What Would Happen If You Went a Week Without Hair Product?
Would you wear your hair naked for a week? As in, free of washing, conditioning, or any styling product in your hair whatsoever? Truthfully speaking, would you do it?

If a horse saw my hair with no products, he might try to eat it–you know, because it looks like hay! When I first heard about wearing ‘naked hair’ I thought to myself, oh, no way! And although there are days that I don’t put any product in, it is usually no more than Day Three hair so, technically, my hair will still have Day One hair products in it. and it also results in a messy bun is. So is it worth it to wear your hair naked and give it a break once in awhile? Read on to learn about the benefits of giving yourself a naked hair detox for a week and how I feel about this matter.

The pros

1. You will get a break. Giving your hair and scalp some time off from constant product application may allow your hair to reset itself; once you return to your regular regimen, you may find your hair is more manageable and or agreeable with products it was not prior to your naked week.

2. It will be easier to pinpoint the annoying reactions of specific products. If you use several styling at a time on a regular basis, resetting your hair will help you find out which one of them has been aggravating your hair or scalp lately or giving you an allergic reaction.

3. You might like your unaltered hair more! If you have not worn your hair completely natural in as long as you can remember, you might actually like the result. Especially if you have been taking care of hair with the use of regular deep treatments and beneficial products, the results of a break from them may surprise you.

4. You might eliminate some styling product steps. After wearing your hair naked for a bit and then add products back to your regimen gradually, you might find some of them were not really doing much. If you can eliminate some products, you can save some time and money.

The cons

I do have some concerns about wearing my hair naked, and these are 100% solely my opinion based. Here they are:

1. You will have puffy, frizzy hair. If your hair is not the healthiest, wearing your it naked may result in it puffy, frizzy curls. Sure, you can always tie it back to tame it for the duration of Naked Hair Week, but I personally wouldn’t want to go outside into the humidity with no products in my hair.

2. You will be lacking moisture. As someone with extremely dry wavy curls, going without a leave-in conditioner might make your natural wavy or curly hair feel terribly dry. Since my hair is constantly thirsty–as most curls are since it takes so long for the natural oils from the scalps to reach the ends–I rely on them for moisturization.

3. You may put yourself at risk for split ends. Sealing my hair with an oil, and using a heat protectant in the winter helps protect my delicate, weak ends from splitting. Going naked to me would be just that- going naked, being completely exposed. I feel like this would make my ends even more susceptible to splitting.

4. You will need a clarifying shampoo and The Curly Girl Method. Some may argue that wearing naked hair more often can help with product build-up, and I understand that viewpoint. But if I use a clarifying shampoo regularly–my favorite is Ouidad Superfruit Renewal Clarifying Shampoo–and if I also follow the Curly Girl Method, using styling products without silicones or other ingredients known to cause build-up, I think my hair is just fine.

Naked hair: is it worth it?

Wearing your hair naked has its benefits, and some curlies enjoy their completely unaltered pattern–which is wonderful! But personally, the only way this will happen is if I do not have to leave my house for an entire week.

Have you ever worn your hair naked? Would you consider it now? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

My Briogeo Gel-to-Oil Overnight Repair Treatment Review

Briogeo has been around for quite some time now and as a fan of theirs since the beginning, I have watched the brand expand in both their popularity and product offerings. As someone who has been loving their signature Don’t Despair, Repair Mask, I was ecstatic to see them expand the line with an Overnight Repair Treatment from the franchise!

Why I love the Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair line

What makes Briogeo special is the ingredients it includes, and the ones it chooses to exclude. Each item in their brand is infused with their exclusive NOVA complex which is a “professionally cocktailed blend of potent natural oils, vitamins and antioxidants,” according to the company’s website. They never contains sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, DEA, or artificial dyes. Ingredients matter, and these formulations not only provides styling benefits, but also keeps hair healthier in the long run. Not to mention, it is cruelty-free, gluten-free and vegan.

Gel-To-Oil Overnight Repair Treatment Key Ingredients

  • Rosehip Oil: Maintains hydration and controls frizz.
  • Argan Oil: Provides extensive conditioning, helps combat dryness and damage, and diminishes frizz.
  • Coconut Alkanes: Acts as a natural humectant to deliver intense hydration to the hair, seal in moisture, and protect from breakage.
  • Algae Extract: Nourishes and strengthens the hair, protecting the scalp from free radical damage.

What the brand claims

“This nutrient-rich hair treatment gel melts into an oil to release Briogeo’s signature NOVA complex in its purest, most potent state. This complex encapsulates a reparative blend of natural oils, vitamins, and antioxidants which prevents oxidation, thereby exposing hair to fresh nutrients as the formula melts down upon use. A unique blend of biotin, argan oil, rosehip oil, algae extract, and coconut alkanes strengthens hair, replenishes moisture, and increases elasticity to make hair more resistant to breakage, while enhancing shine and luster as your sleep.”

Why I love it

It comes with a pump.

I have a love for pumps because they help control how much product comes out so I can make sure I evenly coat all the sections of my hair equally.

It doubles as an overnight treatment.

I love that I am able to treat my hair overnight without making a mess of my pillows. I slept with coconut oil in my hair for the longest–until I noticed it was staining my pillowcases. My fiancé wasn’t thrilled with it either so I needed a better solution, and this is it.

My hair absorbs this formula so well.

It leaves no stains and no mess on my bedding or clothing.

Finally, the results!

When I go to cleanse my hair the next day, I notice less hair in the shower which is great. The whole Don’t Despair, Repair franchise from Briogeo actually helps with breakage with consistent use. Even after cleansing and conditioning, my hair feels so silky.

This treatment helps my hair become more manageable with nice curl definition.

Sometimes, if my ends look extra unruly (since they are still colored and I’m due for a trim”>, I will use a pump or two on dry ends even if I do not plan on washing for a few more days. It tames them without leaving my hair greasy at all. As far as consistency goes, I describe this treatment as a lightweight, non-sticky, oil-serum. It falls somewhere between a runny oil and a thick gel.

How I use it

I use it once every other week, or every week depending on how my hair is behaving. I also use it based on my hair’s mood, and determine if I should follow it up with a regular conditioner. I might go for the Double Duo Treatment and use the mask afterwards. I suggest the duo if you have an event or something special to go to because you will have such an incredible hair day after using both of them, but you get benefits from either alone. I apply before bedtime using one pump per section of my hair, for a total of seven sections. Based on how damaged or healthy your hair is, you may need to adjust the amount of pumps needed.

To sum it up

The Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Gel-To-Oil Overnight Repair Treatment has become a staple in my hair care regimen and if you are looking overnight hair benefits that won’t make a mess, you have to check it out! Find it here.

16 Telltale Signs You’re Dating a Curly Girl

So, you’re dating a curly girl? Consider yourself lucky!

