Here’s How to Transition Your Hair Regimen For Spring

I love the smell of spring.  From the flowers blooming and sunlight  beaming, spring is one of my favorite seasons! With each seasonal change, your hair regimen should also change. Now is a good time to take inventory of your healthy hair regimen and start transitioning it for the spring weather. With the increasing temperatures, what worked in the winter may not work for the spring. Let’s look at some products to help your transition be defined and smooth as your curls.

Products

The same products that you use in the winter months probably will change. For me I don’t like to use any heavy butters or oils in the spring months. Heavy butters and oils were great for helping to seal in the moisture in the winter, but for spring opt for lighter creams and oils like grapeseed oil and almond oil. I also love to use gels for styling during this time because it really helps to minimize frizz. I like using CURLS Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Jelly.

Deep Condition

You may also find that you don’t need to deep condition your hair as often as you did during the colder months. I deep condition weekly in the winter, but in the spring I often change my deep conditioning sessions to bi-weekly. This is because I find that I don’t need as much moisture as I do in the colder months so I can spread them out. I still deep condition for up to 30 minutes with steam. My deep conditioners of choice are TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask and Mielle Organics Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioner.

Pre-Poo

This is a step that I also find that I don’t need to do as much in the warmer months. In the winter, pre-pooing is great for helping your hair to retain moisture because of the colder temperatures. In the spring, if I do pre-poo my hair it’s not for as long as I do in the winter months, which is about an hour or so. In the spring, I can pre-poo my hair 15-30 minutes before washing and achieve great results. I also opt for pre-pooing with just a rinse out conditioner alone versus mixing an oil with the conditioner.

Shampoo

If you co-wash more during the winter you may switch up your regimen to shampooing your hair more in the spring. I shampoo my hair weekly. In the warmer months, it’s crucial for me to use shampoo instead of co-washing because I sweat a lot, which causes more buildup on my scalp. Co-washing just does not do it for me when it comes to removing product buildup like a good sulfate-free shampoo does. My favorite shampoo to use is Design Essentials Avocado and Almond Sulfate Free Shampoo.

Style

Styling my hair in the warmer months can be a bit of a hassle sometimes. My twist outs and braid outs don’t last nearly as long in the warmer weather because my hair swells due to the humidity. I love it though because I love big hair, but the definition in my styles doesn’t last like it does in the winter. I like to wear my hair in high buns and also in protective styles.

You don’t have to completely overhaul your regimen each season, you may need to make a few product changes and that’s it. Transitioning your regimen for spring doesn’t have to be a daunting process. Don’t make it difficult on yourself. Continue to follow your regimen and tweak a few things if you need to.

My Favorite Black-Owned Brands in My Regimen
My Favorite Black-Owned Brands in My Regimen

Black History Month is upon us and it’s time to celebrate our journey and the pioneers who helped us get to where we are today. There are many black-owned brands in the beauty and hair industries that are creating a space for multicultural consumers. Here are some of my favorite black-owned hair care brands.

Mielle Organics

Mielle has been on the beauty scene since 2014. Founded by Monique Rodriguez, Mielle has taken the beauty industry by storm in a short amount of time. Mielle Organics offers all natural ingredients in their products. Mielle is known for their results-driven products and also for their excellent customer service. My favorites products include the Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner and the Mint Almond oil.

CURLS

CURLS has been on the beauty scene since 2002, founded by Mahisha Dellinger. CURLS is a leader in the natural hair care and beauty space. CURLS continues to develop amazing products with their unique formulation of certified organic ingredients. CURLS continues to increase awareness among multi-ethnic consumers around the world. My favorite products include the Blueberry Bliss Twist-N- Shout Cream and the Blueberry Bliss Reparative Leave-in Conditioner.

EDEN BodyWorks

EDEN BodyWorks is one of my all time favorite Black-owned beauty brands. EDEN BodyWorks was founded by Jasmine Lawrence when she was 11 years old. As a child, Jasmine faced many beauty challenges and was unable to find natural products for her hair, so she created her own. My favorite products are the Coconut Shea Leave-in conditioner, and the Coconut Shea Curl Defining Creme.

