5 Multi-Purpose Products That Work For My Entire Family

Multi-purpose products have been the latest buzz in natural hair community. These products are a dream for minimalists who like to keep it simple. Every day I look up there is another brand jumping on board and creating a product that you can use for multiple steps in your hair care regimen. Here are a few products that not only work for me, but for everyone in my family.

Mane Choice Revitalize & Refresh 3 in 1 Conditioner

This product is a 3-in-1 Co-Wash, Leave-In, and also a Detangler. It instantly detangles the hair, cutting the detangling routine in half. It is also infused with Biotin and Tea Tree, and is gentle enough for daily use. The Mane Choice Revitalize & Refresh also helps to stop breakage during detangling.

Moroccan Rhassoul 5-in-1 Clay Treatment helps to replace five products in your hair regimen. This product is a detoxifying cleanser, a smoothing conditioner, detangler, deep conditioner and a leave-in conditioner. It’s known to be a great leave your curls defined and detoxified.

Nefertiti’s Secret Complete Hydration Conditioner

It is infused with moringa oil, aloe vera, and rosemary extracts which helps to soften and restore moisture to your hair. It is a unique formula that can be used as a cowash, daily conditioner, deep conditioner, or leave in conditioner.

So Cozy 3 in 1

So Cozy 3 in 1 Shampoo + Conditioner + Body Wash that is excellent for kids and adults too! As you know wash day with a toddler can be a hassle, so I was intrigued when I learned of So Cozy’s 3 in 1 shampoo conditioner and body wash. They have combined three essential steps cleverly squeezed into one product that is easy, effortless, and fast to use.

Cantu Men’s 3 in 1

You can’t forget about the men in your life. Cantu Men’s 3 in 1 is a Shampoo, Conditioner & Body Wash product all in one. It is infused with caffeine and hemp seed oil to help the hair grow stronger, thicker, and to help increase scalp health. The Cantu Men’s collection is specifically formulated for the needs of men with wavy, curly, and coarse hair.

Overall, I love using multi use products. I won’t say that I will completely switch to only using this versus products that are made specifically for each step in my was day, but I will use them from time to time. If you are a curly girl who wants to cut time from your regimen and only have to use one product, this is perfect for you.

Have you tried multiple use products for your hair? What were your thoughts?

My Curlsmith Review For Curlies

You may have seen the buzz around the internet about the latest product line for curly girls called Curlsmith. Curlsmith is a gourmet haircare brand that was made for curly girls. The product line launched in March and was created in collaboration with trichologists, hair stylists, beauty experts, and consumers inspired from home recipes and remedies with natural ingredients. Curlsmith collaborated with curly girls and experts through the entire process of creating the product line. Everyone in the process was involved in making decisions on everything from the ingredients to the packaging. The formulas were tried and tested by hundreds of our curly girls.I recently tried out the line for myself, and I was impressed. The good thing about Curlsmith is that they use only the best clean ingredients. Curlsmith has no Sulfates, Parabens, Silicones, Mineral Oils, Phthalates, DEA and is also vegan and cruelty-free.

Here are my thoughts on the products.

Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash

Curlsmith wants you to know that this is not a traditional foaming shampoo. This product is a gentle yet lightweight formula that works hard to remove buildup and dirt from your hair. Blended with Andiroba to help to restore shine and provide moisture.

My Thoughts

I am not big on co-washing my hair but, I was impressed that I was able to detangle easily after using this product. My hair felt soft after just one use. I will use this product again.

Curl Conditioning Oil-In-Cream

The Curl Conditioning Oil-In-Cream is a rich leave-in conditioner that is perfect for any length. Curlsmith says it won’t flake and it is also non-greasy. The Curl Conditioning Oil–In Cream is made with organic Carrot, olive and aloe vera oils to provide your hair with extra strength, moisture, and shine.

My Thoughts

I thought it was a very lightweight conditioner that did what it said it would do. It left my hair feeling very soft and manageable.

Intense Deep Treatment Oil Serum

This serum is very versatile and helps to give your hair shine while also making it soft and manageable. This serum contains Oats to help enhance the elasticity of your hair and also Macadamia to help protect your hair against damage.

