When you’re making the decision to return your hair to its natural state you have two primary options: transitioning or cutting. The latter, known in the natural hair community as THE BIG CHOP, is the fastest way to achieving 100% natural hair.
It may not always suit everyone, but going through with the Big Chop can be one of the most incomparable moments on your natural hair journey.
Just Do It!
It’s hair and it WILL grow back. If you are weighed down with doubt, you don’t want to make a decision you’ll regret. But what I can say is that most of the women I have known who went through with a Big Chop, including myself, will tell you that it’s the most freeing, liberating feeling a woman can have. There’s something about the Big Chop that makes you OWN your natural! When you’ve made the decision to go natural, there’s nothing to it but to do it!
Be Prepared!
You are embarking on a wonderful journey, and it’s best to be prepared before your cut. You should be mentally prepared to start your natural journey. This is a quite drastic personal decision that you have to be sure you want to make. Ask your friends, your stylist and other curlies about their experience and for any advice they’d give to a new natural.
You may also want to inform your spouse, family and friends of your plan, not just so they feel included in your decision, but to gauge their reactions, positive or otherwise. Don’t be discouraged by any negative reactions; just remember that you’e doing this for you. Who knows, you may be the influencing factor for someone you know to go natural too!
You should also prepare your regimen before doing the Big Chop so you aren’t overwhelmed. You won’t have a whole bunch of hair to deal with once you Big Chop, so your routine and the products you use will be very important. Research the brands, products and ingredients you may want to try once you Big Chop, and make sure to keep a journal to record how they worked. You can also record length checks within this journal so that you can track your growth as well.
Keep it Simple!
This also ties in well with being prepared for the Big Chop. Whether you have half an inch or a few inches of hair after your cut, the best thing you can do is keep things simple with your routine and product use. You don’t have to use a ton of products to get your TWA looking right. Since your hair is newly natural, you may not need much beyond a good shampoo, conditioner and a moisturizer.
I know it may be hard to fight the product junkie urge, but you’ll have plenty of time for that once your hair starts gaining length. Using only a few products at a time will also let you figure out what works and what doesn’t. Give your products an opportunity to see if they will work by using consistently for three to four weeks. What may not work for you may work for someone else, so don’t trash those products!
Enjoy It!
Many ladies are nervous to go out into the world with their new haircut, but this is the time to be free! Embrace your TWA! Enjoy your new self!
The TWA stage goes by rather fast after your Big Chop, so now is your opportunity to enhance your current style or even create a new one! Once you are comfortable in your own skin and with your new hair after the Big Chop, your confidence will radiate through your style. So go ahead, buy some fly earrings or other accessories that will highlight your face and fabulous hair!

Final Thoughts
Having Big Chopped twice, I can tell you the feeling is like none other. Even if you decide to transition, you still have an opportunity to experience the refreshing feeling of cutting the remaining relaxed ends from your hair.
It can be a scary sensation not only to cut your hair, but also not knowing how other people will receive you, especially those closest to you. But when it’s all said and done, it’s YOUR hair and YOUR life. Embrace yourself and your hair in all of its natural beauty and enjoy your new journey!
Congratulations, you’ve decided to go natural! Now you get to answer one of the most profound questions within the natural hair community: to transition or go for the Big Chop?
If you’re not quite ready to cut your relaxed ends yet, then welcome to the wonderful world of transitioning! Here are a few tips that should help make transitioning to natural hair a bit smoother. You’ve got a bit of work ahead, but I guarantee it’ll be worth it in the end!
Take Your Time!
The first and most important thing to remember when you decide to transition is to take your time. When I say take your time, I’m not saying you must grow out all of your relaxed ends. Rather, take transitioning at your own pace.
This process can be as short as a few months or stretched out for several years, it all depends on YOU. Only you will know when you’re ready to let go of those straight ends. Take the time to learn your curls, love them and cultivate them, and I’m sure you’ll fall in love.
When you transition on your own terms and no one else’s, you may find that you appreciate your coils and want to set them free sooner than you realized!
Journal Your Progress
This is one area that I wish I could go back and do over. Journaling your progress helps you keep focus on your hair goals and makes them tangible. When you first make the decision to transition to natural hair, you’ll began to see curly coils springing from your roots. You can actually journal this growth and let it be your guide as to when you’ll be ready rock them freely!
Take note of your curl pattern, the density and texture of your new curls, and what products work or don’t work. Oh, and take lots of pictures too! You’ll want a visual look back on your journey, so be sure to document all aspects while you’re transitioning.
Complimentary Styling
When you’re transitioning, you will begin to notice rather quickly two prominent hair textures. Now is the time to find styles that will compliment your transitioning tresses. Often times, it is easy to run to a flat iron to try and match the textures, but this can cause undue stress on your newly forming curls.
There are a wide variety of options to help you style your hair as you transition. If you choose to wear your own hair while styling, you can look to styles like two-strand twists, flat twists, straw sets, roller sets, twist or braid outs, buns and other fabulous curly hairstyles!
Just as you can style your own hair, you can also add extensions to achieve these and other looks as well. You’ll always want to be cautious when getting kinky twists or braid extensions since you don’t want the hair pulled too tightly. Many ladies also choose to transition with wigs and weaves as well. Try a curly or kinky type of hair if you want to achieve a more natural look.
Condition, Condition, Condition!
Keeping your hair conditioned is essential as you are transitioning, especially at the line of demarcation, the weak area where your natural and relaxed hair meet. Deep conditioning will help soften your new growth and strengthen your hair, especially if you are still using heat products. The new hair will need lots of moisture and even your relaxed ends can benefit from the extra dose of love. Try adding in a deep conditioning and/or hot oil treatment weekly. If you do this consistently, you should notice a difference for the better in your hair. Deep conditioning should no longer be just a special treat!
Quick Tips
While transitioning, remember to keep your relaxed ends trimmed regularly, about every four to six weeks. This will help prevent any splits or damage from travelling up the hair shaft to the new growth. Once you start seeing your beautiful curls shining through, you may even consider doing mini chops to help expedite you being able to rock your natural curls sans relaxed ends.

You can successfully transition to natural hair without doing a Big Chop! Transitioning doesn’t have to be hard, and I hope these tips help to shed a bit of light on the process. As you go through this journey, I’m sure you’ll develop your own tips that make it a little less stressful.
Whether you transition for six months or two years, just remember to keep your ultimate hair goal of being natural in mind. Once fully natural, you’ll be certain to appreciate your natural curls in all their glory! Happy transitioning!

Glam, Bam, Thank You Ma’am!
- If you’re working with a twist out, add a bit of oil throughout your hair, focusing on your ends. Darcy’s Botanical’s Coconut Hibiscus Conditioning Oil is light and it comes in a spray bottle which makes application super easy.
- If you’re doing this style on freshly washed hair, use a t-shirt or microfiber towel to soak up some of the water before applying your product. Smooth a leave-in/detangling product like Kinky Curly Knot Today from roots to tip, and then apply your butter on top to seal the moisture in.
- Create a deep part to the side of your choosing. Starting in the back of your head, create a French roll going up from your neck to the middle of your head. You will have loose hair on one side towards the front of your head, with the other side smoothed and pinned in place.
- Sweep the loose hair to the side, then gather the ends and gently secure with hair pins. The hair will still be a bit loose using hair pins, but you can use bobby pins if you like. You can also add additional hair pins to hold the top section more firmly in place.
- Once all the hair is secured, you may add a spritz of Darcy’s Botanicals Herbal Leave-In Conditioning Spritz or your favorite herbal moisturizer on your hair. You can also add a bit a light hold gel to your edges to avoid flyaways.
It may take you as few as ten minutes to create this soft and chic holiday hair style from an existing twist out. Because it is a softer style, you may be able to rock it for a few days to a week without having to refresh it.

