For curlies with especially dry or brittle hair that loses its moisture quickly, and particularly for those of us with tighter curl patterns, oil is a key player in maintaining healthy hair. It can be an essential part of your regimen as a sealant or mixed in with deep conditioner when your hair needs that extra bit of TLC. While sebum may have a tough time spreading out over coily and curly hair, using the right oil(s”> for your hair can help your curls to clump for definition, add shine, and most importantly capture that ever-elusive moisture!
One of the best oils that I’ve used on my type 4 hair since the start of my natural hair journey is actually an incredibly heavy, homemade oil blend featuring Wild Growth Hair Oil as the base. A fellow curly friend of mine introduced me to this mixture that she and her family have been using for years, which has yielded amazing results for all of them—and after trying it myself, I absolutely recommend it for kicking dryness to the curb this winter.

What is Wild Growth Oil?
You may not find it in every major store that carries curly hair products, but if you peruse the aisles of your local beauty supply store, you’ll more than likely come across Wild Growth Oil on the shelves. Considering it’s ingredients, it’s somewhat of a hidden gem of natural hair products. While I can’t attest to it “growing” my hair, it will definitely aid in length retention.
It features a list of plant-based ingredients and botanicals including: coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba, rice bran, cocoa butter, pomegranate, rose hip, and pumpkin seed oil. There are also a host of extracts and essential oils in the ingredients list like sesame seed and chickpea extracts, peppermint, lavender, frankincense, and others. If your scalp or skin is sensitive to essential oils, make sure you read the full list of ingredients on the back of the bottle!
The Special Oil Blend
To put together this heavy duty oil blend, you’ll need:
- Wild Growth Hair Oil
- Jamaican Black Castor Oil
- Avocado Oil
- Olive Oil
- Tea Tree Oil (for stimulating the scalp”>
Jamaican black castor oil is revered in the natural hair community for being moisturizing and nutrient rich, while avocado oil is stocked with fats that penetrate the hair shaft, and olive oil is full of antioxidants that promote strong hair and a healthy scalp.
Using the original Wild Growth Hair Oil bottle, add equal parts of the jbco, avocado oil, and olive oil to about half of the Wild Growth Hair Oil, and just 3-4 drops of tea tree oil. Shake the bottle well. You should end up with mostly Wild Growth Oil, blended with the other ingredients.
If you want to add/remove an ingredient, try it out. Experiment with different types of oils to suit your individual needs.
How to Use It in Your Routine
Although this mixture can most likely be used as a moisturizing oil due to the amount of moisturizing oils in it, I prefer to use oils as sealants in my daily routine and moisturize using a leave-in.
On damp hair, I apply my leave-in conditioner, styling pomade, and then the oil as usual, focusing on the ends first. For curlies who are prone to build-up I recommend using only a few drops of the oil daily, or even saving it for a hot oil treatment.
Smells and Build-Up
Because of the amount of different oils and extracts in this blend—yes, the smell is definitely strange. But it’s bearable! It smells a bit medicated and musky. If scent is a big deal-breaker for you, try adding a few drops of an oil that smells nice, like mango oil or jasmine.
When using a heavy sealant, it’s best to be on a regular wash routine. My main concern was keeping a clean scalp. On wash day, make sure to focus on your scalp to ensure that the pores are clear of buildup and that the new hair is able to grow.
What oils do you use for sealing and/or cocktailing? Do you use more than one? Let us know about your favorites in the comments.

