Wavy Manifesto: I LOVE My Stylist

It is a pretty safe assumption that most curlies have had their share of nightmares when visiting a stylist. I have been there, but now, I love my stylist and would never consider trading her in. It took a long while to get to this place because, my wavy hair and my own picky behavior have rendered finding the right stylist nearly impossible. Sure, some may think that wavy hair is easy, but the truth is, sometimes it can be unruly and rather difficult.

I love my stylist because she listens and she remembers where I part my hair. This may sound like a trivial thing, but honestly, I have been to many who have had their own ideas on where that silly part should be. Of course, during those times I quickly went home, stopping nowhere else along the way, to quickly redo what had been styled.

Not only does my stylist listen to what I want and remember my precious part, she takes the time to explain to me the products she is using, why she is using them, and where I can get them. I love my stylist because she points me in the right direction on the cost of these wavy hair products as well. She is probably more in tune with my finances than I am because she directs me to a comparable product if any of the products she is using is out of my reach.

After all these years, I finally found a stylist who “gets me” and most importantly, gets my desire to change it up often.

Something tells me that there are more curlies and wavies out there that are searching for the perfect stylist. Here are some tips to find your hair’s best friend.

She Listens

Make sure the stylist is going to listen but most importantly be honest (not everyone can have hair like they see in a magazine”>.

She Shows

You will love your stylist if she takes the time to show you how to achieve the same wonderful look yourself.

She’s Attentive

Your stylist should never seem like he/she is in a hurry making you feel as if you are not the most important person at that very moment.

She’s Considerate

Even though most stylists are charged with the responsibility of selling their salon’s products, they will not push the issue or make you feel obligated, especially if your wallet is screaming “Don’t do it!”

She Gets to Know You

Of course your stylist should be open to discuss any concerns that you might have and take the time to get to know you so that he/she might be able to make more style suggestions according to your lifestyle or personal taste.

I love my stylist because she is all the above. After all these years, I finally found a stylist who “gets me” and my desire to change it up often — you know, just to keep ‘em guessing. We can often get frustrated when trying to find a stylist, but it’s good to know that there are some real gems out there.

Do you love your stylist or are you still searching?

Curly Hair Care for Conditioning & Strengthening

There is a misconception out in the curly world of exactly what conditioning and strengthening hair really means. Many people assume that they are one and the same. The truth of the matter is that they are very different. Here are some curly hair care tips for keeping your locks both strong and conditioned.

Hair Strengthening

Creating Healthy Hair

Strong curls will break less during styling. When you strengthen hair, you are really creating healthy hair. This “style resistant” hair is created by infusing vitamins into the hair cuticles. This process nourishes the hair roots, prevents breakage and hair loss, and will improve circulation. Unfortunately, curlies should keep in mind that these products only work temporarily, so it is important to repeat your favorite hair strengthening routine once per week so that the strength can continue.

  • Products – There are many curly hair care products available in the form of creams, oils, and even some products specifically developed for all curl types. One of the best products for curly hair strengthening is a deep conditioner. Jessicurl Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment is a great option. If you don’t have the time for a deep conditioning treatment, you may opt for hair strengthening shampoos and conditioners. Try CurlJunkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner in place of your normal conditioner and watch the healthy hair appear! Want to put the strength on as a finishing touch? All you need is a spray or cream that is designed to strengthen either wet or dry curls. Spiral Solutions Leave-in Protein Spray will strengthen your locks and provide shine.
  • Diet – The food we eat plays a very important role in hair strengthening. A diet rich in calcium, phytoestrogens (found in soy products”> and vitamin C can work wonders in terms of strengthening those fabulous curly locks.

Hair Conditioning

It’s all about moisture

Many of us use lotion, drink a lot of water, and use similar methods to moisturize our skin every day. Our curls need this same type of curly hair care in the form of conditioning.

Unlike strengthening, which keeps hair from breaking, conditioning adds moisture to our curls, and should be part of our healthy hair regimen. In all honesty, a good conditioner can mean the difference between a head of beautifully flowing locks and a head-full of frizz.

  • Rinse-out Conditioners – There are many choices when it comes to conditioners you can use and rinse out after shampooing. Read the labels carefully to determine if the specific conditioner is right for your type of hair. It’s best to leave the conditioner in your hair for a few minutes before rinsing it out. This will allow it to penetrate your curls and add the moisture that you seek. If possible, up to 30 minutes is desirable.
  • Leave-in Conditioner – In addition to adding moisture to your curls with a rinse out conditioner, you can opt for a leave-in conditioner. After washing and towel drying your hair, apply a leave-in conditioner to your hair and then style as normal. Leave-in conditioners allow your hair to soak up the moisture on a continuous basis, adding a soft feel and shiny look throughout the day. Be careful not to use too much, however, because if there is one thing that we curlies hate, it’s that greasy look.

