As a lady with short hair, it can be challenging to find a protective style that can work with my length. Sometimes I have to compromise a look because I don’t have enough hair to pull it off. I’d spend most summers installing braids that would slide right out a few days later. I was completely over not being able to style my hair the way I wanted to. Truth is, I could, I just didn’t have the knowledge of how. With some research, I discovered a few ways to get the styles I wanted, despite my short, tapered cut. If you’ve been trying to conquer protective styles for short hair, here are 8 options that’ll keep you fresh for the spring and summer months.

Braids

Bubble Ponytail

Nothing is worse than stepping outside and being hit with dense, damp weather. Humidity will ruin a perfectly styled hairdo and possibly your mood if you can’t figure out a way to get it under control. When moisture hits the air, no hair type is safe. Straight hair tends to get wavy and curly hair gets frizzy. While you can’t control the weather, you do have strategies to combating the effects of humidity.
Protective Styles

What I love most about protective styles is that it allows you the opportunity to manipulate your hair any way you desire. Whether you choose braids, crochet, a wig or a weave, hiding your natural hair under a protective style is sure to shield it from humid weather. Box braids are a popular option for the warmer seasons because it allows your scalp to breathe while giving you room to style them. With a wig, you have the luxury of achieving your desired look and hanging your hair up when the day is over.
Oil
Hair that is already packing a lot of moisture can help combat frizz from bad weather. After you wash, condition, and apply a leave-in conditioner, add a bit of oil to your hair to help maintain a healthy level of hydration. Some good options are OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Extra Penetrating Oil, Ouidad Mongongo Oil, Darshana Natural Indian Oil or Sunny Isle Jamaican Organic Pimento Oil with lack Castor Oil. Using them as you unravel your twist-out or braid-out will help seal your ends and alleviate frizz.
Use Mousse
The light weight of a foam should never be underestimated. If you’re set on rocking your big, voluptuous curls, know that humidity doesn’t have to stop you. Products like DevaCurl’s Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam , Design Essentials Almond & Avocado Mousse will give you the volume you want while rejecting the humidity in the air. Another great option is SheaMoisture’s Coconut & Hibiscus Frizz-Free curl Mousse. This formula locks in the moisture and has no sulfates, parabens, and gluten.
Shampoo and Conditioner
Fighting humidity should start way before you step outside. Using a shampoo and conditioner that is specifically designed to fight frizz can only help you defeat fly-aways and unruly hair. Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control Defrizzing Shampoo has a sulfate-free formula that will fully restore your curls as well as protect them against future frizzing. When you combine the advanced shampoo with the Advanced Climate Control Defrizzing Conditioner, you’re preparing your hair to confidently face the world of humidity with absolutely no worries. This conditioner will moisturize your hair from root to tip.
Gel
The right gel will hold every single hair in place. On those days of extra humidity, add some styling gel into your hair regimen. A great product to use is Ecoco Eco Styler Professional Styling Gel with Argan Oil. This specialized formula includes rare oils from the Argan trees in Morocco. Not only are you sealing your curls, you’ll be locking in the moisture. Adding Eco Styler gel to your twist-out or braid-out sustain your curls through any kind of weather. Here’s a few other great gels Camille Rose Curl Maker, DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel and Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curl Stimulator.
Humidity can be a pain but with these 5 style tips, you can combat frizzy hair with no problem. What products do you use when the weather feels a bit hazy out?
I’ve fallen victim to washing my hair every time my twist out or flexi rod set falls flat. It was either wash my hair to make it look fresh again or find a head wrap that would hide the bedhead. Excessive washing is never a good idea and sometimes my schedule wouldn’t allow for me to do it. I was at the point where I needed a solution, and fast.
I wasn’t too knowledgeable when it came to hair refreshers. My hair type is known to frizz up at the sight of the slightest mist so I wasn’t too sure what I could use that would tame my curls. In theory, whatever product I decided to use would have to be packed with oils to restore the lost moisture. After perusing the Best of the Best list, I decided to give the suggested hair refresher, Alikay Wake Me Up Curl Refresher a try.
Beyond the NaturallyCurly list, I did my own research. I knew my hair needed oils to rejuvenate the curls and from what I read, Alikay has sweet almond, pomegranate and wheatgrass oils included in their formula. I also paid extra close attention to the reviews. Liz, a NaturallyCurly customer wrote, “I like that the spray is more of a mist, vs other refreshers that have a more concentrated stream. For my purposes, I like to spray all over my hair. The spray wakes up my curls and provides a little bit of hold too.” Bingo!
After purchasing Alikay’s refresher, I decided to use the spray on a 3-day old twist out. First of all, the smell is delicious. I had a medley of fruits that sat on the top of my head and followed me throughout the day. I even had a colleague ask me what I was wearing that smelled like a mix of coconuts and mangos. Besides the smell, I was really excited about the lightness of the product. The formula was oily, which helped bring moisture back to my hair. Unfortunately, after spraying the refresher in my hair, I noticed my hair start to frizz a bit. Turns out that with all of my research, I missed the part where the products specifies that it should be used on thicker hair. I am in the 3c/4a family and my hair isnt as thick as I’d like it to be. Even with the mixture of oils in the formula, it still managed to frizz my curls. I had to manipulate my hair with gel after using the spray to alleviate the fly aways.
Overall, I enjoyed the refresher but I’m not too sure it is something I’d continue to use without the help of a little Ecostyler Gel. I loved the compliments on how yummy my hair smelled and I really appreciated the restoration of moisture because of all the oils. Some reviewers mentioned that this worked for their 2c type hair. Ultimately, the hair likes what it likes. My hair didn’t necessarily dislike this product, it just needs to be accompanied with a holder to see its fullest potential.

