Buyer’s Remorse: Why Do Our Favorite Brands Keep Failing Us?

GAP, Inc. and I have been in a long-term relationship for roughly twenty-five years. That’s right. We’ve been going together because I needed understanding during my grungy jeans-to-solid colors only development phases. GAP understood me on such a deep level that, yes, I fell into it. My young heart belonged to the parade of high cheekbones, sinewy arms, white tank tops, terry cloth crew necks, dewy skin, sans-jewelry throats and fingers, and devil-may-care mussed hair.

And, because I was an adolescent without a dime to my name, I couldn’t afford anything on offer to me, but my oh my how I wanted their clothes and accessories in my life.

We were perfect for each other! We liked the same things: well-worn denim, black and white photography and videography, minimal aesthetics, and LL Cool J.

Oh, GAP! I felt an unflinching desperation for something I could not have; for the first time, I felt desire! But why? Why did I feel this pull? Why did I want to wear nothing but the GAP brand every day of my teenage life? Because I never felt shut out or misunderstood by GAP, this constant force that I was always invited to fall into. And from those years of singing and rapping and dazzling me with ad campaigns that lit up the ‘gimme more’ lobe of my brain, I have been under the spell of GAP’s siren song ever since.

Even though our relationship bordered on unhealthy obsession, I still love GAP. And even though my boo has been in hot water for past ad campaigns, responsibility has been taken by its #squad.

There’s nothing I can do about my affection for GAP. We’re in a committed relationship and I’m happy.

Wow, G. You really love The GAP, huh?

Yep, and you must think I’m crazy, but why?

Think about it: What brand or car or Netflix series can you not live without? Even if you don’t want to admit it, you do have a favorite and you’ll do anything to get and keep it in your life.

And, I am here to tell you that it’s perfectly fine.

We’re consumers. It’s how we respond to the things which we consume.

Advertisers know this so, why are they getting the messaging so wrong?

Dove ad black woman white woman
Yikes!, image capture from @NayTheMua

Well, I have a theory about this…

Advertisers and brands have forgotten how to “woo” us. They don’t know what we want, anymore. Which is odd to me, but I theorize that it’s because they are following our social media focus, and not trying to win our hearts. There are some that are getting it right like Hamburger Helper and Cheerios, but there are some that are disinterested in tapping into our desires and values, forsaking us for a viral hit.

While trying to enter into conversations about race and gender and body image and all the things that have the potential to go viral, ad campaigns are going haywire by trying to cater to every single nuance of the human experience.

Newsflash, advertisers: You cannot be the representative of every narrative. What you can do is be real. And, yes, advertiser – this next part is for you :”>

NC Editor Cristina Cleveland told me, “I appreciate when brands align themselves with the kinds of real women I aspire to be. For me personally, that means women who are following their own path when it comes to career, doing interesting, meaningful work, and women who have unique and creative ways of expressing their personal style. It goes beyond just picking a model that has my skin tone or looks like me.”

Yassss, Covergirl! (Read the story on PopSugar“>

“I think Covergirl’s been doing a good job of this in their recent rebranding. Their new tagline “I am what I make up” speaks to this idea of using makeup as a creative tool in a way that’s personal to you. I haven’t started using Covergirl products, but I still appreciate it!”

Nowadays, Honesty is King.

Consumers like honesty because we want to trust brands that improve and enhance our quality of life. When consumers choose a product or service that fits their needs, they are entering into a relationship with the brand, potentially committing themselves for life. Hence my devotion to GAP.

When brands decide to cast a “1M fish in the sea” net to catch us all, just to see who will stick around, it is disingenuous, and, baby, we know it.

We know that you’ve reached the “selective hearing” stage of the relationship. We can tell that you have a wandering eye. We’ve been there. We’ve done that. We’ve broken up with so many brands, you’d probably think this post is about you.

So, where do we go from here?

Consumers Like Building Relationships with Brands.

As with any relationship, no one wants to be told who or what to be. This, I believe, is the most obvious failing of so many ad campaigns: dictating to the consumer who and what she needs to be in order for this product/service/relationship to work.