PHOTO COURTESY OF OUR VIDEO PRODUCTION MANAGER @NCHANEL

We’re unique and special in so many ways, and not just our hair. How do you know you’re dating one of us? Here are some signs…

1. You find strands of curls here, there, and everywhere.

It’s because we shed–a lot. Don’t freak out though, curly girls; it is completely normal to lose about 100 strands of hair a day.

2. You are familiar with terms your boys don’t know.

These words include co-wash, deep treatment, LCO Method, and have somewhat of an understanding on why sulfates are bad and coconut oil is good.

3. You assist in her extreme measures when it is raining outside.

Why yes, that is a plastic grocery bag over her head because she does not need her hair to frizz and pouf out horizontally. Thanks.

4. You ‘pet’ her head as opposed to running your fingers through her length.

Fine, she’s letting you pet your hair today, but if your fingers go in between the strands it will disrupt her curl pattern, leading to frizz and one cranky girlfriend to deal with.

5. You know what a hair steamer is.

You’ve also had conversations about the which micro-fiber towel and Curly Girl-friendly products would make wonderful gifts for her.

6. You have learned to love her satin bonnet at bedtime look.

Since you love her and want her hair to look good the next day, and also, you realize that it’s better than the alternative of possibly getting smothered to death by all her hair all night long.

7. You know not washing her hair daily does not mean she is dirty in any way, shape or form.

8. You are wise enough to compliment her after she finally gets a blowout.

However, you are even wiser to know not to tell her you prefer this look over her natural curls.

9. You know that she possibly has more hair products in her house currently then you may have used in your whole lifetime.

10. You know far better than to ever compare her hair to a cheap brand of soup noodles.

11. You love the mystery of how her hair turns out each day.

Better yet, you know why her hair may never look the same twice, even if she uses all the same products applied the exact same way.

12. You are no longer astounded with how much faster conditioner gets used up before shampoo.

13. You understand how long and tedious Wash Day can be.

Still, you also know she knows what she is doing so you no longer question her process.

14. You aren’t going to bug her about leaving the house with half wet hair in warmer weather.

It no longer phases you since you know it takes her hair hours to air dry and air drying is healthy for her hair.

15. She loves trying new products constantly, and as a result, you enjoy the variety of pretty fragrance in her hair.

16. If you also happen to have textured hair, you will probably never have to buy hair products for yourself ever again.

On the flip side, if you have straight, oily, and really fine hair, it can be a bit sad to see all of these hair products that she has and know every single one will only weigh your hair down and not work for you.

Pantene Reformulated Its Shampoo, We Want to Know What You Think

pantene pro-v new shampoo formula

After over a decade of research, world famous drugstore brand, Pantene, just reformulated most of their shampoos.

The brand’s reformulation includes a proprietary blend of pro vitamins, antioxidants, and tiny lipids infused into the shampoo formulas and designed to improve smoothness, softness, and add shine to the hair without weighing it down.

Many shampoos strip away essential hair moisture and fat, along with the dirt and oil they remove while cleansing. Pantene set out to fix this problem with a focus on a groundbreaking, unique ingredient reformulation.

“The lipid-based ingredient is the standout here—I’ve never seen it in hair care before,” says cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson. “Chemically, it should offer the best of both worlds—cleansing well while keeping hair’s moisture.”

The lipids slip under the hair cuticle as you rinse to replace essential fatty acids that are usually lost to suds. Allure’s testers, who had the chance to try the newly reformulated shampoos, reported that “even our most highlighted testers noticed that their hair felt softer and less snarled (before conditioner”> after a single wash.”

The formula does still contain sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate and dimethicone, which will rule it out for sulfate-free and silicone-free curly customers, but we know there are plenty of curlies who use these ingredients without issue or use them sparingly.

What do you think?

We know that curly and coily hair are most vulnerable to the damage and dryness that harsh cleansers can inflict on fragile strands, so we are most interested in hearing from you, our community, on what you think of the formula. Products formulated specifically for curly hair tend to be found at higher price points than those for straight, and drugstore products are still a mainstay in many of the bathroom cabinets of our editors and readers.

We want to know, does the new Pantene Pro-V formula dry out your hair, or does it leave your strands softer and smoother without weighing you down?

How to Stop Your Second-Day Hair from Looking Like Stringy Noodles

One of the biggest challenges of having loose curls and wavy hair is that our fantastic definition on Day One Hair can turn into stringy looking noodles by Day Three. Still, as naturally curly girls, we certainly do not want to wash our hair daily, so we have to figure out another way to add that bounce back to our definition.

Enter: the foamy mousse

I usually wash my hair twice a week, but I want it to look good as many days as I possibly can. While I enjoy refreshing my curls with a refreshing mist and my beloved Q-Redew, I randomly stumbled upon the benefits of using a mousse on days-old dry hair.

If, like me, hearing the word ‘mousse’ automatically takes your mind to the ‘80s and the decade of hair metal bands, I can affirm that this styling product has come such a long way since then. The mousse of today is foamier, does not leave the hair crunchy or stiff, and contains some great treatment ingredients inside.

Keep in mind the complexity of wavy hair

My wavy hair tends to be more on the dry, high porosity side and does not get weighed down as easily as other wavies’ hair might–keep this in mind when deciding the amount of product you need to apply in your hair. Trial and error, and adjust accordingly since no two heads of hair are exactly the same, even if the pattern may look similar. To give a quick example, some of my wavy friends like to use mousse on wet hair as their only styler and their hair turns out great, but mousse alone on wet hair is not enough hold for me. Occasionally I like mousse on wet hair to add in more definition, but I ALWAYS have to follow it with a gel.

Why it works

What I find when using a mousse on old hair on a day is that I only need that and a dry shampoo for my scalp, especially if I worked out that day. If I used a refreshing mist, more than likely I will need to layer over a moisturizing cream so that my hair does not re-pouf out. I may also switch out a cream for an oil blend to further combat the frizz and add shine.

Application

I apply the mousse on wet hair similarly to how I like to apply my styling products on wet hair. For seven total sections I take two pumps of mousse each section, raking them through and then scrunch them up. Once I did this to all my sections, I let the product dry and my waves have more bounce again, frizz is gone and with some of them I have a lot of added shine.

My current favorite mousses for wavy hair:

DevaCurl Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam

This alcohol-free foam smells like candy while leaving waves defined, shiny and frizz free thanks to sunflower and lemongrass extracts.

Raw Curls Mousse

This mousse contains 100% natural and organic ingredients plus plant based UV protection and antioxidants. It’s extremely lightweight, yet concentrated so a little goes a long way.

SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Styling Mousse

There is so much goodness in this mousse including Shea Butter, Coconut Water, a Fruit Fusion blend of Dragon Fruit, Lychee Berry and Green Apple Extracts, Imbe Oil and Aloe! This lightweight smoothie for your hair will add shine, fight frizz and re-encourage definition in waves without weighing them down.

Yes, This Hair Bonnet Doubles As a Deep Conditioning Shower Cap
An all-in-one product that protects hair while your sleep, in the shower, and during deep treatments?

