Curly Beginner’s Guide: Swimming With Curly Hair

Good news, curly girls! It’s safe to go back in the water. That is, once you accept your hair’s natural texture!

If you’ve ever been a blow-dry/flat-iron-straight girl, you know that swimming is off the agenda. If you go in the water, your straight hair reveals its natural shape, and even being near the water – like at the beach or at a steamy indoor pool – can ruin a blow-out in no time flat.

Once you go curly, however, you can enjoy the water like never before. Just follow these simple tips and you’ll be good to go!

1. Chlorine is Good for Pools But Can Be Very Drying For Curls

Curly Beginner’s Guide: Swimming With Curly Hair

Chlorine isn’t good for any hair type, but it’s even worse for curly hair because curls are naturally drier than straight or wavy tresses. Before going in the pool, slather your hair (wet or dry) with a rich conditioner. Curly hair is porous, and the conditioner fills those holes before the chlorine can seep in.

Next, slip on a bathing cap. Besides being protective, you’ll also be giving yourself a deep moisturizing treatment thanks to the heat generated by the cap and the conditioner. Not only will you have hydrated curls, but frizz will disappear, too!

2. Use Products From Your Kitchen!

Apply extra virgin olive oil to your hands and then slick it on your hair downward. You can also put the oil in a spray bottle and spritz it on your curls. “Because oil and water don’t mix, the oil will repel the chlorinated water,” explains Lorraine Massey, author of “Curly Girl: The Handbook.”

3. At tThe Beach, Salt Water Can Dehydrate Your Curls, As Can the Salty Ocean Air

Curly Beginner’s Guide: Swimming With Curly Hair

If you don’t want to don a bathing cap and conditioner, then at least spritz hair with a leave-in conditioner often or combine equal parts conditioner and water in a spray bottle to create your own.

5. Don’t Forget Post-Swim Care

Curly Beginner’s Guide: Swimming With Curly Hair

It’s important to wash your hair IMMEDIATELY with a sulfate-free cleanser or conditioner to remove any drying chlorine or salt water.

Follow these tips, and you and your curls will be basking in the sun and water all summer long!

5 Ways to Sleep Without Ruining Your Curls

Everyone talks about catching up on beauty sleep, but it can be hard to follow through. When we get a solid night of rest, we often wake up with a messy curls. With so many activities competing for valuable morning time (e.g., breakfast, getting dressed, Instagram, etc.), caring for our hair sometimes gets overlooked.

The flat iron is damaging. Washing takes too long. A brush is not an option for textured hair. So what’s a curly-haired girl to do? I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be this way. You can go to bed and wake up with fabulous hair.

Read on for the top five tips to help you transition from waking up frustrated with your ‘do to waking up with a nearly ready-to-go look.

    Pineapple

The go-to overnight curl protector is the pineapple. To pineapple means to loosely tie your curls into a ponytail atop the crown of your head with a scrunchie or headband, depending on how thick your hair is. It should look like a pineapple, get it? This style protects your curls from being squashed while you toss and turn in a deep slumber. And since this ‘do lifts the hair’s roots, you’ll wake up with plenty of volume.

Simply pull your hair through a scrunchie, but don’t double-wrap it. Tying too tightly can create a crease in the curls. For extra protection, you can tie a silk or satin scarf around your head to keep your hair from rubbing on your pillow.

    Satin Bonnet

Can’t keep split ends at bay? Wear a satin bonnet to protect your ends from the friction of your pajamas and your bedding. It may not be the sexiest thing to wear to bed, but at least you can avoid scheduling a trim every other month. Speaking of beauty sleep, if you suspect that bacteria from your curls is causing acne on your face or back, a satin bonnet will prevent excess sebum, debris, and hair products from clogging your pores when your hair rubs against your face and shoulders while you sleep.

Are bonnets not your style? Well, the hooded scarves from Ebonicurls are designed to be worn to sleep and with your casual wear!

    Satin Pillowcase

Cotton pillowcases absorb the moisture from your hair, leaving your curls dry, frizzy, and undefined. A satin pillowcase will allow you to sleep with your hair loose without parched or frizzy strands greeting you first thing in the morning. This is another great option for women who aren’t crazy about donning a hair bonnet. If you don’t mind sleeping with your hair loose, a satin pillowcase is a quick fix that won’t require additional steps to your night or morning hair routine.

