Product Application Tips: From Wavy to Coily

You bought the hottest new styling product, and you’re excited about trying it. Everyone is raving about it. But it just isn’t working for you. Your waves are flat, your curls are frizzy, and your coils don’t pop.

With waves, curls, and coils, the type of product, the amount, and how you apply it can make all the difference between a good hair day—frizz-free, defined curls and waves—and a bad one.

We asked curl stylists Latoya Moore (@curlqueen_latoya), DevaCurl stylist, and April Kayganich (@_thehalfrican) for their top tips for wavy, curly, and coily hair.

Product Application Tips: From Wavy to Coily

“It’s important to have the right product and application method for your hair texture,” says Moore

Some top tips include:

  1. Even distribution: Proper application ensures that the product is evenly distributed throughout your hair, which helps achieve a consistent style. Uneven application can result in patches of hair that look different from the rest, leading to an unpolished appearance.

General Tips for All Texture Types:

  1. Start with Clean, Wet Hair:
    • Apply products to clean, damp hair for better absorption and even distribution.
  2. Sectioning:
    • Divide your hair into manageable sections to ensure the product reaches every strand.
  3. Use the Right Amount:
    • Start with a small amount and add more if needed to avoid overloading the hair with the product.
  4. Distribute Evenly:
    • Use your fingers, a wide-tooth comb, or a Denman brush to distribute the product evenly.
  5. Layering Products:
    • Apply products in layers (leave-in conditioner, cream, gel) to provide moisture, definition, and hold.

Tips for Wavy Hair (2A, 2B, 2C)

  1. Lightweight Products:
    • Use light gels or mousses to enhance waves without weighing them down. Avoid heavy creams and oils.
  2. Application Technique:
    • Scrunching: Apply products to damp hair and scrunch upwards to encourage wave formation.
    • Focus on Roots and Ends: Apply a small amount of product at the roots for volume and at the ends for definition.
    • Root Lift: Apply a small amount of product to the roots for volume and avoid flattening the crown.
    • Diffuse or Air Dry: Use a diffuser attachment on your blow dryer to dry waves without disrupting the pattern or let your hair air dry.
Product Application Tips: From Wavy to Coily

“A good surf spray is great for styling hair quickly while creating the perfectly tousled look,” says April Kayganich (@_thehalfrican).

Kayganich loves  Hairstory’s Undressed. “Spritz all over damp hair generously and then scrunch or diffuse. Another of her favorites is I Create Lift Volumizing Foam from Innersense

“I love to scrunch this in wavy hair to apply and then diffuse on a low setting,” says Kayganich.

Product Application Tips: From Wavy to Coily

Moore loves DevaCurl SuperMousse and DevaCurl CurlHeights Cream Volume + Body Boost Cream. She uses a quarter-sized amount of mousse and a dime-sized amount of cream.

“Apply the mousse to damp hair by scrunching upwards from ends to roots,” says Moore. “Follow up by applying cream to the hair and smoothing it over the hair while scrunching to define waves.”

Tips for Curly Hair (3A, 3B, 3C)

Product Application Tips: From Wavy to Coily
  1. Moisturizing Products: Use creams, leave-in conditioners, and gels that provide moisture and hold.
  2. Application Technique: Apply products while the hair is soaking wet to lock in moisture. Use the “praying hands” method to smooth the product along the hair length, then scrunch to enhance curl definition.
  3. Layering Products: Layer a leave-in conditioner with a curl cream and a gel to provide hydration and hold.
  4. Styling Methods:
    • Praying Hands Method: Apply the product by smoothing it along the hair length with the praying hands method, then scrunch to enhance curl definition.
    • Rake and Shake: Rake the product through your hair with your fingers and then gently shake the curls to set their natural pattern.
    • Plopping: After applying products, use a microfiber towel or cotton T-shirt to plop your hair, which helps to define curls and reduce frizz.

“A good cream can go a long way,” says Kayganich. “ Hairstory Hair Balm is her go-to for Type 3 curls. “ It’s very moisturizing to help when your hair feels dry from being in a pool or dipping in the ocean. I like to rake or scrunch this product into the hair.”

Product Application Tips: From Wavy to Coily

Kayganich also likes The Doux Crazy Sexy Curl  Honey Setting Foam. Pump some foam into your hands, rake through detangled hair or use the Black Detangler Brush by Felicia Leatherwood to apply your product to already detangled hair.

“If you want to ensure maximum volume, work in sections and brush from under the section,” says Kayganich.

Moore likes to cocktail products. She mixes a dime-sized dollop of DevaCurl Styling Cream with a quarter-sized amount of DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel on curly hair.

“Apply cream to wet hair in small sections and follow up by gliding gel over hair while the head is flipped forward and scrunching hair upwards to define curls.

Keishahirih’s favorite technique for her Type 3 curls using Innersense Organic Beauty – Natural Quiet Calm Curl Control and Pattern Beauty Strong Hold Gel.

Tips for Coily/Kinky Hair (4A, 4B, 4C)

  1. Rich, Moisturizing Products: Use thick creams, butters, and oils to provide intense moisture and reduce shrinkage.
  2. Product Application: Use a dime-sized amount of Plumping Primer, applying it in small subsections on soaking wet hair. Follow up with a quarter-sized amount of Ultra gel in small subsections to achieve hydrating and defining coils. Flip the head forward and slightly shake to remove excess water.
  3. Styling Techniques:
  • Finger Detangling: Detangle your hair with your fingers while applying products to minimize breakage and ensure even distribution.
  • Twist or Braid: Twist or braid sections of your hair after applying the product to define curls and reduce shrinkage.
  • Stretching Techniques: Use banding, African threading, or Bantu knots to stretch your hair and reduce shrinkage while it dries.
  • LOC or LCO Method: Apply products in the order of Liquid (leave-in conditioner), Oil, and Cream, or Liquid, Cream, and Oil to lock in moisture.
Product Application Tips: From Wavy to Coily

I recommend Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curl Magic Curl Stimulator to her coily clients.

“This gel is creamlike due to aloe vera being the main ingredient, so most people can get away with using this alone,” says Kayganich. “A little bit goes a long way (too much, and you’ll feel a little sticky). Remember to emulsify the product in your hands before applying. Make sure your hair is soaking wet. You can use clips to work in sections to work quickly and efficiently.”

Kayganich recommends starting from the bottom and working your way up. Rake a small amount through detangled, really wet hair to create definition throughout. Continue through each section, then air dry or hover diffuse.

Product Application Tips: From Wavy to Coily

She also likes Innersense Organic Beauty – Natural I Create Shine Glossing Serum, a lightweight serum that adds shine and definition. She uses this to soak wet hair using a raking motion with both of her hands and then she’ll air dry or diffuse.

Product Application Tips: From Wavy to Coily

Moore mixes DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel with DevaCurl Plumping Primer using a dime-sized method and a quarter- sized amount of the gel. She applies it in small subsections. For best results, she suggests using a diffuser or a hooded dryer.

When I think of the leading curl pioneers – the people who changed how we care for and think about our texture –  Lorraine Massey is high on that list.

When I met her more than two decades ago, I felt like I met a kindred spirit. The vivacious and passionate stylist championed the beauty and uniqueness of natural curls, encouraging people to embrace and celebrate their natural curl pattern at a time when straight hair was seen as the ideal of beauty.

She helped develop the DevaCut, a revolutionary dry-cutting technique that involves cutting curls in their natural state, creating a personalized, flattering shape. She trained thousands of stylists around the world.

One of her biggest contributions is the creation of the Curly Girl Method. It’s hard to remember when CG wasn’t a part of our curly lexicon. In her book “Curly Girl: The Handbook” –  a best-selling book that is a bible for many people, Curly Girls – she outlines the CG philosophy of enhancing and maintaining curly hair’s natural texture and health.

Massey has had a lasting impact on the curly hair community through her efforts, helping many people feel more confident and informed about their natural hair.

Curly Girl Method Founder Lorraine Massey, Talks About The Evolution of a Regimen That Changed Hair Culture

I had the opportunity to catch up with Massey. She reflected on her journey, how the CG method she created has evolved over the past decade for different hair types, and the creation of her CurlyWorld haircare brand.

Michelle: Can you please share your curl journey?

Lorraine: Growing up, I often felt like an outsider because of my curly hair. In a world that favored straight hair, I spent many years miserable. I would dislike my curls so much that I would run home at lunchtime from school and put on a balaclava, thinking that would flatten its spirit. It wasn’t until my late teens that I began questioning why I was trying so hard to make it something it wasn’t.

I was in Hong Kong then, and a hairstylist friend saw how miserable I was and said, “Why don’t you just wash it with some conditioner sometimes?” I wish I could thank him because that was the game changer for the rest of my life. This one ingredient change that eliminated the detergent part of cleansing marked the beginning of my journey to embrace my natural curls. It was a liberating and transformative experience to accept and love my curly hair as it is finally.

I never thought that what once felt like the bane of my existence would become the vein of my existence. Now, I celebrate my curls and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of other “Curlies” who feel the same way I do.

