How to Find the Perfect Stylist for Curly Hair

For many with curly hair, it can be a lifelong challenge to find the right stylist, cut and style. There are plenty of hair-owing (sorry!) stories about stylists that didn’t know their way around curls, so they broke out the dreaded thinning shears, added too many layers, or tried to smooth things over with a blowout. But there are stylists who are both experienced and passionate about cutting curls, waves, and textured hair — and here’s how to find them.

Where to Search for a Stylist

Ethan Shaw, stylist and owner of the Curly Hair Austin salon, recommends keeping an eye out for curly cuts you like when you’re at a grocery store, restaurant, or bar, and then inquiring about the stylist. “There’s a curly-hair sisterhood,” says Shaw. More than likely, that person will be happy to share information with a fellow curly-haired person.

An online search is also a helpful place to start. Try “curly hair salon” or “curly hair stylist” and your location. Then, take your time checking out salon websites, stylist bios, and reviews.

Stylist Keith Pattillo of Bella Salon in Austin advises looking for a DevaCurl-accredited stylist. The DevaCurl technique was created at the DevaChan Salon in New York City. The highly touted technique involves cutting curly hair when it’s dry to see how each curl is shaped and falls in order to make it look its best. No “taming” of the curls here; it’s about embracing each one.

Qualities to Look for in a Stylist

Crystal Seeds, a stylist at Method Hair salon in Austin, says that it’s important to find a stylist who will listen carefully to your concerns and specifics, such as “I have a cowlick,” “My hair only curls in humidity,” or “Don’t use the thinning shears on me!”

Pattillo also considers good listening skills essential. He adds:

“A great stylist should be able to answer questions about what style suits your face shape and individual style, as well as have a thorough knowledge of the best products for your hair type.”

There are a number of questions to ask a prospective stylist. If you’ve done a thorough search first, it should be clear that the stylist is comfortable and experienced cutting curly hair, but be sure to confirm.

Next, ask the stylist what his or her approach is to cutting curly hair. Wet or dry?

“Cutting the hair dry helps a stylist see what’s going on and the shape of the cut as it develops,” says Seeds.

While Shaw agrees that a dry-cutting technique like DevaCurl “changed the game for cutting curly hair,” there are times when he cuts hair wet. “This is controversial!” he exclaims with a laugh. According to Shaw, cutting hair wet has its place. He has found that when a curly-haired client is up for a major change, there are advantages to doing both wet and dry cutting. He describes his approach:

“I will rough in [sculpt] the shape while the hair is wet. Then, when the hair is dry, I fine-tune it.”

Shaw adds that the tighter the curls, the greater the likelihood of a completely dry cut.

For Seeds, it’s all about avoiding the awful “Christmas tree” effect: short on top and longer on the bottom. Proper layering is important, she says, so ask your prospective stylist what their layering approach is.

Pattillo also has his own approach.

“The DevaCurl technique helps me to take my time to understand the nature of someone’s particular hair type and how best to give them a great style that they can work with.”

Every stylist is different, of course, so let the prospective stylist know what you’re looking for and how you style your hair. Then ask how he or she would approach your hair.

Common Curly-Hair Mistakes

Just as you may have had your share of disappointing experiences, the three Austin-based stylists have also seen many mistakes in both cutting and styling curly hair.

In addition to the Christmas tree, Seeds has seen both too few and too many layers added, and incorrectly. She and Pattillo agree that using thinning shears can be a big mistake because, as Pattillo details, they distort the curl pattern and can make curly hair frizzy.

Shaw emphasizes that mistakes can be made when clients are styling their hair.

“While their hair is drying, they can mess with it too much. While the hair is still pretty wet, put styling product in — that’s when you’re setting the shape in — then leave it alone. Once it’s completely dry, shake it out just at the roots. Don’t rake through your hair with your fingers or you can make a mess!”

Cutting Curly Hair Is Personal

The three stylists all share a passion for cutting curly hair — again, an important quality when searching a stylist.

For Seeds, cutting curly hair is very personal, as she has curly hair.

“I went through my own life looking for that perfect haircut, and I want to give that to others,” says Seeds.

Pattillo also has curly hair. While he’s worked with hair of all textures in his decades as a stylist, it was “a game-changer” when he learned the DevaCurl technique a couple years ago. He’s impressed with the quality of education and the products, and that there’s a community that people can join to understand and love their curls — just like NaturallyCurly.

Shaw, whose wife has curly hair, found his passion for curly hair years ago when he was sent to New York City to further his education as a salon hairdressing instructor. The flat iron era was at its height, and his instructors considered this a disaster. “There’s no art to that style,” Shaw remembers them lamenting. So they instructed their students to really look at each client’s hair, and to find out what works best. Around the same time, he recalls, NaturallyCurly was founded.

“I became passionate about curly hair. It’s always a puzzle. It’s never the same!” says Shaw.

Shaw’s curly-hair clients have expressed to him that finding a wearable hairstyle they can do with ease daily at home has been life-changing.

