How to Fix a Seriously Stubborn Knot

Few of us are exempt from experiencing the frustrating effects of a stubborn hair tangle. Whether it’s a result of a professional updo followed by an all-night party, or a symptom of a curly head in need of a haircut, it can be managed without taking extreme measures or breaking out the peanut butter! Before you start snipping, read on for several detangling steps that don’t involve scissors.

Isolate The Knot

Go in front of a mirror to get a good look at the knot. It’s helpful to pull back the rest of your hair so that you can clearly locate the snarl and not be distracted by the rest of your strands.

Work The Knot

Next, start working hair away from the knot, but be careful how you go about this. Pulling on the hair strands above the knot will only tighten the knot. Instead, focus on pulling strands from the bottom of the knot to the top. Once you’ve done what you could here, move on to the next step.

Add Slip

You know how when you’re applying conditioner to your hair, and your fingers slide right through? We call that slip. So, you know what to do here: Grab your conditioner or a detangling product (we’re partial to Kinky-Curly Knot Today“>, and proceed to apply a generous amount to the knot. Adding slip will help hair strands slide and loosen with less friction. After you apply conditioner, repeat the process of gently pulling strands apart again from the bottom of the knot to the top. Depending on the size and tightness of the tangle, this may or may not be the last step.

Utilize Your Hair Tools

If your knot is still being stubborn, now’s the time for tough love. Use a spray bottle to spray the knot with water, and apply some more conditioner as well. Then, grab a comb and stick one “tooth” smack dab in the middle of the knot, and gently pull the tooth through the tangled hair. Comb from the bottom of the knot to the top by sticking the tooth in the snarl.

Be Patient

You may need to use a combination of loosening the knot with the comb and then pulling the loose hairs out with your fingers. If your patience is wearing thin, take a break and step away, then come back when you’re feeling up to it. A short fuse and a tough knot are a recipe for disaster.

Above all else, prevention is the key. If your hair is generally unruly and/or difficult to manage, don’t sleep with it loose. Take care to moisturize your hair every day, and be conscious of your tresses when you feel them rubbing against your clothes or furniture, as these movements could lead to snags and knots. If you do wind up with a tangle, take your time working out the snarl. It’s not a bad idea to try to detangle before every wash; it may seem like a laborious task, but it’s definitely worth it.

When it comes to shopping for your best friend you can just buy her favorite styling product, easy as pie. But what about when it comes to your hubby–or your brother, father, or best guy friend? If you are stuck on what kind of product to buy for your guy here are some nice ideas that are sure to keep him looking well groomed and sharp, and they are super inexpensive, too!

1. Hair Wax

Hair waxes help control stray hairs and frizz while adding shine. They give the rock hard look without the rock hard hold allowing the hair to have some natural movement for the perfect clean yet messy look.

2. Pomade

Pomades are confused with hair waxes very often, but the main difference is that pomades are used for slicked back styles rather than a tousled look. Pomades are sure to make any man feel sophisticated.

3. Styling cream

Styling creams work best for men with thirsty, twirly locks. They help add moisture to the hair to control frizz while giving definition and control to nail any style.

4. Gel

Hair gel is perfect for the type of guy who likes to rock daring styles, mohawks and spikes. Gel will provide all the hold and shine he’ll need to rock that daring look.

5. Hairspray

For the guy who always seems to be on the run, hairspray is the best option. Hairspray is great to refresh a style that has loosened throughout the day, and it is the finishing touch to a look to keep it in hold all day.

Peer Pressure & Self-Hate Made Me Relax My Hair

curly-penny graduation curly hair

I was born with straight hair, but as I got older and went through puberty my hair become really frizzy, poofy and it was out of control. The worst part was that my mom’s hair was the same way but she didn’t know squat about curly hair so she just put her hair in a braid every day. Growing up I hung out with the “popular” girls and the popular girls had one trait in common, straight hair.

Relaxers, in general, are meant to destroy the bonds in our hair strands that make our hair curl, and once these bonds are broken they can stay straightened out for long periods of time. Are relaxers used mostly by those with a coilier texture? Yes. Does that mean women with wavy and curly hair don’t use them? Nope.

penny straight hair

I definitely felt pressured to straighten my hair.

