Winter is one of that times of the season when the air outside gets so much drier, it sucks the moisture from our natural hair, leaving it dry, hard, and susceptible to breakage, tangles, and other hair damage. The indoor heating systems are just as drying for your hair (talk about a real bummer) but you don’t have to walk into the winter unprepared. Our hair care arsenal is loaded with essentials needed to enable our curls, coils, and waves to combat the harshness of the weather and keep it thriving. The weather may be tough but these items are tougher. So without further ado, from hair cleansing products to repair creams to protective hats, here are some of the winter holy grail essentials we are thankful for:
COWASHES
Cowashes are a great substitute to condition and cleanse our hair between wash days. During harsh weather conditions that can come in the winter, we really don’t want our hair stripped of its natural oils, which is what a shampoo does.
Here are a couple of cowashes that help to gently cleanse our hair without stripping them of their natural oils:
1. EDEN BODYWORKS COCONUT SHEA CLEANSING COWASH
This is a sulfate-free gentle-cleansing conditioner that helps to remove product residue and build-up in the hair between regular washings to promote an overall healthy hair environment for growth.
2. CAROL’S DAUGHTER HAIR MILK COWASH CLEANSING CONDITIONER
Carols’ Daughter is formulated with Agave Nectar to help your curls, coils, and kinks get intense hydration (which is needed during Winter) and Pro-Vitamin B5 and shea butter to help strengthen your strands and keep them conditioned and detangled.
DEEP CONDITIONERS
Unlike regular conditioners, deep conditioners are formulated with intense moisturizing and/or protein ingredients to strengthen, repair, and replenish your hair strands with hydration, leaving them softer, shinier, and healthier. Deep conditioners not rinsed out immediately but are left to sit in the hair for at least 10 – 15 minutes to help nourish and replensih moisture in the scalp which makes them an essential winter holy grail product to have.
3. AFRICAN PRIDE MOISTURE MIRACLE MOROCCAN CLAY & SHEA BUTTER HEAT ACTIVATED MASQUE
African Pride Moisture contains Moroccan Red Clay that detoxifies and removes impurities and product build-up from the hair. It also contains shea butter that replenishes the hair with moisture and also strengthens it.
4. ONE ‘N ONLY ARGAN OIL HYDRATING MASK
If you’re looking for a hair mask that packs a punch, look no furhter. One ‘N Only helps to restructure the hair’s protective film to shield it from damage, leaving the hair with an overall healthy look and feel.
LEAVE-IN CONDITIONERS
Leave-in conditioners are applied to damp or dry hair and left in instead of being rinsed out like regular conditioners and deep conditioners. As a winter holy grail essential, investing in a good leave-in conditioner can be the difference between dry and moistuirzed hair. They provide the hair with moisture, making it smooth and manageable.
5. CURLS BLUEBERRY BLISS REPARATIVE LEAVE IN CONDITIONER
Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparitive Leave-In Conditioner is a fan favorite that repairs, restores, and conditions overworked curls. It has also been clinically proven to repair damaged hair, encourage hair growth, and prevent breakage.
6. AS I AM LEAVEIN CONDITIONER
As I Am is helping to keep the tangles away and provides a great foundation for natural styling. It contains an organic strengthening agent, plus natural ingredients that promote hair growth.
MOISTURIZERS
We’ve been talking this whole time about what makes a good holy grail product during the winter, and moisture is key. These are water-based creams formulated to penetrate the hair shafts with moisture and a couple of our favorites include:
7. SHEAMOISTURE COCONUT & HIBISCUS HOLD & SHINE MOISTURE MIST
A moisture mist that penetrates thick, curly hair, this is a special blend of nourishing silk protein, and hydrating coconut and neem oils that restore moisture and body while providing curl control for bouncy, healthy curls.