What you put into your body can show up in many forms. Because your body is your temple, when you use new products, feel stressed, or have an unbalanced diet, it will manifest itself in your skin, weight, and your hair. Often times, these factors and much more contribute to the reason why your hair texture and curl pattern changes. When you’re used to your hair curling a certain way and absorbing particular products, the shift can be alarming. Hair shedding or breakage is also an indicator that something could be happening internally. A visit to your dermatologist can help access your scalp and the potential reasons for the change but before you do, see if any of these factors are behind your new hair type.
Stress
If you’re under physical or emotional stress, your hair can end up taking the blow. Often times, high stress levels result in thinning of the hair. The follicles shed at a rapid pace, causing a temporary hair loss through a process called telogen effluvium. When your hair reaches the telogen phase, it is in a period of resting. When stress is involved, the hair switches from growing to resting, causing it to shed. Stress also causes an increase in the cortisol hormone. The increase may also result in an interference of your hair’s growth cycle. Once you’re able to manage stress, your hair will shift from resting to growing. This can take about 3-6 months.
Postpartum
If you’ve just had a baby, then you’ve just endured a full 9 months of thick, luxurious, fast-growing hair. With the increase in hormones, your hair and nails react in a positive manner. Postpartum, as your hormones re-adjust, you’re likely to experience a significant amount of shedding, hair loss or a shift in thickness. Although this can be a drastic change, your hair will return to normal in about a year.
Health, Diet and Sickness
What you put into your body shows up in your everyday life. Maintaining a healthy diet is vital to how your body works. Think of your scalp as soil and your hair as grass. If you tend the soil by drinking lots of water and eating the right food, you will directly contribute to your hair’s prosperity. Lack of hydration, iron and vitamin D will result in hair that isn’t reaching its fullest potential due to a deficiency in nutrients. Women with more melanin are prone to vitamin D deficiency. It is important to supplement the loss of iron and vitamin D with daily multi-vitamins.
Too much gluten, sugar, and caffeine can cause Candidiasis or Candida, a fungal infection caused by yeast. One of the side effects of the infection is a shift in hair texture, growth, and breakage. Vlogger Naptural shared her experience with Candidiasis and how she was able to combat it. Take a look:
Embedded content: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9SGGsG5DEIHypothyroidism is one of the most common reasons for temporary hair loss. The Thyroid Gland produces a hormone that controls your body’s metabolism. If your thyroid gland is not as active, it won’t produce enough of the hormone connected to your metabolism. As a result, your metabolism will slow down, thus slowing down lot’s of your body’s functions like hair growth.
Medication
New medication, or a change in dosage can result in hair breakage or thinning. Although medications are prescribed to aid health problems and conditions, they usually come with side effects that react to hormone changes. Speak with your doctor to see what the risks are of continuing the prescribed medication.
As you can see, there are many reasons that your hair can change in texture. The best advice that can be given is to seek the care of a medical professional the moment you see a shift in your hair. Your body will always tell you what’s wrong but often times, we ignore the signs. Regular check-ups that test your iron, cholesterol, liver and other organs are important. As proven above, a change in your hair is usually connected to a bigger issue.

