Being a mom is a full-time job, so if you’re also working, your time is limited. Things can get tricky when you factor in working all day and then washing your little one’s hair. As parents, time management can be challenging regarding wash day for our little ones. Are you looking for ways to make wash day easier and still have some time for yourself?
Here are a few tips for busy moms caring for their little one’s hair.
1. Multi-Use Products
You don’t have to use many products to get your desired results. Use your leave-in conditioner for multiple uses. You can use a leave-in conditioner to detangle your hair before washing and apply it afterward to retain moisture. Find out what works for you and cut out the excess.
2. Create a Quick and Easy Hair Regimen

Wash day doesn’t have to be difficult. If you create a simple regimen for your child, you will save time. Ensure your wash day regimen includes the basics of detangling, shampooing, conditioning, moisturizing, and styling.
You can modify your child’s regimen to include only what works best for you. Just ensure you never skip any steps; this may make your job harder in the long run. Also, washing every two weeks may work better for you than once weekly. You have to find what works best for you and stick to it.
3. Stick to Simple Hairstyles
When you are a busy mom, sometimes you don’t have time to style your child’s hair daily. Simple hairstyles like chunky twists, buns, and ponytails work best. My biggest time saver most days is styling my daughter’s hair in mini twists.
This style will last a week, and I don’t have to restyle her hair. It saves time and helps retain length because I am not manipulating the hair daily. Remember, when doing any style, it’s still important to keep the hair moisturized daily, so continue to spritz it with water or diluted leave-in conditioner to prevent dryness.
4. Stay Organized
I will admit that I am not the most organized mom in the world, but being organized helps with time management. Planning a wash day and organizing all the necessary tools and products will help make your child’s wash day go quicker.
Keep everything in one place, stay on track, and you will be on your way to a quick wash day with a few minutes to spare. Scheduling wash days helps and feels less overwhelming because you’re expecting it.
5. Stay Consistent

If I have learned anything, it is that consistency works. If you are consistent with your child’s regimen, stay organized, and stick with simple styles, then you will save a lot of time. Your child will be used to the schedule, and there will be less fuss. Wash day and styling don’t have to be a hassle when you are a busy mom.
What wash day and styling tips do you have for busy moms?
Shampoos sometimes have a bad reputation in the natural hair community. When you first go natural, you might have been told to shampoo less or even co-wash instead of shampooing your hair.
Keeping your hair free from product buildup is very important to its health. When your hair is coated with tons of product, it will be hard for the product to penetrate and deposit into your hair shaft. This can prevent growth, cause dry scalp, and so much more. Shampoo your hair as it fits into your schedule and based on your regimen.
One thing we do know is that nothing is worse than dry hair and scalp. Not all shampoos are created equal, so make sure that the shampoo you use does not dry your hair. We’ve got you covered, don’t worry!
Here are 15 of the best hydrating shampoos that will help you in your quest to find the perfect moisturizing shampoo.
1. Mielle Organics Pomegranate & Honey Moisturizing and Detangling Shampoo