Representation matters, but assuming you understand me because a pixelated spec in a demographic slice on a digital pie chart is the supposed encapsulation of my human experience will cause an unanticipated backlash. You don’t own me.

So, why don’t you just talk to me? Get to know me, maybe? Ask me some questions because I have soooo many for you:

Do you know what my experience is? Let me answer that for you: You do not… so, why don’t you tell me a little something about yourself so I can see if I want to hang around a little longer? What makes you tick? Oh, you like that, too?! You’ve been doing this for how long? Where can I get what you’re selling, because I’m totes into it?

Loving this conversation between Cher and Future!

Consumers are actual humans; your advertising should be “human,” too.

“I love a great story,” entrepreneur and NC Editor Alexandra Wilson told me, “We are bombarded with so much information on a daily basis so for something to grab my attention and resonate it has to be relatable, heartfelt and entertaining. Most importantly, it should accurately represent the people portrayed in the commercial.”

We are not black vs. red lines. We are remarkable human beings; so, acknowledge it by showing us how you see us. We want to hear our voices and see ourselves through your eyes. If you continue to do this, showing us that you understand and you know us, don’t you know we won’t leave? That’s how this relationship works.

We’re giving you loyalty and feedback (even when you don’t want to hear it”>. Great products and confidence in our choice to stick with you is all we want in return.

We’re giving you loyalty and feedback (even when you don’t want hear it”>. Great products and confidence in our choice to stick with you is all we want in return.

So why do we get upset when you overlook or outright ignore the aforementioned simple demands?

Because No One Wants to Experience Buyer’s Remorse.

That’s right. We don’t want to break up with you because down line, we’re just not a good fit.

So, please remember, that when a consumer purchases your goods and services, you are entering into a relationship with her, so you’d better treat her right.

GAP, you know I love you, boo – thank you for keeping me entertained, intrigued, and wrapped in the softest cotton hard earned dollars can buy for a reasonable price.

Hydrating your Curls with Design Essentials Naturals is a WIN! WIN!

Hydration is a major focus for us at NaturallyCurly. So much, in fact, that I have scoured the internet to figure out just what in the world will keep dry, curly hair hydrated all year long so you won’t have to! After all my searching and testing, I can tell you with complete confidence that keeping curls hydrated in cooler temperatures is doable.

Being the curl nerd I am, I wanted to test Design Essentials Naturals products via an updated version of my wash day routine.

So, a hydration experiment ensued.

5 items from the Design Essentials Natural Coconut & Monoi collection for curly and coily hair

Photo retrieved from @designessentials

I hypothesized that if I changed my regular wash day routine with hydration-centric steps, I would be able to keep my curls hydrated, free from breakage, and primed for styling.

I followed these steps for a week before getting a protective style.

My selfie game is getting as strong as my ‘fro – @gerilynhayes

Yes, that’s my super hydrated Afro. Keep reading to find out how I took care of my curls to pull this style off.

Here are the steps I upgraded my wash day routine with:

Hydrating Curls: My Step-by-Step Process

1″> Oil the scalp via the pre-poo method – Since shampooing can strip the scalp of sebum, or naturally occurring oils, I wanted to make sure that my scalp would be able to absorb and retain all the hair superfood I was about to feed it. Because the plan was to use the Design Essentials Natural Coconut & Monoi Coconut Milk Nourishing Shampoo, I chose coconut oil as my pre-poo.

Haven’t pre-pooed before? It’s simple: depending on your curl density and length, make several sections of hair and then twist each section. At this point, you will want to unravel the sections, one by one, and apply your oil to your scalp and hair, firmly sliding your fingers from roots to ends. Make sure you retwist the moisturized section of hair and move to the next section until you’re done. Next, grab a shower cap to cover those sections, and take about 20-30 minutes of much-needed chill time. Then, move on to the next step: shampooing!

2″> Cleanse scalp with a gentle shampoo – Feeling good about the pre-poo method, I moved on to shampooing. My recommendation, especially to those of you with dry curls that only seem hydrated for a few hours, is to shampoo with a gentle cleanser. If you need to wash your hair twice to ensure that every curl is free and clear of product buildup and scalp debris, go for it! Keep in mind that you will need to reintroduce balance back to your hair strands post-shampooing which takes us to the third step in the updated regimen.