Blogger Ndidi Aliago, better known as 4C Chronicles on Instagram, has a head full of gorgeous, luxurious natural hair. Like most of us in the natural hair care community, we look to bloggers to achieve certain looks, get new hair care routines, and find overall inspiration for that, “what am I going to do with my hair next?” moment. When you find a blogger that has a similar hair texture and defines your hair goals, you want to take notes on all of the techniques she uses. Here at NaturallyCurly, our community of curl-friends are our hair goals. Keep reading as Ndidi spills all the tea on her transition, her go-to techniques and how she cares for her type 4 kinky hair.
Looking at Ndidi’s hair, I automatically feel a sting of envy. Between the length and thickness, it’s safe to assume that she takes great care of her hair. Some women transition from processed to natural to address breakage. That wasn’t an issue for Ndidi. “I’d always had what some would perceive to be ‘healthy hair’, even when I was texturised. However, I said the day my hair looked noticeably brown in the sun is the day I’d start making plans for my natural hair journey. I ended up transitioning for two years before accidentally big-chopping and here we are three years later!”
Although she’s always had a head full of healthy hair, she does note loving and maintaining it hasn’t always been a walk in the park. “I would say the most challenging thing about my hair journey is consistency. A hair care routine can only really be fruitful if you are consistent, and still, after five years I have my moments! Additionally, I go through periods of absolute admiration and love for my tresses to not being so in love with my hair. Documenting my progress with pictures and reminiscing on good hair moments helps,” she said. I can imagine we’ve all gone through those moments where our twist out looks like trash and we just want to reach for the nearest wig so that all can be well in the world. In the moments that you find an alternative to hiding your hair, you take a step closer to accepting yourself and your style as is. “My most empowering natural hair moment was making the decision to wear my natural hair to graduation. I was adamant that I would be buying 26” bundles and had to take a step back and ask myself why I felt the need to always go for something other than my own natural hair when it came to special occasions. I felt empowered enough to rock my natural hair on an occasion that I initially believed needed something else,” Ndidi recalled.
Through her hair journey, Ndidi adapted a hair technique that produces magical results in stretching and preserving her styles. “I use rubber thread to stretch my hair, which for me, is better for moisture retention compared to normal sewing thread. I first start by thoroughly moisturising my hair using the LOC (leave-in, oil, cream”> method and will part my hair depending on the amount of stretch I am trying to achieve; the smaller the parts, the greater the stretch. I double up each threading piece I use and loop it around the base of my hair a few times to ensure it is secure. After winding the threading piece down my hair shaft, I’ll make a knot to secure everything in place. With practice, the technique becomes easier to master and should take anywhere between 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.”

Threading is one of the many ways that Ndidi manipulates her hair. In order to achieve any of her hairstyles, she has to have a functional list of products that her hair can absorb. So what does she use? “Extra virgin olive oil to pre-poo, hydrating leave-in conditioner by Primal Beauty, Castor oil, Shea butter, and Curly by Nature’s hair repair oil for my edges,” she said.
With these products comes a strict regimen (with room for slacking”>. Here’s a rundown on what Ndidi’s wash day looks like. “I pre-poo, deep condition and wash my hair about once a month (I’d love to aim for every 2-3 weeks, but life”>. After this I’ll LOC my hair with a combination of products and style as desired until my next wash day. Although tedious, washing my hair in sections, finger detangling and air drying have made wash days a lot more manageable! Using the LOC method consistently (every 3-4 days”> and deep conditioning every wash day is my key for moisture retention. If I want to go the extra mile, I LOC my hair just before bed and wrap it up with a silk scarf. This provides a nice warm environment for my hair (almost like a greenhouse”> and produces superb results the next day.”