Michelle: How did you create the CG method?

Lorraine: As a stylist, I hated blow-drying everyone’s hair to mold them into a one-size-fits-all box. I often wondered why I liked my clients’ hair more when they arrived than when they left. I loved how their natural curls and waves made them look softer and more like themselves. I saw blowouts on Curly Girls akin to wearing a dress that doesn’t fit properly.

It became painful for me to see beautiful hair become brittle and dry due to being blow-fried. I almost left my craft; it felt like glorified laundering to me. I trained myself to deliver the best blowouts—anyone can, really; there isn’t much art in that— but since I decided to stop, I haven’t done a blowout in over 30 years.

The Curly Girl Method evolved from my own experiences with my hair. I once had a terrible haircut where, when it dried, one side was up to my chin, and the other side just skimmed my shoulders. When I asked the stylist why it was shorter on one side, he said, “When your hair is wet, it is even.”

After that haircut, I vowed no one would ever make me feel that ugly again. It took me almost seven years to get my hair to a length where I felt comfortable. The curls were growing and self-organizing in their natural state. I trimmed each curl by curl where they lay, one at a time, and oxygenated the very ends so they could grow healthily.

I learned over time, with my hair and my trusted clients, that a unique, different, and specific approach was needed to care for curly hair effectively. Once I could train my clients with a consistent lifestyle approach from shower to style that got them to stop the shampoo diet of sodium or sulfate, we all experienced an undeniably massive shift from hating our curls to loving them. It began a local word-of-mouth phenomenon as my clients shared their experiences with friends, and the movement multiplied.

Michelle: What exactly is the Curly Girl Method?

Lorraine: The Curly Girl Method is fundamentally quite simple.  It is as much about what you DON’T do to avoid harming your curls (like using sulfates, sodium, silicones, “blowfryers,”  hot irons, and brushes ) as it is about ensuring that the tools and products you DO use with the methodology contain ONLY healthy ingredients that will protect, nourish and cultivate beautiful curls.  The CG method can enable gentle cleansing, conditioning, and styling techniques tailored for curly hair when combined with the right products.

Michelle: How does it feel to see the Curly Girl Method become such a game-changer in the industry?

Lorraine:  It’s been fascinating. The Curly Girl Method has grown so significantly that it now has a life of its own. As noted previously, Twenty-plus years later, the good news is that millions of curlies have become aware that there is now a powerful and beautiful alternative to straightening their curls. That means that more and more people are embracing their natural curls, coils, and waves and celebrating their individuality rather than trying to conform to the same cookie-cutter mold.

The challenge for curlies out there is still wading through myriad offerings from various manufacturers, pundits, and influencers as they try to find the best products to maximize the benefits of the Curly Girl Method.

I know it is working because I have seen it transform the lives of countless people by helping them embrace and celebrate their natural curls, coils, and waves and they pass it on to others.

The Ingredients are really important, and any regulations that protect consumers by ensuring transparency about ingredients and sourcing will be very helpful. I’m looking forward to that.

Michelle: Tell us about how you developed the CurlyWorld product line. You have a knack for coming up with fun product names!

Lorraine:  Developing CurlyWorld products took a long time. For instance, our newest gel has taken over two years to develop. Fortunately, I have a salon where I can test products before finalizing them.

Being a hairdresser and still working behind the chair gives me firsthand experience. It’s like being in the truffles—I can directly observe how the products perform on my clients and on myself and how the curls react to the ingredients. This is called cautionary principles—making sure something works in the most effective and simplistic way.

Curly Girl Method Founder Lorraine Massey, Talks About The Evolution of a Regimen That Changed Hair Culture

I continue to love and learn from conversations with my curly clients about their curl challenges and curl liberation stories, which is why I finally decided to start a podcast to share some of those valuable stories with others. The podcast is called “If Your Curls Could Talk” and will be coming out later this year. The product line includes I Mist You, Sham-Free, Terms and Conditions, Leave In Lover and With or Without Hue.

Curly Girl Method Founder Lorraine Massey, Talks About The Evolution of a Regimen That Changed Hair Culture

Regarding our product names, I am dyslexic and know I’m not the only one. This means I read words in a way that is a bit upside down and backward and quite slowly. Because of this, I sometimes sound out names or see them split up, revealing double meanings quickly. For example, I once believed that “psychological” contained the word curl “psycurlogical.”

The product line includes the following: I honestly never stop trying to improve the formulas.

Michelle: Can you share some wavy, curly, and coily texture tips?

Lorraine:  When it comes to our hair, meeting someone for the first time is like being a paleontologist: the hair has a history. You have to understand where it has come from and what has been done to it before knowing where it’s going. Many variables in a curl’s lifespan affect its current condition.

But in general, one certainty that I have observed for every curl type, including wavy hair, is that the story begins and ends with hydration. Regarding different curl types, the key is the amount of hydration you administer. Coily hair often requires more hydration, while wavy hair requires less. Still, Hydration is the foundation for healthy hair, regardless of texture.

Next, avoid overloading your hair with too many products. Otherwise, you will never understand which ones are really working for you. Avoid any products that attach to and build up on the hair.  Instead – look for water-soluble options. These allow hair to breathe and interact with the atmosphere rather than blocking and clogging it.

I truly believe that curls and nature are not as complicated as they seem. Frizz is still seen as a big problem that needs to be tamed or eradicated, but understanding its biochemical structure reveals that it’s just a natural part of curly hair. There is no “cure” for frizz— but if you keep your hair hydrated and conditioned (and avoid weighing it down with silicones), your curls can look beautiful for life, regardless of age.

Also, cleanse your hair because it’s time for a refreshing, hydrating cleanse, not because it feels terrible and weighed down with too much product residue.

Once you understand and respect your own hair, treat it kindly, avoid damaging it, and allow it to be free, you won’t be reaching for hair growth remedies. The problem is that the first thing we often put on our hair can act like a weed killer instead of fertilizer.

Michelle: How have you seen the curly world change over 25 years?

Lorraine:  The biggest takeaway is the incredible shift in how curly hair is perceived and celebrated. Especially after COVID-19, when blowout bars and salons were closed, women and men started to let their curls unfurl and be free. As global warming becomes a more pressing, maintaining unnaturally straight hair in extreme and changing weather conditions will be increasingly challenging.

Recent revelations about the links between chemical straightening and cancer have also pushed people to embrace their natural hair. I believe there will be an even greater shift towards accepting natural hair because people will have no choice. Curls are free and require no plug-ins.

When I first started as a shampoo girl in Leicester, there was a significant lack of knowledge, resources, and acceptance for curly hair. Today, there’s a thriving community and a wealth of information available.

It’s heartening to see how the craft of hairdressing has evolved to be more inclusive and supportive of naturally curly, coily, and wavy hair. However, you still have to sift through a lot of “seemingly Curly Girl-approved” noise. The Curly Girl Method’s simple three-step process—cleanse, condition, and style—is being amplified, and some influencers are pushing overly complicated versions that can sometimes be counterproductive rather than helpful.

Remember, it’s 40 percent product. The rest is your care and knowledge of your own glorious curls. Ultimately, each curl needs to find the routine, products, and journey that works best for them since they live with their hair every day.

It’s not always what you do. It’s what you don’t do that makes a difference. The journey is ultimately about more than just curls; it is about self-acceptance, empowerment, and embracing your natural beauty.

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

If you’ve been trying curly hair product recommendations for your hair type and nothing seems to be working, chances are you’re trying the wrong kinds of curly hair products. Curl pattern is only one part of the hair type equation; your hair also has a specific porosity, density, length, and width.

In terms of width, your hair width can be either coarse, medium, or fine. Fine hair strands have a small circumference and, as a result, are more prone to breakage and lack the full volume that coarse hair has. We scoured the web to find top product picks for adding volume to limp curls that are lacking in body, and here’s what we came up with!

Products for Fine Hair

1. OUAI Fine Shampoo

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“This clarifying shampoo is the best shampoo ever! I have really hard water in my area and some of my products build up on my hair, so I decided to try this shampoo and WOW. You only need a dime-sized amount to completely clean and it sure does the trick! This shampoo cleaned my hair without stripping it and also gave my limp, lifeless, stringy hair a more defined curl pattern. Awesome product! The price can’t be beat! I love the OUAI products!”

2. Cake Beauty Moisturizing Shampoo

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“A good daily shampoo. Nice scent. Good lather. Didn’t make my hair feel stripped.”

3. DevaCurl No-Poo Original

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“Love it. I have natural blonde cherub curls that are dry and fine. This is gentle enough for my hair, and it conditions well. Since my hair is so fine, One Condition can be too heavy. I can “finger comb” my hair using No Poo. It has a very “clean” smell that some complained about. I don’t notice it after rinsing my hair. But I wasn’t offended by the scent to start with. Don’t let the price scare you away, the 12 oz lasts me 5-6 months. I rarely need to use a “low poo.”

4. Botanika Beauty The Mendor

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“Great for my fine curls that have red and blond streaks. The little extra protein before my other styling products really helps with frizz on the ends.”

