Introduce yourself!

I am a Kansas City, Missouri, native who loves Mexican food and reality TV. I’m a Scorpio and my favorite color is purple. I am not a licensed stylist, although most people think I am, and I love all things beauty, but hair care and styling is my passion.

How long have you been natural (brief natural hair journey”>?

I have had natural hair off and on throughout life because I would relax my hair when I wanted a short cut to lie nice and sleek. Whenever I would start to grow it out, I would forego the relaxers and just let my hair do its thing! My last relaxer was in early 2009. I cut some color out of my hair back in 2008 and went for a short, tapered cut. From there, I allowed my hair to grow naturally. I did a few sew-ins in 2010 as a way to keep myself from cutting it again during the growth phase (I realized my patience level for awkward hair growth phases had decreased since I was a teen, lol”>. But once I got to shoulder length, I was good to go! I love my natural texture, especially since there are so many awesome products that make it easier to style…in the 90’s there was nothing for “our” hair, so being natural was hard, and I never stuck with it, until now.

What’s your daily hair routine?

I am a morning workout girl, so if I am have a wash-n-go, I will diffuse my roots dry after my workout then add a bit of Chi Deep Brilliance Reflect, or Agadir Argan Oil Treatment, or Trader Joe’s Jojoba Oil to my ends and fluff. I may use a little KeraCare Edge Tamer if I want super sleek, neat edges, but sometimes I just let them be free. If my hair is straight, I dry the roots with my blow dryer, wrap it tight around my head with a silk scarf, get ready, then unwrap my hair and style. That helps get the roots to stretch and blend into the rest of the hair. When I workout I pull my hair up into a pineapple and secure with a silk scarf (regardless of style”>. I also drink about a gallon of water a day, which I believe helps keep my hair and skin hydrated.

What are your favorite products?

This isn’t a fair question for a product junkie (lol”>, but some of my favorite hair products are Trader Joe’s Nourish Spa Shampoo and Conditioner, ApHogee Restructurizer, Mixed Chicks Leave-In, and Chi Deep Brilliance Reflect. These are products that help my wash-n-go (which happens to be my favorite go-to style”>, be soft, shiny and full of defined, fluffy curls.

What’s your nighttime routine?

If I am in my signature style, a wash-n-go, I pineapple at night with a satin scrunchi and secure my edges with a silk scarf. I also sleep on a satin pillowcase to keep the pineapple hair protected. If I am wearing straight hair, I do a traditional wrap around my head and secure with a silk scarf. And if I am in an updo or bun, I tie a scarf around and cover with a satin bonnet.

How did you get your hair color (if applicable”>, and how do you maintain it?

I have never been a red head before, so I figured I’d try it, and I love it! I used Ion’s Ammonia-Free Demi-permanent in Light Burgundy Blonde with volume 10 developer. Because my natural hair color is a medium brown, higher volume lift and bleach weren’t necessary to achieve this color. Also, I have medium porosity making it easy to absorb chemical and product.  I have not experienced any damage or change in curl pattern. I attribute this to the product being ammonia-free and my hair being healthy prior to dying.

I never recommend that anyone experiment with color if you aren’t sure how those chemicals work. Color is tricky because no two people will get the same results from the same combination of dye and developer. That’s why it is best to let someone knowledgeable about processing advise you or do it for you.

Since my color is not permanent, it fades with washing over time. I expect it to become less vibrant and for the shade to of burgundy to slowly change to a copper red over the course of 8-10 weeks. I actually like this because it feeds my desire for change. As my color adjusts I get new shades of red over the weeks. I just maintain my color by using sulfate-free shampoo and touch it up every few months.

Do you ever get tired of curly hair?

Yes! I like variation in my style; whether it’s clothes, accessories, makeup or hair, I like change and versatility. Sometimes I like my hair defined and curly, sometimes big and frizzy, other times sleek and straight, or sometimes a bold updo or bun. Using the right methods and products allow me to go between all of these.

On your blog and channel you teach women how to care for their natural hair properly. What are some of the most surprising myths or questions you’ve encountered?

I think the ones I encounter the most are all growth related. I noticed that lots of naturals assume trimming their ends and staying in long-term protective styles will make their hair grow, and that’s simply not true! I recently posted about hair care myths on my blog to debunk them with explanations about what’s really responsible for growth versus retaining length.

When did you start vlogging?

September 2013

How did you become a successful vlogger?

Trusting myself and delivering the best content possible are the major things I think helps my blog be helpful to others, which for me, is what makes it a success. Every time someone tells me they see positive changes in their hair, or they achieved a style or straightening they hadn’t before, that makes me happy!

What do you like most about vlogging?

As long as I can remember, family, friends and friends of friends have come to me for hair advice and help. I am also good with coming up with up-do styles that look complicated, but in reality are rather easy to do. I am glad to be able to share some things I’ve learned about hair care and styling over the years!

