As a child, I remember getting my hair done and being super nervous to attend P.E. class the next day because I was fearful of how the sweat would potentially ruin my hair. Now, as I watch women play in the WNBA with their natural tresses, I become convinced that they must be fairies because how else are you maintaining your hair in the midst of sweating on the court?
If you’re anything like me, you’re eager to read this article because we must know how these women are preserving their hair while looking good playing this high-impact sport.
1). Kysre Gondrezick
We admire how dedicated Kysre is to her silk-pressed hair. When she is not rocking a Lori Harvey-esque silk press, she can be seen with a sleek bun. Not only is she the highest-drafted player in the women’s league, but she is also clean and looks like she struts on the Chicago Sky basketball court. To maintain a silk press without sweating it out, we recommend the hydra ionic silk press method, which is offered at most salon services.
Unlike other presses, this method uses hydration therapy and steam, swelling the hair molecules full of hydration to where the hair has less space to attain any more moisture or humidity. This method allows your hair to stay straight longer while fighting frizz. We advise this technique if you want to rock a silk press without sweating it immediately.
Try Moroccanoil Intense Smoothing Frizz Control Serum for extra humidity coverage.
2). Angel Reese
Another Chicago Sky baddie, Angel Reese, is “that girl,” and her hair is always laid. Angel is a classic so it is no surprise that her hair reflects this. The middle-part sew-in is her signature look, and if she happens to be on the court, she will likely protect her edges with a Jordan headband.
Angel is often seen rocking a low pony with a band preventing a sweat-out around her edges. If you are a gym bae or super active girly looking for a low-maintenance style, we recommend a traditional sew-in with minimal leave-out.
3). Brittney Griner
Experiencing Britney’s hair evolution has been such a sweet moment. From healthy locs to healthy fro, her hair has to be one of the prettiest crowns. Coming out of a 10-month detainment, Brittney is full of liberation, and her curls represent her freedom.
Brittney’s light and fluffy curls loosely span the crown of her head. This style has just enough product for coil definition but nothing too saturated to weigh her curls down. Looking for a similar effect?
Try CURLSMITH – Weightless Air Dry Cream for a lightweight finish.
4). Aliyah Boston
Last season, Aliyah was commended on being “rookie of the year” for the WNBA, maintaining great defense and even better hair. Aliyah is full of color. We see her hair and feel secondhand joy. Her hair was booming with personality and flair, and she was always excited to see which color she’d try next. Aliyah is always bold with the colors and extra with the length. Her braids meet her thigh and are tailed with loose hot-water curls.
Feeling colorful, try Liang Dian’s Pre-Stretched Braiding Hair.
5). Jonquel Jones
Not only is she a WNBA All-star, but Jones is also making strides to be ahead of her game while being one of the best players New York Liberty has ever seen. Her locs are thick, lengthy, and healthy; you can tell Jonquel maintains her mane like she does her game. Her hair is highlighted impressively with brown hues of brown.
Without damage in sight, we advise Adore Semi Permanent Hair Color for the best color outcome.
I have never seen so much diversity in the WNBA, from color to length and style. This generation is risk-taking and their hair is confirmation of that. The younger version of me is impressed with how well these women protect their hair in a way that is unique and special to them.