My Thoughts

A little goes a long way with this serum. It comes in a solid form, so you have to melt it before putting it on your hair. I used it as the oil in my LOC method, and it did make my hair soft, and I felt that it penetrated through my hair which is good for those with low-porosity hair.

Curl Defining Styling Souffle

The Souffle is a styling souffle that is made to help give your hair definition while not weighing it down. Curlsmith says that it is suitable for wash and go’s, braid outs and twist outs and it won’t leave your hair crunchy. It is infused with Babassu oil to give moisture and flax seed to define curls.

My Thoughts

At first, I was a little scared of the consistency of this souffle. It didn’t appear like it would penetrate into my hair and I was scared that it would just sit on top. To my surprise, it melted in my hands, and I applied it just like any other styler I would use. It gave my hair tons of definition and did not leave any residue.

If you are looking for a new product line to try out check out Curlsmith and let us know what you think!

These Products Make Transitioning SO Much Easier

The big chop may not be for you, so you decide to transition to natural and grow your relaxer out gradually. Transitioning to natural can be a tough journey, and it requires a lot of time and patience. It can become stressful, especially finding the best products that work for our hair, and particularly when you have type 4 hair.

When transitioning, it is important that the products that you use help you balance your hair with both moisture and protein. As you get more familiar with your hair, you will learn the signs that your moisture and protein are balanced. Here are a few products and accessories to make your transition easier.

Shampoos

It’s essential to find a really good sulfate-free shampoo because sulfates will strip your hair of moisture and that is a big no-no for transitioners. One of my favorite shampoos during my transition was Creme of Nature Sulfate Free Moisture and Shine Shampoo. I now use Design Essentials Almond and Avocado Shampoo.

Conditioners

If you are transitioning, then you know that detangling your hair is probably one of the most challenging parts of your journey right now. I found it so much easier to detangle my hair while it was wet. I would add a moisturizing conditioner like Creme of Nature Mango and Shea Butter Ultra Moisturizing Conditioner to my hair and detangle with a wide tooth comb. Make sure to detangle from starting at your ends and working your way up. It makes the process much easier. For deep conditioning, I love TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask. I have used this deep conditioner from the beginning, and it is one of my staple products. Balance your hair out with a moisturizing deep conditioner and a protein deep conditioner like Mielle Organics Babassu Oil and Mint deep conditioner.

Leave-In Conditioners, Moisturizers, and Sealants

Now you may be thinking that because you use a rinse-out conditioner or a deep conditioner that you don’t need a leave-in, but that is not true. Water0based leave ins are amazing for transitioning hair. When I was transitioning EDEN BodyWorks Coconut Shea Leave In Conditioner  was my go to leave-in. It is very lightweight and moisturized my hair very well. I still use it to this day. I also love to use Jane Carter Nourish and Shine as a sealant to seal in moisture or to take town twists. A sealant will help lock the moisture in your hair from your leave in. You can also use oils like grapeseed, jojoba and almond oil as sealants.

Stylers

When I was transitioning, I wore my hair in twists, curls and braids to camouflage my relaxed ends. My favorite styling products while transitioning were light creams like EDEN BodyWorks Coconut Shea Curl Defining Creme. This creme is very lightweight and won’t weigh your hair down. It defines and styles your hair to give you the best styles while transitioning. This was one of my go-to stylers while transitioning and still is to this day. Other stylers that I love include CURLS Blueberry Bliss Twist – Shout Creme and Design Essentials Natural Curl Enhancing Mousse.

Final Advice For Transitioners

I know transitioning can be a rough time that requires a lot of time and patience but stick in there. Develop your hair regimen early on so that you have the framework to follow through your transition. Once you find the products that work best for your hair stick with them.

Are you transitioning? What products do you use?

I Tried LivSo, the Latest Dry & Itchy Scalp Solution

Do you suffer from dry and itchy scalp? If you do, then you know how embarrassing it is when your hair flakes and there is dandruff all over your cute black shirt. I recently got the chance to try out a new product line called LivSo. LivSo was created to give people with curly hair a gentle and effective solution for dealing with dry scalp and brittle hair.