Are you a curly girl who has been fighting brittle or dry hair this winter season? Before you go out and grab as many products as you can fit in your cart, let’s compare the various types of hair oils and butters that are used in moisturizers to determine which will be best for you.
Knowing your hair’s porosity can help you choose the right products to keep your hair well-moisturized, supple, strong, and shiny during the transitional periods.
What is porosity?
Your porosity level refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture. This aspect of your hair type will determine what curly hair products, butters, and oils work best for your hair.
Hair Butters
Hair butters are amazing, moisturizing sealants often used for protective styles and in cooler months. While they may have some moisturizing ingredients, they are better suited for sealing in moisture from water or water-based products like moisturizers or leave-in conditioners. They are usually the last step or used right before your styler.
Best butters for low-porosity hair
Most butters used on low-porosity hair should be very light so that the hair is not weighed down and cause product buildup. Some butters that are good for low-porosity hair include:
- Avocado Butter – Have moisture sealing properties that help keep the hair softer for longer. Avocado butter is also a high-quality emollient that has antioxidant properties.
- Murumuru Butter – Murumuru butter is a very light butter. It is rich in omegas, and it helps to soften the hair, promote elasticity,, and add shine. Murumuru butter also helps control frizz and define curls
Best butters for medium porosity hair
Medium porosity hair is easily moisturized and retains its moisture very well. Good butters for medium porosity hair include:
- Cocoa Butter – This will help you keep your hair healthy and soft. Cocoa butter helps to heal and to soften the hair.
- Cupuacu Butter – This is an amazing hair moisturizer that helps absorb water. This butter also helps strengthen the hair and promote a healthy scalp.
Best butters for high porosity hair
For those with high-porosity, moisture retention can be difficult. Moisture is absorbed and also released quickly for high porosity hair. So, the butter used on this type of hair needs to be thick to coat the hair strands to keep moisture in. Hair butter for high-porosity hair include:
- Shea Butter – This is a very heavy butter, but it works wonders for damaged and brittle hair. It is also good to help repair breakage by strengthening your strands from root to tip.
- Tucuma Butter – This is a great butter for those with high-porosity hair. It is considered to have excellent emollient properties and helps to soften your hair.
Pros of Hair Butters
- Outstanding emollients
- Softens hair
- Many butters have properties such as anti-inflammatory, soothing, and antioxidant
Cons of Hair Butter
- Short shelf life
- Heavy sealants can weigh hair down
Hair Oils
Natural oils are good for curlies because they are used for multi-purposes such as heat protectants, detanglers, and moisturizers. Oils are usually applied after your leave-in according to the LOC method to help seal in the moisture of your leave-in conditioner.
Best oils for low-porosity hair
If you’re low porosity, try:
- Grapeseed oil – This light and moisturizing hair oil can benefit all curls. This oil works great to strengthen each strand, increase manageability, protect against heat, and can also be used to combat dry scalp and dandruff. Shelf life: approximately one year.
- Argan oil – Easily absorbed and quite nourishing, this oil is great for your hair, skin, and nails too. For curly girls, Argan oil helps with manageability and can also strengthen the hair. It can be pricey, but a little goes a long way. Shelf life: approximately two years.
Best oils for medium porosity hair
If you’re medium porosity, try:
- Avocado oil – This super nutrient rich oil is heaven for thick-haired curlies. This oil is full of essentials like amino acids, minerals, and vitamins, avocado oil can help strengthen hair and enhance deep conditioning treatments.
- Babassu 0il – This is great for irritated, flaky, or damaged scalp. It also has restorative properties, so it is good for sensitive scalp. Shelf life:
Best oils for high porosity hair
If you’re high porosity, try:
- Jamaican black castor oil– is a special castor oil that can be used for rough hair, split ends, hair loss, and dandruff. Jamaican black castor oil helps thicken hair and enhances hair growth. Shelf life:
- Olive oil – This multipurpose oil is a staple in many hair care regimens. Not only is olive oil a great pre-poo and hot oil treatment option, but extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) works wonders to seal moisture in and can add a kick to your conditioning routine, too. If you have finer hair, you may want to use just a small amount in order to not weigh the hair down. Shelf life: up to 2 years.
Pros of Hair Oils
- Helps with detangling the hair
- Seals in moisture
- Great for heat protection
Cons of Hair Oils
- May leave hair greasy
- Can weigh down hair
- Can’t be used alone to moisturize hair