When I think of Willow Smith’s hair evolution, a dose of nostalgia creeps through my veins like a sedative. All I can hear is the preteen in me singing, “I whip my hair back and forth,” and now Willow is whipping into a new era.
From braids to buzz cuts, Willow makes it look effortless and we’ll be giving you inspo so that you can too.
1). Partially Shaved Bob
Image Source: Photo by Simon James/FilmMagic & Danielle Venturelli
Maybe we threw it back a little too far but we couldn’t resist. We couldn’t possibly curate this article on Willow and not add an honorable mention to her pre-teen era. She was an early icon and you could tell by her bold hair choices that she was star-studded. The half-shaved head was a vibe that you didn’t see much on young girls however, Willow made everything appropriate.
2). 21st Century Girl
Image Source: Jeff Schear & Jason Merritt/Getty Images
This era marked the beginning of her ethereal journey. Her braids and intergalactic style approach tell you she was ahead of her time. We love the almost hidden hues of color throughout her braids. To accomplish this, we advise you to invest in colored braiding hair.
3). Pink Buzz Cut
This photo screams nostalgia. The neon colors are so 2010s and yet, Willow makes it timeless. Her colors and accessories make you forget she’s practically bare-faced because her fashions consume all the attention.
4). Summer Fling
This look is very Coachella-esque. Both the boohoo and colorful aesthetic put this look in a festival category. We love how faint the colors are on this do’ it’s almost as if they’re not there at all. Another subtle detail wins!
5). Bob & Bang
We hope you didn’t confuse this style with your typical bob. These slight asymmetrical bangs demand a double take. Subtle and precise is a contrast that Willow aces.
6). Loc Tails
We love how these locs are freestyled. She parted them in four, and they are gravity-defying every which way. The red lipstick and hair ties complement this outfit very well.
7). Badu Wrap
The head wrap perfectly matches the singer’s natural and free aesthetic. Channeling her inner Badu, Willow is a force in her earthly realm.
8). Extended Pony
Willow is the moment in any room, we’re convinced. This high pony is all the rave, featuring her thick locs. Instead of using a regular/thin holder, Willow has her locs supported with a thick sequin band, giving her ponytail height.
9). High Fashion Buzz Cut
I mean, who else do you know who can rock a freshly shaved head with a precise cat eye? An artist who not only creates art but also walks the art themselves is precious, and Willow fits the description.
10). Bouncy Coils
Image Source: Jerritt Clark/Getty Images for Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 2 Presented by Amazon Prime Video
We don’t know if we’re more stunned over these healthy coils or the makeup. How can you ever go poor when your face card is fully funded like this?
11). Abstract Locs
We wouldn’t judge you if you considered hanging this portrait in your home as art because we’re considering it, too. Abstract locs are the perfect feature for Willow. This style would be perfect for a festival or any art-centered occasion, even for a photo shoot.
12). 90s Babe
The bob and the makeup remind us so much of Jada Pinkett Smith in “Set It Off” circa 99’. This lipstick color has 90s written all over it.
13). Intergalactic Rockstar
Willow is out of this world, resembling a cosmic rockstar. Her Fulani braids are styled uniquely with these fun hoops attached to her braids. For cool hair accessories, check out these hair accessory hoops via Amazon.
14). 2 For Fun
All the drama and then some is exactly what Willow is serving. We love how she has wrapped her box braids into two middle-part buns, giving this look an extra edge in her signature.
15). 50 Shades Of Willow
Her brown fro matches her eyes so well in this brown ensemble. This soft look on Willow is one of our favorites because no one does naturally better than she can.
This summer, we challenge you to be bold and creative like Willow. Try that style or color that you’ve been thinking about. If you are thinking about going short or even bald, do it? If you’re thinking about braids or starting locs, try using The Braid, Loc, and Twist Gel from African Pride. These trusted products make us feel better about being creative.
Read 15 Ways to Wear Fulani Braids for more hair confidence and bold ideas.
Fulani braids are the new “it girl” of braids for this summer. This style is for all the creative girlies who want to display artistry and flexibility. Given that this style is mostly by using the braid back method, it takes shorter than box braids or traditional braids because we know you’re trying to be on the move this summer, and you’re not trying to be in the chair all day.
Although the Fulani braids are best known for including unique designs, these braids have origins dating back to West Africa in the 1500s. This means this braiding technique constantly evolves, reminding us of its popularity.
We have snagged a few of our favorite Fulani styles so you can recreate your own “it girl” moment this summer.
1). Carnival Fulani
Carnival celebrates fertility and the transition from darkness to light as the first spring festival of the new year. This style pairs perfectly with carnival attire or carnival-themed parties, leaving just enough space for an extravagant headpiece to sit on top.
2). Fulani Heart Throb
The heart design in these braids is neatly done and truly reflects the art of braiding. We love the attentive skill that goes into the Fulani braiding design, it’s what sets this style apart from all the other braiding styles.
3). Long Hair, Watch Em’ Stare
These Fulani braids are elongated and surpass knee length. This length is for all the ladies that are going for drama and body. The baby hairs on this style are another eye-popping moment for this memorable style.
4). Fulani But Make It Juneteenth
Juneteenth is right around the corner. What better way to commemorate the holiday than with this cultural-esque style? Although the Fulani method is full of history, the beads and accessories on these braids make it a perfect look for any cookout or celebratory function. What better way to honor freedom than with a style that is saturated in expression?
Shop Amazon for these cool hair statement accessories.
5). Catch You On The Flip
The Fulani braids that include hybrid styling are truly a chef’s kiss for all of my indecisive babes. We know how stressful it can be when our stylists ask us, “Side part or middle part?” However, this hybrid flip allows you the luxury and peace of being indecisive. Save yourself the contemplation, ladies. Next time they ask, just say you want both.
6). Fulani With A Twist
We’ve reserved this style for you if you’re allergic to the status quo. Diverging from the traditional Fulani braiding method, this style gives you the best of both worlds. We love how the top of the head starts with the typical Fulani braid backs, but towards the back, we are surprised by a plot twist of twists instead of braids. Down to the color, this look is the opposite of average.
7). Fulani Top Bun
Did we mention how flexible the Fulani braiding style was, right? Well, this look is proof of range. We love how this technique was tailored to feature hot water rod curls. The curls at the ends of the braids were achieved by hot water dipping. The braided curly bangs are an additional detail that sets this design apart. These defined curls hanging from the top bun of this half-up, half-down style make us want to book an appointment immediately.
8). Human Hair = Extra Flair
The Fulani braiding method, featuring loose curly extensions, is the dynamic duo we never knew we were missing. These extra curls towards the back give volume to traditional Fulani braids.
9). Fulani Bob
Just when you think you’ve seen them all, you realize this thread could be endless because there’s so much versatility in store. Yes, there’s something for everyone, including my ladies who don’t want extra hair on them during the summer but still want Fulani braids. If this is you, the Fulani bob is your go-to for this summer. This style gives you all the perks of traditional Fulani braids but with half the hair.
10). Bantu & Faux-lani
This style puts such a spin on traditional Fulani braids that we might just be dizzy. Not only are the Fulani braid backs Bantu knotted at the top, but the hair in the back is color faux locs mixed with curly strands. This look is stunning and unique if you want to take the Fulani technique to another level.
11). What’s The Stitch?
The stitch braiding method on these Fulani braids gives the style a different magnitude of sleekness. The stitching of these braids is so neat and clean that they are flawless.
12). A-Maze- ing
The design on these braids is so intricate, that you’d think you were staring at a maze. Every loop and part reminds us that this might be the most creative braiding style.
13). Thick Braiding
This half-down pony reminds us that Fulani braids don’t have to be super small to maintain the aesthetic. These braids are thick and bountiful, akin to a full-top pony.
14). Peek-A-Boo Color
Another level of creativity has been unlocked. These braids being half back and half pink put a cool spin on the traditional style.
15). Goldie Locs
Maintaining the traditional braids towards the front with the remaining blonde braids sitting pretty towards the back is the perfect compliment to her skin tone. This look is proof that less is more.