If you’re a type 4 curly girl without the right products or regimen, the natural hair lifestyle can be discouraging. I’ve been natural for well over 10 years and I still struggle with fully loving and embracing my hair. Curl friends, we’ve all been there. It’s a process. Ndidi leaves us with some words of encouragement. “I would always recommend that naturalistas struggling to embrace their hair texture follow and interact with hair bloggers that have a similar hair texture. This is because seeing hair that looks like yours and a hair texture that you can relate to helps normalise all hair textures. Representation is so important when it comes to texture love and the onus isn’t just on those struggling to embrace their hair. We all need to do our part to ensure all hair textures are represented and celebrated equally.”

They say when a woman cuts her hair, she’s about to change the world. For Lea Robinson, cutting and coloring her hair led to a liberation of her emotions, physical appearance and the welcoming of new opportunities. The singer and TV personality isn’t foreign to the entertainment industry’s love for revolving hair styles. This change was more personal though. After trading in her long locks for a chic pixie cut and going from black hair to blonde bombshell, Lea was ready do what was needed to maintain her new style.
There are so many reasons women explore the idea of a big chop. Beyond wanting to be natural, some of us go through life changes that require us to let go of the past and embrace something new. During a period of self-discovery, Lea picked up the scissors and never looked back. “I cut my hair maybe about a year and a half ago. Just like a lot of women who go through a break up, that was me. I felt really powerful,” she said. “With cutting off my hair, I let go of the past. It made me feel like a woman and I got to highlight my true features. There were no wigs or weaves hiding me. It made me embrace my true self.”
If you’ve never done a big chop before you’ll learn there is a period of time where you have to adjust to your new look. Some may opt to wear a wig or weave because they’re not fully comfortable with their style while others feel a sense of freedom because the weight of their hair is gone and they’re able to fully embrace their face. Lea was in love with her hair but after almost 2 years of maintaining a short cut, she wanted to explore more style options. “I needed something new. I loved my short hair and I didn’t want to go back to wearing wigs and weaves. I went to my stylist, Justin Bell Risper, and he said ‘Lea you have to do this is steps, you can’t go straight to blonde,’” she recalled. “Once we did it, I felt alive again. I felt the same way I did when I first cut my hair. It was a new version of myself.”
Lea’s stylist was right. Going from black to blonde can take a toll on your hair. Fortunately for her, she maintained a good hair regimen prior to adding color. “I thought my hair texture was going to change. Before going blonde I began treating my hair, which was new for me because I never used treat my hair at all. I would go to bed without a scarf and all. Because I treated my hair, it actually remained the same.”
So what was her secret? Lea has mastered the art of keeping her hair moisturized. “I naturally have dry skin and dry hair. I used a lot of coconut oil right before I color it. My hair absorbs everything so I have to use products that will keep it well moisturized. Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls and Pillow Soft Curls is good for my curl pattern and it doesn’t leave any flakes or residue in my hair. I used to use Nairobi Edge Control to slick it down, but switched up when I went blonde because it left a color tint. I love Gots To Be Edge Control for my edges.”
Lea’s hair regimen is quite simple. After applying coconut oil and applying either Quick Curls or Pillow Soft Curls (because different moods call for different products”>, she puts on the one item that her hair can’t live without; a durag. “The durag is life changing. I used to wear scarves all the time and im such a wild sleeper. The durags do everything. It literally changed my life. Sometimes I get headaches from tying them too tight but it’s well worth it!”
It’s been roughly 3 months since Lea has gone blonde and she loves it. To keep her look fresh, her wardrobe stylist Mickey Freeman pulls looks that highlights her face and compliments her new style. This cut couldn’t have come at a better time. “I couldn’t be more excited for what God has planned for me for my future. I have two musical projects that I’m working on right now. My self help book is getting its final touches and I’m also going to be returning to the TV screen very soon. All in all I’m just blessed and excited for what’s to come.”

