18 Straight-Back Braided Styles For Guys

Straight-back braided styles, also known as cornrows, have long been a popular choice for men and young boys during the summer months. These types of braids, which run straight back from the front hairline to the nape of the neck, offer a sleek and practical look that keeps hair neatly styled and off the face.

As temperatures rise, straight-back braids provide a fresh, low-maintenance hairstyle that can withstand sweat and humidity. They’re also versatile and allow for various designs — from simple and clean to intricate patterns — catering to individual preferences.

Straight-back braids often last several weeks, making them ideal protective hairstyles for summer activities like swimming or outdoor excursions.

To help you switch it up, here are 18 straight-back styles (appropriate for all ages) to try this season!

The CROWN Act Is Back to the Federal Level: Here’s What to Know!

The end to hair discrimination, as we know it, may arrive sooner than expected. Last month, the bill for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair” also known as The CROWN Act was reintroduced on a federal level. This is the latest attempt to ensure protection against discrimination on race-based hairstyles such as braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools.

The Current Landscape of Hair Discrimination

Texas high school student Darryl George was suspended late last year for wearing locs to school. The school officials said his locs fell below his eyebrows and ear lobes, violating the school district’s dress code, reports AP News

Sixty-six percent of Black children in majority-white schools have faced race-based hair discrimination, according to The CROWN Act’s 2021 study.

Although Texas is one of 24 states that have enacted a version of the CROWN Act, the school was ruled not to violate the state law. The CROWN Act prohibits race-based discrimination against people based on their hairstyle, not their hair length.

Despite some positive steps in moving the act to a federal level, racial bias related to hairstyles continues to persist as a widespread issue. Natural hairstyles are often viewed through a biased lens and deemed unacceptable or unprofessional. This form of discrimination perpetuates racial inequities and creates hostile, demoralizing conditions that undermine personal autonomy and dignity. Overcoming these entrenched prejudices requires a concerted effort to raise awareness, implement stronger anti-discrimination policies, and foster a more inclusive culture that celebrates diversity rather than penalizes it.

Additionally, hair discrimination manifests itself through discriminatory hiring practices as well as demeaning interactions that frequently occur in professional environments. In these situations, the brunt of injustice and discrimination is often borne by Black women, who face diminished employment prospects plus barriers to career growth and upward mobility.

2023 CROWN Workplace Research Study

In 2023 the CROWN Act reported, 66 percent of Black women changed their hair for a job interview. Among them, 41 percent changed their hair from curly to straight. This is an improvement from a 2019 study that showed that 80 percent of Black women were more likely to change their natural hair to meet social norms or expectations at work.

While securing a vote on the bill from the Republican leadership in Congress to pass federal CROWN Act legislation will undoubtedly be a significant challenge, there is reason for optimism. For the first time, we have achieved bipartisan backing in the Senate for this legislation. This crucial support from both parties represents an encouraging step forward and demonstrates the growing consensus around the need to address this issue.

To shed light on the pervasive issue of hair bias and discrimination against Black women in professional settings, Dove and LinkedIn have jointly commissioned a comprehensive research study titled “The 2023 CROWN Workplace Research Study.” This study meticulously examines such discriminatory practices’ systemic social and economic ramifications, underscoring the pressing need for transformative change.

Recognizing the urgency of this matter, Dove and LinkedIn have also developed a series of free LinkedIn Learning Courses for the public. These courses are designed to foster a more equitable and inclusive work environment for all users of the business—and employment-focused platform.

They aimed to educate one million hiring managers and workplace professionals by the end of 2023. They aimed to equip professionals with the knowledge and tools to combat hair discrimination and promote a culture of acceptance and respect.

Until all 50 states recognize the act, continue to wear your crown with dignity, style, and grace.

Afsennah Debunks The Misconceptions Behind Scalp Care and The Sun

Advanced trichologist Afsennah Kalanawi has grappled with scalp eczema and hair loss for years. Unable to find lasting relief despite consulting numerous experts, Kalanawi took matters into her own hands. This led her down an unexpected path that transformed her relationship with her hair and empowered her to help others navigate their hair struggles.

Inspired by her mother’s lifelong passion for herbalism, Kalanawi tapped into the vast wisdom of plants, herbs, and oils for their healing properties. Drawing from her self-taught expertise and multiple skin and hair courses, she formulated haircare products using meticulously chosen natural ingredients tailored to each person’s unique needs. Her brand, “Afsennah,” launched in 2021 and reflects her commitment to empowering others through personalized, holistic hair care solutions.

As sunny weather quickly approached, NaturallyCurly decided to catch up with the 30-year-old to discuss scalp and hair care.

What common misconceptions about scalp care would you like to debunk?

