It involves understanding and embracing your fine hair, curls, coils, or waves’ unique needs. From proper prepooing techniques to drying routines, we shall look at essential styling methods to improve your hair’s shine and appearance.

Incorporating these styling methods into your hair care routine will ensure that your hair experiences less damage, dryness, and lackluster curls. Let’s explore styling techniques that will keep your hair texture looking fabulous.

FINE HAIR

Don’t Skip These Essential Stying Methods For Your Texture

Fine hair is a texture characterized by strands thinner in width than other hair types. Although fine hair can be dense in volume, when styled, this is very difficult to see as the strands appear smaller than they actually are. If you have fine hair, no worries; here are some styling hacks to make it appear fuller and with more volume.

ROOT CLIPPING

Also known as “O clipping” because of the O-shape the arm creates around the head when putting the clips in the hair, it involves using clips at the root of your curls to gain height and volume. The results are added lift and volume. To do root clipping, start with damp hair, carve out a small section of hair place a clip in an upward motion, and close it on the scalp. Repeat for every section of the hair and leave it until it is dry.

PREPOO

This involves applying certain hair products to the hair before shampooing. For fine hair, prepooing helps ease detangling while providing the hair with enough moisture, softness, and shine. To pre-poo, first put the hair into 4 or 8 sections. Next, apply prepoo on the hair from mid-shaft to ends, followed by detangling each section with your fingers first and then using a wide-tooth comb.

RAKING

This involves applying a curl-defining product to your hands, rubbing the product together to spread evenly on your palms, and running your fingers through your hair to give volume and curl clumps. When raking, it is advisable to do it up to three or four times to get a generous amount of the product into your hair. After the last raking, shake your hair a couple of times, as this will help to set your curls.

DIFFUSING

Diffusing is using a hair diffuser to distribute heat to your hair gently. To diffuse, start with damp hair and put the diffuser in a medium setting [this will open the hair cuticle]. Hover the diffuser around the head, starting at the roots, and finish with a cool setting [this will close the hair cuticle]. The results of diffusing your fine hair include more volume, defined and shaped curls, enhanced shine, and less frizz.

WAVY HAIR

Don’t Skip These Essential Stying Methods For Your Texture

This type of hair falls under the type 2 hair texture with an S-shaped look. Like curly hair, wavy hair is prone to frizz. Here are some styling methods that can help you keep your waves in shape.

SCRUNCHING

Start by applying a generous leave-in conditioner to dripping wet hair in small sections. Next, squeeze each section with your palms to remove excess water. After ridding the hair of excess water, apply gel and mousse and scrunch with your hands or a T-shirt. Follow this with plopping, and then apply a hair serum to the hair once it is dry.

PRAYING HANDS

✨ Praying Hands ✨ one of my favourite techniques for styling, it’s a great alternative to brush styling for similar results #cgm #curlyhairtutorial #curlyhair #curlygirl #curls #prayinghandsmethod

This styling method involves smoothing a styler on wavy hair with your palms to get defined waves and reduce frizz. Start by applying a styler to wet, dripping hair and smooth it from root to tip with your palms. The result is smooth spiral waves.

BOWL METHOD

https://www.tiktok.com/@sophiemariegraf/video/7356404389969481002?_r=1&_t=8oXeNKEzq45

This involves dunking your hair into a bowl of water to get volume at the roots and create curl clumps. To begin, place a bowl of water on the table and flip your hair upside down inside the bowl. Gently lift your head up [still upside down] and squeeze the water. Apply curl cream and gel or mousse to the hair and scrunch to get rid of the excess water. You can follow this by plopping or diffusing.

CURLY & COILY HAIR

Don’t Skip These Essential Stying Methods For Your Texture

Curly hair is hair texture that falls under type 3, ranging from loose curls to corkscrew curls; this hair type is prone to frizz and dryness. On the other hand, coily hair falls under type 4, which comprises tight curl patterns and is prone to dryness, brittleness, and shrinkage.

Here are some styling methods to effectively manage these hair textures.

BRUSH STYLING

This easy technique involves using a brush to create natural curly clumps. To start, tip your hair forward [ensure that your hair is wet]. Follow this by gently running a brush through your strands. When you brush your hair, give your head a gentle shake to set the curls. Follow this by scrunching and diffusing.

Brush styling can further be subdivided into:

i. RIBBON STYLING

This styling method involves using a brush to curl your hair for enhanced definition, and it is usually advisable to do this when dripping wet hair. Start by choosing a clump of hair and brush out to ensure smoothness [ensure that you brush starting from the roots]. Next, hold the curls at the roots and shake until the clump forms. The result is spiral ribbon-like curls.

ii. HANDLE STYLING

This type of brush styling involves manipulating the handle to achieve bouncy ringlets. Before starting, make sure that your hair is wet. Pick a section of hair and brush it the first time for smoothness with the handle pointing upwards. Next, twist the entire body of the brush and the bristles together with the section of hair and pull down until the brush is out of the curl.

PLOPPING

Created here on NaturallyCurly’s forum, this is a drying technique that involves applying a styler and then tying wet hair to a T-shirt or microfiber towel to cut down on drying time and achieve an enhanced curl pattern.

To begin, spread a long-sleeved T-shirt on your bed and flip your head forward, ensuring your curls’ body falls in the middle of the shirt. Next, roll the edge of the T-shirt behind your head and flip both hair and shirt over your neck. Secure the shirt on your head by tying the sleeves in a knot. Leave and take off when dry.

SHINGLING

https://www.tiktok.com/@brrrila/video/7247589320356269358?_r=1&_t=8oXcmpBZJQr

This is a styling method where products are applied to the hair in layers, resulting in bouncy curls. Start by applying the curling cream from the ends of clean wet hair all the way up [you can do this in sections to make it easier]. After working with all sections, apply gel and leave to dry.

CURL CLUMPING

https://www.tiktok.com/@curlyzia.xo/video/7254657733499112730?_r=1&_t=8oXgbKx1W8k

Curl clumping is a hair styling method that combines other methods like scrunching, diffusing, and plopping to give defined and tight curls devoid of frizz. Begin by applying a hair serum to clean hair, followed by a leave-in conditioner and finally, a curl-defining cream. You may choose to plop the hair with a T-shirt or microfiber towel, diffuse it, or leave it to air dry.

FINGER COILS

Another styling method that guarantees defined curls involves splitting clean hair into sections, applying a curl-defining cream per section, and twirling that section around your forefinger. Finger coils provide various benefits, including protecting your ends from split ends and heatless styling while preventing frizz.

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Kids’ hair comes in different textures just like the grownups’—fine, wavy, curly, coily…Like the grownups, parents and guardians need to take their time out to know what works best for their child’s texture to enable it to thrive. If, as a parent/guardian, you’ve been struggling with understanding how to tend to your child’s hair, then you’re in luck.

Today’s article will focus on providing you with regimens specially crafted to your child’s texture needs so let’s get straight into it:

Fine Hair

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Fine hair is hair that is smaller in thickness of individual strands than the average hair strands. If your child has this hair texture, you may notice that it is lightweight and lacks volume, even when the hair has density on the scalp. To deal with your child’s fine hair, here are three regimens that can help:

1. Shamwashing

A portmanteau of the words “shampoo” and “wash,” shamwashing is the process of getting rid of dirt, oils, and buildup that have accumulated on the hair and scalp over time by using a shampoo. While it is important to keep fine hair clean, as with any other hair texture, you must not overdo it.

Shampooing daily on your child’s fine hair can cause it to feel flat and lifeless. You can limit shamwashing to once or twice a week. When washing your child’s fine hair, you should use a volumizing shampoo as these contain proteins that help to lift the hair shafts and cause them to swell, thereby creating an illusion of fullness and thickness as opposed to a look that is flat and lifeless.

For an effective  shamwash on fine hair, follow these steps:

  • Section the hair into four or more sections.
  • Wet the hair and scalp with warm water to open up the follicles for easier cleansing.
  • Apply dollops of volumizing shampoo to the fine and rub the shampoo in until it begins to foam; make sure you focus on the scalp where all the dirt and grime are gathered.
  • Be careful that you’re using the skin under the fingernails and not the fingernails themselves as you don’t want to create cuts and bruises on your child’s scalp and hair.
  • Rinse out thoroughly.

2. Scalp Exfoliation

Over time, the scalp can be clogged with dead skin cells and dandruff (especially in the case of kids with fine hair which tends to produce more oil). While a shampoo can help cleanse the scalp as already pointed out, a scalp exfoliation goes the extra mile by detoxing the scalp of impurities, thereby allowing oxygen to get to the roots and promoting new growth and thriving hair. Exfoliating your child’s scalp is easy: section the hair and apply the scrub in gentle circular motions. Rinse off afterward.

3. Blowout for Volume

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Let’s face it: the flat appearance of fine hair is not always flattering. To give your child’s hair a look of fullness, you can decide to style it in a blowout. A blowout helps to add body to the strands of the hair by creating an illusion of a fuller hairstyle to the eye, and this can be achieved by using a regular blow dryer or a round brush.

To blow out fine hair, ensure your child’s hair is freshly washed and clean. Towel dry with a microfiber towel or a T-shirt and apply leave-in conditioner to make it soft and hydrated. Follow this by sectioning the hair and combing through any knots and tangles. Spray heat protectant on the hair, turn the blow dryer’s setting to medium heat, and blow dry by lifting the roots up. Never blow dry dripping wet hair, as this can cause frizz and heat damage.

Wavy Hair

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Wavy hair is a texture that is not fully straight or tightly curled. Like other hair textures, it also needs to be cared for to thrive. Here are three regimens you can adopt for a child with wavy hair:

4. Trimming

Of all hair textures, long hair is most susceptible to split ends. If your child’s hair is suffering from split ends, trimming is one effective way to deal with them. While you can get it professionally done, you can also do it yourself at home. To trim, you’ll need a pair of hair shears (using regular scissors can cause jagged ends and worsen the splits).

Start with clean, detangled hair coated with a leave-in conditioner for slip and softness. Split the hair into sections and cut half or one inch, depending on how far the splits are. Make sure the cuts are even. Comb and style as desired.

5. Protective Styling

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Protective styles are most suitable when you want to give your child’s hair a much-needed break from constant styling. Not only do they reduce breakage, they also encourage new growth. To prep your child’s hair for a protective style, wash and condition it to cleanse your scalp and hair. Towel dry and leave to air dry or blow dry (use a heat protectant).

Section the hair and massage leave-in conditioner to soften the strands. Comb through each section to ensure the hair is free from knots and tangles. Oil the scalp with a lightweight hair oil to prevent dryness. Massage the oil into the scalp to stimulate blood circulation. Go ahead and style.

6. Taming Frizz

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Another common problem with wavy hair is frizz, where individual hair strands spring up in multiple directions, giving the hair a rough look. To combat frizz, avoid using hot water to wash the hair, as this weakens the keratin balance and encourages the unkempt appearance of frizzy hair; use warm water instead.

After washing, avoid using cloth towels to dry your hair as they exacerbate the frizz situation; instead, use a T-shirt or a microfibre towel as they keep the frizz at bay by smoothing the cuticle down while speeding up drying time. When it’s time to comb, moisturize the waves as combing dry hair can result in frizz.

Curly Hair

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Curly hair is hair that has patterns resembling the letter S. When properly cared for, it can be such a beauty to the eye, which is one way every parent/guardian would love for their ward’s hair to appear — beautiful. These three regimens can help you ensure your child’s curly hair is at its best:

7. Detangling

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

If there’s one thing many parents whose children have curly hair would agree on, it’s that this hair texture is prone to matting and tangles. Separating these tangles and knots requires patience and the right process because it can be painful, and your child may lose hair if you are not careful. Start by spraying the hair with a detangler or water and moisturizing cream.

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Gently section the hair with your fingers, taking time to separate smaller parts from the whole. Spray more detangler for slip, and gently comb the hair with a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush from roots to tip. Repeat this process until the entire hair is free of tangles.

8. Flat Ironing

Because this particular regimen requires the use of a heat styling tool, you should do it for older kids who can sit still and are less afraid of the heat (of course, you’ll not be using a high heat setting either). Start this process by washing the hair, conditioning and gently detangling it. Towel dry and massage those tresses with leave-in conditioner for moisture and softness and follow this with heat protectant to prevent heat damage.

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Leave hair to air dry or blow dry. Never flat iron wet hair, as this can reduce the effectiveness. Ensure the heat setting is perfect, not too high or too low, as the maximum pass for the iron in the hair should be two times. Split the hair into sections and flat iron from the roots to the top. In the end, you’ll get shiny, smooth, silky hair. You can also spray some hairspray for that extra shine and smell.

9. Night Care Routine

Many adults tend to ignore their hair at night, so it won’t be a surprise if parents forget to care for kids’ hair at night. While we are not judging (we get it, parenting demands a whole lot that it’s so easy to forget), we would like to stress that it is important for the hair to be in a nourished state while your child is asleep just as well as when they are awake.

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

The good news is the night regime does not require too many items or time from you. It basically follows the regular routine of splitting the hair into sections, spritzing with water, applying moisturizing cream and sealing with oil. You can then put the hair in braids or twists if not already in a protective hairstyle. Wrap with a silk or satin scarf so as to preserve the moisture throughout the night.

Coily Hair

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

Like all other hair textures, the tightest pattern of all, coily hair requires proper maintenance to keep healthy. Here are three regimens you can follow if your child has this hair pattern:

10. Hot Oil Treatment

12 Simple Regimens to Style Your Kids Hair Across Every Texture

This hair treatment provides the hair with many benefits, some of which include nourishing and adding strength to the hair strands, replenishing lost moisture, helping with blood circulation, and serving as a detangler. It can also be used as a pre-poo as it helps as a barrier against the ingredients in shampoos that strip off moisture.

Mix two or three hair oils of your choice in a bottle to do a hot oil treatment. Let the bottle sit in a bowl of hot water for five minutes to warm up. Bring the bottle out and apply it to your child’s hair, which you must have already sectioned. Cover with a hair bonnet for 30 minutes and rinse off.

11. Deep Conditioning

Deep conditioning is one effective way of getting your child’s hair strands to absorb moisture intensely. To start with, shampoo the hair. Then, split it into sections and massage dollops of deep conditioner into each section. Cover the child’s hair with a shower cap and leave it for 30 minutes. Rinse out with cool water. The result is softer, defined, well-moisturized hair.

12. The Green House Effect

Many parents will agree that when their child’s oily hair is in a state that does not retain moisture, it can be quite frustrating when it comes to detangling and styling. Here comes the greenhouse effect to the rescue. The GHE helps to stimulate sebum which is needed to keep the scalp hydrated, it also aids in detangling, detoxing and cleansing the hair.

Before doing this, you must understand that it may be uncomfortable for younger kids as the child will need to sleep in it overnight. It is recommended that you do the GHE on older kids who can be more perseverant. To do the GHE, you’ll only require items you already have in the house, such as a spray bottle of water, moisturizer, hair serum, a shower cap, and a bonnet.

Start by spritzing the hair with water, applying moisturizer, and detangling it in sections. Next, apply serum to every section and pull the shower cap over it, followed by the hair bonnet. Leave on overnight and take off the caps in the morning. The result is softer, bouncy curls.

Conclusion

Every child is unique, as are the needs of his/her hair texture. As parents and guardians, knowing what regimen works best for our wards’ hair is key to ensuring their tresses flourish. Thankfully, the simple regimens in this article will make it easier for you to tend to your ward’s hair.

25 Dreadlock Styles for Boys

Are you tired of having to cut, braid, twist, and style your son’s hair regularly? Then you might want to consider dreadlock styles. Also known as dreads or locs, these–although many people are born with them–are made by sectioning the hair, twisting or rolling each section, and leaving them to matte. There are numerous benefits to having your little man wear dreadlock styles.

First of all, they save you and him the stress of hair manipulation and constant styling which can result in breakage and shedding. Another reason is that dreadlock styles promote hair growth as there is less wear and tear which usually occurs from constant and incorrect hair manipulation and styling.

Locs are also versatile when it comes to styling with many of these styles being what you can easily do at home such as the following below:

12 Frohawk Hairstyles for Kids

A frohawk is one bold and edgy hairdo that is just as perfect for kids as adults. Combining a mohawk and an Afro, this hairstyle exudes confidence and establishes presence. The frohawk originates from a mohawk, a hairstyle in which hair on both sides is shaved, leaving a conspicuous strip of hair running from front to back in the middle of the head.

However, in the case of a frohawk, the hair on both sides of the head is not shaven but instead slicked upward to meet the hair in the middle, just like a faux hawk. A frohawk and a faux hawk are quite similar; the only difference is that a frohawk must incorporate an Afro into the style.

Suppose you are considering this hairstyle for your little girl or boy. In that case, hair products like the Taliah Waajid Kinky, Wavy & Natural for Children Herbal Style & Shine, and the ORS Olive Oil Girls Fly Away Taming Edge Gel are some of the items needed to get started.

15 Adorable Rubber Band Hairstyle Ideas for Baby Girls

Besides regular braids and twists, the rubber band hairstyle is one of the best child-friendly hairstyles for your baby girl. This versatile hairstyle offers simple or complicated designs, yet the result still turns out beautiful.

To achieve this style, you’ll need a curling cream or hair gel like the CurlyKids Curly Gel Moisturizer, Just For Me Curl Peace Braiding & Twisting Grip Glaze, or the Cantu Care for Kids Curling Cream, and a pack of rubber bands. It is advisable to oil the rubber bands first to prevent tension, pain, or tightness in your little one’s hair or scalp.

If you’re ready to explore the adorable rubber band hairstyles for your baby girl, let’s dig right into it:

1. HEART RUBBER BAND HAIRSTYLE WITH FAUX PUFF

12 Black-Owned Barbershops to Visit For Your Next Haircut

Regarding black history, barbershops have always been part of the culture. Believed to have started in the 19th century, the backstory of how black barbers operated in the country is not filled with roses. For black barbershops, it’s more than just a haircut; they are a community for the culture, our community.

How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Protective Style

It’s your child’s first protective style, and you are excited but nervous about the process. You want your youngin’ to look good but not at the expense of putting them through discomfort. We’ve got you! In today’s article, we’ll take you through the necessary things to do to make sure your child enjoys their first protective styling. So, sit tight, and let’s do this.

1. INVOLVE THEM

Depending on the child’s age or how quickly they understand things, make them a part of the process. Show them cute hairstyles and help them select the one they like. When kids are involved in picking out their hairstyle, it can make them more excited to get their hair done.

2. GET THEM TO STAY STILL

Let’s face it, many younger kids are (hyper) active and do not like staying in one spot for long, and this can be frustrating whether you’re the one styling their hair or it’s at the hairdresser’s. Give them their favorite book or play cartoons on an iPad to get them to sit still. You can also sneak some snacks into their hands to get them to cooperate. It works like magic!

https://www.tiktok.com/@libbyhaircare/video/7233523347823381803?_r=1&_t=8jWNTRWMJKn&social_sharing=1

3. PREP THEIR HAIR

Ensure your child’s hair is clean and thoroughly detangled before you begin. This is because styling tangled hair is painful to the child, stressful to your arm, time-consuming, and all-around frustrating. So, that’s a total no. Dirty hair can cause itching, which is uncomfortable for your child and takes away from the fresh look of a new hairstyle.

4. BE GENTLE

When it comes to parting the lines, combing, and styling, you will have to be gentle, which may require more patience than usual. While we understand that you want the hairstyle to last for a long time so you don’t want to have to worry about doing their hair soon, you also don’t want your child in pain, which can be caused by pulling, twisting, braiding, or holding the hair too tight.

Styling the hair too tightly can also create little bumps on the tender scalp of your child. Don’t sacrifice comfort on the altar of long-lasting hair. Besides, except they’re older, kids will always be kids, including messing up their hair. Sorry, Mom, Dad, but that’s how kids are.

5. USE CHILD-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS

Do not use just any products on your child’s hair, as many products are formulated with harsh ingredients that can be detrimental to your child’s hair and scalp. Instead, go for child-friendly products that are gentle to your child’s hair.

6. AVOID USING HEAT TOOLS

Heat tools can damage the hair, but they can also burn your child’s hair and scalp. If the protective style your child is doing requires using hot water to straighten the ends of the hair, make sure you’re careful with it. The saying, “Beauty is pain,” does not apply to kids, so avoid it together if you can by using heatless methods.

7. DECORATE THE HAIR

After styling, decorate your child’s hair with ouchless bands, hair clips, barrettes, beads, and other colorful accessories that would animate the protective style. Children’s hairstyles should always look as lively and fun as can be.

8. LAY THEIR EDGES

This can be optional, but it is a great finishing touch to the hairstyle. It keeps flyaways in front neatly laid. It also adds beauty to the hairstyle.

9. HAVE AN AFTERCARE ROUTINE

As we said earlier, many younger kids tend to mess up their hairstyles because that’s just how kids can be. However, you can make your child’s protective style last longer by following up with an aftercare routine. You can moisturize the hair daily to keep the style looking fresh and use a soft brush and hair gel to tame flyaways.

For bedtime, wrap the hair up in a satin scarf or wear a satin bonnet on your child’s hair, as this helps to prevent matting, tangles, and frizz as they sleep. When it’s bathtime or shower time, have your child wear a shower cap to keep water splashes from getting into the hair and ruining the hairstyle. Finally, when it’s time to remove the protective style, do so gently, using a detangler to moisturize and help soften knots, making it easier to undo them.

Should You Invest in Hair Steamers? Felicia Jones Share Her Recommendations For Using This Tool

When it comes to curlies giving their strands some much-needed tender-loving deep conditioning treatment, hair steamers are part of the items that make the product list. As the name implies, a hair steamer is a haircare tool designed to open the hair cuticles, allowing for more effective penetration of haircare product ingredients to provide the hair with the utmost nourishment. Hair steamers benefit our strands in so many ways; it is no wonder they keep selling well on the market.

Should You Invest in Hair Steamers? Felicia Jones Share Her Recommendations For Using This Tool

To fully understand the importance of hair steamers to our hair, we spoke with ManeTrxx Founder and Licensed Cosmetologist, Felicia Jones to get some professional input. We’ve also included some popular hair steamer brands in this article that you should check out.

Could you please tell us about the different types of hair steamers suitable for curly hair?

My favorite type of hair steamer is a tabletop steamer from Amazon that comes with a hood attachment you can sit under or use the face steamer attachment to direct the steam where you need it. I especially like using the facial attachment when refreshing with steam. The Q Redew handheld steamer is also a great option if you prefer more control over your steam application. If all else fails, some people even grab their handheld clothing steamers, but just be sure to hold these further away because sometimes the temperatures are a little hotter than hair steamers.

What benefits do hair steamers like the Felicia Leatherwood Flaxseed Bonnet provide to the hair strands?

I love microwave heat caps with deep treatments or pre-poos to help give a more intense hair treatment. They are especially great for low-porosity hair that has a hard time absorbing products. High-porosity hair can get dry very easily, so doing intense deep treatments can help keep your hair hydrated.

With your experience, what would you say are the best practices to follow when using hair steamers?

Using steam is a great way to help stimulate growth, and is recommended vs constantly wetting your hair in between washes and allowing it to stay wet for long periods. Hair that stays wet too long is prone to a type of damage called hygral fatigue. Using steam allows you to refresh your products and loosen your curls that may have gotten stiff overnight without completely soaking them.

Steam also can help loosen up dirt and build up on the scalp when you use it with a pre-poo before cleansing your hair. I said previously I also think steam is great to help give more intense deep treatment when your hair is in need!

What are the maintenance requirements for hair steamers to ensure they remain efficient for an extended period?

Always empty any water in your steamer when finished to ensure you do not get mold or mildew. I also recommend using distilled water to avoid any mineral buildup you can get from tap water. Using a watered-down mixture of white vinegar and distilled water, you can clean your steamer once a month to ensure it’s running properly, but of course, always refer to your manufacturer’s instructions first!

Which Drying Method is Best For Your Texture?

After washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, the next thing to do is get it dried. However, when it comes to drying, you want to avoid getting frizzy and tangled hair and hair breakage. This is because wet hair is weak, and what you do to it in that state (including how you dry it) can impact the hair. That’s why today, we will be helping you with the best methods for drying your hair. We’ve broken the methods down into different hair types – coily, curly, and wavy – so you can get the best possible options.

BEST METHODS FOR DRYING COILY HAIR

1. Stretch

If you have type 4 coils, one of the best ways you can get your hair dry is by stretching it, and you can do this by putting it in plaits or tying it with wool or thread. This method not only cancels heat application to the hair but also reduces breakage and tangles. Furthermore, it helps you easily detect if the ends of your hair are in a good state.

To stretch your coils, start by parting the hair into a minimum of six sections (the length or fullness of your hair determines the number of sections. For example, for thin or fine hair, you may need fewer sections, while for full hair, you may need more sections). The next step is to take a section of the hair and twist, braid, or tie with thread. Repeat this step for all the other sections and leave to air dry.

2. Blow Dry

This method is a way to get your hair dry fast but involves applying heat. As we have said many times (and we won’t get tired of saying it), exposing your hair to heat can lead to damage in the long run, and damaged strands are the last thing you want. But does this mean you should avoid using heat, especially since it’s faster? Absolutely not! It would help if you took precautions such as spraying your hair with a heat protectant, using a cooler setting on your blow dryer, and not putting the blow dryer too close to your hair.

After drying your hair, here are a few products we recommend you apply to your hair to replenish it with moisture.

BEST METHODS FOR DRYING CURLY HAIR

If you have type 3 curly hair, these methods are guaranteed to help you dry your hair:

1. Plop Your Hair

The plopping method originated here on the NaturallyCurly forums and many curlies have since adopted it because of its benefits to their hair. Plopping is a great way of drying your curls because it not only cuts down on drying time but also eliminates the use of heat tools and reduces frizz. Another thing is that it allows for more curl definition and creates a lift at the roots of your hair.

To plop, start by spreading an oversized t-shirt or a large microfibre towel on your bed, table, or counter. Next, bend your head forward, letting your curls fall into the center of the t-shirt or towel. Follow this by rolling and wrapping the bottom of the t-shirt or towel around your head. Flip the other part of the t-shirt, wrap it around your head, and tie it in front. Leave for 10 – 20 minutes.

2. Use a Bonnet Hair Dryer

This provides many benefits to your curls, including faster drying time, diffused heat (which reduces the risk of hair damage), and even product distribution, among others. To use the bonnet hair dryer, blot your hair first before placing the bonnet over your head, ensuring every part is covered and then strap it at the chin. Next, fit the mouth of your blow dryer into the hose connected to the bonnet dryer and turn on your blow dryer (remember to use a cooler setting). You’ll notice that the bonnet fills up as air comes into it. Leave for between 30 minutes to 1 hour.

We recommend using these products immediately after drying your hair to tame frizz and restore moisture.

Air drying your wavy tresses is a simple, heat-free, damage-free way to get them dry, although it might take longer to do. Start by immediately blotting your soaking wet hair with a microfibre towel, scrunching your waves, and then leaving it to air dry.

2. Diffuse

While a diffuser is not a fast way of drying your hair, it is a safe way of using heat to dry your hair. It also gives your hair more lift at the roots, reduces frizz, and enhances curl definition if you apply a curl cream or a mousse before diffusing. To diffuse, put your hair dryer setting on medium to low heat and hover it over your hair until it is fully dried.