3″> Condition, post-shampooing, twice a week – Having a tried and true washout conditioners for your curls is a must, my curl friend. Depending on your curls’ needs, apply a deep conditioner, a hair mask like Coconut & Monoi Deep Moisture Masque, or a specific treatment for scalp and hair issues you may have. Basically, if you do not condition your hair, you will not be able to properly seal your curly hair strands with the oils and goodies it needs to retain hydration. It’s just that simple.

4″> Trust the leave-in conditioner – No matter what texture type or curl pattern you have, I will always encourage you to use leave-in conditioners. For this experiment, I used the Coconut & Monoi Coconut Milk Leave-In Nourisher which further confirmed my theory about these hydration-centric steps: you have to add and retain hydrating formulas on a regular basis to keep your curls in peak form!

After completing my hydrating steps, I wanted to benefit all of that hard work by styling my hair into Bantu Knots before getting box braids. You know that I’ve been a fan of the Coconut & Monoi Curl Defining Gelee since day 1, so of course, I reached for it. I knew that the hold would be perfect for at least a couple of days, and when taking down the knots, I wouldn’t experience dried out hair strands or breakage. You also know that I’m extra when it comes to stylin’ and profilin’ online. That’s why I chose the Coconut & Monoi Moisturizing Edge Control Glaze to capitalize on my 2 days of cute, hydrated curls because I like to complete my Bantus by showing off these baby hairs… NBD.

So, what did I learn from all of this?

I learned that products are designed to keep our naturally curly hair and scalp moisturized and hydrated in cooler, drier temperatures need to be used regularly. There’s no magical timeline; you have to find what works best for your curls. In the end, you have to put in the work to get the hydration you need. It takes time, but it is worth it for those Insta-slammin’ selfies you’ll be taking this Fall!

Want to try this method with the products I used? Great!

Beauty. Style. Grace.

All of these things and more are attributed to the artist, master stylist, and all-around amazing woman Diane C. Bailey. She is the visionary behind the SheaMoisture Braid Revv-oultion that rocked the runway at Texture on the Runway during NYFW 2017. Bailey and her team of hair stylists and hair sculpture artists blended hair styles from the past and present to create dazzling, fashionable future styles.

There was audible excitement as the looks catwalked their way into our reality, shining a light on history and our contemporary times. Wanting to delve into the creative mind of the head and heart behind the Braid Revv-olution, I reached out the master stylist herself to learn what we could expect to see on the runway.

Exclusive: Interview with Master Stylist Diane C. Bailey

Gerilyn Hayes: Every year, brands select themes to showcase on the runway. What inspired the SheaMoisture theme and aesthetic for this year’s event?

Diane C. Bailey: SheaMoisture’s inspiration comes from our relationship with its community. The SheaMoisture Braid Revv-olution is the combined expression of traditional hairstyles, braided accents, and urban street influences, reimagined with an avant-garde edge. SheaMoisture is taking the natural hair community and the fashion sector on a voyage with a heightened declaration of traditional styles.

GH: How are you communicating that theme through the hairstyles, beauty, and fashion looks on the runway?

DCB: Braid Revv-olution features braiding accents on styles that have a retro perspective from the 20’s, the 60’s and the exotic future. No conventional looks! SheaMoisture is raising the bar with braided beauty. These styles are progressive, ornate and forward-looking with touches of fantasy. This is coupled with clean lines and neutral colors in the spirit of New York’s current hip-hop infused streetwear designs.

GH: SheaMoisture continues to lead the natural hair industry by offering multiple product collections to the textured consumer. With a limitless selection of SheaMoisture products at your fingertips, how do you choose which collection is best for a particular style?

DCB: Yes, SheaMoisture has hair products for every hair texture, hair type, and condition. There are no cookie cutter solutions. Women have the opportunity to select the perfect products based on their individual texture and the finished style.

GH: Brand owners have a perpetual need to innovate with the goal of outpacing other brands in the market. How does your team of product creators and stylists stay ahead of the curve?