Supporting black beauty brands is very important to me as a beauty blogger because I love helping others, especially black entrepreneurs. A lot of the beauty brands cater to their consumer’s needs, and many of them use all natural products. In the beauty industry, there are so many black beauty brands on the market from hair, skin, makeup, nail polish and everything in between. Here are a few ways you can support black-owned beauty businesses.
“Girls and women of our race must not be afraid to take hold of business endeavor and, by patient industry, close economy, determined effort, and close application to business, wring success out of a number of business opportunities that lie at their doors.” -Madame C.J. Walker
1. Like & Follow Them on Social Media
Social media is filled with thriving and flourishing black-owned beauty businesses. When you find a product you love, spread the love by tagging them. This helps bring more awareness to their business and build an online presence to connect with more people who want to learn more about the brand.
2. Buy Products, Without Asking For a Discount
Buying the products of your favorite beauty brands should be a no-brainer on how you can support black-owned beauty brands. Just like any other innovative product, you have to pay for it. So when black-owned businesses do create a great product, respect their work and appreciate their service by supporting them.
3. Give Honest Feedback
If your favorite beauty brand does not carry a product for your needs, let them know. If enough people talk about it, they might develop it based on consumer needs. The more feedback you give, it could help them gain more insight and support your needs. Leave reviews and share your experience.
4. Show Up & Show Out
Black-owned beauty businesses host events and expos all over the US and abroad. If you find out about a local event or expo, show your support by attending the event. Invite your friends and stop by their booths to learn more about what their brand has to offer.
5. Spread the Word, Tell a Friend
Word of mouth is still one of the major driving factors in helping to support small businesses. So if you find an amazing product share the excitement with your family and friends.
It is so great to see so many entrepreneurs following their dreams and creating products and getting recognition in the beauty space. So when I find a product that I like, I share it, if it’s black-owned its a plus!

Caring for your own hair is quite the task, and when you have a curly kid it’s double the effort and work caring for two heads of hair. My daughter is 5 now and I always get asked for tips on how I care for her hair. Over the years I’ve learned the best way to care for her hair, what her hair likes and how to keep us both happy! Here are a few of my must have mom tips when caring for your curly kids hair.
1. Use a Pre-Poo
I’ve found that using a pre-poo like Mielle Organics Mongongo Pre-poo helps to detangle her hair before shampooing to help melt the tangles. A Pre-Poo is used before you wash the hair, and it helps to moisturize and detangle the curls. Pre-Poo saves so much time and has really been a game changer when it comes to detangling my daughter’s hair.
2. Wash Less Often
Believe it or not, I only wash my daughters hair about once a month. I try to keep my hands out of her hair so often. Make sure you create a wash day routine that works best for you. If you feel the need to wash more often, consider trying a co-wash like EdenBodyworks Coconut Shea Cleansing Co Wash. Co washing gently cleanses the hair while also adding moisture without stripping away the natural oils from the hair.
3. Detangle The Hair While Wet!
I also always make sure to detangle her hair wet not dry. This will save you tears on both ends! I love using the Felicia Leatherwood brush to help detangle my daughters curls. It works wonders! NEVER, detangle dry hair. It will be a nightmare, trust me on this!

4. Try Protective Styling
Mini twists are my favorite protective style for my daughter. They last long and serve as a two part hairstyle! I usually keep the mini twists in my daughter’s hair for about two weeks, then she wears a twist out for a few days, and then a bun. I like to keep it simple and keep my hands out of her hair all the time.
5. Use The LOC Method
Let’s face it natural hair tends to get dry and that is no exception with our curly kids. I’ve found that using the LOC method on my daughters hair helps keep her hair moisturized. If you haven’t heard of the LOC method, it is an abbreviation for leave in conditioner, oil and cream. It is also the way you should apply the products to your hair. The layering of products in a specific order help to maximize moisture retention. I’ve seen a major difference in my daughters hair when I use the LOC method. Some prefer LCO vs LOC. The technique is really up to you on what works best on your child’s hair. I like to use the following products on my daughter’s hair for the LOC method, Mielle Organics White Peony Leave-In, Mint Almond Oil, and Avocado Hair Milk.
6. Always Protect The Hair At Night
Keeping your curly kid’s hair protected at night is very important to keep their hair healthy. I always make sure that my daughter sleeps in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase. Cotton can dry out the hair, so it’s important to keep the hair covered while sleeping. Check out the Essential Bedtime Routine For Curly Kids.

