Ouidad Q&A: Achieving Second-Day Hair

Dear Ouidad: How does one maintain her look for the next day without having to wash her hair again? Is it better to wash the hair every day?

A: When you sleep, put the hair in loose ponytail on the top of the head to preserve curls as best as possible for the morning. In the morning, use Botanical Boost to refresh your curls. After your hair is dry, you can use a drop of Shine Glaze and your hair will look beautiful for the day. In terms of washing your hair, generally it isn’t necessary to shampoo daily. Your curl pattern should dictate how often you should shampoo.

  • Loose waves – 2-3 times per week

  • Curly/Tight – 1-2 times per week

  • Kinky – 1 time per week

Ouidad Q&A: Late-Day Control

Dear Ouidad: What is the best way to control curls at the end of the day?

A: I always recommend the Botanical Boost Moisture Infusing & Refreshing Spray to re-cap curls at the end of the day. Spray on dry hair, and with your palm smooth hair down. Then, placing your fingers at your scalp, shake the curls out at the roots.

Ouidad Q&A: Should I Use a Diffuser?

Dear Ouidad: When you have naturally curly hair, is it best if you use a diffuser? Or a product in conjunction with a diffuser?

A: First, curls are better if they are left to air dry, and products will help set them in place. However, many of us need to have our hair dry before we leave the house. So you can use a diffuser, but use low heat and use products such as Climate Control that will help protect the hair from heat and help hold the style.

Ouidad Q&A: Are Ponytails Bad?

Dear Ouidad: Is it damaging to constantly have my hair in a ponytail during the day? Does this damage my hair at the root?

A: Yes, and yes. You are stretching out your curls and can be ripping out hair along your hairline. You can put it back but more loosely, not tight, so you don’t stretch out your curl pattern. And I would certaily not recommend a ponytail every day.

Ouidad Q&A: Help My Different Textures

Dear Ouidad: I’m 16 years old. My hair has been giving me a lot of trouble lately and I was wondering if there was anything you could do to help. My hair is about three inches or so below my shoulders, and it is extremely curly. However, it has a lot of different textures. In the very front, the hair is soft and has loose curls. The curls at the back of my head are very tight corkscrew curls. The underneath layer is composed of mostly tight, defined curls, but the top layer, especially on the back of my head, has little curl definition and is mostly kinky, frizzy waves.

I have tried all I can to condition my curls, but I can never seem to get the back part of my hair under control. I would love for all of my hair to be like those several strands in the front, but the rest of my hair just won’t cooperate. I am currently using Nexxus shampoo and conditioner in my hair (it was recommended by my hairdresser”> and it seems to moisturize my hair fairly well, but I still have tons of frizz in the back. I just don’t know how to keep that large, dry bit of hair hydrated any more that I already am. I would do anything to get rid of that frizz!!

Puppy

This picture has nothing to do with anything.

It may sound silly, but I have always wished I could run my fingers through my hair without worrying that it will frizz up in the spots where I touched it; or that I could let my hair down and shake it out without it blowing up like a balloon. However, since I’m only sixteen I don’t know if it would be smart to do a permanent treatment such as a softening treatment. I have tried straightening my hair, but it takes up to two hours to do it right, and it only seems to look good when my hairstylist straightens it. Is there any way I can get looser curls, or simply less frizzy curls, without spending a fortune? Are there any products I can try (either that I could find a store or from NaturallyCurly.com”> that will give my curls the desired look? I have not yet found a leave-in conditioner or “curl-defining spray” that takes the frizz out of my hair. In fact, most products I have used tend to give my hair more frizz once it dries, make it brittle, or dry it out. If you have the time, I would love for you to write me back. Let me know if you want me to clarify anything about my hair or the products I have previously used. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

A: To get looser, less-frizzy curls you need proper conditioning and styling for your curls. The natural curl pattern of your hair can’t be changed, but you can coax frizzier, tighter curls into a more defined look. Be sure the products you use are all water soluble (all of my products are”> so that they won’t build up in the hair and weigh curls down. However products alone will not automatically transform your unmanageable curls. Visit Ouidad.com for information on my Rake & Shake styling technique that will help you style your curls.

Ouidad Q&A: Is a Diffuser OK?

Dear Ouidad: My name is Jennifer, and I am a huge fan of Ouidad. My question is, should I be air drying or is it ok to dry with a diffuser? The problem is I air dry most of the time, but depending on the weather, that doesn’t always work for me. Please help me to figure out a routine for my curls!

A: You can definitely use a diffuser, but try to use medium heat so you do not dry out your hair. Also, be sure to focus on the roots and gently lay your curls in the diffuser without too much scrunching.

Ouidad Q&A: Who Can Cut My Curly Hair?

Dear Ouidad: I am a woman from Montreal, Quebec, and I can’t seem to find the right hairdresser for my type of curls. I have naturally curly, medium-length hair. Actually, the hair look shorter than it actually is because the hair springs up. I have been procrastinating getting a haircut because I am afraid the hairdresser will not give me a haircut I can live with. I am quite neurotic when it comes to hair. It is true, too, that not many hairdressers know how to cut curly hair. Do you know any hairdresser from the city of Montreal who specializes in curly haircuts? Anyway, any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

A: Visit my website, for a listing of salons that are certified to cut hair with my trademarked Carve & Slice cutting technique. Cutting curly hair should be done by someone who understands curly hair and knows how it reacts to a cut.

