If you are a 2C, the NaturallyCurly Texture Typing system may confuse you a little bit. 2C’s generally have a mixture of different wavy and curly patterns on their head, and the look can vary greatly among ladies.
It’s impossible to pinpoint one exact model to show you, as there are many variations on a single curl pattern (hair can be fine, coarse, dense, or thin), so we’ve compiled 20 photos of lovely 2C (and mixed curl pattern) ladies to help you narrow down your type.
2C hair consists of S-shaped waves mixed with ringlets. These waves and curls begin at the roots, unlike their 2B wave sisters, which start around eye level. The biggest goal of wavies is to find products that fight frizz while giving the hair enough hold to keep the waves defined without making them crispy or weighing them down.

Hello, 3A curly lady! If you suspect you have type 3A curls but haven’t yet found a doppelganger, that’s because most people have several curl types on their heads. 3A curls typically have the circumference of sidewalk chalk, but as you’ll see from the examples below, there is plenty of variation in the density and width of these curls. Some of these heads of hair may look much fuller or finer than your hair. If their hair is shorter or longer, that can also affect how the curls form.
Whether you’re wondering if you’re truly a 3A or want some inspo, we’ve compiled a range of photos of women rocking their 3A curls. Do not be distressed if you don’t find a perfect match; this article shows that there are many ways a 3A can curl.

Type 4C coily lady, you are a total babe! You most likely have a completely separate budget for products, as your goal is all about moisture (and tons of it”>. You can also shock people when you show them how long your hair is when stretched and essentially have 2 completely different styles without buying expensive extensions. Products with lots of slip are important to you, as they lubricate and detangle your hair, while adding extra moisture. Your coils are similar to a 4B in shape, but are much denser and more prone to shrinkage.
Oftentimes 4C coils are fragile, as they can dry out, which causes them to break easily. Solve this by moisturizing (x1000″>, avoiding any styles that can break hair easily, and staying away from harsh chemicals. Since 4C is typically the same coil shape as a 4B, most women have combinations of 4C and 4B coils on their heads. Some even have types from the whole 4 category.
Remember, most women have several curl patterns on their head, so you will see many women with a range of curls and coils here.

Because 4B and 4C curl types are so similar in shape (the only thing that changes between the two is density and coarseness”>, most women who have one curl on their head will have the other. It is very common to also have 4A curls mixed in as well.
Curl pattern is certainly not the end-all-be-all when it comes to your texture type, as your porosity, density and width will all play major roles in the way your hair looks, feels, and reacts to your regimen. It can be a good jumping off point for finding women who have similar hair textures to yours and learning about what they do, but we encourage you to get to know your porosity as well so you can find the products and moisturizing routine that will work for your unique hair.

If you’d never buy a “one-size-fits-all” blouse, why would you base all of your haircare ideas on one category? We created the NaturallyCurly Texture Typing System not to give you a perfect answer to your curl type questions, but to give you a tool to help you figure out how to maintain your beautiful crown. This system breaks hair down into 3 categories, and then 3 subgroups within those categories. However, when you use this chart it is important to remember that most people have more than one curl type on their head – sometimes up to 4 different types! Your hair is an incredible thing that can completely change with different products, weather or days of the week and you should never feel like you need to check just one box.

4a hair consists of tightly coiled curls that have the circumference of a crochet needle. Slightly prone to breakage, Type 4 hair can be fragile, highly porous, and can be very fine and wiry. No need to fret though, as type 4a coilies tend to hold more moisture in their strands than their 4b and 4c counterparts. Most 4a coilies also share multiple textures with their 3c and 4b sisters!

