Why do a hot oil treatment?
Hot oil treatments can improve the health of your hair by adding softness, which leads to easier to maintenance and styling. Hot oil treatments can also help treat scalp conditions, when used regularly. We have to take extra care of our curls because they are more fragile during this time of year, as the cold air causes dryness with our hair and skin.
How to choose your oil
Before you select an oil, you should ask yourself why you are giving your hair a hot oil treatment. Are your curls dry and dull? Are you experiencing breakage and want to prevent split ends? Answering these questions will help determine the best oil for your needs. If you are looking for an oil that will help your curls better retain moisture, then argan oil and olive oil are great options. If you are looking to strengthen your hair, coconut oil can help treat your hair. You can also select oil based on your curl pattern. If you have wavy or Type 2 hair, you should want to try a lightweight oil to prevent your hair from weighing down. If your curls are tighter, you might want to try a heavier oil. Tighter curl patterns are more prone to dryness, as the hair shaft tends to be more open in comparison with looser textures or straight hair.
How to heat the oil
There are various ways to heat the oil, with one option being the microwave. You can pour the desired amount of oil in a microwavable bowl and warm the oil for about 30 seconds. Still not hot enough for you? Try 10-second intervals and check the temperature.
Remember that your scalp is more sensitive than your fingers, so do test drops by applying a small amount on your fingers and placing it on your scalp. Is your oil already in a bottle? You can also heat water in a double boiler pot on the stove and place the bottle in the water. It should not take long for the oil to warm up. If both of these options are not for you, you can apply the oil to your hair and sit under a hooded dryer for 15 min. If you do not have a hooded dryer, you can use a plastic cap covered by a thermal heat wrap.

What do you use for hot oil treatments?

In addition, thick oil will give your hair long-lasting moisture where you will not have to moisturize your hair as often. Whether you are contemplating starting your natural hair journey or you are in the middle of the ride, it’s a great idea to start documenting your hair journey. It’s never too early or late! You don’t have to be a photographer or the best writer to document your journey through videos, photos, and writing. Here are the six reasons why you should document your hair journey.
Observe your growth
One reason that curlies decide to wear their hair natural is to obtain healthy, long hair. Documenting your hair growth can show how much your hair grows at a point in time. Ways to document your hair growth is to take photos and videos. A lot of curlies do length checks to measure how much their tresses have grown. How do you perform a length check? Easy, extend a cluster of strands against your body. Measure your hair and write the measurement in a journal. Make sure that you measure a variety of areas, including your crown and nape. This will also help you observe whether you are experiencing breakage.
Remember which products & hairstyles work
This is a great way to see what products work for your hair. When you try a product, you shouldn’t decide whether you like it or not based on your first experience. Try the product for at least a month and write down your experience in a journal at each use. If that product is making your hair look healthy and shiny, take photos for documentation. This gives you a chance to know which products work best so you can keep getting the results that you want. If a hair product doesn’t work, write down your experience. You may revisit it in the future and it will give you a chance to compare experiences. Also, document hairstyles and techniques in your journal. If will help you along the way to achieve the perfect twist out!

Monitor your health
If you keep a journal of all the products and practices that you have indulged in during your journey, it gives you a resource to fall back on. You may experience health issues such as skin/scalp problems, allergic reactions, or more serious conditions. You can look back at your journal to see what products you have used or hair supplements that you have ingested. This can lead to solving a health issue which could then lead to note what products or practices you should avoid.
Observe emotional growth
When you make the decision to wear your hair natural, you should feel confident. You have decided to wear your hair in its natural state and a lot of people are not comfortable with doing that. Document all of your emotions during your journey. You may have felt insecure during the beginning when you decided to transition or big chop. The awkward stage after your big chop could have made you unsure. Once you share all of these emotions in your journal, you will see your emotional growth once you become more confident and comfortable with your hair. It will make you feel proud! Also, include snap shots of your great hair days! Look at those photos during the times where you are not so happy with your hair. It will make you smile.
Monitor your budget
Having natural hair is not expensive, your spending habits are. Although being a product junkie affords you the opportunity to try various products, keeping up with bandwagons or scratching every itch to try every new product on the market can cause you to disregard your budget. By nature, most (not all”> hair products with higher quality of ingredients tend to be more expensive, regardless of the intended consumer (e.g. relaxed, natural”>. Documenting how often you purchase products will help you determine if you should purchase larger quantities or try another brand.
For memories
You can treat your journal like a scrapbook and document your natural hair journey for memories. This should be a happy experience for you. You’re supposed to have fun with your hair. It’s great to document when you decide to straighten your hair, change your hair color, or get that sassy cut that you always wanted. Your journal will also be there to revisit those memories.

