A new school year brings the hope of doing things better than last—getting better grades, joining more clubs, and making new friends. Creating an efficient game plan for their hair is essential to give your child a chance to make these dreams a reality.
Confidence is key to a successful school year. Below are steps to ensure you’re out the door on time and style.
Plan Out Hairstyles In Advance
The easiest way to get ahead is by knowing what you’re doing instead of wasting time scrolling and attempting a look for the first time that’s impossible to achieve in your timeline. It’s also important to be aware of upcoming events – performances, dances, or school trips can alter your original plan.
You don’t want to waste time on a glamorous updo when a swim meet is just two days later! We’ve got your inspo page covered with articles about back-to-school hairstyles, or, for something with more flair, check out these looks from CurlFest 2024!
Doing Their Hair The Night Before
Eliminating a step before you wake will give you and yours more time to sleep in! Styles that can be slept in don’t just have to be protective. With the proper satin bonnet and a plan for a quick refresher in the morning, the possibilities are endless.
Use A Protective Style
As aforementioned, if you know there’s a round of upcoming events that a protective style is most suitable for, commit to one that gives you a break from the daily chore of styling. There’s a range of products specifically formulated for kids and protective styling – Cantu Care For Kids and SheaMoisture both have excellent options.
Coordinate With Your Partner
Everyone in the family should have a role in supporting one another. Work in tandem to make sure you guys are on the same page about the hairstyle schedule. This can mean taking shifts by one week on, one week off, or alternating days! Don’t doubt the potential of a shared Google Calendar or chore board to make things easier.