Yes, this is a product that actually exists–meet the All Caps Hair Protector. Not just your average hair bonnet, because it is so much better than that! Not to mention, the line is made in the USA and is environmentally friendly too.

What the brand says about their cap

“All Caps is a soft, flexible cap that easily adjusts to the size of your head and length of your hair for a more comfortable, customized fit. It features innovative fabric technology to protect hair in the shower, at the spa, and even in bed. The reversible design also keeps clothes, furniture, pillowcases, and other surfaces mess-free while doing hair masks and other restorative treatments, like Keratin. And unlike your past shower caps, All Caps is fungus-resistant and machine washable.”

The brand describes the interior as a “silky, low-friction fabric [that] helps prevent breakage, reduces static, and protects hair from creasing or falling flat. And the exterior is soft, whisper-quiet, and environmentally friendly PolyUrethane is waterproof, hypoallergenic, and fungus-resistant.”

My initial thoughts

  • The size: Not only is this cap big enough to fit all of my hair inside, but the best part is the fact that it has stretchy cords so that it can rest comfortably on my head without digging into my skin and causing a bad tension headache (I cannot tell you how many shower caps and sleep bonnets had a tight elastic band inside that just plain hurt”>. This feature alone truly makes the cap purchase worth it for me.
  • The band: It is surrounded by a microfiber terry cloth material that can absorb up to 8 times its weight in 2 seconds.
  • The material: Inside and outside, the reversible cap is unique due to its loops and buttons, which will help you keep the cap off your neck without ruining your hairstyle or disrupting your curl pattern.
  • The traveling perk: For your convenience, the brand includes a nice travel friendly bag for the cap to travel in with you.

My final review

I have slept in the cap a few times now and it is nice to wake up without my hair looking or feeling like a complete disaster. I have also replaced my every day shower cap with it because this one actually stays on my head better–I do not have to worry about conditioner dripping down my neck or forehead as much. It is super easy to clean in the washing machine and does not stretch out super fast like cheapie drugstore shower caps we are all used to using. The All Caps Hair Protector far exceeded my expectations and now that I have it, I don’t want to be without it!

Ouidad Deep Treatment Curl Restoration Therapy Review on Naturally Wavy Hair
Unless your hair is extremely protein sensitive, I truly believe this is a product any curl type and texture can benefit from, so I want to tell you more about it!

The Ouidad Curl Restoration Therapy Deep Treatment has been a Holy Grail of mine for nearly a decade now.

No matter what other products I try and test, I always go back to this. I have been using the deep treatment through several label and name changes, but thankfully the magical formula inside always remained the same. Unless your hair is extremely protein sensitive, I truly believe this is a product any curl type and texture can benefit from, so I want to tell you more about it!

Key Product Benefits

  • Rebuilds and fortifies the inner structure of curls

  • Nourishes to help reduce frizz and unwanted volume

  • Helps to regain curls’ internal weight and strength for improved shape and definition

The Ouidad Curl Restoration Therapy Deep Treatment is full of amino acids and proteins that help rebuild the hair and make it strong while improving its elasticity and definition. It also works to fight frizz and increase shine. You only need to add heat to the treatment for 12 minutes, although I do leave it on for up to 30 minutes sometimes.

It’s full of proteins

Another important note regarding this treatment: since it is protein heavy to repair the hair, you must seal it with a moisturizing, nourishing conditioner. You can really use any brand for this step, but I fell in love with using the Ouidad Curl Immersion Triple Treat Deep Conditioner on top for maximum moisture and replenishment. Not using something moisturizing on top of the Restoration Deep Treatment may result in your hair feeling a bit stiff due to protein overload.

A few times a year I visit Jason Hallman, a renowned hairstylist at the Ouidad Flagship Salon in NYC for a trim. Jason says “the reason why deep treatment is crucial because curly hair lacks sebum. The sebum gets trapped at the curvature of the curl at the root, so usually the mid shaft and ends are susceptible to extreme dryness and the cuticle being raised. Deep Treatment Curl Restoration Therapy is made of the same protein and amino acids that hair is made of–it’s basically food for the hair, giving the curl internal weight which would make it bouncier less dry and control the frizz.”

How I use the treatment

  1. I cleanse my hair using a clarifying shampoo to remove any product or build-up so the treatment can really penetrate in my cleanest, purest hair possible. I usually go with Ouidad Superfruit Clarifying Cream Shampoo because although it clarifies, it is still sulfate-free and does not dry out my hair. Plus, it smells like berries!

  1. I generously apply the Curl Restoration Therapy Deep Treatment section by section for seven sections total, making sure to fully saturate my strands. I twist each section up into mini buns before sitting under my tabletop hood dryer for somewhere between 12 and 20 minutes. Sometimes, if parts of my hair do not feel warm, when I take out my mini buns I will hit the length of my hair with my regular dryer to ensure all my hair did get heat for the treatment.

  1. With the Curl Restoration Therapy Deep Treatment still in my hair, I apply the moisturizing conditioner, mostly Ouidad Curl Immersion Triple Treat Deep Conditioner, on top and let the combo sit anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour depending on how much time I have.

  1. I get back in the shower and rinse most of it out with cool water, leaving some in especially on my ends.

How often I use this treatment depends on two things

It depends on how my hair is behaving and time of year. On average I use it about twice a month regularly, but I generally listen to what my hair is telling me it needs. Some signs that tell me it may be time to use the treatment include extra frizz that cannot be tamed, brittle ‘hay-like’ ends even if I am not due for a trim, my hair feeling dry despite conditioning, and my wave pattern just overall being unmanageable.

Remember this when using any treatment with heat

It is also important to mention that with this treatment, or any treatment using heat, you do not want to use it three days prior or ten days after getting color put into your hair. I have not colored my hair in 1 year and 9 months so now I do not have to worry about that. If you use the heat too close to your protein treatment it may affect your color since it opens up the cuticle for the treatment.

Note: This post is not sponsored or endorsed by Ouidad in any way, shape or form. Ouidad just makes some of my favorite curly products!

5 Steps for Detangling Damaged Wavy Hair
There are ways to detangle your curls effectively without harming them.

Many factors contribute to having damaged hair including dye, chemicals, daily manipulation and everyday environmental factors like the sun and wind. When you have texture to your hair, you know you have to go easy during the detangling process. If your wavy hair is damaged, being extra gentle is imperative. There are ways to detangle your curls effectively without harming them.

Why detangle?

Effectively detangling your hair prior to styling will help leave your hair knot-free, remove stray hairs from shedding that are stuck together. Keeping in mind that it is normal to lose about 100 hairs a day from shedding, you can prevent even more hair loss, matting, and sticking with these steps.

1. Use a cleansing conditioner.

This helps rid your hair of any styling products or build-up while adding in moisture and hydration. Wavy hair, try Ouidad Curl Immersion Coconut Co-Wash.