Back to school season is in full effect! My daughter is headed to Kindergarten this year. A new journey for us both! Do you have kids heading back to school or even college? I know you are probably shopping for all of the back to school supplies but did you make sure to add the hair supplies that you will need too? Make sure you have all the hair essentials you need so that you and your kids and even college kids have a good hair year! Here are a few items that should be on your hair must-have list for back to school season.
Ouchless Hair Ties
Hair ties are the life of the party. I know that I am always searching for some that won’t tear my daughter’s hair out. Ouchless bands are the best because they are not made with the metal clasp that has a history of tearing out hair! They are very affordable and can be found almost anywhere. I love the Goody Ouchless brand.
Satin Pillowcase or Bonnet
We can’t forget about the satin pillowcases or bonnets. You should always be protecting your hair at night. So if you have a college kid it’s crucial that you send them to school with one of these. I just bought my daughter a new bonnet for the school year. I need to make sure her hair is always protected at night.
Bobby Pins
Why does it seem like we always lose bobby pins!? Make sure to stock up on those bobby pins for all the super cute back to school hairstyles!
Shower Caps
This is especially important for college kids. Make sure that you have a shower cap handy at all times. Nothing worse than having to take a shower without one praying that your hair does not get wet.
Satin Scarf
A satin scarf is great for holding that slick puff in place. Or even to protect your hair while you put your clothes on. It’s always great to have one handy, especially for kids and toddlers. It’s a hassle messing up their hair putting shirts on. All your hard work will go to waste. Trust me and invest in a satin tie scarf.
Small Edge Brush
We all know that the edges are super important. I use a toothbrush or small brush to lay my daughter’s edges down. This is a must-have tool for back to school hair.
Detangling Brush
You should always have a detangling tool handy. I love using a good detangling brush to detangle my daughter’s hair. Don’t start the school year without one! It will be your lifesaver.
Storage Containers
After purchasing all of the amazing back to school hair essentials you will need someplace to store all of your hair products. Now is the perfect time to hit up some of your favorite stores for organization containers for all of your hair supplies.
Diffuser
Last but certainly not least a good diffuser is always a good idea to have at your convenience. Let’s face it, sometimes those wash and go’s don’t dry in time for class. Make sure you have a good diffuser handy to keep those curls popping.
With all the amazing essentials, make sure you also have great hair products as well. But we know that back to school time can be expensive so here are 5 budget-friendly hair products under $15 for you as well!
5 Budget Products Under $15
Eco Styler Gel
This is a must-have in your hair product essentials for back to school. It’s great for slicking puffs, and buns, and wash and go’s. I love the Olive Oil Eco Styler.
Leave-In Conditioner
A good leave-in conditioner in your stash will make a difference. You can use leave in to refresh your hair but it is also great for after you’ve washed and deep conditioned your hair. It should be your first step to styling. One of my favorite leave-in conditioners is Jane Carter Revitalizing leave-in Conditioner. It’s super lightweight and moisturizing.
Good Moisturizing Shampoo
You should have a good shampoo in the stash. I love Mielle Organics Babassu shampoo. You may be doing your kids hair a ton this school year, or if you are going back to college changing hairstyles like clothes. It’s good to have a shampoo that helps to remove all buildup.
Deep Conditioner
Make sure you are always keeping the hair deep conditioned. A good deep conditioner to have is Mielle Organics Babassu & Mint Deep Conditioner. It has a good protein and moisture balance that your hair needs.
Edge Control
Edge control is a must-have. I love Creme of Nature Argan Oil Perfect Edges Extra Hold. It will hold your styles in place for the entire day.

