Weekend of Weddings
Chelsea clinton wedding

Chelsea Clinton is all smiles as she marries Marc Mezvinsky in Rhinebeck, N.Y. “Today, we watched with great pride and overwhelming emotion as Chelsea and Marc wed in a beautiful ceremony at Astor Courts, surrounded by family and their close friends,” former president Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement.

Alicia Keys Weddings

Bells were ringing this weekend for two curly girls. The long awaited nuptials between Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky took place this weekend at Astor Courts in Rhineback, NY, and a surprise wedding between Alicia Keys and producer boyfriend Swizz Beatz was held at a private residence on the Mediterranean Sea in Corsica, France. Both blushing brides looked stunning in Vera Wang gowns accompanied by sleek straightened up-dos that were pulled away from the face. (So much for hoping there would be a new curly wedding style to imitate.”> We wish both couples the best of luck!

How to Create a Smoky Eye

The sexy, sultry smoky eye is one of the hottest trends in beauty, but can also be one of the hardest to achieve. Let Sephora, the visionary beauty retailer, show you the latest innovation to get the look that makes it easier than ever before: Kat Von D High Voltage Eye Primer in Smoky, a uniquely formulated, creamy eye primer with a deeper tint made especially to work with darker shadows.

“An eye primer is essential in creating the smoky eye because of all the layering and blending you need to do with dark, rich pigment shadows,” says José Rivera, Principal Artist for Sephora’s PRO Beauty Team. “This primer not only helps shadows stay put, but the darker color blends seamlessly and enhances the smoky effect.”

Watch José create the look and follow his tips below.

José’s smoky eye tips:

  • Blend High Voltage Eye Primer in Smoky on the lid and under the eye
  • Dust the brush with shadow, invert it at an angle and press it into the lashline
  • Press and feather out color as you move the brush upwards and outwards using smooth strokes
  • Smudge the shadow under the eye along the lashline
  • Finish the eye look with a strong lash by curling and applying several coats of rich black mascara

Celebrity stylist Emilio Uribe reminds us to “always hydrate your hair especially when you’re out in the sun, by the pool or the beach.”

My secret to maintain your hair looking healthy in summer is:

Reviver Hair Repair Conditioner

  2. Get a spray bottle
  3. Choose your De Fabulous hair treatment: (for problem hair or scalp problems”>

DIY Beauty Tips

Bestselling author Christie Mellor is declaring war on the onset of summer psychoses. Her new book, “You Look Fine, Really, REALLY,” lays out stress-free ways we can look good and feel good about ourselves. Now, just in time for the hottest days of summer, she’s sharing some DIY beauty tips with NaturallyCurly.com readers.

olive oil

Tip #1:

Clean your face with a mixture of olive oil and a teaspoon of sugar. It makes such a nice scrub and will make your skin feel like velvet. Follow that with a honey facial: spread a dollop of (organic, raw”> honey on your face, leave it on for fifteen minutes, and rinse. Then grate some chilled cucumber into a bowl and spread that all over your nice clean face. Lie down for another ten minutes or so, preferably with your head on a towel—it’s a messy proposition.

Tip #2:

Attempt to avoid the toxic chemicals that have been discovered hiding in sunscreens— try out the various mineral sunblocks out on the market, to see which ones work the best. And keep your eyes peeled for good hats. Collect them. Make the hat your friend. A wide-brimmed hat—or a cute parasol—is not only stylish, it won’t sting your eyes or make your face greasy.

parasol

Tip #3:

Faux tans usually look faux for a reason; when a real person has been out in the real sun, the results are a lovely combination of colors, like a sun-kissed painting. Of course, too much sun is not good for our skin, but the uniform spraying of a tanning solution on the face and neck usually makes the wearer look oddly stained. Instead, a mixture of a bronzing powder and a blush can be used to nice effect when you want that sun-drenched look without the attendant melanoma. Just brush it on with a light hand, exactly where the sun would have kissed your face, had you been imprudently lying about in it. Your forehead, the apples of your cheeks, and the bridge of your nose are all safe bets.

CURLS Provides Recipe for Beautiful Curls

Summer need not leave your curls and kinks dry and frizzy. With the right products—and some help from ingredients in your kitchen—your hair will look its best throughout the dog days of August.

Mahisha Dellinger, creator of the CURLS and Curly Q’s lines of products, provides these easy tips

  1. Before you enter a pool, lake, ocean or any body of water, drench your hair with water and apply a generous coat of conditioner mixed with a natural oil of your choice (Dellinger prefers olive oil”>. This oil/conditioner mixture will fill up the gaps in your hair shaft and act as a barrier to the chlorinated water.
  2. Immediately after swimming in chlorinated or salt water, purify your curls with a clarifying shampoo. Dellinger recommends Pure Curls Clarifying Shampoo. Formulated to rid the hair of these curl-killing chemicals, it is the ideal summer cleanser to gently and effectively remove chlorine. Pineapple extract nourishes as grapefruit extract adds sheen while removing buildup from unwanted chemicals. Follow up with a deep conditioner.
  3. Pamper your curls after a day in the sun. Whip up your very own CURLS concoction and give your curls a post-swim treatment with your very own Milk & Honey Hair Smoothie.
  4. Milk & Honey Hair Smoothie

    • 1 can of pure coconut milk (rich moisturize—hydrates, conditions and defrizzes hair”>
    • 1 ripe avocado (natural source of protein—chlorine robs the hair of protein”>
    • 2 tablespoons of pure honey (conditions and adds sheen”>
    • 2 tablespoons of olive oil (hydrophobic oil that acts as a barrier to chlorine and salt water”>

Add ingredients to blender. Mix at high speed until your concoction reaches a smoothie consistency.