While surveying the NaturallyCurly team’s favorite releases from this year, we found a clear theme: recovery. If you’ve felt like there’s a need to repair your hair this year, look no further than these products from legacy and emerging brands.
Most of these products emphasize tending to curls damaged by coloring, heat styling, and other forms of manipulation. Celebrity brands, from Fenty Hair (Rihanna) and CÉCRED (Beyoncé) to 4U By Tia(Tia Mowry) and TPH by Taraji (Taraji P. Henson), shut down skeptics by delivering innovative packaging design and ingredients. Evergreen concerns such as volume, color maintenance, and scalp care are also covered in this list.
I am happy to share that 2024 is a great year to have curly, textured hair, with more products specifically developed for our needs than ever before. This non-exhaustive list of standouts that hit the shelves this year includes just some of our favorites.
1. The Doux – Press Play Thermal Heat Styling System
The Doux is recognized for both its outstanding products specifically formulated for textured hair and its artful marketing. This Black, Veteran, family-owned company also created a new line of products dynamically designed to be a heat protectant, anti-humidity, and bonding technology for silk-press-styled textured hair. The Press Play Thermal Styling System includes seven products suitable for every situation, from wash day to big-night-out styling, and can also be used on natural curls that don’t see a lot of heat technology. According to their website, the products were developed and tested in southern temperatures, ensuring they withstand humidity.
Another standout aspect of this new collection is the various bundle options for different types of curly girls: Proud Mary, Hybrid Hustler, Straight Gangster, Versatile Vixen, and more. Depending on your styling preferences and texture requirements, each bundle includes a product guide tailored to your needs.
2. Curlsmith – Volume Recipes
For fine-haired curly girls, volume is our white whale. While definition and hydration may come easily, the signature height and oomph we yearn for escape us since individual products and buildup easily weigh fine hair down. With this struggle in mind, Curlsmith released a major collection with every type of product geared towards that single goal: volume.
Need something light for your in between refresher days? Meet the Root Boost Uplifting Spray. Want a cream that plumps your hair without overhydrating? Let me introduce you to the Full Body Volumizing Lotion. With six products, there’s something for everyone in this new series.
3. Adwoa Beauty– Melonberry Proprietary Blend Hair Milk
The South African Kalahari melon plant produces berries that are rich in fatty acids, leaving hair moisturized and scalp conditioned. Additionally, these fruits are sustainably harvested from natural rainfall. The red raspberry and strawberry seed oils are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, protecting your hair and scalp from UV damage. Aside from giving your hair and scalp an Edenic treat, the formula is lightweight, meaning it can be used as a light refresher, daily styler, or leave-in conditioner.
4. Fenty Hair- Debut Collection
Remember when Rihanna broke the internet with her historically inclusive Pro Filt’r Foundation color range? She’s now attempting to break her record in the hair market, as curly, protective, and straight hairstyles and textures are all covered in Fenty Beauty’s debut hair care collection.
The eight products (and a bonus styling tool for edges) have a warm, ambery smell with yuzu and coconut. The Fenty website makes it easy to navigate which products are best for your needs by including a lookbook of models with a variety of hairstyles and textures and the accompanying products used to achieve their look. Notable are the three unique styling products: the HomeCurl Curl Defining Cream, the Controlling Type Hair Thickening Edge Control Gel, and the Gelly Type Strong Hold Gel.
The collection has products ranging from $18 to $36, and bundle options are currently on sale for $110 each.
5. DevaCurl- CurlHeights
This new 3-step collection from DevaCurl is intended for dry, fine curls, but can be used for any hair type. The lightweight formula for the cleanser, conditioner, and styling cream is designed to increase volume on lightweight hair that is easily weighed down by too much or too heavy a product. According to DevaCurl, the products show the best results when used together in a routine and applied when soaking wet hair in small dollops, applying more as needed.
6. Innersense – Healthy Hair Detox Set
The latest from Innersense is a four-piece bundle that includes 2 oz sizes of some of their most popular products. This is an excellent option for a curly girl on the move who needs some mid-vacation refreshment. Ingredients like kaolin, the soft white clay that absorbs buildup, and ultra-hydrating aloe vera make this $38 set a steal and travel essential.
7. CÉCRED- Debut Collection
If you thought the celebrity brand market was oversaturated, I implore you to hold your skepticism until you try Beyoncé’s award-winning, cruelty-free hair care collection. Suppose the sculptural packaging isn’t enough of a reason to entice customers. In that case, the key ingredient to most of the products is a patent-pending Bioactive Keratin Ferment – a version of the protein that rebuilds and strengthens hair follicles.
Largely inspired by and developed in tandem with her mother, former hair salon owner Tina Knowles, Cécred’s products are geared towards refreshing hair that has been through heat styling, coloring, and wig ringer. Products like the hyaluronic rich Hydrating Shampoo, vitamin e and antioxidant heavy Reconstructing Treatment Mask, and keratin ferment-based Moisturizing Deep Conditioner give customers the opportunity to have their own Bey-worthy at home spa day.
8. Briogeo- Style+Treat Collection
The basis of each of these products is a blend of super B vitamins: yuzu extract, an antioxidant that protects hair from heat and chemicals, and plum oil, which hydrates and adds shine. With this formula, the product has a fresh citrus and green scent with a musky finish. Unlike most other products included in this roundup, the Style+Treat collection is intended for all hair types and textures. The products are getting overwhelmingly positive reviews, with customers saying the formulas are lightweight while adding definition to their curls.
9. Redken- Acidic Bonding Curls
If frizz is your main problem, this release may be your best solution. Using citric acid and glycine to decalcify your hair while keeping it shiny, Redken’s latest trio is specifically designed for 3A+ curl patterns. To prevent buildup, Redken removed all silicones from the products in favor of their bonding treatment formula. This product line is also designed to repair hair damaged by coloring and heat styling.
10. Shea Moisture- New Bond Repair System
We know and love Shea Moisture for their reliable, curl-centric products. This year, they gave their loyal customers something new and useful in their Bond Repair System, a four-step routine to heal damaged 3A-4C curls. Amla oil, extracted from gooseberry, is the key ingredient for Shea Moisture’s new series. The fruit is said to be beneficial for hair growth, reducing dandruff, and preventing graying. Unique to this release is the inclusion of a regular conditioner in addition to a lightweight leave-in conditioner option for refresher days!
11. 4U by Tia – Soft Curl Defining Mousse
Tia Mowry might remind you of the 90s, but the new mousse from her hairline is anything but retro. Alcohol-free, with a strong-hold and frizz-control formula, means this is the mousse of this year. The formula is made with Hemisqualane, also known as Hemi15 – a patented, renewable sugarcane-based alternative to silicone. The vegan ingredient list also includes chia seeds, flaxseed (for curl strengthening), and lilac extract (for shine and UV protection). The $12.99 price makes this one of our roundup’s most affordable individual products.
12. KISS Colors and Care – Edge Fixer Extreme
If you’ve used the original Edge Fixer Gel from KISS, get ready to be nearly blown away but glued to the spot with the strong-hold remix. This version is intended for 4c, coily, and coarse hair without flaking. Avoid the wait from ordering online since this product is easy to find in person at Walmart or CVS near you.
13. TPH byTaraji- Ultra Chill Cooling Serum
Tea tree oil, biotin, and avocado are the three refreshing, strengthening, and calming key ingredients to Taraji P. Henson’s new scalp treatment. The product has a tri-touch applicator that makes direct-to-scalp soothing easy and effective. While this can help with winding down on wash day, the Ultra Chill was actually developed to be used immediately after installing braids for some much-needed R&R.
14. Dae- Signature & Leave-In Trio
Inspired by Arizona’s sunny climate and dreamy landscapes, Dae is a new hair company with vegan ingredients. This bundle is for the curly-girl seeking minimalism: a shampoo, a conditioner, and a mist leave-in that can be used on wash and refresher “Daes.” The warm citrus scent will have you feeling a summer breeze year-round.
15. Ceremonia – Mascarilla de Guava
The Latinx-owned and inspired by Ceremonia has received plenty of acclaim for its core products. Their newest release, a guava and agave-based hair mask, is no different, as it’s already been awarded by Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, and Glamour for its healing and hydrating benefits. Specifically formulated with vitamin C rich ingredients to repair hair that’s been overexposed to UV rays and heat damage, this mask is perfect for someone who may have spent too much time by the pool this summer. 16. Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils – Braid + Twist Collection
Just like the name suggests, this release from Aunt Jackie’s is specifically formulated for hair that goes through the twist, braid, and loc process. The key ingredients are honey, which acts as an antioxidant and increases moisture retention, and the biotin vitamin, which stimulates keratin production. The products can all be used before, during, and after braiding to keep hair nourished and shiny. At $8.99 a product, the entire four-piece collection can be bundled for an affordable $31.99.
17. Niles + Chaz- Debut Collection
While this year’s innovations have provided us grownups with plenty of options, children with textured hair need clean, safe product options they can use, too. Niles + Chaz is the new hair care line from Iva and Miles Coulter (whom you may recognize from Netflix’s Luke Cage), a couple that wanted a formula tailored to the unique needs of their children’s mixed-textured hair, using 90% naturally derived ingredients.
Products include a detangler, a curl refresher spray, a styling cream, and a pre-shampoo scalp treatment. With colorful packaging reminiscent of shows from your own childhood, like Rocko’s Modern Life and Rocket Power, and prices ranging from $8-$16, this debut collection will make wash day more fun for you and your kids without breaking the bank.
18. African Pride – Feel It Formula
Peppermint, rosemary, sage: this isn’t the herb garden you’ve been tending to, but the ingredients to restorative, calming Feel It Formula collection from African Pride. The Strengthening Shampoo, Mask, Balm, and Oil can be used fresh and old protective styles on wash day, from edges and nape to the top of your scalp. Better yet, the entire collection can be bundled for $22.79 at Target.

