For the last few weeks, I’ve been in pursuit of a new moisturizer that can handle my thirsty type 4 hair. And while yes, dryness is something I deal with on the regular, the cold, dry November air moving in on the east coast has made my coils a bit unpredictable lately.
Fortunately for me, my mother, a newly-transitioned natural, has been trying out a hoard of new products, and I’ve been sampling (sneaking”> them in hopes of stumbling upon some star products that I might have overlooked. While sifting through her moisturizer stash, I came across a gem: Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk.
Camille Rose Naturals is a beauty brand founded by mother, vegan, and former therapist Janell Stephens. Parenting children who suffer from sensitive skin, Janell was inspired to create her own skin and hair products with wholesome, organic ingredients which eventually became the brand the natural community adores today. While I’m familiar with the Camille Rose Naturals hair care line, I’ve never tried any of the products until now, but this leave-in is ultra hydrating and type 4 friendly.
Featured Organic Ingredients
Like every good leave-in, this one brings out the heavy-hitters for maximum moisture. The Moisture Milk is water-based with a blend of top quality natural oils and ingredients, including avocado seed oil, castor seed oil, macadamia nut oil, green tea leaf, rice milk, and others. Castor oil, avocado oil, and macadamia nut oil are all antioxidant-rich oils that promote moisture and encourage definition. Rice milk is thought to promote hair growth and contains a great slip for detangling.
First Impressions
Immediately after squeezing the product out of the bottle and noticing the lotion-like consistency, the next thing I was aware of was the sweet cupcake smell—which, surprisingly, I thoroughly enjoyed! What’s even better is that it’s not sickly or overpowering when it’s been applied to your hair. Although the scent is light, naturals who don’t appreciate fragrances or who use many different products in their routine may not approve.
Always a skeptic of light consistency products, initially I was unsure if the product would be able to coat my strands enough to moisturize my hair, but not only does the Moisture Milk hydrate, it defines curls/coils and makes for easier detangling. A true all-around moisturizer if I’ve ever seen one (and I’ve seen many“>.
My Routine With The Moisture Milk
My daily routine consists of a leave-in, oil, and pomade using the LOC method. Swapping my previous leave-in for the Moisture Milk, I separate my hair into four even sections, spray my hair with water until it’s consistently damp throughout, and add about a dime-sized amount for each section, starting from the ends to the roots.
I follow up the leave-in with Jamaican black castor oil, and then finally Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey Pomade, detangling as-needed with a vented detangling brush. Afterwards, I style as usual. For twist-outs, I moisturize small sections of hair the same way, and then twist. When combining products, be sure to take your hair density and porosity into account—you may want to combine the Moisture Milk with lighter products.
Final Thoughts
I would recommend this leave-in to curly and coily hair types looking to amp up their moisturizing routine this winter. It’s perfect for daily moisturizing and definition, and blends well with other products due to its light consistency. The only slight gripe I have is that the 8 ounce bottle doesn’t seem to last long when used for daily moisturizing.
Other than that, it’s well worth your time and money. Grab Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk at the SHOP for $15.