8. OBIA NATURALS TWIST WHIP BUTTER
This triple treat of unrefined Shea Butter, Tucuma Butter, and Mango Butter is formulated to intensely moisturize, seal, add shine, and protect the hair. It is also packed with the essential oils of Lemongrass and Lavender to keep your strengthened strands soft and to achieve lasting curl definition.
9. COCONUT RESTORE CASHMERE HAIR SOFTENING TONIC
The Coconut Restore Cashmere Hair Softening Tonic is formulated to help improve texture and manageability; it also conditions and softens hair for soft bounce-back curls and waves.
10. HOT OIL TREATMENTS
The purpose of hot oil treatments is to revive your dull strands, strengthen and replenish them with moisture, repair damage, and improve their appearance, among others, something you definitely need for winter. You can do a simple hot oil treatment at home by following these easy steps:
- Pour your favorite hair oils into an applicator bottle (these could include coconut, castor, jojoba oils, etc.).
- Leave the applicator bottle to sit in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes.
- Apply the warmed oils to your scalp and hair.
Watch this video here to see how to do a hot oil treatment:
HEAT PROTECTANTS
We always try to reduce the amount of heat on our hair, but if you’re going to use heat styling tools, you want to keep your curls, coils, and waves protected. It’s important to have a protective barrier between our hair and the heat so as not to cause any form of damage during this season.
11. FANTASIA IC HEAT PROTECTOR STRAIGHTENING SERUM
This highly concentrated formula protects the hair against heat damage from flat irons, hair dryers, and curling irons. It also leaves your hair silky soft with a vibrant shine.
12. RUCKER ROOTS LEAVE-IN HEAT PROTECTANT
Rucker Roots is bringing a leave-in treatment that helps you get your desired styles without damaging your hair.
OLAPLEX BOND TREATMENTS
Olaplex is a hair solution designed to repair and restore broken hair bonds that may have been damaged as a result of heat, color application, or other chemical and mechanical damage.
13. OLAPLEX NO.6 BOND SMOOTHER
This leave-in reparative styling creme eliminates frizz, hydrates & protects all hair types. It also strengthens, hydrates, moisturizes, and eliminates frizz and flyaways for up to 72 hours.
14. OLAPLEX HAIR PERFECTOR NO 3 REPAIRING TREATMENT
This is a single molecule, free of silicones and oils, that dramatically improves hair strength, protects from within, and provides immediate results.
SATIN-LINED HATS
If there’s one thing wool, cotton or other non-satin/silk hats do to your hair when you wear them, it intensifies the frizz and worsens the dryness. However, with satin-lined hats, your hair can retain moisture, and frizz is reduced to the barest minimum.
15. LVAIZ WINTER KNIT BEANIE FOR WOMEN SATIN LINED CABLE
This classic winter fashion trendy beanie is lined with satin to keep your hair smooth and maintain the hair moisture from being exposed to the dry air meanwhile the thick outer preserves the warmth providing extra care to your head and ears.
16. HYSUNLAND WOMEN’S SATIN LINED KNITTED BERET
Winter is here which means it’s time for fun accessories like this satin-lined beret which was designed to protect the women’s hair and keep hairstyles frizz-free.
CLARIFYING SHAMPOOS
Clariyfying shampoos can be used sparingly during the winter season (because of their drying properties), but these contain surfactants to help rid your hair of grease, oil, product buildup, and other impurities.
17. TALIAH WAAJID BLACK EARTH PRODUCTS STIMULATING HERBAL CLEANSER
The winter time can create layers of product build up on your scalp so you need a great product to cleanse your scalp. This product can soothe itching and other minor scalp irritations while stimulating your scalp for optimal hair growth.
18. PURE BY MADE BEAUTIFUL PUREIFYING CLEANSER
This detoxifying cleanser gently removes impurities and product build-up from hair. A unique blend of sea kelp, aloe, lemon, and cucumber, it helps the hair maintain moisture and strength.