DCB: My team of stylists and the SheaMoisture innovation, marketing, and creative teams stay ahead of the curve by being the “curve”. Not waiting for the trends to change, but by being masters of change. Being open to research, industry discussions and trying new techniques, we are always growing. And, always talking to their community on what their needs are, and what moves them.

GH: Which collection(s”> are you using to achieve these looks?

DCB: This is a celebration of natural textures in classic styles and SheaMoisture has collections that work to bring out the best in the range of textures you will see tonight. The five Braid Revv-olution styles feature Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie to define texture, Raw Shea Butter Heatless Curl Stretch to elongate curls, Jamaican Black Castor Strengthen & Restore Oil Loc & Braid Butter to define and moisturize, new Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Blow Dry Crème to create manageability and protect hair from heat styling, and 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Leave-In Conditioner to nourish and detangle.

GH: At NaturallyCurly, we believe that representations of texture and curls are imperative to our community. Why do you think it is important to have texture represented on the runway, mass media, and entertainment?

DCB: It’s important to have textured hair reflected on the runway and in the world in general because all hair, all people are beautiful and must be valued, respected and not minimized or ignored because they do not fit into a bias prescription of beauty. “Hair diversity” and “Hair Inclusion” are about hair textures of  all types that must be reflected in all that we do. We believe that it’s vital that she be affirmed with hair textured and styles, using products that address her needs and styling options. All hair is good hair and deserves to be elevated, including at New York Fashion Week!

Have you hit the product plateau? Your hair width may be to blame!

No matter if you are currently transitioning from relaxed hair to curls, discovering that your curls become waves when they grow past your shoulders, or have been coily and proud of it for decades, you know what it feels like to find your one true love: the “This one is my favorite” product.

You’ve told your friends, your mom, your play-aunties, and your coworkers about this life-saving oil, shampoo, butter cream… whatever it is, you announced your relationship with this favorite to the world because you don’t care who knows how much you’re all about your curly hair bae.

TFW you come to slay (thanks to your fav product”>. Image via GIPHY.

Then, one day… just like that… your bae, your everything you’ve ever wanted in a curly hair product fails you.

It leaves your curls high and dry. You consider collecting your broken hearted tears in an almost empty tub of the fav so you can attempt to mix its remnants with the hopes of it working again. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you saw it coming: True love’s kiss and tears aren’t gonna work when your product up and dies on you.

But it is fair to wonder:

We had a good thing going on… WTH HAPPENED?

Fact: You hair width plays a big role in product efficacy. | istock/drbimages

Well, curl friend you’ve just hit a product plateau. Why? Just like porosity is a major factor when purchasing products, hair width will impact the type of products you need throughout the course of the hair growth cycle and how you practice general curl maintenance. For instance, if you’re over-applying your fav moisturizer on type 3 ringlets, it might be because you do not know your curls are fine and cannot handle too much moisture. Or if you are using defining gel on your type 4 coils, and end up with mega crunchy hair at the day’s end, you may need to use a cream-based gel to keep your coarse coils moisturized.

There are many possibilities, but let’s start with learning about what hair width means to you.

First of all, hair width is the key determinant when texture typing. The width, or thickness, of your hair strands, determines whether you have fine, medium, or coarse curls. Because I know that you want to determine your hair width right, or to see if you’ve been on the right path all along, I sourced NaturallyCurly to help you:

To find your hair width, take a piece of your hair from a brush or comb and hold it up to the light. If the hair is very wide and easily visible, then you have coarse hair. If it’s so thin that you can hardly see it, you have fine hair. If your hair appears neither thin nor coarse, you have medium width hair. –NaturallyCurly.com

Now that you know what your curls are working with, let’s take a look at what width means for your next product shopping trip!

FINE

Because these hair strands have the smallest circumference of the texture types (meaning that when held up to the light, you can barely see it”>, fine hair is prone to all kinds of damage. This makes length difficult to achieve and maintain. No need to worry, though! Apply a deep conditioner to your curls post-wash. I recommend ApHogee Curlific! Texture Treatment and The Mane Choice Green Tea & Carrot Deep Strengthening & Restorative Mask Treatment for fine hair. And don’t use too much or too often; let those curls breathe!