There is no such thing as too much protection. This is evident with The Mane Choice’s Tropical Moringa Collection. Not only do the products aim to hydrate your hair, the ingredients are specifically designed to protect and seal your strands. Because that’s the kind of protection I need in my life, I decided to give the Sweet Oil & Honey Endless Moisture Shampoo, the Rinse Out or Leave-In Conditioner and the Endless Moisture Sealing Cream a try.
I am always looking for products that will retain as much moisture as possible during the winter months. Because this weather can be so harsh, I usually resort to protective styles so that I can shield my strands from the cold. Still, while my hair is in braids, twists, or even a hat, it is important that I feed it products that will nourish and moisturize rather than strip and break my hair.
You know the feeling you get when you sit in your stylists’ chair for a wash? You’re not sure if it’s the magic of her fingers or some divine potion being poured and rubbed through your scalp. Either way, the you walk away from the chair feeling extremely relaxed with a squeaky clean head of hair. That was my overall experience with a wash of the endless moisture shampoo. The lather stood out to me because I really felt the formula penetrate my hair.
The idea of a conditioner that could be left in or washed out worried me a bit, although I wasn’t sure why. I decided to apply the conditioner after I shampooed and let it sit for a while. About 15 minutes later, I rinsed my hair and dried it with a cotton t-shirt. The smart thing to do would’ve been to apply more conditioner so that it could also be used as a leave-in. Because I wanted to also use the Endless Moisture Sealing Cream, I decided that would take the place of my leave-in. Sometimes it can take a couple of products to manipulate your curls. I wanted to achieve protected and hydrated curls without an excess of products. If the purpose of the Tropical Moringa collection was to hydrate my hair, I felt using all 3 products would do that without me having to overwhelm my strands with conditioners.
My hair was completely soft after my shampoo and condition so I was eager to see what else was in store when it came to using the Endless Moisture Sealing Cream. I squeezed a good amount in my hands and rubbed thoroughly through my hair from roots to tip, as instructed on the bottle. I have a short cut but I felt the need to add a bit more before I roller set my hair.
As I woke up the next morning to style my hair, I did notice that I felt very soft and moisturized. The immediate results were good but by Wednesday, I felt like it was time to hide my hair under a hat until wash day. In general, this is a trend for me so I can’t blame the products, but I was hoping for something that would sustain me for a week. In hindsight, it may have been beneficial to wash the conditioner out and use it as a leave-in. Lesson learned!
Overall, I’d say Mane Choice Tropical Moringa Collection is worth trying. They have a few more products that may address your specific hair needs. Now that I have the shampoo, conditioner and sealing cream, I’m going to try the Restorative Spray, the Pearly Braid Out Glaze and the Moisture Mask. What do you think? Will you be trying the Tropical Moringa Collection? Let us know in the comments below!
The winter season is a crucial time for my hair. Now more than ever, my scalp dries out and leaves embarrassing flakes and dandruff. While I use the colder seasons for wearing braids as a protective style, it becomes counterproductive by contributing to my hair flaking. Applying oils and braid sprays served as a temporary solution because by the next day, I’d have to apply more products. Before I knew it, There was an excess of products left in my hair, adding to the build-up that was already there. At about the two week mark, it’d be time to take my braids out because my scalp would be unbelievably dry, itchy, and dirty.
I was in desperate need of a product that would reduce the flaking, and help retain moisture. To be honest, it was important for me to add something into my hair regimen so that I could continue to confidently wear braids throughout the winter season. I came across Mizani’s Scalp Care Calming Lotion. While doing some research, I learned that the lotion is specifically designed to aid irritated scalps, fight dandruff and combat dry scalp. That’s exactly what I needed. The brand has a scalp care shampoo and conditioner to go with the calming lotion. I purchased all three, but focused on the calming lotion since my hair was still braided.
I rubbed the calming lotion on the parts between my braids. After applying, I massaged my scalp to make sure there was no white residue lingering in my hair. To my surprise, the calming lotion quietly woke up my scalp. There was no minty tingling feeling but I definitely felt the difference once the lotion was applied. It was indeed a calming lotion. After a few hours of the product in my hair, I noticed the flaking and itching reduce a bit. Nothing drastic, but my scalp appeared to be less irritated. To me this meant nothing because I experienced this each time applied oils or moisturizers to my hair. The true test would be in the coming days when those products would usually wear off and resort back to it’s dry, flakey state.
For the next 5 days I paid close attention to my scalp. I’m not going to front, I had little faith in the calming lotion. But to my surprise, I didn’t have to apply it again after my initial application. The itching and flaking didn’t stop completely, but it wasn’t as unbearable. I was honestly surprised to find something that worked more than 2 days. I think when I use the Mizani Scalp Care Shampoo, conditioner and calming lotion, I’ll see better results.
Overall, I’d say I found a product that will retain the moisture in my hair and reduce the flaking and dry scalp. I wouldn’t call this product a miracle worker, but I do think that it’s gentle formula is packed with nutrients that directly addressed my scalp’s needs. I think the Mizani Scalp Care trio will help clean, condition and moisturize my hair so that my dry, flakey scalp is a thing of the past.