2. Saturate your hair with a deep conditioner.

Damaged wavy hair needs to use a deep conditioner at least once a week to nurse it back to health. Try Original Moxie Intense Quench Deep Conditioner which has a unique blend of botanicals, herbs, proteins, and emollients that enhance shine, softness and strength in wavy hair.

3. Gently finger detangle, starting from the bottom.

Without rinsing the deep conditioner out, it is detangling time. A proper deep conditioner gives added slip, aiding in the detangling process. I use my fingers to detangle my own waves. By doing so, I can feel any knots or snarls right away. If you do not want to use your fingers, use a wide tooth comb for assistance. However, stay away from a brush or fine tooth comb, as they can cause more damage and breakage.

Detangle in sections, and start from the bottom. This may be the most important of all the detangling tips. How many sections you create is a personal preference, but I usually have two in bottom back, one on each side, the top of the back of my head and then my two front hairline sections. If your hair gets extra knotty, creating more sections might be helpful. If you immediately start at the root of your hair and try to detangle all the way down, any knots, snarls or tangles will bunch up down the length, resulting in breakage and the potential for more damage. Detangling from the bottom may be more time consuming, but it is worth it.

4, Let your deep conditioner sit for about an hour.

Once you have detangled all of your hair, you may want to add some more deep conditioner, letting it sit for up to an hour. Then, rinse most of it out–damaged wavy hair should leave some of their deep conditioner on the ends as a leave-in. This will continue to intensely moisturize and treat the hair.

5. Style as usual with your favorite styling products.

Lately my hair has been loving DevaCurl Wave Maker.

  • Optional: Some people like to pre-poo their wavy hair with an oil treatment. If your wavy hair is damaged, this can make detangling much easier followed by conditioning. Saturate your hair and scalp with a good oil blend such as the Jane Carter Solution Healthy Hair Complex 4 Replenish and Repair Oil, which will allow your fingers to glide through. Additionally, the Maraca, Sunflower and Coconut oils will help further treat dry, damaged hair.

How do you detangle your wavy hair?

‘Movember’ And ‘No Shave November’ Are Not Exactly What You Think
Have you noticed the men in your life are sprouting more facial hair than usual lately?
natural hair man with beard
PICTURED: @Johnathancelestin by @don_harris202

Have you noticed the men in your life are sprouting more facial hair than usual lately? No Shave November or Movember may be the reason behind it. If you are unfamiliar with it, these are charities set up to bring awareness to several issues causing men to die way too soon.

Per the official site, No Shave November is a unique way to grow cancer awareness.

It says that “The goal of No-Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Donate the money you typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle.” You can sign up to participate at no-shave.org and even create your own personal fundraising page to raise money for the cause. To date, the organization has raised over $2 million dollars.

The Movember Foundation was also set up to “help men live happier, healthier, longer lives through investing in three key areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.” Since their start in 2003, they’ve raised $710 million and helped fund 1,200 breakthrough men’s health programs in 21 countries. The foundation encourages men to grow mustaches for the month of November to spark conversation and bring awareness to the issue. The goal is to have men and women commit to get active–or move–throughout the month.

If you are a male growing a beard for No Shave November, you definitely want to keep your new facial hair in tip top shape.

The hair and skin on the face and beard is different from the hair and skin on the head, so it is important to use proper products and treat them as so. If you use hair care products designed for the hair from your scalp on your beard, your beard is not reaching its full potential. According to Beardbrand, “facial hair will grow in thicker and flatter than head hair. This means beards are coarser and curlier than the head hair counterparts.”

Black Label Beard says the difference between caring for beards and not caring is that “Neglected beards will feel itchy, scratchy, dry, and look wiry. Well-kept beards will look clean, straight, and will grow from being well moisturized and healthy.”

SheaMoisture, which has insanely popular products for all hair types, just released a new line in the Men’s Grooming category to help your beard be the best it can be. The Three Butters Beard Softener and Skin Protector contains sandalwood, coconut and jojoba oils to soften the beard and help sooth any irritation and inflammation on the skin. BeardBrand also has various products to care for your beard, with oils to soften and waxes to style, as well as beard washes and even shave soaps.

Do you know, or are you a man who participates in No Shave November or Movember?

What positive impact, if any have you noticed? Let me know in the comments below.

Every Wavy Girl NEEDS These 5 Tools For Better Definition
These tools are a must for better natural wave formation.

Type 2 wavy hair is beautiful once you learn what works well with it. Of course, the products you use are important, but there are also some tools necessary for helping to make the styling process easier and faster, as well as leaving waves feeling healthier.

Q-Redew

The summertime and humidity gives my waves such lovely definition, but as the weather gets colder and drier, they can sometimes fall limp. I love using the Q-Redew portable handheld steamer on day two and three hair in cold weather to enhance the natural definition in my strands while adding moisture. This tool is a must for those who work out and need to make that dreaded ponytail dent disappear in a hurry. Throughout the years, I have found this, paired with DevaCurl Set It Free Moisture Spray, to make the ultimate duo. If I want to add steam to my deep treatment and allow the product to penetrate even deeper, I turn to the Q-Redew.

Ricky’s NYC No-Crease Clips

These clips are such a must. Not only is my hairline curlier than the rest of my head but on top of that, the square-shaped curls are not cute. Enter Ricky’s NYC No-Crease Clips. They come in a variety of shapes, and my favorite is the signature Ricky’s logo tubes. I clip them along my hairline while drying and stretching my hair. When I remove them, I am not left with the obvious clip marks once I remove them. Brilliant!

T3 Featherweight Luxe 21 Dryer

I prefer air drying whenever possible, but it takes hours. When I am short on time or if it is too cold out for leaving the house with wet hair, I blow dry. Currently, I use the T3 Featherweight Luxe 2I Dryer with the Deva Fuser attachment. Per the T3micro.com website, the dryer is “infused with Tourmaline SoftAire technology, responsible for quick, healthy drying, and an ion generator for its frizz-reducing, gloss-boosting power.”

DevaFuser

The Deva Fuser is my favorite diffuser. Devacurl.com says “This unique, universal diffuser delivers 360-degree airflow to completely surround curls even at your roots. The patented DevaFuser design enhances the appearance of natural curls, dries curly hair faster than traditional diffusers, while creating extreme body and touchable volume.” Though sadly nothing seems to dry my hair too fast, I like it because I notice significantly less frizz and pouf when I use it vs. blow drying with typical bowl diffusers.

The Original Curly Tee Towel

After showering and applying my styling products, I like to wrap my hair in this towel. Its unique shape ensures that mine will stay put while I do my skin care and body care regimens. The 100% pure jersey knit material allows the towel to absorb excess water without disturbing my hair or products applied, leading to less frizz and more manageability.