Grab some olive oil from the cabinet and put it right in any of these moisturizers for some extra deep conditioning. Happy wash day! Most of us curly girls have always been taught that water is the enemy when it comes to our natural hair. I remember running from the rain with my freshly relaxed hairstyle scared that any drop of water that touched my head would ruin my hairstyle. This may have been true when I was relaxed, but now water is actually my best friend when it comes to my natural hair. Drinking adequate amounts of water will help stimulate hair growth and hydrate your hair and your skin, and keep them thriving.
Water helps hair growth
We should be drinking up to eight glasses of water a day. I know that can be a struggle, especially if you sit at a desk for hours and have to use the restroom every minute. It’s worth it though, because our hair thrives on moisture, making water the best way to moisturize your hair from the inside out. Not drinking enough water can cause dehydration and can affect hair growth, which is something no curly girl wants to hear. Our bodies are composed of 60-80% water so when we don’t consume enough water to help sustain cell health and reproduction, our bodies become dehydrated. You can down hair vitamins and supplements like crazy, but if you are not consuming enough water on a daily basis the cells that promote hair growth will not be able to grow and reproduce and this, in turn, will make your hair very dry and brittle and lead to breakage. So in order to have that glamours glow year-round, it’s a must to drink enough water to keep your hair and skin hydrated!
Use water-based products
I have low porosity hair, meaning that my hair cuticles lay flat and tight, so they tend to resist moisture. It is very hard to penetrate the hair strand, so using water-based products is very important for me to keep my hair moisturized. When looking for hair products you want to look for products that list water as their first ingredient. Water-based products help to penetrate your hair shaft. A few water based moisturizers that I love are Jane Carter Revitalizing Leave-In and Giovanni Direct Leave in Conditioner. Also, remember that oils do not moisturize your hair alone, they seal moisture into the hair, so to properly moisturize you need a water based leave-in and an oil to seal in the moisture. You can also use water alone with a hint of your favorite oil as a daily moisturizer to spruce up your hair daily.

Did you know that temperature plays a crucial role in your wash day? After detangling and conditioning your hair under warm water, turn the dial to cold and complete your final rinse, before gently wringing the hair and styling. Cold water seals the cuticle to keep the moisture in, and makes your hair easier to finger comb during the styling process. Once it’s dry, your hair should be shinier and more defined! There are many theories about rinsing with cold water vs. hot water, so we interviewed Sister Scientist, a cosmetic chemist beauty industry expert to get the science behind using the right temperature for your natural hair.
What does hot water do to hair?
Sister Scientist: “Hot water is more effective in helping to remove dirt, oil, and build-up from the hair, but it can also remove the natural oils your hair produces to stay soft and moisturized. Use hot water in moderation.”
What’s the best temperature for washing your hair?
Sister Scientist: “Start with hot water when shampooing the hair to help open the pores on the scalp to release dirt and oil, and also enhance the studying of your shampoo. Then reduce the temperature of the water to warm on the next shampoo or rinse.”
Does cold water really seal the cuticle?
Sister Scientist: “Contrary to popular belief, there is not enough scientific evidence that supports the theory that cold water seals the hair cuticle. However, this doesn’t mean that the perceived ‘sealing’ benefits are completely false. Cold water may not physically seal the cuticle, but rather, I believe that people are observing the difference between the effects of steam and water on the hair.”
How does steam affect the hair?
Sister Scientist: “Steam often results from using hot water in small spaces (i.e. the shower”>. The distance between water molecules that exists in a gaseous state (i.e. steam”> is much larger than the distance between liquid water molecules. Gas molecules move more freely and are highly compressible, allowing it to diffuse or penetrate the cuticle layer faster. This could give the perception that hot water opens the cuticle, and cooler water seals it. However, all temperatures of water can penetrate and swell the hair shaft, raising the cuticle.”
What’s the best way to smooth your cuticle and prevent frizz?
Sister Scientist: “The best way to ensure the cuticle layer is nice and smooth is to make sure you use a great conditioner, no matter what the temperature of the water is.”
Now that you know the science behind hot water and cold water for your natural hair, which one will you use on your next wash day? Let us know in the comments below.