As I approached the room, the scent of black girl magic hit my nose like a breeze coming through a cracked window. I immediately got flashbacks from childhood, holding my ear down for my mother to press my roots and bump my ends. The scenery felt nostalgic, like a stroll down memory lane. Who would’ve thought that hair would be a major part of my life? Natural hair is an experience that brings women together like a reunion, as it is a bond we share.
The World Natural Hair Show was just the reunion I needed. Hosted in Atlanta, GA, by Taliah Waajid, the show serves as a cultural movement for all women. Black-owned brands gathered to promote their products, and stylists promoted their work.
Walking into the event felt like entering a celebration filled with black trailblazers who are founders, CEOs, entrepreneurs, journalists, creatives, and women working their fingers in beautiful patterns to present the best braids and styles you’ve ever seen. As the room lit up with creativity and expression, The Natural World Hair Show was like heaven for those passionate about style and the evolution of healthy hair.
In case you missed it, we’ve snagged some of our favorite moments in this thread.
Colorful Strands
Seeing black women rock colorful hues grabs my attention immediately, as they are a perfect complement to our warm skin tone. During the hair show, I saw so many bold colors, both protective styles and dyed ones.
Braids
Braids are one of our favorite protective styles because they are unlimited in terms of creativity. During the hair show, we encountered various zig-zags, crisscrosses, and cornrows. Keep scrolling for braid inspo.
Locs
The loc community was live and present at the natural hair show. We witnessed almost every style imaginable and even got to pop in at some styling stations to watch how some of these looks were created.
All photos were taken and submitted by @NICEDIDIT and @ZIGLORPHOTOS for NaturallyCurly.
There’s nothing sweeter than nurturing your hair and watching it flourish like the plant it is. Whether your hair is naturally locked or purposefully styled, the process of individual strands coming together to form beautiful locs is truly a sight to behold.
Dating back to 3000 BC, locs have held different meanings in different cultures. Sometimes, they symbolize unity, while at other times, they represent rebellion. Locs started as a statement but became a trend when legends like Bob Marley popularized the Rasta aesthetic. Today, locs are more popular than ever before. They can be low-maintenance and protective when cared for properly.
We’re excited to share some of our favorite loc styles with you and offer tips on maintaining healthy locs.
1). Starter Locs
Starter locs are the leap of faith at the beginning stages of locs. It can take natural strands between 6 months to two years to conform into locs. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to have short hair to begin this process. You can start at whatever length. Beginner locs are usually introduced using the comb coil method.
This method requires neat parting of the hair. You will section the ends of your moisturized hair between the teeth of the comb. From this step, you will twist the comb from the root to the tip and repeat this step throughout each part of the head.