For the last few weeks, I’ve been in pursuit of a new moisturizer that can handle my thirsty type 4 hair. And while yes, dryness is something I deal with on the regular, the cold, dry November air moving in on the east coast has made my coils a bit unpredictable lately.
Fortunately for me, my mother, a newly-transitioned natural, has been trying out a hoard of new products, and I’ve been sampling (sneaking”> them in hopes of stumbling upon some star products that I might have overlooked. While sifting through her moisturizer stash, I came across a gem: Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk.
Camille Rose Naturals is a beauty brand founded by mother, vegan, and former therapist Janell Stephens. Parenting children who suffer from sensitive skin, Janell was inspired to create her own skin and hair products with wholesome, organic ingredients which eventually became the brand the natural community adores today. While I’m familiar with the Camille Rose Naturals hair care line, I’ve never tried any of the products until now, but this leave-in is ultra hydrating and type 4 friendly.
Featured Organic Ingredients
Like every good leave-in, this one brings out the heavy-hitters for maximum moisture. The Moisture Milk is water-based with a blend of top quality natural oils and ingredients, including avocado seed oil, castor seed oil, macadamia nut oil, green tea leaf, rice milk, and others. Castor oil, avocado oil, and macadamia nut oil are all antioxidant-rich oils that promote moisture and encourage definition. Rice milk is thought to promote hair growth and contains a great slip for detangling.
First Impressions
Immediately after squeezing the product out of the bottle and noticing the lotion-like consistency, the next thing I was aware of was the sweet cupcake smell—which, surprisingly, I thoroughly enjoyed! What’s even better is that it’s not sickly or overpowering when it’s been applied to your hair. Although the scent is light, naturals who don’t appreciate fragrances or who use many different products in their routine may not approve.
Always a skeptic of light consistency products, initially I was unsure if the product would be able to coat my strands enough to moisturize my hair, but not only does the Moisture Milk hydrate, it defines curls/coils and makes for easier detangling. A true all-around moisturizer if I’ve ever seen one (and I’ve seen many“>.
My Routine With The Moisture Milk
My daily routine consists of a leave-in, oil, and pomade using the LOC method. Swapping my previous leave-in for the Moisture Milk, I separate my hair into four even sections, spray my hair with water until it’s consistently damp throughout, and add about a dime-sized amount for each section, starting from the ends to the roots.
I follow up the leave-in with Jamaican black castor oil, and then finally Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey Pomade, detangling as-needed with a vented detangling brush. Afterwards, I style as usual. For twist-outs, I moisturize small sections of hair the same way, and then twist. When combining products, be sure to take your hair density and porosity into account—you may want to combine the Moisture Milk with lighter products.
Final Thoughts
I would recommend this leave-in to curly and coily hair types looking to amp up their moisturizing routine this winter. It’s perfect for daily moisturizing and definition, and blends well with other products due to its light consistency. The only slight gripe I have is that the 8 ounce bottle doesn’t seem to last long when used for daily moisturizing.
Other than that, it’s well worth your time and money. Grab Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk at the SHOP for $15.

Those of us naturals with dandruff and dry scalp (which are actually two different conditions”> know that dealing with those bothersome flakes can range from being a slight inconvenience, to a serious confidence buster. And although most people are embarrassed by their flaky scalps, it’s actually very common. There are endless treatments that you can find at your local drugstore, but knowing what to look for in treatment may prove to be a little more challenging than just reaching for the Head & Shoulders shampoo.
“Dry scalp occurs when the scalp’s normal pH is out of balance and causes the scalp to feel tight, irritated and peel,” says Sophia Emmanuel, trichologist and stylist at Crown Worthy Inc. in New York City. “It looks similar to other parts of your body that get dry from lack of moisture. The main difference between dandruff and dry scalp is that dry scalp is not always accompanied by flakes. Dandruff is when the dead skin cells flake off of the epidermis (the top layer of the skin”> faster than normal, causing flakes to fall on your T-shirt, or stick to your scalp and hair. Itching may also occur.”
It’s true that dandruff and dry scalp can look similar, but each condition has different underlying causes. Dry scalp is often caused by environmental factors like cold or dry weather and irritating ingredients, while dandruff can be caused by stress, hormonal changes, a poor diet, and an overproduction of a special yeast called Malassezia.
When choosing the proper products to treat your scalp, Sophia encourages dandruff and dry scalp sufferers to know their scalp and what irritates it. “Pay attention to what products trigger your scalp dryness so you can stop using them. Many people tend to want to use tea tree or peppermint oil to soothe dry scalp because of their cooling properties. Although they help the scalp feel soothed, high doses used too often can make the scalp burn and feel drier and more irritated.” For dry scalp treatment, she recommends using pre-shampoo products and scalp toners. She uses Influence It’s a Natural Stimulating Spray as a pre-poo and Philip Kingsley’s Flaky Scalp Toner and Soothing Scalp Mask on her clients.
When treating dandruff, Sophia points out that creamy products may help, and similarly to dry scalp treatment, pre-poos are a must. “Pre-shampoos that have antibacterial or antiseptic properties are best, because they help control the bacteria that encourage flakes. Use products with a creamy consistency that helps lift and soften dandruff, making flakes easy to remove with shampoo.” On her clients, she uses Rene Furterer’s Complexe 5 Stimulating Plant Extract, Decca Satin Scalp Therapy, and Phillip Kingsley’s Flaky Itchy Mask. When it comes to looking for an effective pre-poo for dandruff, keep an eye out for these powerhouse ingredients: lavender, chamomile, aloe vera, peppermint, coal tar, salicylic acid, zinc, and selenium sulfide.
As important as it is to what products to use, it’s just as important to know what practices we should avoid or embrace. “Avoid scratching the scalp with combs or finger nails because this can cause hair loss, or inflammation of the scalp,” Sophia says. And when choosing what oil to use, avoid applying heavy oils like castor directly to your scalp. “Heavy oils like these clog pores and encourage more dandruff by trapping dirt on the scalp.” If you do happen to experience buildup, make sure your scalp is being thoroughly cleansed with shampoo on a regular basis—even (and especially”> when you’re rocking your protective styles.