TGIN

TGIN- Thank God It’s Natural was founded by Chris-Tia Donaldson. Thank God It’s Natural is a line of natural products for hair and skin, and are available nationwide in many big brand stores. I have been a fan of TGIN since the beginning and the owner is from my hometown of Chicago, IL. Chris-Tia created TGIN because she felt that there were very few products in the hair industry that were designed for women with kinky, curly and wavy textures. My favorite products are the Honey Miracle Hair Mask and the Twist and Define Creme.

Jane Carter Solution

I have been using Jane Carter since the very beginning of my natural hair journey. Jane Carter is definitely not new to the beauty industry. Jane Carter has been a hairstylist since 1982 and began making products in 1992. Jane Carter Solution was founded due to an allergic reaction that was caused by prolonged exposure to chemicals found in traditional hair care products. My favorite products are the Nourish and Shine and the Revitalizing Leave- In Conditioner.

5 Heatless Methods to Add Volume to Natural Hair
5 Heatless Methods to Add Volume to Natural Hair

Image:@AHFRO_BAANG

The summertime is approaching, so that means that curly girls are beginning to search for cute hairstyles for the fun summer activities. In the summer you probably want to go for styles that don’t require heat. Curly girls love volume, and there are many hairstyles that you can achieve without putting heat on your hair. Let’s check out a few hairstyles that you can achieve volume without heat.

Twist Outs

I love a good twist out. It is probably my favorite style to do. The key to a good voluminous twist out is separating the hair and picking out the roots. You can opt for a flat twist out or also individual twists, whichever you prefer. When you separate your twists, make sure that your hair is completely dry or else it will be a major fail. Also, make sure to apply oil to your hands when untwisting to help keep the frizz at bay. Then pick out those roots! Make sure you don’t pick too much to cause frizz though, just pick at the roots and lift your hair up and you will create a volume filled twist out.

Flexi Rods

Flexi Rod sets are probably one of my second favorite hairstyles to wear. The secret to achieving a full and volume filled Flexi rod set is all about the technique. I like to roll my hair down the rod like a wand curl set. You also want to make sure your hair is completely dry before removing the rods. You also want to make sure to add oil to your hands when separating the set.

Bantu Knots

Bantu Knots are one of the most beautiful hairstyles. Honestly, every time I do them they are always a fail, but so many curly girls rock this hairstyle effortlessly. As with any hairstyle, this style turns out best when your hair is dry. Pick the roots of your Bantu knot set to achieve a big and voluminous hairstyle that will turn heads.

Braid Outs

Braid outs used to be one of my go-to hairstyles during my transition. They are so easy to do plus they look great on anyone who wears this hairstyle. A braid out is a good way to achieve volume. During my transition, I would braid my hair in multiple braids and then place perm rods at the ends for an added curl. Again picking out the roots of your braid out will give you ultimate volume.

Finger Coils

Finger coils is a style that I haven’t tried, but it is so beautiful on curly girls. I think I will try this style out soon and there is no better time than the upcoming warmer months. Separating and fluffing your finger coil set will help you with volume. This style does not take much to achieve a great volume. Check this style out on your next wash day.

This is How to Keep Your Hair Moisturized This Winter

Wintertime is the time where you should really love on your hair. It is important to pay attention to our hair and make sure that it is ready to combat the cold weather. In my book, the changing seasons mean that it’s time to switch up my hair regimen. The main focus of the season is moisture, because the cold air can be drying to our natural hair, and this is not good when trying to maintain healthy hair. Here are some tips on how to keep your hair moisturized this winter.

Use a co-wash

If you are ready to give the shampoos a rest, try co-washing or using a cleansing conditioner. By adding a co-wash to your regimen this winter, you can help combat dryness. A co-wash is milder than shampoo and it provides conditioning properties. Try one out in between your wash sessions. I recommend EDENBodyworks Coconut Shea Cleansing Cowash.

Deep condition often

For naturals who don’t deep condition often, now is the time to plan ahead to deep condition at least once a week. Deep conditioning really helps combat dry hair. I actually love deep conditioning and I am somewhat obsessed. If you really want to get the best out of your deep conditioning session, deep condition with heat or steam. Thank me later.

Pre-poo your hair

I love to pre-poo my hair during the winter. Doing a pre-poo treatment can really help with your washing process. During the winter months it is really important, because if you pre-poo it can lessen moisture loss before the shampoo process. To pre-poo, just apply your favorite oil, leave it on for about 15 minutes, and then wash it out when you begin to wash your hair. This will help prevent moisture depletion until the next wash day.