    French Braid

If you love the curling wand but hate the damage it causes, try sleeping with one, two, or three French braids! This style creates body waves while protecting your hair from rubbing against your clothes and sheets, resulting in dryness and breakage. All you have to do is set your hair with a little hairspray (we like Curlsmith’s Flawless Finish Flexible Hold) and then braid before bed. Simply release your braids in the morning and go! Minimal fuss the night before and no fuss the next morning.

    Two-Strand Twist

If you don’t know how to braid, a two-strand twist is about as simple as it gets. Simply take a small section of hair, divide it into two, and twist the two pieces around each other from roots to ends. This technique works best for tighter curl patterns. Two-strand twists can be done on either wet or dry hair. Apply your favorite styler or sealing product if your hair is wet before you twist. If your hair is dry, spray a light mist of water or a refresher spray before you twist. Avoid using too much product as it can lead to buildup.

The key to waking up with bouncy, ready-to-go morning hair is all in the prep. As you scramble to get out the door to work, the only thing you’ll need to do is lightly fluff your hair and apply a refresher spray, such as Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Curl Refresher Spray for Curls, Coils and Waves, with Agave.

Find a nightly routine that suits your lifestyle to preserve your curls throughout the week. As an added benefit, you won’t have to wash and restyle your hair as often, which can strip your hair and cause breakage. Say goodbye to split ends, frizz, and leaving the house with wet hair. Say hello to moisturized, dry, and healthy hair, ready to walk out the door.

How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel

When it comes to packing for a flight, those of us with curly hair are faced with the dilemma of downsizing our multiple-product regimens. While it may seem like a daunting task, following TSA regulations when packing for flights can allow for a simplified packing list, and more room for clothes and souvenirs!

These are our top tips for air travel beauty.

How to pack for air travel

    1. Zip Top Bags

How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel

TSA suggests that you prepare for packing by placing all liquids in a clear bag with a zip top. This could be something as simple and cheap as a large Ziploc bag, or you can easily find TSA-approved bags made of sturdier plastic for under $10.00. These bags will prevent spills and can be quickly wiped down if necessary.

    2. Travel Kits

How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel

Many hair product travel kits are designed perfectly for curlies! The Rizos Curls travel kit offers a shampoo, conditioner, curl cream, and their popular Refresh spray line. It even comes in a TSA-friendly clear zip top bag!

DevaCurl offers a great set that includes a conditioning cleanser, a conditioner, a defining gel, and a styling cream.

The Uncle Funky’s Daughter set includes five more “snack-size” products for kinkier textures: a conditioner, a leave-in spray, supercurl, extra butter, curl stimulator, and refresh spray. This kit also comes in a clear zip-top bag.

    3. Solid shampoo

How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel

Opt for a solid shampoo to simplify your packing further and completely bypass liquid regulations!

For type 3 and 4 hair, the NaturallyCurly editors recommend As I Am and Pure Rootss! Both are ultra-convenient, ultra-moisturizing options!

    4. Travel bottles

How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel

If there is not a travel-sized option to be found for your must-have products, it is very easy to find TSA-approved bottles that you can fill with liquids, creams, and sprays.

    5. Travel-Sized Tools

How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel

Arm yourself with travel-sized hair tools! The Pattern Travel-sized Brush is perfect for detangling.

    6. Mini Styling Set

How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel

Pack along a mini hair styling set, such as the Curlsmith Defrizzion Dryer, comes with a travel bag, back stand, diffuser, and comb attachment.

You could also bring the lightweight Shark XSKHD4DA FlexStyle Curl-Defining Diffuser instead, which you can easily fit over a hair dryer at a hotel or friend’s house to create a diffusing effect.

    7. International Adapters

How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel

Traveling internationally? Prepare with an international travel adapter plug, so you can still use your favorite styling tools! The universal travel power adapter includes four different plugs that nest together into a small, single unit to make sure you have portable power wherever you go.

    8. Hair Gloves

How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel

If you wish to avoid heat styling altogether, make sure to bring a hair glove to scrunch your curls and speed up the natural drying process! You don’t want to use rough hotel towels on your hair, so Curl Keepr offers quick drying globes, an anti-frizz hair drying glove perfect to avoid breakage and keep your hair smooth.

Where are you traveling to this season, and what curly products will you be taking along? Safe travels to all!

5 Bonding Activities for Curly Mommy & Daughter

Tara Lisciandro-Hornich is a Type 2/3 curly mom and healthy lifestyle advocate.

The nature of the child is amazing. Taking moments to be with your child and spend quality, wholesome time together can change your outlook on parenting and simple day-to-day tasks. Below are a few ideas and activities you can share with your daughter. Remember, they can all be enjoyed together as long as you are mindful as you do them.

5 Bonding Activities for Curly Mommy & Daughter

Being mindful is simple but not always easy. Simply put, mindfulness means staying in the present moment, being aware of what is taking place with all of your senses, and passing no judgment as you do so. Being mindful while playing and being with your child may just turn playtime, storytime, and “girl” time into something a little more if you practice.

Curly Mom & Daughter Bonding Activities

    1. Beauty/Spa Day!

Taking your toddler or little one to a spa doesn’t have to be expensive…Shop a local drugstore together to pick out a fun, new nail polish color, loofah, and bath soap or bubbles. At home, fill a tub with your new bubbles, teach your daughter how to use a loofah, and soak in the beautiful scents of lavender, citrus, or berries. Follow up a perfect bath with a mani/pedi for the both of you – at home. If your daughter is old enough, allow her to paint your toes or hands, too!

    2. Tea and Books

5 Bonding Activities for Curly Mommy & Daughter

It’s never too early to introduce fine teas to children. Look for teas with little to zero caffeine. There are a variety of peach and white teas that may appeal to your daughter; try them out. Then, find a comfy place at home where the two of you can curl up with a blanket, your teas, and a good book. Make it a ritual.

    3. Kitchen Time

Take out grandma’s old recipe cards or a favorite cookbook and begin to teach your daughter how to make a family culinary tradition. Don’t have one? Start your own and create your cookbook with your daughter!

    4. The Art of the Garden

Find a little place in your yard to start a small garden, or if you’re limited in space, start a container garden. Pick a few plants, like lavender, that you can plant, grow and use. Some plants, like lavender, can be dried and used for other projects. Having time spent outdoors together and creating something for the family is an amazing way to bond and share quality time.

    5. Turn Your Home Into a Salon!

Browse your favorite health and beauty stores with your daughter and take home a few favorite or new shampoos, conditioners, gels, or items to make your products. Once home, have your daughter play the stylist’s part and allow her to apply products to your hair and style it. If she’s too young, moms can play the stylist.

After washing and conditioning, play up your daughter’s hair with something new and different. Try an updo or pigtails, braids, or play with hair bands and clips, things she doesn’t normally wear. Finish off your salon time by taking photos of the two of you to capture and remember the fun!

Should I Comb my Hair in the Shower?

A thorough hair care routine can seem exhausting in a hurry. With so many of us running short on time and trying to find ways to multitask, performing two tasks at once may seem like a good idea.

Should I Comb my Hair in the Shower?

However, there are often unintended consequences, such as how you might think you are saving time by brushing your teeth in the shower but also introducing new bacteria into your mouth. Brushing your hair in the shower to save time and work through tangles is a similar scenario.

While combing your hair in the shower may seem easier, it doesn’t mean it is a good idea. There are pros and cons to detangling both wet and dry hair; it depends on your hair type and condition and which one will work best for you.

Here are a few considerations to remember when combing in the shower.

    Hair is more vulnerable

Hair is more vulnerable when it is wet. Damaged, fragile, or compromised hair becomes even more prone to breakage when wet. Even relatively healthy hair can be damaged by combing it in the shower. Combing through tangles in the shower can lead to more hair shed than what is considered normal or healthy.

    Hair tangles more easily

Part of the problem with combing your hair in the shower is that wet hair tangles more easily than dry or damp hair. This is a double whammy because while you may think brushing in the shower is getting knots out easier, it is actually contributing to more hair loss. Essentially, you are creating additional tangles.

    Hair clogs your shower drain

    @itsbarbiedelle

No because I’m standing in 3inches of water by the end of my shower because my coarse af hair is constantly clogging the drain #curlygirls #curls #curlyhair

    ♬ Rose – James Horner

When you wash your hair, you may naturally lose a few strands. Comb your hair in the shower, and you look at twice the lost strands. Where do those strands usually end up? Your shower drain is creating clogs and costly plumbing issues.

How to Detangle in the Shower

Despite this, many curlies do find that their hair benefits from the slip of detangling hair when it is wet. If you prefer to detangle in the shower, here are a few tips to help save your strands. Note that these will not fully protect your hair from the damage caused by wet brushing.

    1. Use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers
Should I Comb my Hair in the Shower?

Your fingers are the gentlest detangling tool, but a wide-tooth comb is the next best option if you want to save time. These can help work through tangles and eliminate some of the strand breakage.