Since its inception in 2009, the No Shave November challenge has remained constant. Created to help raise awareness for men’s health about certain diseases like cancer, which causes patients to lose hair, it involves participants (primarily men) forgoing shaving and instead leaving their hair and beards to grow out. The idea is to donate the money that would have been spent buying shaving kits and grooming oneself to save the lives of those battling cancer.
In the No Shave November challenge, there is only one rule: grow out your hair, including a full beard, a mustache, armpit hair, or even an Afro on your head. This challenge gained the involvement of men around the globe, including celebrities. It doesn’t matter whether you grow out a full beard or a tiny mustache; the most important thing is to remember the essence of the challenge, which is to spread awareness for men’s health.
If you want to get into the holiday spirit, look no further than these 25 celebrity men who know something about sporting a beard.

It’s a classic way to style your hair because it’s universally flattering and can be styled in a variety of ways. Regardless if you have coils, curls, or waves, a middle part can be worn with type of texture or hair length. Now while middle parts usually come in a straight line, they can be tweaked to add dimension to your look while suiting your face shape perfectly still.
Whether your headed to the salon and want inspiration or looking to change up your day to day style, here 12 middle part hairstyles you’ll love.

Whether you’re aiming for a chic French bob or playful pixie cut, short haircuts are always in season. Other benefits you can get from short haircut styles include a standout look, less tangling of hair, improved scalp health, affordable (if not cheaper) maintenance, less prone to damage, and versatile styling options.

As autumn gives way to winter, it is essential to make sure your natural hair stays as hydrated as possible to prevent dryness and that uncomfortably hard, crunchy feeling that comes with the harsh, cold weather conditions. If left unchecked, natural hair that is not properly hydrated during colder periods tends to become dryer, which causes breakage, split ends, and frizz, which, we can all agree, is not a good state for your hair. Thankfully, here is where upgrading your deep conditioning treatments is an effective way to ensure your hair stays moisturized this season.
As you may already know, deep conditioners ensure every strand of your natural hair is penetrated with moisturizing ingredients to allow it to thrive. As such, upgrading your deep conditioning treatment can be of utmost benefit in preventing your hair from experiencing dullness, dryness, and overall hair damage while helping it remain healthy.
So, without further ado, let’s get right into five ways you can upgrade your deep conditioning treatments this season:
1. Use the Felicia Leatherwood Heat Cap-Flaxseed Bonnet
This microwaveable bonnet allows your hair follicles to open up to gentle heat and absorb the moisture and nutrients from your conditioner. How do you use it? Start by coating your entire hair in your favorite conditioner while heating the bonnet in a microwave for two minutes. When the timer is up, cover your hair with the plastic cap that came with the bonnet, followed immediately by using the bonnet itself. Leave for 15 – 20 minutes before removing the bonnet and plastic cap. Rinse thoroughly.
2. Use an Overnight Hair Mask
Leaving a hair mask overnight not only helps to increase the moisture levels in your hair, but to reduce tangles and knots, restore shine to dull hair, and overall, leave your hair feeling soft and manageable for the next day. The Mielle Organics Moisture RX Hawaiian Ginger Moisturizing Hair Butter is a perfect addition to upgrading your deep conditioning routine because it locks in moisture and boosts shine. Saturate your hair in the conditioner, cover it with a shower cap for security (and a bonnet for extra security and heat), and go to bed in it. Rinse out thoroughly the next day.
3. DIY Deep Conditioner
Adding certain ingredients can help boost the effectiveness of your conditioner when you deep condition. The good news is that these ingredients are found in your kitchen, so you don’t have to worry about spending extra money.
To DIY a deep conditioner, you’ll need:
A cup of your favorite conditioner (or more, depending on the volume or length of your hair)
- ½ cup of Extra Virgin olive oil
- ½ cup of coconut oil
- One spoon of honey
- A stove
- A pan
- A mixer
Start by pouring the olive oil, coconut oil, and honey into the pan and placing on low heat. Once they’re melted, pour them into the cup of conditioner and mix until you get your desired consistency. Apply on your hair from roots to ends, cover in a shower cap, and leave on for 15 – 20 minutes before rinsing out thoroughly.
Watch this video for a practical way on how this is done:
4. Use a Deep Conditioner Based on Your Curl Type
If you have type 3 wavy/curly hair, it’s important for your hair to have a healthy balance of protein to keep it strengthened and healthy. For this reason, you can do a deep conditioning protein treatment once a month (depending on your hair’s protein needs). Mielle Organics Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner is a protein/moisture replenishment that can help restore dry and damaged hair. It can be easily applied to your coils and curls after shampooing for an intense treatment.
Kinky coily hair is easily prone to dryness and needs moisture to keep it healthy. Camille Rose Naturals Algae Renew Deep Conditioner can help improve hair cell regrowth which can result in thicker and stronger hair and give it lots of natural body and shine. As such, you’ll need a deep conditioner formulated explicitly with moisturizing ingredients to ensure your hair stays hydrated.
5. Opt for Co-Washing Over Regular Shampooing
Co-washing means using a conditioner to wash your hair instead of shampoo. Because shampoos are formulated with (harsh) ingredients to cleanse your scalp and hair thoroughly, they can strip your hair of its natural oils and, during winter, leave it dryer, making it more prone to breakage, split ends, and the like.
Conditioners, on the other hand, are formulated with milder ingredients that can help with gentle cleansing. Conditioners are created explicitly for co-washing, like the EDEN BodyWorks Coconut Shea Cleansing CoWash, which gently removes residue and build-up between wash days.
Now, while you should opt to wash your hair during this period, using a conditioner alone may not be adequate to cleanse your hair of impurities thoroughly. For this reason, you can use a clarifying shampoo occasionally.