Ouidad Q&A: Which is Better—Flat Ironing or Blow Drying?

Q: I have kinky coily hair that I would like to straighten sometimes. I’m aware that all forms of heat are damaging so I am hoping that you could tell me the least damaging; flat ironing or blowing drying.

A: Blow drying is the least damaging because flat irons use a lot of pressure with heat so they cause more damage to the hair more. I suggest using a round brush with a blow dryer on medium heat.

Ouidad Q&A: Please Help Me with My Child’s Hair

Q: I have a 5-year-old with natural curly hair; he is half white and half black with very tight, beautiful curls. I have to put him in the shower every morning so I can do his hair, because his hair gets so dry. We have tried all kinds of products but nothing seems to keep it moisturized for longer than 12 hours. I would like to find something to put in his hair and not have to wet it down the next morning just to get him to look presentable. Is there a product you recommend that will hydrate the hair so we don’t have to constantly get it wet . . . I try to only shampoo once a week . . . but I have to wet it down every day to do anything to it (brush it”>.

A: Try using my KRLY Kids Pump N Go Spray. It will help to detangle and re-wet the hair just enough to activate the curls. With the spray there is not need to completely re-saturate hair.

Ouidad Q&A: Help My Frizzy Hair!

You can learn more about the 12-Minute Deep Treatment here.

Dear Ouidad: I have curly/wavy hair and am naturally curly!

My hair is a type 2a or 2b, it is a bit longer than my shoulders, and most of the time: CRAZY!

My hair seems to like to poof out in the most unrealistic forms, some days I could swear it is out to get me.

I am a teenager, so looks are important to me, and I just can’t seem to get the right one!

Anyway, my hair is wavy, frizzy, and about half the time it will dry in curls (the curls are loose, but are in ringlets”>, which will tangle and mat themselves in one another.

I would love to find a natural, inexpensive product that could work in my hair, whether it would make it more or less curly, it does not matter to me, either works. I will even go get my hair cut, if that is was it takes; I just want it to look O.K.! I live on an island, with a couple hair salons near my house, but none of them specialize in curls! What a shame! Oh did I mention my hair is THICK, I have never come across a person with as much hair as me, but I’m sure that there is someone out there. My hair is cut in long layer in the back, that’s about it!

Hoping you can help!

A: First and foremost, be sure to keep your hair hydrated—this will help with the frizz and matting. Use my 12-Minute Deep Treatment weekly until your hair becomes more manageable. Also, you can style your hair with Climate Control Gel which will help give the curls hold and definition as well as help with your frizz. If you have trouble finding Ouidad products at a salon, you can always order online at Ouidad.com. On my site you will also find lots of information and how-to videos to help you style and care for your curls.

Ouidad Q&A: What Do I Look For In a Stylist?

Dear Ouidad: What should I look for in a stylist (if no Certified Salon available”>?

A: If you are unable to visit a Ouidad or Ouidad Certified salon, here are my tips for finding a great curly hair stylist:

Word of Mouth – When you see someone who has your hair type with a cut you really admire, ask where they get their hair cut.

Reputation – Call a salon in your area that has a great reputation. Describe your specific hair concerns to the receptionist and ask him or her for a stylist recommendation. Also, be sure to describe what type of cut you are looking for—trendy, classic—as this will also help him or her point you in the right direction.

Curly Hair – Call around and look for a stylist that has curly hair. Most likely, he or she has dealt with the same curl-related issues that you have and understands your needs.

Let’s hope not. We wouldn’t want to be deprived of these pretty, loose, flowing brunette curls.

Ouidad Q&A: Curly Hair Q&A: Can I Over-Condition My Hair?

A: Not with my product line. My products use moisturizing proteins that are gentle and effective on curls and won’t leave them over-conditioned.

Ouidad Q&A: I Need a Good Haircut

Q: I received a bad cut 10 months ago that stripped out most of my 3a curl (which I used to just air dry with drugstore products”>. I’ve tried a Deva cut and have spent a ton of money on other specialty cuts and products but have yet to see my spirals come back, even when I use a diffuser. I’m lucky if I get 2a curls now! Any suggestions on how to get my curls back, and how long it should take?

A: It sounds like the damage the ends of your curly hair may have been caused by cutting with a razor rather than scissors. Razors can cause damage to the ends of the curl. In the future, be sure to visit a stylist that will cut your hair with a scissors. Also, if you can get to one of my flagship NYC or Santa Monica salons or one of my certified salons, a Carve & Slice cut will help bring some of your curl back!

Ouidad Q&A: Why Am I Losing My Hair?

Dear Ouidad: In my teens and early 20s, I had thick, type 3b (I think”> hair. I had to have it thinned out occasionally. Since I’ve had my third child, and in my 30s, I have lost more than half of it. My hair is longer now, finally, than I had always kept it before. I also take better care moisturizing it than I ever did. Why am I losing it, and what can I do? I wash it two times a week, and by that time it is usually matted together, and feels like straw. Of course, tons falls out, also. My mother did the same way; I remember her talking about her thinning hair and bald spots where her hair parted. I do not style my hair much. For the last 15 years I’ve always let it air dry. Though as a teenager, I always blow dried it, and never lost much hair. Please tell me what I can do—I will try anything.

A: Often hair can change as a result of stress, a health issue or hormones. In most cases it’s just a normal change in the body as we age. If you’re concerned that something else is going on I would recommend speaking with your doctor. In the meantime, you can use my PlayCurl products for added volume and lift.
