New Year’s is right around the corner, and its about time to start off the new year with a new ‘do. Putting a spin on an old style, this curly bun is casual and chic — perfect for greeting the new year with your friends and family!
MORE: Wavy Holiday Updos or Kinky Holiday Updos
For this holiday hair style, all you’ll need are some bobby pins, hairspray and your curly tresses. Done and done.
New Year, New Curls Are Here!
- Wash, condition and set your hair as usual. It is important that your hair is completely dry for this updo. The natural movement of the curls is essential to create the perfect, unique bun.
- Once hair is dry, lightly pull hair back into a low ponytail, letting curls fall where they may in doing so. Twist the ponytail lightly and then wrap it around the base. Secure with a hair elastic.
- Lightly pull on the hair, much like you would to tighten a ponytail, in order to expand the bun. Be sure not to pull it all the way out of the elastic.
- Once the bun is to the size that you desire, pin the curls that have fallen out of the main bun back on the top of the bun. This will add a dynamic element to the bun. Use hairspray to keep curls in place.
- Be sure to allow for natural placement of the curls around your face. This will frame your face and add to the casual look of the updo. If necessary, spray these curls with a water and gel mixture and wrap them around your finger to create more curl and definition.
This holiday hair style shouldn’t take you any more than ten minutes. Remember that imperfections and loose curls are encouraged here, so think outside last year’s box and let your curls reign in the New Year!

Heading out to formal holiday parties this holiday season, but don’t want to have to take out your locs for the occasion? Running out of time and ideas? Don’t panic!
MORE: Wavy Holiday Updos or Curly Holiday Updos
There’s no reason your locs can’t attend a formal event with you! Don’t believe us? Take a peek, and learn how you can rock the fabulous holiday hair style this season. Hint: it’s super easy!
Get the French Braid Pony Loc Look
Locs are a classic style. They take a while to put in, but girl, do they last or do they last?
Seriously, their time-saving benefits could listed for miles, so why drop the style when a formal holiday invite comes along?
Follow these steps and yourself a classy, loc updo that is perfect for any fancy holiday event.
- Starting at your hair line at the top of your head, begin French braiding. For each section of the French braid, grab about four to five of the locs.
- To French braid, start close to the scalp, and for this style at the hairline, and separate hair into three sections containing four to five locs each. Begin braiding by crossing the strand in your right hand over to the strand in the middle. The right strand should now be in the middle. Next, cross the left strand over the middle strand. The middle strand should now be in the left hand. Continue this method down your mane, continually adding more locs as you move down.
- Once you reach the nape of your neck, take one of the locs and wrap it around the remaining loose locs, like you would a rubber band. Tuck the loc up underneath the braid, pulling it through a bit from above. Using a bobby pin, securely pin the loc in place.
- To make sure that the style is secure, shake your head back and forth to make sure that the “rubber band” loc doesn’t come loose. And you’re finished!
Over all, this holiday hair style shouldn’t take more than ten minutes, and you can be on your way, locs and all, to your next holiday bash!

Holiday hair styles just wouldn’t be complete without something rocking. Something that will get you on ABC when the ball drops in Times Square. No, scratch that — WHILE the ball drops!
MORE: Wavy Holiday Updos or Curly Holiday Updos
Naturally, this style has to be pretty easy, but look like it took hours so that you can walk your sexy self through Times Square and right up to Barbara Walters and say, “Hey! I modeled for Vogue last month. They said I could meet you here for the interview.”
Additional Information about this TipWhat do models wear best, after all, than a hairstyle that grabs attention? Something like, oh I don’t know, a mohawk?
Now don’t go freaking out. This isn’t going to be an article about big chopping the majority of your hair just to get a mohawk look for New Year’s Eve.
- Flip your head and coils upside down. Then, beginning at the nape of your neck, take about five to six pieces of your hair and cross it over to the other side.
- Continue switching sides and crossing the hair over from side to side, adding hair in as your reach the top. If you are familiar with French braiding, it is very similar, except that you are not braiding — just crossing.
- When you get to the top, take two bobby pins and secure the crossed-braid right in the middle. Be sure to make an X formation with the bobby pins for optimal hold.
- Then, flip hair back over and part all of the remaining top portion to the side. Use a pomade, if needed, to keep the coils in place, but still touchable.
Keep in mind that you can do whatever you like with the top portion of hair. Style it how you like it best. For this particular model, she liked the side part better.

