How to Build a Basic Curly Hair Care Regimen in 5 Simple Steps

At Naturally Curly we completely understand that no matter if you’re a beginning transitioner or even a hair care hobbyist, it’s tough to build the perfect curly hair care regimen that works perfectly for you! From oil-based no-poo to strand silkening co-wash, it’s a little nightmarish navigating the beauty aisles for products that make sense for your curl pattern and texture. That’s why we reached out to a few trusted beauty aficionados at Target to give you a solid understanding of the curly hair products they carry that will enhance your natural beauty. We think you’re going to love trying them!

To you with the inside scoop on these products, all available at your local Target, we’ve asked curly influencer Yajaira De La Espada, also known as Curl Catalyst, which products will work best for a curly hair care regimen. Here are her recommended products and uses:

No. 1 – Clean Up Your Act with a Sulfate-Free Shampoo

The ORS Black Olive Oil Repair 7TM Sulfate Free Shampoo is used as a shampoo and conditioner. It’s designed to give your curls copious amounts of moisture via its creamy to rich lather. “When you put a lot of products in your hair, like I do, you definitely need something that’s going to take the products out,” says Espada, “That build up is not your friend. This is going to help you with that build up.” Great for all hair types, this is the kind of shampoo every curly can use in her regimen.

No. 2 – Don’t Strip Your Strands! Use a Co-Wash

Co-wash your curls to gently cleanse your curls if you’re not going to using a shampoo on your wash day. A staple in the curly community comes in the form of the Creme of Nature Argan Pure-Licious Co-Wash. This lightweight, color-safe formula is made with Argan Oil and Argan Butter which promises “no frizz, no shrinkage, and no dryness” – a curly girl’s dream!

No. 3 – Get to the Root of the Matter with a Conditioner

“After I co-wash, I tend to use a deep conditioner,” Espada says, “The deep conditioner I got today is the Alikay Naturals Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner. It has honey in it!” Yes, honey – it does! The honey offers thirsty curls and dry, damaged hair relief while sage and babassu enriches hair follicles. Curl Catylyst uses this treatment once every two weeks for best results. If you don’t mind smell like a goddess all day long, you’re going to absolutely love this deep conditioner.

No. 4 – Get Ready to Slay with Leave-In for Curls

We all want gorgeous curls everyday of the week without having to do a wash-and-go Monday to Sunday. “The next step you can use is a leave-in conditioner,” says Espada, “I’m trying to get into the habit of making this (touches soft, luxuriously moisturized curls”> last all week instead of two days like it usually lasts.” That’s why the Jane Carter Solution Slumber Party Creamy Leave-In is such a curl-saver! You can use it during the day to refresh curls, or at night to replenish hair overnight with nourishment. Oh, it’s cruelty free and smells divine!

No. 5 – Slather On the Cream

Espada picked a bottle of Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper Styling Cream and reaped immediate benefits. “I like use creams to put that curl definition in my hair,” she explains, “and also to start shaping my hair. I’m making it into a heart-shape. I’m deconstructing it, putting it into an afro or defining it to do a super defined twist out!” This speaks volumes to the versatility that this styling cream offers curls! If you’re in a humid climate or your curls are prone to product build-up, you’re definitely going to need this cream in your life.

So what do you think? Are you feeling excited to get products specifically designed to help your curls thrive?

If you need more inspiration, please sit down and take note from the expert herself! In this video you will learn how to build your very own curly hair care regimen with Yajaira De La Espada, an Isla de Wepa-based Beauty and Lifestyle Influencer that spreads her love of curly hair trends and maintenance throughout the Internet via CurlyCatalyst.com. Fashion Editor Claire Sulmers Rocks Colorful, Professional Dreadlocks
Claire Sulmers, Dark and Lovely #LoveMyColor Spokeswoman

Before becoming a world renowned fashion editor, Claire Sulmers was a burgeoning journalist, eager to press her finger on the pulse of the beat. Not a local events or top-of-the-hour news beat, but a beat that aligned with the unmistakable ratatat that passion plays. That beat that fuels innovation, ignites creativity, and drowns out the rebel yelling of stale, yet familiar, doubts. After being told, time and again to blend in with the norm, Claire Sulmers followed her own beat to its source, an overrunning wellspring of ideas, bold colors, and moxy: fashion and beauty.

One could say that Sulmers, an enthusiast of aesthetic and lover of the written word, was destined to be the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the wildly successful Fashion Bomb Daily, the leader of multicultural fashion and beauty online publications. Destiny, however seemingly fated, requires action. In her unique, unrelenting way, Sulmers claimed a stake in the media space to empower and uplift multicultural communities around the world and continues to inspire readers every minute of every day.

I asked the lionized editor about what her life, career, and natural hair journey has taught her about offline communication and the power of influence.

Claire Sulmers, Dark and Lovely #LoveMyColor Spokeswoman

“What inspired me to create Fashion Bomb Daily was the drive to shine a light on and highlight women of color and multicultural women, and give them content they might not be able to find in traditional media,” Sulmers said, her authoritative yet charming voice chimed in the Naturally Curly conference room speakerphone, filling the space with an almost tangible energy, “That pursuit, that mission is what continues to inspire me everyday.”

Understanding the isolation women of color experience when searching for publications that mirror their culture, beliefs, style aspirations, and various shades of skin color, Sulmers knew that the best space to share her passion was online. Creating her editorial publication then became imperative, and in the long term, overwhelmingly important.

“I’ve seen that over the past ten years that I’ve been running Fashion Bomb Daily that we’ve made lots of great strides in terms of diversity in media and well-balanced, well-rounded images of black women, but we still have a long way to go,” Sulmers said, “We also need greater representations of diverse groups of women in general, but in the fashion industry in particular.”