Some people don’t realize its importance or think there’s a one-size-fits-all solution. [For example] washing your hair less isn’t always better for your scalp health; sometimes it’s making things worse! To get healthy hair, you must start with a healthy scalp first.

How do the sun and UV rays affect our hair?

The sun can really damage hair, making it dry and brittle and even affecting its color. UV rays can also weaken hair’s structure, making it less elastic and strong.

What products should we use to protect our hair, especially during hotter weather?

When it’s hot outside, use products that protect your hair from UV rays, keep it hydrated, and shield it from heat. Look for lightweight leave-in conditioners and sprays with UV protection, and wear a hat or scarf when you’re out in the sun.

What additional steps/treatments would you suggest for those with a curlier texture?

If you have curly hair, keeping it moisturized is key. Look for deep and leave-in products that help keep your curls hydrated and frizz-free. Another tip is to top it off with a good hair oil to seal in the moisture of the leave-in conditioner.

What are the best hair products for year-round protection?

To keep your hair protected all year round, use products with SPF and heat protectants before styling with hot tools, and give your hair regular deep conditioning treatments.

How do protective styles like braids and hair extensions impact our hair/scalp?

Braids are often considered good protective hairstyles because they can help distribute tension evenly across the scalp, reducing stress on individual hair strands. Additionally, braids can shield the hair from environmental damage and manipulation, promoting hair health and growth. On the other hand, hair extensions can cause tension on the hair and scalp, especially if installed too tightly or worn for extended periods.

This tension can lead to traction alopecia, where hair is pulled out from the roots, resulting in hair loss. If you opt for hair extensions, it’s crucial to have them installed by a professional who understands how to minimize tension and protect the hair and scalp. Additionally, it’s essential not to wear extensions for too long, as prolonged use can exacerbate tension and increase the risk of hair loss.

However, if possible, I would still avoid hair extensions altogether. While they can be convenient for achieving certain hairstyles, the potential risks to hair and scalp health may outweigh the benefits in the long run.

What products and methods would you recommend using to avoid damage?

Avoiding damage is all about being gentle with your hair. Use wide-tooth combs to detangle, use a good leave-in conditioner and leave-in hair oil daily, sleep on silk, dry your hair with microfiber towels, and avoid heat as much as possible.

What are the best low-tension practices and hairstyles?

If you want to keep your hair healthy without causing too much tension, try hairstyles like loose braids, twists, or buns. Remember to use silk accessories and avoid tight elastics to minimize damage. Personally, I love loose braids!

How Netflix’s Bridgerton Reimagines Period Hairstyles

The wonderful world of Bridegerton returns to our screens (and hearts) on May 16, 2024. The Regency-era program became a global phenomenon in 2020, captivating audiences with its steamy romance scenes and impeccable fashion. But beyond the show’s lavish costumes and rich storylines, Bridgerton has also made an irresistible impact on beauty—particularly when it comes to hairstyles.

Bridgerton hairstyles have become a true reflection of the show’s commitment to representation while rewriting the beauty standards of period pieces. Gone are the days when we sat through poorly fixed wigs and dreadful styling of naturally curly hair. Bridgeton reimagines and embraces a wide range of hair textures, from tight curls to flowing waves.

In an article reported by the LA Times, Nic Collins (the head makeup and hair designer for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) said, “If it’s not their natural hair, all characters are wearing wigs because we wanted to be cautious and not damage the lead’s natural hair.” Collins also reveals that most wigs on set were made of up to eight tightly glued pieces. The production team crafted over a thousand unique styles tailored to the character’s place in the season’s narrative.

This type of representation challenges the traditional beauty standards that have long dominated the film and television industry. It paves the way for a more inclusive and diverse portrayal of natural beauty.

Here are the top stand-out beauty moments from the hit television series.

1. Young Agatha

Source: Instagram/bridgertonnetflix

Young Agatha’s voluminous Georgian-era hairstyle in Queen Charlotte contrasted with the sleeker Regency looks. Her intricate coiffure showcased the meticulous attention to detail, making it a standout feature that captured the essence of the period.

2. The Featherington Sisters

The Featherington sisters’ curly updos in Bridgerton season one were a hit despite their characters not being fan favorites. Their fiery red hair was beautifully accentuated by stunning floral accessories, making this a memorable look.

3. Queen Charlotte

Queen Charlotte showcases a stunning two-toned wig with intricate crystal embellishments, creating a mesmerizing look that blends the elegance of Swan Lake with the opulence of the Regency era. As we eagerly await the third season, Queen Charlotte teases us with innovative and visually striking hairstyles.

4. Penelope Featherington

Penelope Featherington’s new look for Bridgerton’s third season channels 1950s Hollywood glamor, with dreamy red waves and delicate baby hairs evoking the style of iconic movie stars like Marilyn Monroe but with a good ol’ twist. This stunning transformation promises to make Penelope an unforgettable diamond in the upcoming season.