In the summer of 2020, when many of us were inside with too much time on our hands, people were revisiting the game of beauty salons at home. During this period, some started documenting the phenomenon of realizing they had curly hair by way of the right styling steps.
While you can’t trick your hair into a completely different pattern without the use of heat styling tools, certain products can help refine your pattern and accent your curls. This is especially true among the cuspers on the wavy-curly 2c/3a pattern.
Wavy-curly hair is unique because you’ll find multiple curl patterns on a single head. While some curls may take the tight s-shape form, others will have a looser shape, like a spaghetti noodle you test for readiness. You can brush through curly-wavy hair on the first try without resistance.
The goal in styling this hair type may be to make your whole head uniform. Another is to encourage the hair to be more curly. While some key differences exist between wavy and curly hair, the curly-girl styling methods can greatly support 2C-3A wavy-curly hair types.
1. Get a suitable haircut for wavy-curly hair
Video Source: @curlyhairdaze
The correct haircut by a curl specialist will provide the structure your hair needs to attain more refined curls and uniformity across your head.
2. Condition with lightweight, curl-centric products
Even coarse, wavy-curly hair will benefit from lightweight products such as the Pattern Lightweight Conditioner, which doubles as a co-wash. A light leave-in conditioner like Not Your Mother’s will keep your hair hydrated and protect it from heat styling without weighing it down.
3. Use a mousse
While most 3A+ curlies will opt for a gel to get a cast, wavy-curly hair doesn’t require much hold. A heavy gel will almost certainly weigh your hair down. Like Curlsmith’s Bouncy Strength Volumizing Foam, a volumizing mousse still offers hold. For a more affordable option, Aussie’s Headstrong Volume Mousse is also specifically formulated for fine or wavier hair.
4. Use your fingers or brush to make coils
Wrap a wet curl with your finger or brush to create ringlets. Depending on how much hair you wrap each time, you can make these smaller or larger. I find brushes like the Bounce Curl Defining Brush to be the most helpful, as you can brush through the ridges on the back of the paddle or use the handle to get the desired effect.
5. Create extra hold with a light gel
As aforementioned, a hard cast will probably do worse than good, but for days, you may encounter curl-disrupting elements; a little gel-like Rizos Curls Light Hold Gel can protect from frizz without weighing down your hair. While on this step, be careful to coat your clumps rather than rake through them – doing so will break up the curls. Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control gel is a weather-specific option also designed to target frizz without using sulfates or parabens.
6. Diffuse with a heat protectant
Video Source: @kurlywavykaren
Diffusing can always help increase volume, but it can also cause heat damage. Wavy-curlies should especially proceed with caution and not diffuse too often or without a heat protectant. Spray your hair with the Mizani Style Shifter Society Heat Protectant Spray before diffusing. Try a flexible diffusing head, like the Shark FlexStyle Curl Defining Diffuser used in the video below.
Like all curly hair, wavy-curly hair can vary greatly in pattern from day to day. Have an adaptable attitude and make the goal to love your hair, curly or wavier, in its natural fluctuation.

