We are still swooning over Amandla Stenberg’s Oscars hairstyle that gave us so much life when she strutted down the red carpet. So it was only right we tapped the visionary behind this intricate braided updo, Vernon Francois.
Vernon is known for styling a few of the top naturalistas in the game such as Lupita Nyong’o, Willow Smith, Janelle Monae, Ava DuVernay and many more. He continues to remind us the versatility of natural hair and that it is truly a form of art, but he has definitely set the bar with this vintage inspired finger waves braids.
According to the celebrity hairstylist he said, “1920’s was our focus. We wanted glamour, sophistication with an equal blend of tradition, paying homage to Amandla’s curly coily hair texture. The metallic crystal chain-tiered gown by Miu Miu also helped bring the vision to life.”
Here’s What Products He Used to Create This Braided Updo:
Vernon Francois Mist Hydration Water and added a few pumps of the Cream of Nature Argan Oil Style & Shine Foam Mousse to help set the hair. Finished it off with Vernon Francois Braids and Loc Spray ~ Scalp Nourishment and Got2be hairspray then gel for the edges.

When rocking a protective style it’s important to take care of your natural hair and scalp and he dropped a few gems on the best tips to maintain your protective style. “Wrapping your hair with a silk scarf or satin head wrap before you go to bed at night is key. Using a little bit of serum on your ends will also help with breakage and will encourage manageability, preserve edges, stop breakage, lock in moisture and promote growth.”
He also explained that build-up can be beneficial in preserving a protective style and shared the best oils to use for your scalp to maintain a healthy hair regimen. He said, “Sweating on the scalp or scalp build-up for most hair types can be quite beneficial a bit of build up really helps to maintain the protective style. Using a sulfate free shampoo will definitely help minimize build-up overtime. Look out for key ingredients in products such as Jojoba and Sunflower oils, they are good for locking in hydration. Tea tree oil is another great oil that moisturizes and soothes the scalp.”

Read more: How I’m Growing Out My Natural Hair After My Big Chop
Image:@queensconquer by Brio Photography
I have coarse, 3c/4a, medium porosity hair. I big chopped about three years ago because of the damage from relaxing my hair for over twenty years and bleaching it, so it was a must that I cut off the dead ends and start fresh. Although, I loved my pixie cut I decided in the last year that I wanted to let my hair grow out. The more I focused on scalp care and creating a healthy hair regimen, the more my curls began to flourish. The longer my hair got, the more protective styles I was able to experiment with including sew-ins, feed-in braids and goddess faux locs. While my hair was growing out, I tried my best not to cut it and let it even out before I got a haircut.
To kick off 2019, I decided it was time for quick switch up. I was referred to the Curl Whisperer, April Kayganich, a hairstylist based in Austin at the Honeycomb Hair Boutique who is known to give curls life and she did not disappoint. Not only did she reshape my hair, but she gave me the most gorgeous curls, so it was only right that I share the curly love. Keep reading to find out her cutting technique and curly girl tips to get defined voluminous curls.
Curl by Curl Cutting Technique
“I almost always start on dry hair when cutting curls. I started in the back of your head and made slight diagonal sections on the left and right side and followed those lines cutting curl by curl. I continued this moving up the head and moved to each side of your head in the front to connect the shape. Curls tend to shrink when a lot of length is removed, so I am pretty conservative when it comes to removing length before the Cleansing and styling portion of the appointment. I do a lot of dry cutting after the hair is styled as well and that’s when I went in and visually balanced the shape in the front using a freehand technique.”
Image:@_thehalfrican
Wash & Style
“Curly hair needs moisture, so I used my go to cleanser which is New Wash Rich. It isn’t shampoo, but you don’t need to condition afterwards which is pretty cool, but it works with your natural oils to cleanse and condition the hair without stripping anything away from your hair. I made sure your hair was really wet and applied a generous amount of New Wash on the ends and then massaged what little bit was left on my hands into your scalp. I then detangled with a wide tooth comb and rinsed the product from your hair thoroughly. After words, I used clips to work in sections adding more water to your hair and then applying Skimdo from root to tip using a raking motion. The curls around your hairline needed some love, so I did a cold rinse to reduce the frizz, applied a small amount of Skimdo and finger coiled those curls. We then put you under the hood dryer for 15 minutes, which is almost like air drying, then diffused your curls so we could achieve more volume.”
How to Prepare for a Curly Cut and What NOT To Do
- Come to the appointment with your hair down, dry and detangled with little product in it. I don’t mean having it in a bun or a slick backed pony then taking it down, but down so your stylist can see how many curl patterns you have, how your curls fall and how you normally style it. That helps us know how to style your curls when we get to the end of your appointment. I also like to mention that when I say detangled, I just mean having “fresh” hair. I prefer for my clients to have washed their hair within the last 1-3 days of the haircut so that way it saves on the amount of time the haircut can take. Some stylists charge by the amount of time in the chair or add a detangling fee so make sure to ask beforehand so you can prepare!
- Bring photos of shapes and lengths you like that are similar to your curl pattern and hair density. A lot of people come in asking for volume and will bring photos of someone who has a lot more hair than they do or a different curl pattern. Volume is not only determined by layers, but also by your hair density which can vary on different parts of the head.
- My only don’t is: Don’t be late!! Make sure to give yourself enough time to get to your appointment and to find the salon. That way you can have a little extra time to consult with your stylist to make sure you feel comfortable.