Gently wrapping in a satin scarf or donning your satin bonnet to bed at night will help keep the style fresher. To moisturize while in the style, you can spray plain water on your hair then follow with spraying a bit of oil on top to seal the moisture in.
Lots of parties and events are coming your way this holiday season, so why not go for something a little more unique? This double pompadour is a holiday hair style that certainly fits the bill!
MORE: Wavy Holiday Updos or Curly Holiday Updos
The double pompadour is essentially a pompadour and a high bun — a very chic and stylish holiday hair style. This style is so versatile that you can create this on either freshly washed hair or an older twist out. So let your individuality shine and go for the double!
Double, Double, No Toil or Trouble
- Starting with a twist out, spritz your hair with water first to add moisture, and then follow with a butter to lock that moisture in. Karen’s Body Beautiful Butter Love offers loads of moisturizing benefits and does the trick nicely for this style.
- Separate the piece of hair that you’re going to use to create the pompadour in the front and secure with a hair clip.
- Smooth a small bit more of the butter on the back of your hair, focusing on the nape. Pull the remainder of hair up into a high ponytail and secure with a scrunchie. This is going to be the high bun.
- Take the hair in the ponytail and fold back, creating a hump. This can be easier if done in two or three sections in order to create the shape you like. Secure each section with a bobby pin.
- To create the front pompadour, take the front section of hair and roll backwards like you are adding a hair roller, in the direction of the bun. This gives more shape and substance to the pompadour. You can secure the section with either bobby pins or a single hair comb.
- If you like, you can add a bit of gel to the smooth the back and edges of your hair. The medium hold of Curl Junkie Aloe Fix Lite Hair Styling Gel will help to keep frizzies at bay.
- As a quick tip, you can use the end of a rattail comb to “lift” the pompadour and bun to create more height or to even out the sections.
Again, because this holiday hair style is highly adaptable, you can transform an existing twist out or create this from a fresh wash. Creating and securing the high bun and pompadour should take you less than 20 minutes.

All you’ll need are a few bobby pins, a scrunchie and a decorative hair comb or accessory if you choose. Let’s get holiday ready!
Elegance Never Looked So Good
- Starting with a twist out, apply a bit of moisturizing product throughout your hair. A product like Darcy’s Botanicals Peach Kernel Hydrating Milk provides shine and moisture to keep this style soft and flexible.
- Separate a section in the front of your hair like bangs for the flat twists; create three flat twists going down towards your ear.
- Gather the remainder of your hair in a low side ponytail and secure with a scrunchie; create four or more twists from the hair within the ponytail.
- From the hair within the ponytail, pin each twist around to form the shape of your bun. Use bobby pins to secure the twists within the bun.
- Allow the front twists to flow behind your ear, creating a curve over your ear. Secure with a bobby pin above your ear and hid the ends within the bun.
- To finish the style, spritz with an herbal moisturizer like Oyin Handmade Juices & Berries. Not only does this product smell great, it works to moisturize your hair without having to use your hands and creating more frizz.
- As an option, add your decorative hairpin or accessory. If you’re using a hair comb, try adding it behind your bun to add a touch of embellishment. A hairpin would look great in between the twists and the bun itself.
This holiday hair style is super cute and can be a go to style in a time pinch too! This is also a great protective style for the cold winter season since the ends are tucked and secured away from the elements.

Unconventional Meets Classy
Feeling a little bold this holiday season? Take a chance on this distinctive look that is sure to be a knockout at your holiday event. This French braid and pompadour combination is not your typical holiday hair style, but that’s what makes it so appealing. Stand out from the crowd and take a chance on your curls. You’ll be clamoring for pictures while rocking this style!
- This style tends to work best on a twist out because you’ll want lots of volume in the front and the French braid will be a bit fuller in the back. Prior to styling, add a bit of pomade like Darcy’s Botanicals Organic Coconut Butter Styling Pomade to smooth your strands.
- Section off the front as you will be creating the pompadour with this section.
- From the base of your neck start your French braid going up towards the front sectioned area. You can make this braid as loose or as tight as you like, but somewhere in the middle usually works best. Once you come to the top of your head, add a clip to keep the braid secure while you work on the pompadour.
- Flip the front section back as if you were putting it on a hair roller. Hold that piece, and then remove the clip from the braided section. Include the hair from the braided section under the pompadour roll and secure with a few hair pins. Add a bit more pomade to your edges if needed.
- Once the front and the braid are secure, you can go back and add hair pins along the sides to smooth them out. Spritz with Darcy’s Botanicals Herbal Leave-in Conditioning Spritz or your favorite moisturizer.
- You can also add decorative accessories to this look to take it up one more notch. A double hair comb looks great with this style and can also help to add definition between the braid and pompadour.
Braiding upward from the back of your head can be tricky, but it does not have to be perfect. Even still, this style only takes you between 20 to 30 minutes to complete. Remember to use hair pins where you need them.

Yesterday was an awesome hair day, but today is just kind of blah. What can you do to get the most out of your second day hair? Here are a few ideas that can spice up that old style and give you another great hair day. Cheers to fabulous second day hair!
Reclaim Styling
Take that old style and make it new again! Second day hair is usually fuller than your freshly washed hair so take advantage of it. Pull you hair back and enjoy the sunshine with this cool style.
- The half down style is a great way to reclaim an old look and make it new again. Keep it smooth in the front and funky in the back. Use your imagination when creating this style.
- Create a focus point by adding a side part before securing the hair in the back. You can use a non-metal hair clip or even double them up to create an more unique style.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Scrunch through your favorite leave-in product to wake up your waves. Jessicurl Confident Coils Styling Solution will boost your definition while smoothing your tresses.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: You may not have to add much to your hair besides a good spritz of your favorite refresher. Try a product like Darcy’s Botanicals Herbal Leave-In Conditioning Spritz that’s light but moisturizing.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Pass through a bit of moisturizer like Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia before styling. Don’t forget to concentrate on your ends since some of them will be exposed.
Tips – To add another twist to this style, create two sections in the back of your head and use a ponytail holder to secure the top section and leave the bottom loose. Or, try creating a loose flat twist on one side of your head, going into the pulled back section. This second day hair style can be as versatile as you want it to be!
Textured Tresses
Working with your hair on day two may take some special care. When you need some motivation for styling, try a variation of the classic pouf. Piling your hair up and out of the way is always a great way to rock your curls on the second day.
- It doesn’t get better than a big poufy ponytail! This style is super easy to create and allows you some flexibility in making it as wild or as refined as you want it. Remember, no metal in your scrunchie!
- Add a twist to this look by putting a braid or twist across the front of your hair. You could even add another twist to the other side too! This gives another layer of style to your second day look and helps to hide frizz.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Enhance the texture of your curls by using the right products. Curl Junkie Coffee Coco Curl Crème Lite is just light enough to make your curls pop without weighing the hair down.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Keep those frizzy ends in check by giving them a good dose of moisture. Try a product like CURLS Curls Milkshake to soften your hair while banishing those frizzies.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Second day hair should be great, so your concern should just be maintaining the awesomeness. Spray a bit of As I Am CocoShea Spray into your hands then apply throughout your hair. This will give your hair softness and an extra dose of shine.
Tips – A pouf doesn’t have to be plain! You want your curls to shine, so jazz it up and put your own twist on it! Whether you decide to add a twist in the front or not, this style will be easily maintained over the next few days. Use a silk or satin scarf while you sleep and you can get an additional few days from this look.
Crisscross Curls
If you love rocking your twisty curls then why not try this casual chic look as a second day style? Crisscross curls is an alternative to just letting your hair hang out. Your curls are still curly, but the detail in the style makes it a stand out.
- Second day hair may need a little extra help to have it look its best. Ensure that your hair is well hydrated prior to any styling by applying your favorite moisturizing product. This will wake up the curls.
- The crisscross detail easily adds a stylish touch to your second day style. Create three sections in the front of your head: left, middle and right. Leave the middle section to fall towards the back, then cross the left section towards the right, and the right section towards the left. Secure with bobby pins.
- Type 2 (wavy”> Your waves should work well in this style. Rake a bit of AG Hair Cosmetics Foam Weightless Volumizer through your damp hair and allow to air dry. Scrunch the crunch out once your hair is dry to soften the curls.
- Type 3 (curly”> Refresh your curls to get the most out of your second day hair. Try running Karen’s Body Beautiful Hair Nectar or your favorite moisturizer through your hair, then pin the crisscross sections. Don’t neglect your ends!
- Type 4 (kinky”> If you’re rocking a twist out, you will want to add a bit of oil to your hands while creating your sections for the crisscross. This will help keep your curls intact and avoid creating extra frizz. Try Jessicurl Oil Blend for Softer Hair, but just remember a little goes a long way.
Tips – You can add a special touch to this look by using a double hair comb across the crisscross section. And you can even create an additional look for the next day by creating a mini French twist with the loose hair in the back. Whichever way you decide to rock it, make sure it suits your individual style.