MEDIUM

Yes, you do have the best of both worlds. Your curls are bouncy, strong, and capable to retaining length. Lucky you, boo! Keep your curls is top shape with leave-in conditioners that help prevent damage. Some of the best I’ve seen and used include SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Extra-Moisture Detangler and Mielle Organics White Peony Leave-In Conditioner (which is also great to spray on protective styles“>.

COARSE

Got wide hair strands? Congrats! You have super strong texture, and will be able to retain length as your curly hair grows. You will need to apply heavy products to your hair. According to NaturallyCurly Editor Amanda N., “When using products that are too light, you might not be able to retain moisture for an extended period of time. If you are applying moisturizer every day, then you may want to consider using thicker products that you will have to apply less frequently.” For general maintenance, I recommend hair butters and creams like Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil Natural Curly Styling Custard or Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils Curl La La Defining Curl Custard to help you get the moisture you need.

Activism Row at Afropunk Fest in Brooklyn Inspires Attendees

Whenever I hear, “Brooklyn stand up,” I know that the sentiment in the phrase is spoken, exclaimed, sung, rapped with an emphasis on truth. Never had I experienced it firsthand until I attended Afropunk-Brooklyn 2017 and walked up and down Activism Row.

http://afropunkfest.com/brooklyn/activities/activism-row/

As a fan of punk music, my attempt to follow its ethos is marked by my passion for volunteer work and community action. Much of my personal time is dedicated to not only creating music but to serving my community. So when I saw several yards of activists, community-centric organizations, and Afropunk attendees learning about them, I had a quiet riot in my soul.

It was a perfect combination of old school punk meets new wave cultural bull horning. I loved every second of it!

Listed below are just a few of the organizations I saw and learned about during Afropunk Fest-Brooklyn. I encourage you to learn about these organizations and find local chapters in your area to get active in your community.

  • AIDS Healthcare Foundation: The presence of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation at the fest was powerful. This is because, despite scores of research that informs medical professionals about prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, communities around the world continue to contract and suffer from this disease. To see people getting information about prevention and on-the-spot HIV status testing at the festival was remarkable. Do you know your status?
  • Black Lives Matter – NYC: The most powerful and vocal organizations in the world cannot hold a candle to BLM. I saw groups upon groups of concert goers gathering information about the movement, civil rights, justice for systemic injustices… it was a remarkable sight. One I won’t soon forget. To learn about getting involved in a local chapter, click here.
  • Habitat for Humanity – New York City: If you build it, they will come. And they, meaning community members, will nurture the land and make it fruitful. I am also here for Habitat for Humanity and will never leave. So, to see them representing for communities in NYC was fantastic. Having volunteered with this organization in Austin, TX, I know that the communities throughout the States are 100% benefiting from their action. Find a Chapter in your area!

Other organizations on Activism Row that caught my eye included Lady Parts Justice Leauge (LOVED those temporary tattoos”>, Brooklyn March Against Gentrification Racism and Police Violence, HeadCount, and Color of Change.

Although some of the organizations present were NY/Brooklyn-specific, I took a few notes from them to help my Austin community.

This DIY, community-based work, that gets overlooked on a regular basis, is part of the punk ethos and I, for one, am dedicated to it.

It is inspiring to me as a member of the punk community at large and as a world citizen.

Thank you, Afropunk Fest-Brooklyn for offering all of us a chance to get involved with these incredible forces for change. I am so grateful to have been in attendance and apart of a movement that has rocked me since 2003.

In addition to learning more about the organizations on Activism Row, watch the trailer for the documentary that birthed it all:

2 Cool Back-to-School Styles for Curly Hair

The summertime break is coming to an end.

That does not mean that your protective and summertime-fine hairstyles have to! Switch up your look for the new school year with 2 campus-cool hairstyles you will want to rock all semester long:

Fingercoils

Braided Flat Twist Out

These 2 cute, versatile, and easy to maintain styles for Type 3 and Type 4 curlies who want trendy hairstyling options for those first few days and weeks on campus. To get these looks, we asked the Aunt Jackie’s Curls and Coils team what the best moisture-packed styling options would be for your hair type.