2). Traditional Locs
These locs are the most common. Traditional locs are also easily manipulated for curly styles similar to the featured photo. Retwisting these locs requires new growth to be combed from the root and then hand-twisted to conform to the rest of the loc.

Jamaican Mango & Lime Locking Firm Wax-Resistant Formula provides a soft and gentle hold without leaving greasy residue for hard-to-hold-loc hair.
3). Sisterlocs
Sisterlocs take the longest to complete, requiring concise weaving with a latch hook tool similar to a crochet needle. Due to the intricacy of this style, this is no DIY project.
We advise you to consult a certified technician regarding this method first. Preparing these locs is worth it, as they deliver beautiful results. This technique is flexible and looks great when curled.

4). Faux Locs
This style is for my ladies who love how locs appear but are not ready to commit to or transition their natural hair. It consists of braiding your natural hair with synthetic braiding hair for a thick foundation. You then take faux loc hair and wrap it downward around the braid.
Faux locs give you the aesthetic of having locs without having them, and some women use them to begin starter locs. With new growth, they proceed to re-wrap around the loc using the retwist method.

5). Wick Locs
Originally a Florida fashion worn by Afro-Carribeans, wicks are becoming more popular. Wicks are locs that transform into fewer and bigger individual locs. One can accomplish this style by making wider parts start locs or combining parts for locs already started by having them retwisted together as one.

Although this style is low-maintenance, the thickness of each wick can make it difficult to penetrate. Loc Oil For Dreads is perfect for stimulating healthy roots and penetrating thick strands with natural ingredients to help with growth and reduce itching.
6). Freeform Locs
Freeform locs are one of our favorite loc types because they have no method. They naturally grow your hair’s way without manipulation. It is beautiful to see how hair forms without styling; it’s a new personality.

As freeing as this style may seem, it is important to keep the roots fresh. Design Essentials Scalp & Skin Care Detoxifying Tonic with Eucalyptus & Lemon is perfect for cleansing, removing skin irritation, and removing product build-up.
7). Barrel Twist
Another unique locs styling is barrel twist, which involves twisting locs in an under-and-over method. To achieve this look, you’ll twist two locs tightly together from root to tip until the entire head is covered in twisted locs. Many beauticians hold pieces using pins or clips while attending to other parts to prevent unraveling.

Product Recommendations:
Tightly twisted locs are a necessity for this style. Shop Cantu Moisturizing Twist & Lock Gel to keep those locs nice and tight.
8). Lobster Braids
Lobster braids follow a similar approach to barrel twisting with the under-and-over method. However, most lobster braids are braided downwards in a cornrow style. You will start at the top and pull in each loc over and under until locs form a bigger braid shaped like a lobster. This style requires precision.

You can use these duckbill clips to help section and keep your hair in place.
9). Petal Buns
Petal buns blossom with creativity while giving traditional locs a floral spin. This style usually begins with the ponytail base. Then, you fold over the locs from the ponytail and tie them individually with a small rubber band or small tie. You do this throughout each ponytail and fan out each folded loop for a flower-like finish.

10). The Mohawk

Another cool style is the loc mohawk. This particular look consists of two individual locs twisted together and then curled at the ends. These curls are then pinned into a mohawk style from the front to the back of the head.