LivSo was created by Dr. Shari Hicks-Graham who is a Board-certified dermatologist. In her work, Dr. Graham-Hicks helped people with curly and kinky hair manage their scalp issues. Hicks- Graham recognized that scalp issues were could be a culprit that lead to hair loss. She noticed that there was not a product that truly worked for dry and itchy scalp as it should and that didn’t create additional problems for her patients. She began to notice how embarrassing, stressful and emotional these scalp issues were for her patients. So, Dr. Hicks-Graham decided to do something to help with her patients’ scalp issues. LivSo’s mission is to give people with curly and kinky hair a gentle and effective solution for dealing with dry scalp and brittle hair. LivSo was created based on scientific expertise and clinical experience.

Moisturizing Shampoo

This Moisturizing Shampoo has key ingredients such as coconut oil, glycolic acid and xylitol that help to reduce dryness, flaking, and itching. It has a very rich consistency and leaves your hair feeling clean and not stripped. It’s sulfate free and can be used on relaxed and natural hair. Some of the key ingredients include coconut oil to keep the scalp healthy and also to help with hair growth.

My Thoughts

I was impressed that it did not leave my hair stripped. I am always skeptical of shampoos that are geared towards dry scalp because in my experience they leave your hair feeling stripped, but this shampoo did not. I also noticed that with multiple uses my dandruff has been under control.

Moisturizing Conditioner

This moisturizing conditioner has hand-selected ingredients that are formulated to help hydrate your hair and scalp. This conditioner is also very rich to give your hair slip and help ease the detangling process.

My Thoughts

I was impressed by the slip in this conditioner. If a conditioner does what it says it will then I am sold. Another plus, is this conditioner is infused with Abyssinian oil to help provide your hair with a natural shine plus moisture.

Moisturizing Lotion

The moisturizing lotion is very lightweight. It is intended for use on the scalp to help condition and strengthen the hair. You can use it as a leave-in or as a daily moisturizer. It is infused with willow bark extract to exfoliate your scalp and remove flakes.

My Thoughts

I used this for a daily moisturizer and my scalp felt amazing! I felt a difference in my scalp after using it.

My Overall Review

I love the fact that this line was created by a dermatologist who saw a need to help her patients who suffered from dry scalp. Just the story behind the line alone made me want to try it. As a person who does suffer from dandruff and dry scalp who has thick curly hair, it is nice to see a line made with me in mind. I will keep these products in my regimen to use as maintenance for my dandruff.

Your Holy Grail Product Should Do These 4 Things

I consider myself a natural OG in the natural hair community. I have tried about every product that you can think of on the market. When there is a new product that comes out my eyes get big, and I always want to try it out! I guess that is the inner product junkie in me, but when it comes to my holy grail products they have to meet my standards to stick around in my regimen. When I am on the hunt for a new product that could possibly be a holy grail, I look for certain characteristics in my products. Here is what I look for in my holy grail products.

Help with Moisture

I have low porosity hair, so it is very hard for my hair to retain moisture. My holy grail products must help with maintaining moisture in my hair. The key for me is a good deep conditioner that penetrates my hair. I have talked about this deep conditioner a million times, but it works well on my hair. TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask is my ultimate Holy Grail. It is everything I look for in a deep conditioner. It helps keep my hair moisturized and healthy. I love to use it with steam to get even better results, as steam opens up my cuticles to help get the product in my hair and penetrate. So as long as a product can show me over and over again that it can moisturize my hair, it is a keeper and a holy grail.

Define My Curls

I have thick hair so finding products that define my hair is important to me. If a product can define my curls and keep my hair moisturized it’s a win-win. I can’t decide when it comes to holy grail curl defining products, but I have a few favorites. EDEN Bodyworks Coconut Shea Curl Defining Creme and CURLS Blueberry Bliss Twist-N-Shout Cream are my favorites. Both of these products work well with my low porosity curls and give me definition out of this world!