What do you want to do beyond YouTube and your blog?

Eventually I would like to host events, workshops and seminars on hair care and styling methods. I think hands-on, intimate settings help with understanding and I would like to be able to meet my followers around the world!

Do you have any advice for new natural hair gurus (that you wish someone had told you?”>

Be consistent and don’t let negativity affect how you manage your blog. Some people will always have something to say, but if your readers enjoy what you present and find value in it, you shouldn’t let a few negative people bother you.

Introduce yourself!

We are Beauty Vloggers Kelsey & Kendra Murrell, also known as the “GlamTwinz”. Our YouTube Channel is GlamtTwinz334.

How long have you been natural?

Kelsey & Kendra: We’ve been natural for over 4 1/2 years. We’ve never looked at it as a “Journey”. We just made a conscious decision to stop getting relaxers in 2010 and started the transitioning process. We realized that we didn’t need relaxers at all.  We just wanted our hair to be more healthy. We never took any before and after photos because we didn’t look at it as a “Journey” but as a “New Hair Lifestyle”.

What’s your daily hair routine?

Kelsey & Kendra: We wear our hair curly 6 months out of the year (normally warm/summer months. So it really depends on if we wear it curly or straight because sometimes we do straighten our hair. If it’s curly we generally put it up in a pineapple at night. Apply our favorite Curly product, shake it out in the morning and go! If it’s straight we wrap it at night and comb out/style the next day.

glamtwinz

What are your favorite products?

Kelsey & Kendra: We both really like Curls products. Plus they are a great deal!

What’s your nighttime routine?

Kelsey: Pineapple at night along with a satin bonnet.

Do you ever get tired of curly hair?

Kendra: Yes, I really like versatility and I feel that women of color can do this.  Since we are more educated regarding our natural hair, many of us now realize that we can have the best of both worlds and wear it curly or straight without relaxing and limited heat.  We just have to know how to properly care for our hair in whatever state it’s in curly or straight!

The YouTube natural hair scene is continuously changing, how do you stay

relevant?

Kelsey & Kendra: Stay true to who we are and continue doing what works best for us! Remember, what got you there is what will keep you there!

glamtwinz curly hair guru

When did you start vlogging?

Kelsey & Kendra: We created a YouTube channel in 2009 but did not apply for/become partners until 2011 after watching other beauty vloggers. We were inspired by them and decided to go it for ourselves!

How did you become successful vloggers?

Kendra: Passion for the beauty industry and consistency!

What do you like most about vlogging?

Kelsey: Being able to give helpful information and making others look and feel beautiful about themselves is very rewarding.

What do you want to do beyond YouTube?

Kelsey & Kendra: We both are graduates from Aveda Institute Atlanta and are licensed “Master Cosmetologists”. We have recently launched our very own on-site hair & makeup business called “Beauty by GlamTwinz”. We work with clients for events such as: weddings, proms, beauty pageants & cheer-leading competitions. Our hope is to continue to grow and expand our YouTube Channel. One day we would also like to expand our business and begin doing hair & makeup for red carpet events!

glamtwinz natural hair Do you have any advice for new natural hair vloggers?

Kelsey: Definitely have a passion for it, otherwise you won’t want to continue it once you’ve started. A lot of people don’t know what they are getting themselves into once they realize what it entails. It’s more than just sitting in front of a camera. Invest in a good camera, and editing software. Do it for yourself. Not a trend. Always be yourself.

Any upcoming projects/events you’d like to tell us about?

Kelsey & Kendra: We’ve got a few things up our sleeve….just keep expecting great things from the GlamTwinz as we continue to strive for greatness!

Ebony Clark Shares Her Hair Length Secrets

ebony clark

Ebony Clark, also known as EClark6, is one of the most inspiring naturalistas on the Net! As a long-time follower and admirer I was super duper excited–giddy, really–to interview her!

Her natural hair journey is definitely a source of inspiration for literally thousands of women and her humble spirit is so welcoming you can’t help but to love her!

Take a look at how personal her hair journey was to her and how important positive energy is to her success.

1. Introduce yourself!
My name is Ebony, and live in Norcross, GA! I’m a writer, an artist, super nerd, chronic researcher, I’m blown away by God’s creations, and I adore animals.
2. How long have you been natural?
When I was a sophomore in college (1998″>, I met a freshmen that had already been wearing her hair natural for about a year. Her strength and pride in her hair lit a flame within me! It made me wonder why I was still getting touch ups! I started to become cognizant of women of other races and the role their hair played in their lives. It made me wonder why black women, in general, were so enslaved by relaxers.
It took me about a year or two to actually cut my hair, but I did it with only 3-4 months of new growth. I LOVED it!…It was that dreaded “in between” phase that brought it all to a halt. It wasn’t long and it wasn’t short and cute anymore, so I relaxed it again. I immediately regretted it!
Fast forward to 2005…There was a shift in my spiritual walk, which made me want to show God how much I appreciated His creation, as is! So, in March 2005, I decided that I wasn’t relaxing my hair anymore. It was apart of my journey to becoming more organic, as a person, overall.
After a year of transitioning, I wore curly styles such as rods, roller sets, twist outs, etc. to keep my hair from breaking and to keep my sanity! With time, it became harder to deal with the two textures, so I knew I couldn’t go longer than a year.
When the time came to cut it, I cried like a baby! I have no idea why because the first time I big chopped, my hair was much shorter and I didn’t shed a tear. That year put me right back at the in between phase that I ran from the first time! Ironic, isn’t it?