Those of us naturals with dandruff and dry scalp (which are actually two different conditions”> know that dealing with those bothersome flakes can range from being a slight inconvenience, to a serious confidence buster. And although most people are embarrassed by their flaky scalps, it’s actually very common. There are endless treatments that you can find at your local drugstore, but knowing what to look for in treatment may prove to be a little more challenging than just reaching for the Head & Shoulders shampoo.
“Dry scalp occurs when the scalp’s normal pH is out of balance and causes the scalp to feel tight, irritated and peel,” says Sophia Emmanuel, trichologist and stylist at Crown Worthy Inc. in New York City. “It looks similar to other parts of your body that get dry from lack of moisture. The main difference between dandruff and dry scalp is that dry scalp is not always accompanied by flakes. Dandruff is when the dead skin cells flake off of the epidermis (the top layer of the skin”> faster than normal, causing flakes to fall on your T-shirt, or stick to your scalp and hair. Itching may also occur.”
It’s true that dandruff and dry scalp can look similar, but each condition has different underlying causes. Dry scalp is often caused by environmental factors like cold or dry weather and irritating ingredients, while dandruff can be caused by stress, hormonal changes, a poor diet, and an overproduction of a special yeast called Malassezia.
When choosing the proper products to treat your scalp, Sophia encourages dandruff and dry scalp sufferers to know their scalp and what irritates it. “Pay attention to what products trigger your scalp dryness so you can stop using them. Many people tend to want to use tea tree or peppermint oil to soothe dry scalp because of their cooling properties. Although they help the scalp feel soothed, high doses used too often can make the scalp burn and feel drier and more irritated.” For dry scalp treatment, she recommends using pre-shampoo products and scalp toners. She uses Influence It’s a Natural Stimulating Spray as a pre-poo and Philip Kingsley’s Flaky Scalp Toner and Soothing Scalp Mask on her clients.
When treating dandruff, Sophia points out that creamy products may help, and similarly to dry scalp treatment, pre-poos are a must. “Pre-shampoos that have antibacterial or antiseptic properties are best, because they help control the bacteria that encourage flakes. Use products with a creamy consistency that helps lift and soften dandruff, making flakes easy to remove with shampoo.” On her clients, she uses Rene Furterer’s Complexe 5 Stimulating Plant Extract, Decca Satin Scalp Therapy, and Phillip Kingsley’s Flaky Itchy Mask. When it comes to looking for an effective pre-poo for dandruff, keep an eye out for these powerhouse ingredients: lavender, chamomile, aloe vera, peppermint, coal tar, salicylic acid, zinc, and selenium sulfide.
As important as it is to what products to use, it’s just as important to know what practices we should avoid or embrace. “Avoid scratching the scalp with combs or finger nails because this can cause hair loss, or inflammation of the scalp,” Sophia says. And when choosing what oil to use, avoid applying heavy oils like castor directly to your scalp. “Heavy oils like these clog pores and encourage more dandruff by trapping dirt on the scalp.” If you do happen to experience buildup, make sure your scalp is being thoroughly cleansed with shampoo on a regular basis—even (and especially”> when you’re rocking your protective styles.

Similarly to how our hair texture and porosity can define the way we go about caring for our hair, both hair density and strand thickness also play a leading role in styling and healthy hair care. If you’ve ever painstakingly followed a YouTube natural/curly hair tutorial to a tee using the same products, styling tools, and technique as portrayed in the video only to be left with an odd not-quite-there version of the original style—you may have hair density and thickness to thank.
While we all enjoy looking at thick, bouncy curls, the reality is that some people, if not most of us, were not blessed with that over the top, bombshell density naturally. Moreover, plenty of naturals deal with various degrees of hair loss that can really put a damper on styling. Is your hair looking limp from products? Greasy? Weighed-down and tired? We feel that.
In the spirit of Hair Loss Awareness Month, we’ve assembled a list of volume-inducing shampoos, conditioners, detanglers, and stylers that will leave limp hair looking fuller and more lively—without packing on oils that weigh it down. Scroll through these 10 potential holy grails, priced at $20 and under, that are worth every penny.

One of the greatest parts of having naturally curly or coily hair is the ability to drastically change the state of your hair in a short amount of time. It can take on many different forms, including shrinking up to less than half of its length when wet or damp—a less than popular aspect of curly hair care.
In reality, it’s usually a sign of moisturized healthy hair, yet we spend countless hours trying to battle it, tame it, and stretch it out to achieve longer curls and coils. Granted, as a type 4 natural myself, I know there are benefits to consistently wearing stretched styles, one of the most important being protection from breakage. For some curlies, retaining length is dependent on stretching their hair. And in addition to length retention, there’s nothing more satisfying than a perfectly executed twist out.
But if you’re panicking over shrinkage from excessive humidity (the devil”> or one “failed” stretched style—stop stressing. Your hair can still look stunning, even if your bra strap-length hair is pretending to be a TWA. Shrinkage is just one of the many characteristics of curly hair that contribute to it’s never-ending charm. If you’re feeling discouraged (or you just want to appreciate some natural hair”>, see the shrunken curly hair inspo ahead.

As curlies and naturals I think we all fantasize about having a perfect salon experience. An experience where you can get your hair twisted, cut, or braided to perfection, the stylist is knowledgeable about natural hair (no matter the texture”>, and our curls and coils thank us in the end. Cue slow motion editing and the Chariots of Fire theme song.
Of course, that scenario, for many of us, is often far from reality. Even the most upscale salons are not yet equipped to deal with curly or kinky textures, especially considering each hair type requires a very different type of care. So (if you’re like me”> we abandon salon visits and hope for the best with our own skills, rather than chance a(nother”> botched hair appointment.