The anticipation of Christmas morning can be completely overwhelming! This is especially the case if you are in a large family or have children. These quick and easy curly hair styles can get you through the hectic Christmas morning. Hopefully our tips and hints can make your day a little less stressful and give you a bit of Christmas cheer to boot!
Braided Bun
This is such an awesome style for the holiday season. The braided bun takes the fuss out of styling your hair throughout the day and lets you focus on what is most important. If you’re handy with braiding, this style may take you less than 30 minutes to complete.
- This style is simple to recreate, whether you are working with a few days old style or freshly washed hair. Fresh or not, just make sure your hair is well moisturized prior to styling to keep your hair looking polished. If your hair is dry, refresh your curls with a leave-in spray before braiding. Try Blended Beauty Kick for Curls Aloe Juice Spritz to revive your curls and make them easier to work with.
- Separate your hair into a front and rear section; French braid from the nape going up towards the crown. Pull the rest of the hair into a high ponytail where you then do three to four smaller twists to form the bun itself. Secure the bun with bobby pins.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Apply a light leave-in conditioner throughout the hair while damp and let it air dry since this will help keep frizz formation to a minimum. Try using Design Essentials HCO Leave-In Conditioner and gently comb through your curls for even distribution.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Using a creamy moisturizer throughout your curls will give this style shine and softness. Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia is an excellent choice for this task because it smoothes and moisturizes your hair.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: If you are working with an older twist out, make sure to hydrate your curls before styling with a good butter product. Jane Carter Solution Nourish & Shine will stimulate those coils and make creating the braid and twists so much easier.
Tips – To finish this style you may want to add a small amount of gel to the edges to keep any flyaways under control. Coupled with a soft bristle brush, As I Am Smoothing Gel works great at this task. With proper night time care using a satin scarf, this style can last for a week or longer.
Easy Breezy Curls
Your curls want to be free so let them! This easy Christmas morning curly hair style is effortless, using only a couple of hair pins and a few minutes of your time. You’ll be ready to open presents and celebrate in no time!
- Stay true to your curls on Christmas and rock them loose! It doesn’t have to take all day to fix your hair if you just let them do their own thing. Your main concern is going to be keeping them in place for the day.
- Keep your coils under control by adding a serum or pomade to the finished look. This will help keep the frizz at bay and let your curls stay picture perfect throughout the day.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: If you’re rocking freshly washed loose curls, try using a Curl-Ease Towel to speed up your drying time. By letting your hair air dry, you can avoid creating extra frizz. And you can finish putting yourself together while you wait, too!
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Remember to add a bit of moisturizer to your hair while styling. A good product to consider is Innersense Quiet Calm Curl Control since it will not only soften your hair, but help define your curls as well.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Since you’re probably rocking an older twist out, try spraying a bit of leave-in conditioner to wake up your curls. Oyin Handmade Greg Juice will moisturize your curls and hydrate them with hair loving herbs and botanicals.
Tips – Since it’s the holiday season, you can secure your curls with a cute headband. Add to your holiday spirit and go for something Christmas themed or sparkly. You can definitely get a few days out of this look without having to restyle. Just make sure you either “pineapple” at night or use your satin pillowcase.
Curly Side Bun
Looking for no- fuss curly hair styles? Achieve a boho chic look with a messy side bun in no time at all. It’s easy to create, and you’ll look like a million bucks. The goal is to keep you and your curls comfortable on Christmas morning.
- Keep your curls happy by giving them lots of love this Christmas. Don’t fasten your ponytail holder too tight with this style. Your curls will appreciate being a little more relaxed with this loose bun.
- You can add to the look by creating a side part before securing the loose hair. Let some hair hang out in the front to keep the look more casual if you like, if not you can pull it all back. This style is all about simplicity.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Scrunch some of your favorite styling product through your hair while it’s damp to give it more body. If your hair is falling flat at the crown, you can add duckbill clips to lift your roots and add volume.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Try adding a smoothing product before pulling your hair back. Oyin Handmade Shine & Define Styling Serum will give you light hold while adding shine and curl definition.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: If your hair is shorter, you can improvise the bun by using hair pins to secure the hair within the bun itself. Use extra bobby pins where you need them to keep the style in place.
Tips – This style may not take you more than 15 minutes to complete, but it should last you well through the Christmas day and a few days after. If you have loose hair in the front, pin that piece down and wrap your hair loosely in a satin scarf before going to bed. You can always refresh in the morning with a light leave-in conditioner.