ebony clark natural hair vlogger

3. What’s your daily hair routine?
In the morning, I unwrap it, moisturize, and go.
4. What are your favorite products?
5. What’s your nighttime routine?
If I’m wearing a wash n go, I put my hair in a pineapple. If I’m wearing two strand twists, or a protective style, I add moisturizer to my ends and wrap my hair with a satin scarf. With a twist out I moisturize my ends, add jumbo twists, and then wrap.
6. How did you get your hair color and how do you maintain it?
I have a little cosmetology experience, so I added a few highlights around my face. I amp up the hydration! I sit under my steamer every week, instead of every two weeks now. Also I deep condition more often as well.
7. Do you ever get tired of curly hair?
I do get bored with my curls…most of the time! I think it’s just because my hair is longer and heavier now, and my curls don’t fall the same. They’re not as springy as they were when my hair was shorter. That’s why I keep my hair in twists or twist outs, and there’s that once a year period when I flat iron it.

8. On your Instagram you inspire women and teach them to be patient when it comes to hair growth. What are some of your most cherished lessons learned on your hair journey so far?
I’ve learned that no matter what works for someone else, you must learn what works for you and your hair! Patience is the main ingredient in everything.
9. When did you start blogging?
I became involved with social media around 2005 or 2006, I believe. It’s starting to be a blur! LOL! My first experience was having a fotki album!
10. How did you become a successful blogger?
I’ve never thought of myself as a “successful” blogger/vlogger! I especially don’t really think I’m a guru! I’ll just say I try to remain true to myself through and through! Also, I take the time to deposit positivity in others’ lives whenever there’s an opportunity.
11. What do you like most about blogging/vlogging?
I love inspiring people, and helping them along their journeys—whichever journey that may be!

12. What do you want to do beyond YouTube?
I want to be a spokesperson for one of my favorite hair care or skin care brands, write children’s books, and be an inventor of extraordinary things!
13. Do you have any advice for new natural hair bloggers?
When I started blogging/vlogging, I didn’t really have any expectations. It was just an outlet for me, but I also wanted to inspire and encourage others just by being myself.  If I had to give anyone advice I’d say, be yourself, be respectful, and don’t say anything to anyone that you’d be ashamed for your mother to read or watch. Also, please realize that not everyone will be nice, but that doesn’t mean that you have to give them your energy! Most importantly, always strive to be the highest and best version of yourself.
14. Any upcoming projects/events you’d like to tell us about?
I’m re-launching my blog early this year! To receive a notification of when it launches, sign up at www.cultchure.com!

SunKissAlba on What It Takes to Be a Successful YouTuber
SunKissAlba

Alba, better known as SunKissAlba online, is a curly-haired vlogger who started transitioning in 2010. With the help of a webcam, a flawless face, and a yearning for reaching out to the curly community, Alba comes with the gift of Type 3 expertise in both English & Spanish.

NaturallyCurly: Please introduce yourself!

Alba: My name is Alba. I am a Bi-lingual Beauty Vlogger on YouTube under the name “SunKissAlba,”  and for spanish speakers “SunKissAlbaParaTi”.

My channels are all about beauty, style and natural hair. Basically a little bit of everything!
NC: How long have you been natural?

Alba: I have been natural for about 3 years or so. Oct 2010 is when I decided to no longer use heat on my hair, or hair dyes, or chemical based products because I noticed a huge change in my curls after experimenting with a red dye and new straighteners.

As soon as I saw my 3b curls turn wavy on the bottom, I freaked and that was the end of it for me! I realized I had heat damage. Unfortunately it took me seeing the damage to realize what I was doing but I definitely learned from it! Having healthy curls was far more important to me than having straight hair for a few days so I cut of my damage gradually and I have not used heat, hair dyes, or any chemical based products since then!
NC: What’s your current routine?

Alba: I only cleanse and style my hair once or twice a week (average”>.

I either co-wash with my DevaCurl One Condition or use DevaCurl No Poo cleansing cream and follow up with conditioners like DevaCurl One Condition or Giovanni Eco Chic Conditioner. To style right now I’m loving the L.O.C. Method for winter but I usually just apply my SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and seal with aloe vera or jojoba oil on my tips only. I always air dry and my hair stays in perfect frizz free style for about 4-5 days if I want it to. To restyle I simply refresh with spritzing water or a Lavender hair spritzer and air dry.
NC: What are your favorite products?