As July really sets in, many of us naturals have already geared up for all of the changes that need to be made to our routines. We’ve got our protective styles in, sun-block products at the ready, and every gel imaginable in our arsenal to keep frizz in check. We’ve prepared our hair to face the relentless humidity and heat, while feasibly neglecting a key component to keeping it looking it’s best—our scalp. Between consistent protective styling, daily moisturizing, edge control residue, and combined product/sweat buildup (gross, but true”>, be aware that your scalp might need a little extra TLC this season.

Academy Award-winning actress and multifaceted queen, Lupita Nyong’o, is set to release a children’s book this fall entitled Sulwe. After showcasing the beautifully illustrated cover via Instagram earlier this month, the internet has been ablaze with discussion and excitement over the highly anticipated picture book.
While the target audience will be children ages 5 to 7, the Us star’s inaugural book will attempt to take on a very sinister and complex topic: colorism. The major details of the plot are still underwraps, but we know that Sulwe, the titular main character, is a young child who struggles with her self-image of her dark skin, and the name “Sulwe” is the word for “star” in the Kenyan language Luo. After going on a mystical adventure, Sulwe “awakens with a reimagined sense of beauty,” encountering “lessons that we learn as children and spend our lives unlearning,” she wrote on Instagram.
Here is the plot, as described by Simon and Schuster: “Sulwe has skin the color of midnight. She is darker than everyone in her family. She is darker than anyone in her school. Sulwe just wants to be beautiful and bright, like her mother and sister. Then a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes everything.”
This would not be the first time the actress has made a public statement regarding the everyday plight of women and girls with darker skin.
“As I have made clear so often in the past with every fiber of my being, I embrace my natural heritage and despite having grown up thinking light skin and straight, silky hair were the standards of beauty, I now know that my dark skin and kinky, coily hair are beautiful too.”Lupita, now a fashion and beauty icon, has been very outspoken about the need for discussion on colorism throughout her career, citing this struggle in her triumphant and emotional speech at Essence Magazine’s annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon in 2014. In this speech, she referenced a letter she received from a young Black girl who said that by witnessing Lupita’s success on-screen and in Hollywood, she saved her from buying skin bleaching cream. Lupita, having gone through a similar struggle, detailed her own personal journey to self-acceptance and self-love, and the importance of representation in a world that does not often place value in having dark skin. If you’ve never heard this speech, it’s something everyone needs to hear, go check it out. Later that same year, in an interview with Glamour, she described her childhood in Kenya, saying:
“This is the message: that dark skin is unacceptable. I definitely wasn’t hearing this from my immediate family– my mother never said anything to that effect– but the voices from the television are usually much louder than the voices of your parents.”
Lupita told The New York Times in 2018 that although she was grateful for the overwhelming response, it was clear that “the age group that really needed to hear this wouldn’t necessarily hear the speech.” By acknowledging that the groundwork for a child’s self-esteem is solidified at an early age, Lupita has set the stage for Sulwe to be a lesson on self-love and an opportunity to build a strong, positive self-image for a new generation of children with dark skin. And it’s a perfect segue into a difficult, but necessary discussion between parents and their kids.
Image: @lupitanyongo
In her Instagram caption she writes,“I wrote Sulwe to encourage children (and everyone really!”> to love the skin they are in and see the beauty that radiates within.”
Sulwe, illustrated by Vashti Harrison and published by Simon and Schuster, is expected to release on October 1, but it’s available for pre-order now!
What do you think, will you be reading this with your young ones? Or are you (like me!”> an adult who’s interested in reading the book? Go ahead and get the discussion going in the comments.