Transitioning back to your natural hair can be an emotional journey. I began my transition to natural in 2009 and I had no idea that I would go through so many different emotions, from frustration to confusion followed by happiness; I have experienced it all. Transitioning can be overwhelming, but you can get through the process. Here are some of the emotional stages you may face when transitioning to natural.1. Fear
Going natural can be a very scary thing. You may be afraid to see your natural texture, because you don’t know what your curl pattern looks like. Fear of the unknown may try to hold you back, but don’t let it. You may also be afraid of what other people think of your hair. You have been built up the confidence to go natural and now you are unsure. Don’t worry, just take it a day at a time and go with the flow. It’s perfectly ok to be scared and unsure, but if it is what you really want then don’t let fear hold you back.
2. Frustration
Once you actually go natural, you may experience frustration, because you are dealing with two different textures or experience an awkward period. Your hair doesn’t act right in certain styles, and the products that you are trying aren’t working how you want them to. Styling your hair can be a very frustrating process during your transition, but stick in there and keep trying different techniques. Before you know it you will be able to perfect the twist-out with your eyes closed.
3. Experimenting
Going natural is an adventure. Try different products and techniques to see what works best for you. It’s good to try various products, so that you know what works for you and what doesn’t. But don’t go overboard. My tip is if something works, stick with it before trying out something new. Trial and error will be your best friend during your transition.
4. Confusion
Constantly researching different blogs, websites, and videos on the web can be overwhelming. Blogs are so helpful and offer a plethora of amazing advice, but too much information may confuse and overwhelm you. Take your time and do your research. Unfortunately, a quick search on the best way do a twist-out for one natural may not work for you. Not all curls are the same. What may work for one naturalista may not work for you, so try to seek out that naturalista’s hair that may be similar to yours.
5. Confidence
When going natural, confidence is your best friend. No matter what anyone may say about your natural, wear it with confidence. My mom used to always tell me that I needed to perm my hair, because it was “unruly.” Just ignore those types of people and keep going. I always say, “This is the way my hair grows out of my scalp and it’s beautiful!”
6. Acceptance
You may have gone into this thinking that your hair would look like a certain YouTuber that you follow online and may be totally disappointed that your hair just isn’t as you envisioned. You should know that everyone’s hair is different and has different textures. If you begin your journey with this in mind, it will help make your transition to natural a little easier, and hopefully help you reach the stage of acceptance. You may have two totally different curl patterns in your hair, so just accept and embrace your hair and keep going.
What were your emotional experiences transitioning to natural?

1. Product Buildup
This is the number one concern with co-washing. If you only co-wash your hair, you may have lots of product buildup. This will probably mean that you will need to use shampoo and clarify your hair to remove the product buildup. Clarifying your hair is not a bad thing if it is done correctly. You shouldn’t clarify your hair on a regular basis, but it needs to be done occasionally or when necessary to properly remove product buildup.
2. Itchy Scalp
If you tend to have a very sensitive scalp, strictly co-washing may become difficult. If there is still product buildup left in your hair after you wash, it may begin to irritate your scalp. If you find that your scalp is not responding well to co-washing, you may need to stop and clarify your hair. Tea tree oil will help to keep the irritation at bay. It helps to remove dirt on the scalp and creates a favorable environment for a healthy scalp.
3. Oily Roots
Some curly girls who co-wash often find that their hair and roots are excessively oily. Sometimes if you co-wash on a regular basis, it may take time for your hair and scalp to adjust to strictly co-washing. I suggest you observe your scalp to see if there are changes any as your hair gets used to co-washing. If you notice that your hair is not getting better, only co-washing may not be the route for you. You can try switching up between co-washing bi-weekly and using a sulfate-free shampoo to see if the oiliness improves over time.
4. Product Ingredients
If you are a curly girl that co-washes on a regular basis, you may want to avoid non-water soluble silicones. If you only co-wash, silicones will begin to buildup on your hair. The coating of silicones will prevent moisture, good oils, and proteins from entering the hair shaft, in turn leading to drier hair and breakage. If you only co-wash, you need to look for products that only contain water-soluble silicones.
5. Over Moisturizing
Remember that moisture is very important for your curls, but too much moisture isn’t good for your hair. If you co-wash too much and you are not allowing your hair to dry between your wash sessions, you can over moisturize your hair. If you notice that your hair is mushy and limp, you may need to balance your hair with a protein deep conditioner.
Co-washing isn’t a bad thing, but I don’t do it all the time. I feel like strictly co-washing does not completely cleanse my hair, so I do wash with shampoo more often than co-washing. It’s important that you are paying attention to your hair and removing product buildup. Remember just because you see other curly girls swear by a certain routine or product does not mean it will work for you like it worked for them.
Do you exclusively co-wash? Have you encountered any problems with co-washing?