Alba:  I absolutely LOVE SheaMoisture, DevaCurl and Giovanni Eco Chic hair care lines. Some of my usual favorites are Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing smoothie, Deva Curl One Condition, and Giovanni Eco Chic Conditioners!

NC: What is your nighttime routine?

Alba: For night-time I am all about the Pineapple!

I Pineapple my hair and sleep on a satin pillow case to prevent breakage and frizz. This has worked for me for years! That’s all I do.
MORE: How to Pineapple
NC: Do you ever get tired of your curly hair?

Alba: I never get tired of curly hair, however I do get tired of my basic routine so I like to play around with updos, half up do’s, twist and curl rod sets, big buns etc. Extra big buns are my absolute favorite!

NC: On your blog you feature so many different styles. How do you keep your hairstyles fresh and fashion forward?

Alba: I stick with clean and classic hair styles so I allow my outfits to compliment them.

Because my hair is so classic looking, my outfits can be as loud as I like or as simple as I like.
NC: When did you start vlogging?

A: I started Vlogging in 2010 just as a hobby. I uploaded hauls and tags and simple videos once in a while that were filmed on my webcam or Canon PowerShot camera until about 2011-2012.

Then I began to take it a bit more serious after becoming a bit more experienced with the filming side of it and editing. I took it upon myself to learn to edit and invested in an HD professional camera. I’m still learning and working towards making my videos even better.
NC: What do you like most about vlogging?

Alba: I became a successful beauty blogger by investing much more time into vlogging.

I began to pay attention to my numbers and my audience. Once I understood my audience and my viewership, I then understood what works for me and what doesn’t based on what I know others want to see. How do I know what my audience wants to see? After a video goes up I pay attention to my views. What’s my highest… what is my lowest etc… My highest viewed videos are the ones that include a combination of hairstyles and beauty in one or simple curly routines. I focused on giving my viewers what they showed me they want to see and from there I grew and they grew like a happy family.

SunKissAlba Curly Hair Youtuber

NC: What do you want to do beyond YouTube?

Alba: Beyond YouTube I would love to create my own hair care and cosmetics line that is 100% chemical free, toxic free, and made with organic/plant derived ingredients.

I am extremely passionate about being natural from the inside out and in 2013 my new passion became chemical free makeup with organic ingredients. I already was natural with my hair and the foods I eat so my last step is to convert the cosmetics I use to be as natural as possible as well.
NC: Do you have any advice for new bloggers and vloggers?

Alba: Don’t try to fit in because not fitting in is what will set you apart from the rest and make you noticable in the big sea of YouTubers. There are so many vloggers on YouTube so it’s difficult for newcomers to be noticed.

The best way to set yourself apart is: 1. Be yourself 2. Don’t be afraid to show your personality and a little of your personal life 3. Your personality is what will keep your viewers coming back to watch another video. Remember that without personality your viewers can’t get to know you and be relatable. Just be you.

Francheska of HeyFranHey’s Curly Hair Routine

Francheska of HeyFranHey knows how healthy practices can make a difference in how you look and feel. Her blog highlights awesome health and beauty tips that are always natural and easy to follow. Read on to find out how she’s became such a inspirational success by keeping everything in balance.

1. How long have you been natural?

I’ve never had my hair chemically relaxed, so technically I’ve always been “natural”. I transitioned out of color treated and heat damaged hair around 5 years ago. My hair was super thin, fried and shedding like crazy so I decided to stop straightening it. Then from there I decided to cut my hair into a short bob, gradually cutting the damage that was still left until I had a completely new head of healthy curly hair again. It was hard letting go of the length but it was totally worth it in the long run.

2. What’s your daily hair routine?

I’m super low maintenance so my hair is usually in one long braid that I finger-detangle and moisturize before going to bed.

3. What are your favorite products?

My current staples are the White Camellia Conditioner by Aubrey Organics, the Camille Rose Naturals Algae Deep Conditioner or Anti-Breakage Masque by Shea Moisture. To cleanse I do an apple cider vinegar/water rinse once every 3 weeks. I moisturize my hair with a water-based leave-in like Giovanni, then I add some Organic Styling Creme by MYHoneyChild or the Bee Mine Curly Butter for more definition and hold. Then I seal with Pure Aloe Vera Juice by Aubrey Organics.
[prodmod]

4. What’s your nighttime routine?

I re-apply moisture if my hair is asking for it. Then I just sleep on a satin pillowcase to help retain it.

5. Do you ever get tired of curly hair?

Never! I wore it straight for so many years. I’m head over heels in love with my fuller, more natural look. And the wildness compliments my bohemian style of dress and personality much much better!

6. You speak a lot about a healthy diet and exercise routine on your blog. How are these practices related to natural hair care?