Steam your hair

If you are not already doing this, shame on you. I have had a steamer for as long as I can remember and it is my favorite hair tool. Steaming your hair helps to add moisture and elasticity to the hair, which is especially needed during winter. If you do not have a steamer, you can create a DIY steamer by using plastic caps and sitting under a hooded dryer for 15 minutes.

Keep your hair protected

I know this may be a no-brainer, but keeping your hair protected in the cold is vital. Consider wearing hats with a satin lining to prevent dryness, and always protect your hair at night, so that your cotton sheets do not absorb the moisture and oils from your hair. I know it can be easy to forget when you’re drowsy, but it’s important.

Avoid heat

At all costs avoid heat styling in the winter. I know that your blowout will last longer in the winter because you are less likely to sweat it out, but you don’t want the dry air to suck out the little moisture you have. Instead of using heat, try protective styling and different roller sets like perm rods, flexi-rods, and Curlformers.

What are you doing to keep your hair moisturized this fall and winter?

4 Things I Never Use On My Child’s Hair
4 Things I Never Use On My Childs Hair

Caring for your child’s natural hair can be a journey. You spend so much time learning about your own natural hair, what products and styles work for you, and now you have to do the same for your child’s hair. Believe me I know the struggle is real, but it’s totally necessary when caring for your child’s hair. My overall goal for my daughter’s hair is to use products that are not harsh and make sure that I practice low-manipulation styling. I focus on the heath of her hair over anything else.

I began really focusing on the styling of my daughter’s natural hair when she was about 18 months old. Before then, there was not really much to do to her hair. I didn’t use many products before then. Her routine was simple, which included washing with a mild baby shampoo and applying a little oil to her hair afterwards. I brushed it with a soft brush and that was it. She is 2 years old now and I have developed a regimen that incorporates products. I always get tons of questions about what I use on my daughter’s hair, but it’s equally important to know what I avoid.

$$AD$$

Products with harsh ingredients

I use the entire EDENBodyworks Kids line on her hair. None of their products contain harsh ingredients. I don’t use any shampoos with sulfates that are drying to textured hair. EDENBodywork products work well for her hair, as her hair continues to retain length and maintain its health.

Certain hair accessories

I am not a fan of using a lot of hair accessories on my daughter’s hair. I only like to use headbands and ouch-less bands for her ponytails. I never like to put any barrettes or objects on the ends of her hair. Accessories can cause breakage to children’s hair and should be avoided if possible, especially along her edges. I try to keep it simple and cute.

$$AD$$

Harsh gels

I prefer not to use gels with extreme hold on my child’s hair. I feel that gels with an extreme hold are too harsh for her hair and will make it very hard. To hold her styles in place I use EDENBodyworks Coco Shea Berry Natural Smoothing Gel. It doesn’t have harsh ingredients like some of the holding gels on the market for adults, and it gives her styles a smooth finish.

Heat

I do not use any heat on my daughter’s hair. I also don’t use a blow-dryer or any tools that require heat. She is only 2 years old and I don’t think I will be using heat any time soon. I want to avoid heat damage. Heat is not on my radar for the styling of her hair at this stage.

What’s the Difference Between Protein Deep Conditioners & Moisturizing Deep Conditioners
Whats the Difference Between Protein Deep Conditioners & Moisturizing Deep Conditioners

One thing I’ve learned from years of experimenting with my hair is that your deep conditioner should always remain in your regimen. I am big on deep conditioning and I feel that it is definitely essential in any season. Let’s take a look at the two types of deep conditioners, protein deep conditioners and moisturizing deep conditioners and which one may be right for you.

$$AD$$

Why do you need to deep condition?

Several naturals have told me that they don’t deep condition often and I give them a blank stare. Girl you need to be deep conditioning your hair on a regular basis! Deep conditioning is a very important step in your natural hair regimen and should not be overlooked or rushed through. Deep conditioning helps to moisturize and strengthen your hair, protecting it from breakage and everyday styling. If you are a natural who has color-treated hair or any type of damage, then you definitely want to learn about deep conditioning your hair on a regular basis.

$$AD$$ Whats the Difference Between Protein Deep Conditioners & Moisturizing Deep Conditioners

What is a protein deep conditioner?