What curly hairstyles will you be rocking for Christmas this year?
The weather is turning cold and there’s always lots to do around the house in preparation for the holiday season. You need to be able to get through that to-do list without spending hours on your hair. These simple curly hair styles will keep your hair out of your way whether you’re working hard or just lounging at home.
Side Braid
Braids can be one of the best go to styles when you’re staying at home. No matter if the weather is naughty or nice, this style will play well even if you do decide to venture outside. You’ll look effortless and pulled together to tackle all of your tasks in no time!
- Messy is OK! You are staying in the house, but it doesn’t mean your hair has to be left undone. You can braid all the hair together or leave a few pieces out in the front depending on how you feel.
- Easy does it with this style! Add a deep side part and sweep the hair around to one side. You want the braid loose and flirty so don’t braid too tightly. Plus this will keep unnecessary tension off of your hairline. Remember to use a ponytail holder without metal.
- Type 2 (wavy”> This style is perfect whether you’re working with freshly washed hair or not. You may want to add a bit of styling agent like CURLS Cashmere Curls to keep your hair soft and any flyaways under control.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: To keep the hair smooth, add a bit of soft hold product to smooth the hair as you braid. CURLS Curl Soufflé will add shine while giving soft hold to your edges and the braid itself.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: If you’re working with an old twist out, try using a pomade type product to elongate your curls for the braid. Carol’s Daughter Macadamia Hold and Control Smoother can give you all the hold you need.
Tips – Instead of a scrunchie, try using a ribbon to secure the end of your braid. Or, if you want to be even more creative, thread a festive ribbon through the braid and tie a neat little bow at the end. Since you’re staying indoors, this style will pretty much last you as long as you need it to. Tie on a satin scarf before bed and you’re good to go!
Top Knot
This look is hot this season! Sort of like a bun, the top knot is casual enough to wear when you stay at home, but fabulous enough to take you through a night on the town! If you decide to venture out of the house, this effortless style can be created in minimal steps and have you ready for the world
- Pull your hair into a high ponytail, then split it into three or four sections. Twist each section separately, then wrap each piece around the base of the ponytail. Use bobby pins to secure.
- Add your own flavor once the knot is secured. You can use a headband to hold the hair back, and if you need, add a bit of gel to slick down your edges. Or you can use your satin scarf to tie your hair down which will keep this style sleek throughout the day.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: A paste or molding type product may work well to keep your hair slick while in this top knot. Apply Original Moxie Hair Bling High Shine Pomade to your edges and ends to keep them smooth.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Apply your favorite styling product to your hair prior to pulling your hair into the ponytail. Darcy’s Botanicals Organic Coconut & Aloe Moisture Pudding will add moisture and aid with creating this sleek style.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: You may want to two strand twist each section before wrapping it. A product like MyHoneyChild Twist Out Crème will nourish your tresses and can be used to smooth your edges down.
Tips – You can keep going all day without giving your curly hair style a second thought. An alternative to jazz up this style is by throwing on a cute scarf or wrap. This fancy free look can be maintained for a few days by utilizing your satin scarf at night.
Casual French Twist
You can have some style while staying in the house! The French roll is an easy curly hair style to complete with minimal time or effort. And since you’re staying in the house it doesn’t have to be perfect. Now is a great time to experiment with making this style a little more casual.
- This style is so simple! You’ll need a few bobby pins, your favorite moisturizer, and a little bit of creativity. Pull your hair back like you are going to put it in a scrunchie. Instead, you’re going to tuck and roll into the French twist. Secure the twist with bobby pins or a large hair comb.
- You can create this look on freshly washed hair or from an old style. Working with an old style will give you more volume to work with and make it easier to create your twist. You can even leave some loose curls out in the front to make it more unique!
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: If you’re seeking a bit more height for this style, try teasing the hair slightly before pinning into place. Spraying the finished look with a bit of Curlisto Structura Spray will help keep this carefree style in place.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Your hair may be suffering from the “halo” of frizz from an old style, but let that play to your advantage. This look can carry a bit of frizzies without looking too crazy, just make sure it’s still moisturized. Add extra bobby pins where needed.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: This style lends itself well to stretched or shrunken coils. No matter which way you’re rocking them, apply a good creamy styling product like Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner prior to securing the twist.
Tips – Since you’re staying in the house feel free to play with the style and make it your own. Now is not the time to be demure — be playful with it, leave a few wisps of hair out, add some pretty hair pins. It’s your hair! Once you’ve found your style, preserve it by wrapping a satin scarf loosely around your head before bed.

Are random stay-at-home days more a habit than a luxury to you? Find out how to match your curly styles with your at-home lifestyle!
Final Thoughts
Perfecting your favorite curly hair styles, or trying out new ones, is a great way to use your at-home time. What do you do with your hair on lazy, stay-at-home days?
The holiday party season is upon us, so it’s time to start thinking about your own company party. Whether you work in corporate America or retail, your hair should always be a reflection of who you are. Make sure your hair represents who you are while you mingle with your coworkers. Let your curls spread some holiday cheer!
Casual Gathering
If your company holiday party is a casual event, you may want to opt for curly hair styles with less fuss, more fun! Keeping it simple will take away the stress of doing your hair so you can focus on the festivities.
- Don’t overdo your ‘do! You don’t want to be the center of attention because people are talking about your drastic new hair style! If you normally wear it super curly, try stretching your curls. If you wear looser curls try a bit tighter spirals
- You want to enjoy the party so make sure your style is not going to get in the way. Mix and mingle with your coworkers while letting your hair be your main accessory. Pull a bit of hair off your face and add a headband or hair pin if you like.
- Type 2 (wavy”> If you have fine curls, try boosting the volume! Start with a volumizing shampoo like Elucence Volume Clarifying Shampoo to add some volume while cleansing. Add a light moisturizer or mousse once your hair is clean and use a diffuser to speed up the drying process.
- Type 3 (curly”> Your main concern may be keeping frizz at bay, especially if you’re not working with freshly washed hair. Add a leave-in conditioner like Curl Junkie Curl Assurance Smoothing Lotion to revive your curls and keep the frizz at bay.
- Type 4 (kinky”> When you’re trying to stretch your hair without heat, your best option is to twist large sections of your hair prior to your event. Use a pomade like Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade on dry hair to increase softness while giving you the length you desire.
Tips – You can add some pizazz to your normal style and still keep true to yourself. Add a bit of glosser to your finished look to boost the shine factor. To maintain the look if you’re wearing your hair down, you can “pineapple” before bed by pulling your hair up into a very high, loose ponytail.
A Formal Affair
When you’re attending formal holiday parties, your attire, makeup and hair should all complement each other. Fancy events necessitate fancy curly hair styles, so pull out the stops with a classic up-do. This style will be a hit at any posh party!
- Classic styles are always a hit at office holiday parties. Take your curls up and back with this sleek look. Curly girls can rock this look with a ponytail holder and a few bobby pins.
- Your hair should not detract from the total package; instead it should add polish to your look. The understated elegance should complete your ensemble. The beauty in this style is that it doesn’t have to be perfect to still be gorgeous.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Add a lightweight mousse to your hair while damp and allow to air dry. To create a more tousled look, don’t pull your hair back too tightly. Leave a bit of hair looser at the crown so the style reflects a more effortless look.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Smooth the sides of your hair back with a bit of Curlisto Control II Gel to create a sleek look. When fixing the back, allow some of your curls to remain free. This gives a bit of whimsy to this elegant style. Spray a bit of Jessicurl Gelebration for hold.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: This style can be easily salvaged from an old twist out. Just smooth a bit of moisturizer like MyHoneyChild Coconut Hair Milk throughout. Once you have the hair secured in the back, you can take the end of a rattail comb to gently lift the front section to your liking. Finish the look with a bit of shine serum.
Tips – This style can be accessorized in numerous ways, just make sure it doesn’t compete with your outfit. You can choose to dress up the look with simple button earrings or dramatic with drop earrings. You will want to use a satin scarf to secure the style at night.
Statement Style
Give your normal style a little twist for this special occasion. Having a statement style will work great no matter if you’re going to a formal or casual event. The key to making a great impression is to be confident in yourself and that confidence can be reflected in your hair style. Now, are you ready to party?
- Stand out at the party with a bold style! Take your normal style up a notch this holiday season with an asymmetrical look. This style is easy to create and shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes.
- Take a few bobby pins so make sure your style is not going to get in the way. Mix and mingle with your coworkers while letting your hair be your main accessory. Pull a bit of hair off your face and add a headband or hair pin if you like.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: When you’re starting with freshly washed hair, make sure you use a curl cloth to dry your hair to help keep your curls together. This will also help reduce additional frizz and speed your drying time, too. Run a light hold product like Mop C-Curl Defining Cream through your hair to keep the style looking fresh.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: To make sure this style lasts the night, use pomade throughout your hair to control the curls. Curlisto Finishing Pomade is a great option because it aids with definition and imparts shine too. Use extra pins to secure the hair in the back if needed.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Working with a fresher twist out is best because you’ll have the volume and shape that makes creating this style super easy. Add a bit of oil, like Karen’s Body Beautiful Heavenly Jojoba Hair Oil, to your hands while shaping this style to help prevent additional frizz and smooth the hair at the same time.
Tips – Don’t be afraid to use as many bobby pins as you need to hold this style together. You can even add a sparkly hair comb in the back to add a bit more flare. This style can be kept easily with sleeping on a satin pillow case at night. You can even create a second day style by securing the loose hair into a side bun.