T3 Source Hand-Held Shower Filter

I have been using the T3 Hand-Held for more than three years now. Since then, my hair and skin have felt softer; my hair looks shinier as well. According to the site, the filter “removes 95% of chlorine and other impurities… transforming chlorine into harmless elements that are too large to be absorbed by hair and skin. The result is a noticeable improvement in hair health, hair color retention and even skin hydration. It’s the simplest and most effective way to make a clean sweep in your beauty routine.” If your hair has been stubbornly unmanageable and frizzy despite the products you use, the water coming out of your showerhead might be the problem.

Here’s What I Thought of the new DevaCurl Products Made for Wavy Hair
I have been beyond excited to see some of my favorite brands come out with products specifically for type 2 wavies like myself.

” src=”https://diana-cdn.naturallycurly.com/Articles/6O_pjimage-77.jpg”>

When DevaCurl released a wavy cleanser, conditioner and styler earlier this year, I could not wait to get my hands on them. I had to find out if they perform as well as they claim. Read on for more. There are some great ingredients inside these products to really help make the most out of our waves. These include:
  • Chia-flaxseed extract blend to enhance waves, add shine, and control frizz.
  • Rice protein to add body and fullness.
  • Lotus flower: to give waves bounce and vibrancy.

Like all DevaCurl products, these are sulfate, silicone, gluten, paraben and cruelty-free as well as vegan-friendly.

Delight Low-Poo

Product claims

“The balanced, lightweight formula cleanses the scalp and hair while fighting frizz and oiliness. Great for a thorough yet gentle cleanse, it’s made with rice protein for body and fullness, lotus flower for bounce, and a chia-flaxseed extract blend for defined waves that last.”

What I say

This product smells citrusy, like lemon. It is bright and awakening. I prefer DevaCurl’s Low-Poos to their No-Poos because of their light lather. It left my hair feeling clean and soft, not stiff or squeaky. Although the consistency was a bit runny, I did not need to use more than a quarter size amount of product for my hair. This is a wonderful cleanser!

One Condition Delight

Product Claims

“Give strands the perfect amount of hydration. The light, moisturizing formula—made with rice protein, lotus flower, and a chia-flaxseed blend—fights frizz, detangles, and sets you up for a defined, wavy look that lasts. Hair is left nourished, vibrant, and smooth.”

What I Say

This has the same scent as the shampoo. I was concerned this conditioner would not be moisturizing enough for me since my waves are notoriously dry. However, the product actually made detangling easy–I massaged it into my hair with my fingers in the shower to help make sure my hair really absorbed it all.

Speaking on consistency, One Condition Delight was not runny, but also not thick. It did a great job at leaving my hair feeling hydrated but I did need quite a bit of product–my wavy hair drank it up.

I did not rinse this conditioner out all out. Instead, I quickly splashed some water onto the roots and left at least 80% of the product in my hair as a leave-in for added moisture. I like this conditioner even though I do still rotate it out with something heavier–usually a masque–since my hair craves so much moisture. After rinsing the masque out completely, I apply the Delight Conditioner as a leave-in.

Wave Maker

Product Claims

“A lightweight, whipped formula for touchable, wavy texture that lasts all day. This light and airy whip, made with moringa seed and passion flower extracts, gives consistent waves and frizz control every time you use it. Hair is left smooth, healthy-looking, and delicately scented. Provides touchable texture that lasts.”

What I Say

The scent of this is incredibly yummy, fruity and juicy like Skittles, and I was a bit sad that it did not linger.  Wave Maker was awesome. The product is lightweight with an airy and creamy consistency. It never felt sticky, tacky or heavy, and I did not need a lot at a time. It helped bring out the definition in my waves while leaving them, soft, shiny and frizz-free. Not only did I feel like I did not have styling product in my hair, even when my hair was wet, it surprisingly felt lighter than usual. This cream made it onto my Holy Grail list because every time I use it, I get consistently great results. I prefer sealing it with either an oil or DevaCurl MirrorCurls for more shine and frizz-fighting power.

When I use the DevaCurl Delight Low-Poo, One Condition and Wave Maker, I noticed some of the best wave definition my hair has ever achieved on day one. Day two and three hair had nice definition–even after sleeping and working out. I also needed to do less to my hair to refresh it than I normally would.

” src=”https://diana-cdn.naturallycurly.com/Articles/sa_pjimage-78.jpg”>

To sum it up

Overall, I love the incredible definition, texture, shine and lack of frizz in my hair using DevaCurl Delight & Wave Maker. If you have wavy hair that is prone to frizz and crave more definition, definitely give these a try.

Soothe Your Chemical Burn With This Homemade Scalp Salve
Chemical scalp burns are usually caused by hair products such as dyes, bleaches or relaxers.
photo courtesy of TomFullum- Getty Images
Minor irritation and redness are common when getting hair processes done, but severe burns deep into the skin are a rare occurrence. However, chemical burns on the scalp can cause hair to break and stop growing in burned areas.

Scar tissue can form. The extent of the burn depends on the amount of chemical used, the amount of time the skin was exposed to the hair chemical and other factors. In this article I will explain a few ways to treat a burn at home, but it is important to note that some burns require professional medical help. It is best to seek the advice of a medical professional who can see and assess your individual burn first.

Do you still feel heat in the area of the burn?

The damage can continue even when you are no longer in contact with the item that burned you in the first place. That’s why running a burn under cold water feels so good, because it’s actually cooling the affected area. However, do NOT place ice on the burn, as it changes the temperature of the tissues too quickly and can incur further damage.

If the chemical is a solid or a dust, brush your scalp off immediately–don’t use your fingers, or they can get burned, too. You may be able to flush a liquid burn with water and using a cloth to dry. Be mindful of potential chemical reactions and side effects. Some chemicals may react with water to release toxic compounds or worsen a burn. Dowsing pure sodium with water, for instance, can even start a fire! Protect yourself by reading labels to determine reactivity. Seek medical attention if you have to.

If you can flush the area with water, do so copiously.

  • Remove earrings, hairpins, hats and other items that may have come in contact with the chemical.
  • Pay particular attention to the eyes.
  • Dress the area in loose-fitting, dry bandages and observe.
  • Use appropriate ointments to treat peeling, itching, and blistering.

3 Steps to sooth the burn

1. Remove the heat source and run the burn under cold water for at least 30 seconds.

2. Rinse the burn with white or apple cider vinegar. Dab pure white or apple cider vinegar over the affected area.

3. Apply a burn cream or other healing salve with gauze, a clean towel or t-shirt.

Why vinegar helps

Weak acetic acid in vinegar balances the damaged skin’s pH, which accelerates healing and skin regeneration. This also reduces the amount of scar tissue. Did you know there is a patent filed stating that the mixture of any citrus juice and salt has been shown to “stop pain on contact, prevent blistering, cause the tissue to remain elastic, promote healing and prevent infection”?