Provide Versatility

If a product is versatile and can serve multiple purposes, then I am all for it. I love mousses particularly because I can use them for rod sets and also on a twist out. Versatility is also important to me because it helps me save money on using one product for multiple uses. One of my favorite mousses to use is Creme Of Nature Argan Oil Style & Shine Foaming Mousse.

No Harsh Ingredients

I like to avoid products with harsh ingredients on my hair. Now I will use sulfates from time to time, and I am not ashamed. I do typically avoid sulfates and harsh alcohols on my hair. I don’t like products that will dry my hair out. I avoid any products that if after using them my hair is left dry, brittle, and lifeless. I love organic ingredients and will try to use products that have them in my regimen from time to time. As long as the products I use don’t have any of my no-no ingredients, then I will try them out.

What do you look for in your holy grail products?

Here’s How to Tell If You Need a Leave-In or a Moisturizer

Caring for our curls takes time, patience, and many times trial and error. Everywhere you look there are a ton of products on the market that we can use for our curls. From shampoos, conditioners, stylers, gels, and creams it can be a bit confusing on what all of these products do for our hair and if they are similar. I will admit that when I first went natural, I had a ton of questions about the products that I was using in my healthy hair regimen. One of my biggest questions specifically was, “What’s the difference between a leave in conditioner and a moisturizer?” Well if you were wondering like me, keep reading to find out how they differ, how they are used, and some benefits they both provide.

When should you use a leave-in conditioner?

The purpose of a leave-in conditioner is to help to fortify the hair strands with strength and also to add moisture. Leave-in conditioners are typically used on damp hair directly after shampooing and are generally water based. Leave-in conditioners are one of the best products designed to give your hair hydration, elasticity, and manageability.

You should use a leave in conditioner if you:

  • have low porosity hair
  • need help with detangling
  • like to spruce up second or third day hair

Low-porosity hair is very hard to moisturize and water based leave-in conditioners work wonders because they help to penetrate your hair shaft. Leave-in conditioners are also great for helping to detangle your hair. Leave-in conditioners that have some slip make a world of difference when detangling the hair. Some of my favorite leave-in conditioners include EDEN BodyWorks Coconut Shea leave in, Treluxe Untie the Knot Leave-in Conditioner and Jane Carter Revitalizing Leave-in.

When should you use a daily moisturizer?

Daily moisturizers are used to help keep the hair moisturized and manageable between washes. You can use a daily moisturizer on wet or damp, or dry hair. Daily moisturizers are on the richer side, so they resemble creams, butters or lotions.

You should use a daily moisturizer if

  • your hair is dry
  • you like to moisturize your hair on a daily basis to keep your curls bouncy

Some moisturizers are heavier while others are lightweight. If you have high porosity hair, a heavy moisturizer or sealant would be great to use.  Jane Carter Solution Nourish and Shine is an amazing heavy butter that is also good to use as a daily moisturizer. The NaturallyCurly community voted Oyin Handmade Hair Dew as their favorite moisturizer in 2016 in the annual Best of the Best awards.

Do you know your porosity?

There are three levels of porosity: low, medium, and high. Low porosity hair takes a long time for water to penetrate and saturate the hair, and it also takes a long time to dry. High porosity quickly becomes wet when water touches the hair, and it also dries quickly. If you don’t know your hair’s porosity level, here are 3 quick ways to figure it out.

Your porosity will be a big determining factor in which products and what kinds of products react well to your hair, so it’s important to have a basic understanding of this. For curly girls with low porosity hair, lightweight leave-in conditioners work wonders. Heavier creams and moisturizers don’t work well for low porosity hair but work really well for those with high porosity hair because they are heavier.

The Products Boo & I Share & Love

My husband has locs and I always find his hands in my product stash. Every time I go to grab my favorite products I always find that they are running low. At first, I thought I was heavy-handed when it came to my products, but I later learned that it was actually my husband sneaking into my stash and using the products on himself. I never knew my husband loved some of the same products that I love. Here are some of our favorite products.