“When you’re a  beginning journalist you always want to find out what your beat is, and I always gravitated toward fashion and beauty.” -Claire Sulmers

Wanting to further understand how Sulmers became a pillar for an underrepresented segment within the fashion and beauty landscape, I asked her about personal and professional experiences that initially led her to fashion blogging, that singular beat that she willfully shares on a daily basis.

“I’ve been a journalist for years,” she began, explaining the inner workings of her indelible entrepreneurial spirit,”I started off as a fashion and beauty intern at Upscale magazine. It was my first experience with writing about fashion and beauty. Then I went on to work at internships for Newsweek and New York Magazine, and my first job was at Real Simple magazine as a researcher/reporter.”

“While I was at Real Simple, I realized that fashion was more of my focus. I made a request to join the fashion department, and I asked to write more about fashion, and people looked me up and down and they said that I wasn’t cut out for it,” Sulmers reflected, “Or they said that there was somebody else on staff who was my age that they thought was more appropriate for that position.”

Claire Sulmers, Dark and Lovely #LoveMyColor Spokeswoman

Experiencing this determent from her true calling, Sulmers did not let naysaying punctuate her professional growth or her desire to share her fashion expertise with multicultural audiences.

“I started the Fashion Bomb Daily based on the fact that I love to write and that I love fashion. From that frustration of not being able to write about subjects that I wanted to explore in my day-to-day job, my publication was born.” – Claire Sulmers

“For a long time, I was writing for French Vogue and Italian Vogue at the same time as I was writing for the Fashion Bomb Daily. There came a point when I realized I couldn’t spread myself too thin and that I needed to focus 100% on the website. That’s when I transitioned into becoming a professional blogger and the owner of my magazine.”

Sulmers’ vision and execution spurred me to delve a bit further into what foundations she established to get her to make such a remarkable and life changing decision that not only propelled her professionally, but invited women from around the world into her fold.

I wanted to know more: who is the powerhouse of industry? How did she gain such laser-like lines of sight? Who is this woman that wears well crafted clothing and golden locs as radiant as the sun? I simply had to know if her hair had something to do with her genius.

Sulmers cordially replied, “When I was younger, my mom used to always cornrow my hair. There were two seconds where I tried to do a perm and it was just a disaster! My mom didn’t really know how to do my hair so I just looked crazy for a few years.

After that, I got box braids in college, during my freshman and sophomore years. After a while, I was tired of taking them out and putting them back in, or finding somebody to do my hair and I thought, ‘Box braids have the same kind of look and aesthetic that I want as locs!’ So, I went from having longer braids to having to take my braids out.”

From that realization, Sulmers sought the advice and expertise of a hair stylist in Boston, where she attended Harvard for her undergraduate education.

Braids Out, Locs In

“Over the summer, I found somebody to loc my hair and it worked,” she explained, “It was extremely short and it was kind of disconcerting because I was teaching at a summer camp in the inner city where my students were young black girls who said to me, ‘Your hair is ugly!’ and ‘Guys would want to talk to you if you’d leave your weave in.’”

To further add insult to beauty, the girls would say to Sulmers, “You look like an African!”

Yes, it’s true. Kids can be cruel, but Sulmers took their observations and commentary in stride.

“They said it like it’s a bad thing to look like an African. It was just like crazy to deal with that bullying when I first took the plunge to go totally natural. But it shined a light on a lot of misconceptions of natural hair in our community.”

Understanding the lack of visibility of locs and natural hair styles presented by the media to the black community, Sulmers’ graciously analyzed the climate and developed her own conclusion, saying “That was several years ago, so I’m sure that things have changed. People are starting to see more natural hair styles in the media and there’s a lot more acceptance of it in our community in general.”

Sulmers further explained how the young ladies’ comments held her captive to her own standards of beauty.

“It was just an humbling time because, aside from what the students were saying, I wasn’t feeling like my normal, pretty, gorgeous self, you know?,” Sulmers relayed, “Not everybody can rock the short hair cut. I looked better with longer hair. I think anybody would go through that… a phase from when their hair is extremely short when it was once long, and waiting for it to grow out. You deal with feelings of just not having the highest self-esteem, not feeling as confident… but you just deal with it! You grow with your hair over time and you just have to know, deep down inside, that you’re beautiful no matter what.”

“And because that moment was over 10 years ago, I’ve grown into the style and my locs have gotten longer and fuller. My natural hair is now blonde so I’m able to dye it and do different things with it. It’s definitely an investment of time. Yes, it was an humbling moment,” Sulmers restated, “but definitely worth it.”

Humble. Gracious. Beautiful.

Claire Sulmers, Dark and Lovely #LoveMyColor Spokeswoman

“My uncle told me, ‘You can have that hairstyle after you’re established in your career, but when you first start off, you need to have straight hair!’” – Claire Sulmers

This leader of the fashion and beauty industry had not only gone through her hair journey with criticism from members of her own community, but she was given well-meaning, albeit discouraging, life advice from her family members when she loc’ed her natural hair. Able to think positively about herself and embrace the beauty of her locs, Sulmers continued to defy cultural norms that women across all cultures are still confronted with today.

“My dad called my locs ‘pumpernickels’,” Sulmers laughed, recalling formative moments in her natural hair journey.

“My family members would say things like that, and of course I ignored them,” said the proudly loc’ed trailblazer, “I think I have this ability to ignore a lot of negativity in my life, and thankfully I’ve worked in a creative field where I was able to forge out on my own and do my own thing.”

To further amplify her love of natural hair, Sulmers introduced at-home color treatments into her beauty regimen.