You, too, can find that stylist and cut that could change your life. Do your research, ask the right questions, and see if you like what you hear before the haircut begins.

Exploring Products and Tools on Your Own

While your future stylist will be knowledgeable about hair products and have a line he or she prefers, NaturallyCurly also has recommended products you may be interested in exploring, including shampoos, conditioners and oils, hairstyling, and tools and accessories.

10 Curl Activators That Won’t Dry Out

Curl and moisture? It doesn’t have to be a head-scratcher. You can activate your curls, coils, and waves without flaking out or adding crunch. Here’s a hot list of 10 curl activators that define and hydrate.

What is a Curl Activator?

A curl activator can be applied to wet hair as a moisturizing step before your styling product. It won’t give your waves, curls, or coils much hold, but it can help prevent frizz and add shine, moisture, and softness to the hair. Many curl activators contain glycerin, a common humectant ingredient that attracts moisture to the hair strand.

Can a Curl Activator Make Your Hair Curly?

Curl-activating products are formulated to enhance your natural curl pattern. They don’t have the power to turn straight or wavy hair into curly hair, but they help temporarily activate your naturally occurring curls (this is not a perm!).

1. AG Hair Curl Re: Coil Curl Activator

“Like Abracadabra,” the “Holy Grail!” and “gold!” — NaturallyCurly members give this product high praise for curl definition, frizz control, and hold without added weight or greasy feel. AG Hair Care claims that “nothing defines, maintains and moisturizes curls” like their activator. No salt, PABA, parabens, gluten, DEA, or animal testing.

2. Cantu Shea Butter Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream

10 Curl Activators That Won’t Dry Out

This is another fan favorite because of its satisfying results and low price. Users report amazing curls that move, reduce frizz, and improve hair health. It’s made with pure shea butter and no mineral oil, sulfates, parabens, silicones, phthalates, gluten, paraffin, or propylene.

3. SoftSheen-Carson Care Free Curl Gold Instant Activator

Users are quite satisfied with the curl definition this activator delivers, its lasting power, and its “round-the-clock” moisturizing. No dry, greasy, or stiff curls or coils. Hair is silky smooth.

4. Luster’s S-Curl Activator and Moisturizer

10 Curl Activators That Won’t Dry Out

With this activator, you can define your curl and condition it. It contains glycerin, vitamin B5, and botanical conditioning agents like argan and olive oils to help eliminate breakage and add softness and shine. Users are pleased with its moisturizing might. It has an anti-frizz formula without heaviness or crunch. No parabens or mineral oil.

5. Creme of Nature with Argan Moisture & Shine Curl Activator Creme

One user said that her natural hair loved this highly concentrated product. The rich, creamy formula revives and transforms dry curls into soft, flexible, defined ones. It also keeps the frizz down. No sulfates, silicones, mineral oil, or petrolatum.

6. Twisted Sista Curl Activator Creme

10 Curl Activators That Won’t Dry Out

“No crunch, just soft curls,” said a user. The manufacturer touts that their non-greasy formula instantly activates curls and defines them, adding volume and shine. Contains glycerin, but no sulfate or protein.

7. Aveda Be Curly™ Curl Enhancer

This enhancer, which contains wheat protein and organic aloe, expands on wet hair and retracts on dry to help bring out the curl. Users report curls that are smooth and frizz-free. It’s also free from parabens, mineral oil, petrolatum, formaldehyde, and synthetic fragrance.

8. CurlSmith Moisture Memory Reactivator

10 Curl Activators That Won’t Dry Out

CurlSmith has a little dose of magic with their curl activator that can help refresh and revive curls between wash days. Whether you have dry hair or it’s slightly damp, this can easily rejuvenate your curls, coils, and waves with just a few spritzes.

9. SheaMoisture Smoothie Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie

10 Curl Activators That Won’t Dry Out

This has been a fan favorite for years and has won multiple awards due to its dual properties as an all-natural leave-on styling cream specially formulated for wavy, curly hair. This enhancing smoothie bottles the benefits of Silk Protein, an important ingredient that softens unruly locks, making them irresistibly smooth and easy to manage.

How to Add Volume to Wavy Hair by Using the Rainbow Clipping Method
How to Add Volume to Wavy Hair by Using the Rainbow Clipping Method

Image:@reallifecurlygirl

Attention, 2As. ATTENTION, 2As! You with the flat crown and “swavy” hair. Don’t be discouraged. Fellow 2A here with encouraging news to report: You can create volume and curl at your crown with the rainbow clipping technique.

Fellow 2A here with encouraging news to report: You can create volume and curl at your crown with the rainbow clipping technique.