Certain salves and ointments will help, too. Aquaphor is an affordable and effective option available at Target or Walgreens. Josie Maran Argan Balm is a good option for those who take the natural but store-bought route. Nourishing Joy shares a DIY recipe that is 100% natural.

coconut and raw honey treatment

DIY scalp burn salve

  • 1/4 cup raw honey, preferably Manuka honey
  • 1/4 cup unrefined coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon beeswax
  • 1 tablespoon Sea Buckthorn oil, optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon aloe vera gel, aloe vera juice, or rosewater

Why this works

Raw Honey is antibacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory, but must be in its raw state to be of use in wound healing. For burns, honey is especially useful because it stimulates new tissue growth, soothes the skin, and prevents primary infection (according to Livestrong“>. Raw Manuka honey is notably more effective, so much so that the FDA has actually approved one Manuka honey wound dressing for use in the US. (In fact, if you’d prefer not to make your own burn salve, you can find the 100% Manuka honey Medihoney Wound Dressing at your local pharmacy or on Amazon.”> Coconut oil accelerates skin regeneration and stimulates collagen production within the tissue being repaired. It also  feels deeply soothing. Beeswax is used in this application largely as a firming agent, but it also locks in moisture and protects the skin while it heals. Beeswax also holds many of the same antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties as honey, so it is beneficial for burn healing in its own right. Sea Buckthorn oil contains more Vitamin E than any other oil and contains a high percentage of essential fatty acids, which makes it highly valuable as a cosmetic and rejuvenating component in healing and anti-aging creams. It is highly emollient and is very easily assimilated and absorbed by the skin. Aloe vera and Rosewater provide a deeply soothing sensation when rubbed on a minor burn (sunburn in particular”> and aid in pain management.

Directions

1.Heat the beeswax over low heat in a small saucepan or double boiler. 2. Add in the coconut oil and melt completely once the beeswax is nearly melted. 3. Stir in the honey and sea buckthorn oil and whisk over the heat only until the whole mixture is one uniform liquid. 4. Remove from the heat and either pour directly into tins or other containers OR stir in the aloe or rosewater briskly until the mixture is completely homogenous, then pour into your containers. 5. Let the mix sit until comfortable to touch before using. It should fully harden in approximately 6 to 12 hours. For an extra healing boost, infuse the oils with healing herbs before making the recipe. Comfrey and plantain are especially good options.
South Asia’s (Not So Secret) Miracle Ingredient

Almond oil is a pure and natural substance with no chemicals that softens, nourishes, and strengthens hair and skin.

south asian woman with curly hairThe almond is a drupe–not an actual ‘nut’ by definition–which calls the Middle East and South Asia home. This beauty miracle started making its way along the Mediterranean through Africa, Europe, and eventually the United States. Now almond oil is in many of our hair and beauty products. It is a pure and natural substance with no chemicals that softens, nourishes, and strengthens hair and skin.

Adds sheen

Almond oil contains a high concentration of proteins and vitamins A, B and E, all of which help add shine to dull, dry hair. Additionally, fatty acids omega 9, 6, and 3 help to reflect damaging UV rays. It also forms a thin, oily layer on the hair which protects it from sun damage.

Fights breakage

Vitamins A, B, and E and fatty acids omega 9, omega 6 and omega 3 keep hair strong and healthy, preventing against breakage and split ends. Almond oil is a great sealant on wet hair over stylers and can also be used on day 2 hair and beyond, concentrating on the ends, to help hold in moisture in and further protect the fragile length.

Nourishes dryness

Almond oil is extremely nourishing to not only the lengths of the hair but the roots as well. Because almond oil is lighter, it’s also an excellent option for finer hair that gets weighed down easily. Also because of its weight, it is the perfect base for using essential oils that further moisturize the scalp and fight off dandruff.

Stimulates hair growth

Massage almond oil directly on the scalp before clarifying or co-washing to stimulate hair growth. It contains strengthening magnesium at the root of hair, which increases blood circulation to the scalp to promote hair growth. Massage almond oil onto the scalp nights before you are ready to wash your hair the following day. Sleep with a satin bonnet so your pillow does not become oily. Do this consistently every time you wash for the best results.

Almond oil contains essential vitamins for skin health and beauty including vitamins A, E, and D. Its healthy fat content is important for keeping the skin supple and hydrated.

Exfoliates

Almond oil is an excellent carrier for salt and sugar. The salt or sugar will remove dirt and dead skin cells. The almond oil will immediately replenish your scrubbed skin. Apply this treatment to your face or lips once or twice a week for best results.

Almond oil facial cleanser removes dirt as effectively as the facial scrub. As a cleanser, it will open pores, forcing dead skin cells and dirt to come up to the surface. It also makes a gentle eye makeup remover as well.

Apply a generous amount of almond oil on dry skin, massage it in and then splash some water. Rinse your face with cool water and pat dry gently.

Evens out skin texture

The best time to use almond oil for facial massage is right before bedtime. It ensures that the oil will stay long enough so that it can perform its functions well. Almond oil massage helps to reduce dark circles under eyes, remove dead skin cells, and improves the texture of your facial skin. Applying almond oil before bed is that the solution is also therapeutic.

The most common benefit of almond oil for face is that it can be used as daily moisturizer. It not only softens up rough or dry skin, but almond oil also creates protective layer on the face.

Reduces fine lines

There are many products out there that claim to help with under eye dark circles. If you are looking for a more natural solution, almond oil is always a good choice. You can simply apply the oil in the dark areas before bed, so you can let it work while you are asleep. For optimum results, you need to perform this treatment everyday for several weeks. This treatment will not only help the under eye dark circles fade, but it also can help to reduce dark eyelids and crow’s feet.

How to: Wet your hands with warm water, and then massage the oil to all areas of your face. This will help the oil to penetrate more easily into the skin. You can even apply makeup after the oil is fully absorbed.

16 Things That Helped Me Grow Long & Healthy Hair

Often the issue isn’t the hair growth from the scalp that makes length difficult to achieve, but preventing breakage from the ends.

For years, I’ve been growing my hair out as healthy as it can be. This is how.

1. Practicing safe hair coloring

Many people might insist that coloring natural hair is damaging and you can’t grow it long because of that. While it is true that coloring causes some damage, you just have to make sure to care for the colored hair safely.

2. Trims (only when I need them”>

When your hair has a lot of split ends, trim it–but not just because of your calendar schedule. I go between three and four months for our trims. I know I’m due for a trim when my hair starts tangling more easily, sheds more and looks limp.

3. Regular deep conditioning

Genetically, my hair is super dry and I color it which makes it dryer as well. I deep condition every single time I wash my hair and use a regular conditioner as a leave-in. Using a deep conditioner with heat or steam will make it work even better; one of my personal favorites lately has been the Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Mask.

4. Using coconut oil

Coconut oil is one of the only oils that penetrates all the way to the middle of the hair strand. It helps provide strength, softness, and repairs damage to chemically treated hair. The night before wash day, I like to sleep with my hair saturated in coconut oil. Sometimes on day 2 or 3 hair, I will even use a little bit of coconut oil in place of a serum to minimize frizz.