Strengthen or Condition?

  • The strength of your curly hair comes mostly from within, and depends on your diet and overall health.
  • Curly hair care involves a lot of conditioning to help your curls stay moist and frizz-free.
  • Deep condition regularly, eat right, and use leave-in conditioners daily, and you will be well on your way to hair beauty!

Wavy Hair Styles for Any Occasion

These days, nobody likes to get set in one certain style, no matter what their plans are. This is where women with wavy hair have power. They have just enough curl to wash and go, but they can easily change up their look. There are many wavy hair styles to choose from, but in order to take full advantage this versatile texture, you only need a few weapons in your arsenal to create any number of styles.

Straightened Tresses

Not always bad!

We know, this is a website about curly hair! But for type 2 women, straightening isn’t a huge no-no. Wavy hair can easily be straightened for a quick change of pace. We aren’t saying that you should straighten everyday, but if your hair gives you versatility, use it girlfriend!

For those that love to change from wavy to straight hair, a blow dryer and round brush can be your best friends. While these work to give a straight style, they are best used on hair that has a fine texture since a straightener can be a little too harsh on these types of waves.

Pumped Up Curls

More volume, the better!

Wavy hair is called wavy for a reason: it isn’t exactly curly! In fact, many wavies wouldn’t even consider their natural texture a true curl, or maybe not even a true wave. Pumping up the textured volume and putting some curl in those waves can enhance the curly look. Also, because wavy hair is textured, it can easily hold a curl pattern. By contrast, our straighter-tressed sisters would lose all shape by noon.

If you love the versatility of  wavy hairstyles, you can also use moose or gel to add fullness and bounce to your hair. For those who really want to add curl, these products work great with a curling iron or rollers. Waves seem to hold curl better, so these styles will look amazing and give you a different look.

Beach Waves

Not always bad!

Perhaps what most wavies appreciate their hair for is the wash and go versatility that being a type 2 offers. We can get up two hours early and straighten or curl our locks, or we can get up 30 minutes early, spray in some sea salt, add some mousse and rock some beach waves all day long.

To get the look, simply t-shirt dry your hair, towels will only cause more frizz, add a light frizz fighting product and some mousse or gel, whichever your prefer. Then, diffuse if you like, but letting the hair air-dry will increase wavy definition and add to the overall beachy look.

Updos for Special Events

Off the neck, but framing the face.

If you are headed out for a night on the town, or if you are attending a gala event, tese wavy hairstyles are both elegant and versatile. Try a simple updo with just a few strands of your waves cascading around your face. This is a classic and glamorous look, not to mention romantic.

Not looking to be romantic or glamorous? Simply style your hair in a ponytail with waves hanging just in front of your ears, for a casual day or evening at home.

Rock the Wavy Hair Power

  • No matter how you look at it, wavy hair styles are versatile, quick and easy.
  • There is nothing more satisfying than looking at a photo of some fabulous waves, curls, or straight ‘dos and saying, “Yeah, I can do that!”
  • Enjoy the great wavy locks that you were blessed with, and try out some different styles and cuts.
  • With wavy hair, the world is at your feet and you can have some amazing choices to make.

The Big Chop: Fast or Slow?

Curlies with perms and those who use relaxers often find that committing to the big chop is a worthwhile solution to going natural. The big chop can be done in two different ways. One being an immediate ridding of all chemically treated strands, and the other being a process of growth. Both options have their pros and cons, but either way, the big chop is all about cutting off all your hair that has been treated with chemicals and allowing your natural hair to grow out.

While there are a couple of different methods for getting a big chop, you should know that this is a real commitment. The grow out period may take some getting used to, but in the end, the natural, thick, and full head of hair that you will wind up with will turn heads and expose your natural beauty.

Cutting It All Off

Literally, THE Big Chop

Curlies who wish to go all natural immediately choose to big chop by cutting all the chemically treated hair off at once. This is done by cutting the hair within a couple inches of the scalp, leaving only the natural hair behind. Depending upon how much natural hair you have, you can either cut it or shave it. This is a very drastic change, and and you should think it out carefully before making this leap.

You can either cut your hair yourself, or have a stylist do it for you. Either way, the results will be immediate and will last a while, giving you ample opportunity to play around with short, curly hairstyles as the grow-out process begins.

Transitioning to Natural Hair

Slow & Steady

For those curlies with perms or relaxers who don’t want to make such a drastic or immediate change, there is the transition method. Growing your hair out without adding more chemicals will allow you to perform the big chop without losing as much hair all at once.