5. Queen Charlotte

Queen Charlotte stunned with a dark and regal, loc’d updo. Staggered bejeweled accessories and floral loc details elevated the elegant hairstyle. It was another jaw-dropping, royal moment that showcased the Queen’s impeccable beauty and style.

6. Kate Sharma

Kate Sharma’s braided bun became a signature look in Bridgerton’s second season. This hairstyle framed her expressive face, allowing her nuanced performances to shine. This stylish choice complemented the character’s journey, highlighting her poise and confidence as she navigated the season.

7. Young Charlotte

When young Charlotte wasn’t wearing her hair in an elegant pineapple, she proudly strutted around her kingdom with her beautiful, voluminous afro. Adorned in her shiny new crown, the young queen exuded confidence and regal poise in the series prequel.

8. Young Agatha

Another stand-out look from the series goes to young Agatha. Agatha debuted a stunning twist-filled updo, which looked polished yet effortless. The intricate styling created an exquisite hair moment, showcasing Agatha’s youthful elegance and style.

In short, Bridgerton has undoubtedly left its mark on popular culture with its modern take on period hairstyles. From cascading waves and coils to intricate protective styles, the show’s fascinating hair choices have become a source of inspiration. The Evolution of Natural Hair At Beauty Pageants

In the world of pageantry, structured and manageable hair is the name of the game. At least that’s what Lisa Drouillard, also known as Miss Haiti, says. Drouillard, who was crowned the respective title in 2015 and competed in Miss Universe the same year, explains that hairstyles that incorporate processed hair, such as sew-ins, clip-ins, or u-part wigs, are commonly seen in pageantry. However, as of late, there’s been a change

“There has been a shift towards embracing natural hair textures, with numerous beauty queens proudly showcasing their curls, coils, and kinks,” she tells NaturallyCurly. “From short, chic cuts to majestic afros and stunning locs, contestants are redefining beauty standards and setting new trends, proving that diversity and individuality are some key components of pageant glamor.”

Yet, there’s still room for growth within the pageant community, as the 2016 Miss USA winner Deshauna Barber pens the disturbing reality of competing as a dark skin naturalista.

“For me to walk out in my natural hair and to crown someone with natural hair broke down walls,” she wrote for Refinery29, adding, “It opened up a world for the girls who feel they need to straighten their curls and add long extensions.”

Looking towards the future, Drouillard hopes for representation in every aspect of the pageant industry.

“By breaking barriers and challenging traditional norms with our unique personalities, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse landscape in pageantry, where every woman sees herself reflected on stage and behind the scenes.”

Until then, we reflect on the naturalista’s from the past to the present who’ve taken center stage.

Navigating The Sew-In Era As A 4C Natural

I love experimenting with my hair as much as the next person, but a slight shiver ran through my spine when I saw that traditional sew-ins were coming back in style. A traditional sew-in weave is a popular technique where extensions are attached to a braided base. A portion of hair is left out in front to cover hair tracks and provide a more seamless appearance.

If you’re like me and have 4C hair, achieving the trendy soft, curled-heavy layered sew-in look isn’t as easy to achieve as it seems. When chemical relaxers were commonly used, this would be an easy effort since our chemically straightened tresses could easily blend into the extensions used. However, attempting this today (as a full-blown natural) will have us all looking like a frizzy mess. Nonetheless, there are ways to avoid this without completely frying your hair off

It’s All In The Hair

Extensions are not one texture fits all, so it’s best to experiment and see which extensions mimic your natural hair best. Being that I have a coarser hair texture, I’ve personally loved yaki straight hair because it provides the most seamless blend, even on the most humid days. Plus, I don’t have to run a flat iron through my leave-out constantly.

Another option is to purchase deep wave extensions and blow them out to achieve your desired style. Consider this option a two-for-one, especially on the days when you simply want to rock some curls! UK-based brand, Ruka Hair provides texture-matching extensions so that every naturalista can find hair that works for them. However, if you’re balling on a budget Amazon provides affordable alternatives, too.

Stretch and Protect

My go-to products while wearing a sew-in consist of heat-protective sprays and oils that can withstand my favorite hot tools. On clean and damp hair, I go in with the COLOR WOW Extra Strength Dream Coat, an anti-humidity hair treatment spray that combats frizz and protects hair from heat. It also lasts up to three to four shampoos. Afterward, I follow up with Revlon’s One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler, which makes stretching out my natural kinks a breeze.

Most of the time, I’d stop here and finish up with the Olaplexth No.7 Bonding Oil, which adds shine while protecting, strengthening, and repairing my hair. But on days I want a sleeker look, I’ll follow up with a straightening tool like the BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Ultra-Thin Hair Straightener (on the lowest heat setting).