“I love trying out a lot of different colors,” Sulmers told me, explaining how she got her goldie locs, “My hair is naturally darker, more black than brown, somewhere in between. I’ve tried lighter brown. I’ve tried red. I’ve done chestnut blonde. Overall, I was looking to reinvent myself.

As my website continued to grow and get really great press, I was trying to figure out how I could make a statement. I thought, ‘Let me just play around with color!’ At first, it was more platinum… It’s not as platinum anymore. It’s still a bright blonde and I think it’s a good look. It’s a distinctive look. Now, when people will see me they say, ‘I knew that was you! I saw your golden locks!’ So it’s just one of those things that’s become my signature.”

Indeed, it has. So much in fact, Dark and Lovely deemed Claire Sulmers as one of its spokeswomen to spearhead their #LoveMyColor campaign, a call to action for women of color to fully embrace the bold lifestyles they lead. Within this campaign, Sulmers and other spokespersons have been given a platform to share their love of colored natural hair and locs with the world. All women are invited to create their own meme by visiting www.lovemycolor.com and filling in the field that dares you to share what your color means to you! You’ll also be able to upload your favorite photograph or selfie to show the entire world how proud you are of your beautiful mane.

“I’ve worked in print publication for several years and then became a blogger. Now, I’m Editor-in-Chief for my own online magazine. I think that in the creative field, you have a little bit more freedom to express yourself.” – Claire Sulmers

After listening to and processing stagnated opinions of beauty from family and peers, Sulmers moved forward in time with that inner beat that only she marched to. She put one foot in front of the other and refused to turn back ‘round to see if what she believed to be true resounded in the echoing chambers of onlookers’ minds.

How did she do it?, I wondered, What drove her to continue along a path that was unbeaten, unforged, unseen?

“On my Tumblr, I used to record letters that people would send to me,” Sulmers told me, her voice piquing with awe, “This one young lady wrote me a letter… It always sticks out to me. It said:

“Thank you for writing the Fashion Bomb. I teach French in an all Black high school in rural Mississippi, and your blog is slowly convincing my students that fashion and style are not a White people’s thing or rich people’s thing. You inspire me and you inspire my babies. Thank you.” -Monica M. D.

Needless to say, Sulmers was honored.

“I always think of Fashion Bomb Daily readers as being young women of color, in urban cities, moving and shaking, and they’re on the train to go out for cocktails or a martini,” she said, gratitude lining her words, “That letter showed me that we, at Fashion Bomb Daily, reach as far as rural Mississippi! Not only is it impacting women of color, but it’s also showing young people that fashion is for everyone and fashion is for them, and that they can take part in something that is a seemingly elitist, exclusive industry.

Letters like that touch my heart and make me smile. I receive a lot of letters from people that tell me that after they read Fashion Bomb Daily they feel beautiful or they don’t feel so out of place or they feel at home reading the content. Instances like that encourage me, and let me know that I’m on the right track.”

Can you feel that beat?

Claire Sulmers, Dark and Lovely #LoveMyColor Spokeswoman

Claire Sulmers is more than a writer, more than an editor, more than a fashion influencer… She’s a force.

Wherever she goes, people follow those golden locs and sing her praises. Not due to a demagogue-like prowess, or flexing her entrepreneurial prowess, but because she’s authentic. She’s real. Her fans are loyal and eager to learn more from her expertise.

“A lot of people see me in public and say ‘Hello’ and that’s great,” Sulmers explained, “In Walgreens it happens. In museums it happens. More so, in places like TopShop or Zara, I’ll run into a Fashion Bomb Daily readers working or shopping there.”

What’s truly remarkable about Sulmers is her humility.

“I know that Fashion Bomb Daily’s and my personal successes are a result of fans and readers who’ve been so supportive of me over the years, and I love that. I embrace it.” – Claire Sulmers

To give back to her fan base and longtime readers, Sulmers created Cocktails with Claire. This event spans several metropoli including Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, New York, and Toronto. She’s also touching base with fans in the United Kingdom.

“Cocktails with Claire is a chance for me to meet and greet with readers,” Sulmers said, “It gives them an opportunity to network with each other, to have cocktails and h’orderves and shop. It’s bringing the online community offline to begin fostering a community of fashion enthusiasts and tastemakers.”

Wrapping up our conversation, I asked Claire to share her insights with all women that belong to the natural and curly hair community. She had this to say:

“Be confident! Move boldly in the direction that works for you. Pursue your passion, and reevaluate your steps as you go along. Experience new things, travel, go to new places and continue to be inspired by the world.”

Another parting gift she presented, “Experiment with color! As I said before, I’ve have brown hair. I’ve had red hair. I’ve had black hair. So, experiment and have fun and see what works for you and what sticks. Nurture that great self esteem and be bold! And don’t be afraid of getting it wrong! You’ll get it right the next time.”

Take heed of these wise words spoken by a strong, brilliant woman: go bold or go home!

Claire Sulmers, Dark and Lovely #LoveMyColor Spokeswoman

For many women of color, the strength of their decisions are rooted beyond pigmented surfaces. These womens’ depths shine in the form of the jewels of their crowns: locs and curls and waves and kinks. These are the marks of varied experiences and life lessons, and natural, uncompromising beauty.

To live boldly, forging a path that has yet to be seen… that’s the beat! Your heart, your passion, your spirit is the drum. Claire Sulmers is an instructor of not only how undulate with the rhythm, but a living example of what can happen when you’re in sync with the flow of your true self.

How I Killed the Crunch: A Tale of Two Gels
Ampro Pro Styl Olive Oil Gel and Coconut Oil Styling Gel

Mulling over which oil might be better for my 4C curls, a product war upended my once collected thoughts. Olive oil and coconut oil began fighting a battle for real estate in my curly girl product collection. Sure – all is fair in love and war, but I’ve experienced benefits from both of these moisturizing oils.