Transitioning back to your natural hair state is always an educational journey. Beyond learning about your hair texture and curl pattern, you get to actively sample products that work for you. Unfortunately, transitioning can be an expensive task. Process of elimination regarding shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in conditioners can cost a pretty penny. The truth is, most of the ingredients found in your everyday hair products are sitting right in your kitchen cabinet or refrigerator. If you’ve decided to go natural and want to experience your transition with superfoods that are proven to strengthen and nourish your hair, then look no further. Here are three homemade products you can use during your transition from processed to natural.
Aztec Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo Mask

Both Aztec Clay and Apple Cider Vinegar work wonders independently. Aztec clay, when mixed with other products, can serve as the ultimate face mask. ACV is used as a disinfectant that purifies everything it comes into contact with. When both products are mixed together, they form a superpower cleaner. This isn’t your traditional shampoo. Mix an equal amount of Aztec clay, ACV and warm water in a bowl. Apply the clay to the scalp of your head. Once your entire head is covered, sit with the formula for approximately 30 minutes. Thoroughly wash the clay out of your hair. This mixture completely cleans your scalp but it can strip it of its moisture. To rehydrate your hair, try this homemade deep conditioner.
Avocado Oil Deep Conditioner

One of the most important functions to your transition is using an effective deep conditioner. Now, more than ever, your hair needs to remain hydrated. A deep conditioner will restore moisture from root to ends. If you want to cut costs and moisturize your curls, mix a ripe avocado and a few tablespoons of olive oil (some alternative options are coconut & castor oil”> to make your own deep conditioner. Comb the mixture through your hair, sit with it for approximate 30 minutes and then rinse. Do this weekly to promote growth, retain moisture, and alleviate frizz.
Olive Oil Leave-in Conditioner
Image: Getty images
Now that you’ve washed and deep-conditioned your hair, it’s time to find a leave-in conditioner that’ll continue to promote healthy, hydrated, beautiful curls! This recipe requires more items because it will help sustain your hair between washes. Take 2 cups of water, 1 cup of witch hazel, 2 tablespoons of vegetable glycerin (purchase online or at a natural food store”>, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and a quarter size of aloe vera gel and mix it together in a bowl. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray in your hair after or in between washes.
Despite all the work that goes into transitioning from processed to natural, the benefits of beautiful, healthy hair makes it all worth it. The consensus in the natural hair community has been that natural hair care maintenance is timely and expensive. It doesn’t have to be. Using the right products can reduce costs and time in half.
What do you think? Would you transition your hair with natural, homemade products?
Fairy knots or single strand knots (also known as ssk”>, are a complete nightmare for women with curly hair. Fairy knots are actual strands of hair that knot within themselves and often add other adjoining hairs into the mix, creating even bigger knots. As you can imagine, natural hair with various curl patterns can knot quite easily. Thankfully, there are many ways to remedy this hair nuisance.
For some, regular trims are all they need to fix fairy knots. For others, it’s not that simple. Knots can go away with proper treatment and a change in your hair regimen. Little things like limiting your wash and gos and defaulting to two-strand twists will help stretch your hair and preserve your ends. Another easy remedy is massaging conditioner into the fairy knot to moisturize and loosen the knots. Removing the knots with your fingers is better than trying with a comb or brush, which could just remove the knot along with other perfectly healthy hairs in the process. The best way to deal with them is to prevent them. Here are five ways to reduce fairy knots:
Get regular trims
The healthier your ends, the less your hair will knot. If your hair tends to be dry, brittle, or weathered, it is more likely to experience fairy knots. The overall state of your hair is weakened once your ends split or become tangled. Routine trims or dustings can restore strength in each strand. Your hair will thank you with less frizz and tangles and fewer detangling sessions.
Detangle your hair from root to ends