Creme of Nature Detangling & Conditioning Leave-In Conditioner

We go through bottles of this leave in conditioner monthly. Not only do we both use it, but I also use it on my daughter’s hair as well. I love this leave in because it leaves my hair soft and easy to manage. My husband loves the smell and loves how it keeps his hair hydrated. My husband told me that having locs it is sometimes very hard to keep the hair moisturized. He uses a leave in daily because he wants his scalp to thrive and his hair to continue to stay healthy.

Creme of Nature Perfect Edges Extra Hold Edge Control

The new growth that my husband gets with his locs is insane. On those days when my husband can’t get to the salon to get his hair retwisted, he sneaks into my stash and uses my edge control. He loves the way Creme of Nature’s edge control smells, and it gives his hair hold. He will sometimes use this to re-twist a few of the locs in the front of his hair. Or to slick down unruly new growth flyaways.

EDEN BodyWorks Citrus Fusion Refresher Spray

The new EDEN BodyWorks Citrus Fusion Refresher Spray is also a new staple in my household. This is another product that I use on my daughter’s hair as well. We love this product because of its dual use for skin and hair. It is so soothing on your skin, and it leaves your hair shiny. I love to use this to spruce up my second-day hair and also after I get out of the shower. I spray a little on, and my skin feels so amazing. My husband likes to use it to refresh his locs in the morning. He told me that he uses it because it is very lightweight and smells good.

Be Kekoa Tamanu Oil Blend

This oil is simply amazing. The Be Kekoa Tamanu Oil and 100% certified, pure, therapeutic grade (CPTG”> essential oils of your choosing. For my blend, I chose lavender and Hawaiian Sandalwood. My husband thinks this oil is one of the best oils that he has tried. He uses it on his scalp to prevent dry scalp. This oil has so many uses. You can also use it on your skin as well. My husband has really dry feet, and this oil has been a lifesaver for his feet. I use this product on my scalp, I have also used it to help with stretch marks, and on my skin. This product was recently introduced to us and will remain one of our favorites oils and holy grails.

Do you and your boo share products? Which ones do you love?

Here’s What NOT to Do Before You Dye Your Hair
Photo Via @dailiperez

Have you been looking to change your hair color for the new season? Before you book your hair appointment with your stylist to dye your hair, it’s important to understand the process and prepare properly. There are some things to consider before your next appointment and questions that you should ask your hair stylist. Like, “How should you prep for your hair appointment?” We spoke with hair stylist and educator, LaToyah Smith of My Toy Art, and she let us know all the details on what to do and what not to do before your next hair color appointment.

Should you wash your hair before dyeing it?

Smith: “Shampooing your hair yourself before coloring isn’t always necessary because the stylist needs to see what he or is is working with before a chemical service. I would suggest planning for more time at the Salon and getting it shampooed there. Unless you’ve already consulted with your stylist and he or she instructed you to do so, it is best not to shampoo your hair before your appointment.”

“Here are a few things not to do prior getting a color service done.”

  • Do not scratch your scalp

  • Do not use CHEMICAL services (at home coloring, tinting or relaxing”>

  • Do not install extensions in your hair

  • Do not put stress on the hair (rubber bands, excessive heat (flat iron”>, or put a lot of products on your hair

  • Do not shampoo with sulfate free shampoo

What’s the process for dyeing your hair?

Smith: “When getting a color service you should be 100%  honest about any chemical you’ve ever put on your hair before this appointment. This will prevent chemical reactions, hair loss or the risk of the color not being entirely accurate. Let your stylist know what you’ve done, so that they can prevent any problems. Also, be realistic with your expectations. Color is a chemical, and chemical services take time to process and perfect. This is especially true when working to keep the integrity of your hair. An example is if you want to go from jet black to high lift blonde, it cannot be done in one visit, or you won’t have any hair! So this is something to think about. Also, have patience and trust your stylist’s professional opinion about what your hair can or cannot take and what may or may not work for your hair. Lastly, be sure to purchase color treated products to help keep your color fresh, moisturized and vibrant.”

So now that you know what you should and should not do before getting your hair colored, are you ready to take the plunge?