Protein deep conditioners are used to infuse our hair with hydrolyzed protein and sometimes ceramides. If you have color-treated hair or show signs of dry brittle hair, then you need to try a protein deep conditioner. Protein deep conditioners are also referred to as treatments because they help strengthen weak strands and increase the elasticity of our natural hair and appearance of your hair. Protein deep conditioners should only be done once every 2-4 months. I like to use Mielle Organics Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner when I need to use a protein deep conditioner on my hair.

Whats the Difference Between Protein Deep Conditioners & Moisturizing Deep Conditioners

What is a moisturizing deep conditioner?

Moisturizing deep conditioners are used to help attract condition and moisture to our hair. Moisturizing deep conditioners will contain water as a first ingredient. My favorite is TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask. I use a moisturizing deep conditioner every week, paired with my steamer. I can tell you that I have noticed a major difference in the moisture of my hair by using a steamer. Nadling Pollard, master stylist at Salon Pressure in Chicago, says, “Deep conditioners are an awesome tool for replenishing or rebuilding the hair. Moisture masks are useful in the colder and dryer seasons of the year. Some people have (a hard time moisturizing”> hair, so these conditioners tend to be heavier and very useful.”

You should really take a look at your regimen and the state of your hair before deciding which deep conditioner is right for you. I deep condition with a moisturizing deep conditioner at least once a week. I only deep condition with a protein deep conditioner every few months, because it is not needed as often. It is important to choose a protein treatment depending on the state of your hair health. Here’s our full guide to choosing the best protein treatment for you.

My Top 3 Heat Protectants to Prevent Heat Damage
“heat

Thinking about giving the curls a break and getting your hair straightened for the holidays? If you are like me, then you are probably bored with your hair and you are ready to switch it up just in time for the cooler weather. I am so happy because cooler weather means that those straight styles, wand curls, and blow-outs will last longer, and I am so here for it! Don’t get too excited and lose sight of protecting your hair though. When using any time of heat on your natural hair, it’s very important to use a heat protectant.

Why it is important to use a heat protectant

Most heat protectants contain silicones to help create a barrier between the cuticle layer of your hair and heat. Silicones are also known to be able to withstand high temperatures. Heat protectants are great emollients that smooth and soften the hair. For this reason, it is best to add a heat protectant to your hair while it is still wet, so that it binds well with the water in your hair. Here are a few of my favorite heat protectants.

Jane Carter Solution Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner

I absolutely love this product. This was actually the first heat protectant that I found out about when I first went natural. This leave-in conditioner doubles as a heat protectant for your hair. It seals in panthenol and humectants to keep your hair moisturized. Most importantly it acts as a protective barrier against heat styling and also sun damage!

Cantu Thermal Shield Heat Protectant

I have been using the Cantu brand for a while and it will always remain a staple of mine. When I found out they had a heat protectant I was very eager to try. I love this heat protectant, because it is very lightweight, shields hair from heat up to 425, and reduces frizz and flyaways. It is also infused with shea butter to soften the hair.

SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Styling Lotion

This lotion also doubles and a bomb heat protectant. I love this entire line by SheaMoisture, because it  strengthens your hair, and this heat protectant is no different. It protects your hair while also restoring moisture. It is an excellent choice for those curlies who like to straighten their hair frequently. It is made with Jamaican black castor oil, organic shea butter, and peppermint to help protect our curls against heat damage.

So the next time you plan to apply heat to your hair, check out one of these heat protectants. You won’t be disappointed and your hair will thank you!

4 Ways to Trim Your Own Hair

Image: Getty

Trimming your own hair is something that I have done, and something that has probably crossed your mind a few times. If you are not confident, and fear making a mistake, then you should not trim your own natural hair. You should definitely consult with a stylist to get a trim. No one wants split ends that make your hair look dry and damaged. Don’t hang onto damaged hair; it’s best to cut it off so you can continue on your heathy hair journey.

I think you should get a trim every eight weeks. Some naturals go longer and only trim their hair every twelve weeks or more. Ultimately, you should trim your hair when your ends warrant it.

Sometimes you don’t have the money to go to your hairstylist, and you feel confident enough that you can do it yourself at home. If this is the case, there are YouTube tutorials with techniques that you can use to trim your own hair at home. Here are a few ways that you can trim your hair at home.