Detangling your hair can be a long, annoying, time-consuming process. It is the least favorite part of a wash day, and it can lead to putting it off until the next wash. Pre-poos are beneficial, but it’s important to dedicate the needed time to sectioning and detangling your hair. Removing tangles prevents your strands from turning into knots. Divide your hair into manageable sections so you can detangle effectively and not become overwhelmed. An effective detangler to use is Taliah Waajid Curls, Waves, & Naturals The Great Detangler. Not only will it remove the tangles in your hair, but it will also restore moisture and keep your mane soft and manageable.
Protect your ends
When in doubt, protect your hair with a protective style. This goes far beyond wearing braids, weaves, wigs, or crochet hair. Tying your hair up, tucking it under a hat, and restricting it from coming into contact with coats, seat belts, wool sweaters or scarves can reduce the friction that causes knotting.
Properly moisturize and seal
Hydrated hair is less likely to tangle. Keep your ends hydrated, soft, and smooth, because jagged edges almost always find a way to wind around themselves or neighboring hairs. This includes wash-day deep conditionings and sealing your ends with a butter or oil to keep them smooth, tangle-free, and moisturized. An effective product to seal your ends with is Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Caster Oil. The thick consistency will keep your ends healthy. If this oil is too heavy for your hair, try Eden BodyWorks Peppermint Tea Tree Hair Oil. The lighter blend of oils won’t weigh down your ends.
Wear more stretched styles
The more you stretch your hair via a twist-out, braid-out or roller set, the more you reduce fairy knots. Straighter ends have a harder time coiling up. A combination of these tips will drastically decrease the appearance of knots in your hair.
What do you think? What’s your strategy in getting rid of fairy knots?
I used to live by the myth that women with short hair don’t have to deep condition it. As a natural girl, I reserved my deep-conditioning Sundays for hair that could be thrown in a bun. Over the last couple of months, I noticed my hair become drier and drier. I’d wash, oil, and apply hair foam to manipulate my curls. Despite my efforts, my hair would be completely dry and hard to maintain. You’d think I’d know better about deep conditioning since I am a contributor to NaturallyCurly. It wasn’t until my last articles about daily conditioners that I realized I needed to restore moisture into my hair. The myth that I lived by left my ends feeling dry and brittle but that was about to change.
The thing about finding the right hair products is that it becomes a trial and error. You buy a product, give it a try, and then wait to see if it works for you. If it does, great! If it doesn’t, it’s back to the drawing board. In my quest for new products that’ll rehydrate my hair, I came across SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Caster Oil Collection. I decided to sample the Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque, Leave-in Conditioner and Conditioning Design Foam.
I washed my hair with SheaMoisture’s Green Coconut and Activated Charcoal Purifying Shampoo and Conditioner. After rinsing, I worked the restore treatment masque in from my roots to my ends. I let it sit for approximately 20 minutes and then rinsed my hair. I immediately felt a difference in the texture of my curls. They were softer, more defined, and more lively.
I added a small amount of the leave-in conditioner and a few pumps of the conditioning design foam. Adding two types of conditioners was a new concept for me because both products have different consistencies, I wasn’t sure if I should use one or the other. I had been used to using a foam mousse for so long that I didn’t know how my hair would react without it. I was aware that I needed to restore as much moisture as possible so I added the leave-in to my regimen to maximize retention.
After applying, I set my hair with wave rods and let it air dry. Upon removing the rods, I noticed a huge difference in my hair. It was softer, my ends weren’t frizzy, and my curls were defined. In the past, I washed my every two to three days because my ends would become frizzy and unmanageable. Although I knew washing it too often was counterproductive, it was the only solution to maintaining my curls. After using the Jamaican Black Castor Oil products, I was able to manage my hair for a week!
Overall, I’m obsessed with the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore collection. It definitely strengthened and restored each strand on my head. I’m happy that I found something that works for my hair. As a 3C and 4A curly girl, I don’t always have the best luck in finding products that work for me. Although I contributed to the damage caused to my hair by not deep conditioning, I was happy to restore it with these amazing products.