5. Devacurl One Condition

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“PERFECT for the 2a/2b/2c curl types. Love the scent. Has good slip but is not thick and does not weigh my curls down. I always apply, rack my fingers thh my hair to get rid of loose hairs and undo any knots, scrunch, and leave it in for 5 minutes or so just so my hair gets a good “drink” every day, and then I rinse it out about 90-95% and follow with my other styling products.”

6. DAE Signature Conditioner

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“GREAT product. I have 3c with some 3b, and I’m on the CG method. It’s so light, I can leave it in and get great condition without it weighing down my curls. It is a FABULOUS detangler. Nice price too!”

7. Verb Volume Shampoo

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“I have thin hair, a little wavy, but really thin. I was suggested this product by someone in a hair salon in Beverly Hills on vacation. NaturallyCurly was the best place for me to buy it and all the fun ‘extras’ I get with my order immediately go to my grand-daughter who is naturally curly. We all love this product!”

8. Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper Slip 30-Second Detangler

“The Slip Detangler is just like the Silk Leave-In … but a ‘lighter’ version (even though the Leave-In is not heavy at all). My friend’s mom (she’s a hair stylist)recommended it for me. It works WELL with Curl Keeper (never tried it on its own). I guess this product is good for kids because it’s a lot lighter than all the other products, and it comes in a spray nozzle, so it’s easy to use too.”

9. Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“I loved it. Great cleaning my scalp and my scalp didn’t itch during the process or right after. My hair didn’t feel weighed down, and I actually felt my hair was clean. Will be using on a regular basis.”

10. Matrix Amplify Volumizing Shampoo

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

Matrix Total Results Amplify Shampoo is for fine, limp hair. It cleanses as it adds lightweight volume with continuous lifting power. Instant all-over body for thicker-looking hair.

11. Maui Moisture Frizz-Free + Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioning Mist

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“I use this on top of Devacurl Light Defining Gel just to give it a little extra oomph. I spread a quarter-size amount throughout my hair after applying the gel and it does the trick! It gives me more definition without going overboard.”

12. Jessicurl Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner

“[I have] 3b/3c fine, thin hair in Hawaii. I love love love this product. I got very pretty spiral curls with this. I only used a dime-size — if that — in each section of my hair (parted hair in six sections). I need a product that would not make my curls stringy or too puffy because I have thin very fine hair. I paired this with Redken Spring Mousse, a dime size or less of recoil, a dime-size or less of Confident Coils, and half a pump of TIGI Curls Rock Amplifier. It’s very soft. Love love and will buy again.”

13. All About Curls High Definition Gel | Crunchless Ultra Hold

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“An excellent gel! It works for me as well as BRHG (Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee) but without the kind of hard hat feel. It is a more natural feel. It holds my very hard to hold curls and waves very well. It does have a water soluble silicone and I have not had a problem with it to date. It does not dry out my hair but if you are protein sensitive I recommend another gel as this one has LOTS and LOTS of protein!”

14. milk_shake Volume Solution Styling

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“I have thin straight hair…this is the only spray that works w/o weighing down my hair. It really does give it volume. Takes a little bit of time to figure out just the right amount but once you do I’m sure you will like it too.”

15. RIZOS CURLS CURL DEF MOUSSE

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“I have fine hair , and a lot of it, my curls range from 2a-3a and can be easily weighed down by most products. However, my hair seems to love this stuff! It is a little different from most products and all I do to get it to work for me is put a small amount in my palm and rub my hands together until it foams and then scrunch it into my hair.”

16. Paul Mitchell Ultimate Wave Lightweight Hair Gel

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“I have used this gel for years and years. (I shudder to think of what my hair would be like without it.) I have thick, but fine, hair that wants to be flat…Let the gel dry on your hair, and you will have loads of body and texture until you wash your hair again.”

17. AG Mousse-Gel

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“This product works really well on my daughter’s 2a-b hair. The results last for days. It doesn’t weigh her hair down and gives her soft waves and loose curls. For those curlies or wavies that get weighed down easily, I think this is a good product. It is also quite forgiving. If you use too much, you still get great results. It has very little crunch.”

18. EDEN BodyWorks Lavender Aloe Hydrating Refresher Spray

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“This is the best mid-day-fixer-upper I’ve tried. It really works. Even works on bed hair. Just spray it on dry hair and it tames frizzies and reforms curls. I really like it.”

19. L’ANGE HAIR Sea Salt Texturizing Spray

20 Products for Fine Curly Hair

“I love this spray for 2nd, 3rd and 4th day hair on my 2a waves/curls. It has great curl boosting/reviving power. I only need about 6 sprays and then scrunch…I end up with good body and great curls. Love it!”

20. Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Hair Conditioner

“Top of the line. For my fine 3b hair, this product is one of my go-tos. Love it.”

The Hottest Dry Shampoos that Get the Job Done

Who needs a shower when you have magic in a can? Dry shampoos are one of the hottest categories in haircare right now, with products available for every texture type, hair color, and budget.

These water-free cleansers refresh hair and absorb excess oil, extending the time between shampoos. They are perfect for people on the go, providing a way to freshen up anytime, anywhere. Because traditional shampoo requires less frequent washing, dry shampoos help maintain the vibrancy of those who color their hair.

They can also provide styling benefits by adding texture and volume.

Dry Shampoo 101

Dry shampoos were developed in Asia in the late 15th century, using powdered clay and rice starch to absorb excess oil from the hair. Minipoo was introduced in the 1940s.

But it was a product called Psssst! that put the dry shampoo category on the map. It was launched in the 1950s and became popular in the 1970s. A reformulated version of Psssst! It is still available.

Washing hair less frequently with water and traditional shampoo can help prolong the vibrancy of dyed or treated hair colors, making dry shampoo a popular choice for maintaining salon results.

Using Dry Shampoo

To get the best results, dry shampoos should be used in the following way:

  1. Part your hair and use your fingers or a comb to create sections in your hair, focusing on areas where it tends to get oily or greasy, such as the roots.
  2. Massage into the scalp, using your fingertips to gently massage the dry shampoo into your scalp and roots. This helps distribute the product and absorbs excess oil.
  3. Allow the dry shampoo to sit on your hair for a couple of minutes to absorb oil and refresh your hair.
  4.  If your hair still feels oily or greasy, you can repeat the process in additional sections or as necessary until you achieve the desired level of freshness.
  5. Applied too much? Use a blowdryer to get rid of excess product.

Dry shampoos are now available in various forms. Aerosol sprays and mists are convenient for quick application and offer even distribution, while powders are great for targeting specific areas and adding volume. Foams provide a virtually weightless option ideal for those with fine hair. Many are available in formulas for light or dark hair. There are even overnight dry shampoos that work while you sleep.

12  DIY Recipes to Make at Home

Do you have an avocado, yogurt, or honey? Or maybe some eggs and aloe vera gel? Whether you need a leave-in conditioner or a styling product, you can probably whip them up in your kitchen.

Crafting your hair products can have several benefits, including the ability to customize your formulations to meet the needs of your curls and coils. It also enables you to avoid the chemicals found in many products. By using products you already have – like eggs and yogurt – you can save money while still getting the benefits of fancy products. And it can be fun to mix up products at home.

12  DIY Recipes to Make at Home

Some of the most popular ingredients used for DIY products:

  • Coconut Oil: Great for moisturizing and conditioning hair. It can be used as a hair mask or added to homemade hair products for added hydration.
  • Olive Oil: Similar to coconut oil, olive oil is moisturizing and can help improve the condition of dry or damaged hair.
  • Honey: is a natural humectant, which means it helps attract and retain moisture in the hair. It can be added to homemade hair masks or used as a conditioning treatment on its own.
  • Avocado: Rich in vitamins and healthy fats, avocado can help nourish and strengthen hair. It can be mashed and used in hair masks or mixed with other ingredients to create a conditioning treatment.
  • Aloe Vera: Soothes the scalp and promotes hair growth. It can be used as a leave-in conditioner or mixed with other ingredients to create a hydrating hair mask.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Helps to clarify the hair and scalp, removing buildup and balancing the pH level of the scalp. It can be diluted with water and used as a rinse after shampooing.
  • Egg: Rich in protein and vitamins, eggs can help strengthen hair and add shine. They can be beaten and applied to the hair as a mask.
  • Yogurt: Contains lactic acid, which helps to cleanse the scalp and promote healthy hair growth. It can be used as a conditioner or mixed with other ingredients to create a nourishing hair mask.
  • Essential Oils: Many essential oils have benefits for hair health, such as promoting growth, reducing dandruff, or adding fragrance. Popular options include lavender, rosemary, peppermint, and tea tree oil.
  • Herbs: Certain herbs, such as rosemary, nettle, and chamomile, can be infused into oils or added to homemade hair products to provide additional benefits for the hair and scalp.

Because they’re fresh and free from preservatives, you’ll probably want to use your concoctions right away. Yogurt and aloe vera probably won’t smell as nice as store-bought products. And you may want to patch-test them to make sure you’re not allergic to the ingredients.