Similarly to how our hair texture and porosity can define the way we go about caring for our hair, both hair density and strand thickness also play a leading role in styling and healthy hair care. If you’ve ever painstakingly followed a YouTube natural/curly hair tutorial to a tee using the same products, styling tools, and technique as portrayed in the video only to be left with an odd not-quite-there version of the original style—you may have hair density and thickness to thank.
While we all enjoy looking at thick, bouncy curls, the reality is that some people, if not most of us, were not blessed with that over the top, bombshell density naturally. Moreover, plenty of naturals deal with various degrees of hair loss that can really put a damper on styling. Is your hair looking limp from products? Greasy? Weighed-down and tired? We feel that.
In the spirit of Hair Loss Awareness Month, we’ve assembled a list of volume-inducing shampoos, conditioners, detanglers, and stylers that will leave limp hair looking fuller and more lively—without packing on oils that weigh it down. Scroll through these 10 potential holy grails, priced at $20 and under, that are worth every penny.

Fact: The average person loses about 50-100 hairs every day. Although we all occasionally check the size of our detangled hairball or the amount of hair in our comb, most visibly healthy people don’t suspect that their hair may be shedding excessively or even thinning. For most people, hair loss is not something we expect to confront until our later years, if ever.
Truthfully, hair loss is something that can happen to anyone, regardless of age or even sex— it’s possible for both men and women to experience hair thinning at any age. In fact, women make up about 40 percent of hair loss sufferers in the United States according to the American Hair Loss Association. George Constanza, eat your heart out. So once you’ve concluded that you might be losing more than the usual amount of strands, the most pressing question is what can be done to reverse it?
Certified IAT trichologist and stylist Sophia Emmanuel gave us the facts on different types of hair loss, what action to take when your hair is thinning, and why some of the most popular remedies may not be the best choice.
Types of Hair Loss: Telogen Effluvium, Androgenetic Alopecia, & Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia
Before we delve into the remedies, it’s important to get a better understanding of some common types of hair loss.
The hair growth process requires a consistent balance of vitamins and minerals and when there is an imbalance, diffuse hair loss in no particular pattern or telogen effluvium can occur.
“It causes more hairs from the anagen, hair growth stage, to enter the telogen, hair shedding stage, hence the reason there is excessive hair fall,” Sophia says. This can be triggered by hormonal imbalances, zinc deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, a high fever, childbirth, psychological stress, and other conditions.
Androgenetic Alopecia is the scientific name for what we know as female or male pattern baldness. This type of hair loss is affected by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone or DHT.
According to Sophia, “Dihydrotestosterone causes hair strands at the top and front of the head to miniaturize. This means that your thick hair strands, turn into thin peach fuzz strands and you may notice a wider part and see more scalp.”
Lastly, Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia is the type of hair loss that Sophia sees the most often. It’s is a permanent type of hair loss that damages the follicles and is common in women of African and Caribbean descent. It’s mostly triggered by relaxers, genetics, tension from hairstyles, and infrequent shampooing.
Hair Supplements and Vitamins
Popping hair growth vitamins may seem like a logical step to take when experiencing hair loss, but you should keep in mind that they are not clinically proven to treat any disease or condition—you have to address the underlying cause first.
“You can use supplements as part of your regimen to keep your hair growing healthy, not to increase hair growth,” Sophia says. “It is important to get the nutrients you need for healthy hair from the foods you eat. Because lifestyle may get in the way of eating healthy, hair supplements can be used as a back up to make sure you are getting the nutrients you need for your body and hair health.”