6. Focusing on my scalp

While I sleep with coconut oil on my length, I use certain blends of essential oils on my scalp. I apply them before bedtime and then give myself a scalp massage, helping to increase circulation and blood flow to encourage growth. I like the Jessicurl Stimulating Scalp Oil Treatment.

7. Paying attention to ingredients

The more products I used that didn’t contain sulfates, non-water soluble silicones, parabens and heavy waxes, the better my hair health was overall. More natural products with moisturizers, healthy oils, butters and vitamins are so important. I especially notice when I don’t use products with heavy silicones my hair is less frizzy and better able to be managed.

8. Alternating between a shampoo & co-wash on wash days

I usually only wash my hair twice a week, alternating between sulfate-free shampoos and co-washes. I like to use Living Proof Restore one wash and then Nubian Heritage Strengthen & Grow the next time. Once a week, shampoo helps to remove styling products, sweat from working out, and environmental toxins. Every month, I use a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo to really help detox my hair (and keep my color from getting brassy”>.

9. Washing less

Washing your hair too frequently can dry the hair out because you are not allowing your hair to absorb the natural oils it produces. If you dry your hair out it becomes weak and prone to breakage. I use a dry shampoo and refresher spray on non wash days for the scalp to be clean.

10. Moisturizing often

Keeping the hair properly moisturized will help with breakage (which leads to length”>. The more dry your hair, the more moisture you need. I deep condition in the shower when my hair is wet and leave it in as long as possible. I’ll use a regular conditioner as a leave-in on days I don’t wash, and a refresher spray with a water-based leave-in to add moisture daily. It leaves my hair soft, hydrated and healthy.

11. Protecting my hair at night

Sleeping on satin pillowcases and spraying the hair with a moisture spray before bedtime are both great ways to let help your hair survive the night. Usually by morning, my hair–especially the ends–drink up my refresher spray as if it was a delicious milkshake!

12. Never over-processing with color

When I go in for my color, my hairdresser touches up my roots only. Not overlapping and putting color on previously colored hair keeps it so much more healthier than if the length of the hair were to get color processed every single time. Especially with long hair, the ends of my hair I think are at least 5 years old, so they have been through a lot.

13. Minimizing heat usage

I use heat styling tools as infrequently as possible. In the beginning of my journey, I went two years without straightening or blow drying it once. Now, I straighten once a year to see my length. I also air dry instead of blowdrying.

14. Detangling gently

A wide tooth comb or a Tangle Teezer is great to help tangle. Start from the bottom of the hair and work your way up the length to detangle. One big comb through from scalp to end will get the comb stuck in the hair and the results won’t be pretty. It might take a little extra time to detangle more carefully, but the reward of long healthy hair is worth it. Also, please don’t try and detangle hair that is all dry with styling products in it. That’s just a big no.

15. Watching my diet

Everything in our body, including our hair is affected by what we put into it. Eating a diet rich in protein, vegetables and whole grains is essential.

16. Taking hair vitamins

I have been taking hair vitamins every day for years. They are good for the hair and also for the body. I have gone through several brands and right now I am using the Hairfinity ones with good results. I suggest waiting at least 3 months before expecting to see results.

It’s all about consistency and patience!

Doing the scalp oils, the deep treatments and taking the hair vitamins consistently and in a routine will truly pay off. Remember, the average human hair grows about a half an inch a month. You might experience more or less but there is not one miracle way for hair to sprout inches overnight. If there was one, I’m pretty sure I would have found it already!

Happy hair growing!

The Coconut Oil Bleaching Method
Coconut oil is a natural chelating agent, reducing iron and copper production which happens when you use bleach/peroxide on your hair.
Coconut oil is an all natural beauty miracle for beauty and health. Applied topically or ingested, there are literally dozens of different benefits when using coconut oil. I have been sleeping with coconut oil in my hair as a pre poo treatment twice a week for over two years now and it has left my hair soft, shiny and more manageable.

Coconut oil can help with hair bleaching

Coconut oil leaves bleached hair feeling super soft and much more healthy looking. Using coconut oil on bleached hair can help hair that feels crunch or hay like feel significantly softer with consistent use and even make the hair more manageable.

How to use coconut oil for bleached hair

1. Coat all of your hair with melted coconut oil root to tip, at night before bed.

2. Cover it with a towel or shower cap and go to sleep.

3. Bleach hair as usual the next day with oil still in the hair.

Why it works

The idea is the night of oil-soaking replicates the buildup of natural oils in your hair and protects both your scalp and the hair itself from damage causing bleach. Some people have found that using oil helps their bleach to process faster than it would without it. Adding coconut oil to the bleaching process can create a barrier to help prevent the burning and itching feeling that usually occurs with the process.

DIY Lice Prevention Spray

Tea tree oil, also known scientifically as Melaleuca alternifolia, is an essential oil that has been extracted from a plant native to Australia and cannot be found naturally occurring elsewhere.

This oil is widely known for its topical antiseptic and antifungal treatment or infection-reducing benefits. Tea tree oil also has antibiotic properties aids against ailments like skin infections, rashes, burns, dandruff and much more.

As far as the hair is concerned, tea tree oil helps fight dry and itchy scalps and also can help combat dandruff thanks to the effective moisturizing properties within the oils. Though there is no scientific or clinical proof, I have read time and time again Tea Tree Oil also can help support hair growth. Thanks to its antiseptic and antifungal properties mentioned before, this oil creates the optimum condition on your scalp to grow hair. Being on a forever long personal journey to grow my hair long and healthy, I have counted tea tree as an ingredient in many, many hair growth stimulating oil mixes.

DIY Lice Prevention Spray

Although some studies have shown that tea tree oil is effective as a lice prevention treatment, there are not enough long-term studies to recommend it as a definitive prevention tool. That said, there are hundreds upon hundreds of anecdotal claims that it has been effective for families for years. If you are spraying a conditioning spray to detangle and keep your hair moisturized daily, you might as well add in some of this oil in for the potential benefits.

Directions

1. Using an eyedropper, drop 2-3 drops of pure tea tree oil (per ounce of liquid”> in a spray bottle full of water or a leave-in conditioner. 2. Shake well. 3. Spray on hair, rub in with your hands to distribute evenly, and style as usual.

You may also spray a little extra on your scalp and massage it in.

If you want to try and amp up the benefits, feel free to add 2 to 3 drops to your shampoo and conditioner. Do a patch test to make sure you are not allergic to tea tree oil if you have never used it before. If any reaction occurs, stop use immediately. Find tea tree oil at your local health store.

Always dilute it first

Because of how potent it is, it is always suggested to use tea tree oil diluted with another oil or conditioning mixture. Tea tree oil should never be ingested and is only to be used as a topical remedy.
6 Diet Hacks For Longer, Healthier Hair

You are what you eat–literally.