We know there is nothing “one-size-fits-all” about textured hair, which is why we created the NaturallyCurly Texture Typing System. With so much variety between textures, one woman’s holy grail may be another woman’s product fail. The Texture Typing System not only breaks down categories into wavy, curly and coily, but subgroups hair further into 3 specific groups within those categories. When using this guide, we hope that you do not feel the need to put yourself into only one category, and we especially hope you do not feel discouraged if you don’t see your exact texture and pattern represented.
Fun fact: most people are truly a mixture of several curl patterns!
Curl pattern is only one piece of the puzzle when hair type is concerned. Other important factors are porosity, length, width, and density. That is why one woman with fine 3c curls can look drastically different from a woman with coarse 3c curls. We want to show you just how diverse each curl pattern can be, so here are 20 women who are rocking their 3C hair!
As you’ll quickly see, 3c curls can take many forms.
1. @devrivelazquez
NaturallyCurly Editor Devri’s thick hair has a high porosity and density. She says she has so much of it that she can never see her scalp. In this article Devri explained why, although she and our Video Production Manager Nikki both have 3c hair, they’re not hair twins.
2. @nchanel
NaturallyCurly Video Production Manager Nikki has fine, low density hair, so they represent two different types of 3cs in the NaturallyCurly office. It’s always interesting listening to them battle it out over the products they’re loving and hearing what works and won’t work for both.
3. @heycurlie
@heycurlie describes her hair as coarse and dry with high porosity. For this particular look, she used Soultanicals Slip-N-Slide Knot-Proof Hair Glide and Soultanicals Can’t Believe It’s Knot Butta.

Ultimately it can be helpful to find women who have similar hair to yours to see what styles work well on their hair and what products they love, but one thing that’s uniformly true for every curly hair journey is that it will take trial and error to discover what works for your unique curls.
We hope this variety of 3cs helped you understand the range of curl patterns, and we plan to continue doing these for all of the curl patterns so stay tuned!

Did you just land yourself a hot date for this weekend? Don’t worry if your cutest dress isn’t in the seasonal color palette you’ve been hearing so much about, or that you’ve worn it before on your Instagram. If you’ve been blessed with Type 2 waves, rejoice! Your gorgeous strands are your best date-night accessory.
On your past dates, you may have been in a hair rut based on those tried-and-true convenient styles. Break out of that with a few new romantic hairstyles that accentuate the hair your mama gave you. If you’re reading this and thinking, “Do I have Type 2 hair?” we’ve made a guide for you to self-type your curls or waves.
Whether you’re on a first date or you’re going to dinner with your husband of 25 years, these hairstyles can help you turn up the romance on your next night on the town.
1. The Classic Updo
What you’ll need:
- 2 clear hair elastics
- bobby pins
This classic updo is great for dates where you want to add a touch of elegance. Your hair stays gracefully out of your face so the focus is on you and only you. While you can sweep all of your hair up into this updo, you can also leave loose strands out of the bun for a more relaxed look. You can choose between starting with straight hair for a smooth, glossy appearance or leaving your waves natural for added volume. Of course we love the way natural waves look, but it’s up to you! With your type 2 hair, adjusting your texture will not be an issue.
2. Twist-Back
What you’ll need:
- large clip
- 1 clear hair elastic
This simple hairstyle is a more creative take on the classic half up/half down style we all know and love. This is a great style because it allows you to show off your strands while still controlling them so you don’t have to move your hair out of your eyes every 3 minutes at dinner. This style can be done with or without bangs or extensions. Check out Mimi’s tutorial for Luxy Hair.