don’t let anyone pressure you to cut your hair until you are ready to do soIt can be helpful to set a deadline to cut your hair when you start your transition to make it a little easier on yourself. Can’t decide on an ideal date? Here are a few signs that it’s time to cut your transitioning hair.
1. Breakage
Your hair is breaking excessively and nothing you do will stop it. There aren’t enough trims, protein treatments, or low maintenance styles to make it cease. As your natural hair continues to grow, the line of demarcation, where your natural hair and your relaxed hair meet, will begin to weaken and that is when breakage occurs frequently. I know that as I got further into my transition, it became really difficult for me to handle two textures without causing significant breakage. With my relaxed hair thinning, styling my hair became increasingly difficult and I knew it was time to cut my hair.
2. You want to try more natural styles
You may be tired of protective styling and rocking rod sets to hide your two textures. You may be ready to try out some new natural hairstyles like a wash and go, twist-out, and Bantu knots. The problem is that these styles begin to look less desirable as your transitioning hair gets longer. In order to get the full experience out of these styles, especially a wash and go, it may be time to let those ends go. You don’t want body and fullness at the roots with tattered and wispy ends.
3. You’re tired of transitioning
You may just be tired of your transitioning journey. It’s not fun if you are frustrated and your patience has run thin. At this point, it may be evident that it’s time to cut your hair and let those ends go. I felt this way towards the end of my transition and I moved the date to cut my hair sooner, because I was fed up and couldn’t take it anymore. I was ready to see my hair fully natural and I wanted to be able to do all the styles I desired without feeling restricted.
4. You feel ready
To all of my long term transitioners out there, my word of advice is to cut your hair when you are ready and not a moment sooner. Don’t let anyone pressure into cutting your hair if you are not ready to do so just yet. Take your time, learn your hair, and you will know when you are ready to take the final step and let those ends go.
How did you know it was time to cut your hair?

One of the questions that I get almost daily is about dry hair. It can be frustrating when you are dealing with dry hair and don’t know what’s causing it. It’s important that we determine first what is making our hair dry and then follow steps to combat those issues. Dry, brittle hair may be the reason you are struggling to retain length, so I have compiled a list five things that make my natural hair dry and solutions to solve those issues.
Not drinking enough water
I can admit that sometimes I am not good at maintaining my water intake. We sometimes forget that water intake is also important to our hair health. In order to maintain healthy hair, we have to make sure our bodies are properly hydrated.
Clarifying too often
Sometimes I get too excited and go overboard with the clarifying shampoo, especially after I take out my protective style. Too much clarifying can lead to dry hair, so this is a no-no. Limit your clarifying shampoo sessions to once per month. Make sure to pre-poo with your favorite oil (I use almond oil”> to help retain moisture and decrease tangles before you shampoo.
Skipping the L.O.C. method
I have noticed that when I don’t properly moisturize my hair, it’s really dry. The L.O.C. (liquid, oil, and cream”> method involves a leave-in, oil, and then sealing moisture in with a cream. Every time I do the L.O.C method my hair thrives. I can tell when I don’t practice this method my hair is dry.
Not using the proper leave-in moisturizers
When I don’t use water based leave-in conditioners, my hair is dry. I have low porosity hair, so I have to use conditioners that will easily penetrate my hair strands. Water based leave-in conditioners are good for those with low porosity hair, as they don’t build up the way creamy moisturizers or leave-in conditioners do. I love to use Jane Carter Revitalizing Leave-in Conditioner to keep my hair moisturized. Using the proper leave-in conditioners for your hair help penetrate my hair.
Not protecting my hair at night
You would think that if this step is missed, then you will be ok. When I don’t protect my hair at night, my hair is in horrible shape the next morning. Protecting your hair at night is a really important step in my natural hair regimen. Make sure that you are keeping your hair protected at night by sleeping on a satin pillowcase or sleeping in a satin bonnet at night. This is how you maintain your style and prevent your cotton bed sheets from absorbing the moisture and oils in your hair.
Once I was able to determine why my hair was dry, it was easier for me to find out the solutions to my problem. If you are experiencing dry hair, you should first take a look at your regimen and lifestyle and then assess how to combat the issues you are facing.
Is your natural hair dry? What are you doing to combat the issue?