We hear it all the time — curly hair rocks! So many people try to get curly hair for all sorts of events, especially the formal ones. So from the straighty’s point of view, our hair is easy peasy to style — heck, it’s already curly so it’s already done!
As holiday season approaches and your party calendar keeps filling up, we know that this is just not the case! Curly hair isn’t always easy to style and often times, it leaves us all yearning for a “different” holiday hair style that we just can’t get our curls to give us.
MORE: Wavy Holiday Updos or Kinky Holiday Updos
This holiday season I’m proposing something more, something crazy that you might not expect! I’m proposing that for that next holiday party, you work WITH your curls, rather than against them. This holiday updo works with your ringlets, shows them off, doesn’t involve a hint of heat styling and is easy, but looks professional!
Don’t take my word for it. Give it a try!
Ringlet Rampage
Be sure that you have tons of bobby pins and a spray bottle of a water and gel mixture on hand before you begin.
- Wash, condition and set your curls as usual. For this holiday hair style, you will want them to be completely dry. If you are short on time and air drying is not an option, grab a diffuser and get to drying.
- Pull the top section of your hair back and into a high ponytail. Pull up the bottom layer of your hair into a lower ponytail. Make sure that these two ponytails are a good bit apart from one another, but not on separate ends. Do not place the top ponytail on top of your head and the bottom one at the nape. Instead, place them close together, but not on top of each other.
- Beginning with the top ponytail, take a curl and begin twisting it around your finger to form a coil or ringlet. Spray the coil with your water and gel mix, then pin in place. Continue this process with the entire top ponytail. It helps if you begin with the bottom layer of the ponytail and work to the top.
- Moving to the bottom ponytail, you will follow the same process as with the top ponytail. However, you want to be sure that you place the coils so that the area between the two ponytails is hidden by the coils themselves.
This holiday hair style can take anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour due to the process of coiling every individual curl. However, the end result is a fabulous do that celebrates your natural curls!
You curl girl!

A half up style might not be something you’re considering for that big holiday get together. I mean, its so simple and everyday. But what if we could take the half up look and transform it, AND keep its simplicity as your little wavy updo secret? What would you think then?
MORE: Curly Holiday Updos or Kinky Holiday Updos
Well, that’s just what we plan to do with these three variations on a half up holiday hair style from an expert wavy hair stylist here in the Austin area. These styles are quick and easy and will have you holiday ready in a snap — but no one has to know how little time it actually cost you!
Get Loose Half Up Holiday Hair
- With your natural parting, gently roll your curls away from your face on both sides and stitch-pin. To stitch-pin, using the ends of the hairpin, grab hair closest to the scalp at the end of your roll and “wrap” around the roll, tucking all the hair around and over itself with a hairpin or a bobby pin. A hairpin will disappear easier in curls and holds better in a looser way. Then, choose one of the three variations:
- Chignon: Gather ends and gently twist and coil into a loose spiral and pin with a wig pin (a huge bobby pin of sorts”> crossing the entire coil from underneath, hiding it within the mass, or with several bobby pins, crossing in a radial pattern for stability.
- Braid: Loosely braid the ends and wrap the tail up under the back of one of the half-back front sections done earlier. Pin with bobby pins. For longer hair, try making a chignon with the longer braid or pinning as described below.
- Rope: Take remaining ends and continue rolling them. Wrap the rolled ends in an S pattern along the back of the head and ending at the nape, pinning as you go with bobby pins until you get the “Challah” bread effect.
And voila! Easy as one two or three, and you will have a half updo that you can even change throughout the night if you please! Holiday party stress? Please, you’re too busy prepping the egg nog!

The natural hair family we love to love is back at it – or well, the 11-year old superstar is! Willow Smith premiered her new music video, “Fireball” featuring Nicki Minaj, Dec. 7 on BET’s “106 & Park.”
Willow, best known in the natural hair community as the singer of, “Whip My Hair,” teams up with hip-hop superstar Nicki Minaj, and the two ladies get the party started. While the video features both women sans showcasing their natural hair, Willow’s is straightened and Nicki is in a wig – big surprise, we can’t help but publish a little something-something on the duo!
Once you get past the dance moves that I, as a grown woman, couldn’t ever master, and start listening to the lyrics of the single, it’s hard to turn the track off. Willow is living out every 11-year-old’s dream, and bragging about it to boot!
“I set fire everywhere I play, make them all go insane, L.A. to UK,” and the girl isn’t lying. Willow rocked out in Birmingham, UK in March and performed next to Justin Beiber in L.A. back in October 2010. And fans LOVED it!
Almost makes it a little funny when Minaj jumps in with, “Put you under my wing, I’m the top boss.” Hmm, I don’t think Willow needs any help, Nic, but that’s OK. You probably don’t either. Ah, the bliss of not writing your own lyrics.
Anyway, the single is rockin’ and I’m putting it on replay next to all my other favorite natural haired singles – even if this one isn’t about hair. This lyric counts, “When it’s time to whip your hair, put your braids up,” right?
Side note: Does Roc Nation own EVERYONE? Seriously!
“Fireball” featuring Nicki Minaj
Getting the perfect holiday hair style doesn’t have to take as long as preparing the food does! In fact, just using a simple style that you already know how to do, you can create a look that is original and looks like it took much, much longer than it really did!

After all, the holidays are all about giving and getting — so we’re giving the updo advice and you are getting all the benefits!
Not Your Mother’s Braids
Braids can be so boring. Sure, they get the hair out of your face and are great for protective styling in the winter, and there’s the added bonus of softer waves once you take the braid out. But the braid is old news, and no one sees a braid and thinks, “Cool!”
But we’re about to change that! This braided holiday hair style is not your daughter’s, or your childhood best friend’s usual braided style. No ma’am!
Don’t believe us? Try it out yourself and see how your family swoons at the sight during that looming holiday dinner.
- On freshly washed and set curls, braid the hair like you would normally. Nothing fancy here — no french braid, no fishtail braid. Simply three strands being crossed over one another until you reach the end — except don’t secure with an elastic.
- Once you finish the braid, bring it up to your left or right ear (whichever you prefer”>, and pin it in place. Be sure to hide the end of the braid behind the ear so that no loose strands are sticking out.
- Don’t worry about any loose curls that are too short to be pulled back into the braid. Let these pieces frame your face, or if they are in the back, let them rest of your crown. They will create the illusion of a puff, which will add to the overall style.
- Finish the look with a shine spray and a generous amount of hairspray to keep the braid in place and your curls from flying in the wind.
Overall, the look should take no more than ten minutes. You can create a more casual look by creating a looser braid. Likewise, creating a tighter braid will make the updo look more professional.
Then show your “tired of the braid” friends what they are missing out on!

Classy, Protective Updo for Winter Bliss
Protective styling is a great way to combat split ends and breakage, especially in the colder winter months. Plus, these styles can outlast your gift set shampoo bottle!
Flat twist hairstyles are an easy and beautiful option for your curls. Here’s a quick tutorial for creating a simple flat twist updo.
- After you apply your favorite products, make a part from right to left at the back (bottom of neck”>. Flat-twist the bottom section and then make your next part. When you get to the middle section, make your parts on an angle.
- Flat twist each section until you are all finished. If you have difficulty parting your hair with a rattail comb, finger-part the sections and then have someone else use the rattail comb to clean up your parts.
- When you’re all finished, wrap the ends around each other from front to back and secure with pins. Add your accessories and you’re good to go!

On Tuesday, December 6, one of our favorite curlies, Shakira, debuted her new, albeit straight, haircut!
Shakira tweeted her new look to all of her fans, saying, “4 hours ago I got my hair cut!”
We’re loving the look, but hoping that she kept her curls in mind when making the cut – or that at least her stylist did! As curlies, we know all too well that a short cut made on wet, straight strands is the LAST thing a curly girl who wants to occasionally rock her natural curls should do!
Granted, Shakira hasn’t been letting her textured tresses loose as often as she used to. Like Taylor Swift, maybe her look is a winter trend since many curlies seem to prefer straight looks during the cooler months.
Whatever her deal is, we ain’t hair hating! The bob is cute and the girl is beautiful. Do you, Shakira. Do you!
Textured hair doesn’t always make a huge presence in Hollywood. Most stars opt for straight, “polished” tresses and leave the curly looks for their stay-at-home days when the paparazzi can’t snap photos. But every once in a while, textured hair makes a massive come back and steals the limelight, even if it is only for a couple cover shots.
Today, curlies, is one of those days!
The New York Times Magazine published an online spread of “celebrity villainy, inspired by nefarious icons and featuring the best performers from the year in film.” And who is the star of the series? Brad Pitt as the madman, textured hair and all!
OK, so textured hair is once again being used to portray a case of the crazies, but on Brad Pitt, we kind of just don’t care!
The series, titled “Touch of Evil,” pays tribute to the best horror cinematographers of our time: Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock, just to name the two that come to mind. Each of the 13 stars is featured in their own one-minute short film, showcasing a traditional “evil” character. Word to the wise: watch these with the lights on!
Of all the stars in the series, only two are featured with texture tresses, Pitt and Glenn Close, who plays a curly female we’re assuming is a crazed widow. All the other actors and actresses sport straight strands, proving that crazy comes in all hair types.
Want Brad’s look for yourself? Curly faux-hawks are definitely in style, and you don’t have to unleash your evil side to get it! Simply pull the sides of your set and dry curls back and pin in place. Then, tease the front section all the way through the back. Have longer hair? Pin long curls up under the teased top portion, or rock the hawk all the way down your back!
This holiday season, don’t get left behind! Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone, and if you aren’t stocked up on all your Christmas gifts, girl it is getting close! Lucky for you, we have the perfect holiday updos that can you out shopping late instead of spending all your time getting ready for tonight’s holiday party. We’ll take care of your waves — you take care of everything else!

Double Braided Glory
A simple two-braided updo is easy and can be done on second day hair, helping to hide frizz and get you ready in a snap!
- Part your hair in two. Divide each side of your hair into one inch sections. You will have more or less sections depending on how thick your hair is.
- Take one section and twist your hair by simply twirling it with your fingers.
- Using the comb, tease the top portion of your hair by combing it backwards. Once you have a nice bump, secure the top of your hair with a hair clip.
- Grab three twists at a time and make braids out of each section. Grab your bobby pin and pin your braids down towards the bottom of your neck. Repeat for the other section.
- Finer hair may be harder to keep in twisted braids, so apply a good amount of mousse and hair spray to each twist before pinning your braids together.
If you’d like to add an extra elegant feature, insert flowers, feathers, or any favorite hair accessory into the side of your hair. You’ll have everyone thinking you went to a salon!

With holiday party season right around the corner, you’re probably already stressing about what to do with your curls? Buns are so overworked, you’re thinking. A French twist? Too fancy. Au natural? That’s what I do everyday!

Finding the right curly updos isn’t always the easiest task, but it’s about time you let your creative juices flow. This holiday season, NaturallyCurly is here to help you jazz up this classic style for the holidays.
A Classic Style Outside the Box
A simple bun may be a casual, everyday style, but never underestimate the power of a commonplace look that has been taken outside of its usual box! Here how to use a double bun trick to a create a unique look that we can assure you’ve never done before!
- To start, part your hair on to the side. Beginning with the side that has less hair, grab your hair at the nape of your neck and begin to twist. Once your have twisted the hair, wrap it around the base of the twist to create a bun. Secure with bobby pins.
- Move to the larger side and do the same. When wrapping the twist around the base, for the smaller wrap right, and for the larger twist, wrap left. The larger bun should slightly overlap with the smaller one. Be sure that both buns are secured in place with bobby pins. If you have thicker hair, place two bobby pins in an X formation for the strongest hold.
- Once the buns are secure, pull a few pieces out around your hair line to frame your face. This will give the look a casual, but elegant feel.
- Finally, add an accessory. The difference between the smaller and larger buns creates a perfect spot, right about the smaller bun, for a fun accessory. Go for anything here! The bigger, the better and, with this updo style, weight doesn’t matter. Because the smaller bun is secured itself, and positioned under the larger bun, it will be able to hold the accessory without destroying the updo.
You’re finished! These curly updos should take about ten minutes to create, and you can be ready and on your way in no time!

Simply Tousled & Twisted
It’s easy to create pretty curly updos thanks to a simple ponytail with a romantic twist. To accomplish the look, you’ll need a mousse, pomade, finishing mist for shine, hairspray and about five bobby pins, maybe more depending on the texture of your hair. The thicker your hair is, the more bobby pins you’ll need!
- Begin with freshly shampooed hair. Towel dry hair with a mircofiber towel and then turn your head upside down and scrunch in your mousse. Let hair air dry or, if you are in a rush, diffuse on the coolest setting.
- Place a dime sized dollop of pomade in the palm of your hand, rub palms together, then smooth hair back into a ponytail. Holding the pony tight at the scalp with one hand, run your other hand over the ponytail all the way to the ends. Pomade helps to soften, open and define your curls, but won’t flatten them out.
- Divide hair into two sections with a center part in the back of the head (as if you were creating pigtails”>. Take one side and twist it under to the side, securing with a bobby pin or two — whatever holds it in place. Then twist the other section also under and to the opposite side. Secure it with bobby pins as well. You are crisscrossing the two sections to create a unique, loose tumble of curls that is simple, but elegant.
- Smooth tendrils, add bobby pins if necessary, or dress up this look with a stunning hair comb, like this crystal and pearl combo. If your tendrils need definition, a hot curling iron covered with a light cotton fabric will do the trick. Finish off with a shine spray and hairspray.