Here is what we learned:

  1. For easy styling, you must eliminate knotted curls – No matter which of the 2 styles you choose, use Aunt Jackie’s Knot on my Watch Instant Detangling Therapy as a base for each style. The shea butter and olive oil enriched detangler is easy to apply on dry or damp curls. For best results, use either your fingers or a wide tooth comb to coat every hair strand with detangler.

  2. Define curls and straggly ends with a custard – To gain long-lasting curl definition, use Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La Defining Curl Custard. The custard can be applied to detangled, wet (or dry”> curls. Perfect for Fingercoils, this custard sets styled curls when air dried, when using a diffuser, or a hood dryer. Moisturizers cocoa butter and shea butter keep curls from feeling crunchy after the style is set with heat.

  3. Use a non-crunching, lightweight gel to retain elongationAunt Jackie’s Don’t Shrink Elongating Flaxseed Gel will hold stretched styles like Braided Flat Twist Outs for days. The gel uses Omega fatty acids, Vitamin E, and flaxseed oil to help hair stay thoroughly moisturized. For those of us intimidated by the prospect of traction alopecia when considering a protective style like cornrows, we can rest assured with the knowledge that flaxseed nourishes hair follicles and acts against hair thinning.

See how well these steps work in the video!

Don’t worry if you cannot complete these styles on your own!

You can achieve either look by finding a curly and textured hair stylist near your campus or the area in which she has been spending her summer break. Find one today by using the NaturallyCurly Salon Finder.

Dustin Brown Won our Hearts at Wimbledon 2017

I know, I know… you’re asking yourself how you’ve never seen this dreadlocked pro-tennis player before?

And, even if you have, you may be surprised to learn that the Jamaican-German pro-athlete has been turning heads on the tennis courts for over a decade.

Why? you may ask…

The reason is simple:

Dustin Brown has been sporting the most EPIC dreadlocks on any tennis court, anywhere in the entire world.

Fortunately for all of us curly, coily, wavy, and loc enthusiasts, we get to watch Brown’s sweet serves, volleys, and general awesomeness during this last weekend of Wimbledon.

Now, if you are like me, the last time you watched a professional tennis match was when Serena and Venus Williams were just slaying the game, left and right, upwards and downwards, horizontally and vertically, with no end in sight. I mean, just pure and utter dominance of the game, you know? How could I and other I’m-only-here-for-the-sisters fans possibly be gifted with more #blackexcellence on the court?

When I tell you I squealed with delight at the sight of Dustin Brown’s high-flying, past-the-hip length locs, it was more of a guttural exclamation that erupted from the depths of my soul. I was PUMPED. And I just had to tell you about it not only because Brown is a remarkable talent, but because his hair is causing people to lose their minds… seriously.

Let a player play!

In addition to Brown being an exceptional professional athlete, his dreadlocks are the subject of much debate in the pro-tennis community. Here are just a few talking points swirling about the internet and streaming channels:

  • Will the weight of Brown’s dreadlocks impact his performance?
  • Are opponents distracted by all that hair?
  • How often does Brown wash his dreadlocks, if at all?
  • Will Brown cut his dreadlocks at some point during his career?

Wooooow…

As these questions spill with reckless abandon out of the mouths of commentators, sports journalists, and other interested parties, I would say to all of them when answering the aforementioned questions: Pay attention to the game, not on fetishizing the man’s hair.
We all can and should appreciate those epic tendrils of glory, but do not focus on them so much that you miss what is so great about them: they sitting atop the head of one of the best tennis players in the game right now.

Even though Brown will not be advancing to the finals this year, I still want to follow his career. Will you?

As ever, stay curly and loc’d!

Oh, wait!

You can’t just leave this article without experiencing the power of Dustin Brown’s glow… watch this compilation video, created by Wimbledon, of the man in action!

Does hair cuticle behavior impact product efficacy?

It is easy to place blame on curly and textured hair care products for myriad reasons, such as:

istock.com/pixdeluxe
  • Disgusting chemicals are in them.
  • The formulas have changed since the 2002 launch of the line.
  • Too light, too thin consistency fails textured curls.
  • The label says it is for fine hair, but it builds up.