As a young millennial in the 2000s, you may remember your mom, aunties, or many of the older women around you wearing claw clips in their hair, as it was quite the hair accessory trend back then. Perhaps you are a part of the older generation that has rocked this accessory yourself. Now, today in 2023, nostalgia has come knocking. Claw clips have returned to the fashion world, and naturalistas enjoy trying out different hairstyles with these accessories.
LuSeren Hair Clips
Now, even though claw clips are back on the scene, the truth is some women with thick curly hair have reported hair snagging, tangling, tearing, and breaking with their use. Not to mention that some of these claw clips break under the weight of very thick hair (which is a waste of money). Invest in high-quality claw clips with well-rounded edges that won’t cause hair damage to avoid these issues. Ideally, the right claw clip will clasp painlessly to your hair all day long, have long-lasting springs in between, and be sturdy enough to hold the weight of the hair without it breaking.
Here are some claw clips made for thick, curly hair that you can check out on Amazon:
Camila Paris
FRAMAR
Now that you know some claw clips that are suitable for your hair, let’s get into some banging hairstyles that you can create with them
1. Half up/Down Styling
While this is one of the popular ways to wear claw clips in your hair, it is also the easiest as all you have to do is section your hair horizontally into two, put the top section in a ponytail, raise and clip with the claw clip.
2. Zigzag Sleek Part
This bold part is a way to switch up your look from the regular straight part. With the tail of a rattail comb, create the zigzag part, sleek your hair down with hair gel and tie it in a ponytail. Prop the ponytail up and hold it in place with one claw clip.
3. Claw Clip With Dangling Coils
Do not limit your claw clips to natural hair that is not in a protective style. They can be used to accentuate your length and texture between wash days.
4. Mini Claw Clips on Day 3 Curls
While you may have come across videos or seen people use only one claw clip in their hair, the truth is you can use as much as two, three or even four mini claw clips to give your hair that pizzazz.
5.Claw Clips on Braids With French Curls
Here, you start by weaving the braids down, tying them in a ponytail, followed by rolling the ponytail and finally clipping the rolled ends with the claw clip.
6. Claw Clips on Short Coils
It’s a misconception – and a big one at that – that girls with short hair can join in the claw clip hairstyle fun. They sure can although they will need to braid or flat twist their hair first to keep the puff in place, ready for the claw clip use.
7. Claw Clips on Short Locs
Even if your locs have not grown very long, with bobby pins and elastic bands, you can still keep your locs securely in place before finally clipping with the claw clip.
8. Mohawk With Claw Clips
Put your hair into three or four horizontal parts and tie each section. Pin the claw clip to the back section and leave the hair in front to fall freely on your forehead.
9. Mini Twists With Claw Clips
On these mini twists, the hair is pulled to the back and secured with a claw clip while some bangs hang on the side.
10. Twist Out Updo
11. Chic Claw Clip Style
So you just took out your mini twists? Pull up your hair in this twist-out updo with soft bangs hanging by the sides and front of your hair, and secure the hairstyle with one claw clip.
Take out the flexi rods used last night to preserve your silk press, style in a ponytail or a half-up half-down style, and clip with the claw clip.
12. Claw Clip on Loose Curls
While we can all appreciate the length of long hair, it really can prove a bit challenging to work with, but here’s one trick: if you put it in a loose, messy roll and clip with one claw clip, it will still turn out a beautiful hairstyle just as any.
Pro Tip: Another thing is that when taking the claw clips out of your hair, do not yank them but gently unclasp and untangle any hair tangled around the teeth.

There are several ways to wear this trendy style, whether you want to wear a ponytail, updo, straight-back style, and feed-in braids. If you want to discover if stitch braids are for you, we’re breaking down all the details of this style, like what makes them different from regular braids and their benefits.
What are Stich Braids?
Stitch braids are a hair styling technique that first involves creating neat, short, parallel lines between the parted hair resembling stitches. Loved by both naturals and non-naturals alike for their uniqueness and versatility, it’s not uncommon to find many people choosing them as their protective style for the season.
Stitch Braids vs. Non-Stich Braids: What is The Difference?
Stitch braids and other non-stitch braids, like the traditional cornrow braids, are pretty similar in that they can be done in various styles. However, their technique sets stitch braids apart, which involves skillfully using the fingernails or teeth of a fine-tooth comb to achieve its precise, pronounced look. For example, take a look at these two straight-back hairstyles and see the difference:

What Makes Stitch Braids a Good Protective Style?
There are so many reasons stitch braids should be your protective style this season, and we’re excited to break down their benefits.
1. Their Unique Look
There is no denying that stitch braids are in a class of their own. And you’re sure to get many admiring looks and even compliments from people when you wear the style (now, who doesn’t like that?).
2. Heat or Heatless Options
Another great reason stitch braids are a good protective style is because they allow you to use heat or heatless methods as part of their finishing. If you are one of those who aren’t comfortable with having the ends of their extension sealed in hot water, that’s fine; you can opt for heatless methods like the slip knot method (tying the ends of the hair with the same braiding hair twice or three times), sewing the ends with needle and thread, using flexible rods to create curls on them, or simply covering them in hair beads, among others.
3. Longevity
While this largely depends on proper installation and after-installation maintenance, stitch braids can stay for up to three to four weeks, or even longer, even for kinky hair.
4. Reduced Manipulation
Stitch braids save you the need for daily/regular styling, thus saving you time and reducing manipulation of your natural hair to the barest minimum. It also allows for new hair growth to thrive.
5. Lightweight
Stitch braids are lightweight, although this also depends on the type of hair extension used, as some hair extensions can be heavy on the head. If you’re using a lightweight hair extension or even your natural hair, stitch braids won’t feel heavy on your head, reducing the rate at which shedding occurs.
6. Painless Yet Neat
If installed by a professional hairdresser, you should feel little to no pain, yet your stitch braids will still look sharp and neat. This is good news for those who have a low threshold for pain.
7. Versatility
There are multiple ways to wear stitch braids, including ponytails, updos, waterfalls, side swept, straight backs, and so many more. Better still, your hairdresser can create different designs with these styles, such as heart designs, zigzags, arrow designs, or even freestyle, and create something original and unique.

The winter season is approaching which means we’re going to see more curlies laying down their tresses with a silk press or blowout. While the terms can be interchangeable in conversation, the method and act of these regimens are very different. When it comes to techniques, a silk press and a blowout follow the same steps. However, the results can vary between the two techniques because of the tools and products involved to achieve the final style. We’re taking the guesswork out of both of these popular styling options so you can understand the difference and make the best decision for your texture and hair type with your stylist.
What is a Silk Press?
A silk press is a hairstyle that involves straightening the natural hair without the use of chemicals. First, the hair is washed and conditioned, then blown out, and finally flat ironed to create a soft, glossy look. Furthermore, the ends of the hair could be trimmed or curled for a perfect finish.
Here are some short videos on how a silk press is done:

How Long Does a Silk Press Last?
The longevity of a silk press depends on certain factors: first and foremost, how long you want to leave the style in; two, how well you maintain the style, humidity in the weather, and products used; and finally, your hair type and texture. If you strictly adhere to a proper maintenance routine, your silk press can last for as long as two weeks or more. However, when it comes to hair type, kinky type 4 hair may quickly lose shape and revert to its natural tightly coiled state due to the humid weather, while type 3 hair may hold the style for a more extended period.
How to Maintain A Silk Press
1. Use Lightweight Products
Heavyweight products can weigh down your silk press and cause your hair to revert to its natural state faster. They can also cause buildup on your scalp and hair. Similarly, using many products can weigh down your hair and cause buildup.
So, apply lightweight products like a serum to help the hairstyle maintain its silky appearance and protect your hair from humidity in the weather.
2. Protect the Ends of the Hair
The ends of the hair are part of its most vulnerable parts and, as such, are more prone to breakage, dryness, and split ends, among other hair damage. To ensure that your ends stay healthy, apply a moderate amount of lightweight oil or serum daily.
3. Sleep in a Satin Bonnet or Wrap the Hair in a Silk/Satin Scarf
The texture of a satin bonnet and a silk/satin scarf is smooth and slippery, preventing your hair from losing all its moisture when you go to bed. Furthermore, they help to reduce tangling, which can occur as you turn your head from side to side when sleeping.
4. Use a Shower Cap — In and Out of the Shower
Water is one way to quickly lose your silk press hairstyle and get your hair back to its natural state. So, you need to cover your hair with a shower cap before taking a shower. Also, during the winter season, you should keep a shower cap in your handbag to keep your silk press from coming in contact with unexpected weather.
What is a Blowout?
A blowout is simply a way of drying and stretching the hair. Like a silk press, it starts with washing and conditioning before drying and stretching. There are two ways to achieve a blowout on natural hair: heat and heatless methods. The heat method involves using a blow dryer and/or a round brush (although it is crucial to apply heat protectant on the hair first to prevent heat damage).
For the heatless method, the hair is braided in sections or tied with threads after washing, left to dry overnight, oiled, and brushed the next day. These videos show you how blowouts are achieved:
How Long Can a Blowout Last?
Unlike a silk press, a blowout can only last a couple of days. This is because when creating a silk press, there is higher heat exposure than on a blowout.
How to Maintain a Blowout
You can follow the same hair maintenance routine as with a silk press to maintain your blowout. However, when it comes to longevity, don’t forget that you shouldn’t have high expectations with your blowout as it tends to last for a shorter amount of time than a silk press.