So when it comes to styling products that feature both, how could I possibly choose between them?

The fine folks at Ampro Gel helped me out by asking me to try not one, but two of their gels that feature none other than my beloved olive and coconut oils: the Ampro Pro Styl Olive Oil Gel and the Ampro Pro Styl Clear Ice Coconut Oil Styling Gel. If you know anything about gels, you know that Ampro is among the most praised and has been a NaturallyCurly community favorite for several years. Now what you may not know is that all of Ampro’s alcohol-free styling gels are fantastic for coily girls looking for products that don’t leave residue on curls, won’t dry out and will never flake off during the day.

I felt compelled to tell you about how both of these gels helped me kill the crunch. This Ampro-sponsored post is brought to you by people who know that styling products for curly women and men of the world can do a whole lot more than just hold your ‘do in place, but keep curls moisturized and looking super fly all day long.

A Tale of Two Gels

Beauty stores across the country showcase an array of curly hair products, and in my experience there are two clear-cut types of gels:
  1. Those that work well enough to offer enough hold for cute, yet sleek looks for work and happy hour
  2. Those that don’t work as well as you expect them to, flaking and crunch crunch crunching when dry!

As it turns out, these gels I tried are neither.

They both stand alone in their curl styling benefits, and yet both have become staples in the natural hair community. After using both over a few days, I can definitely see why.

Clear Ice Coconut Oil Styling Gel: The Gel That Refuses to Flake on You

Use generous amounts for strong hold.

It’s becoming more and more difficult to find products that actually do what their product label says they’re going to do. That’s why, even as a pretty well-researched product junkie, I always go into the application process with a grain of salt. That being said, I’ve found a foolproof way to test products on my 4C curls: the trusted wash-n-go.

This simple test evidences to me whether or not a product works well for my curl pattern. Most importantly, it shows indications of the product’s ingredient integrity (e.g., does moisture last all day, will my curls stay defined after a few hours, etc.“>. So even though I’m going into this test knowing full well that I might end up looking like I’ve done absolutely nothing to my curls, it’s the best way for me to know whether or not I’ll keep a product in my Holy Grail collection.

When Ampro’s coconut oil gel was introduced to me, I hypothesized that because it has coconut oil in it, my curls would soak it up and would dry without seeing one gel-induced flake. To quell my curiosity about the product, I wore it all day at work and was not one bit surprised: this gel works!

What I liked the most about this styling gel was that it gave me lasting hold throughout the day. Sometimes I wear a satin scarf, tied into a headband, which helps me give the illusion of bangs (pictured below”>. I like to either finger coil or plait the front of my hair, using gel to hold and set the shape. This coconut oil styling gel definitely did that, and absolutely refused to flake once it had throughly dried. Color me impressed!

If you like a gel that will hold your style and smells absolutely divine, you’re going to need to get yourself a tub of the good stuff. For those of us that definitely hate using gels that flake on our curls, the Ampro Pro Styl Coconut Oil Gel is going to be your go-to styler for years to come.

Now, take a look at what happened when I used the coconut oil gel’s sister product in my hair.

Olive Oil Gel: The Gel That Refuses to Quit

COMING SOON to CurlMart!

A little backstory on my strong affinity for Ampro Pro Styl Olive Oil Gel: I live with a professional hair stylist. Beyond that, she’s my most trusted curlfriend because she knows that I really, really, really love trying new products for my 4Cs. She can also read ingredients and tell me if certain products will work for my texture.

Several moons ago, she came home with with a box full of gel. Wouldn’t you know it, they were tubs of Ampro gel – all of the olive oil variety. She unloaded them on me and said, “Oh, yeah! I figured you’d really like this gel-it smells soooo good.”

Being a hardcore product junkie, I said, “Cool. Thanks!” and slinked off into my room. I immediately dipped my hands into a vat of the green stuff, lifted the gel to my nose for a brief sniff (yes, it smells lovely”>, and methodically finger curled sections of hair until I was satisfied.

Yes, it was love at first edge lay down… and still is.

If you haven’t tried it yet and aren’t sensitive to product dyes or proteins, I just know you’re going to love it! You’ll be amazed how much this olive oil gel can change the look and feel of styled hair. What I love the most about this gel-that I’ve been using for a cool 4 months now-is that it doesn’t make your curls crunchy! It makes them soft, manageable, and holds them in place. If you have springy coils that have a hard time retaining moisture and have a mind of their own, I 100% recommend using Ampro Pro Styl Olive Oil Gel. Its light hold is perfect for styles that don’t require that much hold and for locking in moisture.

Why is this stuff so good?

4C coils, moisture-locked after wash-and-go

Needing more information about why Ampro Gels are so effective at killing that crunchy feeling curls can get after products are applied, Naturally Curly reached out to the Ampro office and connected with Camille Wright, Ampro Gel’s Vice President of Public Relations and Social Networking. We wanted to get a little more insight from the source, so here’s what she told us:

“Our Coconut Oil Gel is protein free, paraben free, sulfate free and free of dyes versus the Olive Oil Gel – which is an awesome product, but more traditionally made,” Mrs. Wright said, “Both are free of alcohol and parabens, both are of the most moisturizing gels we’ve ever made, but the Olive Oil Gel is made for people who aren’t sensitive to protein or dyes.”

I love rocking these 4C curls with Ampro Gels!