The list can go on and on… so what is a curly to do?

The answer is clear: understand how hair works, starting with the cuticle!

Here is the lowdown on hair cuticle behavior:

In order to understand your hair cuticle behavior, you must first understand the hair strand, or hair fiber, structure.

Henry Vandyke Carter – Henry Gray (1918″> Anatomy of the Human Body

The hair fiber consists of 3 layers that ultimately impact your overall curl health and appearance:

  1. The cuticle is the focus of this article. Sheathed in overlapping flat, thin cellular layers, the hair cuticle is as delicate as it is strong. It does not open. It does not close. However, its outer layer can be raised (with water and some shampoos”> and be smoothed back down (with conditioners and oils”>.

  2. The cortex is the superstar of the hair fiber because it contains cell structures that house coveted keratin. It is enveloped by the cuticle. It is the largest part of the hair fiber which makes it a pretty big deal. It is important to take care of its barrier, the cuticle, which is why selecting the right product for your curls is imperative.

  3. The medulla is a chaotic kaleidoscope of matter and open space at the center of the hair fiber. Although it is there, doing its own thing, you do not need to concern yourself with the medulla. Let it have its pretty name and move on.

So, does hair cuticle behavior impact product efficacy?

Well, yeah – it does!

Sure, this is a hard pill to swallow because maybe it is not the product causing the problem of dry, undefined curls.

Maybe, just maybe, it is you.

via GIPHY

More specifically, it may be the products you are choosing are adversely impacting your hair cuticle behavior and health.

Acknowledging that a closer look at your hair can help you make better textured and curly hair care product purchasing decisions is the first step in building a healthy curl regimen!

So, what products should be used to maintain hair cuticle health?

via GIPHY

Depending on your temperament, you may be excited by this answer or a touch agitated: The choice is yours!

Yes. It is your purchase. Therefore, with your newfound knowledge, you get to call the shots!

I would not be so bold as to give you, dearest curlfriends, a catch-all product regimen because what works for my low porosity, dense 4C coily hair may not work for you. Alas, I would like to share a few notes about the products I have been using since embracing the importance of hair cuticle maintenance.

Rise and Smooth: Gerilyn’s Hair Cuticle Health Regimen

My coily hair is super healthy and happy!
  1. Cleanse with a gentle shampoo: Elucence Moisture Benefits Shampoo is a favorite among curlies of all textures. As SHOP NaturallyCurly customer Kisze can attest, “I have 4b low porosity hair & it cleansed but didn’t leave my hair too stripped.” This recommendation aided my selection process when deciding which cleanser would work best for my coils. I am glad I took heed.

  2. Smooth hair cuticles with conditioner: Coily hair is fragile and suffers from inevitable moisture evaporation. That is why I use a leave-in conditioner on a regular basis. In order to keep my coils hydrated throughout the day, I chose to continue using Noughty Hair Intensive Care Leave-In Conditioner. I discovered its magical properties a few weeks ago and have been very pleased with its ability to keep my ends hydrated.

  3. Seal moisture with a hydrating gel: This gel is my new obsession: Miss Jessie’s Jelly Soft Curls! The hydrolyzed wheat protein in this gel draws moisture from the air and into hair strands, making an ideal environment for the hair cuticle to stay smooth. The overall look of my hair, even after drying, is that of distinctively defined coils. If I want a “wet look” after my curls have dried, I simply mist them with good, ol’ fashioned H2O.

Your curls are versatile and this is thanks to the structure and behavior of your hair. How cool is that?

via GIPHY

If you have not picked up on it, I am serious about my hair cuticle health and product efficacy. As mentioned, it is imperative that you understand how your hair cuticle behaves in order to make the absolute best purchasing decisions for your textured coils, curls, and waves!

Are you just as adamant about hair cuticle behavior and curl health? Tell me all about it in the comments!

Have you tried vegan shampoo and conditioner for curly hair?

If you have curly hair, you have most likely experienced dry, crunchy curls.

According to our sources at CurlyNikki.com, “Naturally curly hair is prone to dryness because of the structure of the hair. The natural oils produced by the scalp of those with curly/kinky hair are not able to travel all the way down the hair shaft because of the twists and turns of the curls.”