This method will allow for longer hair, but you may have hair that has a very different texture on the top than it does on the bottom. However, as with anything else we curlies decide to do, there are ways to solve this problem. Headbands, braids and ponytails can be used to mask the differing styles of our hair.

Some people who choose transitioning to natural hair will then do the big chop when their hair is long enough for comfort. Some will go for a shorter style in order to rid themselves of the chemically treated hair sooner, while others will wait until their hair is longer before deciding to cut the chemically treated strands off. All in all, it completely depends on your comfort level with shorter strands.

Are You Ready?

  • The thing to remember about the big chop is that it’s all about your personal style.
  • Give careful thought to this while weighing the pros of saving money at the salon, time in front of the mirror, and an overall sense of freedom with the cons of having shorter hair for a time or having to cover up a two-tiered style.
  • Have you already transitioned or done the big chop? Tell us about your experience, and why you chose the method you did!

FHI Heat GO Curling Rod: Curls On The Go
Bun

Some of the most frequently sought-after hairstyles by women with straight, wavy, or even curly hair are, well, curly hairstyles! Just because your hair might be naturally curly doesn’t mean that you don’t want a different style occasionally. It also doesn’t mean that you will never have issues with fly-aways, or maybe a little frizz that might need to be tamed. In addition, there are always occasions when everyday hairstyles just won’t do, like weddings, anniversaries or holidays.

In fact, curlies love to experiment and find various ‘dos to style-up their beautiful locks. This is why even the curliest of curlies may invest in a curling iron to help tame or boost their natural curly hair.

How to Do a Quiff for Curly Hair
Bun

Heading out on the town or preparing for a special event doesn’t have to present drama or a dilemma for those with wavy, curly, or kinky hair. In fact, some of the most popular glamorous hairstyles come in the form of a classic quiff. Many curlies don’t even realize that this look can work for them, as well.

A quiff is a style that is easy to obtain for curly hair of any length or texture. Better known as “rock-chic,” a quiff is easy to obtain and the instruments needed are few. Perhaps the greatest thing about a quiff is that is a rather versatile style that can be worn on the top of your head or on the side. So, if you have wavy, curly or kinky hair, try out a quiff hairstyle for your next special night out.

What ever your style, what ever your hair type, the quiff will get you the look you want.

Get the Elegant Quiff Look

What You’ll Need

  1. Backcomb your curls. In order to maintain this style and enjoy a hair care free evening, you will want to apply more than a generous  amount of your favorite hairspray. Use clips or bobby pins to hold hair back on the sides, pinning where you see the hair needs to be held down. Your eyes and personal style will define the look, so be sure you pin down where you see fit.
  2. Create a higher style. To obtain a higher bouffant style, you can use hot rollers. Doing so will keep your curls from suddenly or gradually falling in your face throughout the night. Roll your hair backwards on to the hot rollers, and then leave them in for 15 minutes. Afterward, you can roll tresses to the back or to the side depending upon which look you are going for.
  3. Finish it up. Utilize some bobby pins to keep the quiff in the area of the head you want it to stay. Most women who sport this style want it to have a shine, which adds to the “get noticed” appeal of a quiff. To do this, simply add more hairspray. Be careful not to add too much, or your ‘do will look over-done or fake. After all, the point is to get some attention with a glamorous look, not to be a conversation piece.

If you have never done a quiff before, or if you are somewhat nervous about it, take a couple practice runs at it before hitting the club scene or the main event of the year. We all know that practice makes perfect, and a quiff is no different.

Curly Hair Products for Any Climate

Does it ever seem like your curly hair care products are working fabulously in your hometown, but then, when you travel, they mysteriously stop working in their usual miraculous way? The answer lies simply in the word “humidity.”

Some say that it’s the heat, and not the humidity. The truth is, when it comes to our curly locks, humidity has much more to do with whether our curls are tight and bouncy, or just kind of hanging out. Here are a few curly hair products and tips to keep your hair looking great no matter where you go.

Anti-Humectants

Water, water, go away!

Location recommendation: Humid, low lying areas

Anti-humectants can be found in many skin care and curly hair products. Anti-humectants work well in humid areas because they pull out the moisture from the air that your hair is taking in. Try products like, AG Hair Cosmetics Curl Trigger Curl Defining Spray. Avoid anti-humectants in dry areas, however, or during dry seasons of the year.

Anti-humectants can be either your best friend or your worst enemy depending on you need. Ignorance may be bliss, but in this case, not knowing about humectants can leave you either frizzy or flat.

Conditioners

Thick and rich or thick and rich?

Location recommendation: All areas

The time of year, your location, the temperature, and the humidity level all determine how often, which type, and how much conditioner you should use. If you’re in an area that’s dry and cold, or traveling during the winter, you will need a thicker and richer conditioner than you would use in sunny California or humid parts of the country.