Nostalgia has been reigning all year, and no accessory has made a bigger comeback than the claw clip. A claw clip, as its name implies, is a hair accessory that comes in the shape of a claw. Made from plastic, silicone, or metal, they are also called hair jaws, hair claws, or hair claw clips. The clip comprises two claws held together by a spring that makes it easy for them to open and snap close with a firm grip. The edges of the clip are smooth and, as such, do not tug or pull out your hair, nor do they cause pain when their teeth are clasped onto the hair.
Although usually large, they can also come in mini and medium sizes. Due to their bold look, the large ones can function as a lone hair accessory without any extras. They’re easy to use, and you can create a variety of hairstyles with them, like buns, updos, twists, etc. Their versatility makes it easy to go from a casual to a chic look, depending on the type of clip you use and how you style them in your hair. Although claw clips work with nearly all hair lengths, for short hair, a bit of talent is required to use them on the hair effectively.
If you’re new to the claw clip trend, we’re going to break down simple and easy ways you can use them to create your next enviable style in just a few steps.
How to Use a Claw Clip in Four Easy Steps
What you need:
Step One: Start With Pre-Stretched Hair
Pre-stretched hair is hair that has been stretched out, thus reducing shrinkage to a minimum and making it easier for you to work with. For naturals, the advice is to use heatless methods to stretch your hair, as heat curling tools can cause heat damage to your hair. These heatless methods include putting your hair into four or more large braids, twists, and tying with wool or African thread, among others.
Step Two: Section Hair
Run the tail of the rattail comb to create a neat vertical middle part, starting from the hairline and stopping a few inches away from the middle part of the head. Section the hair horizontally in the middle from where the middle part stopped (that is, from ear to ear) and tie the hair in the middle in a puff. Also, make sure to section the back of the hair in a horizontal part, but instead of tying it, leave it loose.
Step Three: Sleek Hair Down or Wear it Loose
Spritz your hair with water from the spray bottle, apply the hair gel to the hair on both sides of the middle part in front, and sleek it down with the hair brush. Brush all the way to the back. For short hair, you’ll have to braid in cornrows on both sides, from the middle part all the way to the back, to keep them laid down. Roll (or braid or twist) the ends of the hair together with the loose hair at the back and secure them to the puff with the claw clip.
Step Four: Put The Finishing Touches
Lay your edges with the edges brush and gel for a perfect finish. You can also spray hair shine for that extra glossy look and good smell.