Mielle Organics, a hair care and beauty brand that places an emphasis on using all natural and organic ingredients, has been gaining a huge amount of traction in the natural hair community. So it’s no surprise that one of its products landed a NaturallyCurly Best of the Best – Leaders in Curl Award. If you haven’t heard, the NaturallyCurly team members and community voted to determine the best hair products of every category and for all hair types for 2019. Check it out if you haven’t already.
The product fresh out of the box.
The Mielle Organics Avocado Moisturizing Hair Milk won the award in the “Moisturizer” product category for all hair types, including coily hair. It’s advertised as a hydrating product for dry, thirsty, hair and based on the rave reviews I knew I had to see what the hype was about. Plus, like all Mielle Organics products, it’s free of any harmful chemicals or preservatives while boasting a full list of organic ingredients and botanicals. This list includes aloe vera, avocado oil, and jojoba seed oil, all of which are great hydrators and strengthen the hair.
My ultimate goal was a twist-out, so my only requirements for this moisturizer was that it aided in the detangling process and that it left my hair feeling soft for a bouncy, voluminous style.
The Process and First Impressions:
The entire process was pretty simple. I started out on damp hair, twisting small sections of hair and applying the hair milk evenly while detangling, making sure to coat the strands. Next I followed up with Murray’s Australian Beeswax and Jamaican black castor oil to seal the ends.
While applying the product I immediately noticed two things. The first was that, despite it being a thin-feeling product (compared to my usual butters and creams”>, it provided a lot of “slip” and made it easier for me to remove tangles and run my fingers through my hair. The next thing I noticed was the definition! Because I tend to stick to stretched styles I don’t usually worry about flawless definition–but my curls and coils were more defined than I’ve seen in a while. It also has a very light and pleasant scent, nothing overpowering.
To be honest, I usually steer clear any type of hair “milk” or “spray,” as a type 4 natural. Any product that sounds like it will be light usually means it will just sit on top of my hair rather than actually penetrate the hair strands. But I was pleasantly surprised by this and more than a little shook– just this product alone was enough to moisturize my hair. I usually go in with maybe two or three moisturizing products in my routine, and this time I used this product alone.
Results and Final Thoughts:
After six years of being natural, I may have just found a new holy grail product. Mielle Organics’ Avocado Moisturizing Hair Milk stays true to its’ promise to provide hydration and moisture to dry hair and is easily one of the best all-around products that I have tried so far this year. This Best of the Best Award is well-deserved. My only complaint is that I wish I had more of it.

With Women’s History Month well underway, one of the best ways you can celebrate women and their magical existence is to support their businesses. Does the thought of all natural, avocado-based products for curly and kinky hair sound like heaven to you? If so, Muhga Eltigani, the CEO and founder of NaturAll Club has created the products you’ve been waiting for. Starting in her college dorm room, Muhga began to make her own products out of her disappointment with the natural products on the market at the time.
Today, she’s pioneered a company that has taken the community by storm by commercially producing non-toxic, natural products, some of which contain real fruit. I recently purchased the NaturAll Club Ultimate Wash Day Bundle for Dry Hair, and thoroughly enjoyed my wash day without stripped hair and knots. The bundle included the Cleansing Avocado Shampoo, the Hydrating Avocado Conditioner, and the Avocado Deep Conditioner in one package.
The package was well put together, with a little card introducing Muhga and the company.
The Shampoo?
I live for a shampoo that doesn’t strip. The Cleansing Avocado Shampoo did a good job of removing the bit of buildup that I had without stripping my hair (which I’m always concerned about because my hair has issues with dryness anyway”>. I sectioned my hair into about eight twists and used about a quarter-sized amount of the shampoo, working it primarily onto my scalp and letting it run down my hair. It also had a really refreshing “natural” smell of an essential oil mixture.
Instead of sulfates, this cleanser boasts a gentler list of ingredients to clean including Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, derived from coconuts.
The Conditioner?
The Hydrating Avocado Conditioner, which has a similar fresh smell to the shampoo, has good slip and made detangling easier. It has a lotion-like consistency that goes on smoothly and made it possible for me to run my fingers through my hair.
In my wash-day routine, I typically use conditioner first to keep my hair as moisturized as possible. So I actually used this product before the shampoo by sectioning off my hair and applied the conditioner to detangle, then rinsed the product out with the shampoo.
This conditioner contains natural ingredients such as avocado oil, coconut oil, shea butter, and mango seed butter.
The Deep Conditioner?
If I’m being real, this was the pièce de résistance of the bundle, in my mind. I wasn’t sure how my hair was going to respond to it since the deep conditioners I’m used to are very thick and heavy, while this was rather light in comparison. But after letting it sit for about 25-30 minutes and rinsing, my hair came out feeling extremely soft and moisturized. I think the avocado in the product made a huge difference in how soft my hair was afterwards. Again, I applied the product to my hair in sections and rinsed it thoroughly while in the sections. I used one whole pack.
This deep conditioner is the real deal natural and is made with real fruit, so it’s advised that you keep it in the freezer or the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it. I kept mine in the freezer for a day and thawed it for about two hours. It has ingredients like avocados, shea butter, olive oil, and honey.
Bottom line?
The results on stretched after using the products.
Do I recommend this wash day bundle? Definitely. All of the products worked well for my hair and left it feeling moisturized, healthy, and smelling like a garden with essential oils. If you’re looking for some new products, give it a try, especially if you struggle with dryness.