Why Jane Carter Doesn’t Believe Hair Is Defined by Ethnicity or Race
One of the innovators that strives to break barriers in the hair care world is Jane Carter, who has been recognized around the globe as a leading natural hair care innovator. Let’s celebrate her achievements and find out what makes her journey unique!

Jane’s Story

Jane Carter has been a professional hair stylist and salon owner for over 20 years, representing women and catering to diversity. She has experienced a lot in her life that has shaped her into the woman she is today. From segregation and racism to being one of the first African-American students to be admitted into a white elementary school at the age of six, Jane Carter understands the importance of diversity. Jane is committed to creating a global beauty community that includes all hair types and textures with an intention to help women embrace their natural beauty.

The Creation of Jane Carter Solution

Jane experienced a respiratory allergic reaction from ingredients used in traditional beauty products, so she decided to create her own product line using plant-derived ingredients, essentials oils, sea botanicals and natural proteins that are specifically designed for all hair types and textures. In 1992, she created her first product, the Hair Nourishing Serum, that marked the official beginning of the Jane Carter Solution product line. Her line has expanded to leave-in conditioners, gels, shampoos and body butters, to name a few. Jane has won numerous awards and has been featured in magazines such as Black Enterprise, ESSENCE, and InStyle as being a leading manufacturer of all natural hair products, created for ALL hair types. In 2005, she began selling her product line in Whole Foods Market, it’s now available in over 200 stores.

The Queen Bey has even named Jane Carter Solution as one of her holy grail beauty lines! Ahhh, that’s major!

At Jane Carter Solution we believe hair isn’t defined by ethnicity or race, it is defined by hair type and texture… fine, medium or coarse, straight, wavy, curly or coily. Our goal is to help you simplify your hair care routine and love the hair you wear!
Jane Carter

Recently, Jane Carter released a new hair care line called Curls To GO. I tried out the new line and I am in love with every single product! Curls To GO is ideal for curly girls with type 4a-4c hair. I was excited to try this line out because even though I don’t do hair typing, my hair is super coily and curly which this line is geared towards. The Curls To GO line consists of the following products:

One of my favorite products from the line is the UnTangle Me Weightless Leave-In Conditioner. It is made with mango butter, slippery elm, marshmallow root. It moisturizes your curls while helping to prevent frizz. My hair felt so soft after using this product and the moisture I experienced was amazing. I couldn’t believe how soft this leave-in made my hair after one use. Detangling my hair was simply a breeze.

I also loved the Coiling All Curls Elongating Gel. I never thought that I would be able to achieve a super defined wash and go with my tightly curly hair but with this gel I was able to achieve a very defined wash and go that wasn’t crunchy or flaky. This line is amazing for helping to add moisture to your hair and also helps to strengthen it.

Overall I loved this line and it will definitely be added to my regimen. Check out my full review below.

Have you tried the new Curls To GO Line? Let me know what you thought.

Why My Husband Loves My Natural Hair

When I first started dating my now husband in 2009, I was in the process of transitioning my hair back to natural. The funny thing is my husband had just begun his Loc journey at the same time. We were somewhat transitioning to natural together. I felt like we have always been on the same wavelength when it comes to natural hair. He never had a problem with me transitioning back to natural, he actually encouraged it. He was and still is my biggest supporter with my natural hair , actually with everything in my life! Here are some reasons why my husband loves my natural hair.

Versatility

My husband loves the versatility of my hair. It’s basically like he is dating a new girl every time my hair changes! He loves my hair straight, curly and when it’s in a protective style. I think he loves my twist outs the most. He always tells me that the bigger my hair, the better. When I was going to cut my hair, I did ask my husband if he would be ok with it. He knew that my hair was severely damaged and encouraged me to cut it because he understood that the health of my hair is more important than the length. He encourages me and compliments me with every style I try. He does like me to wear my natural hair versus weaves. I always find myself asking him, “Do you like my hair?” I think as women we always want confirmation from our spouse , but I love that he accepts me and loves my hair the way it grows out of my head.