Florida is especially known for hair changes due to the humidity. In fact, just going from the inland cities to the beach can change the look and feel of your curls before your eyes.

Keep in mind that over-conditioning can give your curls a greasy feel, but not conditioning enough can make your hair retain a lot of static causing poof and frizz.

Leave-in Conditioners

For some an option  for others a necessity!

Location recommendation: Dry areas, or during winter months

If you live in a humid area, you probably do not use a leave-in conditioner, which is completely fine for curlies in those areas. However, if you travel or live in a dry area, a leave-in is necessary, preferably one without humectants.

The key to keeping your curls looking great all the time, no matter where you travel, is to learn about the curly hair products that you are using. Some are going to work well in one area and not in another, due to the humidity levels and whether or not they contain humectants.

Quick Tips

  • Always pay attention to the ingredients list! Anti-humectants and humectants do two very different things.
  • Be sure to always condition, but definitely deep condition often in colder climates.
  • Leave-ins are great for daily use, just be sure to find one that isn’t too heavy for your curls.

How to Hide Oily Roots
Bun

Let’s face it, we have all been there: trying to get through a busy day, filled with chaos, then, to top it off, your roots are getting visibly oily. Many curlies can relate to this, and the thought of what people are thinking, if and when they notice, can make us cringe or have us reaching for the nearest hat!

The good news is that no matter how soon you need to get out out of the house in the morning, there are ways that you can hide those oily roots and get on with a productive day or a fun filled evening, worry free! So, don’t panic, simply try these simple hair care tips and methods until you find the one that suits you perfectly.

Obviously, no curly is the same, but if you truly want to hide your oily roots, try this quick method. It can result in beautiful, full waves of curls without the oil or the embarrassment.

Hiding the Oil in a Hurry

Everything you need to hide oily roots, you probably already have in your makeup bag!

What You’ll Need

  • Baby Power or Matte Bronze
  • Makeup Brush
  • Flat Iron
  1. Choose your weapon. The color of your hair is going to determine which product you use. If you are a blonde or lighter shaded curly, then get yourself some baby powder. Brunettes and darker shades, grab some matte bronze to keep on hand at home, or to carry with you in your bag. You never know when you might find yourself in desperate need of some quick camouflage.
  2. Use your makeup bag tools. Use a big, fluffy makeup brush — yes, your makeup brush — to apply the powder to the roots. Not only does this process absorb the oil in your hair, but it also leaves it looking and feeling fresh. Be sure to only apply to the roots of the hair and avoid using too much. You also might want to keep the brush in your bag for touch ups later in the day.
  3. Shake it up! Once you have applied the power or matte, you will want to shake out your hair to get rid of any excess. Then, fluff up your curls with your fingers, or style as you normally would. If you find that you still have a few strands of hair that are oily, a quick touch of the flat iron will take care of that pesky little problem. Be sure you use the lowest heat setting when using heat styling products. You want to avoid damaging your locks, at all costs!
  4. Practice makes perfect. While this technique is a favorite of many oily rooted curlies, practice is of some importance. By testing the method a few times, you will be able to figure out how much powder or matte your hair needs. Using too much can have you leaving trails of powder wherever you go, much like dandruff, while using too little will make you feel like you are wasting your time.

Curly Careers for a Tough Market
Curly haired woman journalling

Just because the news in today’s world seems to be filled with stories of unemployment due to layoffs, firings, and companies simply closing their doors, doesn’t mean that we curlies have to sit back and accept the status quo.

In today’s technological market, there are things that you can do, not only to enhance your income, but to enhance your lifestyle as well. Even if you are not technologically savvy, you can find freelance opportunities everywhere. It all depends upon what you love to do, or how you can parlay your current skills into a new endeavor.

Creative Career Crossovers

We know you are a curly-headed go-getter, so don’t let that unemployment check, or lack thereof, get you down. You have skills and you have talent. Now is the time to see where you can take the world, instead of where the world will take you.

  1. It’s all about words! So many people say, “I should write a book one day,” and hats off to those who actually do. Other people simply say that they wish they could sit at the beach and write for a living. Of course, this takes some training, not to mention focus, which is why many people think of writers and editors as possessing a degree. While it is true that a degreed writer or editor can make a fantastic living in the freelance world, a curly with not-so-much training can also succeed in this area. There are a number of companies that hire writers to write content for their websites. Your job is simply to write or edit to their specifications. While this does take some time and patience, when we curlies put our mind to something, it gets done, and it gets done well. Performing a simple search on the Internet and applying to several companies can land you the perfect gig to supplement any other income you might have coming in. In addition, the harder you work and the more focused you are, the more this will lead to a rewarding career that you will never want to give up. If you haven’t caught on yet, I’m saying that your dream life at the beach, writing for a living, is absolutely in your reach! A little research and dedication will get your toes in the sand sooner than you think.

  1. Teachers can live it up! The economy has been stripping our wallets dry and tearing at our heartstrings. The most recent escapade that has us worried for not only our home life, but also our family’s school life, is the laying off of teachers and the large class sizes that come along with that. However, teachers are just as savvy as we always thought they were! Many are taking their love of teaching and children to the domestic world, offering their nanny services along with personal, one-on-one teaching. If you have teaching skills, then, with the right attitude, you can parlay those skills in to a paycheck, and even a nice resume booster! Taking on one of these positions will allow you to teach and make great money. In fact, in some states, you may make more money than you would in a classroom full of children! Take that, state budget cuts!
  2. Become a mystery shopper. Most of us curlies have heard about companies that hire people to go into businesses and “observe” the customer service. But, like me, many of you have probably ignored those emails and marked them as spam. Heck, cleaning a possible virus off your computer costs money that you don’t have. However, the position is absolutely real, and the best news is that you do not have to pay anything to do it. The good people over at Volition will give you a free list of companies to which you can apply and begin making some extra cash right away.  As a mystery shopper, you will enter businesses and enjoy a shopping experience. The Tightly Curly Method
Bun

Been looking for a hairstyle routine that has the potential to keep your curls tight and bouncy up to four to five days? Look no further! Curlies everywhere have been utilizing what is called the tightly curly method, invented by Teri LaFlesh, author of “Curly Like Me,” in order to achieve just that.

The method is based mainly on using any type of conditioner as a leave-in conditioner. While it may seem a little odd to leave a rinse-out conditioner in your hair, the method has many curly-haired women raving about the results.

So join the bandwagon, find out how to use the tightly curly method properly and become one of the raving fans.

Shampooing

Since curly hair is so different than straight hair, extreme care must be taken when cleansing. This means that you should be washing your hair gently, focusing more on the scalp area.

Most curlies only need to shampoo once—aka, no rinse and repeat—and when finished, rinse the shampoo out. Once this is completed, you can use a light low-cost conditioner. Apply a generous amount to your scalp and squeeze it down to your ends. A lightweight conditioner will make the hair slippery, allowing for dirt to cling to it. This way, when you rinse it out, you will rinse out more dirt, leaving you with cleaner hair without over shampooing.

Some curlies, however, may not even need to shampoo. The no shampoo method works well with the tightly curly method as well. Keep in mind, however, that if you have recently worked out, you should wash your hair in order to rid it of sweat and dirt, despite you individual hair type.

Applying the Conditioner

You need to use a lot of conditioner in order to make the tightly curly method work. Pour out a big handful and apply it to half of your hair, concentrating on areas other than the scalp. In order to allow the scalp to breathe, apply conditioner about two inches away from the roots.

As you are applying, you should be able to feel the conditioner gushing around your fingers. If this is not happening, you need more conditioner. Once you are done with one half, do the same for the other half.

Settling and Definition

Use a large toothed brush that has a lot of give, as curly locks often can be damaged by finer toothed combs.

While brushing, you will notice that the conditioner is producing a lot of foam, but by the time you are done, this foam will disappear as the conditioner settles on the hair. Keep in mind that your hair needs to be soaking wet while you are brushing.

Wrap strands of hair around your fingers in order to define curls.

Let it Dry

Avoid blow drying as this can cause damage and frizz. Instead, let the hair dry naturally. If you’re feeling impatient, you can speed up the drying process with a little help. Once it is dry, don’t brush or comb it. Rather, separate it gently with your fingers.

Maintenance

If you want to refresh the look between shampoos, simply wet the hair and apply more conditioner. In order to help maintain the look, sleep in braids. This will help to hold the curl pattern and style in place. Also, if you haven’t yet invested in a satin pillowcase, you definitely should! Cotton pillowcases pull at your hair and can cause frizz, split ends, uneven curling, and more. You don’t want to spend all of this time on the tightly curly method just to have everything unravel while you sleep.

Loose Curls on a Tight Budget
Bun

As curlies, we all know that getting those perfect loose curls doesn’t just take time, it can also cost a lot of money. It’s easy to get carried away with all the fabulous products and new-fangled technological products available to make our hair look its best.

However, budget-conscious curlies know that you don’t need to get all caught up in the latest fads in terms of the over-priced products. These ladies lead luxurious lives, not in debt because of their natural ‘do.

We’ve hunted down these tricks of the moderately priced trade to help you get out of hair debt.

Sleep On It

The first step to inexpensive beautiful curls is to put the product down and try all-natural methods. If you really want to get perfect loose curls on a budget—try sleeping on buns. Wash your hair either in the late afternoon or evening. Towel dry only to the point where your hair is not dripping wet.

Apply your favorite curl product, such as Jane Carter Solution Wrap and Roll, which is relatively inexpensive, but works as much as the salon priced products.

Next, simply divide your hair into three, equal sections. Wrap each section in to a bun. Be sure to secure these buns tightly with either clips or bobby pins. Then simply go to sleep. When you wake up, check to see if the buns are completely dry. If they are still wet or damp, use a hair dryer to complete the process. Unwrap the buns and gently run your fingers through your hair. At this point you can use your curling iron to finish off the loose curl style.

Curling Iron Creations

For curlies that love the loose curls they get from curling irons, there are some products that you want to have on hand. Volumizing spray, thermal protection, mousse, shine serum, and hair spray are must-haves. For those of us on a budget, there are many wonderful products available at inexpensive prices.

After washing, apply the thermal protection spray and blow-dry as you normally would. Next, separate in to one-inch sections. Apply mouse to each section and then apply volumizing spray. This will add definition and provide a better end result.

When you begin to curl your hair with the curling iron, place it close to the roots and rotate it to a 180 degree angle. Only hold it for 5 to 10 seconds, otherwise you will get a much tighter curl.

After releasing the curling iron, wrap the curl around your finger and apply the shine serum and hair spray. If you want the curls to blend in, simply ruffle them up a bit with your fingers.

Got Shorter Hair?

When it comes to shorter hair, getting loose curls is fairly simple. It goes without saying that achieving this timeless, romantic look takes fewer products and less time. This is where your curling iron is your friend. You can do the same curling iron style above for loose curls that grab attention.

All wavies can greatly benefit from purchasing an inexpensive curling iron. Once you buy this product, you’ll be amazed to find that you can create a variety of looks without much product to hold. Less product means less build-up and curlier, more voluminous tresses.

Curly Hair Styles for Oval Faces

If you have an oval shaped face, you might not be aware that this shape is considered perfect for just about all hair styles. There are so many curly hair styles for oval faces—no matter what your hair type—so the sky’s the limit.

The oval shaped face is considered perfect because there is nothing about the face that needs to be enhanced, nor are there feature that should be minimized of detracted from. The biggest rule to finding curly hair styles for oval faces is to not cover it up. Why mess with perfection?

Bangs

Allow those amazing features to shine with a long, layered cut. Type 2 wavies can enjoy side-swept bangs, but curly gals with type 3 and type 4 hair may want to shy away from bangs altogether. Curly and kinky bangs have a tendency to shrink and may need to often be heat-styled to maintain the look. Heat styling is unhealthy for your locks and it is best to stay away from daily use.

Keep in mind that, while bangs may be an option, for wavies, curlies and kinkies, an oval face is something to show off. No need to cover your forehead—your oval shaped face should shine.

Parting

For medium to longer hair, all curlies will want to keep their locks from falling in their face. Each curly hair type should consider parting their hair on the side instead of down the middle. This will keep the oval-shape from looking too long. Try sticking your hair behind your ears and using either pins or a decorative barrette to hold it in place.

Layered

No matter long or short, all curly hair styles should be layered but still kept off the face. The oval shape can handle a shorter cut as long as there are no bangs involved for those with tighter or kinky curls.

Curlies can run into trouble if they cut their hair too short without layering. Cuts that are too far above the ears can make you look like a puffball, so soften up the cut by allowing for a slightly longer cut and some layers.

Reach for the Stars

Beyonce Knowles and Julia Roberts are both blessed with oval shaped faces, and both have long, curly hair. Their styles can be emulated by curlies everywhere. Get brave, enjoy your perfect face, and see what you like best.

Curly Hair Styles for Heart Shaped Faces

Women with heart shaped faces are experimenting with curly hair styles that they may never have considered before, and the results are fabulous.

A heart shaped face is defined as having a narrow and pointed chin. If you’re a curly with a heart shaped face, you will also have very defined cheekbones, you can find a style that not only flatters your cheekbones, but will also make your eyes pop.

Of course, the main aim of any woman with a heart shaped face is to add width at the bottom in order to obtain balance.

If you’re looking for something a little different, though, these curly hair styles can help make your decision clearer as far as determining what look you want to try next. After all, having curly hair doesn’t mean that you’re trapped with just one style.

Long Curly Hair Styles

Curlies can add width to the lower part of the face by keeping the length of their locks no more than 4 to 5 inches below the chin. Soft and loose curly locks work best in layers to frame the face while taking the weight out of the curls.

For type 4 hair, any kind of twist will look amazing as long as your locks are not pulled back too far away, allowing the hair to frame the face while staying out of the way. Try pulling your hair back while leaving just a touch hanging on the sides. This look can double as a morecasual or elegant style depending upon what you are wearing.

Remember not to let hair hang too far below the chin area, no matter what type of curls you have, since this will elongate the face.

Short Curly Hair Styles

Layers abound for those of us with short, curly hair. However, with a heart shaped face, it’s important not to have short layers near the top of the head. This will result in a “top-heavy” look offsetting the goal to make the chin area look wider for a more balanced flair.

When you visit your stylist for a cut, alert him or her to your face shape. One of the best short curly hair styles for heart-shaped faces is the pixie cut. If a pixie-cut is too short for you, try a short style that will minimize frizz, while letting it grow out on the sides. For women with looser curls, a bob cut just beneath the ears will be perfect. For those with tighter curls, a bob cut just above the ears will expand the kinks out, diluting a “top-heavy” look.

Medium Curly Hair Styles

Since the entire point of styling hair for the heart-shaped face is to frame it by adding width to the chin, medium-length curly hair styles are best.

For wavy, type 2 hair, bangs that are side swept and not blunt across the forehead work best for a heart-shaped face. Blunt bangs can shorten the look of your face.

Keep in mind that bangs work best on those with loose curls; types 3 and 4 may have problems with maintaining bangs. However, if you can achieve the look without having to result to straightening the strands, bangs can even out a heart-shaped face for all hair textures.

Layered curly hair styles work well for all hair types, but should always be tapered around the face to highlight your best features.

Softening your cheekbones while at the same time adding style is, for most curlies, the entire point of the medium-length hair style. Many medium hairstyles for curly hair are easy to maintain and can offer an array of simple, elegant or sexy styles.

The Sky’s the Limit

As you can see, there many of ways that curlies can style their hair around their heart-shaped face to magnify the eyes, soften or dramatize their cheekbones, and play up or soften their beautiful features.

Remember to keep the frizz and fly-aways at bay with your favorite products to get the most out of these sensational curly hair styles. We like products such as Blended Beauty Curly Frizz Pudding.

Brahmi Oil For Healthy Hair
Bun

In today’s beauty world we are hearing about new, all-natural products every day. Some work very well and deliver on their promises while others, well, let’s just say they leave much to be desired.

Brahmi oil, however, is one of those helpful little items that help curlies in ways that they may never have understood before. In fact, most of us do not even realize that this oil is found in many of the natural hair products we already use.

Health Benefits and Origin

Brahmi oil (better known as Gotu Kola”>, is a regenerative herb that has been used for thousands of years as a medicine. This Gotu Kola is a common ground cover, which is found in the tropics of India.

Brahmi oil has a sweet fragrance and is green in color. The proponents of Brahmi say that the herb promotes intellect and enhances mental performance. Brahmi fans also state that proper function of the nervous system is greatly enhanced by the herb.

Guto Kola has also been used to help people with amnesia, memory loss, general weakness, senility, neurasthenia, and coughing. Those suffering from epilepsy, venereal disease, and insomnia have also reported tremendous Guto Kola benefits.

Of course, the question comes down to, “What can this do for my curly hair?”

When used properly, curlies will not want to go another day without it. While Brahmi is normally an ingested tonic, you can seek amazing benefits for your curly hair by using the herb in its oil form.

Dandruff

Let’s face it, from time to time even the most vigilant of us can end up with bouts of dandruff and a dry itchy scalp. When applied to roots every night, Brahmi oil will replenish hair roots with the necessary moisture and cure your dandruff problems. In addition, Brahmi oil will make the hair follicle stronger with continued use.

Hair Loss

Many curlies apply Brahmi oil regularly to their scalp in order to nourish their hair roots, promoting growth. When using the oil, you will be keeping your head cool and allowing hair to grow quicker.

Split End Prevention

Once you have been using Brahmi oil on your hair you will begin to see that your split ends are fewer and farther between. Consistent use of Brahmi oil coats the hair follicle providing an extra layer of protection and thus preventing both discoloration and split ends while promoting luster.

Sources of Brahmi

Many natural oils already contain Brahmi, so if you want to try it, then all you need to do is read the labels.

It is also in many massage oils, conditioners and shampoos. Brahmi oil has a fruity, fresh herbal aroma and can be blended with sandalwood to offer an even more relaxing experience while handling that dandruff and those pesky split ends.

Final thoughts

Remember, the best way to apply Brahmi oil is to massage it into your roots. Daily head massage also promotes blood circulation to the area and encourages faster hair growth.

Can Curly Updos Create Hair Loss?
Bun

No matter what curly type you are, chances are you have played around with some sort of an updo. We all love to play with our hairstyles and look our very best whether we are hanging out around the house, going to some special event, or even spending the day at the beach. These can all be times when you may choose to opt for a sleek, complicated, or simple curly updo.

The question is what do these updo styles do to our roots and scalp? There is some evidence to the myth of permanent hair loss from the stress of updos. According to HairBoutique.com, wearing tight curly updos, braids, or ponytails over an extended period of time can cause hair loss. The good news is that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of loose curly updos from which curlies can choose to avoid root stress. But, if giving up your tight tresses isn’t in your immediate future, follow the routines below.

Curly Updo Care

The reality of the situation is that when wearing a curly updo we are placing the weight of our hair directly on our scalp. There are also situations where the updo is styled too tightly and the pins we are using jab into our skin. This “stress pain” can be felt while wearing the updo, but most often this pain occurs after the do is taken down. Curlies may notice that their roots and scalp hurt when they brush, comb, or even simply run their fingers through their hair.

Scalp Soothing Products

There are several products to help a healing scalp specifically made for curlies. Hot oil treatments are one way to help ease the pain and stop the screams that your roots seem to be emulating. Aubrey Organics 100% Organic Jojoba Oil is an all-natural oil that not only makes curly hair feel soft but also soothes the scalp when used properly. It can also be used as a hot oil treatment.

In addition, Blended Beauty Herbal Reconditioner is another conditioner that can sooth your ailing scalp and roots just after removing the tight updos.

Final thoughts

While the initial shock of root and scalp stress can be alarming, rest assured that there is no need to worry. Taking the proper measures to allow your scalp and roots to heal is wise so that you don’t end up swearing off the curly updo styles that you love to sport.

The bottom line is that using the right products and giving your scalp and roots some “babying” time is just what the doctor ordered. If you are experiencing pain from scalp stress or root stress, take some time to pamper your curly head with the right products and maybe even a scalp massage to really get the blood flowing.

Bun

Going away for the weekend may seem daunting, but it doesn’t mean that curlies have to pack a lot of products to keep their hair looking stylish and incredible. In fact, just the word “weekend” should signal light packing and a quick getaway. You may be asking yourself, “How is that possible when there are so many products that need to be taken?” Well, never fear, good news abounds. “Air travel” bottles and containers can be purchased to replace some of your favorite and must have products making your bag weekend travel a breeze.

For curly hair, you will want to make the most of your products. Curly hair can be fickle, so it is essential that us curlies are prepared for anything that may arise. 1. Shampoo It goes without saying that everyone should be taking their own shampoo anytime they travel, but for us curlies, this can also mean conditioner and an untangling product. You can combine three products into one, saving time, money, and space, by purchasing a shampoo that offers untangling and conditioning. Curl Junkie Daily Fix Cleansing Conditioner is a great co-washing product to take along on your weekend trip to keep curls looking their best.
  2. Frizz Control No matter what curly hair type you have, make sure that your weekend travel bag includes a frizz control product. Traveling can do a number on curly hair if it is left to its own desires. There are numerous products to pick out, such as Blended Beauty Curly Frizz Pudding, but if you already have a favorite, you may find it in the perfect travel size for your bag or just use one of the small airline bottles.
  3. Hair Dryer Hotel blow dryers can be unreliable at best and when they do work, chances are, they are not going to work well, or worse yet, shut off in the middle of styling. We’ve all been there, so it is important to take your own blow dryer and diffuser to keep curls looking their best without frizzing and without spending hours upon hours in the hotel bathroom messing with a broken dryer. Better yet, take to the wind and let your hair air dry for a weekend. In doing this, you will eliminate the need to bring along a blow dryer and diffuser – and give your curls a heat styling vacation.
  4. Hair Pins Hairpins are great and will come in handy when it’s time to relax and put perfect tresses behind you. Pinning it up or pulling it back can offer the freedom to move about your weekend freely with much less “hair stress.” These items will also come in handy if you plan on going out for a night on the town and need to style an awesome up-do. Remember, though, to not pull hair too tightly as this can cause root and scalp stress.
  5. Straightener/ Curling Iron While curly hair may not need a curling iron there may be occasion to style hair in a different manner in which you normally wear it while you are traveling. In addition, both a hair straighener and a curling iron can help a great deal while traveling to reduce frizz and provide a style that is easily maintained during various activities. If you use a straighener often, and like the look, you can opt for a straighener that both straightens and dries at the same time, thus eliminating the need for a bulky blow dryer and diffuser. Also, be sure to pack plenty of bobby pins, hair ties and headbands. These can go a long way to dressing up your hair without requiring any heat styling.

Final thoughts

While these products may seem like “no-brainers,” weekend travel often puts us in such a hurry that we forget to grab even the essentials. These items will ensure that curlies like us will enjoy spur of the moment weekend travel and know that our hair is looking great!