From luxurious new deep conditioners to new fall scents, what’s a better excuse to try new products?
Curly Hair Products
Curly girls have to know how to get the most out of their hair! Being able to get multiple looks out of one style can definitely come in handy! When you think your hair just can’t go another day, try one of these curly hair styles to prolong your look and breathe a breath of fresh air into your hair.
Last Leg Hair
I often admire my hair on its last leg; it’s usually full and very soft, with loose beachy waves. The key here is to make sure your hair is moisturized to help cut down on the last day frizz. Add a neat headband or other accessory and you’re ready to go!
- Take your hair up! When your hair is feeling tired, give it a rest and let your accessories do the work. A scrunchie is your hair’s best friend on days when you’re working with an old style.
- Go bold! This will add some spice to your last leg hair. Try a headband when you opt for a poof or a high ponytail. Bright colors, flowers, sparkly diamonds — pick what works for you and rock it!
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Since your curls may be a little flat by now, try adding a liquid leave-in product to your hair. DevaCurl Set It Free can help with reactivating your curls, leaving them soft and frizz free. Use your diffuser to bring some volume back to your hair.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Even though you’re on your last good hair day, you may want to refresh your curls for this look. Before putting your hair in the scrunchie, add a bit of moisturizer to your curls. Try Curl Junkie Curl Assurance Smoothing Lotion to cut the frizz and give your curls a treat.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Your curls may be pretty loose by now, so try adding a water based product to wake them back up. Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia will do just that, imparting a bit of softness and shine at the same time.
Tips: Don’t throw away those old stretched out headbands! You can actually double them up to create a “double” headband affect. It lets you reuse something that would normally end up in the landfill and it keeps you from wasting money. Reduce, reuse and recycle!
Half and Half
S0 the back of your hair is behaving but the front is giving you fits? Half and half curly hair styles let you leave the back alone and just fix the front. This shouldn’t take more than a couple minutes and a few determined bobby pins. You’ll be back to having a great hair day in no time!
- Starting with a bit of moisturizer will help give you the sleekness that can be achieved with this style. Applying a light product won’t add too much more buildup, plus using a downward, smoothing motion will help your hair fall in line.
- The front a middle sections are the focus for this look. Creating the pompadour in the front adds height and drama to the look, while the middle bump adds another level to the chic, trendy style. Tuck your ends under and secure with a few bobby pins.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: To give your hair some much needed lift, try adding a volumizing mousse to give your hair some extra volume. This will help with creating the front and middle sections. Adding a finishing spray like Curlisto Structura Spray will give your hair hold and prolong the style.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Secure the middle section with a thin scrunchie to give your hair a boost. Apply a light pomade like Darcy’s Botanicals Coconut Butter Pomade to the sides to help smooth your tresses. Flip that section back to create the pompadour and secure with a couple of bobby pins.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Volume usually isn’t an issue since your hair is probably already thick and full by this time, so now it’s time to smooth the frizzies away. Add a moisturizing product like Oyin Handmade’s Whipped Pudding to add shine and softness. Don’t forget to moisturize your ends!
Tips: To add to the sleekness of this style, try using a hair comb to secure the front pompadour. Roll the front section backwards and push your hair comb into place. If you want to rock this style for another day, just tie on a satin scarf at night. You can pin the loose hair up with a bobby pin, or even put it in a large, loose twist for more body the next day. You can always wash when you’re ready!
Meeting in the Middle
When you’re done rocking your fabulous loose waves or twist out, but not quite ready to wash and style again, what do you do? Throw in some hair pins, a scrunchie and a few minutes and you’re ready to face the world. Whether you’re running late to work or heading to a dinner date, your hair will be the least of your worries with this classy style.
- This simple style can take many forms — it’s all in where you place the pins. Using hair pins will allow you to pull and secure the hair, unlike bobby pins which may squash your curls. Try pulling the hair in from each side into the middle and secure with a pin.
- You still want this to be a relatively smooth style, so try adding a moisturizer that will help fight frizz and moisturize your curls. Adding a light leave-in conditioner prior to styling will ensure your hair looks neat and well put together.
- Type 2 (Wavy”> If you have fine, wavy hair, you can count on a mousse product to give you shine while controlling frizz. Try Jane Carter Solution Wrap and Roll to help keep the flyaways under control. Scrunch your hair with your Hair Dry Hand Glove to speed up style and speed up drying time before pinning into place.
- Type 3 (Curly”> Try not to separate your bigger curl. Having chunkier curls will work to your benefit when pinning the hair in the middle. Use a leave-in conditioner spray like Blended Beauty Kick for Curls Aloe Juice Spritz to moisturize and tame the frizz without disturbing the curls too much.
- Type 4 (Kinky”> Since your hair is thicker, try creating your sections before pinning. Smooth a small amount of a moisturizing product like Oyin Handmade Hair Dew throughout your hair. Then, working with a small section at a time, twist each piece before pinning into place.
Tips: If you want to get a second day out of this style, try applying a spray gel product once you’re done styling. If you want some extra shine, try a few sprays of As I Am CocoShea Spray or your favorite shine boosting spray. Sleep lightly because even with a satin bonnet this style can be crushed easily during sleep.

Curly hair, and curlies, LOVE quick and easy styles that look great in a matter of minutes. Try these quick & easy curly hair styles that anyone can do!
I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Do What Comes Naturally workshop held on November 6 in Houston, Texas. This hair event was coordinated by none other than Uncle Funky’s Daughter, one of the premier natural hair salons in the Houston area. Established in 2003, they are a sustainable and chemical free salon, offering services to cultivate and pamper your curls. This curly hair event, done in an ever so Funky fashion, aimed to “empower women to free themselves, embrace their natural beauty and follow their passion.” I’d say they accomplished their mission!
The Rice Hotel provided the perfect backdrop for this cultured hair event celebrating natural freedom. Upon entry to the building we were greeted by lovely hostesses and directed up a grand staircase to enjoy all of the activities of the evening. There was a space set up with art installations from local artists and there were also tasty hors d’oeuvres and beverages being served.
Next, we were welcomed into a vast meeting area where there were numerous tables, activity stations, vendor booths for us to visit. They had even created a boutique area for us to shop! You may not know, but Uncle Funky’s Daughter is not only a salon, but a chic boutique where it’s easy to find all things fashionable. We perused the many tables and racks stocked with all sorts of clothes and accessories as we conversed among ourselves about how fantastic the fashions were. I mean, who doesn’t like shopping! If you think that’s good then keep on reading, I haven’t even made it to the main stage yet!
As I went around the room, I viewed many of the patrons interacting with the vendors. I bought a pair of handcrafted earrings from ChariT’s Inspirational Creations, the Lamik Beauty team offered free mini makeovers and beauty consultations. Green Seed Vegan kept the green drink shots coming, and I stood in line for a good 20 minutes for my fabulously free Minx manicure by Queen Minx. I also booked an appointment to have my eyebrows pampered after having a free consultation at the Eyebrow Energy booth. Many visitors also took the time to create artistic paintings and vision boards at those interactive stations. We even got to be part of the Supernatural Power Photo shoot, capturing individual personalities with our very own natural signature phrases. And that’s STILL not all!
Tonya Reed, co-founder of Uncle Funky’s Daughter, showed us how to use their top products during several product demonstrations on a few different types of hair. She took the time to answer questions from us in the audience, and believe me, there were many! Most of the ladies watching the demo primarily wanted to know what types and how much product to use while styling and how to maintain the style. Tonya was very helpful and informative, and we all appreciated her candor. After the demonstration we were then energized by a few quick Zumba sessions, which really got the crowd moving!
I really enjoyed this hair event! All types of naturals were represented, from the newly natural to veterans, from 2a to 4c, short hair, long hair, locs, and all things in between! I especially loved seeing all the different hairstyles and fashions of the attendees. It was a joy networking and meeting new people, and generally just seeing people enjoy themselves. If you ever have an opportunity to attend a natural hair or health expo don’t pass it up; it really is an awakening experience. Events like these encourage people to be free, be themselves, be healthy, and to “Do What Comes Naturally.”

