘how’ and its impact on textured hair.
Sifting through hair care ingredients can sometimes feel overwhelming with the scientific terms and industry jargon. But we’re here to simplify things. We’ll highlight the essential ingredients that are particularly effective in tackling problems unique to wavy, curly, and coily hair types.
Get ready to discover a wealth of ingredients that provide your strands with deep nourishment, proteins that fortify and rebuild, etc. Each ingredient discussed will be linked to a specific hair concern, providing you with targeted solutions that cater to the needs of your textured hair.
Common Hair Care Challenges and Solutions for Textured Hair
Issue #1: Dryness
Dryness in hair is a lack of moisture. It can be caused by over-styling, rough handling, or harsh chemical treatments, which can reduce the protein content in hair fibers. This results in hair becoming porous, dry, and brittle. To maintain healthy, voluminous hair, ensuring adequate moisture levels is essential.1,2
To manage hair dryness effectively, there are two main strategies:
1. Preserve the Existing Moisture: This involves keeping the hair’s current water content and controlling its evaporation.1
2. Add Moisture: This strategy aims to reintroduce water molecules into dry hair fibers.2
Solution – Key Ingredients for Dry Hair:
- Glycerin: A humectant that adds moisture to dry hair. It can be slightly sticky in high doses.
- Propylene Glycol: Helps add moisture without a sticky residue.
- Propanediol: A natural biodegradable, new-generation humectant that enhances the water content in hair and is highly preferred for all hair types.
- Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid (PCA) Salts (Sodium or Zinc PCA): A component of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) that add water molecules to dry hair, having a higher water-binding capacity compared to traditional humectants. Strongly recommended for extremely dry and damaged hair.
- Betaine: Derived from beetroot, this natural moisturizing agent has excellent water-binding properties, perfect for dry, damaged, and highly porous hair.
- Aloe Vera: Contains sugar-based natural polymers known as polysaccharides, adds water molecules and provides a superior natural texture. It is a natural, sustainable ingredient that benefits hair fibers and the scalp.
Products Featuring These Key Ingredients:
Mielle Organics Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner
(contains Sodium PCA)
AG Hair Curl Revie Sulfate-Free Hydrating Shampoo
(contains glycerin, sodium PCA)
Issue #2: Frizz
Frizz is a common issue for damaged and highly porous hair fibers, leading to hair that’s difficult to manage and style.4 Frizzy hair often appears “messy” and lacks style and curl definition. Certain vital ingredients are particularly effective in addressing this.
Solution-Key Anti-Frizz Ingredients and Their Benefits:
- Argan Oil: This oil is a quick fix for frizz, offering softness and protects against UV damage.
- Shea Butter: A natural emollient that provides excellent spreadability, conditioning and shine, making it ideal for damaged, frizzy hair.
- Macadamia Nut Oil: Known for its light texture, this oil has superior hair-softening benefits that help reduce frizz and static.
- Sunflower Oil: A poly-unsaturated oil that guards against UV damage, this ingredient helps reduce fiber friction, protecting the hair shaft.
- Sesame Seed Oil: Rich in natural antioxidants that aid in fiber protection and color retention and improve hair manageability.
- Jojoba Oil: Effective against frizz and breakage, Jojoba Oil is also non-comedogenic, making it suitable for all hair types.3
- Silicone Oils (Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone, Phenyltrimethicone): These synthetic oils are highly effective against frizz due to their hydrophobic properties. They offer a quick solution for smoother hair.
Products Featuring These Key Ingredients:
Cantu Argan Oil Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream
(contains argan oil, shea butter, dimethicone)

Issue #3: Knots and Tangles
Knots and tangles are prevalent for individuals with curly hair, creating challenges in styling and managing their curls. These knots can lead to a loss of body, and curls often fail to maintain a defined shape.
A formulation containing a blend of detangling and fiber-softening agents is essential to untangle these knots effectively. Cationic surfactants and polymers are particularly effective as they align the cuticles, detangle the hair shaft, and help manage static charge density.
Solution – Key Ingredients for Knots and Tangles:
- Cetrimonium Chloride, Behentrimonium Chlorides: These are suitable for natural to lightly damaged hair fibers, helping to smooth and detangle.
- Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine / Behenamidopropyl Dimethylamine: These ingredients are ideal for extremely damaged, porous, and brittle hair, offering intensive softening and detangling benefits.
- Polyquaternium-10: This is a strong cationic agent with high substantivity, making it perfect for excessively damaged and chemically treated hair. It’s commonly found in shampoos and deep conditioning masks.
- Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride (GHPTC): A cationic guar polymer that effectively coats and aligns hair fibers, aiding in cuticle alignment and enhancing the deposition of active ingredients. It’s frequently used in conditioning shampoos, conditioners, and masks.