Picture it: It’s the night of the Super Bowl, and Beyoncé drops two major singles from what would become her album, Cowboy Carter. You, anticipating a country album and tour, are clueless about all things country culture, from fashion to the latest country hits. You begin to feel left out, but remember that articles like this are your friends for a reason.
If Beyoncé is your first real introduction to country culture and music, don’t be ashamed. NC has you covered country music’s fashion, music, and culture, starting with a few artists we think you should know. Before we transform you into the ultimate cowgirl, here are a few things to note.
The country girl aesthetic is more than the cowgirl hat and rattlesnake boots. Cowgirl culture represents independence and adventure. It represents women carving out their legacy despite the agenda for the advancement of men. Think of small-town girls making great strides like Beyoncé breaking barriers in the country music genre.
If this sounds like you, we’ve outlined a quick rundown of some of the most iconic black artists at the forefront of the country genre. We’ve also featured some cool hair and fashion inspo sending you to those upcoming concerts in style.
Saddle up as we prepare you for black excellence.
1. Tanner Addell
Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images for BRELAND & Friends
Signed to Columbia Records in 2021, Tanner is mesmerizing with her unique voice and diverse sound as a self-taught instrumentalist. Embodying her Buckle Bunny persona, Tanner performs wearing a traditional black cowgirl hat. The cowgirl hat is a fashion trend that originated from women who worked on ranches in the Western Frontier. What was once used as protection and blockage from the sun is now worn to represent freedom and strength. Her hair is blonde and braided with a cute pink bow at the tail. She aces the theme of freedom with loose strands hanging past her modelesque neck.
2. Brittney Spencer
Photo by Paul Morigi/Getty Images for CARE
Brittney’s feature on Cowboy Carter is a no-brainer, as her voice compliments the genre so angelically. She shines effortlessly wearing a half-up, half-down pony featuring big curls falling down her back and gracing her forehead into a bang. As a Maryland native, Brittney is flaunting her big vocals to compliment her big hair. Big hair became a big trend during the hairspray era in the 80s, and artists like Reba McEntire redefined “big” in the hairstyles we see today.
3. K. Michelle
Originally introduced as an R&B artist, K. Michelle trotted onto the country genre effortlessly, as if this lane was curated just for her. The saying “The bigger the hair, the closer to God” places K. Michelle in the clouds as she takes us back to the 80s era of country music with this up-do. Her big and full high ponytail gives Dolly Parton the fullness and boldness of this extravagant style.
4. Linda Martell
Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images
The term “icon” is not used loosely, considering the major contributions of Linda Martell. She is the first black female artist to become a successful commercial country artist. Also featured on Cowboy Carter, Linda is captured rocking bangs hooded under a swoop that swoons into the perfect croissant bun.
This style is a cultural stamp amongst black women, yet Linda scores this look as if she invented the style herself. Looking closely, you will notice Linda wearing “bandana” styled patterns on her top. This style is a popular trend in cowgirl/cowboy culture today.
5. O.N.E The Duo
This duo is one of one, debuting the first black country mom-and-daughter duo. Prana Supreme, the daughter of Rza from the iconic hip-hop group The Wu-Tang Clan, was raised with music as her origin story. The two combined their passions and made history. Tekitha (mom) was spotted wearing a high faux loc pony with Western Turquoise beads mixed between locs. The Western Turquoise Stone represents Navajo tradition, marking prosperity. Prana Supreme Diggs (daughter) is captured sporting full teased tresses.
6. Reyna Roberts

She hit the ground running as a sensation after a clip of her covering Carrie Underwood’s “Drinking Alone” went viral. Reyna Roberts is recognized for her amazing pen as a songwriter and songstress. Pictured at the 57th Country Music Awards, her red hair ablaze under a black wide-brimmed cowgirl hat coincides with her fiery red persona.
7. Allison Russell

Before her solo career, Allison introduced herself as a member of various music groups. Pairing her Canadian roots with her love for music, Allison has accomplished success in receiving Grammy recognition. Serving a buffet of elegance with her sleek knotless braids styled as a top bun. She is photographed at the Grammy’s with this simple, classy look complimenting her enchanting gold gown.
8. Mickey Guyton