Embedded content: https://www.youtube.com/embed/fq4UODOJAiA

Twist or braid method

This method entails separating your hair into sections, and twisting or braiding into smaller sections. Then, trim each twist one at a time. Make sure to only cut one-fourth to one-half an inch. This method is good for naturalistas with shorter hair.

Embedded content: https://www.youtube.com/embed/Efugx6RJSkw

Trimming your hair while stretched

This technique is great for beginners. You would part your hair in medium sized vertical sections, and then spray your ends with water. The next step is to detangle the hair. Then, use a comb to stretch your hair, and hold it tight between your fingers to clip the damaged split ends.

Embedded content: https://www.youtube.com/embed/nq_QySS08-o

Blow-dry and flat iron trimming

This method is better for those naturals with longer hair. After washing your hair and applying a heat protectant, blow-dry, and lightly flat iron. This makes it easier to achieve an even finish. Place a section between your fingers, smooth it out with a comb from roots to ends, and dust the hair evenly to get rid of the ends that are damaged.

Search and destroy method

This is a popular method among many naturals. This method involves searching for split ends and damaged hair, and only trimming those strands. Achieving evenness or layers is not the priority.

These are many of the ways that you can trim your hair, and they are each equally effective in their own way. Before starting, make sure you feel confident, and then determine which method best fits your hair’s needs. Remember, if you are not comfortable cutting or trimming your own hair, then consult a hairstylist and get a professional trim.

Heatless Ways to Get the BIG Hair You Want
PICTURED @AHFRO_BAANG

My Curlsmith Review For Curlies

You may have seen the buzz around the internet about the latest product line for curly girls called Curlsmith. Curlsmith is a gourmet haircare brand that was made for curly girls. The product line launched in March and was created in collaboration with trichologists, hair stylists, beauty experts, and consumers inspired from home recipes and remedies with natural ingredients. Curlsmith collaborated with curly girls and experts through the entire process of creating the product line. Everyone in the process was involved in making decisions on everything from the ingredients to the packaging. The formulas were tried and tested by hundreds of our curly girls.I recently tried out the line for myself, and I was impressed. The good thing about Curlsmith is that they use only the best clean ingredients. Curlsmith has no Sulfates, Parabens, Silicones, Mineral Oils, Phthalates, DEA and is also vegan and cruelty-free.

Here are my thoughts on the products.

Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash

Curlsmith wants you to know that this is not a traditional foaming shampoo. This product is a gentle yet lightweight formula that works hard to remove buildup and dirt from your hair. Blended with Andiroba to help to restore shine and provide moisture.

My Thoughts

I am not big on co-washing my hair but, I was impressed that I was able to detangle easily after using this product. My hair felt soft after just one use. I will use this product again.

Curl Conditioning Oil-In-Cream

The Curl Conditioning Oil-In-Cream is a rich leave-in conditioner that is perfect for any length. Curlsmith says it won’t flake and it is also non-greasy. The Curl Conditioning Oil–In Cream is made with organic Carrot, olive and aloe vera oils to provide your hair with extra strength, moisture, and shine.

My Thoughts

I thought it was a very lightweight conditioner that did what it said it would do. It left my hair feeling very soft and manageable.

Intense Deep Treatment Oil Serum

This serum is very versatile and helps to give your hair shine while also making it soft and manageable. This serum contains Oats to help enhance the elasticity of your hair and also Macadamia to help protect your hair against damage.

My Thoughts

A little goes a long way with this serum. It comes in a solid form, so you have to melt it before putting it on your hair. I used it as the oil in my LOC method, and it did make my hair soft, and I felt that it penetrated through my hair which is good for those with low-porosity hair.

Curl Defining Styling Souffle

The Souffle is a styling souffle that is made to help give your hair definition while not weighing it down. Curlsmith says that it is suitable for wash and go’s, braid outs and twist outs and it won’t leave your hair crunchy. It is infused with Babassu oil to give moisture and flax seed to define curls.

My Thoughts

At first, I was a little scared of the consistency of this souffle. It didn’t appear like it would penetrate into my hair and I was scared that it would just sit on top. To my surprise, it melted in my hands, and I applied it just like any other styler I would use. It gave my hair tons of definition and did not leave any residue.