CurlTalk member Katherinejane76 discovered the rainbow clipping technique in a YouTube video made by Kristy, salon director of Uptown Curl in Minneapolis, MN.
After washing her fellow stylist Lauren’s hair, Kristy flips the wet hair forward and applies DevaCurl B’Leave In Curl Boost and Volumizer. “Less is really more,” she advises, as she applies a dime-sized amount of the product from roots to ends in a several scrunches. For a longer-lasting hold, Kristy adds DevaCurl Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam after in another round of scrunching. She’s careful not to rake through the hair and pull the curl out. Time to dry.
While Kristy uses a microfiber towel to carefully blot the hair of its excess water, she drops some knowledge: “It’s really important with swavy hair that you blot the root. You don’t want there to be too much water weight left behind at the root, because it’s going to cause it to be heavy and end up with a lot of drag at the scalp.” No kidding!
Kristy moves on to working with a set of DevaCurl DevaClips (the DevaClips have been discontinued but you can try these Curly Girl Root Clips“>. She slides a few closely along Lauren’s scalp to encourage volume as the hair dries. “The important thing when you’re applying these,” she notes. “Is that you feel it along your scalp.” The clips need to be flush with the scalp, so they won’t float or flip over. In the tutorial, Kristy uses four clips from the front to the back of Lauren’s head. Then it’s time for the highly anticipated technique, “specifically for swavy hair.”

How to Rainbow Clip Your Roots for More Volume

  1. Pinch about an inch of hair and hold it in the shape of an arc with your fingers.
  2. With your other hand, open a clip slightly and slide it into that section of hair.
  3. Note: Rather than going flush with the scalp, aim for the center of the hair arc.
  4. Repeat around your hair crown to create as much of a wave pattern as desired.

Don’t worry about being precise with your arcs. Kristy encourages that it’s ideal for them to look a little bit messy.

Diffuse for Added Volume

Time to diffuse your rainbow arcs and the rest of your hair. Make sure you’re using a cup or basket attachment, and that you have the dryer set on low speed and heat. When the hair is about 75 percent dry, remove the clips and complete the diffusing upside down.
When the hair is completely dry, Kristy applies a small amount of Innersense Inner Peace Whipped Cream Texturizer for extra volume at the root and definition. Kristy finishes the look with a few spritzes of DevaCurl Flexible-Hold Hair Spray.
In final words of encouragement to 2A viewers, Kristy says, “It is totally possible to have volume and curl and maximize what you have when you have swavy hair.”
CurlTalk members have found that even if your wavy hair is thicker, this technique can still be really useful for giving you the crown volume you’re looking for.
Overall, CurlTalk members were pleased with their rainbow clipping results.
Therese1 said, “I’ve tried this a couple of times now, and I got good results both times. I’ve always had problems diffusing upside down, because it does weird things to my roots. Clipping and diffusing the clipped areas first eliminates the wonky roots. And removing the clips before the final diffusing helps eliminate indentation marks in my hair. Great video.”

Have you heard of the rainbow clipping technique before? If you’ve tried it, let us know how it works for you in the comments below.

The Science of Chemo Curls
The Science of Chemo Curls

Breast Cancer Awareness Month takes me back to six years ago when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. After surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, I’m grateful that she remains cancer-free today. It was quite a journey. I recall, among many other things, how distressing it was to watch her lose her hair, and then how grateful I felt watching it slowly return. My mother has always had very thick, straight hair. So to see the waves come through was delightful for both of us. She’s not alone. Many women experience a temporary change in texture from straight to curly — known as chemo curls — and even color in their post-chemotherapy hair growth. But why?

Why Chemo Curls Happen

One theory is that the chemotherapy drugs cannot distinguish between cancerous and healthy cells, like those that are responsible for hair regrowth, so it destroys them all. Most chemotherapy drugs attack rapidly growing cancer cells, but because the cells in our hair roots also grow quickly, they, too, are affected by chemotherapy drugs. As the drugs slowly leave the body and regrowth begins, changes in hair texture and color can occur. Generally, these changes are not permanent — as in the case of my mother whose hair returned to its very straight texture, much to her disappointment.

A Hair Therapist’s Opinion

Shanna Moll is an experienced hair integration specialist and master stylist at Shanna Moll Studio in Austin. Her popular studio provides services, including trichological — the medical and cosmetic study of the hair and scalp — testing and treatment, to women who are experiencing hair loss.

In Moll’s experience with clients who have gone through chemotherapy, chemo curls can last between 18 to 24 months before the hair returns to its original texture. Like the current scientific understanding around chemo curls, Moll agrees, “There are a lot of unknowns.”

Moll works with her clients, each in their own private room, throughout their hair loss experience, whether from chemotherapy or other causes. She sees clients at various stages, such as when hair loss has occurred and clients would like to be fitted for a wig or during natural hair regrowth. Incidentally, like the texture and color of hair that returns, so too can the hair loss vary from person to person. Moll shows her clients how to care for their scalp and regrowth as well as the number of curly-hair styles available to them.

Here are 5 Products for Chemo Curls to Make Your Re-Growth Journey Easier.