However, the benefits can outweigh any of these drawbacks. So get out of your mixing bowl! Here are some tried-and-true faves.

The Origins of BOB: More Valuable Now than Ever!

It’s our favorite time of year! Voting is open for the 2024 Best of the Best Awards. We can’t wait to discover which brands will rise to the top!

It’s hard for most people to fathom what the curl landscape looked like two decades ago. The store had no Curl or Texture sections from which to choose. So curly girls were desperate to find products that would work.

Our tiny NaturallyCurly team wanted to find a way to help.  What if we could harness our incredible, dynamic community to help identify some standout product? We already had a community of hundreds of thousands of regular visitors who were posting on CurlTalk.

In 2006, Best of the Best was born.

Celebrating Curly, Coily, and Wavy Products

Thus, in 2006, we introduced the NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Awards, a celebration of products that truly understood and catered to textured hair across roughly a dozen essential categories.

With the technology available at the time—or lack thereof—it was pretty unsophisticated. But our passionate community didn’t need a fancy survey. We got hundreds of responses, and I tallied the votes on a Word doc, a time-consuming process.

Most of the winners were products not developed for curly girls that were discovered during the desperate quest to find products that worked for their curls, coils and waves. They included products like Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam and Elucence Moisture Benefits Shampoo.

Then, as more curl products came on the market, the Best of the Best Awards celebrated them. They included products like Jessicurl Rockin’ Ringlets, Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding, and Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade.

The Origins of BOB: More Valuable Now than Ever!

Over the years, the process has become more sophisticated. We automated it with an online survey, added categories, and named winners by texture type. What was once barely a dozen winners became dozens of winners as new product types emerged, whether cream gels or curl puddings.

Getting Recognition From Brands In Our Market

NaturallyCurly’s Best of the Best Awards have become coveted marks of excellence, adorning product packaging and advertisements alike. When they win, they release press releases. Some brands have even launched campaigns centered on their NaturallyCurly Best of the Best victories.

The Origins of BOB: More Valuable Now than Ever!

From the entire Curl Keeper team, we want to thank you! “♥️To see the other 2023 winners, read the full article at Best of the Best Awards 2023.”

Inspiring Future Beauty Awards

NaturallyCurly’s Best of the Best awards have significantly impacted other publications. When NaturallyCurly launched, Allure’s Best in Beauty awards didn’t include one product for curls, coils, or waves. Not one.

The 2023 Allure awards included Best Shampoo and Conditioner For Curly Hair, Best Curl Styler, Best Wave Enhancer, Best Edge Styler, Best Twisting Cream and Best Frizz Smoother awards. Glamour Magazine now features “The Best Curly and Coily Hair Products of 2023.

Although other publications include these products, NaturallyCurly is laser-focused on this category, and every NaturallyCurly voter has textured hair.

NaturallyCurly’s Best of the Best Awards will continue to serve as a pivotal mark of discovery, celebration, and advocacy within the textured-hair community. The journey from tallying votes on a Word doc to where we stand today vividly illustrates progress, passion, and the power of community.

The legacy and continued success of the NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Awards remind us all that when we come together for a common cause, the impact can be monumental. Here’s to many more years of celebrating the best in curly hair care, to the innovations yet to come, and to a community that grows stronger and more vibrant with each passing year.

If you haven’t gotten a chance, cast your VOTE today!

Hairstory New Wash Rich

This cleansing creme works WONDERS. I call it a “clenditioner”, but I love it because the rich formula is ultra-moisturizing and great for curls and coils. It speeds up your detangling by helping to soften the hair, and you only need this ONE product.  It’s not shampoo, and you don’t condition it afterward. Make sure to apply to soaking wet hair; apply at your mid to ends first, then apply some more product at the roots. Scrub your scalp all over really well then let the New Wash sit for at least 5 minutes. The longer it sits, the cleaner your scalp gets and the more conditioned your ends get.  Make sure to rinse it out really well! Style as usual.

Innersense Hair Love Prep Spray

13 Products That Made Us Fall in Love With Our Hair

I LOVE this priming hair spray. It has heat protection, UV protection and protein!  It acts in the way face primer for makeup works, to help your products “stick” and last longer. This should be applied first, before any other product and then I finger comb or use a wide tooth comb to distribute it throughout the hair. Another bonus is that it smells SO good and will help prolong your style!

Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Gel Strong Hold

13 Products That Made Us Fall in Love With Our Hair

This is my go-to gel. Some curls love humidity and some don’t. I am not one of those people, ha! My curls lose definition when it is really humid, so I need a gel that is going to help maintain my style on humid days, but also not build up on my hair. I always apply this at the very end of my routine since gel is a higher hold product. I also have to remind my clients that a little bit goes a long way. I want hair to be touchable and not feel crispy so if that’s what you want too, this is the gel for you!

It’s a 10 Miracle Coily Mask

No matter how dry my hair this mask instantly makes my hair feel moisturized and soft. The slip makes detangling easy as well.

Innersense I Create Hold Gel

I get definition without compromising volume. I love pairing this with a volume mousse.  I use a hair pick during my drying/diffusing to prevent gelled roots from getting stuck to my scalp. It’s a great way to encourage volume without causing frizz. I tend to be heavy-handed with product, so I’ve started ending my wash-n-gos with a cold mist of water. Ending with scrunching.

Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Gel Stronger Hold

13 Products That Made Us Fall in Love With Our Hair

The Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Stronger Hold Gel is my favorite styler because it lasts for days with minimal refreshing needed. It’s packed with humidity-blocking, moisturizing ingredients and has a slippery thin consistency that my hair loves.

Section clean, damp hair and apply it liberally. I use a lot and evenly coat from root to tip.

  • Brush style and/or finger coil to define curls.
  • Scrunch with a hair towel
  • Glaze in another light layer of gel on top
  • Diffuse
  • Just use a little water to reactivate the gel on refresh days. No need to add more with this gel!

Briogeo Don’t Despair Repair Deep Conditioning Masks

13 Products That Made Us Fall in Love With Our Hair

It’s packed with proteins to strengthen damaged hair and is highly moisturizing. It’s one of the few deep conditioners that is actually lightweight and won’t weigh down your hair. Use it once per week for damaged and weak hair, rotate with a protein-free mask, and scrunch/pulse it in to increase absorption. For those with low-porosity hair, you can add light heat such as with a Hot Head cap.

Camille Rose Rosemary Water Daily Strengthening Mist

13 Products That Made Us Fall in Love With Our Hair

This is a fave for me and lots of curlies for good reason! It’s truly a multi-purposeful product that’s great for refreshing your hair mid-week & alleviating dry or itchy scalp. Plus, it had a nice fresh scent.

My favorite styling product that I love is Almond Jai! It’s rich, creamy hair butter that leaves my hair soft, hydrated & defined, plus it even has a light hold to combat frizz. What I love most is the thick consistency so a little goes a long way. It’s definitely a one & done product that allows me to style my hair effortlessly.

Emergencia Deep Intense Hair Treatment

13 Products That Made Us Fall in Love With Our Hair

I almost don’t want to share this because I’m scared it’ll go mainstream and get ridiculously priced the problem with most hair masks is I have too much hair to rationalize the price for how quickly I’ll go through a tub. But for someone who’s been coloring my hair for so long, nothing beats the dryness and frizz like this product. I love it so much.

Bread Beauty Supply Hair Oil

13 Products That Made Us Fall in Love With Our Hair

Ending my hair routine with the Hair Oil isn’t just about the shine it leaves my hair with but how incredible it leaves it smelling. It’s rare to find an oil that gives you both a gloss finish and incredible scent all in one so when you find one, you stick to it!

Manetrxx Volume Booster

13 Products That Made Us Fall in Love With Our Hair

I love it on wash day, and it gives me extra volume throughout the week. I like to use this as a primer before applying my favorite stylers or adding a pump or two directly to my gel! This is also great for shaking the roots about halfway through drying to give you extra lift!

K18 Molecular Repair Mask

13 Products That Made Us Fall in Love With Our Hair

This leave-in has been a game changer not only for me but all of my clients as well, especially anyone with damage. After rinsing your shampoo, apply this mask and let it sit for four minutes, then layer your favorite deep conditioner directly on top! It only needs four minutes to work its magic and can be rinsed out.

If you have some areas that need extra love, apply one more pump as a leave-in before styling. Just remember, it always needs four minutes before applying any other product.

But with so many out there, how do you choose the right one for you? Different hair textures have different characteristics with different hydration needs. What may be too heavy for a wavy may be just right for someone with super coily hair.

Afro Unicorn: Turning an Avatar into a Magical Movement

When a friend told April Showers she was a unicorn, she never anticipated the mythical horse-like creature with its spiraled horn would inspire a wildly successful business empire and a powerful movement that celebrates and empowers women and children.

She created Afro Unicorn®, a symbol of Brown girls who hustle and make things happen for themselves.

Afro Unicorn fuses her passions with her life’s purpose to create ground-breaking lifestyle brands. You can now find the fun and distinctive avatar on everything from t-shirts to party decorations to hair accessories. With each Afro Unicorn product, Showers wants to remind women and children how unique, divine and magical they are.