Products, especially those that work as promised, deserve advocates. The Ampro Pro Styl line, featuring olive oil and coconut oil gels, is an example of a product that delivers – I’ll definitely advocate for them. Perfect for 4C curlies, like me, these gels won’t let you down. Whether you’re getting styled for a night of dancing with your curl crew or smoothing down your strands for a special event, both of these alcohol- and paraben-free gels will help you look and feel your best while killing the crunch!

Ampro's Curl Enhancer and Argan Oil Gels are Fantastic, as well!

The gels pictured with the olive oil and coconut oil gels are also members of the Ampro Pro Styl Gel family that you can try: the Argan Oil Gel and the Curl Enhancer, which I’m interested in trying because it’s designed for “extra dry hair”.

Haven’t tried Ampro gels before? Do you already have a favorite Ampro gel that you swear by? This is your chance to share your stories with me in the comments section below!

As ever, stay curly!

5 Stunning Ways to Heat-Style Natural Hair

What I love most about naturally curly hair is that there’s more to it than meets the eye. It bounces. It stretches. It absorbs moisture like a sponge. It can even be blown out and styled in various ways to complement my mood or outfit. The following heat-styling tools that you can find at Sally Beauty are ideal for naturally curly hair. These tools will not only help you achieve the most epic blowout of your life, but give you five gorgeous looks to fall head over heels for.

Tool Science Nano-Silver Blow Dryer

Even though I love my curly hair, I really don’t like frizzy hair. Thanks to its static electricity reducing ionic generator, this blow dryer is the ultimate frizz fighter. It also protects product-coated strands from drying out, resulting in moisturized hair that’s ready to be shown off.

When used for a natural hair blowout, the Nano Silver leaves hair more manageable for versatile styling. You’ll also notice a shinier, softer head of hair with every use. In the blowout-to-natural styles video, you’ll notice how easily model Natasha’s natural hair can be manipulated and styled because of this tool.

Hot Shot Tools 1-inch Gold Curling Iron

Blowouts are really cool because when done right, your hair will be in the perfect state to show off Barrel Curls. This sophisticated, yet lighthearted look requires a curling iron that heats up to 450°F. That’s where the Hot Shot Tools 1-inch Gold Curling Iron’s 24k gold plated barrel really makes an impression.

Always on the lookout for how I can create long-lasting curls, I’ve found that this curling iron is the best for my coily hair. Its heating element and barrel use a pulsing technology that enhances heat-up and heat recovery processes.

Styling Aids

When perfectly setting that Pompadour or twisting those Victory Rolls just so, these unsung styling heros help set the stage. Trusty styling aids that you can rely on include butterfly clips to keep hair sectioned and in place, tease brushes for those larger than life days, and a jumbo rake comb that’s perfect for detangling and working in product.

Using the right tools for natural hair will give you endless hair styling possibilities. Watch as model Natasha’s look is transformed in one sitting by Austin, TX based stylist Brooke Michie. I think I’ll try the Braided Crown – it’s so pretty!

Feeling inspired? Learn more about the Tool Science Nano-Silver Blow Dryer and Hot Shot Tools 1inch Salan Culing Iron 24K Gold by visiting Sally Beauty online.

How to Lock in Moisture with a Gelée

The occasional bad hair day is bound to happen. From frazzling frizzies to flaking product, taming that kinky curly coily wavy mane takes a whole lot of love and loads of moisture. The following pre-styling steps show how to moisture lock thirsty tresses of any curl pattern.

1. Condition Before Styling

It can’t be stressed enough to curlies, new and seasoned: conditioning is QUEEN for curls! When hair is conditioned by a natural oil-infused conditioner that defines and softens curls, it’s more resilient and primed to respond appropriately to your favorite products during your styling routine.

For effective conditioning, apply a generous amount of conditioner to wet hair starting at the ends and working your way to the roots and scalp. To make styling easier, detangle your strands with a wide tooth comb or your fingers. Leave the conditioner in for 3 to 5 minutes. If you need to deep condition, leave in for 15 to 20 minutes or longer for added softness. Once time is up, wash the conditioner out of your hair and dry with a tee shirt.

2. Use Gelée After Conditioning

Gelée is a styling tool that holds hair styles in place. When used for natural hair styling, curl definition is this tool’s key attribute. From bantu knots to beachbound waves, gelée is used to keep the hair strands together and well defined.

A gelée, such as Dippity Do’s GIRLS WITH curls Curl Shaping Gelée, that not only acts a sealant, but also nourishes your curls will be best for this step. The alcohol-free formula won’t dry out your curls, your scalp won’t be stripped of its natural oils, and your strands will be nourished with aloe vera and vitamin E, not stifled by parabens.

Gelée with a light hold don’t tend to flake, and Dippity Do’s formula smells pleasant; not too perfumey.

3. Style Those Curls!

Waiting for hair to dry so you can to see the results doesn’t have to take long. Since gelée staves off environmental and general styling damage, blow drying twist/braids/waves on medium heat for a few minutes reduces wait time. Unravel protective styles and loosen ringlets to reveal a fierce mane a supreme curly cuteness!

No matter how you style your hair, whether it’s wash-and-go or an up ‘do, Dippity Do GIRLS WITH curls Curl Shaping Gelée will seal your hair strands with moisture, help you knock out frizz, and define your curls all at the same time. Watch this video to see how Brand Influencer Edgy creates this super cute ponytail with bangs.

3 New Ways to Stop Breakage While Shower Detangling…And No We’re Not Talking Pre-poo

Everyone has tips for reducing breakage while detangling: using a pre-poo to soften the hair, detangling starting from the ends and working toward the roots, and of course using conditioners and detanglers with tons of slip. Those are old news, but here are more ways to get through your detangling session with even less breakage, regardless of if you opt to use your fingers or a comb.