Keeping It Cute

The good part about using yaki hair extensions is that the upkeep is much easier. I use less heat and it looks more seamless because it matches my natural hair texture. If you’re a super low-maintenance natural (like me) and don’t want to deal with the fuss of washing around your sew-in wefts, try out the Divo Express Sew-In method.

https://www.tiktok.com/@cliptbyla/video/7278855471266680094?_r=1&_t=8keRsfcROgt

This approach allows you to attach clip-in extensions to your cornrows instead of weaving on your hair wefts. This way, you can clip off your extensions, wash your natural hair like normal, and reapply your clip-in when ready.

In short, having 4C curls doesn’t mean you have to limit the way you wear your hair. It simply means you have to show your kinky mane more love and attention. Personally, that sounds like a win to me! With the advancement of hair technology, we can rejoice knowing that we naturals can partake in the latest hair trends without compromising the health of our hair and the integrity of our curls. Whether you’re getting a voluminous layered look or long bone-straight hair, just make sure you’re getting a texture that works for you!

The Top Natural Hair Moments At The 2024 Oscars

In 1954, Dorothy Dandridge became the first Black woman nominated for the Best Actress category at the 27th Academy Awards. Dandridge debuted a classic curled coif at the ceremony, marking her as one of the few natural-haired beauties to appear at the award show. Before Dandridge’s debut came other iconic looks from actress Ethel Waters and Hattie McDaniel, who wore a curled coif to her segregated ceremony in 1939.

Although wearing natural hair at elegant functions can still be seen as an anomaly today, this year’s Oscars brought some of the best hair scene-stealing moments to the carpet. From loc’d looks to pressed and curly hairdos, here are the standout natural hair moments from the 96th Academy Award show.

Regina King

However, the American Fiction star didn’t leave the bright colors at home. Instead, she opted to wear it on her custom Christian Siriano ombré tulle dress.

Someone who isn’t afraid to wear her natural hair on the carpet is academy-award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o. The actress paid homage to her 2014 Oscar look by wearing a blue gown from Giorgio Armani, rocking it with a glitter-dusted mini afro.

Product Refresh 101: How to Determine Which Products To Toss at The Top of The Year

It’s always hard to part from a beloved hair product, especially ones that have been with you from the very start of your natural hair journey. As with most love stories, particularly the ones that stunt your (hair) growth, things stop working out and eventually have to come to an end. However, this ending doesn’t have to be a tragic one.

Tossing out old hair products can benefit you and your curls in the long run. Most expired hair products can become less effective and sometimes even contaminated. On the bright side, there’s a list of high-quality products on the market that work twice as good as your old favorite and can even help spruce up your hair routine.

With that being said, here’s everything you need to know about the essential products that may or may not be affecting the health and integrity of your waves, kinks, and coils.

Shampoo & Conditioner

A good clarifying shampoo and a nourishing conditioner are crucial for healthy curls and an even healthier scalp. Like most personal care products, shampoo and conditioner have a period after opening (PAO) symbol that tells you how long your product is good for once opened. This number can range anywhere from six to 24 months.

However, if you start noticing a weird smell and an odd texture, it’s most likely time to replace your products with something new. If you have goals of maintaining healthy natural hair, perhaps implementing a fresh set of products into your regime this new year can help you hit them.

Curl Cream/Butters/Custards

No routine is complete without a creamy curl cream, butter and/or custard. This is why it’s a must for your curl-defining product to still be in good use. Can you imagine spending the whole day doing the perfect two-strand twist or braid out, only for the final product to come out looking dry and flaky? Talk about a nightmare.

Gel

This product cannot slick its way out of expiring, no matter how much we love it. Unopened hair gel can last up to three years, but expiration dates vary depending on when it has been opened. Weird smell, color change, and product effectiveness are all key factors that your hair gel needs to be tossed. It can be difficult keeping up with the expiration date especially if you’re using a homemade gel, so always create small batches and get rid of it after a week.

Did you really think your edge control was safe from expiring? Think again! Hair pomades like Edge Control are made from petroleum jelly, mineral oil, and paraffin wax. They will begin to lose their hold and effectiveness over time unless you opt for an edge control that is water or oil-based, alcohol-free, or made using beeswax. Nonetheless, most pomades can last for more than a year if stored in a cool and dry area. Protect your edges and swap out your old faithful for something new. You were starting to hit pan on your old edge control container anyway!

To retrieve all the amazing benefits your hair serum and oil has to offer make sure to keep an eye on the POA label. Hair serums can last up to three years if unopened. However, once it’s been used you have up to a year before you start losing out on the health and styling properties of the product. It’s also a major red flag if the consistency, color, and odor of your hair oil starts to change. In search of a much-needed replacement? Shower your scalp and strands with some TLC.