Biotin supplements, for example, do not regrow hair. According to Sophia, “The only time you need to take biotin supplements is if your body does not allow you to absorb it from the foods you eat. Taking high doses of biotin can also cause incorrect blood test results if you are experiencing hair loss or a health issue.”
While supplements may not be the miracle fix for hair regrowth, Sophia mentions that they can be used for thickening the hair strands of a person with Androgenetic Alopecia. Hair supplements containing ingredients such as saw palmetto, safflower, and green tea extract may aid in obstructing DHT.
Bottom line: Supplements can be beneficial to maintain healthy hair, but do not regrow lost hair. You should consult a professional (dermatologist, a trichologist, primary care doctor”> before reaching for any supplements.
Natural Remedies
Similarly to when dealing with supplements, the first step is always to consult with a professional. Understanding your condition and its causes will save you a lot of time and money when considering treatment options—and you’ll avoid causing further damage to your scalp.
Sophia believes the safest natural remedies are the essential oils—as long as they’re being diluted with a carrier oil. She recommends seeing an aromatherapist to use them safely.
“I do not think essential oils by themselves will solve your hair loss problems, but depending on the type of hair loss you have and the individual, they can be used to stabilize hair loss in combination with other therapies. For example, low-level laser therapy, and supplements.”
Bottom line: Essential oils alone will most likely not treat hair loss, but they may be used in tandem with another treatment option. As always—consult a professional before using essential oils to treat hair loss.
Does Massaging the Scalp Stimulate Hair Regrowth?
There’s nothing like the feeling of a scalp massage after a long day. We know massaging can stimulate the scalp but does it aid in regrowing hair?
The answer is: not directly, but it can alleviate some symptoms associated with inflammation and dry scalp, and inflammation can cause hair loss.
“Inflammation can cause hair loss, so minimizing it is important. Essential oils can play a role in minimizing inflammation such as lavender oil.
If your scalp feels tight or itchy, a gentle massage can help soothe those symptoms.” Sophia recommends jojoba oil with 2 to 3 drops of lavender oil to help calm the scalp.
“Extra stress or anxiety can enhance hair loss, so finding a way to manage stress can help affect your mood in a positive way and help keep more hair on your head.”
Bottom line: Scalp massages do not directly regrow hair, but they can calm inflammation, which can cause hair loss. It’s also a great de-stressor.
For Naturals Experiencing Hair Loss For The First Time
For those who have never experienced hair loss before, Sophia gives 4 tips:
- “Stay away from heavy sticky oils like castor oil which can be very clogging on the scalp and cause bacteria and dirt to be trapped on the scalp causing itching, which can lead to hair loss. When your scalp is clogged your hair can not grow healthy.”
- “Stay away from styles that add tension on the scalp, and shampoo once a week to keep the scalp clean.”
- “If you are experiencing hair loss, reduce chemical use because they cause inflammation on the scalp, which encourages hair loss.”
- “Do not wait too long to address the problem if you know you are experiencing hair loss. The longer you wait, the less chance you have of saving your hair.”
For Overall Healthy Hair and Scalp
To keep your hair and scalp looking its best and encourage healthy hair growth, Sophia recommends that you:
- “Take breaks in between protective styles to let your scalp breathe and have access to your hair to shampoo and condition it properly.”
- “Keep your hair care regime simple, you do not need to use a lot of products to take care of your hair. Less is more.”
- “Treat your scalp like your face, and remember that it is skin, and needs to be cleansed with shampoo to properly remove buildup and dirt so your hair can grow healthy.”