Embracing the Curls

In my research for this article, I came across online posts on how to “banish” and “rid” oneself of chemo curls. I was struck by the similarity to what some naturally curly-haired women feel before they are ready to embrace their curls.

As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, and during this most important month, I sincerely wish strength and health to all of you who on your own breast cancer journey. I would also like to encourage you to embrace your hair regrowth, especially if it’s chemo curls. May you wear them with pride.

Here’s a Beginner’s Guide to Wearing Your Hair Curly.

Science might not have a great answer for why hair comes back curly after chemotherapy, but we do know the women who have been through it! Get the personal side to chemo curls, and how this woman survived the ordeal.

Can Acupuncture Affect Hair Growth?
Can Acupuncture Affect Hair Growth

Image: istock

Hair has weight. As a woman, you may attach your power, femininity, fertility, sensuality, or even magic to it. So if your hair is thinning, your hairline receding, and a bald spot growing, you may feel like you’re losing a part of your identity. You may also feel embarrassed and ashamed; especially when you notice curious eyes wander up to that area. But there are options to help stop hair loss and regrow hair, such as acupuncture.

The Root of Hair Loss: Imbalance

According to Ann Mowat, licensed acupuncturist and founder of acupuncture and wellness clinic 512Wellness in Austin, Texas, in traditional Chinese medicine, hair loss is a sign of hormonal imbalance in the body.

Imbalance can be present in one, two, or all three of the organ systems that traditional Chinese medicine considers important to maintaining a healthy hormone system: the spleen, liver, and kidneys. Your diet and the amount of stress and strain you experience can affect these organs, which in turn can affect your “qi” or “chi”— your life force — and blood. Hair is an extension of blood. If your qi and blood are stagnant or deficient, they can affect the growth of your hair. Through acupuncture and herbal medicine, balance can be restored and your hair can be properly nourished for growth.

“Think of the balance like a river,” says Mowat. “When the current is flowing evenly, nothing’s getting stuck. The fish are moving. The plants are thriving. But if the rain pours, then the river begins to overflow and create a disturbance. By contrast, there could be no rain at all, and the river could dry up over time. The key to hair health and growth — and overall health and wellness — is to maintain the balance.”

The Organs Connected to Hair Loss and Growth

In traditional Chinese medicine, the role of each organ extends beyond the traditional Western biomedical understanding. Its approach to restoring hormonal balance is to examine how well the spleen, liver, and kidneys are functioning, and to support them accordingly.

The spleen not only aids in the smooth flow of blood, but also in the digestion of food and assimilation of nutrients. Heavy periods, which sometimes go hand in hand with hair loss, are one sign that your spleen could use a boost. Another is weak digestion, such as bloating, gas, or loose stools. Mowat says that the spleen needs to maintain “a strong digestive fire,” which she likens to a pilot light. To keep the fire burning and the light on, she recommends that her patients cut back on dairy and wheat, and to warm up the diet if it primarily consists of colder foods like salads or smoothies.

The liver is an extension of the nervous system. Mowat also calls it “the ultimate time keeper” — for example, it’s involved in regulating the length of the menstrual cycle. When the liver is overwhelmed with stress or anxiety, it can create qi or blood stagnation and disrupt the flow of blood. Symptoms can include PMS or a quick temper. When the liver is overcome, it passes the stress on to the spleen, which can lead to hair loss.

Finally, the kidneys are our “jing,” which translates to “essence.” Traditional Chinese medicine holds that when women have difficulty conceiving, they don’t have enough jing. Furthermore, as women age, their jing can decrease, leading to menopause. Key indicators in both Western and Eastern medicine are hot flashes, night sweats, and hair loss.

How Acupuncture Can Regrow Hair

Once an acupuncturist has assessed the health of these three primary organs through an in-depth health assessment form and discussion, she or he will determine which organ is most out of balance and in need of attention.

To begin to restore balance and help affect hair growth, Mowat recommends at least 10-20 acupuncture treatments, which include specific acupuncture points, particularly along the hairline to stimulate growth, and prescribed Chinese herbal medicine.

“Acupuncture is not a quick fix,” advises Mowat. “It takes time to restore balance and affect hair growth.”

In addition to traditional Chinese medicine, Mowat also encourages her clients to support body and spirit through lifestyle changes, like improving one’s diet, reducing stress through meditation, and reconnecting with oneself.

The actual experience of acupuncture — being cared for and given the space to unwind — is also restorative, adds Mowat.

The Cost of Treatment

There are two options for acupuncture treatment: private and community. For new patients in a private setting, the initial health assessment session can take 90 minutes and cost $90-$125. Follow-up sessions are 60 minutes and cost $45-$85 per session. In a community or group setting, there can be a sliding scale, ranging from $15 to $45.

Increasingly, health insurance companies recognize acupuncture as a treatment option. Mowat estimates around 40 percent of acupuncturists now accept insurance. Other clients pay out of pocket.

But Can Acupuncture Really Affect Hair Growth?