Smooth your hair before combing

After stepping in the shower, allow your hair to become fully saturated with water under the shower stream. This will help to detangle while elongated your curls. Depending on the density of your hair, this can take time (2-5 min.”> so be patient. Then, part your hair in their respective sections. Before you apply shampoo to the first section, begin to smooth your hair between your palms in a downward motion, encouraging some of the loose hair to be released and moving some of the tangles toward the end of the hair. Doing this shifts most of the tangles toward the ends instead of being throughout the section. This has certainly decreased the amount of breakage that I experience so give it a try.

Read more: The ABC’s of Detangling Knots

Use shampoos that doesn’t cause your hair to retract

Now you’re probably wondering how I was able to shampoo without detangling first. Well, it all depends on the shampoo. Find a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo that does not cause your hair to retract and tangle. This is another way to decrease breakage, because you are not encouraging your hair to retract on top of the tangles and knots that are already there. In addition to reducing breakage, you are also saving time, product, and money because you do not have to detangle, shampoo, and deep condition. Now you can merge your detangling with your deep conditioning process. Here are cleansers that help elongate your curls and coils to reduce tangles.

Squeeze in conditioner before shingling

This is a small, but helpful tip. When I use to apply conditioners, moisturizers, and leave-in conditioners after cleansing, I would take product from the container and finger comb it in my hair. Now, I squeeze down the length of hair and then shingle starting from the ends and working up toward the roots. Applying product down the length of the hair will ensure that the strands are well lubricated before adding tension from manipulation.

Being mindful of the cleanser that you are using and adjusting your technique can make all the difference.

10 Products You Can’t Seem to Get Enough Of (and They’re All on Sale)

We love finding the next new product as much as the next curly (maybe even more”> but sometimes we just like to fall back on the tried and true Holy Grails in the curly community. How do we know you love them? CurlMart can’t keep them on the shelves! That, and the hundreds of reviews that you have left. So here are your top 10 favorite curly products, according to your wallets, and why you like them.

Kinky-Curly Knot Today (562 reviews”>

CeCe Steppe (Type 3c”> says: I tried this again for the third time and I won’t be returning it. I really like the way it defines my curls as well as how it moisturizes my hair.

Lov’nwaves (Type 2c”> says: I was afraid to try this product. Thought it would be too heavy for my fine hair. Decided to try it when I read it was glycerin-free. I love it. I use it as a leave-in from my ends up to midway. Does a great job detangling. Greatly appreciate the directions provided for both thick, coarse curls and loose wavy curls! Works well with styling products Jane Carter Solution Curl Defining Cream and Jessicurl Spiralicious.

Zaklove (Type 4b”> says: A lot of people complain about it not moisturizing their hair or leaving their hair frizz ect. This product is NOT a moisturizer or for styling by itself! It’s specifically for detangling and being a leave-in. I have very (4b-4c”> kinky hair and this product works perfect for me. I usually mix it with water, aloe vera juice, and oil, and this product is able to last me almost a year. After detangling with this product, I usually apply my moisturizer (SheaMoisture”> and a very light gel for styling.

Elucence Moisture Benefits Shampoo (136 reviews”>

Hbstuff11 (Type 2c”> says: This shampoo is great! Leaves my hair super soft to the touch and easier to manage than a lot of other shampoos I’ve tried. The smell is wonderful, although by the time I apply conditioner and rinse that out, the smell of the shampoo is gone. Overall great product and worth the buy!

Harvey322 (Type 4c”> says: I love this shampoo! I brought it for my daughter’s hair and it made her hair feel so smooth and nice, not plasticky feeling like other shampoos! And the smell is amazing!

SeasideCurls (Type 3b”> says: This is the only shampoo I have found that doesn’t completely strip my hair of and turn it to straw. It has a nice peachy smell that doesn’t overpower you and isn’t a fake/sugary peach smell. A small amount will go a long way in my hair. Suds a little, so I still feel like I’m getting a good clean.

As I Am Coconut Cowash (285 reviews”>

Naturallydlang3 (Type 4a”> says: This is a great co-wash…if that’s all your looking to do not a good cleaning after a protective style this is just for a weekly co-wash. It’s gentle and a pleasant smell. It gives you the clean feeling without the harsh stripping feel. It is a fair price but it goes extremely fast. The only thing I don’t like is it comes in the jar. I feel like it needs a pump or to be in a bottle to squeeze out.

Stacy.bobo (Type 3a”> says: After a disastrous trip to the salon I was beside myself. I had dry, frizzy, thin hair that appeared to have lost its curl pattern. It was suggested by a store clerk at a beauty supply store that I try this product for she had great success with it. I felt I had nothing to lose and grabbed a tub. To my utter amazement it did what nothing else could. Now as I grow out my curls it’s the only product line I own. I’ve even tried the leave-in conditioner and fell in love with that as well..this line rescued my hair and gave me back hope!..Thank you so much.

Astrgar (Type 2c”> says: Really nice cleansing co-wash. Does an excellent job at keeping my dry-prone 2C/3A hair moisturized and clean. Can cut through the grime of most products. The scent isn’t the greatest but it does the job and doesn’t break the bank.

Curl Junkie Curl Rehab Moisturizing Hair Treatment (220 reviews”>

Stinalee201120 (Type 4a”> says: Wow! This hair treatment is awesome. I always thought I got great results using any conditioner with honey and oil added, but I was wrong! Curl Rehab is just what I have been looking for in a deep conditioner. It’s thick and cream, it has great slip and just glides through my hair. My hair feels extremely soft and hydrated. The price is on the steep side, but I think the money is well spent.

Curlyfabs (Type 3a”> says: Love the gardenia/coconut scent. I did a henna gloss treatment which left my hair feeling like hay but after putting some of this stuff my hair was soft. This stuff is worth your buck!