“It started with me finding my tribe,” says Showers.  “I wanted to let other women know they’re unicorns.”

Showers is the first Black woman to helm a fully licensed character brand. Only a year after entering retail, she has built a significant presence at the world’s top retail stores in 25-plus categories and 500 SKUs across the United States and Canada.

Afro Unicorn: Turning an Avatar into a Magical Movement

The latest addition to the Afro Unicorn family is Magical Tresses, a line of kid-friendly hair care products for all curl types. With fun vibrant colored packaging and a fruity fresh scent infused with rich exotic fruit extracts a focus on moisturizing strengthening and preventing hair damage. The six products in the line:

Like everything in the Afro Unicorn world, the haircare brand reflects Showers’ personality.

“Everything we do has to be over the top,” she says. “The Edge Control (Sparkle Bright Edges & More) has sparkle, and the conditioner has layers of color.”

And the scent? She calls the unique scent Afronia – a fruity mix aroma infused with papaya, watermelon, and strawberries.

“It smells like a unicorn.”

Tell us a little more about the initial spark that inspired Afro Unicorn:

At the time, I was a single mother of two boys and an insurance broker. A friend kept referring to me as an unicorn – someone working hard, doing all these things.

Unicorns are unique and mystical. I started asking myself why unicorns are all white. They are always associated with straight blonde hair. I wanted to create one that looked like me. My cousin was a graphic artist and designed one for me. When I saw it, I thought, “I need to find all these other unicorns – hard-working women like me. I need to let them know they’re unicorns.”

When did you officially launch Afro Unicorn?

When I saw how people responded in 2019, I knew Afro Unicorn would be a worldwide brand. – a global brand. But I thought selling it was the only way to get it in mass distribution.

The universe figured out how to keep me in this position and have it go everywhere.

Now I’m the first black woman to have a licensed brand character in retail. My competitors are Disney, Marvel, and Nickelodeon. My products are next to Batman and Disney Princesses.

It can be a very overwhelming business. I’m competing against giants.

Afro Unicorn is everywhere now! How did that happen?

The Walmart buyer who discovered Jojo Siwa (Dance Moms) made it her mission to bring Afro Unicorn into this light. That was followed by apparel, holidays, cakes, and beauty. From Day 1 she (Betty) told me “Whatever you do, you need to get to haircare.”

I remember when Walmart reached out to carry Afro Unicorn. I didn’t know what they were talking about. I thought maybe they’ll put me in a few hundred doors, They put me in 3K stores! That was pretty magical and overwhelming.

Afro Unicorn: Turning an Avatar into a Magical Movement

How have you harnessed that Afro Unicorn vibe into Magical Tresses?

When people use Afro Unicorn Magical Tresses, I want them to feel like they’re putting the power on their unicorn mane, and you can’t say anything about my hair because it smells good,  it looks good and I look good. I’m a unicorn!

It isn’t just a hair care brand. It celebrates individuality, conceived out of love and respect for every unique hair texture.

Can you share some detangling and styling tips?

Showers:

  • When detangling, work in smaller sections to reduce friction and tears. The Afro Unicorn Magical Tresses Swirls & Twirls Curl Cream works great as a detangler and melts knots away to prep the hair for styling.
  • Next, you’ll need to get yourself a good detangling brush. Wet hair is much more susceptible to breakage, so brushing gently and carefully working through any knots is important. Try the Afro Unicorn Paddle Brush and remember, when it comes to styling hair, less is definitely more. Try not to overdo it with tight, stressful styles, as this can cause damage over time.
  • Finally, don’t forget about the finishing touches! A good hair & scalp oil, like the Afro Unicorn Magical Tresses Bye Bye Dry Scalp Oil Serum can help to keep hair looking healthy and shiny.  Many moms opt for protective styles such as braids and twists and will need to keep the hair soft and moisturized in between wash days.
  • Also, you should never forget to use the Afro Unicorn Magical Tresses Edges & More to keep styles in place.
  • Add a final touch of sparkle and magic with our Afro Unicorn hair snap clips or Multicolor bows.

You’ve talked about how you hope to be an inspiration for other Black female entrepreneurs. Tell me about the Afro Unicorn Foundation?

Showers: I saw a need to have more social impact with the Afro Unicorn movement.

I started it for female entrepreneurs. But kids like unicorns too. I thought we needed to do more for them. I was going to a lot of high schools and career days. When I asked them what they were going to do when they graduate, they just gave me blank stares.

I realized that to get mini-mes, I had to empower girls when they were young. The Afro Unicorn Foundation builds self-confidence and empowers and teaches them about manifestation and entrepreneurship. It’s about helping them discover their unique potential and how to become the confident leaders of tomorrow.

Unique, Divine & Magical is a transformative program for ages 7-17  that focuses on building self-confidence and embracing individuality. The 8-week program equips them with the skills and values to navigate life’s challenges and opportunities.

The goal is to take this nationwide. We will be bigger than the Girl Scouts.

Afro Unicorn: Turning an Avatar into a Magical Movement

Are you having fun?

I love what I do. I have one of the best positions in the world. Even on bad days, I can go to my DMs and tagged posts and see how this brand affects people’s lives. Once you have the right people in place, I can be the creative force on the outside. I get all kinds of ideas in the middle of the night. I don’t want them to stop.

You’ve accomplished so much over the past four years! What’s ahead?

If I can see it with my mind’s eye, I will realize it. There’s no stopping it. If someone can’t make it happen for me, they’re not the right partner.

I want people to feel the level of confidence that I’ve always felt. I always had this in me. I’ve always thought that we as a people are beautiful. I want the magic in my products to help people feel confident as they navigate the world.

I want to be in the books. I want people to know that this person from South Central Los Angeles created a movement!

Melanie Day Talks About Affordable Hair Care To Invest In This Season

For Melanie Day, her life’s work has been helping people improve the health of their hair.

Day is an accomplished hairstylist who holds a master’s cosmetologist license. She has been behind the chair since 2005 and opened Kentucky’s first multicultural salon – Lexington’s You’ve Got Curls & Hair Loss Center – in 2012.  A talented educator, Day has taught hundreds of students in cosmetology. You’ve Got Curls was named the 2023 Minority Business of the Year by Commerce Lexington Economic Development.

She discovered that it is often difficult for clients to effectively communicate with their stylist about maintaining their hair at home. That’s why she created the In Living Curls Hair Care Community to provide factual information from licensed beauty professionals about haircare, skincare, and healthy living.

Her appreciation for healthy hair products also inspired her latest venture – In Living Curls College Beauty Supply Vending machines on college campuses that provide a curated selection of high-quality, affordable hair care products for textured hair. The vending machines are currently at Berea College and Transylvania University in Kentucky; a third location is in the works.

“I wanted to provide solutions for students with textured hair who are on campus and away from home,” says Day.”I want them to feel seen and heard. My goal is for our company to be the No. 1 beauty provider on college campuses within the next ten years.”

Why did you decide to become a stylist?

I have always been around the hair industry. It naturally Happened. My parents had a salon when I was 5 or 6. They used to have hair shows. They also sold products. As a little girl, I was in the backseat of a car while my dad went to salons and told people about the products’ benefits. I had always been around the hair industry. It naturally happens.

In my senior year of high school, my friend and I decided we were going to go to the same community college. I knew I always enjoyed working with hair, but I never thought of it as a profession. My dad said, “Why don’t you sign up for cosmetology school?” He signed me up, and the rest is history.

In my 17 years of being in the beauty industry. I’ve heard conversations from others about how their family and friends felt about them pursuing this career. For some, it was viewed as a “backup” job, not a real profession. I’m grateful to my parents for seeing what interested me and allowing me to pursue a career in this creative field.

What inspired you to learn how to do textured hair?

Back then, Diane Da Costa’s book Textured Tresses was my bible. That’s all I had back then. There was no YouTube.

I had to find out a lot of things on my own. I traveled a bit to places like Pittsburgh and Atlanta. Wherever I could get an education, I would go.

I took a little bit from everyone and made it my own. Catherine Van Hook, my first mentor, was my biggest influence. She took me under her wing and taught me about cutting and coloring. I was her assistant for three years and learned many foundational things from her. She knew hair, and she knew texture. Her salon was multiracial. I still text Catherine when I have a question about a color formula. She’s a wizard!

Carla Johnson taught me about the importance of having a great shampoo. It sets the tone. Importance of consultation. Importance of why you should really take your time and get to know your clients. She also taught me about not being afraid to make a mistake.

Ladosha Wright in Cleveland has also been an incredible influence. She helped me look at hair like a fabric and not as a race early on. I still use that consultation sheet she shared with me over ten years ago.

Toni Love is another beauty industry mentor of mine. She really helped me with the business side of things.

All of these women have poured into me in their different ways. They saw something in me that reminded them of them. They saw my potential.

Do you have a specialty that you focus on when styling?