What better way to ring in the new year than with a fabulous hairstyle? Since you’ll be enjoying the events of the night, you want to make sure your hair to stay fresh without too much fuss. Make it a night to remember with one of these fresh curly updos! You’ll appreciate the camera flash knowing your hair is on point. Let the ball drop!
Classic Curly Updo
Who says you can’t still rock curls and dance the night away? This style lets you stay sophisticated while you party, without too much worry of the curls falling out of place. It shouldn’t take more than a few moments to get you ready for your New Year’s Eve celebration.
- Sculpting is the key to pulling off curly updos without letting them fall flat. Adding a product with hold while styling will ensure your curls last all night long. Try finishing with a spray gel to add extra hold.
- This style lends itself well to many different hair lengths. If your hair is longer, simply pin the hair in the back up and off your neck. You can play with different variations such as doing a French roll in the back or bringing the hair forward to create the loose curls in the front.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Add some volume to the top portion of your hair. Smooth a light leave in product through your hair and use clips to lift the roots. Try Jessicurl Gelebration Spray as a final step to provide hold and define your curls without weighing them down.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: When you’re working with curly hair, you want to make sure it pops! Try adding a moisturizing product like Karen’s Body Beautiful Hair Nectar to smooth and define your curls. Pin a cute hair clip in the back and you’re ready to shine!
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Nothing is sexier than a head full of shiny curls, so adding a pomade or glosser spray to your finished style will give you the sheen you need. A quick tip is to use the pomade before twisting and add a bit more on the ends before untwisting for maximum shine. Original Moxie Hair Bling Shine Pomade should do the trick!
Tips – If you want to wear this style in the evening, you may want to twist the loose front section during the day, or at least a few hours before the event. That way your curls will have the max amount of definition. This look can last a couple days if you wrap your hair with a satin scarf before bedtime. To refresh, spritz with a bit of leave-in or diluted conditioner and your curls will be back in action.
Curly & Sleek
Talk about sleek and party-ready curly updos! High curly buns are easily adaptable from the day to the nighttime New Years Eve celebrations. You can enjoy the festivities and bring in the New Year without worrying about your curls falling out of place.
- This is not your traditional bun! Let your curls give character to this style, whether you have tight or loose curls. The key is to allow your curls to fall into place then pin them down. Feel free to make your bun as big as you’d like!
- Up the sleek factor! Add a sparkly headband or hair clip to make this style really shine! Use a pomade to smooth your edges and accentuate the curly bun. Try a natural product like Kinky Curly Gloss Pomade to give you shine and tame the frizzies.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: To up the volume in your bun, try adding a volumizing mousse to your damp hair. Air drying is best, but you can use a diffuser to help cut down on the drying time. Try not to touch your hair until it’s dry or you can create unnecessary frizz.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: You may want to separate your curls a bit to create a more fabulous bun. Just make sure to add a bit of product before separating to avoid extra frizz. Try applying a small amount of a light leave-in like Darcy’s Botanicals Peach Kernel Hydrating Milk to keep your curls defined.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Time to rock your kinky curls is here and now! If your hair isn’t long enough to create a bun then improvise! You can sport a curly poof or if your hair is a bit longer try sculpting a faux bun by pinning the hair around to form a bun.
Tips – Tie a scarf around your head to smooth the edges once the bun is created. This will help the style to stay sleek longer, and then just remove before your event. The hair can be secured the same way at night to preserve the style for New Year’s Day.
Side Swept Swirls
Want to show off your curls for the big night? Go for an asymmetrical look and grab all the attention in the room! This side swept style is sure to steal the show, allowing your curls to shine. The key to this style is to embrace your natural tresses while minimizing frizz.
- The loose wavy curls are a great quick and easy style! The side part accentuates the side swept hair and shows off your choice of earrings for the evening!
- You can use hair pins to create the swoop in the front and to help control the curls on the side. Use a light hold pomade to smooth the hair down. Pull the hair over to the side and secure with a few more hair pins to keep the hair in place.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Use a microfiber towel to dry your hair, then add a volumizing product throughout the hair. If you need to, use a diffuser to speed the drying time, and then take a section of hair at a time to sculpt the curls by adding a bit of styling paste to each section of waves. Lightly finger through the waves and you’re ready to go.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: To create the loose waves without the frizz, try twisting large sections of hair using a butter or pomade. Bee Mine Bee Hold Curly Butter is great for providing hold while still defining the curls. Quick style tip: the longer you let the twists stay in, the more definition you will attain.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: To get the most out of this style, smooth the hair to the side and pin in place. Then once secured, create a few large twists on the loose hair using an oil based product since it should not cause the curls to shrink. Try Jane Carter Nourish & Shine to curb frizz and increase the shine.
Tips – This may be a relatively quick and easy style, but it should last you to the ball drop and beyond! If you want to try and get second day hair from this style, try putting your hair in a loose braid and use your satin pillowcase at night. Put a bit of light oil on your hands before taking the braid down in the morning, fluff, and you’re ready to go for the New Year!

What is your ringlet resolution for 2012? Let us help your find one and keep it!
You may have heard them referred to as finger coils, comb coils, or just plain old coils, but this curly style packs a punch! Coils and coil outs are essentially a single strand twists and single strand twist outs.
The coils themselves can be done with a just a rattail comb (or even your fingers”> and your favorite styling pudding or pomade. You can wear your coils and subsequent coil-out for a few days to a week at a time. Even better, a coil out looks great on many hair lengths, whether you’re rocking a TWA or longer curls. So let’s get started!
Get the Coil Out Curly Hairstyle
- Coils and coil outs look best on freshly washed and conditioned hair. A key tip for pulling off this look is to thoroughly detangle before styling. This makes the actual creation of the coils a much smoother process. Apply a liberal amount of leave-in conditioner to your entire head.
- Depending on the size you want your coils to be, take your rattail comb and separate a small section of hair to work with. A smaller section (about a quarter of an inch or so”> will yield a straw-set type curl, while a larger section (maybe an inch square”> will give you a larger coil and coil out.
- Take a section of your hair and add a small bit of your favorite styling product from root to tip. You may find a product like Darcy’s Botanicals Organic Coconut & Aloe Moisture Pudding well suited for this style. It offers the moisture you need plus a soft hold. Comb through for even coverage.
- Starting close to your scalp, gently pull the comb through your hair and slowly roll the comb around. Pull down slightly as you twist the comb; this creates the coil itself. Make sure to take your time until you get the hang of it or you could tangle the hair. Remember, TWIST and PULL. Continue twisting the comb until you get through the ends. Repeat the process across your entire head.
- If you’re using your fingers you’ll still want to begin by combing through the ends. Then, begin twisting the hair, rolling the twist around your index finger. You still want the coil to be tight at the scalp. Smooth between your fingers as you reach the end of the coil, using your thumb and index fingers to twist the ends. Repeat the process across your entire head.
- Now that you’re done with the coils themselves, you can let them air dry or dry under a hooded dryer. You can wear the coils as a style, or you can proceed with the coil out process.
- When you’re ready for the coil out, start by adding a tiny bit of oil on your hands. You’re going to separate the individual coils into smaller sections, like separating your twists for a twist out.
- Take a coil and add a bit of your favorite oil or butter to the ends to help prevent frizz while pulling the coils apart. Gently stretching the coil down will make it easier to find the natural separations in your hair. Smooth the little coils through the ends and give it a little twirl on your finger. Voila! You may find that creating three to four sections within each coil will give you a fuller look. Continue to separate the rest of your coils.
The nighttime routine for your coils is pretty simple. Regardless of whether you’re still wearing the coils or have transitioned to the coil out, tie a satin scarf on at bedtime to protect the coils and keep them fresh. Refresh the coils in the morning with a spritz of leave-in conditioner and you’ll be out the door in no time.