He Can Use My Products

My husband loves the fact that some of the products that I use on my hair, he can also use for his locs. He loves taking my spray liquid leave in conditioners and using it to refresh his hair. The biggest benefit of being somewhat of a product junkie is that he gets to use my products. He loves the fact that he does not have to buy anything for his hair and that he can use my products.

He Loves That I am Setting an Example For Our Daughter

My husband loves that I set an example for our daughter to love her natural hair. Since I didn’t get a chance to embrace my curls as a young girl, I am determined to teach my daughter to love and embrace her natural hair. The examples I set for my daughter are important because she watches my every move. I make it my priority to continuously educate myself on how to properly take care of my hair, so that I can continue to keep both of our hair natural and healthy.

He Loves That I Inspire Others To Embrace Their Natural Hair

My husband has been my biggest supporter of my natural journey and everything that it has to offer. He is always telling women that he knows about my blog. Empowering and inspiring other women is my passion and my husband loves that my natural hair helps me to do this. He knows that I love to talk to other curly girls for hours on how to care for their hair.

Does your spouse love your natural hair?

How to Not Kill Your Leave-Out With a Flat Iron
Photo via @themindofmutiny

For many naturalistas the advent of spring means that protective styling is on the horizon. When you wear protective styles that involve some hair to be left out you’ll probably have to manipulate your hair so that it matches your extensions. Back when I was relaxed, I would constantly flat iron my leave out – and my hair suffered. You don’t want to be that girl with a thin leave out that is breaking off. Whether you’re wearing curly extensions or straight extensions, you should be taking care of your leave out when your hair is tucked away. You want your edges to flourish, so here are a few ways not to kill your leave out when wearing extensions.

Keep it Minimal

Try to only leave out as much hair as needed. Leave out enough hair to help cover your tracks, and that’s it. Make sure that you part your hair on the side where you typically part your hair to style, so that it is easier for your hair to lay.

Shampoo and Condition + Moisturize and Seal

Shampooing may be a no-brainer, but you still need to wash and condition your leave out while protective styling. Washing every 2-3 weeks is a good timeframe for your leave out. Use a gentle sulfate free shampoo and deep condition, and be sure to use a leave in conditioner on your leave out to keep it healthy. If you practice the LOC method, this still applies to your leave out as well. Make sure to seal in the moisture in your hair. You should treat your leave out just like you would if you were not protective styling. Let your leave out air dry rather than blow drying it. Braiding it to stretch it is best, so that you won’t use too much heat when it’s time to style.

Twist or Braid Your Leave out

This is a healthier alternative to always flat ironing your leave out. If you are low maintenance like me this is perfect for you. Create a cute twist or braid in the front with your leave out. I have seen some gorgeous styles with a leave out that was twisted or braided around the perimeter. You can create a halo type of twist or create one on each side. This way you don’t have to bother with your leave out at all and you keep your hair protected.

Less Heat + Heat Protectant

If you must use heat, keep the flat ironing to a minimum and do only one pass. Make sure that you are using a heat protectant on your leave out when flat ironing it. The key is to flat iron only once between washings. The bottom line is: don’t apply heat unless absolutely necessary.

Improvise

Give your hair a break every once in a while and rock a turban or a scarf with your protective style. You can also try flexi rods to blend your leave out.

How do you keep your leave out healthy while protective styling?

This Is How You Can Embrace The Awkward Phase of Transitioning

Long-term transitioning taught me a lot about my hair. It took me two years to transition from relaxed hair to natural, which may seem like a long time to many curlies, but for me it was very necessary. I learned so much in those two years about myself and also about what my hair liked and didn’t like. I also learned to accept the awkward phase when my hair wouldn’t work in every style. Every day was not easy, but I learned as I went and tried a lot of styles and products that helped me during that middle phase of transitioning. Here are some tips to help you get through that awkward middle phase of transitioning.

Essential Tools

Make sure that you invest in a really good detangling brush to get you through those days where you need it most. I love my Felicia Leatherwood detangling brush. Ever since I purchased this brush, it has been my savior in detangling my hair. Also, buy a good head wrap. There is nothing like not feeling like doing your hair and tossing it up into a cute headwrap and heading out the door. Head wraps save lives! Some of my favorite head wraps are from the Wrap Life.