As a Texas native and OG country music diva, Mickey has dominated the country genre charts for over a decade. Upon signing up for Capitol Records, Mickey earned her spot on the charts, where she continued to drop hits. Mickey radiates at the 64th Grammy Awards, slaying a thigh-length low pony with colored accessories wrapped around her elongated braid.
9. Rissi Palmer
Not only is Miss Palmer a certified singer and songwriter, but she is also the host of Apple Music’s “Color Me Country Radio.” She easily weaves between both lanes while leveraging her hosting platform to acknowledge fellow country artists. Rissi is a trendsetter rocking this two-toned fro at the CMA’s. Rissi has a portion of her curls in the front dyed copper, contrasting well with her black curls.
10. Shaboozey
We hope you didn’t think we were only showing love to the ladies in this thread. Shaboozey, another collaboration on Cowboy Carter, embraces his natural hair with light brown highlights on every wick. Shaboozey’s sound is unique as he combines both hip-hop and country genres, giving us the best of both worlds.
11. Chapel Hart
Originating from Mississippi, this trio delivers country music with attitude. They are the perfect example of sugar and spice and have the hair to prove it. This trio embodies their own styles individually, with Danica Hart (lead vocalist) rocking the traditional cowgirl hat, Devynn Hart styled wearing black deep wave tresses, and Trea Swindle slaying a short fade. Trea is also pictured wearing bedazzled fringe. Fringe is also significant in cowgirl culture as it was once a solution for cowboys in the West to avoid water absorption on threads or leather attire.
12. Camille Parker
Many of us were introduced to Camille via Apple TV’s music competition, “My Kind of Country.” She leveraged this platform for the success of her solo career, and now she is blazing to the charts in style. Camille Parker is a timeless beauty with her auburn-hued hair. Complimenting her bronze skin, Parker posted a photo rocking a bob full of loose curls.
13. Adia Victoria
Singer, songwriter, and poet Adia is what one would call a triple entendre. She is everything but ordinary, with her free-falling hair resembling a style similar to that of music icon Jimmy Hendrix. Performing at a festival, Adia is sporting loose curled extensions and bangs towards the front to complete this look.
14. Rhiannon Giddens
Rhiannon Giddens gives the music a fun twist, incorporating the sounds of blues and folk music. This banjo queen keeps it simple and sleek. Loose curls with simple parting are perfect for her and her instrument.
15. Beyoncé Knowles Carter
Last, Queen B needs no introduction as she slays her blonde hair with loose curls and a cowgirl hat. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat, Western Turquoise necklace, and thigh-high boots, she is giving the ultimate cowgirl aesthetic. The Houston native helps redefine country music for black artists while promoting her critically acclaimed country album.
The country music icons featured above are mostly iconic because they pushed the boundary for how the masses would perceive country music today. These artists were bold enough to step into a genre that doesn’t always receive the most recognition in music. Not only did they successfully welcome a new era of country music, but they also emerged with a new era of style.
You may have spotted Serene Russell posing for your favorite shoots and swimwear collections. Still, she won many of us with her compelling energy as a contestant on Season 26 of The Bachelor and Season 8 of The Bachelor in Paradise. As a well-versed queen alternating through many hats, nothing can replace her crown of glory, the crown of her natural hair.
As a biracial woman, Serene has endured many ups and downs, with her curls not being welcomed in all spaces. She has also experienced trial and error with dyes and breakage, but now she uses her platform to endorse self-love, starting with hair confidence.
Although she is no longer a teacher, Serene is taking us back to school with lessons on maintaining healthy strands on the go.
What was your relationship to your hair growing up?
I grew up in Oklahoma, where I was the only biracial kid in my class. Sometimes, I felt like my hair wasn’t as accepted. Even if my hair is presentable, and I’ve brushed it and done all these things to it, sometimes people would look at me strangely for wearing my hair up in a curly bun or styling it where I felt cute and comfortable. It’s similar to the stigma of women not wearing makeup to work. Why is my natural hair not fully accepted? One of the biggest things I noticed as a teacher was that many kids said, “Oh my goodness, you have curly hair just like me.”
It takes time for people to get into a rhythm, and even with people who are super big into curly hair influencing, you often see their hair on the very best days. I don’t know about you, but my hair dries differently whenever I get out of the shower. I think it’s about learning and accepting that your hair is changeable, and that doesn’t mean it’s not presentable because it’s different every day or because you don’t have a perfect routine. It doesn’t have to be perfect, so I think curly hair is beautiful and special.