For women with curly hair, the right conditioner is vital to maintaining the strength of each strand. A conditioner not only reconstructs your curls to be healthy, but it also restores moisture, prevents damage, combats breakage, and adds shine and luster to your hair. Daily shampooing can be destructive because it strips your hair of needed oils and nutrients. Using daily conditioners helps to continuously rebuild your mane, strand by strand.

A child’s foundation begins at home, and is further developed in the school system. In the household, children learn core values, manners, self-worth, and much more. School can either reinforce those values, or tear them down. Over the years, the education system has done our kids a disservice by implying that their natural hair or protective styles are unprofessional, distracting, a violation of dress code, unsanitary, and unruly. The traditional and cultural foundation that parents work so hard to establish can be destroyed the minute a school administrator chooses to focus on hair, rather than education.
Protective styles are more than just a staple in the black community. Braids, extensions, and loccs have traditional and cultural roots to people of color. Today, braids and extensions help protect our hair, and eliminate constant manipulation and styling. For school children, braids serve as a low-maintenance style that can last for 1-2 months.
In 2017, fifteen-year-old sisters Mya and Deanna Cook were given detention and banned from Latin Club, a sports banquet, and cross country at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, Massachusetts, for wearing box braids. According to the school’s handbook, the teens violated the dress code policy which prohibits hair extensions.
“It makes me feel horrible that the school won’t let me wear my hair,” Deanna told NBC news. “The school doesn’t appreciate my culture, which is my hair, and it makes me feel like they just want us out more than just for the reason of our hair. It’s our skin color that they want out of the school.”
The sisters were prohibited from participating in all extracurricular activities until the braids were removed from their hair. They are taking a stand against the school by maintaining their hairstyles. “We’ve been at the school for 11 years, I’m not going to leave just because they don’t like my hair or my culture, I’m still staying,” Deanna said. “I don’t care if they wanna throw me out, I’m not leaving without a fight either.”
At the risk of more detentions and suspensions, the Cook sisters stuck to their guns so that school kids after them can wear braids, without being harassed by school administrators. Their perseverance paid off, with school administrators eventually relenting and suspending the controversial rules.
Embedded content: https://twitter.com/shaunking/status/1029754753373356032In August 2018, 6-year-old Clinton Stanley, Jr., was turned away on his first day of school because of a rule in the handbook of A Book’s Christian Academy in Apopka, Florida, that says all boys should wear hairstyles that don’t fall below the ears. The school stood by their policy and offered a solution that involved Clinton unenrolling from the school. He could re-enroll only if he cut his locs. His father declined the offer and took him to a new school that welcomed him, and his hair.
Embedded content: https://www.facebook.com/steven.fennidy/videos/10214859474753091/One week later, 11-year-old Faith Fennidy violated Christ the King Parish School’s policy that states students cannot wear extensions or hairpieces in their hair. Although the student was not expelled or suspended from the New Orleans school, her parents felt it necessary to pull Faith from the school for having such an absurd policy.
There are many of these situations that go undocumented. Some parents appease the handbook and remove the hairstyles that cause an unnecessary disruption, while others endure the fight to make a change in what is seen as inappropriate. There is a clear lack of cultural understanding when it comes to how people of color style their hair. Situations like this take the focus off of education, and redirects it towards a standard of beauty that is not inclusive to the black community. What are we teaching young children if we tell them their natural hair, or protective style that has cultural roots, is not acceptable?