I was thirteen years old and I was still trying to fit in by copying the looks of my peers. I remember hanging out with my friends and we’d all be in the bathroom putting on makeup and passing the straightener around to flatten out our imperfections.

I felt like an ugly misfit with my poofy hair so I washed, brushed, blow dried and straightened my hair every single day for a year until I decided to relax it because I thought it would be a better alternative for me.

penny with straight hair

I thought, wow, straight hair for a month without having to heat style every day? Awesome! Yeah, I know, I wasn’t educated about hair back then, if you can tell. But at the time, I thought a relaxer was the perfect permanent solution to my poofy problem.

I kept my relaxed hair and continued to color it and straighten it as well, and I noticed that my hair had gotten thinner and drier. As I got older I went to a new school, and I had new friends and I had gone through new experiences. I was beginning to appreciate my natural beauty more and more. I was obsessed with makeup and straight hair when I was thirteen and fourteen but once I turned fifteen I realized I did all those things out of self-hate.

curly penny

Every morning I would change my persona because I hated the person that God made me, and I finally realized that I was wrong. There’s nothing wrong with a little primping now and then, but when your makeup and straight hair becomes your mask and identity you feel empty without them. Whenever I came out of the shower with a fresh face and my poofy hair I felt disgusting and I immediately took action to cover up what I hated about myself. I created a hazardous self-hate zone that I carried everywhere with me, and it was something I needed to change.

One day, I decided no more makeup and no more relaxers, or straightening or hair dyes. I went cold turkey and man, was it hard. But here I am now. I haven’t heat styled in three years, not even once. I haven’t dyed my hair in three years and I only wear makeup on super rare occasions. I am really proud of how far I have come. I embrace my natural face and my natural hair, and I have never been more confident I my life.

curly penny

So why did I relax my hair? I did it out of self-hate.

And why did I decide to stop relaxing, straightening and dyeing? Because I wanted to be more confident in who I was, who I truly was, naturally, not the fake persona that I made up every morning. I am still not quite sure why my hair turned curly out of nowhere, but I’m really glad it did because I have learned how to love myself how God intended.

What inspired you to quit relaxing your hair and return natural?

The Protein You Should Try Now (and No, It’s Not Keratin)

silk protein

Proteins create quite the buzz within the natural hair community. Whether you love them or hate them they are necessary for your hair’s health.

Hair itself is made out of the protein keratin. There are many types of proteins that can be of use for the health of our hair, but one of the most unique and interesting of proteins is silk protein. What is it? How can it benefit your hair?

Where do silk proteins come from?

A protein can be derived from multiple sources including plants and animals:

Silk protein, specifically, is extracted from silk. But where does silk come from? Well, this may sound a bit creepy, but it comes from insects. When growing, the larvae of a silkworm forms a cocoon made of silk that they create with glands within their bodies that secrete silk. This silk is primarily made from the proteins sericin and fibroin. The amino acids that make up these proteins are then used in hair products.

Silk for shine & moisture

A silk protein performs the same primary functions on the hair as other common proteins, it helps strengthen the hair and helps to fill in the “gaps” between the hair cuticles to make the hair more resistant to breakage. But what makes silk protein so special?
Silk protein helps to improve the shine of the hair while also adding to the hairs elasticity to prevent breakage. It also has great moisture binding capabilities helping your hair to retain moisture for longer periods of time.

So, should you be seeking silk protein? If you find that your hair is lacking in luster, healthy elasticity and tensile strength then you may be in need of some products that contain silk protein.

Have you tried one of these hair products containing silk protein extract?

Tea Tree Oil: The Cure-All for Your Problem Hair & Skin

Don’t be fooled by the tiny bottles that carry tea tree oil, this stuff is strong and it has amazing benefits. Weirdly enough, tea tree oil has nothing to do with tea but it does come from a tree.

The oil is extracted from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant which is commonly found in Australia. The color of tea tree oil ranges from clear to a pale yellow and it has an intense camphoraceous smell that is sure to wake you up.