How did you and your mom bond over hair?
“My mom is white and learned how to do braids to help me with my hair. She killed it and I will still have my mom braid my hair to this day. “
My mom herself has pretty curly hair. She has 3B hair, so she’s familiar with curls and knows they’re all different. My 3B textured hair is different from her 3B hair. However, she recognizes that you have to do certain things to keep the hair moisturized. I look back on my school pictures from my childhood, and my mom killed it.
She was always doing fun braids with zigzag parts. I think she taught herself and became great at it. I appreciate my mom’s willingness to learn about my hair and not letting me straighten it as a child. She always encouraged me to embrace my curls.
As a cast member of The Bachelor, do you feel that your natural curls were embraced during filming?
Yes, they wanted me to be however I felt most comfortable. I did end up wearing my hair primarily straight just out of convenience because I know that I can silk press or straighten my hair and leave it alone for a week. When you’re being told to get ready in 10 minutes, sometimes it’s just easier if your hair is already done.
That was a big learning experience for me because we were traveling worldwide. Traveling from country to country in different climates, spending 14 hours on a plane and getting off was a huge adjustment. My skin was suffering, my hair was suffering, everything was suffering. For me it was a matter of what I felt like I could do quickly. I do think there is a misunderstanding of how long it can take to do curly hair sometimes, so I leaned more towards the silk press when I was on TV.
I learned some hair tips and tricks when I was in Mexico filming for the Bachelor in Paradise. When we filmed the finale for the show, I straightened conditioner into my hair, and that was how I escaped having frizz because you’re in a different country. You’ve only packed what you have and you’ve been there for however long it may be, you’re kind of at the mercy of the people around you to find hair products for you. So that was one thing I did but would not recommend unless you’re in a bind. I thought about using protective styles, and I wish I had more knowledge before going to paradise.
Now I am growing into the beauty space while being an advocate and representative for curly haired boys and girls. The biggest difference in my life since reality TV that I’ve noticed is so many people commenting or messaging me, especially when I wear my hair styled curly, celebrating it and saying, “My daughter has curly hair or my son has curly hair.” Seeing people in the media embrace their curly, textured hair is so good for them. I think that’s been one of the biggest differences for me since the show, and it has changed my life. It’s made me grow a new appreciation for my hair.
What does your hair regime look like?
I wash my hair once a week. If I’m wearing it straight, I do a co-wash halfway through the week, where I wash my hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. I’ve found that my curly hair tends to get more dry than my straight hair. So, about halfway through the week, I reintroduce that moisture back into my regime, and I feel like that has been the most helpful for me.
What brands of products are you using to lock in hydration?
I just started using Pureology’s Hydrate Collection, and I was pleasantly surprised because it’s not necessarily geared towards curly hair. It’s a hydrating line that works well for my hair. I must be very careful with hydrating products because my curls can get weighed down easily. Lately, I have been loving their hydrating line and their smooth line.
I also have multiple textures all over my head, but my hair has mostly 3B and 3C textures. My hair is so fine that I can’t use many oil treatments because they will weigh it down. So, it has been a learning curve my whole life learning about what to do with my hair. I think what we’re learning now as we learn more about curly hair is that every head of hair is unique.
What advice would you give women trying to reverse heat damage without having to do the big chop?
I had some chemical damage done to my hair a couple of years ago. I was like a level 10 blonde at one point, and my hair was very light. People automatically look at my hair and assume “okay, this is gonna take a while, she’s got coarse curly hair,” but my hair lifts very quickly. It reached the point where my hair was transparent, stretchy and coming out in clumps. I tried ApHogee Protein Treatment, but you must be careful to avoid protein overload.
It brought my clear, stretchy curls back to life. I really just had to get a trim after that. I would say if you have really bad chemical or heat damage, do not just run to get the big chop. Give your hair a little time to bounce back. If you’ve blown out that cuticle with heat or chemical products like bleach, you can reintroduce that protein and continually balance it with moisture.
From curl embracement to damage and TV styling, Serene has walked us through her hair journey and how she’s loved it from every season.