Behold: summer! Curlies yearn for volume to match their torrid days and nights this season, but the elements pose a constant threat, and the fine-but-curly hair texture makes gravity-defying curls even more difficult to achieve. High heat, humidity, and winds can disrupt the definition and volume you devoted so much time to during the styling process.
Fine curly hair, which refers to the size of each individual hair, requires specific products to hold the curls without weighing them down amid heat and other summertime-induced conditions. Whereas the strand count between fine and coarse hair does not differ, the circumference of the strands do: fine hairs are simply thinner than coarse ones.
Common issues with fine hair include product buildup, over-conditioning, and damage from heat styling. Nothing yucks my yum like a flat mop of undefined curls after I took multiple steps to make my hair look perfect. This article will address these problems while guiding you through a routine that keeps your curls thriving; heat waves be damned!
At NaturallyCurly, we want our readers to be active without the dread of frizzy, deflated curls. By following these steps, you can have your halcyon summer.
1. Cleanse with a Clarifying Shampoo
Fine curls experience build-up more easily than coarse ones because of the thinness of the hair strands and the space between hair follicles on the scalp. If you’re in the pool all day, it’s essential to clear out those harsh chemicals.
To start with a fresh, clean base, use a clarifying shampoo, like the Un-Do-Goo from Malibu C, which has zero sulfates and parabens. The short ingredient list gives you exactly what you need to leave your scalp refreshed without being too harsh.
2. Scrub with a Scalp Massage Tool
A scalp massager can break down the buildup of products we use to define our curls. Excess dirt, sand, and oils require something denser, narrower, and more consistent than fingers to clear out the mess. Using a scalp massager, like this one from Rizo’s, specifically designed for curly hair, can also release tension. Upgrade your washday to an at-home spa treatment.
3. Hydrate with a Lightweight Conditioner
Fine hair loves hydration like all curls but can only carry so much in the strands’ smaller circumference. Lightweight conditioners use seed oils like grape or flaxseed rather than heavy butter like shea or coconut. The less ingredients, the better! When you’re on washday, use a full-spectrum conditioner like the Fable & Mane Volumizing Conditioner for Fine, Thinning Hair, which has Amla extract, a natural UV protectant, when you’re getting more sun than usual.
Try a leave-in, like this one from Innersense, to refresh and hydrate your curls on day 3 or 4. It also contains rosemary oil, which promotes hair growth. Thoroughly rinse after this.
4. Strengthen with a Protein Treatment
Keratin, the protein in your hair, is essential to keeping fine hairs strong. This protein treatment from Ouidad is specifically formulated for fine hair: it’s lightweight and in mousse form, meaning it can be used after conditioning and before styling. Ingredients like rice and vegetable proteins will enrich and protect your curls!
5. Style with a volumizing foam or strong-hold gel
Less is more when it comes to fine curls – a heavy cream and combination of products will quickly weigh the hair down. Keep it simple with a volumizing mousse that fills the space between follicles or gel, which holds them in place. The Curlsmith Bouncy Strength Volume Hair Foam is made paraben-free with Hemp Seed and Rice Protein Complex – remember, these are the ingredients fine hair thrives with.
For extra hold, use a gel-like Jessicurl Spiralicious Styling Gel. Be sure to shake the bottle before use, and if your cast is too firm, just crunch it out after drying! Glycerin is one of the key ingredients in this product, increasing elasticity and preventing breakage in your hair. As always, ensure your hair is soaking wet before applying these products.
6. Define and Refine with Finger Curls or a Brush
Thin curlies are more likely to lose their definition throughout the day. Be proactive and coil your hair with your fingers or a brush after applying your products to soaking wet hair. The Denman D3 is the gold standard, with a long handle designed to coil curls around.
7. Diffuse
Video Source: @naturalfrecklesandcurls
Effectively drying your hair is essential to creating that volume that you started with the styling products. A diffusing blow dryer is the best tool for this step, but there are options for drying without additional purchases that can assist in volumizing hair. Focus on the roots first.
Using your fingers to lift your roots while drying your hair upside down helps create a hold in the curl structure. Slightly rubbing your scalp can also loosen the hair, adding volume. You can use claw clips through your scalp in various sizes to help lift the hair at the roots while you dry.
8. Finish with Spritz and Pick
Just like the happy-hour Aperol you’re enjoying after work, your hair also deserves a little treat. This Ceremonia Guava Rescue Hair Heat Protectant Spray can be used as a primer before heat styling or as a refresher in between wash days.
Natural UV protectants are essential before stepping out in the sun, while Blue Agave and Avocado Oil add hydration and shine. To shake up curls that may have a cast post-styling, a hair pick at the roots adds extra lift. Be sure to begin at the roots on completely dry hair, pulling out an inch and stopping before brushing through the entire curl.