Do you document your hair journey? How has it helped?
I understand that it can be disappointing. Some curlies have a particular vision when they decide to wear their hair in its natural state. When magazines and ads do feature women with textured hair, they tend to primarily use women with curl definition. Much of the natural hair YouTube content is focused around attaining curl definition (hints why every company has a gel, custard, and pudding marketing to that desire”>. However, there is no need for hair envy. It can take some time to come to terms and accept the natural texture and behavior of your hair. Embrace your frizz and accept that defined curls don’t make your natural hair journey.
You took the big step to wear your hair in its natural. This is huge curl friend! You decided to accept the hair texture that you were born with. That is a step that everyone isn’t ready for. Give yourself a hug right now! Now it’s time to think about why your hair texture is frustrating you. Is the frizz overwhelming you? Did your wash and go not turn out as expected? You have to be honest with yourself about the real reasons why it’s frustrating you.
Now that we accepted our texture and our frustration, it’s time for a or the solution. Embrace your frizz! Rock your ‘fro that doesn’t have pronounced curls! The thing that makes us curly girls stand out is that everyone’s hair is different. You may not look like the next curly girl that you see down the street, on YouTube, or in ads. And that’s ok! This is what makes us unique and make them stare in awe of how you achieved that fabulous volume! There is no need to go on an anti-definition campaign. No need to put down someone else’s aesthetic to celebrate yours. I’m just saying that it’s not the end of the world. There are ways to achieve hairstyles with definition. Braid outs and twists out are great options. As the days go by, your hair will become bigger and less defined. In order to keep the definition, it’s best to apply product and re-twist every night or two. Roller sets, rod sets, and straw sets are also other ways to achieve defined curls. These styles take a little longer to create, but you will obtain defined curls that will last. For maintenance, simply put on a satin cap at night. In the morning, fluff and apply light oil for sheen. Curlformers are also a way to create defined curls. Curlformers are very similar to rod sets and a lot of curlies achieve great results from them! For reviews you can peruse some YouTube tutorials or even visit our CurlTalk forums to research more information.
Regardless of if you decide to wear your hair in defined curly styles or your big frizzy hair, you are still beautiful. The curls don’t make the curly girl, the curly girl makes the curls. Accept your texture and let your confidence glow.
Do you find it challenging to embrace your frizz?
Hair can face many types of stress that affect the overall health of our hair. One of those stresses can be the type of water we expose to. Some curlies are moving to different areas that have a different type of water that their hair, skin, and body are not accustomed to. Some curlies have or currently deal with having hard water, which can cause residue and exposure to rust and minerals. Hard water can cause the hair to be dull, dry, and damaged. Now that we’re in the summer months, people enjoy being outdoors. Constant sun exposure can lead to dry hair and change your hair color to a few hues lighter. If you enjoy swimming in a pool, you have to consider the effects of chlorine. Constant exposure to chlorine without proper hair care can cause breakage and an irritable scalp. It can also cause your hair to turn a greenish color.
There are different solutions to help improve these issues. Some have tried a variety of deep conditioners, rocking hats, and wearing swim caps to limit exposure of environmental impurities. Is there another way that you can try to improve these environmental impurities? There may be an answer for you that can help improve the look and health of your hair.