The main thing about tea tree oil is that it provides cure-all care to endless hair and skin issues. It is a natural disinfectant, antibacterial, antiseptic, stimulant, fungicide, acne treatment and it’s great for aromatherapy and seborrheic dermatitis.

The majority of tea tree oil is composed of the chemical Terpinen-4-ol, which seems to be the main reason behind the wonders of tea tree oil. As you can tell, this oil has strong effects so a little goes a long way–like, a super tiny amount.

Unlike every other oil, tea tree oil doesn’t have a viscous consistency, it’s extremely watery and it should not be applied liberally like you would with coconut oil. When you use tea tree oil make sure it is diluted with either water in a spray bottle or with a carrier oil such as olive oil. For optimal and safe use pour in a couple drops of the oil into the solvent because if you use this directly you may experience redness, itchiness and dryness. And although this oil is natural it has been found to be extremely toxic if taken orally, so it will be safer to use this on your hair and skin.

Now that you know the basics of this awesome oil, let’s get into some of the uses.

Acne treatment

There have been trials to see the effectiveness of tea tree oil as an acne treatment and it has been found to be just as effective as benzoyl peroxide. The terpinen-4-ol in the oil will help dry out the pimple while disinfecting it to reduce swelling and redness.

For safest results, dilute 1 drop of oil with a tablespoon of water in a small container and use a q-tip to apply the solution to your problem area.

Athlete’s foot

We all have had those moments, we come home from the gym and as soon as the shoes come off our eyebrows almost burn off from the smell of our feet. No worries, the antifungal properties of tea tree oil will help prevent any growth of fungus and it will immediately get rid of that smell. Just fill a spray bottle with water to the brim and pour in 4 drops of tea tree oil and bam, an all-natural athletes foot spray that will leave your feet cool, fresh and stench free.

Aromatherapy

If you find yourself coming home from work drowsy and fatigued you should give tea tree oil aromatherapy a try. Tea tree oil has a sharp, intense, camphoraceous smell that will be sure to help you wake up and feel energized all the while helping to freshen your home.

Household cleaning

The room in the house that is most likely saturated in microorganisms is the bathroom.  The sink, the bathtub, the shower walls and of course the toilet are appliances that we use every single day to keep our bodies fresh and clean, so make sure you keep these appliances fresh and clean with tea tree oil.

Fill a spray bottle with water to the brim and pour in 5-10 drops of tea tree oil, depending on the size of the bottle and spray it into the sink, bathtub, and toilet to keep it smelling fresh. Its antibacterial properties will help kill weak microbes while also inhibiting further growth.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Being a natural and having seborrheic dermatitis can be tough because doctors are most likely prescribing you chemical products rather than giving you natural alternatives. Lucky for you, tea tree oil has great disinfecting properties that can help clean the scalp from infections as well as help to remove excess flakes.

Just pour a couple of drops into your shampoo and conditioner, try to rinse carefully to avoid it from getting into your eyes. After a few weeks of use you should see the inflammation on your scalp go down as well as the itchiness and flakes.

Stimulating scalp massage

One of the key practices that will help you get longer, healthier hair is scalp massages. Stimulating your scalp will help promote blood flow and the blood cells can help deliver nutrients to the follicle while carrying away wastes. Make your weekly scalp massage even more stimulating with some tea tree oil.

Fill a bottle with any carrier oil, such as olive oil, and pour in 5 drops of tea tree oil and apply it to your scalp and massage. The oil’s intense disinfecting action will become apparent to you once you feel your scalp tingling, which is both refreshing and soothing.

Kim Kardashian’s New Hair Oil (and the Weird Way She Used It)
kim kardashian

If you could name one thing that we naturals are obsessed with it would be oil. Coconut oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, carrot seed oil, you name it, we love it. But it seems that there may be a new oil on the market that will be salon quality and will be sold at an affordable price.

In an interview with Fox FM’s Fifi and Dave, Kim Kardashian claimed that the oil they used to make her glisten in that infamous Paper mag shoot was a new hair oil for her line “Kardashian Beauty.” Interestingly enough, her makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic told the Daily News that it was actually baby oil. Either way, what interests us is the hair oil that Kardashian collaborated with the brand Farouk Systems (you may know them as CHI”> to create, called Black Seed Dry Oil.