Products are Key

Products that gave my hair a lot of slip were essential during my awkward phases of transitioning. I needed something that would quickly help me detangle my new growth without ripping my hair. The line where your natural hair meets your relaxed hair is very fragile, and you need to be very careful when detangling your hair. Finding a good deep conditioner is critical during the transitioning phase as well. Find a good conditioner that keeps your hair well moisturized. A great deep conditioner to try is the TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask. Keep in mind that something can work well for someone else, but not work for you. It is a trial and error process when finding the right products for your hair. Don’t be afraid to venture out and try new products if what you have is not working.

Best Transitioning Hairstyles

Some hairstyles, such as wash and go’s, didn’t work for me while I was transitioning. I loved rod sets, twist and curls and braid and curls. These styles helped to hide my relaxed hair from my new growth. I was able to easily camouflage my relaxed hair with these styles. My advice is to try styles that are easy for you and if it does not come out like you want it the first time don’t give up. Try it again using a different technique. My motto is if at first you don’t succeed try try again.

Remain Confident

When I initially tried many of my favorite hairstyles for the first time, I honestly thought I looked a hot mess. It takes time and patience to achieve different hairstyles, especially when you’re transitioning. No matter what, remember to embrace your natural journey, because it will be worth it in the end.

How do you embrace the awkward phase of transitioning?

Why Are Natural Hair Products So Expensive?

It’s no secret that natural hair products can be expensive, but have you ever wondered what exactly you’re pay for? It’s important to be conscious of what you put on your hair and skin. No matter what you’re buying  you always get what you pay for, but it does help to know the reason behind the price tag that sometimes makes us think twice.

There are several factors that go into creating quality natural hair products such as ingredients, packaging and personalization. We talked with Aisha Crump, founder and owner of Honey Baby Naturals, she answered a few questions on why natural hair products cost so much. Let’s see what she has to say!

How do ingredients play a role in pricing?

Crump: “It took me a year to get my products right, I wanted to make sure Honey Baby Naturals would be quality and high performing products. I did not want to spare any expenses because I wanted to provide the best ingredients for my consumers. I didn’t want any parabens or negative ingredients in my products. I use alternatives such as carrot oil for the color, which is more expensive. The oils that I use in my products are also high quality and cost more such as avocado oils. The butter we use such as Shea butter is more expensive than butters found in cheaper products. Natural ingredients yield higher price tags when it comes to ingredients. Products that are rich in natural ingredients perform higher, and thus the cost is more. Synthetic products cost less because of the cheaper ingredients that are found in them such as sulfates.”

How do manufacturing costs play a role in pricing?

Crump: “Big companies can order tens of millions of units while smaller companies pay for cost per item which is triple the price. Pricing is based on volume and also packaging. Smaller companies like myself pay a higher cost compared to larger companies because we are making smaller units. Honey Baby Naturals also sources everything domestically from the United States, and this is a huge factor in cost. We prefer to buy materials from black-owned businesses if we can to bring the cost down. By consolidating SKUs in the same packaging, we get a better deal on prices.”

Are there unexpected expenses that can occur?

Crump: “Smaller brands have to compete with bigger brands. Marketing costs are a significant portion of the expenses. People will not find out about you if you aren’t marketing your brand. So, we have to do direct to consumer advertising and also attend trade shows. We want to make sure our consumers understand how to use our products.”

What are some other costs you face?

Crump: “There are also other costs like legal, trademarks and patent fees. Small brands also have intellectual property and legal fees and insurance for recalls or problems. We also have the costs of storing and transporting our products. There are also sampling costs involved. We want our customers to know if they like our products first before purchasing. We also have to think about travel expenses, staff, warehouse, and office space expenses.”

How do overhead costs play a role?

Crump: “We want to spend money on what matters most, and that is our customers. We keep our overhead costs low which gives us an opportunity to compete with other brands.”