Having healthy and strong natural hair is the ultimate goal for most naturals, but there is no shame in switching it up every now and again! If you’re a natural who still likes to wear straight styles, then blowouts may be a styling choice that is near and dear to your heart. But is there a way to maintain the style on curly and coily hair, especially for those of us who live an active lifestyle and exercise regularly? Sophia Emmanuel, professional stylist and certified trichologist of Mane Advocates in New York, took the time to impart her knowledge on getting the most out of your blowout on naturally curly and coily hair, and what you should expect from your hair.

So, why a blowout? What are your thoughts on the benefits of getting a blowout on natural hair?
“When it comes to blow drying natural hair it depends on what works best for your lifestyle, (for example exercise, or other athletic activities”> and the amount of time you want to spend maintaining your hair. For women with natural hair, blow drying their hair is just easier for them to maintain, especially if they are not as hands on with cleansing, conditioning or styling their own hair at home. Although a blowout on natural hair is easy to maintain, it can be harder to keep it from reverting back to the natural texture if you work out or if your hair is exposed to any moisture.”
What is your blowout technique for natural hair? Is there any difference between doing the style on straight hair and curly/coily hair?
“In the salon I shampoo, condition the hair under a steamer, rinse the conditioner, add a leave-in like It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In, place the client under the dryer to let at least 80% of the water dry out the hair. After this, the client is removed from the dryer and I add a heat protectant spray like Brazilian Blowout Ionic Blow dry spray, before I blow dry the hair. Once the hair is blown out, I add a pea sized amount of Brazilian Blowout Dry Oil and I proceed to flat iron the hair. This technique is used on type 3c to 4c. Looser curl types could use just a blow dryer to straighten their hair, using the same products, because (they are not heavy, and will not weigh the hair down.”> For a sleeker look, looser textures can use a flat iron as well. On straighter hair I use the same process, it just takes a shorter time.”
Do you have any favorite products to help maintain the style?
“At home there are really no products you need to use to maintain a blow dry. If you use products on your hair when it is blown out, like serums or oils, they may weigh the hair down. Once the hair is straightened you can use a light shine spray like CHI Enviro Smoothing Shine Spray to add shine to your hair. If you need to seal the hair and combat frizz use a serum like CHI Silk Infusion.”
Lastly, do you have any expert tips on maintaining the style for someone with an active lifestyle i.e, people who work out regularly or athletes?
“Sorry, but blowouts revert the minute you sweat or if there is any moisture in the air. Smoothing treatments help clients blow out their own hair faster by making natural hair more manageable and elongating curls. With a smoothing treatment like a Brazilian Blowout or Affirm Texture Release, it can help make the hair easier to blow dry, seal the hair, and add shine. Smoothing treatments can help extend the life of the blow dry but if you perspire or go near any moisture your hair will still revert the same.”
While, unfortunately, it looks like there’s no magic to prevent the return of your curls and coils when moisture is involved, you can style your hair in a way to reduce the effect. You can always minimize your hair’s contact with the sweat through a bun, ponytail, or protective style.

As an admittedly lazy natural, ponytails and puffs are one of my favorite everyday styles. Whether I’m trying to rectify a failed hairstyle or I’m putting off detangling for another day, a puff is guaranteed to be cute, quick, and easy. There’s nothing better than a fluffy, voluminous, curly or coily ponytail. And because it’s an “everyday” style, it’s easy to fall into the habit of consistently styling it the same way.
One of the advantages to a ponytail is that while it is simple and easy to wear, it is simultaneously a versatile and flexible style. It can be as wild or tame as you want it. A little creativity goes a long way, and the possibilities are endless!