WWD reports that this spring we can expect “seven styling products priced from $14 to $17: blow-dry cream, volume mousse, dry shampoo, dry conditioner, firm hair spray, curl cream” and of course the new oil. Kim even uses the oil on North West’s curls to “slick it back and make it stay. I just use a drop of it, but then she brushes it and likes to mess it all up.” Kim told WWD that “the main feedback that we hear is that everybody wants luxury products at an affordable price,” and that may be true for the general population. But what curly women want is a solid list of ingredients that we can feel confident putting on our curls, so we’ll reserve our judgement until we’ve seen a label. Judging by their creative (that’s all we could think of”> use of the product so far, we presume they’ll be advertising its high shine benefits, we just hope that doesn’t involve too many silicones.

Will you give it a try when it comes out? Let us know!

“My country doesn’t sell sulfate-free and silicone-free products”

curly hair art with british flag

Times have changed and more and more women of many races have been making the choice to rock their natural hair texture, whether it be wavy, curly or coily. Seeing so many confident women being proud of their natural texture can be very inspiring and motivating. But here’s the problem, not all countries provide an abundant supply of natural hair brands and products that are essential for healthy natural locks. It can be very frustrating to have all the motivation in the world but none of the resources you need to begin your hair journey. If this is you, do not be discouraged! Stay strong because there is still hope. If you find yourself in this situation here are a few steps you can take to start your healthy hair journey.

Step 1: Learn Your Stuff

In order to find products that will help define your hair texture you need to learn the good ingredients and the bad. It’s all about the ingredients, so you need to become a pro at checking ingredients so that you can find natural healthy products wherever you go. To make this as simple as possible, beware of the two S’s: Sulfates and silicones. Sulfates are drying detergents that are used in shampoos and dishwasher soap (yikes!”>. Sulfates are so harsh that they strip your scalp of its sebum, a natural oil our body produces to lubricate itself.

Removing your sebum with a harsh cleanser on a frequent basis can lead to complications with frizz, breakage and scalp issues. As a rule of thumb, if the ingredient ends in the word “sulfate” avoid it. The most common are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate.

Now silicones. For the most part silicones are not water soluble and can only be removed with a sulfate filled cleanser. So if you stop using sulfates and your products contain silicones the silicones will build up on your hair and cause frizz complications.

As a rule of thumb, if the word ends in –cone, -conol, -xane, -col, avoid it! The most common are cyclopentasiloxane and dimethicone.

Step 2: Product Hunting

Now that you know the bad ingredients, save a date on your calendar and commit it to Holy Grail shopping. What does this mean? It means saving a day to check every single product possible in every single store near you. I know, it sounds kind of weird and obsessive-compulsive but hey, it won’t hurt to try. Who knows, maybe the perfect product is hiding on the bottom shelf of that product aisle and you never bothered checking the ingredients.

Check every single bottle of product that interests you, and if they all contain junk then go to another store and repeat the ingredient checking spree and so on and so forth until you have checked all the products you can possibly check.

Step 3: Do it Yourself

If your product hunting failed, do not worry, there are still a few options. DIY’s! Experiment with your own natural concoctions at home. Take advantage of the unique resources around you– if your country has abundant clay powders try making clay shampoo by diluting the clay in an empty bottle with water. Baking soda mixed with warm water makes a decent shampoo as well. And don’t take fruits and vegetables for granted, avocados and bananas make great natural hair conditioners. And never forget oils! Oils provide the benefits of a styling product, except they’re natural and nourishing to both your hair and scalp. You can also do some deep google research on creative DIY’s or even buy a book on natural hair recipes.

Step 4: The No-Poo Method

This tip kind of falls under the DIY section but it deserves its own section because of its uniqueness. The no-poo method is an infamous method in which absolutely no commercial products are used; baking soda and apple cider vinegar are used to replace your shampoo and conditioner, respectively. Usually, one teaspoon to one tablespoon of baking soda is mixed into 1-2 cups of warm water and it is poured over the head in the shower and then massaged into the scalp.