Depending on how small you do your coils and how much hair you have, this style can be accomplished within one to two hours, but may last you a week or more.
Want to rock your curls with a twist on traditional style? Well, go ahead and embrace those curls and get a little twisted! Carefree and effortless, curly twist hairstyles can easily offer a change in your everyday hair routine and put your curls on the center stage. Happy styling!
Let Your Curls Down
This style focuses on one of the hottest hair trends, the twisted headband. Who knew something so easy could be so chic! Of course, you could always opt for a traditional headband, but creating one with your own curls is way cooler!
- Starting with the front twist take a section of hair above your ears and two-strand twist to the ends. Bring that twisted section across to the opposite side and pin behind your ear. Repeat this on the other side.
- Let your curls hang loose in the back. The emphasis on this style is casual chic, so you don’t have to worry with getting the curls perfect. Sometimes it’s easier to just let them do their own thing!
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: If you have finer curls, try scrunching your hair with a microfiber towel like the Curls Like Us Curl Cloths. This will help reduce frizz and even cut your drying time down! Using a light-hold gel like DevaCurl AnGEL will give you definition, curl control and shine.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: You may want a bit of length with this style, so try dry twisting the back section in four to eight chunky twists. Adding an oil-based moisturizer while twisting will help smooth and stretch the hair; try Jane Carter Solution Nourish & Shine to impart shine and moisture.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: This style looks great on a twist out, whether it’s a fresh or a week old! To get both hold and to keep frizz at bay, try twisting with Bee Mine Bee Hold Curly Butter. This multitasking product will give you soft hold and amazing curl definition.
Tip – You don’t have to sacrifice sleep for this style! Use a satin scarf to keep the front twists smooth while you sleep. You can also keep the front twists pinned and pull the back up in a high ponytail for second or third day hair.
All Twisted Up
This style is an adaptation of a chignon, just a little more curl friendly! Sometimes you may not want all of your curls hanging loose, so what better way to still show them off? Add an extra touch of elegance to your hairstyle collection with this simple updo.
- Bobby pins are your friends when creating this curly twist style. The beauty of this look is that you can place your ringlets where you want them. Use as many bobby pins as needed.
- A little messy is okay! This style is very forgiving and won’t require spending hours to sculpt. Your natural curls, with a bit of a holding product, are the stars of this style! Remember, you still want a bit of playfulness with your curls.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Start this style by adding volume throughout your hair. Try AG Foam Weightless Volumizer to give your hair shape and body, while keeping the strands smooth and shiny. Work it through your hair from root to tip, then use a diffuser to set the curls.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: Try twisting your hair in several medium to large twists to create looser, wavier curls. Using a good detangler/leave-in conditioner is critical to pulling off this tousled style. Kinky Curly Knot Today is an excellent choice since it will moisturize your strands and create a smooth base for your twists.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Twist hairstyles like this work better if you dry twisting your hair into several chunky twists first. Using an oil-based product to twist, like Karen’s Body Beautiful Butter Love, will give you shine and definition. When you release the twists, just pin the curls where you like.
Tip – Since this is not a very structured style, it may not last more than a day or two. The beauty is in the ease and simplicity of pinning the curls off of the face and neck. Even if you take the style down, sleeping on a satin pillowcase will keep the curls from being crushed and make it a bit easier to restyle the next morning.
Twisted Pony
This look can be easily adapted in a multitude of ways, and is a simple and classy style that works for all hair types. The twisted front section adds a touch of whimsy, and you can play with different variations of the ponytail to suit your taste.
- It’s all in the front. A sleek flat twist across the front of this style sets it apart from just any regular ponytail. Starting with a side part and a medium section of hair, gently twist the section, grabbing hair from the crown to make the flat twist.
- This is a sleek look, so make sure you keep the twist low profile. Finish the twist behind your ear and use a couple of bobby pins to secure. Sweep the remainder of your hair into a ponytail holder and allow the hair to fall as it may.
- Type 2 (Wavy”>: Attain your best look when starting with clean hair, diffusing to add maximum volume and using clips at the root of your hair for extra lift. Using a mousse product will help your curls to stay in place, just remember not to disturb the curls too much.
- Type 3 (Curly”>: You may find this style easier to complete on damp hair. Using a light moisturizer like Curl Junkie Coffee Coco Curl Crème Lite will enhance the curls and help tame the frizzies without weighing the hair down. Add a bit more product to the ends to keep them nice and moisturized.
- Type 4 (Kinky”>: Achieve this style by transforming older twist hairstyles. Once the front twist and ponytail are in place, you may section the ponytail into 3 or 4 large twists, using a creamy moisturizing product like Karen’s Body Beautiful Creamylicious. This will add shine to the curls, lock in moisture, and once the twists are released you’ll have soft, cascading twists.
Tip – Want an alternative to the ponytail? This style can easily be transformed into a stylish side bun using a few bobby pins. Twirl the ponytail around into a bun and pin in place, or if you want a more playful look, split the ponytail in two or three sections, twist each section loosely, then secure with bobby pins.

The Natural Resources Salon Story
Tamika Fletcher, the co-owner of Natural Resources Salon, was a gracious host for the event and allowed the NLH members to explore the salon outside of the normal business hours. Tamika’s personal hair story began over 15 years ago. Like many of us naturals, she used countless relaxers, but thought her hair was healthy since she had a stylist maintaining her hair. After she realized the cumulative effects of relaxing her hair and the damage that it caused, she made the decision to go natural, and hasn’t looked back since. Opening Natural Resources Salon has allowed her to help other naturals who have struggled with their natural hair.
Tamika then opened the floor for a Q&A session, fielding questions from transitioning styles to maintenance, and everything in between. The underlying theme of the event was that your natural hair is different from your relaxed hair and should be treated as such. Even simple actions such as washing and braiding, can cause damage to the hair strand if not done carefully. We also discussed some of the most common transitioning styles of two strand twists, braids, and their signature brand of artificial hair for extensions, WildFlower hair. Natural Resources Salon is also the proprietor of their own hair and skin products, Earth’s Nectar, which they use exclusively throughout the salon. We were able to sample a few of these delectable goodies. My favorite had to be the moisturizer Monoi Hair Milk because of its smooth texture and intoxicating scent.
Creating a Sense of Community
We were also encouraged to share some of our own personal hair stories, which really brought the group together. This kind of support is one of the most vital reasons for joining a natural hair group. You are able to gather inspiration, encouragement and motivation from your peers. After all, who else would understand your hair story better than other naturals? The Natural Resources Salon environment fostered these types of open conversation between the members and the stylists of the salon. Tamika was even so kind as to show us several quick hairstyles that she was able to do on her own hair that took less than five minutes each! I have NEVER been in a salon where the owner was so hands-on, and it truly had a big impact on me and the other members.
Going Green
Natural Resources Salon incorporates some neat features within the walls of the salon. They allow their customers to refill products at the new recycling station. They are also a chemical-free salon, which and offer straightening treatments without harmful relaxers. From the cork floors to the product recycling station in the front of the building, to the chic lighting and artwork found throughout the facility, Natural Resources exudes a certain environmental awareness that should be apparent in all salons. Walking around the salon you could tell the amount of planning that went into making Natural Resources truly a “green” salon. I believe this is the way of the future for the hair care industry. Twists All Around
Ever have one of those days where you aren’t quite sure what to do with your hair, but didn’t want to get stuck in the ponytail rut? This twist style is super easy to achieve, and super chic at the same time. With minimal effort, you can recreate this look and be out the door in less than five minutes!
- This style works well on a blowout or an old twist out since the hair is already stretched and can be easily styled. An off center part creates an asymmetrical look with a modern twist.
- Starting with the larger section, take two pieces of hair and begin to flat twist along the hairline. The twist doesn’t have to be super tight, but you will want to keep them relatively flat. Gather hair from the crown of your head with each twist as you move around toward the back of your head. Secure with a hairpin or two.
- Continue the same style of twist on the smaller side, remembering to gather hair from the crown as you twist along the hairline. You’ll want the hair to resemble a cinnamon twist once completed.
- Once you’ve finished the smaller side you can do one of two things. You can either twist the two sides into one, roll into a bun in the back of your head, and secure with a few hairpins, or you can go for something a little snazzier. Instead of pinning in the middle of your head, position the larger twisted section to one side of your head behind your ear.
Braided Updo
Want a style that will grab the attention of everyone in the room? Considering this look can be accomplished in just a few moments, you can be effortlessly coiffed while running errands, or easily be dressed up for a night on the town with the girls.
- This style can be effortlessly transformed from an old twist out into a fashionable updo. The pompadour takes this look beyond the norm, combining retro and classy into one seamless style.
- Create the pompadour by separating the front section of hair, like bangs. Take this section and flip back, creating a poof, and secure with a couple of hair pins. You can make this as low or as high as you like.
- Start the flat braid in the back next. We’ll call it an “over hand” braid since you’ll be pulling the outside pieces over the center, creating the flat braid. Using larger sections, braid down from the pompadour. Remember, you don’t have to be perfect; it’s all in the look!
- Once you reach the end of the braid, you can “tuck” the hair under, concealing the ends within the bulk of the braid, and secure with a couple of hair pins if needed.
- To add an elegant touch, add an accessory like a stretchable double hair comb. Placing the combs in the middle of the style helps to create separation between the pompadour and the braided section. This takes the already chic look up one more notch.