One of the greatest parts of having naturally curly or coily hair is the ability to drastically change the state of your hair in a short amount of time. It can take on many different forms, including shrinking up to less than half of its length when wet or damp—a less than popular aspect of curly hair care.
In reality, it’s usually a sign of moisturized healthy hair, yet we spend countless hours trying to battle it, tame it, and stretch it out to achieve longer curls and coils. Granted, as a type 4 natural myself, I know there are benefits to consistently wearing stretched styles, one of the most important being protection from breakage. For some curlies, retaining length is dependent on stretching their hair. And in addition to length retention, there’s nothing more satisfying than a perfectly executed twist out.
But if you’re panicking over shrinkage from excessive humidity (the devil”> or one “failed” stretched style—stop stressing. Your hair can still look stunning, even if your bra strap-length hair is pretending to be a TWA. Shrinkage is just one of the many characteristics of curly hair that contribute to it’s never-ending charm. If you’re feeling discouraged (or you just want to appreciate some natural hair”>, see the shrunken curly hair inspo ahead.

As July really sets in, many of us naturals have already geared up for all of the changes that need to be made to our routines. We’ve got our protective styles in, sun-block products at the ready, and every gel imaginable in our arsenal to keep frizz in check. We’ve prepared our hair to face the relentless humidity and heat, while feasibly neglecting a key component to keeping it looking it’s best—our scalp. Between consistent protective styling, daily moisturizing, edge control residue, and combined product/sweat buildup (gross, but true”>, be aware that your scalp might need a little extra TLC this season.
I’ll admit, adding more steps to an already time-consuming wash day is tedious, but also very necessary in maintaining a healthy environment for curls and coils. Akin to the relationship between soil and plants, hair can only be as healthy as the scalp it grows from. When the buildup is strong, products with exfoliating and antimicrobial properties work overtime to get rid of dead skin cells and prevent the growth of microorganisms—an all-star clean-up crew!
Luckily we’re here to help you navigate through all of the options and narrow down which products you should add to your stash. If you’ve been slacking on scalp-care, it might be time to rotate some of these gems into your routine.

If you’ve been keeping up with the latest buzz in the curly hair world, you may have recently witnessed a Twitter convo about private spaces for Black women and their natural and curly hair— a conversation sparked by Serena Williams’s husband and Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian.
Last month, Alexis tweeted about applying to join several natural hair Facebook groups in order to educate himself on taking care of his young daughter, Alexis Olympia’s, naturally curly hair. There’s a lot to keep track of when you’re preparing for a trip— packing clothes, electronics, booking a hotel or home away, maybe a plane ticket and a passport. When you’re going through all that planning, the last thing you’ll want to stress about is maintaining your gorgeous hair, as that can be time consuming on its own.
Luckily, with the right tools and accessories, you’ll have plenty of time to spend with your family, immersing yourself in a new culture, or sipping that mimosa on the beach without giving your hair too much thought.
Whether you’re setting out on your next international adventure or planning a short road trip, you’ll want to consider investing in these 15 life (and time”> saving tools to keep your curls looking their best, even when you’re away from home.
1. Detangling Brush
Very few people are thrilled about detangling their hair. There can be a lot of pulling, tugging, arm cramps and fairy knots— not my kind of party. And when you’re traveling, this can be especially tedious. Cue Felicia Leatherwood’s Detangler Brush. With widely-spaced, flexible bristles that prevent hair pulling while aiding in removing shed hair, detangling will be much easier at home and away.

The water rolls off of the Shhhowercap, and when it does get wet, it dries immediately.

It also comes in mini sizes.