Everything is connected. When I eat well, exercise and use really healthy beauty products, I look and feel so much better as a whole. Your body works at its full potential (which should be everyone’s goal”> when you’re fully catering to it from all the necessary angles. It’s equivalent to putting cheap gas in a car or not oiling it…but keeping it detailed and cleaned from the outside. No matter how nice the exterior is holding up, it’s all going to break down on you at some point.

7. When did you start blogging?

I started heyfranhey.com in January of 2011 and opened the YouTube channel in January of 2012.

8. How did you become a successful blogger?

When I came into the picture, bloggers were mainly focusing on products and techniques for achieving healthy hair. After overcoming a major illness, I decided to speak about beauty from the perspective of health from the inside out. I had healed my body through nutrition, fitness and natural/organic products and wanted to share my knowledge with those willing to listen. I tried my best to make health relatable and super easy to incorporate into everyday life. Aside from speaking from an honest place (which always wins”>, I think the key to being successful is solving a problem. What’s missing? And how can you contribute to that open space?

9. What do you like most about blogging/vlogging?

I’m inspired by the community of creative, hard-working, like-minded individuals I’ve attracted. The forum we’ve created is empowering to watch.

10. What do you want to do beyond YouTube?

I would love to have wellness centers around the world, books on affordable and natural living, an organic beauty line, etc. It’s pretty infinite. I want to do absolutely everything this awesome energy I’m in the middle of asks of me.

11. Do you have any advice for new natural hair bloggers?

It’s cool to have fun but try to have a mission statement at some point. That’s what brings true engagement (with your readers/viewers”> and longevity. Always use platforms you’re blessed with for the greater good. This shouldn’t just be about you. Tapping into that emotional thread that connects all of us beats any fame, check or material possession.

12. Any upcoming projects/events you’d like to tell us about?

I’ll be partnering up with a major multi-national corporation on some cool health, fitness and nutrition projects for all of next year. Coming to a city near you. Stay tuned! And stay healthy!

Nikki Mae Natural Hair

1. How long have you been natural?
I did my big chop back in July 2009 which was around the same time I started blogging at NaturalChica.com and vlogging under the screen name Nikkimae2003 on YouTube.

2. What’s your daily hair routine?

I like to keep my hair “stretched” and moisturized during the week to prevent tangling. I usually style my hair in twistouts or braidouts and at night, I will spray my hair with a light leave-in followed by sealing my hair with a hair butter/cream and banding and/or retwisting my hair to keep it stretched.

3. What are your favorite products?

That’s always a hard question for me! I feel like every year I come across several new brands that become faves. Some of the products that are in heavy rotation for me right now are Alikay Naturals lemongrass leave-in, Alikay Naturals Moisture Rich Hair Parfait, TGIN Moist Collection for Natural Hair, Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twisting Butter, CURLS passionfruit control paste and CURLS curl souffle. For even more of my favorites, you can visit my “Mae’s Faves” page on my site.

4. Do you ever get tired of curly hair?

I can’t say that I have. This is the most fun I’ve ever had with my hair! Now I will say that there have been times when I didn’t feel like putting in the work to do my hair, however, when I started looking at my wash/styling sessions as my own personal spa/ “me” time, I’ve started enjoying the process even more.

5. You constantly encourage, inspire and motivate through your blog and social media. How do you stay so positive and consistent?

Once my platform started growing, I made a promise to myself to always be a source of positivity for my readers/viewers. There is so much negativity around us on a day-to-day basis and I really wanted to strive to provide a positive atmosphere whenever someone is interacting with me on my various social media platforms. When people write to me saying that something I’ve shared has been encouraging or an inspiration to them, I am truly humbled and it encourages me to keep sharing. It’s the online community that helps keep me positive along with my strong support system of my family, my husband, close friends and most importantly, God.

6. When did you start blogging?

I started in the summer of 2009 which was around the time of my big chop. I started blogging late in my transitioning stage and 4 1/2 years later, I’m still enjoying sharing all things natural hair/body care.

Nikki Mae

7. How did you become a successful blogger?

When I started blogging/vlogging, I had absolutely NO idea what I was doing or even the potential opportunities it could bring. I think that’s what really helped me because I was solely focused on sharing my natural hair journey as far as what was working and wasn’t working for me when it came to hair care. I was also fortunate to build friendships with other bloggers that I looked up to and definitely learned from them as I carved out my own path. It’s a continuous learning experience and there are so many great resources online that have helped me along the way as well.

8. What do you like most about blogging/vlogging?

I love the FREEDOM! It’s an amazing feeling to be able to share your thoughts and experiences with basically the world! I also love the continuously growing network of people I’ve been able to come in contact with over the years. I know I’ve grown in so many areas because of the diverse group of people that the world of blogging has brought to me.