I’m really known for really good haircuts.  How I approach each haircut and each client is intuitive. I mess around the hair a lot to see how it flows. I ask very specific questions. That allows me to be very holistic in terms of my approach.

There is no cookie-cutter approach to everyone. It’s a very individualized service.

Some haircuts may be wet. Some may be dry. Some may start dry and finish up wet. It really depends on the hair.

Some folks will say I want to do the Deva cut, the Mona Cut, or the Kadu. They saw this beautiful shape online and asked if I knew how to do it.  I say: “I know how to cut. I know the rules of engagement.” I tell clients the importance of certain steps I’m doing so they understand.

Are curly clients different from straight-haired clients?

One bad haircut can set a person back for years.  I’ve had clients come in and say they haven’t had a haircut for five years because they were so jaded by a stylist who didn’t know what they were doing. When they sit in my chair, they’re really apprehensive. That’s a lot of pressure.

Curly clients are very loyal. I’ve had men and women who have been coming to me for more than a decade.

What are your go-to styling tips for textured hair?

For 3bs, I like finger coils or rolling the hair up.

For afro-textured hair. You can do a dry set if you flat iron your hair, and it’s pretty tightly curled. That will give you the body, so you don’t have to put extra heat on it.

I love a good rod set because you can do much with the hair as the style ages.

We’re getting back to roller sets. That’s really good to do to minimize the excessive heat.

Melanie Day Talks About Affordable Hair Care To Invest In This Season

How did you develop the idea for the In Living Curls College Beauty Supply Vending machines?

There’s nothing new about vending machines. We’ve seen eyelashes and other different beauty accessories being sold in machines.

During Covid, I began thinking about different ways to pivot. What will my business be like once we return to being a person? I’ve always loved being on campus and getting people products on campus. I was online and saw another beauty vending machine on campus, and I thought it was cool.

As I began working on it, I wanted to help the students understand how to care for their hair. I have many students sitting in my chair who would travel hours to buy products because there weren’t any nearby.

We had the ribbon cutting for the machine at Berea College in February 2023 and added the second one in October. They are the first machines of their kind in Kentucky.

The machines have 15 to 20 items – a selection of shampoos, conditioners, tools for braiding hair, styling products, and other accessories. The products I choose are based on demand. In addition to national products like Mielle Organics and The Doux, I also try to incorporate local products.

What are your go-to products that are great for winter haircare?

1) Decca Satin Tame- Satin Tame protects the hair from heat damage caused by the use of various styling appliances such as: blow dryers & flat irons

Use as a moisturizer/revitalizer for natural, relaxed, curly, or permed hair and braids! It helps reduce split ends by adding moisture and elasticity to the hair. To help minimize chlorine damage, use the Satin Tame before & after swimming!

2) Design Essentials Curl Enhancing Mousse- One of my go-to styling products. Many people think mousse dries the hair out, but this formulation is excellent for all hair textures and enhances 2a-4c hair. Excellent also for short faded cuts when used with a curl sponge.

3) She’s Bomb Edge Control- Great edge control with amazing hold and won’t flake

4) Eco Styling Gel– A classic standby for your slicked-back ponytails or guys enhancing their natural curls

5) Design Essentials Coconut and Monoi Gelee– I absolutely love this for doing comb coils, wash-and-go, flat twists, or twists in general. It leaves the hair feeling really moisturized.

6) My Gel Joie- This is one of my favorite products for loc retwists. It doesn’t build up on the hair and washes out easily.

7) Decca Instant Conditioner- This is my stand-by product for daily moisturizing and as a leave-in. It doesn’t weigh the hair down and provides it with the right amount of moisture and protein.

Pressed Roots Founder Piersten Gaines Shares Why The Silk Press Is a Go-To Winter Style

As a super curly girl, Piersten Gaines knew first how hard it was to find a place to press her tresses consistently. Gaines, a Columbia and Harvard Business School graduate, wanted to create a solution to make it much easier for textured-haired women to get silky blowouts.

Pressed Roots was born – a luxurious salon with highly skilled, highly-trained stylists who know what textured hair needs to keep it healthy and gorgeous. The flagship salon opened in Dallas in 2020 and has earned rave reviews: Best Salon for Textured Hair in the Dallas Observers 2020 Best of Dallas edition and one of the Most Highly Rated Salons in North America by Yelp. Although COVID slowed down her national expansion plans, she has plans to open locations around the country.

We talked to Gaines about the Silk Press and why it might be the ideal solution for many women during winter.

Pressed Roots Founder Piersten Gaines Shares Why The Silk Press Is a Go-To Winter Style

What is a silk press?

A silk press is a non-chemical service used on textured hair to achieve a silky straightened look.

What is the best way to do a silk press?

At Pressed Roots, a silk press begins with a clarifying shampoo to remove any build-up and thoroughly start the process on a clean slate. We then move to a hydrating wash and conditioning to inject hydration back into the hair in preparation for heat styling. This is followed by blow drying and pressing the hair with a flat iron to achieve a smooth, silky look. While timing for the entire process may vary, depending on hair texture, length, and density, our average silk blowout takes about 90 minutes.

How do you maintain a silk press?

The key to maintaining a silk press is minimizing factors compromising its sleekness, such as moisture, friction, and heat. However, many factors can impact the longevity of the press – including the state/condition of your hair before the press (i.e., if your hair isn’t used to being straight (trained) or if it is accustomed to being braided down), Your lifestyle (i.e., do you walk a mile to and from work each day?) and natural elements (humidity, moisture). Regular care and protective measures can help prolong the life of your silk press and keep your hair looking smooth and shiny.

Pressed Roots Founder Piersten Gaines Shares Why The Silk Press Is a Go-To Winter Style

Do you have a few tips you can share?

Here are a few:

  • Invest in a Silk or Satin Scarf, Bonnet, or Pillowcase:
    • When you sleep, protect your press with silk! Wrap, pin curl, or flexi rod roll your hair with a silk or satin scarf, bonnet, or satin rollers before going to bed to protect the silk press.
    • Alternatively, consider using silk or satin pillowcases to minimize friction and prevent frizz.
  • Invest in a Quality Shower Cap:
    • Keep away from moisture! Use a high-quality shower cap to shield your hair from moisture during showering.
    • Opt for a cap with a secure fit to prevent steam from affecting the silk press.
  • Dry Shampoo and Lightweight Oil:
    • Depending on how oily your hair naturally is, your silk press may not show the same bounce that it did during the earlier days because it is being weighed down by oil. Extend the life of your silk press by using dry shampoo to refresh and absorb excess oil.
    • Others may notice that after the first few days of their press, their ends feel or appear dry. Apply a lightweight oil to the hair ends to maintain moisture without weighing down the style.
  • Consider skipping a few gym sessions or using a sweatband:
    • Minimize exposure to humidity by avoiding intense workouts that induce excessive sweating.
    • If you decide to exercise, wear a sweatband to absorb sweat around the hairline.

What tools/products should you have for a silk press?

At Pressed Roots, our first promise to our customers is that Hair Health is our Priority. To achieve a silk press that not only looks sleek but also prioritizes the health and well-being of the hair, it is crucial to be intentional about the tools and products you choose. Some key products/tools that we recommend for any healthy silk press are:

Heat Protectant:

Importance: To shield hair from potential heat damage during the silk press process, it’s important to use a high-quality heat protectant spray or serum before applying heat styling tools (before the blow drying process as well as before the flat ironing process)

Condition, Condition, Condition!

Importance: Hydrated hair is essential for achieving a smooth and sleek silk press, but it is also crucial to achieving a healthy silk press. Ensuring your hair is as moisturized as possible before applying any heat or hot tools ensures the hot tools don’t further dry out your hair, leading to damage. Hydrating products such as deep conditioning masks or add-on services such as steam treatments will help you maintain hair health and your silk press.

Flat Irons with Titanium Plates:

Importance: Titanium plates are known for their efficient heat transfer, allowing for a faster and smoother silk press while minimizing damage. Invest in a flat iron with titanium plates for effective and controlled styling. Also, invest in a flat iron that displays the temperature while in use. The temperature should be adjusted based on your hair type, texture, and density!

Are there any special silk press tips for mastering the silk press?

Surprisingly, the key to mastering the silk press technique has little to do with the pressing or flat ironing. It comes from achieving an impeccable blowdry that thoroughly stretches the hair strands. This crucial step lays the foundation for a seamless flat ironing experience, enabling you to limit the flat iron to just one pass per section. This allows you to maintain the integrity of your hair by minimizing the risk of heat damage. This strategic approach not only preserves the health of your hair but also ensures a sleek and silky finish.

Pressed Roots Founder Piersten Gaines Shares Why The Silk Press Is a Go-To Winter Style

Who does a silk press work best for? Who does it not work best for?

The decision to rock a silk press should be guided by how well it complements your lifestyle. While it’s a fantastic and adaptable choice for many, understanding the impact of factors like activity level and maintenance preferences is crucial to ensuring satisfaction with the results, whether in a salon or home. People who should consider include:

  • Anyone Seeking a Sleek Blowout Look: The beauty of a silk press lies in its universal appeal. Anyone can confidently rock this hairstyle, and the results are bound to be stunning, regardless of hair type or texture.
  • Low Maintenance Enthusiasts: A silk press is ideal for those who prefer a hairstyle requiring minimal upkeep. Its longevity and adaptability make it a convenient option for those seeking a stylish yet hassle-free look.