EDEN BodyWorks Coconut Shea All Natural Hair Masque
(contains cetrimonium chloride, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride)

Issue #4: Hair Breakage and Split Ends
Hair breakage and split ends are often the result of protein loss in the hair fibers. This can occur due to excessive styling, harsh chemical treatments, and repeated hair swelling, which leads to the weakening of the hair over time.5,6 As a result, hair loses its natural strength and becomes prone to breaking during routine activities like combing or styling.
Solution: Best Ingredients for Restoring Hair Strength
- Panthenol (Vitamin B5 Derivative): It is a Vitamin B5 derivative. It is also known for its dual benefits of hydrating the hair fiber and strengthening it. It helps to restore the natural resilience of the hair, reducing the likelihood of breakage and split ends.
- Proteins – Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein: Proteins undergo hydrolysis, breaking them down into smaller molecules, allowing for easier absorption by the hair.7 Depending on their molecular size and weight, they can bind to the surface or penetrate deep into the hair cortex. Hydrolyzed wheat protein, with its smaller fragments and amino acids, is particularly effective in compensating for lost mechanical strength. It works by replenishing the hair’s protein content, restoring its mechanical strength, and making it more resilient to damage.8
Products Featuring These Key Ingredients:
Kerastase Nutritive Masquintense Hair Mask
(contains hydrolyzed wheat protein)
Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-in Conditioner
(contains panthenol, hydrolyzed wheat protein)

Remember when using hot oil treatments were considered the “deep conditioner” miracle for dry or damaged hair? Products like V05 were all the rave. The timeless popularity of the hot oil treatments everyone enjoys does not come without reason. Hot oil treatment is a hair and scalp treatment, using natural oils to treat damaged hair, protecting and strengthening it with vitamins and nutrients.

If you put your hair through a lot of stress, such as teasing, coloring, or subjecting your hair to various degrees of temperature, then a hot oil treatment may be for you. They provide many more benefits, which we will cover later in the article. Hot oil treatments are very similar to pre-poo oil treatments; however, they differ in the stage of the washing cycle in which they are applied.
Unlike pre-poo treatments, hot oil treatments tend to follow the shampoo stage rather than before it. However, many people are finding utility in applying hot oil treatment at the pre-shampoo stage as well. Hot oil treatments tend to include oils exclusively, whereas pre-shampoo treatments are varied.
Benefits
1. It Helps Moisturize Your Hair
If your hair is dry or brittle, try the hot oil treatment – in addition to heat – to bring your hair back to life. Hot oil treatments are commonly used during the colder months, but you can benefit from a hot oil treatment all year round. Hot oil treatments act as a spa for your hair, helping to strengthen your hair and prevent dry, brittle hair, split ends, and retain moisture.

Hot oil treatments soothe hair into smoothness by penetrating the hair shaft with intense hydrating moisture, which then protects the hair and makes it softer and more manageable. Treat your hair with hot oils once a week (or as needed) to get the lost oil back into the hair follicles and to rejuvenate the strength. Hot oil treatments will help deposit oil back into your hair and prevent dryness that can contribute to breakage. It will also help dry hair regain suppleness, elasticity, flexibility, and softness.
2. Helps with Frizz and Split Ends
Frizzy hair can become a problem at any time of the year. A hot oil treatment moisturizes your hair from within and helps to prevent frizz and split ends.
3. Shields Your Hair From Sun Damage
The hot oil treatment for hair can create a protective shield that blocks the damage to your hair that excessive sun exposure can cause, such as discoloration and weakness. On days when you’ll be out in the sun for long periods, try coconut oil or Righteous Roots Oils (which has sun-protecting properties) to help shield your hair from the sun’s rays- work it into your curls and style as you usually would.
4. Add/Restore Shine
One of the perks of using hot oils to treat your hair is that they create shine.
5. Blood Circulation
Blood is what supplies nutrients to various parts of the body, including your scalp. These nutrients are responsible for giving your hair follicles the life and strength they need. The hot oil treatment for hair stimulates blood flow to and from the scalp so that the required nutrients are supplied and, in turn, aids in healthy hair growth.
6. Fight The Flakes (Dandruff in winter)
Your scalp is drier and itchier than ever during the winter months because of the lack of moisture in the air, which can lead to issues like dandruff and irritated scalp. What most people don’t realize is that the dandruff problem can be manageable with the right care.
Applying a hot oil treatment is a simple method to curb the dandruff problem. Apply it thoroughly to the entire scalp and then massage it for a few minutes. Two great blends of oil for dandruff are Alikay Naturals Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil and As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Olive & Tea Tree Oil LeaveIn Conditioner.
7. Use it for Deep Conditioning.
Your hair needs all the moisture it can get during winter, making conditioning a vital part of your hair care routine. Using hair oils and a deep conditioner at least once a week can help maintain the health of your hair. Concentrate on the ends, as they are your hair’s oldest and most fragile parts.
How to apply:
- Scoop a small amount of oil into a small bowl. Place the small bowl in the bottom of another larger bowl.
- Fill the larger bowl with hot water, allowing the smaller one to be partially submerged. However, make sure it isn’t floating or taking on water.
- Once the oil has reached the right temperature and is completely melted, test the temperature of the oil on top of the back of your hand before applying it to your scalp/hair. Massage and work the oil in thoroughly.
- Wrap your hair in a small towel or shower cap and leave it for 30 minutes or longer.
- Wash and shampoo your hair to remove the oil.