9. What do you want to do beyond YouTube?

Right now I’m really focused on completing my Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering. That is my priority número uno right now, but I’m looking forward to doing some more traveling to host events in the U.S. and abroad centered on natural beauty/healthy living next year. I had an amazing opportunity to host an event in Trinidad this year for natural hair care and it really gave me the desire to travel more and interact on a one-on-one basis. Writing posts and uploading vids is great but I personally love being able to talk to people face-to-face.

10. Do you have any advice for new natural hair bloggers?

As a new blogger, I would encourage you to stay true to your own unique voice. Don’t get bogged down with keeping track of how many “followers” you have but focus on sharing what you’re passionate about. There are many bloggers out there, but what will make you stand out is being the wonderful YOU that you are : “> There is room for everyone to have their voice heard.

11. Any upcoming projects/events you’d like to tell us about?

A few months ago, I reopened my site for Natural Chica shirts. I was fortunate to have worked with Andrea Pippins of Fly this year for an official logo design for the Natural Chica brand and I was too excited to be able to put them on shirts this year! You can check them out at http://naturalchica.bigcartel.com. Also, if you’re in Atlanta, you’re welcome to join me and Camille Rose Naturals for her Winter White Soiree. Introduce yourself!

Hey guys! My name is Chary-Jay and I have a natural hair and beauty channel on YouTube.
In December I’ll be re-launching my blog, Chary-Jay.com to showcase new beauty, fashion and lifestyle related content so my readers can get a closer look into my world.
They’ll be able to come along with me as I launch a new business venture (Big Bold and Funky”> and stay up to date with me in-between my video posts on YouTube.

How long have you been natural?

I went natural in 2009. I transitioned for one year before doing the big chop in 2010.

What’s your daily hair routine?

Daily? Hmm, I don’t really have one etched in stone. What I do to my hair daily depends on the style of my hair.
Usually during the week I’ll rock a twist-out. Once I wake up, I fluff, add some oil for shine and voila, I’m done!

What are your favorite products?

How long can this list be? LOL! Ok, I’ll name what I’m currently loving at this time or else you’ll be reading forever.
Right now I am consistently being mesmerized by the results of the Aloe-Berry Styling Gel by Alikay Naturals. No matter what style I do, my hair comes out marvelous!
An oldie, but goodie that never lets me down is the Moringa Tree Conditioning Ghee by Qhemet Biologics. I can use this as a leave-in conditioner, heat protectant or just as a moisturizer and my hair just soaks this stuff up. It’s amazing!

What’s your nighttime routine?

I don’t have one. I’m probably the laziest natural because I don’t have time (or the desire”> to re-twist my hair at night and pineappling my hair doesn’t work. It just stretches my definition in the back of my hair causing me to have undefined curls in the back of my head while curls are poppin’ everywhere else. No bueno.

How did you get your hair color, how do you maintain it?

I got my color professionally done because while I like to experiment with different styles, I don’t mess with the chemicals. I leave that to the professionals!
I’ve worked far too hard on caring for my hair just to do some horrid D.I.Y. color job and have it all fall out. After I got it done at the salon, I paid extra attention to my hair and kept it moisturized with extra deep conditioning sessions and checking the moisture levels daily.
I became great friends with a water based moisturizer soon after I got color.

Do you ever get tired of curly hair?

Sometimes I get annoyed with the amount of time it takes to do my hair. But if I don’t do it, I have to either wear a puff (which can cause stress to my edges, and I’d love to keep mine, praise Jesus!”>, or looking like raggedy-Ann.
But I’d never get tired of curly hair enough to actually go back to the creamy-crack. Curly hair is so much better than straight hair any day–my opinion only. Don’t come for me!

When did you start vlogging?

During my transitioning days in 2009.

How did you become a successful vlogger?

This is a tricky question because everyone’s definition of success is different.
I’ll answer the question like this: I think I became somewhat popular because of my protective hairstyles. In a time when a lot of people I was watching on YouTube were fixated on having the perfect curls (and I only had kinks”>, I decided to play around with different updos and people starting liking them.
It was great because it forced me to challenge my creativity. It was and still is a lot of fun.

What do you like most about vlogging?

The interaction. I communicate with people all over the world. It’s insane! Something that started out just about hair has led me to make new friends in different cities, states and even countries. I also get to travel a lot which is really the icing on this delicious, multi-tiered cake.

What do you want to do beyond YouTube?

Next month I’m launching my new tee and hair accessory line called Big Bold and Funky.
For so long I wanted to create this brand that would give fun options when it came to hair accessories. I thought a lot of what was sold in the store was either too small for my big head of hair or too plain and blah for my personal style.
I created this line for girls like me who wanted a statement piece to rock in their hair or a funky tee to complete an already bold look. I’m excited to launch this line and see where Big, Bold and Funky takes me!

Do you have any advice for new natural hair vloggers?