Clibbylou (Type 4c”> says: Great product, very moisturizing and has a lot of slip. This conditioner really softened my hair after a henna treatment. I will definitely repurchase.

Curl Junkie Curls in a Bottle (147 reviews”>

Colsgirl (Type 4b”> says: I have 4a/b, tiny, tightly coiled hair (plus frizz!”>, and while Curls in a Bottle is way too light as a stand alone styler for me, it is great as a leave-in conditioner/styling product base for my wash and go’s. It makes my styling gel work better! Traditional creme leave-in conditioners (even the light ones”> just sit on my hair and are terrible under gel for my wash and go’s. But, Curls in a Bottle is great underneath any of my styling gels. It’s clear and watery but has decent slip and light hold. A little goes a long way. It does a great job of decreasing frizz and the ‘gel crunch’, and helps to elongate my ‘shrink all the time’ coils. Also contributes to shine and bonus, no flakes! I love it and would recommend this as a styling gel reinforcer! Naitokaze (Type 2b”> says: I really like this stuff. Finally found a curl serum that I am not allergic to! I gave it 4/5 stars because the smell is a little…off. It is a little sickly sweet plus wet dog smell. This goes away once it dries though. I do have to use this with a leave-in for moisture and a little bit of gel for hold and definition. This solution helps to eliminate frizz and makes my hair a little shinier and more manageable overall. I smooth this on damp hair after a leave-in conditioner and before gel, I use Curl Queen from this brand. I then do my best not to touch or disturb my hair until it dries!

Kbonapar (Type 2c”> says: I really loved how this defined my curls/waves and made them shiny while keeping them very soft. Unfortunately this only works on my first day hair (right after washing it”>. I usually only wash my hair about twice a week, but with Curls in a Bottle my hair starts feeling sticky, limp, and tangled starting the second day and doesn’t get better after that 🙁 Really sad it only works for one day. I probably will not be repurchasing since I don’t want to start washing my hair everyday.

Oyin Handmade Hair Dew (202 reviews”>

Uaneto (Type 4c”> says: “Great product, leaves my hair moisturized for days. I usually use this in conjunction with the Oyin Burnt Sugar Pomade…great stuff!”  Hurricanedani (Type 3b”> says: This is a great moisturizer. I use it on my hair and my daughter’s when I am doing the LOC method. I love the smell, but my 3 year old hates it.

Editor CristinaC (Type 2c”> says: This product is probably too heavy for my 2c hair normally, but right now my hair is so damaged from bleaching it that heavier, moisturizing products are working for me lately. If you have fine or wavy hair I would say use a very small amount. Overall, very moisturizing product and love the ingredients.

Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner (239″>

Kfoley228 (Type 2b”> says: Excellent conditioner for after co-washing and as a leave-in. My 2b/2c hair really loves this. As a leave-in a little goes a long way. Lynnell (Type 4a”> says: This is my second time purchasing Elucence Moisture Balance Conditioner. I love everything about this conditioner, the way it smells, how soft it leaves my hair, and how moisturized it is after I use it.

Sheree (Type 3b”> says: This conditioner provides so much moisture and slip while shampooing, the detangling process was much easier , the foaming action that’s created after mixing with H2O while on hair adds extra hydration to the hair leaving it soft, curly, moisturized and detangled. Ready for styling.

Camille Rose Naturals Coconut Water Penetrating Hair Treatment (13″>

Jacquid (Type 4a”> says: Staple item for me. My hair LOVES this product. With this and As I Am Coconut Cowash, my coils are defined and elongated and there’s no frizz issue. My hair is an addict for this! Only issue I have is that it’s an 8 oz. container. Would like a larger size but it’s well worth the price.

Cleansethebody (Type 3c”> says: Only used it once so far but I had wanted to find a better DC than what I was using in the past. I used all different types all different brands and this one came out on top. This bad boy had my hair feeling amazing. Very thick but once it saturated into my hair and was on for about 30 min. (with heat”> I could finger detangle my hair so well. Loved it, definitely a keeper.

Tvigne (Type 3b”> says: This is a great product! Love it. Smells great and leaves my hair soft but not heavy like some other deep conditioners. I used the kinky custard after and I don’t know which one helped with the frizz but it works perfectly.

Curl Junkie Curl Assurance Smoothing Lotion (134 reviews”>

Mimisl27 (Type 4b”> says: Great product with slip. Makes my hair pillow soft and very moisturizing. I’m on the fence about this product because it has propylene glycol in it. I will finish the 2 bottles I have and probably won’t repurchase.

Fancyotaku (Type 4a”> says: My profile says 4a, but I’m actually a low porosity high density coarse 3c. And this stuff is AWESOME!! I couldn’t stop touching my hair. It felt like I had a soft fluffy cloud on my head. This is now my staple leave in.

Editor Susonnahg (Type 2b”> says: This is awesome. Smoothes out flyaways and smells great. And cone free.

Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Cleansing Cowash (52 reviews”>

CurlyMimi (Type 3b”> says: This product is the bomb. After one use it made my hair much silkier. Definitely repurchasing.

lwhitman (Type 4b”> says: I just tried the Eden Co wash Cleanser last night and I absolutely love it! My hair was so soft and manageable after the wash. I will purchase again. Thank you Eden.

Curlyburgher (Type 4a”> says: This product is one of the best co wash I’ve used. A little goes a long way and it leaves my hair clean and easy to manage. It’s a shame I live in the UK and it is not sold here! Good product!