No man with curly or coily hair likes bed head, and for real, no man with natural hair should. If you’ve never encountered bed head before, here’s what it can look like:
- Hair slapped flat on one or more sides of the head
- Springy curls are shrunken so that they’ve temporarily lost their springy shape
- Crunchy feel, frizzy, matted, and tangled
Overall, it’s frustrating and annoying that the entire hair looks different when you wake up from sleep…it can be a real hot mess. But you’re in luck because it’s not about disliking bed heads; it’s about what you can do to prevent them. Now, when it comes to managing textured hair in general, the situation can be tricky with different hair types, patterns, and routines that all contribute to your results. This is because curly, coily, and wavy hair can often have a mind of its own — it can be unwilling to cooperate with your vision.
Here are a few tips you can start implementing into your routine to help liven up your curls each day.
Before Bedtime Care Against Bed Heads
Tie Your Hair Into The Pineapple Hairdo
Now, this will work for only fellas with medium to long tresses. Putting your hair in the pineapple hairdo helps to keep it in one place as you sleep so you don’t have curls pressed flat and sticking out on your head in different directions. To do this, pull your hair up into a ponytail, secure it with an elastic band, and wrap the hair in a satin or silk scarf. The ponytail does not have to be firm; you can make it as loose as possible for comfort.
Put Your Curls In Twists or Braids
These are two other alternatives to putting your hair in the pineapple style, and they are also more suitably achieved on medium to long hair. Here, you can divide your curls into four or more sections (as determined by the thickness or length of the hair) and either braid or twist each section. This will not only prevent your hair from getting matted and tangled, but it also helps to give more definition to your curls.
Use Satin Pillowcases
The texture of cotton pillowcases is somewhat abrasive to the soft texture of your natural curls. Laying your head directly on one can cause your hair to experience breakage, dryness, split ends, and frizz, among others, as you turn in your sleep. On the other hand, the texture of satin pillowcases is smooth and allows your hair to move with ease as you turn your head in your sleep, thus reducing frizz, breakage, and dryness, among others, to a minimum.
Wear a Satin Scarf or Bonnet
This works for guys with curls of different hair lengths (short, medium, and long). All you need to do is wrap your hair with a satin scarf or wear a satin bonnet to keep the moisture locked in and reduce frizz and dryness, among others.
Sleep on Your Side
Sleeping on your back can cause your hair to become a tangled mess. To minimize tangles and matted hair, it is best to sleep on your side.

After Bedtime Care For Bed Heads
Wet The Hair
One of the ways to revive curls that have become shrunken as a result of bed head is through the use of good ol’ water. Sprinkle some drops of water from your spritz bottle all over your curls.
Moisturize
After wetting the hair, the next step is to use moisturize to keep these newly-revived curls in shape and give them shine. You can also use leave-in conditioner or oils.
Fluff With Fingers
This involves sliding your fingers into the hair and using them to shape and separate the curls.
Use a Pick Comb

Using a pick comb to lift the roots of the curls gently will help add more volume.

Ballet buns go way back in history, all the way to Greece, and they were worn by ballet dancers who needed their hair away from their faces so that it would not interfere with their dancing. The ballet bun could be high, low, or mid; the most important thing was to keep the hair neatly away from the face. In contemporary times, the ballet bun isn’t just worn by ballerinas but by everyone, including curly-haired girls. And if there’s one thing Curlies love to do, it’s to get creative and add a bit of tweak here and there to a hairstyle.
Are you ready to channel your inner ballerina and try this trendy style? Here are 12 ways to spice up your ballet bun hairstyle, whether you’re wearing braids or your hair is down.
1. Twisted High Ballet Bun

Heatless curls are the rave of the season and little wonder as they require zero heat to create, which is necessary for keeping heat-damaged hair at bay. However, it can be disappointing and frustrating when one day, your curls are popping, and after just one night of sleep, they’ve lost their pattern. Knowing how to maintain them to keep them looking their best and holding them in shape for longer days is thus of utmost importance. The good news is you will not have to do much or buy new products or tools when it comes to this, as the maintenance routine for heatless curls is on the low side.
Daily Maintenance For Heatless Curls
1. Oil Your Curls
These curls will need oiling to keep them refreshed. To oil them, apply a few drops of your favorite essential or carrier hair oil on your palm, rub them together, and gently massage them into your curls, carefully following the curl pattern. Oils also help to revive (and enhance) the appearance of your curls, taking them from dull-looking to shiny, happy curls.
2. Fluff With Your Fingers
A bedhead is something that happens to everyone. For clarity, a bed head is a hair flattened to one or more sides of the head due to the head being laid on the pillow during sleep. While it is completely normal to have them, they do mess up your curls, keeping them shrunken and mussed, which is not a very good look to carry for the day. To get rid of this, after oiling your hair or while oiling your hair, use your fingers to gently lift and fluff the curls, making sure to follow the curl pattern. Doing this will raise those curls flattened to the sides of your head, thus restoring them to their original bouncy glory.
3. Lift The Roots
The whole purpose of lifting the roots of the hair is to give it (the appearance of) more volume. To do this, you’ll need a pick comb. You may also choose to oil the teeth of the comb so that they glide smoothly through. Gently push the pick comb into the roots of your hair and lift just as gently. Repeat this all over.
4. Spray Your Curls
This is optional, but if you want your curls to smell good and you want that extra shine, then you should spray them with a good amount of hair spray.
Nighttime Maintenance For Heatless Curls
The nighttime maintenance for heatless curls does not require much. However, you need the right maintenance step, which can help you minimize having a bed head and losing some of your curl patterns. The best way to do this is through the pineapple method. The pineapple method involves pulling your hair up and tying it in a loose ponytail, thus giving it the resemblance of a pineapple-like look.
If your hair is on the thick (and long) side, you can split it in two — one in front and one at the back or one on the right and one on the left side of the head. When you’re done, wrap a satin or silk scarf around the perimeter of your head, and voila, you’re done. If you don’t have a scarf, you can cover your hair in a silk or satin bonnet for the night.