Don’t let the negative comments get to you!
When your audience grows, all the sweet and positive comments start to get over shadowed by a few trolls and you may feel the need to respond to defend yourself. One or two responses are fine, but not when it becomes a back and forth battle. Especially if someone is being disrespectful towards you or making comments unrelated to the video or blog post at hand.
A good blogger friend once told me to “block and delete” when it came to those comments that aren’t providing constructive criticism, but just being hateful.
Just focus your attention to the positive viewers/readers because that’s the audience that truly matters.
Jouelzy: Natural Hair Guru

If you’re an avid watcher of YouTube and have sought tips on caring for Type 4 hair, chances are Jouelzy has popped up in your search results. If not, read up: she offers advice to people with particularly coarse and coily hair. Not to mention her bubbly yet straight-to-the-point personality jumps out of her videos and can’t be easily ignored.

1. How long have you been natural?

I don’t really have a ‘natural hair journey’. I have hair that grows out of my head, I like to style it and also like it to be as healthy as possible. So I do things to keep it cute and healthy. I’ve shaved my head several times — but it’s about 5 years since the last complete shave.

2. What’s your daily hair routine?

Put a wig on. In all seriousness, during the winter time I wear a lot of wigs as ‘protective styling’ because I can’t deal with the cold air and it zapping all the precious moisture from my hair. Daily routine is highly dependent on the hair style that I wear and I try to avoid having to put my hands in my hair daily.

3. What are your favorite products?

I love Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave-In Conditioner as a conditioner and My HoneyChild Type 4 Hair Creme as a moisturizer. More of my faves can be found in My Favorite Product series on YouTube.

4. What’s your nighttime routine?

Put a satin cap on and go to sleep. If my hair needs to be reset I’ll do that but that is usually chunky twists or chunky bantu knots.

 5. How did you get your hair color, and how do you maintain it?

I henna my hair black, but that’s more for health and shine.

6. How do you maintain your hair in the winter vs. the warmer months?

Wear a wig. Deep condition, twice a month.

7. Do you ever get tired of curly hair?

I don’t have curly hair to begin with, so to tire of it…I don’t have that option.

8. When did you start blogging?

I’ve had several blogs over the years. I use to run some blogs for big music artists, so this was a no brainer. I actually started because I wanted free weave and to try some virgin hair that everyone was raving about but I refused to pay the insane amount for.

9. How did you become a successful blogger?

By just being me and being true to me. I think people respond to genuineness. Not everyone is going to like you but I prefer to have a smaller fan base that likes me as me, rather than pandering to folk as someone I am not. So I just stuck to being me and I provide quality information that wasn’t being offered to an overlooked sector of natural hair.

10. What do you like most about blogging/vlogging?

I like inspiring others in a positive light. I got an email last week about an at home nurse who is able to style her wheel chair bound patient’s hair and make her feel better about herself. They watch my videos together and decide on what styles to try. You never imagine the reach you have when you do these videos. So things like that is what I appreciate the most.

11. What do you want to do beyond YouTube?

Live free and prosper.

12. Do you have any advice for new natural hair bloggers?

Google is your best friend. And I’m not just talking about the search feature.

5 Timesaving Tips for College Curlies

Hey College Curlies! Feeling a little lost when it comes to caring for your hair now that you’ve moved out? Here are some simple tips you can try to find your curly way amongst your new world away from home. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to being the campus Curly Ambassador.

1. Pick a Wash Day

Depending on your school schedule, pick a day you don’t have much to do. Going longer than a week to wash your hair is a no-no. You don’t want to cause tangles and breakage or even matting (locing”> by avoiding your wash day. Managing your time to care for yourself is crucial to your health and beauty! If you have classes everyday of the week, pick Saturday as your wash day and use Sunday to style your hair.

2. Keep it Healthy

Outside of keeping up a healthy balanced diet, make sure to deep condition on at LEAST one of your wash days per month. If time permits deep condition on a wash day basis. One way to deep condition on-the-go is to put a plastic cap over your deep conditioning tresses, and then a beret type hat over that. It’s a clever disguise that keeps those curls looking great! Hot oil treatments are essential as well. Massage oil onto your scalp with your favorite oil to relieve the stress from that last mid-term.

3. Stretch & Go

Similar to the wash a go The Stretch & Go can be a lifesaver for those of you with a busy college schedule. Wash and style your hair on the weekend. 4 plait-braid outs, twist outs and high buns are great ways to stretch curly/coily hair. Once your hair is stretched you’ll avoid tangles and prevent long detangling sessions on wash day. Plus, you can style you hair each morning in a different way! Just braid, plait or twist the night before while your watching TV. In the morning take it out and go!