And because your hair is part of you, what you eat reflects in the health and state of your hair. If you want hair that is healthy, longer, stronger and shinier you should be paying attention to what you put INSIDE your body, not just what you use on the hair itself. These superfoods will help you and your hair looking their best.

1. Water = Hydration

We are primarily made up of water. It is important to stay hydrated and to keep all of your body cells working properly. By drinking enough water daily, you are also helping the hydration and moisture levels of your hair as well. By not drinking enough water daily, you are hindering your hair growth as well. If you don’t like the taste or want to spruce up your regular water, infuse it with some berries or citrus, which will give you added vitamins as well.

2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Iron, Vitamin D = Salmon

Salmon is a healthy food superstar; it is an oily fish rich in protein, vitamin D, and fatty acids. The Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for a healthy scalp, resulting in hair growth. Salmon also contains iron and Vitamin B12 which can help promote strength and shine in your hair. If you don’t like fish, flaxseeds are a good vegetarian replacement for these nutrients.

3. Biotin, Vitamin B, Protein= Chicken & Eggs

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? A diet with both contains good sources of protein that will really help your hair! Hair and nails are both composed of protein, which supports body and hair strength. Your hair is the last part of your body that gets the protein, so a lack of this in your diet could affect its state of hair fall and length retention. Eggs are full of B vitamins, especially biotin (B7″> and panthenol (B12″>. Yolks have important vitamins and minerals that the egg whites do not. Chicken is a rich source of protein, as well as several B vitamins that helps to strengthen fragile hair.

4. Zinc, Vitamin C = Beef & Oysters

Beef and oysters are rich sources of zinc, which is helpful in improving your hair’s natural luster. Zinc deficiency is a cause of hair loss and dryness, so include beef and oysters in your diet. Zinc is also said to help combat premature graying of hair. Make sure to eat enough vitamin C in your diet, which will help the zinc absorption. You can find vitamin C in citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits, as well.

4. Biotin, Vitamin E, Zinc = Nuts

Nuts are a great source of healthy fats, and we need healthy fats to look and feel our best. Walnuts and almonds in particular are high in omega-3 fatty acids which can help keep hair strong, and zinc which can help aid in hair loss. Walnuts in particular also contain a great amount of vitamin E and biotin. The vitamin E can help protect your cells from DNA damage cause by the environment and too little biotin can lead to hair loss. Brazil nuts are another great option to snack on for hair health. They contain a good amount of the mineral Selenium. A deficiency in Selenium has been linked to slower hair growth.

5. Folic acid, Iron, Biotin = Lentils

Lentils are a great vegetarian source of protein and are contain an excellent amount of folic acid. Folic acid is essential for hair growth and cell renewal and it is also necessary in restoring the health of red blood cells that supply skin and scalp with much-needed oxygen. Lentils also are a good source of iron, zinc and biotin too.

6. Vitamin A = Carrots & Sweet Potatoes

What do these two have in common? They’re both orange. They also are an excellent sources of Vitamin A. Vitamin A helps the scalp product enough sebum. Sebum is like natural oil that your scalp products and it important for your scalp and the length of your hair to stay moisturized and not become dry and brittle. Dandruff flaky scalp is just one condition of what might happen if your scalp does not produce enough sebum.

If Your "Trims" Always End in Tears, Try Asking for This Instead
NATURALLYCURLY READER EGYPTIANCHICK'S TRIM

How many times have you gone to the salon to ask for “just a trim” when all of a sudden half of your length is lopped off? Foregoing cutting your hair is not the answer to gaining length. Why? The split ends will accumulate and only get worse, traveling up the hair shaft and damaging more of our hair.

It is important to take care of your ends whenever you notice they are looking really frayed. There are 2 options: trimming and dusting. Each person is different.

There are 2 options: trimming and dusting.
Wavy or curly hair can usually go 3 or 4 months without a full trim and just minor dustings in between. It all depends on your hair type, length, and other factors. Here’s how to tell what your hair needs.

Trimming

In order to maintain healthy ends hair should be trimmed when necessary. There’s no use holding onto long hair with thinning, damaged ends. Cutting off the damage and retaining length will be far easier. There is a myth that says trimming hair often makes your hair grow faster. This notion is completely false. Hair is no longer living as soon as it emerges from the scalp, so trimming the ends makes no impact on growth. Maintaining healthy ends will help with retaining length. It will help with breakage, which is often the true culprit of your hair not growing. The key to trimming hair is knowing what needs to be trimmed and what doesn’t.

Dusting

This involves cutting under a 1/4 inch off of the ends of the hair to keep them in the best possible condition. Trimming often removes a larger amount of hair, so for those that are conscious of keeping their hair long dusting is a good alternative. Dusting is usually done every few weeks, often at home, which lessens the need for trims. When dusting look for thinning or uneven parts of the hair. Hairs are most protected and less likely to get damaged when they are around the same length as each other. Dusting also makes for better length retention, too.

Split end menders are just a temporary fix

All hair is susceptible to split ends regardless of whether you chemically process your hair or if it is natural. Split ends can’t be permanently repaired despite the claims from some specially formulated haircare products. These products can only temporarily glue split ends together so they appear repaired. Splits can occur at any point along the hair shaft but tend to occur at the end of the hair (hence the name”>. It is often advised that split ends should be cut as the split can travel up the hair shaft. Whilst this can happen, often splits tear or break off around the point they started. It’s best to just cut the split ends anyway as they can prevent full length retention.

When trimming, cutting or dusting hair, always ensure you use good quality scissors that are sharp. You don’t want to cause damage as you’re cutting it off. Make sure you are in good lighting to see exactly which parts of the hair are damaged. You may do this on either wet or dry hair.

Keep in mind that as curly girls, trimming hair while it’s wet may result in losing more length than you realize since curly hair does have shrinkage. It is important hair is cut straight across and not at an angle as this exposes more of the cortex layer of the hair which could lead to damage. If you’ve had hair layered using a razor blade or cutting at an angle you might find you have a few split ends, this is simply because the hair has not been cut evenly.

How to Dust Your Own Hair at Home

  1. Divide your hair into somewhat equal sections. Twist and clip the sections firmly on your head. If you have curly hair, consider putting your hair into several small two-strand twists to make dusting your hair easier to control and see.
  2. Use cutting shears specifically designed to cut hair. It’s worth the splurge to buy professional hair scissors when dusting or trimming your hair. Regular scissors actually aren’t sharp enough to cut through hair without causing damage and possibly split ends, so always opt for hair shears when dusting your hair.
  3. Unclip one of the sections. Try to go from the hair in your front bangs and work your way around.
  4. Examine each and every one of the ends. When you see a split end, then move on to to the next step.
  5. Trim no more than 1/4″ from the ends of your hair. Anything more is no longer dusting and considered a haircut! If you’re dusting your hair while it’s styled in two-strand twists, cut no more than 1/4″ from the end of each twist.
  6. Repeat all the steps until you have dusting all sections of your hair. This might take a while so plan ahead