3. Knotted Half Up/Half Down
What you’ll need:
- comb
- 1 clear hair elastic
- bobby pins
- texture spray
To keep your date wondering, “how did she do that?” add this to your rotation. This is similar to the previous style, but uses a different technique for added volume and includes a knot at the end. It is great to start with some texture, so 2-3 day hair is perfectly acceptable for this style. After styling, apply a texture spray like SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Texture Spray or Jenny with Confessions of a Hairstylist‘s choice, Kenra Professional Platinum Dry Texture Spray, to spruce up your waves even more.
4. Twisted Low Bun
What you’ll need:
- 2 hair ties
- bobby pins
- shine mist
If you’ve ever struggled with trying to do an elegant bun with thick hair, struggle no more! This style takes weight off the bun while using the front pieces for visual volume. Spray the hair with a shine mist at the end to ensure everyone can see your gorgeous waves or curls (a couple of our favorites are The Doux Emcee Light Weightless Shine Mist and Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Oil Shine & Hold Mist“>. Get your bobby pins out and get to work on this gorgeous updo by Confessions of a Hairstylist.
5. Rapunzel Braid
What you’ll need:
- 1 duck bill clip
- a handful of clear hair elastics
- frizz-fighting serum
Want to feel like a princess? Try this look by creating a loose braid piled high for extra volume. Leave out some pieces of hair around your face and pin curl with bobby pins or use a wand for a face-framing touch. Extensions are optional for this style, but whether you use them or not, apply a frizz-fighting serum like Carol’s Daughter Sacred Tiare Smoothing Serum or Ouidad Texture Smoothing Frizz & Flyaway Fighter Spray beforehand. You can add flowers or clips to this braid as an added touch!
6. Side Swept Bun
What you’ll need:
- 3 duck bill clips
- bobby pins
The side swept look is perfect for drawing attention to both the beauty of your hair and your other attributes in equal measure. This style begins with forming a simple bun above the nape of your neck. Then, use the pieces around that bun to make a sweeping motion to your “good side.” You can make this style dramatically different by sticking with your natural hair, straightening it, or curling it. Versatility is a curly girl’s best asset.
7. Fishtail Flower Half Up/Half Down
What you’ll need:
- 1 clear hair elastic
- bobby pins
- hairspray
Here’s another take on the half up/half down look, but with an added bonus. How lovely is this fishtail flower? Don’t worry, this gorgeous style is MUCH simpler than it appears. Finish this look off with your favorite hairspray. Some of our favs include DevaCurl Flexible-Hold Hair Spray, Ouidad Curl Last Flexible-Hold Hairspray and Elucence All Day Hold Spritz.
Side note: commenters have said that the flower shows up much better on lighter hair, but it still adds a lovely touch to darker hair as well!
8. Crisscross Full Bun
What you’ll need:
- 5-6 clear hair elastics
- bobby pins
Here’s a unique style you won’t see on anyone else. I like to call this a faux braid because it gives the illusion of thick and beautiful braided hair, but is actually much easier to accomplish. This style works on all different lengths of hair and is perfect for many different occasions. You won’t be able to walk through public without constant compliments with this one. Check out this tutorial by MakeupWearables Hairstyles to learn how!
9. Lace Braided Bun
What you’ll need:
- Bobby pins
- Clear hair elastic
For a fancier night out, opt for this lace braided bun. This looks fabulous from all angles and draws attention to your hair, while keeping your hair up and out of your face for everything from dancing to drinking. Your Type 2 texture will add the perfect amount of volume to this great look.
10. High Pony Half Up/Half Down
What you’ll need:
- comb
- 1 hair tie
- bobby pins
This sleek style is great for a variety of occasions. It is the quickest style on the list and can be done in less than a minute. Lavish Krish has long, thick hair in her tutorial, but this will look great on any length that can stay in a ponytail! Take your work style to date hair with this simple shift.

[prodmod]1. Multi-Dimensional Colors
Colorist: Brandy Sims & Stephanie Lipsey, Master Colorists at Replenish Salon in Atlanta, Georgia
Brandy & Stephanie: We think multi-dimensional vibrant tones will be really popular this year. “Multi-dimensional” means that 3-5 tones are strategically placed to create bold focal points in the hair. They make an eye-catching statement, as these color services allow the client’s hair to be a canvas where the colorist places contrasting tones in a free-handed way. It allows each client to have a unique look that is sure to get compliments. We call this our “stiletto” technique! This color looks best on hair that is at least 4-5 inches long with volume or layers, so you can truly see the dimensions of color.
Color tips: This look is best achieved when the colorist allows their mind to be free of “traditional foil placements.” It is more effective when the colorist keeps in mind where the client would like to see color, where it will fall, and the shape of the head, but allows their creativity to shine through. With vibrant tones, it’s always important to use a color line and treatment that provides a balance of moisture and strength to lock in the color and maintain the integrity of the client’s hair.
2. Hazelnut
Colorist: James Corbett, Clairol Color Director, Owner and Team Member of James Corbett Studio in NYC
James: A hot hair color of 2017 is also a Pantone color for the spring — hazelnut. My fellow studio colorist Tina Mulrayn and I just colored some extensions for Alicia Keys in this color, so keep an eye out for it! It is a medium light neutral brown that has a natural earthiness about it with an inherent warmth. This is the next evolution of the nude trend we started to see last year.
Color tips: Hazelnut looks great on most skin tones from darker to lighter complexions. However, I am personally not a fan of the monochromatic, which is when the skin tone and hair color are too close in hue. My big tip is remember that as you lighten your hair color, you will expose warm tones. Choose a light ash blonde shade (ash kills brass!”>. If you want to DIY, 10/87 from Clairol Nice ‘N Easy is a great shade, but remember to do pieces.. not the whole head! If you need to adjust the tone after you have lifted the color, a great at home toner is Clairol Natural Instincts, which will deposit color and condition with aloe and vitamin E as you color.
3. Bronde
Colorist: Gabrielle Henderson, Colorist, Editorial Stylist, and Owner of HUESbyGabrielle in Houston, Texas
Gabrielle: 2017 will be the year of the bronde trend – not blonde, not brunette, but a gorgeous middle. Bronde is flattering on just about anyone. It’s all about finding the right tone that suits the client’s complexion: combining the natural hair color with sunkissed highlights, framing the hairline and the ends.
Color tips: The key to achieving this color is to have a lot of your natural hair color showing through, with lighter ribbons flowing throughout. If your hair is black, I recommend a consultation with a colorist to talk about taking you 2 shades lighter so the natural color is more fluid with added highlights. I highly recommend using DevaCurl Low Poo Shampoo and Conditioner for Color Treated Hair when coloring. If you are looking a little brassy, use Joico Color Endure Violet Shampoo to cancel that out.
4. Buttery Blonde
Colorist: Christo, Global Artistic Director of Christo Fifth Avenue and Curlisto Systems in NYC
Christo: It is very hard to pick one color because there is a variety of colors that are on demand as the seasons change. However, if I had to choose just one, the most popular and most daring color pick for curls during 2017 has to be Buttery Blonde. It is not the simplest color to have but when the stylist gets it right, you will look like a curl goddess! Buttery Blonde is the perfect look to flaunt all year with its warm shades and splashes of honey yellow highlights.
Color tips: DO NOT try this at home! In fact, this is a color that must be consulted with your colorist first to make sure your hair can handle the process. Depending on the level of your natural hair color, it can take a minimum of 3 hours and even up to 6 hours! The hair must be pre-conditioned with a masque to avoid any damage. When the hair is dry, we use the bayalage method to paint thinner and thicker pieces in order to create a dimensional effect. After the bayalage process, proceed with a color accent, which will take away left over darker strands and browns and give you a beautiful, natural blonde base.
5. Natural
Colorist: Danielle Skrocki, Curl Specialist and Owner of Stylist317 in Indianapolis, Indiana
Danielle: A rich, earthy, natural and wearable color is what I’m seeing for 2017. Following in the vein of Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year being focused around “taking a deep breath” and “coming from nature,” I foresee color moving away from fashion shades and into more natural tones, with softer highs and lows. The great thing about these softer and more natural tones is that they look great on everyone! It’s best to consult with your colorist whether your skin tone would be better suited for a warm or cool color.
Color tips: When consulting with your colorist, mention words like “natural,” “soft,” “seamless” and “organic.” These shades can be achieved without the use of harsh lighteners/color, which is so important if you’re looking to keep the integrity of your curls as you’re coloring. I like to use Aloxxi color because it is cruelty free and has a permanent line that contains less ammonia than other permanent lines out there.
6. High Contrast Balayage
Colorist: Stephanie Lawrence, Owner and Master Stylist of Black Canvas Salon in Londonderry, New Hampshire
Stephanie: I think we are going to see a huge spike in high contrast balayage and vivids making their way into the hair in more subtle ways. For the high contrast balayages, having a darker base with sections of honey, platinum and everything in between will be very popular. As for the vivids, more and more people are expressing themselves with vivids or pastels but since our work environments haven’t caught up with the times, they are doing it more subtly… whether it’s at the root and melted into a blonde, or doing a balayage and then having an overlay of a dusty rose or lilac or pop of hidden color.
Color tips: Do your research on stylists first. Cheaper isn’t always better and the most expensive isn’t necessarily either. Check out their social media. See what they are currently doing and if their style matches your goal. Also be patient. Most stylists would love nothing more than to get you to your goal in one session but sometimes it’s just not possible.
7. Cool Red
Stylists: Robin Sjoblom, Curl Specialist and Owner, and Beth Johnson, Colorist and Curl Specialist at Southern Curl, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia
Robin & Beth: Our clientele is approximately 75% 3C-4C, so they tend to have a darker base color to begin with. Therefore, we are forecasting various shades of red that will compliment their skin tones and natural color. They can stay within 3-4 levels of their darker natural shade and have their own vibrancy without going “blonde/bronde” and frying their hair with bleach! For that reason, cool reds are our favorite here at Southern Curl. They reflect light and have a beautiful shine and intensity when painted curl by curl. Reds work well because the hair doesn’t have to be lifted as light to achieve the desired results, which keeps curls healthier and happier.
Color tips: Olaplex protects the integrity of the hair by protecting the bonds during the color process. Cool reds or violet reds are ideal for clients with naturally dark hair. Copper and cinnamon tones work well for natural brunettes. Strawberry and rose gold tones work well for natural blondes and fair skin.
8. Golden Blonde Balayage
Colorist: Kelly Anker, Curl Advocate and Owner of Kelly Elaine Inc. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Kelly: A natural looking Golden Blonde Balayage will be a popular hair color in 2017. This color will make your curls look like they have been kissed by the Caribbean sun. Free-hand balayaging allows for a subtle grow-out by providing a dark root with a bold, bright mid-length and ends. The colorist takes into consideration the curly hair cut, client’s skin tone, natural hair and eye colors to formulate the right color that will give the desired sun kissed glow. This color can vary from pale blonde tips for lighter haired clients to a nice, warm caramel for darker haired clients.
Color tips: For kissed-by-the-sun color, it is important to start with healthy hair. I recommend getting regular trims every 10-12 weeks and using professional curly hair care products such as Innersense Organics Beauty. This will ensure your hair is healthy and in the right shape to achieve those sun-kissed, hand-painted Balayage highlights. You should insist that your stylist use Olaplex for any highlighting or coloring service to protect your curls, as well as using high quality hair colors such as Goldwell, Framesi or Joico.
9. Rich & Warm
Colorist: Glenn Charles, Colorist and Curly Stylist at Michael Flores Salon in Dallas, Texas
Glenn: My curly clients will be asking for lighter shades this year — rich, warm tones like honey and caramel. These tones blend nicely with light brown to dark brown hair. Yadi (pictured above”> has naturally dark brown hair. I wanted to brighten her overall appearance and show off her natural texture. When considering color placement, I’m inspired by children’s end-of-summer hair colors. Each one is individual, and precisely imperfect — like naturally curly hair.
Color tips: Whether painting freehand or weaving out selective strands and placing in foil, highlights offer the greatest freedom to customize hair color. The contrast created by strategically lightened curls gives the illusion of movement and lightness. As a final step of the color process, a demi-permanent liquid color adds richness and luster to the hair (think of this step as the staining for your wood floors”>. To mimic nature, I create depth at the root by using one shade darker or allowing the glaze to process for slightly more time at the root area before pulling through the remaining lengths. For Yadi, I used a creme lightener by Joico mixed with a low volume developer and processed it at room temperature. Weekly moisture treatments are the most important follow-up to any color service. My favorite product is DevaCurl’s Heaven In Hair Intense Moisture Treatment.

November 20th is the second annual National Head Wrap Day – a day where ladies from all over the country unite to rock their gorgeous head wraps.
The origins of the women wrapping fabrics around their hair are many and far-reaching. In America, head wraps were originally used during slavery as a way to fuel oppression and signify enslavement. Since then the head wrap has become a tangible symbol of perseverance and empowerment in African American culture. Now, beautifully wrapped scarves and ties don the heads of some of the most incredible and powerful women our world has to offer. Here are 25 ladies all over the world slaying the head wrap game.
If these photos make you want to wear a head wrap too, then enter our giveaway at the end of the article to win a special edition National Head Wrap Day wrap by Ruby Sampson!

Whether you’re rushing to throw a last-minute costume together or you’re tweaking the disguise you’ve been planning for all all year long, these ideas center around one of your greatest assets – your curls!
We threw in some ideas of costumes that you and your non-curly besties can dress up as together, because we don’t want anyone to feel left out. However, most of these costumes DEMAND curls, so choose wisely!
1″> Sugar Skull
If you like the idea of transforming into a skeleton, but want a little more flair and color, use this sugar skull look as your muse. This is perfect for all you flower children out there. Curls optional but encouraged.
2″> Solange
We’re still not over A Seat at the Table, in fact NaturallyCurly editor came to work with her hair like this as an ode to her spirit animal Solange, and it wasn’t even Halloween. This might be the quickest, easiest costume on this list and chances are you already have the clips in your bathroom drawer. We’re tempted to rock this look every single day.
3″> Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad
No woman walked out of the Suicide Squad movie without thinking, “I want to be Harley Quinn for Halloween, or just in life in general.” You don’t need to be a straight-haired blonde or get a wig to be the Joker’s lover this weekend — there are plenty of ladies rocking the curls their mama gave them.
4″> Medusa
Dress up as one of the most powerful and magnificent characters from Greek mythology. They say that one gaze at Medusa’s face would turn any onlooker to stone, not to mention scare them to death with poisonous snakes. Throw in a few snakes or turn your locs into the real deal with plenty of wire and gel to terrify your friends.
5″> Winifred from Hocus Pocus
If you’re looking for a group costume, gather your two besties and dress up as everyone’s favorite witch trio this Halloween. Put on your cape, grab your broomsticks and torment the town. @mc_kennamarie’s take on Winifred is too amazing not to copy.
6″> Dionne Davenport from Clueless
“Use your popularity for a good cause” this Halloween by gracing everyone with your presence as Dionne. Ride solo, argue with your boyfriend or kick it with your bestie – you decide! If you are currently sporting braids this week, there is nothing you can say that will convince us you have a better costume in mind than Dionne.
7″> Magenta from The Rocky Horror Show
If your curls are feeling particularly frizzy when you wake up the morning of October 31st, fear not! All you have to do is rub your eyes to smudge your eyeliner to transform into this creepy maid (no magic required”>. Make sure to watch some Rocky Horror Picture Show before your soiree to help you get into character.
8″> Merida from Brave
Redhead curlies needed! Be brave this Halloween and let your curls fly free. Plus, you can always use the bow and arrow you bought two years ago for your Katniss Everdeen costume (you can laugh, you know it’s true”>.
9″> Haunted Doll
Whether you’re a makeup guru or a paint my numbers type gal, anyone can do a great job at a creepy doll. All you need to do is channel the soul of the doll that was on the shelf at the guest bedroom of your great aunt’s house.
10″> Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City
If you’re running low on time and have a tulle skirt hanging in your closet, Carrie Bradshaw is the choice you need to make! Fluff up your hair and put on your favorite Manolo Blahniks (or any shoe will do, really”>. Bonus points if you run around the sidewalk looking slightly confused and fabulously flustered.
11″> Hermione from Harry Potter
Curlies and wavies – grab your wand and pleated skirt. Your spirit sister is here. What’s not to love about Hermione? Pair this costume with a double dose of sass and get out there. Your friends will be spellbound by your beauty.
12″> Skeleton
This costume allows you to look as classy as possible in your black and white outfit, but shock people when you turn around. The fabulous part about this is that you can go full body with your costume, or keep it concentrated with just the face — both are equally as great.
13″> Minnie Mouse
Who wouldn’t want to be everyone’s favorite, most lovable mouse? The greatest thing about this costume is that you can rock afro puffs as your Minnie ears. Who else can say they can do that? No one. That’s the truth.
14″> Bellatrix Lestrange
If you have long hair, a black dress and white eyeshadow you’re most of the way to a very convincing Bellatrix Lestrange costume. Even if you don’t have long hair, NaturallyCurly editor Cristina used clip-in extensions and CurlFormers to recreate this look. Follow Cristina’s tutorial for this costume here.
15″> Slash
If you are blessed with dark curls, throw on a top hat, stick a cigarette in your mouth, and get out the door! Remember to announce your arrival to the party with your pre-rehearsed take on “Welcome to the Jungle.” The best part is, males and females can rock this look equally as well.
16″> Prince
We were floored by NaturallyCurly writer Rochelle’s Prince transformation, and the fact that she DIY’d her own Purple Rain blazer with a cardigan, shoulder pads and some studs. Follow Rochelle’s step-by-step tutorial for this costume here.

Autumn not only brings more frizz-free days, but a brand new palette of colors as well! If you’ve been getting into the fall spirit and have the urge to usher in cooler weather with a change to your hair color, we have options for you. Whether you want a major change or a small tweak, all 10 colors are such fabulous choices for the fall that you’ll have a hard time picking which to ask your stylist for.
Soft blues and greys with pops of deep emerald and dusty rose are Pantone’s chosen colors for fall 2016, and we happen to agree with them. If you think they look fantastic in clothing, just wait until you see what they can do for your hair.
It is important to note, that to achieve truly vibrant colors like many of the ones on this list, you will have to lighten your hair if you have naturally dark hair. You can’t achieve a color like lavender or emerald by dying over dark hair. Lightening the hair does cause damage, so you will likely notice a change in texture as well as the way your hair feels and behaves. This is not to say that you can’t color your hair, but just that you will likely need to change your regimen and take action to protect your hair health through this process.
1. Warmth
As the weather gets colder, your friends will look to you as a beacon of warmth. It is actually difficult to look at this hair color without feeling like sunshine is beaming down on you. @frogirlginny’s gorgeous hair makes us smile and @beautystylealessia’s artwork is golden.

2. Cinnamon
If you’ve always wanted to be a fiery redhead, this is your green light! This scarlet color has a bright pop and only makes me think of one thing: passion. The best part is, it is closer to a natural color in case you’re a little more shy about coloring. We love @kaylamadonna’s scarlet color and @killadoesthat’s bright hue.
Pictured: @kaylamadonna & @killadoesthat
3. Emerald
You don’t have to buy a 2 Carat ring for a pop of emerald. This jewel-tone is to die for this season. Whether you decide on emerald tips or highlights here and there, you win major luxury points. @nonaoyenis sporting this beautiful dip-dye and@hairbydonettahas done it again with this rich emerald crown.

4. Lavender
Purple, mauve, lilac, violet – whichever shade you love, what better time to take the leap than this fall? This is best done when mixing with a soft grey hue and will leave you looking like royalty.@hairbymeryn did a fabulous job mixing this color in.

5. Jet black
Some are blessed by this beautiful, striking hair. Others, not so much. If you aren’t, why not try it out?@ke.nne.dy’s hair will surely make you run to the salon ASAP and I love how@nanda_blog’shair gorgeously cascades down her shoulders.

6. Soft blue
This beautiful airy blue shade allows you to go all out, or mix with blonde hues and dark roots. You may even forget that you’re not an ice princess. We love@Keannehair’stake on this gorgeous concept.

7. Dark roots
Why not take advantage of the fact that dark roots are in style right now? Save some money by letting your beachy summer hair grow out, or splurge a little to achieve this great look from scratch. After all, we’re all about looking effortless, right? I absolutely love @lauriebot’s look. As a commenter said, “I’m diggin’ that hair,” and so are we!
Pictured: @lauriebot
8. Cherry bombre
This hair color looks like a cross between Cherry Coke and chocolate fudge cake. The fabulous thing about this rich color is that you can make it as cherry or as chocolate as you’d like. @sensualsierra’s cherry bombre look proves our point.
Pictured: @sensualsierra
9. Dusty rose
Rose gold has been EVERYWHERE recently. For this upcoming season, lose the brightness of gold and bring on a richer hue of dust. @makeme_upkatelyn and @gabriellearmanini‘s takes on dusty rose are flawless.
Pictured: @makeme_upkatelyn & @gabriellearmanini
10. Silver grey
This icy silver color will turn every head wherever you go. Keep it fully silver or use it as a backdrop for pops of bright colors. This is not your grandma’s hair, ladies… @cpikillah’s hair is GOALS.

It’s important to work with an experienced colorist when attempting many of these colors. If you have yet to find a curly hair stylist you love, check out our Salon Finder to find a stylist in your area and read reviews from other curlies.
Don’t co-wash
Scalp conditions that cause excessive dandruff and an oily scalp require thorough cleansing. Co-washing with a daily conditioner or using a cleansing conditioner tends to exacerbate scalp problems. Co-washes are formulated for gentle cleansing and curl hydration, so they are not adequate for effectively removing excessive sebum and debris from the scalp that cause irritation. Shampoo is your best friend, and a clean scalp is always the end goal to reduce itchiness and stave off wash day sooner than later.
When you have textured hair and a scalp condition you become a master at finding the perfect shampoo. Lately I have been loving the Soultanicals Honey, I Shrunk the Frizz shampoo bar. My scalp is left clean and my curls do not tangle. Here are my other favorites: 5 Types of Shampoo Every Curly Girl Should Know.
Don’t wear extensions or locs
Extension twists and locs are not the best styling options for those with a chronic scalp condition like seborhheic dermatitis. Unlike the small white flakes of dandruff, scales from seborrheic dermatitis tend to be larger, enveloping the root of multiple strands, making it tremendously difficult to remove without breaking your hair. Washing my hair requires that I create small sections to ensure the shampoos encompasses the entire surface of my scalp. Then, after gently scrubbing, I must create small parts for the shower stream to make direct contact with my scalp for a thorough removal. Over the years I have been able to condense my shampoo time down to 45 minutes but that alone feels ridiculous. I envy those with normal scalps.
If this is what is takes for me to maintain a clean, healthy scalp, I can only image how challenging it would be if I wore locs or extension twists. This process has to be done at least once a week to avoid visible flakes and reduce inflammation and irritation. I wish I had the option to wear sisterlocks or extension twists for 6-8 weeks at a time, due to my need to frequently wash my hair the style would not be as polished as I would like. Also, I don’t want to burden a hairstylist with having to remove the scales without breaking my hair, as removal would be more difficult with locs.

How does your scalp condition limit your options?
Wedding season is in full swing and deciding on the perfect hair ‘do is as important now as it was when you first got engaged. Figuring out what to do with you hair can be harder than it seems. We’ve put together a top 10 list to make deciding on, and achieving, your dream look one of the less stressful things that needs to be done for the big day.
- Decide on your dress before you pick your hairstyle: While you might think you have the perfect style picked out for your hair, it might not match the dress that you end up choosing. Having a basic idea of what you want is always a good idea, but do not set your mind to a specific ‘do until you have purchased.
- Find pictures of something similar: Some people are not good with describing their hairstyle they had in mind. Find pictures of things you like so you can be sure the stylist knows what you envision.
- Don’t assume the person who cuts your hair is the best choice: Just because they can cut your hair well does not mean they are great at up ‘dos. If you want an up ‘do or something you think your stylist might not have ever done before, do some research and find out who has a great reputation when it comes to wedding hairstyles.
- Test and products at least two weeks in advance: If you are using new products before your wedding, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to test them out. If you give yourself two weeks you’ll have a good idea of how your hair will respond to these products and you’ll also know if you need to change things up before the wedding.
- Do not wash your hair the day of: We have all been told that day-old hair works better than clean. While you might be tempted to wash your hair because having perfectly clean hair makes you feel better, don’t! Stylists say day-old hair works better for a reason! Your hair’s natural oils will help the stylists shape the hair however you want it.
- If you are using accessories, have extras: So many people bring the accessories that they need for their hair but they don’t think to bring extras. Your accessories could break or simply get lost in the travel to your stylist. With that said, make sure you don’t pick a hair accessory that can’t be duplicated.
- Have a backup plan: The weather can change in instant. Just like you need a backup plan for your venue, you also need a backup plan for your hair.
- Do a run through: You might have an idea of what your hair is going to look like but you cannot be sure until you have done it. This is the most import day of your life and you need to know that your hair is going to be exactly like you imagined!
- Changing hairstyles between the ceremony and reception: This might seem like a pain but more and more brides are doing this so they can be more relaxed during the reception. If you decide that going from a lose up ‘do to a flirty down ‘do is your style, during your run through have the stylists teach one of your bridesmaids how to assist you. You’ll be confident in the outcome and won’t have to pay extra to have the stylist stick around.
- Don’t forget the veil: Numerous wedding photos have great ideas but they don’t always show the veil. When looking at pictures, keep in mind that you will have a veil to add to the hairstyle. Some might cover up the top of certain styles so be on the lookout for the perfect style that will match well with your perfect veil.