4. Be a Fly College Curly

Just because time is hard to come by, doesn’t mean you have to be boring when it comes to styling your hair. In college I was famous for using each day to get through my weekly regimen. For example, Sunday would be my wash day. After putting in some leave-in conditioner and sealing with an oil I bunned it up for the night (it’s easy to bun your hair while damp”>. Monday I would rock a cute, huge bun while my hair continued to air dry.  Monday night I would braid my hair into 4 plaits and rock the deep wavy look out or in a pony-tail all day Tuesday & Wednesday. Wednesday night I’d try smaller braids to rock all day Thursday. Friday would be the wildcard! My hair was fully stretched by then and I could style it into a fierce updo or leave it wavy for the weekend festivities!

5. Sharing is Caring?

If your’e sharing you’re living space in the dorms or an on-campus apartment certain etiquette should be practiced. If you know for the next 2 hours you’ll be taking up the shower for your next detangling and washing session, be mindful of your roommates schedule. The same goes for product sharing and organization. There’s nothing worse than grabbing for your favorite leave-in after rinsing out your deep conditioner and finding it empty or not where you left it last! *cue the horror music* Communicate! You’ll often find that with communication your new living arrangement is more fun than an headache.
Of course college curlies can wash and go too! Check out this Day to Day Curly Routine video, where I walk through how little time and effort it takes to maintain a big fluffy wash and go over 5-6 days!

Glam Old Hollywood Curls Tutorial | Type 3

This summer 1920s-inspired looks are making waves from the big screen to the red carpet. Your curly coils can embrace the Old Hollywood trend with this super easy, Gatsby-inspired tuck ‘n roll.

  • Step 1 Start by lightly misting the hair on the side you’ll be rolling with water to make the hair more pliable and slightly part your hair with more hair one side than the other. You can do this style on a slightly old (stretched”> wash n go, braid out or twist out.
  • Step 2 Apply a little gel to help with fly-aways on the side you’ll be rolling. I used Olive Oil Eco-Styler gel and brushed my edges up with a soft bristle brush.
  • Step 3 Start to tuck and roll tightly from the top, down and to the back. Use some extra gel to smooth the rolls if need be.
  • Step 4 Hold your tucked roll at the back of your head. If you rolled the left side like me, the end of your roll should end on the right side of your neck. Grab some bobby pins! Pin your roll in crisscrosses to secure the roll. Use as many as you need, I used 5 in the back and a few more down the side and top of my roll.
All done! This look can be worn casually to the beach or a summer picnic or to a chic classy red carpet affair. You can watch the full tutorial in action below.
How to Pineapple Coily Hair

What is a pineapple?

Pineappling was developed by our very own NaturallyCurly community members and is a go-to method for curlies of all curl patterns. The technique keeps curls on top of the head while you sleep to prevent flat, smashed curls and gives curls life and bounce between wash days.

For kinky, coily girls this is a great way to stretch your coils too, depending on the length of your hair. Keep reading for a step-by-step guide to pineapple coily hair.

Step 1

Use a moderately loose scrunchie to put your hair into a hair ponytail.

Step 2

If you have shorter or more coily hair, use two or three scrunchies to make a few high ponytails. The key is to keep the hair from the back and sides of your head while sleeping.

Step 3 (optional”>

Use a  satin scarf to wrap around your pineappled hair. You can also skip this is if you sleep on a satin pillowcase.

Finished!

This technique will keep your curls from being completely flattened in the morning. Just take the high ponytail (pineapple”> in the morning and fluff!

Many kinky , coily, curly girls pineapple to keep their hair stretched, combating shrinkage. Adding the pineapple technique to your regimen will protect your curls and give you great looking hair between wash days!

Day by Day Curly Hair Routine

How often do you wash your hair? How do you make a wash n go last a week?

I frequently get these types of questions in the comment section of my videos as well as in person. If you’re a BUSY curly girl like me it’s not ideal to spend hours multiple times a week to maintain a hairstyle. On average I wash n go once every five to seven days. The process takes about 1-2 hours depending on if it’s time to deep condition and a little more if I diffuse instead of air dry. Take a look at my process from start to finish!

Time to Let Go of Your Hair

The majority of the questions and inquiries I receive on my YouTube channel, email and blog have a common theme. Heat damage. More specifically, inquiring minds want to know if there is hope after heat damage and if so, how to get their curls back. My answers are always personal, because cutting your damage is more than likely a personal decision. There are however, some very tell-tell signs for when it’s really time to let go.

Runway Tutorial for Coily Hair

The Badgley Mischka hair created by Moroccanoil this season featured curls sitting atop a unique, playful reverse-braid that tightly followed the shape of the head. The unique effect was created by braiding hair from bottom to top instead of the usual top to bottom technique. Though superbly classic, the style has an edgy, modern sensibility that can be easily recreated at home!

Scrunch Out the Crunch

Using a gel or strong hold product to define your curls? You are more than likely to experience “crunchy” hair if so. Crunchy hair is stiff and lifeless and not exactly what we envision when it we style our hair. Here are some tips on how you can “scrunch out the crunch” or SOTC, giving you defined curls that move!