Who Does a Silk Press Not Work Best For?

While a silk press is a versatile option, certain lifestyle factors should be considered when deciding whether it’s the right choice for you. People with active lifestyles who sweat frequently might find that a silk press doesn’t last as long as desired. The exposure to moisture and heat can impact the longevity of the style.

24 Deep Conditioners for Curly Hair Under $17

While the summer sun takes its toll on my curls, winter can be brutal. The cold, dry winter air and indoor heating – not to mention reduced sebum production – can leave curls downright parched. Dry curls can break more easily and lose their spring. That’s why deep conditioners are such a staple for curly girls. But a good hair masque can be pricey. Some can run $40 or more for an 8-ounce jar! While some of these expensive deep conditioners are incredible, many won’t break the bank, loaded with quality butters and oils.

Monii is Bringing Innovation With a Multi-Purpose Beauty Essential

Monii was born out of the founder’s challenge like all good ideas. For Mona Patel, inspiration hit on a cold November day when she was air-drying her long, thick hair. Her sweater was soaked.

“The idea just came to me,” says Patel. It’s a pet peeve of mine when wet hair drips on my clothing. I can’t sit around in wet damp clothing.”

So she grabbed an old cotton burp cloth she had saved from her children and threw it over her shoulders, securing it with a safety pin. She asked her husband to take a photo and began her journey to create the ideal product to let people air dry their hair without drenching themselves.

This was Patel’s first entrepreneurial endeavor. As a CPA with a degree in Accounting, she worked at companies like Deloitte and Fannie Mae for nearly two decades. But her background made her a professional problem solver. With Monii, Patel wanted to solve the common problem thousands face when they try to step out of the shower – especially textured-haired women.

She launched in October 2022, two and a half years after inspiration hit.

Monii is Bringing Innovation With a Multi-Purpose Beauty Essential

Unlike the typical terry-cloth towels that fall off the shoulders or hair turbans that can be uncomfortable and can pull the hair, Monii is crafted to be water-absorbent, secure, comfortable, and even fashionable. It has a terry cotton liner topped by a satin outer layer. In addition to absorbing drips from wet hair, the Monii protects skin and clothing when putting on makeup, using styling appliances, or coloring your hair.

Monii is now available in eight styles, including six colors and two white-satin bridal versions with rhinestones and pearls. Prices range from $48 to $120.

How did Monii evolve from a burp cloth to a stylish cape:

The idea was to create something that could drape over the shoulders, stay in place, and absorb the water. I didn’t even know how to sew.

Over Thanksgiving, My cousin and I went to Joann’s to buy cotton terry fabric. We created a pattern, and she sewed the prototype. I used it and said, ‘This is it!’

Then I had to figure out the whole industry. I had to do a lot of research. My network didn’t include anyone who could help me. By heart, I am a problem solver. The Monii has been revised a dozen times.

The idea to use satin came from a good friend with curly hair. She said, ‘You know Mona, satin is good for black women. If you incorporate satin, you‘ll be making a product for a lot more people.’”

I also wanted to provide other colors besides black. It was intended to be functional – not a fashion statement – but it was something beautiful. People said, “I can wear this out on the street.”

We’re getting interest from stylists. When doing a client’s hair, The Monii makes it so much easier to comb. It doesn’t get caught in the fibers of the terry cloth.

Monii is Bringing Innovation With a Multi-Purpose Beauty Essential

How does the Monii compete with other products on the market, and how are you getting the word out?

In my mind, the Monii isn’t replacing anything out there. It’s truly a market disruptor. We’re not trying to compete with a towel or a cape. They are water-repellent. These are water absorbent. There hasn’t been anything revolutionary in the getting-ready market.

When people get it and use it and love it. They tell their friends about it.

Now I’m getting in front of people. I’m participating in holiday gift shows and shows. I let them touch it, feel it, and see the quality.

Monii is Bringing Innovation With a Multi-Purpose Beauty Essential

You didn’t create it for curly girls; that is your biggest market. Did that surprise you?

Yes. I didn’t anticipate it in the beginning. I was thinking about my pain point. However, the curly hair community is very passionate about their hair. They hate water dripping on their neck. They tell me it has become a staple in their life.

I’m also getting a great response from curly hair stylists. But most of the feedback has come from the curly community and how much they hate water dripping on their neck. They tell me it has become a staple in their life.

What Causes Hair Loss, and How to Treat It

The topic of hair loss among men and women is no longer taboo, as more people are open to discussing their experiences. Celebrities such as Jada Pinkett Smith (Alopecia), Khloe Kardashian (COVID-19), Christina Milian (Post-Partum), and Matthew McConaughey (aging) have contributed to raising awareness by speaking openly about their own hair challenges. If you have noticed you are losing more hair than usual, you will want to take a close look at external and internal factors that could be causing your hair loss, so you can find the hair loss treatment that will work for you.

How much hair loss is normal?

Shedding is a healthy part of the hair growth cycle. It is typical to shed between 50 and 100 hairs per day. Many curly girls are used to finding clumps of their hair in the showers, especially when cutting down on the frequency of washing their hair. Keep in mind that if you detangle weekly, you may see several days’ worth of shed hair coming out at once.

The signs of hair loss can include increased shedding, patches of baldness (especially in the crown area), gradual receding of the hairline and even complete baldness (alopecia).

Check out: Hair Loss Vs. Hair Shedding, What’s the Difference?

“There are many triggers, root causes and system dysfunctions that ultimately leads to hair shedding,” says Dr. Brianna Diorio, Director of Product Education at Nutrafol, a supplement to designed to address the leading causes of thinning hair.

What causes hair loss?

Genetics

Just like in men, genetics play a significant role in female hair loss. If your family has a history of hair thinning or baldness, you might be more susceptible.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal imbalances can trigger hair loss. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menopause, pregnancy, and childbirth can lead to fluctuations in hormone levels – DHT, testosterone, progesterone, estrogen, insulin and cortisol –  affecting hair growth cycles.

What Causes Hair Loss, and How to Treat It

Aging

As women age, hair follicles can shrink and produce thinner hair strands, leading to overall hair thinning. There also is a natural breakdown of collagen and elastin as we age.

Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions like thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases (like alopecia areata), and chronic illnesses can contribute to hair loss.

Stress

Physical or emotional stress can disrupt the hair growth cycle and lead to hair shedding. This is known as telogen effluvium.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Inadequate intake of essential nutrients, especially vitamins and minerals like iron, zinc, biotin, and vitamin D, can impact hair health.

Medications

Some medications, including those for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout, and high blood pressure, can cause hair loss as a side effect.

Hairstyles

Excessive use of heat tools, tight hairstyles (like braids and ponytails), and chemical treatments (like coloring, perming, and straightening) can damage hair and lead to breakage. Look for broken hairs around your forehead, a receding hairline and patches of hair loss where your hair is pulled tightly.

Poor Hair Care

Improper hair care, including harsh shampoos, frequent washing, and inadequate conditioning, can weaken hair and contribute to hair loss.

Weight Loss

Rapid and significant weight loss can trigger hair loss due to the body’s response to stress and changes in hormonal balance.

Environmental Factors

Exposure to pollutants, UV radiation, and other environmental factors can weaken hair and contribute to its loss

If you’re concerned about hair loss regardless of your hair type, it’s recommended to consult a healthcare professional or a dermatologist. They can help determine the underlying causes of hair loss and provide appropriate guidance and treatment options based on your specific situation.

“Treatment can prevent hair loss from worsening and help women regrow their hair. Treatment delivers the best results when started at the first sign of hair loss,” according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association.

How to treat hair loss

Depending on why your hair is thinning, there are different possible remedies. And treatment can prevent hair loss from worsening and help women regrow their hair.

Treatments like Minoxidil and Rogaine

Minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine) works by prolonging the growth phase of hair follicles by widening them and prolonging the anagen stage of hair growth.

Changing your hairstyle

If your hair loss is caused by your hairstyle – traction alopecia –  you can reduce your risk of developing this type of hair avoiding buns, ponytails, and up-dos that are tightly pulled back. Changing your hairstyle can help.

Hair vitamins

Many supplements, including biotin and folic acid, are said to help grow and thicken hair. In studying these different supplements, the findings have been mixed. In most studies, the supplements had no effect on hair growth and thickness.

In one study, however, 120 healthy women had thicker hair and less hair loss after taking specific omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids, and antioxidants. They took this combination for six months. If these results can be repeated in other studies, we’ll have some evidence to recommend taking these supplements.

“Since the follicle itself is a mini organ, it is directly impacted by the function or dysfunction of other systems and we need to give it the building blocks it needs for optimal functioning,” says Nutrofol’s Diorio. “Much like the heart needs constant blood supply, our hair follicles need a supply of key nutrients, adaptogens and antioxidants to support hair health, such as Vitamins B, C, and E, as well as minerals like zinc and iron.”