The Bronx native graced the MTV Music Awards rocking all-white lace complimenting her highly pigmented auburn hair. This bob is full and defined as Spice is photographed with her curls elongated and tight. The reduced frizz of this look highlights the definition and shine of her perfectly sprung curls.
4. The Eras Tour
The Super Bowl link-up might not have been as random as you thought, as Spice was featured in Swift’s Eras Tour during the summer. If you notice, Spice’s curls seem darker during her summer appearances and lighter during the fall and winter months. We love the idea of seasonal hair color. It’s like a partnership with Mother Nature to ensure radiance, and we are here for it.
5. Frontal Bob with Loose Curls
Grrah! Spice was definitely in her mood with this crimson bob. Deviating from her typical bob, Spice is captured slaying a red frontal wig, complimenting her skin tone. We love the switch up but most importantly, we admire the health. She is embodying diversity while protecting her natural tresses.
6. Swoop Frontal Bob
The platinum-selling artist is snapped rocking a swooped auburn bob with the ends flipped and curled. This look is an ode to all the 90s baddies topped with her signature Spice color. This is another protective style; her natural curls are preserved under this fitted look.

This is an archival favorite as Spice is seen with her clementine coils elongated and fluffy. Her curls were bouncy and full as they cascaded above her brow, giving her a thick, curly bang.
10. Crimson Curly Bob

I bet you didn’t know that she devours with her coils in red too. Subbing out spice for hot red, Spice is seen flicking it up on her TikTok. If we didn’t know any better, we might’ve thought she invented these spicy colors.
11. Copper Done Propper
Mwah, no frizz! Spice posted on TikTok sporting her signature bob but with blonde undertones. Her ability to experiment with color while keeping her tight curl pattern is inspiring. She gleams while keeping her natural strands strong.
12. Peek-a-boo Roots
We absolutely love this style on Spice because we can see a peak into her dark roots. It is a slight twist to her traditional bob. However, having undyed roots ties her dark-colored features together well.
13. Spice for Teen Vogue
Spice is giving glam “smoochie” in her feature for Teen Vogue. Sticking to her signature look, she gives an elegant spin dressed in ruby red topped with diamond accessories.
14. The Boy’s a Liar but The Bob is Not

One of our favorite looks on Spice as her curls pop sprightly amongst her pink romper.
15. Curly Bob Chain

You know she’s the queen of the curly bob when her chain says so. Ice Spice is captured rocking a diamond embellished chain with her iconic bob as a pendant around her neck. This chain alone confirms her reign as queen.
Still not convinced Ice Spice is the queen of the curly bob? We’ll sum it up for you. Spice practices healthy hair techniques so as not to ruin her natural curls. When experimenting with new styles, she protects her hair with quality wigs. She’s never dull as she switches her hair tone from auburn to hot red and sometimes pink. Lastly, she styles her hair to compliment her fashion while keeping it hot throughout the seasons.

Alicia Keys is the perfect example of the term aesthetic, from her soulful persona to her culturally stamped hairstyles. She has placed her spin on the braids trend and has dropped Keys Soulcare hair collection as an addition to her icon status.
Just like the Grammy award-winning songstress, you can embody this aesthetic too. We have outlined the perfect play-by-play to scoring tens on your braid-back style.

Healthy Foundation
1). To sport this look, we advise having a healthy foundation. Your hair will need to be washed and blow-dried to ace this style. For healthy hair under your protective style, we advise a hydrational shampoo like Rizos Curls Hydrating Shampoo and conditioner combo from our NC Shop.
Parting
2). Once hair is blow-dried and refreshed, you will part your hair however many braids you want. You will line each part with edge control or smoothing gel for a crisp section. Then, take pieces of your natural hair and twine your strands in a pattern-like way. You will repeat this pattern until you reach the tip of your hair for a complete single braid.
Extensions
3). This step is for my ladies who love hangtime. To add extra flair, you can buy a pack of textured hair. If you are like us, you know we are going with ole faithful and that’s one pack of Sensationnel’s X-pression braiding hair in whatever length or color you desire. Just like the pattern in step 2, you will repeat the same order but with the braiding hair mixed in.
Accessories
4). Get creative! We love this style because not only is it protective of our natural strands, but it also allows us to include some of our favorite accessories. You can add nude-colored beads to the bottom like Key’s did in her 06 era. You can also add extra curls in between for a natural boho look. The braid-back look can also be styled in a low bun. With laid edges, you, too, can embody this sleek look.
One thing about Key’s is that she is a versatile Queen, and she has the career and hair to prove it. She has given us multiple braid-back styles, so we’re throwing in a bonus look for the ladies with range.
Fulani Braids
Fulani Braids are the perfect braid back style to rock this Black History Month as they symbolize origin, particularly from West Africa to Nigeria. This style represents history; wherever you go, you will be recognized for rocking this cultural statement.
Although similar to the traditional braid backs, the front row of Fulani braids is typically braided down 25%-50% of the way on the head, while the remaining hair is used for single braids.
Feed-In Technique
1). To accomplish this look, you would use a similar method as listed before. You can either start your braids traditionally, or you can start your braids doing the feed-in method. The feed-in style can be accomplished by using smaller portions of hair to gradually feed into whatever size braid you want.
Creativity
2). For Fulani-style braiding, the part should not go all the way down like a cornrow. You will part the top row of your hair, but it should not be a deep part vertically. You can be as unique as you’d like with the braids. The zig-zag braids are a nice touch if you’re an Allen Iverson fan like me. You can also part a reverse braid in the front, similar to Key’s.
Styling
3). Once you have parted and braided those rows down, you will use your remaining hair to part the rest of your braids in the back. These braids don’t have to be braided down. They can hang freely for more style flexibility. We love the high-braided Fulani Ponytail.

Maintenance
4). You may wonder what’s next after completing the braiding and styling process for this look. At NC, we value longevity and want you to maintain and preserve your natural tresses to your healthiest ability. We recommend African Pride Black Castor Miracle Braid & Scalp Cleansing Rinse for braid maintenance at our NC Shop to keep your braids shiny and refreshed.