How to Get Big Sexy Hair… Without Frizz

Big is the new long when it comes to hair. Curlies, coilies, and wavies are becoming more interested in fullness than length. A lot of people with fine, low density, and looser-textured hair desire to hide their scalps and keep their roots lifted. Jana.muzevic from Curly Q&A recently reached out to us about this.

Question

I have type 3b. How do I get more volume without too much frizz? I use a diffuser! :”> thanks x

Answer

First, I want to acknowledge the fine job that Brazilnutt did responding to this question and I will be sharing very similar tips.

Thoroughly Cleanse Hair and Scalp

Buildup from products, sebum, and debris can be adding additional weight to your hair. If you co-wash, you may want to start cleansing with a sulfate-free shampoo (focusing on your scalp”> to ensure that buildup is properly removed. Co-washing is great as a refresher, but daily conditioners are not formulated to cleanse the hair and therefore are not always effective cleansers even though some can be. Co-wash conditioners are formulated with milder surfactants than shampoos but sometimes they too are ineffective. Clean hair and lighter products lead to fluffier hair.

Read more: You Need to Clarify: Signs that Co-washing is Not Enough

Try Different Styling Products

There are so many product options for curlies these days. There are mousses, gels, cream gels, and styling creams (i.e. creams, pudding, and custards”>. Brand websites and/or product labels will give directions either explicitly (i.e. wavy”> or implicitly through the instructions on who the products are designed for. Many with fine, low density, waves and curls will opt for mousses and styling creams over cream gels and gels. There are lighter and heavier products available in each styler category so it is important to not only read the instruction but also search YouTube tutorials.

Do Not Apply Product to Scalp

When applying styling products to your hair, make sure you avoid the scalp. Although your roots are more prone to frizz without products, not applying products to the scalp will allow your roots to naturally rise as your hair dries.

Use Double Prong Hair Clips

Securing your roots with double prong clips immediately after applying your styling product will allow your curls to set with volume while the length of your hair sets with definition. Devachan Salon has great tutorials on how to achieve defined curls and lifted roots without frizz.

Drying Upside Down

Drying your hair upside down allows roots to set with volume. Using a blow-dryer on low speed and cool air with a diffuser attachment will prevent your hair from becoming frizzy from the air pressure and becoming dry from the high heat. When used in conjunction with the double prong hair clips, you can maintain curl definition and create volume. Here is another video from the Devachan Salon to demonstrate how this is done.

Afro Pick

If you want even more volume or choose to not use the double prong clips then using an afro pick to lift your roots is another fantastic option. Once your hair is completely dry, carefully separate sections to expose the roots and use the afro pick to lift the roots. The key to avoiding frizz is to not comb all the way down the length of your hair. You want to focus on your roots.

6 Tips for Deep Conditioning Your Coils
young lady smiling with bare shoulders and coily hair

Deep conditioning is an essential element in which coily hair thrives. Coily hair requires enriched moisture reinforcements due to its high potential to experience dryness. Because the circumference of coily hair is smaller than that of curly hair, the sebum from your scalp takes longer to travel down the hair shaft. Since sebum takes forever to get from roots to ends, you need to take measures to avoid dryness and breakage. Deep conditioners are filled with proteins, lubricants and oils to help your hair maintain elasticity, prevent breakage and restore strength. Here are six top tips for deep conditioning and washing your coils.

1. All natural conditioner

Deep conditioning is the time to rejuvinate your hair from manipulation and weather elements. Selecting a deep conditioner that is free of non-soluble silicones, non-permeable oils and drying alcohols will allow your hair to absorb more nutrients and decrease the rate of product build-up. No one wants to wash their hair just to experience dryness two days later. Natural conditioners are the best route to prevent decreasing your strand’s absorption capacity.

2. Behentrimonium chloride

This cationic surfactant is an awesome lubricant that helps to give your hair slip as you detangle. Coily hair is bound to become interwine, especially when activated with water. The last thing you want is to be excited for wash day, hop in the shower, run water on your hair and apply a conditioner that doesn’t have any slip. That’s the formula to an extremely matted mess! Slip is a must. Behentrimonium chloride provides slip that is equally effective as silicones minus the product build-up.

3. Penetrating oils

Avocado oil, coconut oil and olive oil are three oils that penetrate the hair shaft and reach the cortex. Because coily hair has a tendency to dry out, oils help to slow down the rate of moisture loss.

Lady with an afro smiling and wearing a blue one shoulder blouse

4. Hydrolized proteins

Hydrolized proteins are proteins that have been altered to seap into the cuticle and fill in the cortex. They help coily hair to regain strength from daily wear and tear by replacing proteins that are lost through manipulation. CurlyNikki’s Finding Your Perfect Deep Conditioner – The Ultimate Guide is a great reference for a list of hydrolized proteins and more information.

5. Use heat

Deep conditioning with a processing cap under a hooded dryer for a minimum of 15 minutes is just devine. It is possible for your hair to absorb nutrients from conditioners without confined heat, but it will take longer. Not only does using heat expand the hair shaft to give the conditioner more access to seap through, but it also helps certain ingredients bond to the cuticle.

6. Cool water

Rinsing your hair with cool water after deep conditioning helps to close the cuticle. By rinsing with warm water, you re-open the hair shaft and possibly lose nutrients that were just put into the hair.

Whenever moisturizing and sealing don’t work and your hair keeps laughing at your co-wash conditioner, it’s probably time to deep condition. Your hair thrives when it starts with a good foundation. A great analogy is your body’s need for hydration. To some, a Coke sounds great on a hot summer day, but the body is not truly hydrated without water. Your hair is the same. Product build-up and synthetic ingredients are like that false sense of hydration. You keep drinking looking to quench that thirst until you finally drink water. Deep condition your coils with the best of the best and you will definitely see a difference.