What Causes Hair Loss, and How to Treat It
Photo of a woman leaning on a kitchen counter and reading instructions for medicine

Prescription drugs

A dermatologist may prescribe a medication like Spironolactone, finasteride or flutamide to treat female pattern hair loss. They include options like Musely The Hair Pill which is an oral medication that blocks the hormones that contribute to hair loss and promotes hair growth.

Lasers for at-home use

The FDA has approved laser combs, helmets, and other devices, which are available without a prescription, to treat hair loss at home. These devices emit a low level of laser light that may help stimulate new hair growth.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy

This therapy uses your own blood. After a blood draw, the blood is placed into a machine that separates the blood into its different components. The platelets, which are a type of blood cell, are treated and injected into your scalp.  It is believed the platelets help stimulate your cells to grow hair.

Stem cells: Using stem cells to treat FPHL is still in the experimental stages. Like platelet-rich plasma therapy, more studies are needed to know whether stem cells are a safe and effective treatment for FPHL.

The do’s and don’ts of treating hair loss

Do’s:

Maintain a Balanced Diet

Consume a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins to support hair health. Focus on foods like lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water to keep your hair and scalp hydrated.Gentle Hair Care: Use mild, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners that are suitable for your hair type. Avoid aggressive scrubbing or excessive washing, as this can damage delicate hair. Use Wide-Toothed Combs: When detangling, use wide-toothed combs or your fingers to prevent unnecessary hair breakage.

Protect Hair from Heat

Minimize the use of heat styling tools like hairdryers, curling irons, and straighteners. If you must use them, use a heat protectant and opt for lower heat settings.

Choose Gentle Hairstyles

Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the hair, such as tight braids, ponytails, or buns. Opt for loose styles to minimize stress on the hair shaft.

Consider Volumizing Products

Use volumizing shampoos, conditioners, and styling products to add the appearance of fullness to your hair.

Consult a Professional

Seek advice from a dermatologist or hair care professional to identify the cause of your thinning hair and receive appropriate guidance.

What Causes Hair Loss, and How to Treat It
women at a beauty salon

Don’ts:

Avoid Harsh Chemical Treatments

Avoid excessive use of hair dye, bleach, and harsh chemical treatments, as they can damage and weaken the hair.

Say No to Tight Extensions

Avoid hair extensions that are attached tightly to your natural hair, as they can contribute to hair breakage and stress.

Limit Overstyling

Minimize the use of tight hair accessories, such as rubber bands or hair clips, that can pull on the hair.

Don’t Overwash

Washing your hair too frequently can strip it of natural oils. Aim for a balance between cleanliness and preventing excessive dryness.

Avoid Crash Diets

Extreme diets or rapid weight loss can affect your overall health, including the health of your hair.

Don’t Ignore Medical Concerns

If you suspect an underlying medical condition is causing your hair thinning, consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

These NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Winners are the OG Holy Grail Curl Products

Growing up as a curly girl. I remember flipping through beauty magazines in search of products for my tight 3b ringlets. Hint: there were none.

When pubs began giving out annual awards, I would look for the curl products that won. Whether it was Allure or Good Housekeeping, the curl category didn’t exist.

So when we started NaturallyCurly, we wanted to make it easier for people with curls, coils, and waves to find the right products for their hair. We created the NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Awards in 2006 to celebrate the standouts, giving out awards in roughly a dozen key categories.

That first Best of the Best was pretty bare bones. We went on CurlTalk and asked people to name their favorite products in each category, tallying up the answers by hand. Initially, there were only a handful of products on the market, and most of those had not been developed specifically for texture.

The Best of the Best Awards program has come a long way since its humble beginnings.

As the industry evolved and grew, we added categories to keep up – whether that be the best products for braids and twists or the best scalp treatments. Some categories have disappeared, like “Best ingredient to add to a DIY recipe.”

These NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Winners are the OG Holy Grail Curl Products

Within each category, we broke it down by texture type, realizing that a Type 2 wavy’s favorite gel wasn’t necessarily the same as the one preferred by a Type 4 coily.

As the site grew, we were able to survey hundreds and then thousands of community members. While there were always old favorites among the winners, some surprising newcomers popped up.

The NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Awards is now considered the ultimate seal of approval by curl brands both large and small – the gold standard for the textured hair community.  You can find NaturallyCurly’s Best of the Best seal on product bottles and ads. Some brands have done entire campaigns around winning the award.

“Winning the Best of the Best award put us on the map on a much broader stage than anything we had before,” says Canadian stylist Jonathan Torch, creator of Best of the Best winner Curl Keeper, which won “Best Frizz Fighter” several years. “We were – and still are – recognized as a truly competitive and high-performing product, up there with some of the largest beauty companies in the entire world. I still appreciate this victory, and I will always be grateful for the recognition and support that I have gotten from this award.”

Nearly two decades and thousands of products later, we wanted to revisit a few of the earliest  Best of the Best winners. The packaging may have changed and the formulations may be different, but many still remain holy grail products. Here is a look back at the OG holy grail products who have won NaturallyCurly’s Best of the Best Awards.

Elucence Moisture Benefits Shampoo

These NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Winners are the OG Holy Grail Curl Products

This wasn’t a brand that most people had ever heard about. But it had a cult following within the textured-hair community. But people couldn’t get enough of this peach-scented inexpensive shampoo. These NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Winners are the OG Holy Grail Curl Products

After losing her cosmetics case on the trip to St. Vincent, a local whipped up a blend of herbs, roots, and aloe for her to use on her hair. Knot Today is the ultimate detangler,  while Curling Custard was one of the first moisturizing gels that defined curls without the crunch. As word about the products grew, we couldn’t keep them in stock.

TIGI Bedhead Curls Rock Amplifier Curly Hair Cream

These NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Winners are the OG Holy Grail Curl Products

If you ask a dozen curlies to name their favorite styling creams, this is likely to pop up on that list. One woman once told me she goes through a bottle of this every two weeks! The packaging has changed several times over the past two decades, but it continues to be a favorite, especially for Type 3s like me who give it high marks for its ability to define, hold and fight frizz

CURLS Lavish Curl Moisturizer

These NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Winners are the OG Holy Grail Curl Products

In 2002, we got a call from Mahisha Dellinger who had just launched a textured hair-care line with  a group of products available only on the site. The Moisturizer – now a part of the brand’s Classic Collection – was a standout and continues to be a top seller. Since then, CURLS has become a favorite for all textures, with several popular collections, including Blueberry Bliss, Sea Moss, and Poppin Pineapple.

AG Re: Coil

These NaturallyCurly Best of the Best Winners are the OG Holy Grail Curl Products

I have a very special place in my heart for AG Re: Coil! When the team at  Canada’s largest professional haircare brand AG was creating its first curly hair product, they did some research and came across NaturallyCurly. They started posting on CurlTalk, and surveying members. They sent out samples for people to test, adjusting the formula based on feedback. The result was Re: Coil Curl Activator, a moisturizing styling cream with the perfect amount of hold. Initially, Re: Coil was only available at a limited number of salons in the United States.

But because of NaturallyCurly’s role in its development, the company  allowed us to sell it on our just-launched CurlMart (It was the first e-commerce site for curly hair products!).  It was only the second product we sold, and thanks to an article about NaturallyCurly in the New York Times Sunday Style section, we sold out in two days. Re: Coil can be credited with putting CurlMart – now SHOPNaturallyCurly – on the map!

22 Hairsprays to Lock Your Curls in Place: From Flexible to Firm

In the days BCP (Before Curl Products) was available, hairsprays were stiff, sticky, and smelled like Aqua Net and Final Net. I remember my bottle of Final Net, which I plastered on my blow-dried and straightened hair. My hair felt like a helmet. It was a fire hazard!

How hairspray has changed

Hairspray was born in the 1940s and developed by a manufacturer originally manufacturing aerosol cans in WW2 for insecticides. Hairsprays have evolved with new technologies, innovative ingredients, and various holds.

The latest generation of hairspray can lock waves and curls in place without crunch. Many are designed specifically for curly hair. They promise to prevent your waves and curls from turning to frizz, even on the most humid days. And it can help create more volume and lift at your roots. And many of these new hairsprays have conditioning properties and ingredients that hold.

Types of hairsprays

There are three varieties of hairspray:

Flexible Hold Hairsprays

These have the least amount of hold, making them ideal for waves and curls. They provide hold without crunch, maintaining movement rather than paralyzing your tresses. Most hairsprays for wavy and curly hair are flexible sprays, and those with medium hold.

Medium Hold Hairsprays

Sometimes, these are called working sprays and have a stronger hold. They provide a hold without making your hair feel like plastic.

Maximum/Firm Hold Hairsprays

These are the strongest sprays to keep your curls in place. These may not be the best choice for everyday styling for curly girls, but they may be useful for certain occasions.

Here are a few great options for flexible, medium, and strong-hold hairsprays.