Yes, it can. But it begins with correcting the hormonal imbalance that created the hair loss in the first place, and this can take time. Hair growth results can vary, of course, but there’s no question that overall health and wellness will improve.

There’s More You Can Do

Make sure to take stock of your hair care products. It’s important to nourish the scalp and hair with nutrient-rich products, like Briogeo BE GENTLE, BE KIND Matcha + Apple Replenishing Superfood Shampoo and conditioner. Take that care to the next level with hair oils, such as Alikay Naturals Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil, SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Hair Serum, and Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

How to Grow Out Your Curly Pixie Cut
How to Grow Out Your Curly Pixie Cut

Image:@niathelight

Like our teenage years, growing out a pixie cut can have very awkward moments. On top of it, a 3B curl texture adds a twist to the already painstaking process. CurlTalk members share their tips for growing out — and getting through — a curly pixie cut.

To begin, stock up on bobby pins, hair wraps, and accessories to manage the awkward stages, and styling products to keep the in-between styles in place. Check out How to Rock Your Pixie Cut at an Awkward Length and How to Style a Long Pixie Cut for hot style ideas.

To trim or not trim? That is a very important question. CurlTalk member Mrl234 advised, “The best way to minimize the awkward growing out is keeping the bottom of the back trimmed while the rest of it catches up, to avoid that ducktail mullet effect.” Whatsercurl agreed, “Mrl234 nailed it with the trims in the back. If you try to just grow without those trims, you’ll get the whole mullet thing going.”

Even before it’s time for the first trim, CurlTalk member (and Curl Virtuoso”> Guide 65 has found that it’s easier to grow out a curly pixie when there’s a good cut in place to start with. Then, “I’d get cuts to reshape it as it grows out. It might take a little longer, but it won’t be quite as painful.”

CurlTalk member BeinDeb agrees: “I’ve done the growing out buzzed cuts three times now. Getting it trimmed to keep it in a good shape works a lot better, or at the least helps you to look and then feel better as the journey continues.”

Encouraging good hair health and growth, such as through hair vitamins that contain biotin, can also help.

And the final must-have for growing out a pixie: patience. Practice plenty of patience to get through the twists and turns of this process. It will be worth it!

How to Plop in a Lingerie Bag
How to Plop in a Lingerie Bag

It’s ironic, but true: A soft, fluffy towel is too rough for curly hair, as it has fibers that both disrupt the curl pattern, and contribute to frizz. That’s why curlies, coilies, and wavies in-the-know use a microfiber or t-shirt towel or plop with a t-shirt to dry their hair.

What is plopping?

Plopping is a method of drying curly hair in which you plop your hair into the center of a t-shirt, microfiber towel, or other cloth and tie it up so that it dries in a pile on top of your head. This helps our hair to dry in curls and spirals rather than stretched out.

Curlies are a resourceful bunch. They invented plopping here on the NaturallyCurly CurlTalk forums and over the years and continue to innovate – like CurlTalk member CurlyJennyD who has discovered a new use for her lingerie bag.

“I think that most of us who are trying to embrace our curls experience endless amounts of frustration in trying to figure out what works, and eliminate what doesn’t,” said CurlyJennyD. Among her discoveries: Plopping with a lingerie wash bag. She finds that the delicates bag also works to protect and dry her delicate 3A/B (+2C”> curls. It allows for curl definition, and a more thorough drying of her hair, compared to plopping with a t-shirt.

How to Plop in a Lingerie Bag Here’s how to plop with a lingerie wash bag:
  • Instead of placing your hair in a t-shirt, plop it into a rectangle lingerie wash bag.
  • Keep the bag on your head with an alligator clip to close it.
  • If the bag is too long, tie a knot at the bottom of the bag to reduce the plopping area. This should give you a closer cup.

This new method has been “a breakthrough” for CurlyJennyD. Previously cupping with a diffuser was too cumbersome, and required too much effort. Her lingerie wash bag cups her hair while it air-dries, resulting in effortlessly springy curls. Also, the bag doesn’t constrict the hair around the temples and face like a towel, t-shirt, or even a hair net does. And if you find that plopping with a towel takes too long to dry, the benefit of the lingerie bag is that it allows better air flow and faster drying time, according to CurlyJennyD.

CurlyJennyD shared this idea, among others, in hopes of helping her fellow curlies with the same hair type or to spark ideas for other curl types. Thank you, CurlyJennyD!

What do you plop with?
The Bunch of Health and Beauty Benefits in Mistletoe

“Oh, ho, the mistletoe!” While the mistletoe’s green leaves and white berries (often confused with holly, which has spiny, dark-green glossy leaves and red berries”> are synonymous with Christmas, the plant has properties that can enhance one’s health and beauty all year long.

Ancient Roots

Long before Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, Nat King Cole, and the Biebs sang about mistletoe in their Yuletide tunes, the parasitic plant’s roots reached back to pre-Christian, Greek, and Roman eras.