Now that the weather is changing, it is a good time to take a look at what is working in your regimen and what’s not. With the colder months comes the dry air which also can make your hair super dry. If you haven’t added a steam treatment to your regimen now is the perfect time and here is why.
Steaming Your Hair Will Help With Product Absorption
Do you have low-porosity hair? If you do, adding a steam treatment to your regimen is a great way to help hydrating products penetrate your hair strands. This will improve the moisture balance in your hair. Steaming helps to open up the cuticle layer of your hair and will make it easier for the products you use to deposit into your strands. This is important because you will also get more out of your deep conditioning treatments with steaming.
Steaming Helps Reduce Breakage
Adding a steam treatment to your regimen will help prevent breakage. When you steam your hair, you help your hair to retain the moisture in your hair. The moisture is locked in and in turn helps reduce breakage. Dry and brittle hair breaks but using a steam treatment you will retain moisture more.
Steaming Adds Strength To Your Hair
A major benefit of steaming your hair on a consistent basis is that it helps to add strength to your hair. Your hair will become more elastic and healthier when you use steam treatments.
Steaming Provides Improved Elasticity
By incorporating a steam treatment into your hair care regimen it will provide your hair with more elasticity. If you are transitioning, steaming can really help to benefit you because your hair has two textures and is prone to breakage at the line of demarcation.
Steaming Improves Scalp Health
Are you keeping your scalp healthy? Adding a steam treatment to your regimen also helps to improve scalp health. Steaming your hair and scalp during can help to unclog pores. This will help to encourage hair growth. Steaming your hair is beneficial because it also helps break up the buildup on your scalp. Steaming also helps stimulate blood flow to your scalp which helps with hair growth.
Steamers To Check Out
If you are looking for a great steamer you can always search Amazon for table top steamers. Also Q-Redew has an amazing handheld steamer that is super convenient!

Length retention is something that many naturals strive for. Your hair is always growing even if you think it’s not. Retaining length is all about how you care for your hair. Here are some length retention tips for natural hair that you can incorporate into your hair care regimen to help you.
- Dry your hair with a T-Shirt. Drying your hair with a towel can cause breakage. Using a T-shirt helps reduce the friction that towels may cause to your hair.
- Keep your hair moisturized. I know this is probably something that you hear all the time when it comes to your hair. Use the LOC or LCO method to help you keep your hair moisturized, pre-poo and also do hot oil treatments.
- Protect your hair while you sleep. Cotton pillowcases will rob your hair of moisture. It’s best to sleep in a satin bonnet or scarf or sleep on a satin pillowcase to protect your hair at night.
- Treat your scalp. Healthy hair growth starts with a healthy scalp. When you shampoo your hair make sure to massage your scalp and remove all the debris from your hair. Also when you massage your scalp it helps to stimulate hair growth.
- Trim your ends. Trimming your ends is very important in helping your hair grow and flourish. The only way to get rid of split ends is to remove them.
- Wear protective styles. The more you put your hair up and away and don’t manipulate it too much it will flourish! Tuck your ends away for a few and watch your hair retain length.
- Detangle with care. I know sometimes we want to rush through wash day but when you are detangling that is not an option. Take your time when you are detangling your hair. If you can detangle with your fingers, it will help to reduce breakage.
- Don’t wear tight ponytails. I am a ponytail girl but wearing your hair too tight while in ponytails can cause breakage. This goes for buns too. Make sure that when you create these types of styles that you keep the ponytail on the looser side.
- Be gentle with your ends. Your ends are the oldest part of your hair. Make sure you are treating them with proper care.
- Drink Water. Healthy hair starts from the inside out.
Be patient, your hair is growing even if you think it’s not.