Each new season inspires us to change our outward appearance to match the natural world around us. Since dying your hair a lush, vibrant green isn’t a simple or universally flattering way to step into summer, trying waves like the beaches we’re living at or dreaming of is another great option.
While wavy hair is mostly associated with 2a-c textures, any texture can achieve a natural or defined wavy look with some styling and product.
Whether you’re trying to emulate Old Hollywood glamor, bohemians of the ’60s, or Disco Divas, wavy hair is a fun way to embody the sultriness of summer. When I see someone rocking a wavy hairstyle, I know they’ve got something fun ahead of them.
While intimidating, if not exhausting, the rapid trend cycle has bequeathed us with new or reworked variations on wavy hair that encourage experimentation and messiness. With all your summer plans, who has time to put their hair in curlers of alternating directions, blow dry, and then brush out? Charli XCX and other indie sleaze fashionistas are giving us a whole new meaning for bedhead.
On the other hand, the surreal French Riverian glamor of the Cannes Film Festival is a reliable, annual source of inspo for those evenings when you want to spend an indulgent few hours getting ready for a Big Night Out.
We’ve included products for these styles to make your glam time more leisurely and less hectic.
1. Venusian Waves
These relaxed, damp waves lengthen the face and give the appearance that you emerged from the ocean.
2. Middle Part-y Girl Waves

Use our curl formers in angled formations to achieve a crimped yet beachy effect. This sharp hairstyle is flexible for professional and social settings.
7. Pageboy hat and soft waves

You get a curtain bang by gently parting your bang in the middle and cutting diagonally downward from there. This style adds a touch of coyness to your look.

These waves allow your natural texture to shine for a short, angular cut.

24. Wide Headband
This practical and sporty accessory can be rolled up in your purse. Take it out at the club, beach, or before you leave your house to create volume in the back while keeping hair out of your face.
25. Messy Top Knot with tendrils

This look is flexible, as it’s to be formal enough for a big date and casual enough for a flirtatious errands look. By clipping or tying the hair up while leaving the waves out, the volumized style lifts the jaw while creating a beachy essence.
A popular summer tradition is keeping a list of things to accomplish with friends before the season’s end. Adding a few of these hairstyles lends a fun and creative way to scratch a few items off that list while trying something new.
At NaturallyCurly, we want our readers to feel empowered by the endless possibilities that come with embracing who they are and pursuing their goals.
Summer can be whatever you want it to be – a time to sculpt an improved version of yourself, a time of leisurely introspection. And, of course, time for limitless fun when we’re off work at 5, and the sun doesn’t go down until 9. Styling your hair is a way to express these possibilities without breaking the bank.