Get That Je Ne Sais Quoi Chignon
All you’ll need for this look is about five bobby pins, depending on the thickness of your hair — you may need more, pomade, shine spray and hairspray. Quick, simple, timeless — that’s the look you’re going for!
- Apply a small amount of pomade to your palm, rub your palms together and then begin by gathering the hair into a low side ponytail at the base of your hairline. This will help to keep frizz and flyaways at bay without making your hair look greasy or dirty.
- Twist about half of the ponytail keeping the ends free from the twist. Then, wrap the twist pony section onto itself, around the base of the ponytail forming a bun. Secure with bobby pins.
- Continue to secure the bun by inserting bobby pins around the base until the bun is anchored in place. Add as many is necessary to completely secure it. As a rule of thumb, the thicker your hair, the more bobby pins you will need.
- For a messier look, leave the untwisted ends out. For a more polished look, tuck the untwisted ends in to the middle of the bun, creating a fountain look. Add additional bobby pins to keep the fountain in place.
- Apply a shine spray and secure the entire look with hairspray, to ensure that it stays in place.

The holiday party season is here. Your soiree schedule is set. Before you know it, you’ll be reconnecting with colleagues, spreading holiday cheer with friends, and maybe even stealing a few mistletoe kisses — wink, wink. But not at the company party, of course!
MORE: Wavy Holiday Updos or Kinky Holiday Updos
The company holiday party can be fun and festive, but you always want to remember that it’s still a professional function. The goal is to strike a balance between formal and casual curly updos. Have fun, but don’t go haywire. Show a different side of yourself, but not too different. Argh! The etiquette rules may wear on your nerves, but your party look doesn’t have to.
Go for Side-Swepted Spirals
- First, style your curls as usual, setting them with your favorite products and creating a strong part. If you normally aim for the center, try a side part — or vice versa. “You want to look different from how your work colleagues normally see you, without going overboard,” says Rodney Cutler of New York’s Cutler Salon.
- Sweep one side back with two or three decorative bobby pins. You can roll your curls back in one or two sections to make it a little more formal, or loosely sweep your textured tresses back to one side for a more relaxed, but still-stylish look. The glitzy bobby pins add a seasonal effect, so don’t be afraid to show them — they’re part of this curly updo.
- Pull a few strands out around your hairline to frame your face. If needed, re-wet the loose pieces and using your finger, curl them in place. Blasting the strands with a bit of heat while wrapped around your finger will help them to set. The loose strands should be frizz-free and well-defined.
- Finish the look off with a light mist of hairspray to keep the curls in place and a shine spray to make sure that the holiday lights shine off your mane.

Go for a Tastefully Tousled Knot
The clock is counting down and you are way dressed up and ready to greet the new year with hope, happiness and excitement. But what to do with the hair?
Rodney Cutler of New York’s Cutler Salon suggests a twist on the half-up-half-down updo.
- First, loosely gather a group of curls from both sides, away from the face, and pull them back into a ponytail. As you wrap the elastic band around your hair, do not pull the last bit through. Let it rest in a loop rather than creating the entire ponytail.
- Be sure you leave enough hair not pulled through the elastic to wrap around your ponytail. Keep in mind that if you have shorter hair, this means your knot will be much shorter, whereas if you have longer hair, the knot will look more like the photo.
- Wrap the ends of your hair that have not been pulled through the ponytail around the elastic band so that they hide it, and secure them with bobby pins. Don’t worry too much about the stray strands that pop back up or fan out — these can create a unique and fun look. However, if you want to keep those pieces down, be sure to use a heavy creme or butter, like shea butter, to keep the curls in place.
- Finally secure the entire knot with a decorative accessory, such as a sparkling gemstone brooch or barrette. “The accessories play up the elegance and the festive season,” Cutler says. “But you don’t want to look like a Christmas tree and you don’t want [the style] to look contrived. So don’t pull your curls too tightly, and the knot doesn’t have to be symmetrical.”

Get a Glittery & Beguiling BunFor a fun, wintery night on the town with your favorite gals, stylist Rodney Cutler suggests a disheveled bun with a glimmering holiday twist!
- First, gently pull your hair back into a ponytail, but “don’t make it perfect — keep the curly texture and movement,” Cutler says.
- Next, head to your local art and crafts store for a small container of glitter (try red or green for a seasonal theme — gold or silver for extra shimmer”> and simply toss it inside the ponytail and sprinkle it on the top layer of your curls. “When the light hits your curls, the glitter will create a reflection and sparkle,” Cutler says, “and that will give the look a really festive feel.”
- Then, twist the ponytail into a messy bun and secure it with pins. If you have thicker hair, be sure to use two bobby pins and cross them in an X formation for the strongest possible hold.
- As the night wears on, you can always release the bun to let your hair down and the glitter fly — yet another way to make your holidays sparkle!