It’s that time of the season when we whip out our fall hats and rock them on our heads. These hats not only serve as an extra adornment to beautify our looks, but they protect the hair from exposure to sun and from the dryness of the wind, which could lead to moisture loss, hence resulting in dryness, frizz, and breakage. But sometimes, it can be a bit puzzling knowing which hairstyles to wear with fall hats. We’ve seen modern takes on the classic beret or beanie that now support thicker textures and more elaborate hairstyles.
Not to worry much longer; this article will be providing you with 15 hairstyles you can wear with your fall hats, so let’s begin:

Are you ready to fight the chill air with a beanie or ball cap? Maybe you want to switch it up this season and start adding accessories to your hairstyles. Lean into fall trends with these ribbon-inspired looks.
Ribbon hairstyles are perfect for every natural, whether student or worker. They add that extra spark to your hair with their vibrant color(s) and give you a fun, playful look. With balletcore accessories reigning supreme this season, adding ribbons to your hairstyles are a must. They come in a variety of textures, and colors, and can be seamlessly weaved into any hairstyle like braids, updos, or locs. This fall, there are so many ribbon hairstyles that you can create with minimal effort, whether on your natural hair or with extensions in.
Whether you have coils, kinks, or waves there are tons of ribbon hairstyles to inspire you this season!
1. Double Afro Puffs With a Ribbon

This ribbon hairstyle involves first sectioning your natural hair vertically into two equal parts, tying each in a puff, and tying a ribbon of any color of your choosing around one of the puffs. You may also include a swoop in front like that in the image above.
2. Ribbons on Twisted Single Braids

If you have braids done with extensions in, you can select two braids each from the front sides of your face, twist them, and adorn them with your ribbons.
3. Double Pigtails With Ribbons

This involves sectioning your hair into two equal parts, brushing both parts back, putting them in twists or braids, and accessorizing with ribbons for the perfect finishing touch.
4. Pink Ribbons on Double Four Ponytails

A hairstyle so simple yet lively, it is created by securing pink (or any color of your choosing) ribbons in between the laid hair and braids.
5. Ribbons on Locs

Naturals with locs are not exempted from enjoying the beauty that ribbons add to hairstyles. If you have on (faux) locs, you can style them (as you already do) how you want, with ribbons as the cherry on top.
6. Ribbons on Boho Knotless Braids

What can make boho knotless braids even cuter? Little ribbons randomly attached all over them.
7. Half-up Braided Ponytail For Kids

I guess we can all agree that hairstyles for kids should be as adorable as possible and what better way to do that than to include ribbons in their hair accessories?
8. Single Braided Ponytail With Ribbon

A single braided ponytail can appear more fabulous with a ribbon tied to it.
9. Ribbon in Updo

With a ribbon wrapped around it, these feathered ends braids will turn out even more chic.
10. Ribbon On Natural Twists

A single ribbon tied to the side of your natural twists can help switch up your look to an even more vibrant one.
11. Ribbon on Threaded Hair

African threading hairstyles help to stretch out the natural hair and the inclusion of ribbons makes them even more beautiful.
12. Ribbon on Full Afro

For whenever you decide to rock your Afro in its full glory, you can jazz it up with a ribbon or two.
13. RIBBON ON MESSY LOW PUFF

You’ll agree with me that despite their ‘unkempt look, messy low buns are beautiful in their own way, not to mention easy to create. A single frilled ribbon will fit just right in.
14. Ribbon Braids

For this particular ribbon hairstyle, you will need to either put on your creative gloves or simply get them done at a hair salon because they can be pretty tricky to create. They remain gorgeous nonetheless.
15. High Ponytail With Zigzag and Ombre Ends

Another hairstyle for the kiddos, this features a single black ribbon on a high ponytail with ombre ends.