According to Live Science, Celtic Druids used the plant for ceremonies. They believed the more rare species found on oak trees had sacred powers, such as healing illnesses, protecting against nightmares, and predicting the future. In ancient Greece, it was associated with fertility, and was used during Saturnalia, a festival honoring the god Saturn, and in marriage ceremonies, which is where the kissing tradition may have originated. During Roman times, it represented peace; enemies would stand beneath it to settle their differences. The Romans also used it as decoration. Additionally, mistletoe has a prominent place in Nordic mythology.

The origin of mistletoe’s name is just as interesting. According to the National Wildlife Federation, mistletoe is a parasitic plant — absorbing water and nutrients from the trees and shrubs it attaches to — with 1,300 species worldwide. When ancient Anglo-Saxons observed that birds liked to leave their droppings where the plant grew, they called it “mistiltan,” which translates to “dung-on-a-twig.” Or, as the Smithsonian defined mistletoe, “a parasite named after bird poop.”

But about those health- and beauty-related properties …

Health Benefits of Mistletoe

Just as with its inclination in the wild, mistletoe has spread across the internet. A number of sites list the plant’s possible health benefits.

Plants Hospital states that it may help reduce blood pressure, treat insomnia by promoting a more restful sleep, alleviate menstrual cramps, improve diabetes by lowering blood sugar, relax the nervous system and reduce stress hormones, fight inflammation, strengthen the immune system, treat upper respiratory issues, stem bleeding, and even quiet snoring.

According to the National Cancer Institute, “mistletoe is one of the most widely used alternative medicine therapies for people with cancer.” Per WebMD and others, European mistletoe been used to treat cancer in Europe since the 1920s.

Of important note, depending on the type of mistletoe and what part is consumed, especially the berries, it could be toxic to people and pets.

Mistletoe is usually available as an extract or tea. Consumption in large quantities is not advised, and could be dangerous. As always, consult a health professional before taking.

Beauty Benefits of Mistletoe

Bustle, Care2, and other sites state that mistletoe’s beauty benefits are due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties from antioxidants.

As Bustle describes, mistletoe can be boiled and made into a homemade toner to help heal damaged skin, regenerate skin cells, and treat acne. It can also be blended into a homemade cream to unclog pores.

Of greatest interest to NaturallyCurly readers is that mistletoe can be used to help strengthen hair follicles, and promote hair growth. Bustle recommends adding mistletoe extract to conditioner or using mistletoe tea as a hair rinse between washes: “Your slightly dirty hair will love those antiseptic properties, while promoting healthy hair.”

And don’t worry about smelling like Christmas when applying mistletoe. As Bustle points also out, drawing from Jonathan’s Mistletoe Diary, despite the abundance of mistletoe candles and potpourri available, mistletoe is scentless.

Have you tried mistletoe for health- or beauty-related matters? Please share below. Happy holidays!
The Advice You Need to Embrace and Celebrate Gray Curls

For decades, gray and silver hair has been a target. Equated with (gasp!”> getting older and too much stress. A persistent color that one struggles with (“stubborn grays,” anyone?”>. The color added a layer of complexity for women who were already straightening their curls. Thankfully, attitudes are changing — and how. Now having gray hair is the hot new trend. More women feel encouraged to embrace their true colors and curls. Trends aside, there are several women celebrating gray and silver curls for the long haul, and sharing what products they use to keep them shining bright and curly.

Silver_n_curls

The Advice You Need to Embrace and Celebrate Gray Curls

“It’s a life-changing experience to embrace my silver curly/wavy hair,” says Vicki at silver_n_curls. “No more applying hair dye to my roots every three to four weeks. For over a year, I’ve been following the Curly Girl Method. No more flat irons or blowouts, or using heat-styling tools that damage my fragile hair. It’s an amazing feeling of freedom.”

Preferred products:

Once a month, Vicki uses Clairol Shimmer Lights Conditioner on her color. Jessicurl is her go-to line for her curls, from shampoo to gel.

Marci loves her silver waves. Her hair started to go gray when she was a teenager. During her 30s, she dyed her hair for a couple of years before going back to her roots. She wondered if her waves would react differently to the change in hair color. There has been one noticeable difference. “I get a lot more compliments on my silver waves than I did with my brunette ones.”

Preferred products:

Like silver_n_curls, Marci also uses Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo and Conditioner to keep her silver sparkling. For her waves, she dips into D:fi D:Struct Molding Creme for hold and finishes off with her “absolute favorite,” Redken Wax Blast 10.

Theloftmedford

Sharita, owner and stylist of theloftmedford outside of Boston, knows that gray and silver hair is not for everyone. But if a client decides to embrace it, she’s all for it. “There is nothing more beautiful than a head full of salt and pepper or gray curls.”

Preferred products:

Sharita encourages her gray- and silver-haired clients to limit the use of heat, which can wreak havoc on both color and curls. More than ever, hair needs moisture, she says. So it’s important to avoid products that can coat the hair, such as silicones or mineral oil. “One of my favorite conditioners/treatments for gray and silver hair is DevaCurl Melt Into Moisture Matcha Green Tea Butter Conditioning Mask.