    2. Do not comb hair while under running water

This will add to your tangles and breakage. Instead, turn off the faucet while you thoroughly detangle.

    3. Apply conditioner first

To help your fingers or wide-tooth comb slide through knots or tangles, generously apply conditioner to your strands first. Be sure to purchase a conditioner that provides plenty of slip.

    Stop Making These Tangle-Causing Mistakes

Discovering that your hair is tangled shortly after washday is disappointing. Especially when your curl friends do not really face the same challenge with their curls.

“How does my hair tangle so quickly?” you may wonder.

Luckily, this article will share the most common causes of tangled curls and how to avoid tearing your hair out.

    1. Not using the right Deep-Conditioner

    Stop Making These Tangle-Causing Mistakes

Knowing the porosity of your hair is key when purchasing a deep conditioner. Many curlies base their purchase decision on reviews of a popular blogger, who may have a different hair porosity. A suitable deep conditioner will restore the condition of the cuticle and improve its ability to absorb and restore moisture.

For instance, people with low-porosity hair should avoid using protein-deep conditioners. On the other hand, people with high-porosity hair need protein to restore the damaged cuticles.

    2. Not detangling your hair correctly

There are many ways of detangling curls incorrectly. For instance, some people mostly detangle the ends of their hair but fail to detangle the roots thoroughly. As a result, they often have tangles in their roots. Others do not section their hair before detangling. Consequently, it is easy to overlook areas to detangle. When detangling incorrectly, your strands will get cluttered with other strands. As a result, there will be knots in the hair.

    Stop Making These Tangle-Causing Mistakes

Before detangling your hair, you should divide it into sections. Start at the ends and carefully detangle up to the roots. You have detangled your hair correctly if you can smoothly run the comb from the roots to the ends.

    3. Postponing wash days

    Stop Making These Tangle-Causing Mistakes

Many curlies prefer to make the washday results last as long as possible. However, your hair really needs moisture. Without moisture, your hair will be brittle and rough, and your strands will get tangled. To prevent this, schedule a wash in the morning, afternoon, or evening during the week.

    4. Product build-up

    https://www.tiktok.com/@yourmanewitch/video/7269807329867156782?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7319876376193680927

LOC or LCO are curly hair methods that many curly hair gurus often recommend. Unfortunately, these curly hair care methods are unsuitable for every hair porosity. For instance, applying too many products on low-porosity hair will cause product build-up. As a result, the hair will get tangled easily. Are you curious which products would match your curly hair needs?

    5. The wrong nighttime routine

    Stop Making These Tangle-Causing Mistakes

Hair tangling can be caused by friction between the hair cuticles as they move and rub against each other. This friction occurs when your head moves during sleep. Braids, a pineapple bun, and wearing a satin scarf or bonnet are ways to prevent hair from tangling.

    6. You do not trim your hair consistently

    @itsbarbiedelle

Replying to @claire mackenzie Curly haircut “shock” is real! That doesnt mean the haircut was bad, your curls just arent used to sitting with less weight to them. Usually it takes 2-4 curly wash days to have them go back to normal. #curlyhaircut #haircutshock #curlcut #curlstylist #curls #beautytips

    ♬ american boy – ༺ 00s throwbacks ༻

It may be tempting to avoid a visit to the hairdresser, but trimming your curls prevents your strands from tangling. Split ends will friction with other ends. As a result, you will have tangles and fairy knots. Visit the hairdresser every three months to prevent this from happening.

    7. You should try low-manipulation styling

    Stop Making These Tangle-Causing Mistakes

Wash and go may be perceived as a never-ending battle, especially when the washday results last less than two days. If you want to give yourself a break, you should try low-manipulation stylings, such as flexi-rods, roller sets, banding, curl formers, and heatless blowouts. To achieve excellent results, you will have to detangle every strand carefully.

Low manipulation hair styling will not require lots of effort the days after washdays. Besides, you will be tempted to follow most good habits. For instance, you should encourage yourself to detangle your hair correctly to achieve beautiful results. Not to forget, as it took quite some effort to achieve excellent results, you will follow the right nighttime routine to ensure you will continue having good hair days.

    8. Your clothing causes friction

Wearing a scarf, jacket, or top with a high collar can be warm, fashionable, and comfortable; however, if you are not wearing a silk scarf, the moisture will be absorbed by the garment’s material, causing hair to tangle. Try not to wear your hair down when rocking a scarf or clothing that will rub on your hair.