After the massage it is then rinsed out and followed by an apple cider vinegar rinse, in which a couple of tablespoons of ACV are diluted by 1-2 cups of water. The baking soda opens the hair cuticle and allows all the gunk to be rinsed off of the hair and the apple cider vinegar closes the hair cuticle giving the hair tremendous shine and frizz control. You can also google the method and you will see a lot of in depth articles and tutorials on how to use this method.

Step 5: Ordering Online

If all else fails, order online. Shipping can be expensive but once you find your staple products on a good site you’ll be good to go. Lots of ladies order products from ebay and Amazon, but beware, sometimes you can get scammed by the seller. But lucky for you, we have an online shop that ships to over 240 countries. Shop.NaturallyCurly.com has an abundant and satisfying supply of products guaranteed to make you and your curls happy!

How to Co-Wash Naturally Curly Hair

how to cowash curly hair

Co-washing, a curly girl’s life saver

If you find that even sulfate free shampoo is too drying for your locks give cowashing a shot. Co-washing is short for conditioner washing, in which you use conditioner to cleanse your scalp instead of shampoo.

What is that, you say? Conditioners can’t cleanse? Of course they can!

The basic chemistry principle of “like dissolves like” explains how the lipids in a conditioner can dissolve the lipids our skin secretes, thus helping to clean our scalp from excess sebum. And since conditioner doesn’t dry out your hair it is gentle enough to be done every day, for all you ladies who like to wash your hair every day this can be a great alternative. The benefits of cowashing include moisture, frizz control and, depending on the content of protein in your conditioner, hair strengthening. But of course, you should look into the cons as well.

Keep 2 things in mind: silicones & clarifying

When choosing a conditioner to co-wash with make sure it is silicone free to reduce your chances of buildup.

For the most part, silicones are not water soluble and without the use of sulfates they can cause massive buildup thus leading to limp and fuzzy curls. But even if your conditioner is silicone-free, you may find yourself experiencing build up once a while, so make sure to set up a weekly or monthly schedule to clarify your hair to get rid of all the excess conditioner. So, how do you cowash? Here we have CurlyPenny giving a demonstration of how to cowash. It’s so easy that you’ll be tempted to hop into the shower and give it a try right now.

5 Lessons Our Curly Hair Teaches Us

How to be patient

When you ask a curly about their hair journey, you will likely find that it has taken them years to grow out their heat damage while going through weird transitions to reach the point where they are at now. Not to mention the time consuming pre-poo and conditioning treatments we do to keep our hair healthy. Curlies have come to accept that there are no overnight miracle treatments for health and growth, and that those things take time and patience.

To never give up

Curlies love to experiment, and those experiments can fail and leave you with horrendous results. Grease ball hair, dry scalp, hair breakage, hair loss, etc. But even through our fails we choose to not give up and keep looking for new ways to keep our hair healthy to reach our goals, we refuse to lose!

To be brave

We live in a society that misunderstands curly hair and adores pin straight hair, and as a result the notion of wearing their hair naturally curly has become a scary concept for many women hiding behind straighteners and perms. Indeed, it is scary to against the norm, but we curlies love a good test to stick it to the man and scream, “I love my crazy hair!” even though we may get crazy stares from others (which we secretly love”>.

How to go with the flow

Flat hair one day, and crazy volume the next. Dry roots one week and greasy roots the next. Any curly will be more than ready to say that their hair has a mind of its own. But that’s okay! Instead of freaking out over little imperfections, naturals have learned to wake up in the morning and say, “Well, I guess these are my curls today” and we do what we can to rock our hair of the day! We work with what we got. Ever heard of OOTD? (outfit of the day”>. Well, we have HOTD (hair of the day”>.

How to think outside of the box

“You do what?!” is one of the most common responses curlies will receive from those who are not very experienced in the curly hair field. Yes, we use vegetables in our hair. And yes some of us have completely ditched shampoo altogether. But that’s because we do what is best for OUR hair, not what is best for everyone else’s locks. We do what we gotta do boo. It don’t matter if we look crazy, as long as our hair looks crazy cute to US!