Final Thoughts
Maintaining these looks is just as simple as the style themselves. Since they are low profile hairstyles, tie a satin scarf around your hair before hitting the sack. As always, a satin pillow case is good in the event you forget your scarf or if you toss and turn at night! And, if you’re in a bit of a styling crunch, both of these styles can easily last you three days or longer. Using a light moisturizing leave in spray like Oyin Handmade Juices & Berries or Darcy’s Botanicals Herbal Leave-In Conditioning Spritz will aid in keeping the styles fresh, moisturized and smelling great! Happy styling!
I had a LOT of hair growing up. Between my mom and my sister, my hair was styled pretty well, but sometime around junior high, I first discovered relaxers, perms — the creamy crack. Call it naivety, but since everyone was rocking a perm, I wasn’t concerned about any damage. I pretty much kept the “straight is the only way” mentality through high school, and the straighter it was, the better.
Fast forward past high school and into college in the year 2001. I was now exclusively caring for my hair (cue the slow, menacing music indicative of an impending catastrophe”>. Okay, well maybe not quite THAT dramatic, but I was still relaxing my hair, using heat almost daily, and experimenting with a rinse here and there.
By the time 2004 rolled around my hair was pretty blah — no life, no body, no shine. It was just there. That summer, I thought more and more about cutting my hair and just starting over. I have always admired curly hair, but having a relaxer meant no curls for me. I was completely bummed, but motivated at the same time to take my hair into my own hands.
Going for The Big Chop
July 30th, 2004 was the day I made the decision to make my hair do what I wanted. Even though I was nervous, I knew I was doing something good. I went to a local beauty school and had a male student cut my hair for $7. I got the attention of everybody in the beauty school because I was a young African American female cutting off her shoulder length, damaged hair for a close cropped, boyish hair style.
After, I went to the East End Barber Shop where my grandfather (my Paw-Paw”> was the only barber I trusted to finish the cut. He made my haircut special. After he cleaned me up, I went to see my grandmother for the official stamp of approval, and after that, it was all good!
The next weekend I headed out of town, excited to show off my new hairdo. I went from having the best time ever, enjoying my new cut, to being involved in a terrible car accident. I was spared my life, and walked away with only a knot on my head and a small cut on my hand.
It took a few months for it to finally hit me that everything happens for a reason. It was not a coincidence that I got in the accident at the point in time that I did. I think cutting my hair was a step in the right direction for me to appreciate what I had, but it wasn’t enough. The accident taught me to slow down and be thankful for the life and family I had.
Taking a Step Back
I rocked my short style for the next year and a half, and when I made my annual trek to Atlanta in January 2006, I decided I was ready for a straight style (cue the catastrophe music again”>. My hair looked good straight, but I didn’t realize I was going to pay dearly for that style.
Heat damage is serious, and it happened to me the FIRST time I straightened my hair. I was depressed and in denial for a long time, but I eventually bit the bullet and cut my hair for the second time six months later. This wasn’t as dramatic for me, but I was sad knowing that I had done that to my hair.
After enjoying my short hair again, I transitioned through most of the “awkward” phase with braids. Occasionally, I wore my hair in its curly state, but for the most part, I masked my natural.
Coming to Terms
August 2009 was when I became conscious of what my hair was really capable of. Although I had been natural now for five years, I still had NO IDEA what I was doing. I had no guidance.
It was then that I found “Curly Girl,” NaturallyCurly, CurlyNikki, Nappturality, and YouTube. I was hooked! I had no idea that I could do such things with my hair, and I was really disturbed by some of my hair practices I decided from that point on I was going to take better care of my hair, stop abusing heat, and use more products that were made with natural hair in mind. I finally felt like I was on the right path, and my hair was so thankful!
Tips for New Naturals
- Natural hair is fragile! I always assumed my natural hair was stronger because I didn’t have a chemical relaxer, but that’s quite far from accurate. Natural hair is actually prone to more tangles, knots and breakage. Handle your hair carefully by incorporating low manipulation styles like twists or braid outs, use a wide tooth comb and a conditioner with good slip when detangling, and fight the “hand in hair” urge as best as you can. I know its fun, but too much tension and/or over styling can lead to unnecessary breakage.
- Moisture, moisture, moisture! This is KEY to preventing breakage and aids in length retention. Water is the ultimate moisturizer, so don’t be afraid of it. The process of “sealing” the moisture in your hair includes using a good water based product, followed by an oil-based product, and finally a cream-based product. These steps will help prevent moisture from evaporating and ensure your hair stays shiny, smooth and moisturized.
- Do your research. You must do your due diligence when it comes to being a natural. It took me 5 years to become a “healthy” natural. There are so many outlets now where you can gather better information on styles, products and techniques for maintaining your natural hair.
- Don’t be discouraged! Going natural is much more than not having a chemical relaxer; it’s about the journey and learning about yourself and your hair. Be patient with yourself and keep reasonable expectations. Your hair may not look like Curly Nikki’s today, but that’s okay! If a style or product doesn’t work for you, there are a million others out there for you to try. The sheer versatility of natural hair is endless, so rock your own style and embrace YOUR natural no matter what!

Final Thoughts
My favorite saying when it comes to natural hair is, “If you knew better, you’d do better,” and I try to live that. I know how to manage my hair, I know what my hair likes, I also know what leads to damage and I try my best to avoid it. I now have the hair that I use to covet and it’s a wonderful feeling. I am quick to share the information I’ve learned along this fantastic voyage, but I also implore others to do a little self-exploration. It’s all in the journey and through the fun, and the disastrous, I can truly say I love This Hair of Mine.