Store in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. You can warm up your hair smoothie in the microwave before next application. Just enough do de-chill.

    Substitutions

    • Feel free to substitute the olive oil for any natural oil of your choice.
    • Add more oil for extra dry hair, e.g. 1 tablespoon.
    • Add more honey for hair that needs more sheen, e.g. 2 tablespoons.

    Instructions for Use

    • Section hair into 4 segments.
    • Generously apply evenly to hair, from root to ends concentrating on ends…as they are the most prone to damage.
    • Smooth hair into a protective style (e.g. braided ponytail, or bun”>.

  5. Enjoy your day at the pool, lake, or ocean!

Third Time’s the Best Yet

As many of you know, I was very leery of having a keratin treatment. I had to be convinced that it would not take away my curls or ruin my hair.

Little did I know that I would become an addict.

Five months later, I just had my third treatment done. CurlStylist was doing a demo for a company, and they needed another head of hair to work on. I had just had it done for the second time a month ago, but offered my curls up. The curl had tightened up quite a bit anyway.

The treatment I had done was very similar to a Brazilian Blowout, with similar application. Zac Watson of Dolce & Co. in Arizona provided some new insights, including the fact that the iron temperature can affect how straight the hair gets. Since I wanted curl, he had it at a lower temperature than he would for someone who wanted a smoother look.

This time around, my hair was noticeably straighter, even after the product was rinsed out and my hair was air dried. I have to admit that it freaked me out a little. But four days later, it’s probably a 3a (I’m usually a 3b”>, with a lot of shine and definition. It feels really soft, and I have no frizz despite Hurricane Alex wreaking havoc on Austin’s weather.

Leela James’ Large Hair

As I was sitting in my room, flipping through television channels, I came across the beautiful, large natural curliness of singer Leela James while she was a guest on the Mo’Nique Show on BET.

She was on the show June 24 promoting her newest album “My Soul” which was released in May. She looked absolutely gorgeous and I couldn’t help but marvel over the abundance of tightly coiled curls that sat atop her head.

All I have to say to Leela James is Thank You for embracing your curls in a major way.

Vh1 Basketball Wives Reunion Show

Sunday night’s Vh1 Basketball Wives reunion was drama-filled, to say the least. Suzie Ketcham, former girlfriend of Michael Olowokondi, was arrested during the reunion show after heaving what looked like a bucket of water on Sandra Rose, a “model”/event planner who allegedly messed around with Jennifer Williams’ husband, ex-Celtics player Eric Williams. Suzie and Sandra (nicknamed “Plastic Surgery” by the ladies of the show”> have a history of turmoil which can be seen in an episode of the first season when Suzie threw a drink at Sandra at a restaurant in Miami.

Despite the drama, each wife or ex-wife or ex-fiance rocked some variation of a curly or wavy do.

In the above photo, host Tanika Ray and Evelyn Lozada, ex-fiance of former NBA star Antoine Walker discuss the first season and they both look gorgeous. Tanika is sporting a softer curl which is slightly different from the tight coiled curls she usually wears. Evelyn, wears her long blond hair in cascading waves.

Suzie wore her long brunette hair in loose ringlets and Jennifer Williams sported a side-swept curly do.

Got Waves? Lauren Conrad’s Wavy Locks

Lauren “LC” Conrad former star of the MTV reality show “The Hills”, author and designer wore her long blond hair straight with a slight wave at the bottom at the unveiling of her “Got Milk?” ad at the Grove in Los Angeles on June 16. She wore a one-piece 3.1 Phillip Lim navy jumper with dark, copper-toned Louboutin sandals.

In her “Got Milk?” ad, Lauren wears long, flowing beach waves which is supposed to represent the “California Girl” theme of the ad. Lauren is the newest face of the “Got Milk?” campaign and fans all over the world got to decide which look would be ‘the look’ for the new ad. Voters were also automatically entered in a contest to win fashion and beauty items from Lauren’s ad shoot, a professional style session and the chance to attend the ad unveiling event.

Carrot Top or Curly Top?

Yes, this is comedian Carrot Top or Scott Thompson. Let’s take a moment to focus not on the *cough* surgically enhanced face but rather the giant, bright orange hair that’s seeping out of the bottom of his baseball cap. He was photographed at the premiere of E!’s reality show “Holly’s World” on June 13 in Las Vegas.