Although this fact of life is inevitable, there are hair care products available to us that help alleviate dryness. Noughty Haircare products moisturize, condition, and soften wavy, curly, and coily hair with vegan ingredients.

The key ingredients in both the Noughty Moisture Boost Shampoo and Conditioner are natural emollients: sweet almond, olive oil, sunflower, and much lauded shea butter. These vegan ingredients are perfect for curlies looking for the most effective way to add moisture to dry curly strands without any animal products.

The most exciting part of trying a new product line is the anticipation of it actually staying true its claims of moisturized, frizz-free curls. When going into any new product arena, I have three requirements: innovation, safety, and efficacy. Does Noughty Haircare fit all of my criteria? Well, l would like to walk you, step-by-step, through my process (and you will have a chance to try your own process through our #HaveYouTriedThis giveaway!”>.

STEP 1 – Cleanse curls with a gentle shampoo

First, I will start with the shampoo to cleanse my scalp and to take off the current product I have in my Bantu knots (I used way too much gel for them and got a ridiculously flaky Bantu knot out – boooo!”>. Noughty To The Rescue Moisture Boost Shampoo contains sweet almond and sunflower seed extracts – Vegan ingredients that promise to restore damaged hair, protect ends from breakage, and reduce frizz from occurring.

Okay – number one – this lather is the TRUTH. Upon the first application, my curls were cleansed thoroughly, but I went ahead and went in for a second application to get to my roots and scalp. Ladies, let me tell you: I am pleased. I am ecstatic.

This shampoo is the new numero uno in my Holy Grail because it not only cleanses, it gently clarifies. When you have a bit of gunk built up on your scalp, you need a clarifying cleanser that moisturizers and this one takes all of the cake.

STEP 2 – Condition curls

Next up, I am conditioning my hair with Noughty To The Rescue Moisture Boost Conditioner. It is the complement to the shampoo; however, its ingredients include shea butter (yes!”> and olive oil (double yes!”>.

The conditioner has a lightweight consistency that still massages easily into textured hair. It also has a very pleasant scent which is a bonus for curlies that do not like that chemical stench that comes with some products. I massaged the conditioner into my strands for about two minutes because #selfcare and then rinse it out.

You guys. My hair is legit cleansed and moisturized right now. I am so happy!

STEP 3 – Leave-in conditioner for softness

Sure. I could tell you how absolutely divine the Noughty Intensive Care Leave-In Conditioner is, but wouldn’t you rather try it for yourself? After watching this sponsored tutorial video, learn how you can win your own tube of this nourishing, vegan leave-in.

Beauty Hack: Clarify curls, Add moisture to skin with Bentonite clay

Did you know that bentonite clay is beneficial to those suffering from acne, dry skin, and even damaged, stressed curls?

This clay alleviates common hair and skin concerns such as dryness by providing a layer of moisture and removing toxins.

As stated by Mountain Rose Herbs, “Bentonite clay has been traditionally used to assist in mineral deficiencies and to help bind toxins making them more soluble. Bentonite also referred to as Montmorillonite, is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays.”

Excited to try this amazing clay, yet? Great! The following steps will have you well on your way to moisturized hair and detoxed skin:

The first step to this ultimate beauty hack is to prepare the mask with Beauty Hack Bentonite Clay Base. The base is a 2-in-1 hair clarifier and soothing, toxin-removing mask for your skin. To thoroughly mix the bentonite clay, use warm water. The thickness of the base depends on how much water you use and is at your discretion.

Next, blend the bentonite clay base with Beauty Hack 100% Pure Avocado Oil. The fruit-derived oil revitalizes skin and hair thanks to its fatty acid and Vitamin E contents.

The last and final step is the most pleasant: blend Beauty Hack Rose Fragrance Oil into the bentonite clay and avocado oil concoction. The aroma of rose oil has been touted as a key to relaxation and mind-calming ease.

The proof is in the blend!

We partnered with SheaMoisture to show you the effectiveness this beauty hack in the video below (click GIF to see the video on Instagram”>:
