A lot of these products also treat and nourish the hair thanks to the benefits of the oils and ingredients inside. Here are some great oil blends for wavy hair.
The T3 Source Hand-Held Shower Filter
I have read time and time again that using a shower filter will do great things for the hair and skin. It makes sense–they sell filtered water to drink so why not use it externally too? On my never ending quest to get my best hair possible, in October I finally caved in and bought one. I gave myself ample time to use it so I could provide this thorough review.I decided to purchase the T3 Source Hand-Held Shower Filter during Sephora’s 20% off sale. It retails for $130-150. What really intrigued me about this specific model was that aside from the filter it has 8 different setting speeds and pressures like my old showerhead did. It is also hand held so if I was just washing my hair and not my whole body I can do so rather easily.
T3’s Product Claims
Discover the Pure Water Difference. Chlorine is one of the real culprits behind dry, damaged hair and skin. A survey of public water shows that regular household water can contain nearly as much chlorine as that recommended for swimming pools. By using a patented formula of Tourmaline, precious metals and minerals, T3 Source Shower Filters can remove up to 95% of chlorine from shower water which:
- Improves hair health and beauty
- Enhances the color retention and vibrancy of processed hair
- Helps skin to be less dry, retain more moisture and look healthier
- Makes skin noticeably softer and smoother
Through a filtration process called “Redox”, T3 Source Shower Filters transform chlorine into harmless elements that are too large to be absorbed by hair and skin. The patented technology is tested and certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF”> who is a US water supply auditor and world health organization member.

My Review
More than anything else, I wanted the filtered shower head to help preserve my hair color. As a blonde who is majorly prone to brassiness, my hair stylist suggested that the shower water may be a culprit! I have also read that using the shower filter can help preserve the life of my color and after spending the money to get my color looking all nice and pretty, I absolutely want to preserve it!
How much softer and smoother my skin felt! Even with this cold winter I find myself needed less body lotion as usual which is great. Everyone in my house even agreed that their skin has been feeling nicer lately.Seeing the effects on my hair took a bit longer. I only wash my hair twice a week and I was not expecting miraculous results. It took about a month worth of washing to notice that my hair felt softer and more manageable. After that I began noticing a little more shine too.
I wasn’t paying attention to my hair color right away, as my hair desperately needed a touch up and was a bit of a mess. About a month and a half in, I went for my color touch up. Since getting my color done and only showering with the T3, my color still looks vibrant weeks later and my blonde does not seem as brassy as it usually is. I still use purple conditioner once a week for good measure but there is still a noticeable difference from pre filtered showerhead.
Frizz wise, so far I haven’t seen a major difference.
Frizz wise, so far I haven’t seen a major difference. However, I notice that my 60+ year old mom, who has genetically dry, frizzy, very slightly wavy hair, has been having her hair look a bit more smoother, shinier and less frizzy lately! I asked her if she was doing anything else different and she hasn’t, so it has to be the shower head.
My final thoughts
Assembly of the shower head was very easy and instructions came with it so that helped tons. Overall, I am very happy with the T3 Source Shower Filter and because of the nice difference in my hair color, softness and shine, I don’t want to shower without it!

Last month I reviewed some Kerastase products, you can read all about them here. Being that I am still on a nice Kerastase kick since I have been loving the results and I did buy other products during my Black Friday Haul. I have more product reviews to share!
Résistance Force Architecte
This line is made supposed to give strength back to damaged hair. Ideal for those with brittle, damaged hair and split ends. My hair is super damaged, dry and prone to breakage split ends so this line really did appeal to me. Sometimes I mix these with the products from the Discipline line (from my last review”> to get the benefits of repairing the hair as well as anti-frizz!The Key Technology: Complexe Ciment-Cylane
- Intra-Cylane: recreates a holding structure around each breakage point
- Pro-Keratin: fills in the gaps in the cortex
- Ceramides: build external cohesion and smooth the surface cuticle
Bain Force Architecte (Shampoo”>
What They Say: Daily, reconstructing shampoo for weakened to very damaged hair. Rebuilds and strengthens the hair fiber at all levels of hair erosion. Reconstructs hair, intensifying strength from roots to ends. Helps prevent breakage and split ends with patented Intra-Cylane. Smoothes and protects surface of the hair fiber.
What I Say: I wish this shampoo did not have sulfates. Before starting use of Kerastase products a couple months ago, my hair was experiencing some major damage and just not looking up to par despite obsessing over it and using other great products.
I kind of threw my old CG method rules out the window, at least temporarily–and tried this shampoo, sulfates and all. It smells light and for a shampoo that is not sulfate-free, and I was surprised how soft and conditioned, clean but not stripped it left my hair! I’ve used sulfate-free shampoos that left my hair feeling more dry and rough compared to this. That being said, I am still too much of a “sulfate-phobe” and when I use this now, I usually use a sulfate free cleansing on the lengths of my hair for caution.I am still too much of a “sulfate-phobe
Masque Force Architecte
What They Say: Reconstructing masque that instantly replenishes weakened to very damaged hair. Intensely replenishes while rebuilding holding structure of hair fiber. Smoothes, heals and protects hair. Helps prevent breakage and split ends with patented Intra-Cylane. Fortifies every strand from within for maximum effectiveness.
What I Say: This is on my Holy Grail Masque list now. The jar is expensive, but if a product will work for my hair I’ll make room in my budget for it! Our hair is our best accessory and we wear it every day. I am all about anything that helps prevent breakage and split ends. My hair drinks it in and I like the idea that it is making my hair stronger with each use. Detangling was easy with this mask and I feel my hair is coming back to life with it.Ciment Thermique
What They Say: 85% less breakage from Blow-dry, Strengthens and fortifies the hair fiber, Smoothes away cracks and split ends while adding shine, Excellent leave-in care. Vita-Ciment strengthens fiber from inside. Vita-Topseal recreates external protective layer.
What I Say: I contacted Kerastase direct about this one (the contact us feature on their site is very helpful”>, since I don’t always blow dry my hair I wanted to make sure it was okay to be used while air drying. They said it is heat activated and doesn’t offer much without heat. The couple of times I did use it while diffusing, my hair was not as puffy or frizzy and the diffuse came out better than usual.Resistance Fibre Architecte
What They Say: The first reparative dual-serum that targets the highest level of hair erosion and fill the gaps in the fiber. Reconstructs hair intensifying strength from roots to ends. Use in conjunction with any Kérastase Thermique for long lasting results. Repairs and seals split ends. Delivers long lasting styling results. Gives a non-greasy, fresh haircut feel. Smoothes the surface and adds shine.
What I Say: Nothing can repair split ends except a trim. I do like the idea of temporarily sealing them and binding them together so the split doesn’t continue up the hair shaft. I use a little on wet or dry hair, really focusing on my ends. I notice shine right away and again, I like the idea that with continued use my hair will become stronger and healthier. I use this prior to blow-drying as well for added protection, it’s awesome!
Overall, I do really like the Resistance Force Architecte line. I plan on keeping it in my rotation for a while so my hair becomes stronger and healthier. I actually do feel I have been getting less breakage since adding these to my routine, and that is wonderful. And I’m still surprised how much I like the shampoo even though it contains sulfates.
I actually do feel I have been getting less breakage since adding these to my routine
Elixir Ultime
What They Say: Versatile nourishing oil that provides ultimate shine, softness and nourishment for all hair types. Multi-use oil that can be used pre and post styling. Delivers ultimate shine, deep conditioning and nourishment. Add softness, strength, and smoothness. Promotes cellular renewal with its anti-oxidant active ingredients. Helps restore strength to the hair and protects it from external aggressors. A blend of four precious scented oils that works for all hair types. Includes the OLEO-COMPLEXE of Maize Oil: Delivers emollient and anti-oxidant active ingredients for ultimate shine, Pracaxi Oil: Brings shine, nourishment and deep conditioning to the hair, Camellia Oil: Helps smooth the hair fiber, resulting in incredible shine and Argan Oil: Helps restore strength to the hair and protects it from external aggressors.
What I say: This is a new Holy Grail oil blend for me. Though a lot of Kerastase products aren’t, this one is silicone free. Be warned it is on the heavier side and may weigh down finer hair. But if your hair is unruly, unmanageable and out of control line mine, I think it will adore this stuff! It smells so good- like a musky vanilla. I like to use this oil to seal my wet hair or to add shine and help with frizz on days old hair too. It may also be used as a pre poo treatment. A little goes a long way.
*Update* Kerastaste Initialiste
I originally reviewed this in my last Kerastase article but while I am here I figured I would give an update. I am continuing to use this product after every wash and truly believe my hair is behaving a bit better and growing a little bit quicker because of this. There is also less shedding. I am also STILL on my first bottle from November, which is awesome because usually hair products do not last super long for me.

Have you ever noticed how children’s hair gets beautiful, natural highlights when they are out in the sun?
Ombre hair and balayage are two popular hair coloring techniques that help achieve a similar result through coloring. Though they are similar, there are distinct differences that will help you determine whether you’re an ombre or a balayage kind of girl. Search YouTube and you will find tons of videos and personal tutorials on how to achieve ombre hair or balayage by both hairdressers and DIYers alike. I personally suggest going to a salon to get color done, but if done carefully, you can also do them at home. Ombre and balayage are often confused due to their similarities, but there are some important differences to note.
Ombre
Ombre hair is the gradual lightening of the hair strand, usually fading from a darker color near the roots to a lighter one at the ends. The word ombre is a French word meaning “as two-toned”. Ombre can be very subtle or very striking. The look you want to achieve will depend on the technique and level of lightness.
Balayage
Balayage is French meaning “to sweep.” The balayage technique was developed in France in 1970’s and is called a freehand technique as the colorist applies color with hands rather than foiling. When the color is being applied, the majority of the brush strokes are horizontal in nature to coat the front and back of the hair strands. In balayage, the colorist “sweeps” vertically with the tip of the brush and only to the front of the hair. This creating natural, sun kissed highlights. Balayage is currently the most requested coloring technique in salons today with lots of celebrities doing their hair in this fashion.
Ask yourself these questions to determine which look is for you:
- Am I okay with the “grown-out roots” look?
- Do I want something low maintenance?
- How much lighter than my natural shade do I want to go?
- How do I usually style my hair? Unaltered texture, or straightened?
- Am I okay with bleaching my hair?
If You’re Not About the Touch-Up Life
Both ombre and balayage look beautiful on all different hair types and textures. If you’re okay with roots, and bleach, then ombre is great for you. Ombre hair is dark at the top gradually going lighter towards the bottom so it will almost look like you’ve skipped a few hair appointments. This is good for those who do not want to go to the salon as often since touch ups do not need to be frequent.
A plus about wavy and curly hair wearing ombre is that because the line of demarcation (the “line” separating natural color from artificial color”> being prominent, it will blend in with your texture and not be as noticeable. If you straighten your hair, you will see more of a contrast. Waves and curls hide that line much better. Because ombre hair can have very light ends, there is a high chance bleach will be used. The ends of our hair are already the most damaged, so proceed with caution.
If You Don’t Do Bleach
Balayage is low maintenance and gives off more of a subtle color. Balayage may not require bleach depending on how light you want to go. The classic balayage look is supposed to look natural, so you will probably only go 2-3 shades lighter than your natural color.
Because the color is painted on the hair vertically, you will not get that demarcation line mentioned with ombre. This makes balayage an excellent choice for those with straighter hair. As the color grows out, it will be less noticeable, making time between salon appointments longer, just like with ombre.
Both of these coloring options are on trend and can be worn in various ways. As with any color service, especially those that involve lightening parts of the hair, remember to deep condition regularly to maintain the hair’s health and integrity. Also, if you are going to be doing ombre and lightening up your ends significantly, you might want to consider a split end mender to help with damage. Alterna Split End Mends and Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Split End Sealer are two good options. Thanks to The Love Hanger for the imperative information on these two coloring techniques. And for more ombre and balayage color inspiration, check out the Curl Dr, Shai Amiel.
In 2013 you could not escape the pixie cut. Women of all hairtypes were marching into salons armed with pixie cut inspiration (including our own editor Cristina”>. As the pixie brigade began to the grow out process, a new trend emerged: the “Wob,” which is short for the “Wavy Bob.” Celebrities like Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Rita Ora, and Jennifer Lawrence have all been rocking notable wobs, making it an undeniable It Girl haircut.
Wob? What’s That?
Taking the place of the “Lob” (long bob“> this style has been seen all over celebrities and common folks alike. This cut manages to be both sophisticated and playful, and the good news is that it is universally flattering and work for nearly every face shape!
The wob has a lot of bounce and body and can make the women wearing it appear more youthful and younger. It is a wavy chin or shoulder sweeping cut and is carefree, flowing and by all accounts very easy to style. Though this may be shorter than you’ve ever gone before, you still have the safety net of being able to pull it back into a little ponytail if desired.
A lot of people who fear going all the way with a pixie cut are opting to test out the waters with a wob, because the grow out process is shorter and less harrowing. If you have a lot of damaged, your ends are stressed beyond repair, now may be a nice time to cut them loose so you can rock the wob or lob style and then grow out healthy, undamaged hair.
How to get a wob
The first step is to get the right cut. If you have wavy or curly hair then it is best to work closely with a stylist you trust who has plenty of experience with wavy and curly hair. Your hair isn’t going to behave the same way as straight, fine hair so your stylist needs to account for your curl pattern, width and density. For example, if you want your hair to be Jennifer’s length, then you will likely need the hair to be cut longer to allow for shrinkage. If you’re in need of a trust-worthy stylist, use our Salon Finder to find a curly stylist in your area and read reviews before you make your decision. If your stylist is skilled and honest, then they will let you know how your individual curls will behave in this cut and shape during your consultation, and you can decide if you’d like to move forward with it.
When it comes to styling the wob, there are a huge variety of options available, from tousled, choppy waves to a more sleek and polished curl. All can be easily achieved with just a handful of tools and products.
For straight hair
If you are looking to enhance the texture of straighter hair you can try a texture spray such as Living Proof Texture Mist or Ouidad Wave Create Sea Spray. If you still need need help creating the wave through your hair, use a heat protectant spray and a big barrel curling wand, at least 1″ in diameter. Wrap the hair loosely around it starting at eye level and leave the ends out so that they do not curl.
For wavy hair
This haircut is perfect for wavy hair, as you can get away with minimal styling. When you wash your hair, be sure to dry it with a t-shirt or microfiber towel and then simply keep your hands off your hair while it air dries. If your waves are looser or tighter than Jennifer Lawrence’s, you may want to shape a few of the face framing waves with a curling wand. A heatless way to achieve a similar look is by braiding or creating a loose pin curl with a bobby pin and a little bit of styling product while your hair is drying. Just be sure to leave the ends out when you curl or pin curl your hair if you’re going for the straight and piecey look that Jennifer Lawrence has. For naturally wavy and curly hair it will be more practical to let your waves and curls do their thing and curl at the ends as they normally would. Balms like AG Beach Bomb and TIGI Curlesque Amplifier give the perfect amount of hold for this look.
For curly hair
If you want to elongate tighter curls into waves try Original Moxie Shape Shifter Reforming Creme or Curly Hair Solutions Extenzz. Depending on your curl pattern, this cut may require you to stretch your curls with a stretching style, here are a few of our favorites. If your hair is naturally much curlier than Jennifer Lawrence’s, then this is going to be a high maintenance look for you to style, so think about your current daily routine and decide if this cut fits in with your lifestyle.
A wob looks nice with or without bangs and you can play up your part- side or center to add even more versatility to the look.
Have you recently gotten a wob or have thought about it? Share pics in Style Nook!
Of course you’ve heard about platinum–but what about Ecaille? These are the two hot hair color trends to be on the lookout for in 2015.
Ecaille is the new ombre.
Ecaille is a French word that means tortoiseshell and is also referred to as “The Tortoiseshell Technique” It was created by colorant specialist Jo Hansford, right after London Fashion Week, and fellow Senior Colorist Jaclyn Smith says: “Ecaille is a healthy and glossy update for ombre fans of those who felt it was too stark for their style. Ecaille gives hair a soft, multi-tonal look without any harsh lines to compliment your natural tones.” For example- golden highlights paired with darker, rich caramel tones. celebrity colorist and Clairol Color Director James Corbett told Instyle magazine “It’s warm browns, honeys, and ambers just like a tortoiseshell comb. Blondes are more golden, with a few “babylights” worked into these tones to create the sublet dimension.”
Ecaille can leave your hair looking radiant and sun kissed. It helps warm up and add dimension to the hair while enhancing your natural appearance by softening your facial features. This look compliments all hair colors and skin tones. A lot of celebrities such as Blake Lively, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jessica Alba are rocking this new color trend.
How to Ask for the Ecaille Look
This trend is more popular in Europe and is still relatively new here in the states. You want to find a salon that is already familiar with the look. Bring pictures too so your colorist knows exactly what you are looking for. Ask for various tones, roots with lighter ends. But keep in mind if you go too light with your hair, it will just look like and ombre. Also, make sure there is no noticeable separation between the light and dark pieces or any harsh contrast. If you don’t clarify it will just look like highlights.
To achieve the look, have your colorist focus on a few bolder, face-framing pieces in the front, complemented by softer, lighter painted pieces all around.
A major difference between ombre and Ecaille is that Ecaille is much more subtle and natural looking. Ombre is very prominent in two different tones where Ecaille appears more natural and healthier.
Platinum blonde hair will not only make a statement, it will change your entire look.
Another big hair color trend that probably can’t be any further from Ecaille is platinum! Men and women alike are lightening their locks (Hi Justin Bieber, Pete Wentz and Adam Levine”> Platinum hair is currently one of the top hair searches on YouTube! The key to keeping the platinum bright and on trend is to stay cool toned like Gwen Stefani.
This color is not for the meek or the shy.
This color is also not advisable to try if your hair is already severely damaged. Going platinum will damage your hair, sadly there is no way around it. Luckily, with the new technology of Olaplex, thousands of hair stylists are achieving blonder and brighter hair with minimal damage, but damage will still be there. It is STRONGLY suggested to go to the salon if you want platinum hair, trying it at home can lead to disaster.
There are several things to consider when going platinum: It is expensive and it is high maintenance. Root touch ups are practically required every four weeks, so keep that in mind before taking the plunge. This can be time consuming and the dollars can add up quickly.
If you do go platinum you will want to deep condition every time you wash because going platinum really does take a toll and dry out your hair. You want to lay off hot tools more than ever with platinum hair because the hair can become so very fragile. You also will want to invest in a purple shampoo and/or conditioner to help fight brassiness- your hair can turn yellow really quickly if not properly taken care of.
I am not trying to scare anyone away from going platinum. I personally find platinum hair to be GORGEOUS. My hair would be platinum if it was healthier and I wasn’t prone to so much breakage. Dare I say, it is my favorite hair color out there. I just want you to know exactly what you are getting into before diving in.
I am a self proclaimed product junkie and I have some favorite products.
Recently, my hair has been looking a bit lifeless, and feeling extra dry and unmanageable despite frequent deep conditioning treatments, air drying and thinking I was doing the right thing by following the Curly Girl Method. I decided to give the Curly Girl Method a break, and not to obsess over using silicone-free products. Remember, what works for one head of hair may not work for all, hair can change over time and there is also a myth that our hair might even get used to certain products.I decided to invest in some Kerastase products…to see if they live up to all of the hype
I decided to invest in some Kerastase products I have heard so much about over the years to see if they live up to all of the hype about being some of the best products out there. Pricy? Yes, very. But my hair is starting to behave better again so that is worth every penny. Here are my thoughts on a few of their products.
Kerastase Initialiste
What Kerastase Says:
Transform your hair in 7 days with Initialiste. Our 1st skincare-inspired super serum that acts on the four attributes of total hair beauty: 1. Strength 2. Shine 3. Softness 4. Substance
9 out of 10 women* saw a visible difference in their hair texture after one week. With continued usage, your hair stays healthier from root to tip allowing it to grow longer† with 93% less breakage. The new Must-Have for all hair types. Maximize the potential length of your hair. Keep it longer and stronger as it grows.
What I Say
After I wash my hair (twice a week”> on clean hair I follow the instructions and apply it on my clean scalp and then massage. I think it is making my hair softer and I definitely notice more shine. I also seem to be shedding less which is huge for me. I will continue to use it to see if it helps fight breakage and aid hair growth. I have only been using this about a month, so I look forward to seeing more long term results.
Metamorph’Oil
What They Say
Oil-infused gel-to-milk purifying pre-cleanse prepares the fiber for optimal shampoo and conditioner performance. Optimal Hair Fiber Preperation, Boosts performance of any Kérastase Shampoo & Conditioner, Leaves hair feeling soft & purified. Ideal blend of 6 precious oils to boost protection, resistance, shine and nutrition: coriander, coco, rice, argan, cranberry and grape seed oils.
What I Say
One of my favorite Kerastase products! The formula is so unique, it feels like jelly. I like to use this like a pre-poo, so I usually apply this to my whole head the day I am going to wash later on, then wear my hair in a ponytail. It helps with frizz and provides shine for the day. When I wash my hair at night, there are no tangles and I can run my hands through my hair! Seriously, my hands glide down my hair like butter, it is crazy!! This has become my favorite pre-poo treatment.
Discipline Range
What They Say
According to Kerastase, “L’Oréal Advanced Research decided to focus on women’s dissatisfaction with their unmanageable, frizzy or undisciplined hair. The researchers took to heart women’s desire for ‘obedient’ hair that does exactly what they want it to do. This new approach has enabled them to create Discipline, a sophisticated range to tame even the most unruly hair while also restoring harmony and the beauty of perfect motion. If the promise made by Discipline is a promise that breaks with the past, it’s thanks to the combined action of Morpho-Keratine™, a unique blend of shape enhancing ingredients to consolidate hair fiber and Surface-morphing polymers to smooth surface roughness.”
What I Say
This line sounds like it was created for my hair, seriously you should see it when I don’t take the time to style it properly, it’s scary. I have been really enjoying these products. I’ve been using them as a system and overall I notice my hair does feel softer with less frizz and is more manageable. So I believe the line is living up to its claims.
Ingredients
Some of the ingredients used throughout the line include:
- MORPHO-KERATINE: technology restores inner flexibility and weightlessly disciplines the outer fiber for perfect hair movement, taming frizz and protecting against humidity
- CONDITIONING AGENTS: to reduce static and frizz
- SHINE AMPLIFIER: to add shine to the hair
- XYLOSE: for heat styling protection
DISCIPLINE Bain Fluidealiste Sulfate-Free (shampoo”>
What They Say
Smooth-in-motion sulfate free shampoo provides discipline and fluidity. Optimal nourishment without weight. For sensitized or chemically-treated hair.
What I say
This sulfate free shampoo leaves my hair feeling clean and not stripped at all. A little goes a long way and it has a pleasant, fresh fragrance. I still need to follow up with conditioner to properly moisturize my hair, but I really like this as step one for frizz free locks.
DISCIPLINE Fondant Fluidealiste (conditioner”>
What They Say
Smooth-in-motion conditioner makes hair extremely soft to the touch. Daily conditioner. Instantly transforms hair to be softer, smoother and fluid-like. Provides suppleness and shine with a lightweight finish. For fine to normal, unmanageable hair
What I Say
Because my hair is so super dry and unmanageable, whenever I shampoo I always follow up with a deep conditioning mask, so imstead I use this conditioner as a leave in after and my hair feels extremely soft.
DISCIPLINE Maskeratine (deep conditioner masque”>
What They Say
Smooth-in-motion mask provides maximum frizz control and extreme softness. Provides maximum frizz control, extreme softness and suppleness. Seals ends to help prevent future blowdry damage. For Fine to Coarse, Unmanageable Hair. What I say
This masque is SUPER concentrated and a little really does go a long way. The price is high so that’s a sigh of relief for me. This is now on my Holy Grail Masque list as I agree it does help control my frizz and make my usually brittle feeling hair feel EXTREMELY soft. Makes detangling easier too. I don’t blow dry every single wash, but whether I do blow dry or air dry, it just makes my hair look better in every possible way and gives me a better sense of control over the frizz beast on my head. I like to leave it on at least 10 minutes at a time, but usually I try to do 30. Sometimes I do cocktail it with other Kerastase and non Kerastase masques as well.
DISCIPLINE Spray Fluidissime
What They Say
Thermal anti-frizz protection spray provides shine and control. Instantly eases blowdry with heat protection up to 450°F. Provides shine and control with 72 hours of frizz protection. For fine to coarse, unmanageable hair.
What I Say
As I mentioned, I don’t blow-dry my hair all that often but when I do, I will spray this after using leave in conditioner to protect my hair from the heat. Not only does my hair look shinier when I use this, but there is also a dramatic cut in frizz and volume which I LOVE!
I am happy to report that based on what I have tried from Kerastase so far, I understand why hairdressers, celebrities and people all over the world love this line and constantly talk about it! There is some good stuff right here. I also was reading that the Kerastase Discipline line has an In Salon treatment to even further help frizz and not disrupt curl pattern…I am SUPER intrigued!
Also worth noting
I recently went to the salon for a trim and to get my hair color redone. I enjoy getting my hair blown out straight at the salon in the cooler months (she uses heat protectant spray and I always get a treatment right after color”> and my hairdresser commented my hair felt softer and more manageable to blow out than the last time I went to see her, which was before I started using Kerastase products.Have you tried any Kerastase products? Let me know if there are any other products you’d like me to review.

If you google “hair tips” or “hair advice”, literally millions of search results will come up. Often, the same information is repeated over and over again. Some facts are true and solid advice, while other hair myths live on even if they are not accurate. Read on for some of the most common hair myths and their truths.
Myth: Frequent trims make hair grow faster.
Truth: “Hair grows a half-inch per month, whether you cut it or not,” says John Barrett, owner of the John Barrett Salon in New York City. Hair may grow slightly faster in the summer, but that has nothing to do with the stylist’s scissors and everything to do with hormones, which do speed growth a little. One thing a trim will do: Eliminate split ends, making hair look better. If you have healthy hair with no split ends and are looking to grow your hair out- there is no need to trim your hair just because you think you HAVE to trim it every 6 to 8 weeks, etc. Look at the ends of your hair, trim when they are split and past the point of no return or if you just want a new, shorter look.
Myth: Switching shampoos can make hair look healthier.
Truth: It may seem so, but experts scoff. “Hair can’t tell the difference between brands or build up tolerance to any product,” says London-based hair and scalp expert Philip Kingsley. “Your favorite shampoo will work the same every time you lather up, week after week, month after month.” If you have very oily hair or favor a particularly sticky styling product that contains wax, it does pay to use a clarifying shampoo once every two weeks to wash away residue. If you think your hair looks better by switching up shampoo every so often, or if you are a self-proclaimed product junkie who loves trying new shampoos, feel free to switch it up, but there is no true “need” to (unless of course, you start developing a reaction to your old shampoo- then please stop immediately”>
Myth: If you pluck out one gray hair, two more will sprout in its place.
Truth: While this isn’t true, plucking out those gray strands is a bad habit. You can damage the roots, causing infection or leaving a scar. While you won’t grow two back, when plucking, you also run the risk of that hair never growing back either- and nobody wants that!
Myth: You can’t make flat, fine hair look full of body.
Truth: Five minutes with a set of large hot rollers will add life to straight hair. Don’t give up right away, like anything- practice makes perfect. Before you know it, you will have more faux full looking hair! The Living Proof Full line can also help.
Myth: To get really clean hair, you must lather, rinse, and repeat.
Truth: One thorough washing will do the trick. But if you REALLY feel the need to shampoo twice, make sure the shampoo does not contain sulfates or you can be drying out your hair.
Myth: Rinsing with ice-cold water will give you shinier hair.
Truth: The experts say it will wake you up, but dousing of cold water will have no effect on the shininess of your tresses. However, if you do think rinsing with cold makes your hair look better, and you do not mind the brrr-factor, there is no harm in doing so.
Myth: Coloring your hair causes major damage.
Truth: I Products today — both at home and in the salon — are gentle enough not to weaken hair. In fact, some contain extra conditioners that may leave hair more manageable than before. Although it’s not necessary, “it can’t hurt to consult a professional stylist the first time you do anything permanent to your hair or scalp,” Kingsley counsels. However, even using the best of the best products, coloring your hair will never be 100% damage free.
Myth: You can mend split ends with the right products.
Truth: Once they’re split, then that’s it. The only thing you can do then is cut them off. Celebrity stylist Jimmy Paul suggests making split ends less noticeable by applying a product containing silicone or beeswax. It will temporarily seal ends together, making hair softer and more manageable. Split ends can’t be permanently repaired.
Myth: You should brush your hair 100 strokes every day.
Truth: “Brush only to style it, because brushing pulls hairs out of their follicles and possibly weakens individual strands,” says Kingsley. Plus, as curly girls- we all know what happens if we brush our hair dry!! (hello frizz”>
Any time I hear something regarding “hair growth” or “hair loss prevention” I am immediately intrigued, especially if it is natural. Research shows that an Iodine deficiency may be a contribution to hair loss and why some can’t grow their hair as long as they want to.
It is clear that the micro-nutrient iodine (And iron, magnesium and zinc”> is a key essential element for the normal growth and development in all of the body’s organ and tissue systems.
Iodine in combination with the aforementioned minerals is often considered the best “hair growth minerals” you can take for healthy hair. Some say it is “a natural element that helps hair growth miraculously.”
If you are currently experiencing hair loss, it may be a good idea to supplement with these, as hair loss can be one of the most common signs of a deficiency in iodine. Iodine deficiency is a common cause of hair loss that many people do not realize is behind the trauma. Iodine deficiency is a very started when the food industry replaced iodine with bromine about 40 years back. Bromine is a processed food enhancer, widely used today in pastas, cookies, breads and other bakery items.
Iodine, when combined with iron, zinc and magnesium is said to be one of the best minerals that help in maintaining healthy and lustrous hair. The thyroid gland relies on iodine to make the hormones necessary for the growth of healthy hair, teeth and bones. When we are deficient in this nutrient, the health of our hair can suffer, leading to hair weakness or total hair loss. In order to avoid hair loss, you need to fulfill the iodine requirement of your body. If your body is deficient of iodine, it can cause hypothyroidism. In hypothyroidism, the cell metabolism in our body slows down, thus reducing the energy received by the hair cells to function properly. Deficiency of iodine may not only make you shed hair on head but also on eyebrows. Taking a safe nascent iodine supplement may boost hair health and growth, and may event prevent or reverse hair loss.
Benefits of Iodine for Hair Growth
- Iodine has the ability to restore hair by killing off fungus which eats the end of hair follicles and also contains some potent antiparasitic, antiviral and antibacterial properties which helps maintain the health of your scalp.
- Iodine also stimulates the thyroid which helps in boosting your hair growth and maintains its strength.
- Because of its antibacterial and anti-parasitic properties, it also helps to fight infection on your scalp, which clears the follicles and roots. This automatically makes way for hair to grow on a fast pace.
- Iodine also prevents dry hair, hair loss and hair greying problem.
- Iodine makes your hair thick and strengthens them from roots.
There are a few studies that support this evidence. One 2001 study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology described the use of iodine as a treatment for patients with alopecia (hair loss”>, and found hair re-growth in a number of patients.
Try a high-quality, nascent iodine supplement, such as Detoxadine. This form of nascent iodine provides you with the recommended daily allowance of iodine in a bio-elemental nanocolloidal state. It is extremely important that you consume the correct amount of iodine. Excessive consumption of iodine can be dangerous. It decreases the flow of blood and hinders the growth of thyroid gland. It may turn toxic if used too often. Consult your doctor to determine the correct amount of iodine for you. [prodmod]Have you tried one of these Iodine solutions?
Note: Always check with your doctor before taking any new supplement or vitamin. To boost up your hair growth and prevent hair loss, it is advised to intake iodine supplement for 3 to 4 days. Then, stop consumption for next 4 days and after that, start again. This regime follows the body’s natural cycle. So, in order to repair and heal, the body requires rest. The break of 4 days in between should enhance the effects of iodine. The amount of iodine to be consumed may vary from person to person.
I am a true believer that the health of your hair not only results in what you put on top of it outside, but also how you nourish yourself from the inside.
On top of eating a well balanced diet, vitamins with specific ingredients to help target hair can help your strands grow longer and stronger. When the kind folks at NaturallyCurly asked me if I wanted to try the Hair Essentials vitamins by Natural Wellbeing for three months, I happily agreed.
When starting any new vitamin, it is important to check with your doctor and while there should not be any side effects, some of us may have allergies to certain ingredients so if you take any vitamin and you do not feel right, please stop taking immediately. Okay, now that that part is out of the way here is what the company says about their vitamins:

What I Say
I followed the instructions on the bottle and took 3 vitamins each day with food as part of my morning vitamin routine. With any vitamin, it usually takes 2 to 3 months to start working which is why when NaturallyCurly offered me the opportunity to try, I asked for 3 months so I can give it a thorough evaluation. I am glad to report I had no side effects and felt nothing bad from taking them. They were super easy to swallow capsules with no gross vitamin taste. These are not magic pills, such a thing doesn’t exist so it didn’t give me rapunzel like locks in the 3 months but my hair has been growing healthily. To be completely honest, I have been taking some kind of hair vitamin for over 3 years now–Viviscal, Hairfinity, FollicleFuel, etc. (but not at the same time”>–so I cannot attribute any specific changes to these actual vitamins, but that’s not to say they did nothing for me. Since I did begin taking hair vitamins in general I do notice that my hair grows at a nice rate (a little over half an inch a month”>, feels dense and though I do shed like crazy, I don’t shed as much as I did prior to hair vitamins.I don’t buy into the fact hair vitamins can fix already damaged hair. Hair already damaged is already grown out of the scalp and what vitamins is nourish the follicle and root of the hair. Being in my late 20s, I also look at hair vitamins as a preventative measure, sort of like anti aging.
By starting to take the vitamins now I am hoping down the road I do not suffer from any extreme hair loss.
You may purchase Hair Essential Vitamins on Shop.NaturallyCurly.com.
If you do notice hair loss, excessive shedding or want some kind of insurance to get your hair to be its healthiest, I say these are worth a try. Just give them at least 3 months and always have realistic expectations.
Most of us know a friend or relative who has dealt with breast cancer and seen firsthand its devastating effects. On top of the pain and distress of dealing with a disease like cancer come the many side effects associated with its treatment, and some salons are offering their services to make women’s lives just a little bit easier.
A new community outreach program at Studio 514 in Oceanside, CA is offering a free haircut or styling consultation to any breast cancer patient who is losing hair to chemotherapy or in the process of growing it back.
According to U-T San Diego, Hairstylist Gloria Sheik, who co-owns Studio 514 with her husband, Mike Taylor, said she lost two close girlfriends to cancer in the past two years and she wanted to use her expertise to “add meaning to beauty.”
“These women are going through such a challenging time in their lives. It’s a scary place, but by creating a style they like, it empowers them and helps them feel better about themselves,” said Sheik, who specializes in short haircuts and last month styled for four companies at New York Fashion Week. “What I like to tell these clients is that instead of focusing on length, they should focus on their goals and enjoy experimenting with styles they never had before.” Sheik says the right cut could be flirty and fun, and if it’s the right shape for a woman’s head and hair texture, it would be easy to maintain while the hair grows it out.
“Women are intimidated by short haircuts because they’re not seen as feminine. I give them images of Jennifer Lawrence and Halle Berry and show them that they can look beautiful with short hair, as long as it’s not cut like Don Draper,” said Sheik, referring to the 1960s “Mad Men” character played by Jon Hamm.
Sheik has donated free hairstyling services to charitable causes in the past, like a career transition program. But she feels this new in-house program will be a better fit for herself and her fellow stylists.
I enjoy the chance to get to know who these women are, find out what’s meaningful to them about their hair, listen to their needs and then connect the dots. For me it’s fun, challenging and really rewarding.
To make an appointment, patients are asked to call Studio 514 at (760″> 967-7973 or message the salon through its Facebook page.
Bobby pins can be a hair fanatic’s best friend. These little genius wonders help keep hair out of our eyes and hold our hair in place when needed. However, perhaps you have been frustrated with the pins not staying where they should stay–slipping, sliding and moving all around? Believe it or not, there are a few tips and tricks to ensure you make the most of your bobby pins.
Not knowing where they all wind up however is an entirely different story. First, we have to distinguish the difference between bobby pins and hair pins.
Hair pins are nice for finishing updos for a softer took but they will not hold hair and keep it super tight. They are more “U” shaped as opposed to bobby pins. Though they have their place, that is not what this article is about. Bobby pins will secure hair in place so the hair does not move and hold the hair tight.
How to use a bobby pin
We know, it sounds so basic but for starters we all know bobby pins have two sides: the “flat” side and the “wavy” side. But do you know which one is the right side up? Here are 4 bobby pin tips that may surprise you:
- The first and perhaps most important tip would be which side of the bobby pin faces up. Seriously I learned this a few months ago and it was life altering.
- When using a bobby pin, you are supposed to have the wavy side closer to your head! For my whole entire life up until this point I was using the flat side against my head and wondering why they would never stay where I wanted them to.
- Open the bobby pin up with the wavy side closer to your head (flat side facing up”>, take the hair you want pinned down inside the opening and push the pin back. Allow the pin to close as you are pushing it back.
- Another trick that I often do is what I call “cross-pinning” To make sure neither side slips out I slide one bobby pin in on a bit of a diagonal and then cross another pin over it the same way so it looks like an “X”.
Not only can bobby pins be used to keep bangs and hairline pieces out of your face, but they can secure any loose/shorter hairs that do not fit into ponytails/buns. If you’re growing out bangs, at an awkward hair length, or just having an off day, a few strategic bobby pins can make a world of difference.

Did you know? The use of lipstick dates all the way back to medieval times… Even when the economy is low, lipstick sales do not reflect it. There is something about a brand new tube of lipstick that just brings us ladies such happiness and excitement. Just like hair color, a lipstick color can transform your whole look. I personally believe that you can wear whatever color lipstick you like, if it makes you feel happy and good about yourself–go for it! However, certain lipstick shades do pair extremely well with certain hair colors. Let’s have a look!
There is something about a brand new tube of lipstick that just brings us ladies such happiness and excitement.
Blonde hair
Blonde hair pairs extremely well with pinks, peaches and sheer berries. All shades of pink work well for blonde hair. Being a blonde myself, pink is my favorite shade of lipstick I do reach for. Sheer berries are nice, especially in the cooler months because you still get the nice berry color but it isn’t too intense of a contrast against the hair color. Blonde hair and red lipstick of course is a classic (Hello Marilyn!”> but I say stick with a red that has a cool, blue undertone.
Try: L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche in Miss Magenta ($6 at Walmart”>
Brown hair
Vibrant hues like plums, burgundy and reds look striking on brunettes. Don’t be afraid to go for a bolder lipstick color, as your hair color creates the frame for the lip look.
Try: Nyx Matte Lipstick in Siren ($6 at Walgreens”>
Black hair
Black hair is very similar to brown, as vibrant hues like plum, burgundy and reds work well paired up against the hair. On the other end of the spectrum, light shades such as bubblegum pink also look pretty against black hair as well.
Try: Rimmel London Moisture Renew in Red Alert ($7 at Ulta”>
Red hair
Red hair naturally adds some warmth to your complexion. Apricot shades looks especially nice against red hair without clashing against the hair color. Dewy pinks and peaches also look nice against red hair. Red lipstick also is nice with red hair, but I suggest reaching for one with warmer undertones.
Try: Ulta Lipstick in Sweet Apricot, ($8 at Ulta”>
To sum it up
As I mentioned, this is just a basic suggestion. Colored cosmetics such as lipstick is all about having fun! Don’t be afraid to experiment you might fall in love with a lipstick color you never knew you would.
My favorite lipstick color across the board is Je Ne Sais Quoi by It Cosmetics. It is the perfect shade of pink for everyone, and looks clear in the tube but it “morphs” into your own perfect color by mixing with your own personal chemistry. This shade can look completely different on you than it does on me and I find that to be so cool!

How great is it we can purchase some wonderful SheaMoisture products and help benefit charity at the same time?? The collection includes a line for hair and body. My review will be on the hair products only.
Intense Hydration
This line by SheaMoisture focuses on Intense Hydration. The line features:
- Manuka Honey – contains anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the scalp. Creates a moisturizing barrier.
- Mafura Oil – contains high levels of beneficial oleic acid. Replenishes stripped oils from hair.
- African Rock Fig – contains antioxidant Vitamin C. Keeps hair vibrant in appearance.
As far as smell is concerned, to me the smell is strong and I smell the combination of both the honey and the fig. I don’t mind it, It smells kind of sweet and a tad fruity, but it can be strong.
I notice since using items from this line my curly wave definition has noticeably increased! This was true whether I used all four together or just cocktailed one or two with other lines. This led me to believe now that more hydrated hair = more defined hair. On top of that, I saw a MAJOR increase in shine and my hair overall just felt softer, more manageable and healthier.
SheaMoisture Community Commerce Hydration Intensive Hair Serum
What They Say: SheaMoisture’s Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Serum is a potent treatment that absorbs quickly to encourage a healthy scalp and lustrous, beautiful hair. Certified organic Shea Butter, Honey, Mafura and Baobab Oils blend with antioxidant-rich African Rock Fig to moisturize and improve strengthen hair’s elasticity, promoting healthy growth. Leaves hair soft, manageable and resilient.
What I Say: I usually seal my wet hair with pure Argan Oil but lately I have been sealing with 2 droppers full of this stuff…and I LOVE it!! The shine is adds to my hair in incredible and my hair feels silky. On days 2 or 3 I can use a little bit of this to fight frizz and bring back some shine if any was lost. It doesn’t weigh my hair down or leave it looking greasy. This is my current favorite oil/elixir type product from SheaMoisture now.
SheaMoisture Community Commerce Hydration Intensive Shampoo
What They Say: SheaMoisture’s Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo cleanses while infusing hair with intensive moisture and shine-enhancing nutrients. Certified organic Shea Butter, Honey, Mafura and Baobab Oils are blended into a rich formulation of restorative oils to soften and revitalize hair. Antioxidant –rich African Rock Fig helps boost hydration while protecting distressed hair from environmental influences. Sulfate-free.
What I Say: My hair felt clean and moisturized after using this. This for sure was one of the most hydrating SheaMoisture shampoos I used, and that is impressive because as far as shampoos go, most of the SheaMoisture ones do nourish my hair. I actually was able to do a little detangling with it too. For a shampoo, it was very rich. It had minimal lather which I didn’t mind because it is sulfate free.
SheaMoisture Community Commerce Hydration Intensive Conditioner
What They Say: SheaMoisture’s Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Conditioner instantly softens and detangles while infusing hair with intense moisture and shine-enhancing nutrients. Certified organic Shea Butter, Honey, Mafura and Baobab Oils are blended into a rich formulation of restorative oils to nourish and condition dry, brittle hair. Helps restore manageability. Antioxidant-rich African Rock Fig helps boost hydration while protecting distressed hair from environmental influences. Leaves hair soft, shiny and easy to style.
What I Say: I didn’t actually try this as a conditioner but have been using it as a leave in. My hair loves it!! I can’t get over how soft and shiny my hair is looking and the increased curl definition I see, particularly when I do use this as a leave in. It’s incredibly moisturizing yet I still feel it does not weigh my hair down. How that works? I don’t know, but I like that it does. I concentrate this especially on my overdue-for-a-trim ends and it makes them look a wee less frazzled. I think this is going to make a great leave in especially as the weather starts getting cooler and the air begins to get dry.
SheaMoisture Community Commerce Hydration Intensive Hair Masque
What They Say: SheaMoisture’s Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque intensely conditions while infusing hair with a powerful dose of moisture and nutrients. Certified organic Shea Butter, Honey, Mafura and Baobab Oils are blended with antioxidant-rich African Rock Fig to restore and lock in moisture while deeply conditioning. Smoothes and fortifies follicles for stronger, healthier frizz-free hair.
What I Say: I feel a bit repetitive but like the rest of the line, this masque left my hair feeling so very soft and made it more manageable. I finger detangled without a comb. I found this masque to be concentrated- a little went a long way and my thirsty blonde locks drank it right up. I used this mask a few times- with or without heat and it performed wonderfully both ways. Another SheaMoisture masque happily added to my deep treatment rotation.
Final thoughts
After all that being said and done I have one complaint about this line. I don’t like the fact that I heard it’s limited edition!? What!?!?! No. No. No. No. No. No. No. Please, dear wonderful folks at SheaMoisture, reconsider should that be true. Curly girls NEED this line, especially ones like me with uber dry hair and especially as we will be bracing ourselves for the super brutal, cold, leave-my-hair-brittle-and-limp Winter that is right around the corner.
Honey is beneficial for the hair and scalp because its anti-inflammatory properties soothe the scalp. It also creates a moisture barrier on the hair. Honey is also a humectant which allows the hair to retain water and moisture, allowing it to hydrate hair while providing vitamins and minerals. Since honey is able to hold on to water, it is a great way to treat hair that is damaged and dry. Frizz is a concern at high priority on our lists.
Almond Oil is beneficial to the hair as well since it is high in vitamins A, B, D and E as well as potassium, magnesium, zinc and protein. It adds shine to dull hair as well as helps to encourage hair growth and nourishes the hair. Read my previous article on its benefits for hair and skin.

Carol’s Daughter just launched a new line of products made especially for curly, wavy and textured hair! This collection of restorative and hydrating hair products claim to give curls a new bounce, shine and better definition. The collection will be sold exclusively at ULTA stores nationwide and I was lucky enough to test the products out to review!
Carol’s Daughter says that “Lush curls inspire envy and awe on good-hair days, but unfortunately, once they start misbehaving, they quickly become dry, brittle, and utterly unmanageable. To pamper your curls and train them to spiral into long-lasting perfection, Carol’s Daughter has used the super-softening, rich Murula Oil in this new Marula Curl Therapy Collection. This rare ingredient, harvested in Madagascar, has been used by women there for more than 12,000 years to deeply nourish and make curls easy to manage. Each therapeutic product in the Marula Curl Therapy Collection is formulated to deeply rejuvenate each curl so they are trained to always be soft, shiny and beautifully free.”
Ingredients
Upon researching Marula Oil, I learned the oil is extracted from a fruit that grows on trees only in Madagascar and Southern Africa. Marula Oil has high levels of anti-oxidants including Vitamins E, A and C. The oil actually contains four times as much Vitamin C as an orange! It is also packed with Omegas which help deeply hydrate and nourish the hair. The Marula Oil in these products are said to help restore moisture and condition curls and waves that move and bounce.
Aside from Marula Oil, all of these products have Rose Oil which soothes frazzled curls and waves for improved softness and manageability, Manuka Honey which intensely conditions curls and waves for easier detangling and styling, and Almond Oil to deeply rehydrates curls and waves for glossy shine and flexibility.
Scent
As far as scent is concern, I AM OBSESSED. I have a particularly picky and somewhat sensitive nose so how products smell is a big deal for me. I can’t get my nose out of these bottles!!! All of the products have such a delicious delicate fresh scent that I can describe of a mix between baby powder and roses. Though not overwhelming, it is perfumey but I don’t mind it!! The smell doesn’t linger too long in my hair once it is dry.
Now for the products:
[prodmod]
Marula Gentle Cream Cleanser, $18.00
What They Say:
Start taming your curls by pampering them with this rich, gentle cream cleanser. Packed with conditioning Manuka Honey, this cleanser nourishes hair for easier detangling and styling. Marula Oil moisturizes and conditions hair for lively curls that move and bounce, and Rose Oil calms frazzled curls and waves to improve softness and manageability.
What I say:
This is more of a cleansing conditioner VS a shampoo as it is very rich and does not lather at all. I don’t mind the lack of lather and I like the lack of sulfates! It was easy to distribute through my hair and I was able to finger detangle a bit with it. I massaged it in my scalp and through my lengths, even concentrating on the ends for the frizz. It had great slip and when I rinsed it my hair felt clean but also nice and hydrated. I really like this cleanser!!
Marula Softening Hair Mask, $24.00
What They Say:
Give your hair the extra moisture it needs with this rejuvenating hair mask packed with rich Marula Oil to instantly restore and soften curls. Rose Oil calms crazy curls and waves, while nourishing Shea Butter deeply rehydrates each and every strand for covetable gloss and shine.
What I Say:
This product shocked me. I received a small jar of it and didn’t think it would be enough for my uber dry, long hair but not only was it enough- I still had some left after one use! It must be concentrated because a little goes a long way and I do NOT scrimp when applying conditioners to my hair. I was able to finger detangle and this mask had excellent slip. It’s perfectly thick- the right consistency to mush into my locks with no trouble. I left it on a half hour with a shower cap and when I rinsed it out, my now completely tangle free hair appeared to have more shine and felt suuppppeeerrrrr soft! Between how quick it detangled, how soft it left my hair and the smell from heaven, this mask really was like therapy for my curls. I wish I had enough left to give it a second go using heat or my steamer, because the way this performed just living in my hair for a half hour I can only imagine what it would do with the addition of heat or steam!
Marula Softening Serum, $18.00
What They Say:
This nutritious blend of hair-softening oils leaves you with glossy, well-behaved spirals that make any style easy to perfect. Restore your hair’s natural moisture with star ingredient Marula Oil and soothe frizzy curls with Rose Oil to make them soft and ultra-manageable. Deeply rehydrating Almond Oil gives you glossy shine and ultimate style flexibility.
What I Say:
This is a versatile Oil Serum that can be used in various ways. I slept with it in my hair as an overnight pre poo treatment one night and my hair truly felt softer after about 5 minutes. I also will use a little bit on day 2 or 3 hair to help frizz and add back some shine. I did try using this as a sealing oil on my wet hair after applying styling products, but it wasn’t a win for me as a sealer (my hair likes argan or coconut oils to seal”> This serum is lightweight and feels slick on my skin. I also have been rubbing some into my nail cuticles throughout the day and it leaves me hands soft and delicious smelling.
Marula Diffusing & Styling Lotion, $20.00
What They Say:
Control your curls while keeping them soft and defined with this creamy styling lotion. Conditioning Marula Oil and moisture-enhancing Almond Oil leave hair hydrated, healthy, and super shiny. Vegetable Protein adds supreme definition to curls and waves for perfectly styled hair that is never stiff or dry.
What I Say:
I don’t diffuse my hair unless it is usually freezing and winter time so I can’t really speak for how well it works with a diffuser. Having lightened color treated hair, I like the fact this lotion has protein in it to restore my damage. I used this on my wet hair after showering and applying a leave in. Consistency wise, it is not super runny like a lot of milks but it also is not super thick like say a pudding or cream. It’s right in the middle which I find perfect for applying to my wet hair section by section. My waves did have nice definition and they felt soft, but there was still a bit more frizz than I cared for. My hair usually doesn’t perform its best using only lotions on wet hair with no gel over it, so I was honestly not completely surprised at this. It would make a nice lotion to use under a gel since there was minimal hold. Maybe a Curl Therapy Gel will be released in the future?
Watch the Video
In conclusion I was pretty impressed and happy with the new Marula Curl Therapy Line by Carol’s Daughter. The products are nourishing and hydrating, yet also made my hair somehow feel lighter! I liked the softness, shine and curl definition but they did not rid my hair of frizz completely. I think these are a good option for all kinds of curls, even finer haired people who may usually get weighed down. It is important for me to mention that for those strictly following the Curly Girl Method, these are not CG approved products.