For women who are thinking of going gray, currently transitioning, or who have already gone gray, Sharita recommends the information and inspiration of “The Silver Hair Handbook” by Lorraine Massey, who’s also the author of “Curly Girl: The NEW Handbook.”

BabyBangz Natural Hair Salon

Image: Marcelcurlsyouon

Marcelcurlsyouon of BabyBangz Natural Hair Salon in New Orleans wants her clients to love their gray and silver curls as much as she loves working on them. She encourages those on the fence about their gray to “love your color and stop covering it up!”

Preferred products:

Because some products can cause gray/silver hair to turn yellow, Marcel recommends a purple shampoo to balance the color out. For her clients’ curls, she likes to use DevaCurl or Ecostyler products.

Speaking of embracing one’s hair, Barbara is welcoming her incoming gray and silver by adding more. She loves that the color allows her to brighten her look without looking too unnatural. Bonus: lower maintenance.

Preferred products:

SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel.

Jeanna inherited her brilliant color from her mother. It took some time, though, to let it shine through. After forgetting to touch up her roots, she decided to let it grow. Simultaneously, she started following the Curly Girl Method. Jeanna didn’t realize then that she was on a journey. Now, she couldn’t be happier with the results. “I’m proud, thankful, and still shocked by the compliments. Plus, I’m relieved: No more roots!”

Preferred products:

Jeanna likes to keep it simple by using two to three products max. She uses Sally Beauty’s GVP Conditioning Balm for a co-wash and leave-in, and Aussie Instant Freeze Sculpting Gel to style. “I scrunch for maybe 10 minutes and diffuse or let it dry completely. Then I scrunch out the crunch.”

When Sabrinia started her color transition, she had no idea what her hair was going to look like. But she took the leap of faith. Now, “I absolutely love my silver curls.” Both the Curly Girl Method and the Magicurl Application Process (MAP”> are essential to keeping her silver curls hydrated and healthy.

Preferred products:

Sabrinia likes Jessicurl Hair Cleansing Cream because it’s gentle on her hair. For hydration and to keep her “wiry bits” under control, she uses Innersense Organic Color Radiance Daily Conditioner. She also uses Sally Beauty’s GVP version of Clairol Shimmer Lights for toner and wears her Thermal Hot Head to help the product penetrate her hair. She uses the wrap again when deep conditioning once a week with either the protein-free Soultanicals Monoi Moisture Slip Deep Conditioning Fertilizing Dip or the gentle-protein Kinky-Curly Stellar Strands. Twice a month, she clarifies her hair with Ion Hard Water Shampoo. To prevent brassiness, Sabrinia uses a shower head water filter, wears a hat in the sun, and only uses clear or white color products on her hair.

Hairqueen_stef

The Advice You Need to Embrace and Celebrate Gray Curls
Image: @hairqueen_stef

Stylist hairqueen_stef on the West Coast knows it can be difficult for a lot of women to transition to their natural gray or silver color. “But there is something special about embracing the natural you, instead of fighting it. Love your curls in every form.”

Preferred products:

In Stephanie’s experience, gray curls need more attention because they can lose a lot of natural oils. For hydration, she recommends using a Moroccan argan oil and a DevaCurl B’Leave-In product. She uses DevaCurl Supercream and DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel for definition. “But the most important product you can use is a good shampoo and conditioner. For that, I also recommend DevaCurl.

Eye-Opener: The 8 Best Mascaras of 2018

Expectations can run high for a single tube of mascara. Longer. Thicker. Curlier. More lift. No clumping. No flaking. No smudging. If your quest continues for the perfect eyelash-enhancing product, here are eight of the best mascaras of 2018.

Eye-Opener The 8 Best Mascaras of 2018
1. theBalm Mad Lash Mascara

Strap in for an “out-of-this world mascara.” This highly rated product boasts both a “phenomenal formula”, and an “injection-molded wand” that add height and water-resistant, smudge-proof volume to your lashes. Users have a lot of love for this mascara — from calling it “awesome” and their “new favorite”, to the understated “BEST BEST BEST!!!” Bonus: It doubles as a liquid eyeliner. Talc-, paraben-, and cruelty-free.

2. Skin2Spirit Natural Mineral Mascara

If you wear contacts or have an eye condition, this more natural blend may be for you. One user calls it “a truly hypoallergenic mascara.” No more tears or irritated eyes. It promises to condition your lashes, and help them grow longer, stronger, and thicker, with minimal clumping, flaking, and smudging. Also doubles as a liquid eyeliner. Non-toxic. No talc, parabens, mercury, lead, dye, petroleum, or gluten. Cruelty-free. Vegan.

3. Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara

Who doesn’t need a “push-up bra” for their lashes? This self-described “cult classic” is another more natural blend that promises to lengthen, curl, volumize, and condition your lashes, without clumps or flakes. Users consider it “the best mascara on the market,” “lightweight and not gummy,” and one that delivers “super thick lashes.” No talc, parabens, petrochemicals, sulfates, preservatives, oil, dye, fragrance, or gluten. Cruelty-free. Vegan.

4. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

No faking it here. “Mind-blowing lashes, every time!” This formula boasts thicker, conditioned curls that last and last. Another “best mascara on the market” and “the best mascara ever” that delivers “long, lustrous lashes.” Actually, there is some faking: Users have been asked if their lashes are fake, which is a real compliment. No parabens or gluten. Cruelty-free. Vegan.

5. Elizabeth Mott It’s So BIG Volumizing Mascara

Size matters. This formula touts lifted, separated lashes with maximum volume and no smudges. If you have lash extensions, the natural wax formula won’t weigh them down. Users love how this mascara keeps lashes in place despite sweat or tears. They also note its effectiveness and lower cost than other brands. Cruelty-free.

6. Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara

This volumizing, curling, lifting formula and special brush bring out the “lashes you never knew you had.” It’s also long-lasting to the point where it may be a little difficult to remove, says one user, but she can deal with that because it’s the “best mascara.” Another user says she has tried numerous other brands, but this one “blows them all out of the water.”

7. Kiss Me Heroine Make Long and Curl Mascara

If you have stick-straight lashes, this mascara may deliver the long-lasting length and curl you’ve always wanted. Manufactured in Japan, users call it their “favorite mascara” and the “holy grail of mascara.” It’s formulated with camellia oil, argan oil, wild rose oil, Kaninabara fruit oil, royal jelly extract, and chamomile extract for moisturized, protected lashes.

8. Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super Curling & Lifting Mascara Travel Size Mini

This small-sized mascara makes a pretty big claim: You don’t need to use an eyelash curler before applying. “Simply wiggle the wand from base of lashes to tip.” The 12-hour curve-setting formula leaves a satin finish that’s water-resistant. The provitamin B5 and serin also condition your lashes. No raccoon eyes with this brand, says one user. Another user was so pleased after trying the trial size that she moved up to the full size.

The Best Defining Products for Naturally Wavy Hair
The Best Defining Products for Naturally Wavy Hair

Does your wavy hair come in waves? If your hair has a tendency to start out wavy then fall straight, wavy-defining products can give your hair the push and hold it needs to maintain its shape. Here’s a list of five favorite wavy-defining products for naturally wavy hair.

1. Curl Junkie Pattern Pusha

Definition! Volume! Hold! Naturally Curly members give this non-glycerin gel high marks for bringing out the oomph in their curls and waves without the sticky feel, crunch, or flakes. Bring down the frizz while playing up the bounce. For one fine-haired wavy, this slippery gel was thin enough that it didn’t pull the curl out of her hair. Some say a little goes a long way while others apply it more liberally.

2. Kenra Styling Gel #17 (firm hold”>

This alcohol-free styling gel delivers strong support minus the sticky, greasy feel or flakes. Users with both fine and thick curly hair tout its bodybuilding ability and control.

Dries quickly. Clean and lightweight.

3. Deva Curl Ultra Defining Gel

A go-to product for many, this popular ultra-hold moisturizing and defining gel leaves hair soft and shiny. Delivers definition without the crunch. One Naturally Curly member said if she could only use one product for the rest of her life, this would be it. It dissolves instantly when applied to wet hair. Once dry, it forms a moisture-protective cast to enhance curls.

4. Max Green Alchemy Sculpting Gel

A strong curl- and wave-styling product that’s not sticky, greasy, or heavy. Humidity-resistant, it controls frizz and flyaway hair without the buildup. If waves start to droop at end of day, scrunch hair with wet hands to rejuvenate. Plant-based, organic, PVP-, gluten-, and alcohol-free.

5. Bumble and Bumble Bb. Gel

This alcohol-free product is described as a multi-talented sculpting medium that molds firm and shiny shapes. We say it’s a high-hold gel that sculpts and shapes hair. Shiny, radiant finish that’s not sticky to the touch or flaky.

We’re adding a bonus product to the list: Murray’s Superior Hair Dressing Pomade.

InStyle magazine recently named this product as “the secret to Jennifer Aniston’s waves.”  This affordable product was on our radar a few years for “7 Light Hold Pomades For Wavy Hair.”

Sharita of @theloftmedford is another talented curl specialist who knows how to bring the best out in her clients’ curls through the DevaCut, RëZOcut, and more. For Sharita, in addition to transforming hair, she also likes to educate her clients and give them the tools they need to properly care and style their hair in its natural state.

Here are three incredible transformations.

The first two clients were getting ready to head back to school and wanted their curls revived. Sharita gave them her “Curl Refresher,” which includes removing build-up, hydrating the hair with a moisture treatment, and styling their curls with Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic Curl Stimulator.