Retaining Moisture
“Moisture comes from water-not oils and butters! Water is key and I can’t stress it enough. Make sure your hair is soaking wet when you apply your products.”
Keys to Maximum Volume
“First, make sure you have a haircut that is either layered to give more volume or layers that are graduated to build weight. Second, use products appropriate for your texture and curl type! For example: if you have fine hair that is a looser curl, don’t use a thick cream, look for foaming mousse or things like spray gel. Diffusing is key if you want instant volume and make sure to start off with your head upside down. You can also set your hair at the roots with double prong clips or Deva Clips if you have them! You insert the clips at a 45 degree angle to your scalp and you can air dry this way.”
While the fashion and beauty industries continue to grapple with how to be more inclusive and representative of all consumers, there are a few brands that are working hard to get it right. New York Fashion Week packed a few powerful punches of standout moments where diversity was not only used as a marketing tool, but also as an empowering message that told remarkable stories. Here are the top six moments that made a statement beyond style and showcased models of a variety of ages, sizes, ethnicities, and genders.
Texture on the Runway
What better way to celebrate 20 years of NaturallyCurly than with an epic display of textured hair on the runway to kick off New York Fashion Week? Once again, Texture on the Runway powered by Sally Beauty, proved itself as the most diverse show during New York Fashion Week (in my humble opinion”>. With models of all sizes, ages, curl types, ethnicities, and genders, NaturallyCurly’s biggest hair event of the year exemplified that beauty comes in every form.
The runway showcased iconic hair and fashion looks from seven of our favorite hair brands: Camille Rose Naturals, Cantu, Carol’s Daughter, Creme of Nature, Mielle, Shea Moisture, and The Mane Choice.

The designer Abrima Erwiah and actress Rosario Dawson offered a sustainable collection of vibrant, wearable clothing that brought a joyous moment of glory to NYFW. As a recent winner of the Council of Fashion Designers of America Lexus Fashion Initiative for its efforts in sustainability, the brand is deeply committed to using fashion to make the world a better place by supporting artisans and empowering women in West Africa. From bold, colorful prints to voluminous afros, this show exemplified pure melanin magic.
Cushnie

Carly Cushnie took center stage to present her first solo collection to celebrate her Caribbean roots in a bold, elegant, and sexy way. Coral reds, neon yellows, seafoam greens, and nautical blues danced down the catwalk with touches of simplicity and femininity. With a powerful message of natural beauty and empowerment, she featured top model Winnie Harlow, who closed the show in true fierce fashion.
Chromat

Designer Becca McCharen-Tran continues to remain true to her vision of creating an inclusive space of unconditional body acceptance. The upbeat show was inspired by wet t-shirts to reclaim the experience of hiding under a giant t-shirt at a pool party (when you’re too embarrassed to be seen in a swimsuit”>. The show featured body-positive advocates Ericka Hart and Mama Caxx, who are using their platforms to shift the trajectory of how women are viewed in media. As the influencers came down the runway, the crowd cheered and showed their support for their relentless work.
Pyer Moss

Designer Kerby Jean-Raymond showcased his fifth collection in the most intentional way by paying homage to black culture and holding his show in a historically black neighborhood, Brooklyn’s Weeskville. Jean-Raymond is known for using his designs as a way to broadcast racial inequality and social injustice, and this collection was no different as models strutted down the runway wearing messages that read, “See us now?” and “Stop calling 911 on the culture.” As if the historically significant runway location and bold clothing themselves weren’t moving enough, a gospel choir sang Stevie Wonder’s “Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away,” as the all-black cast of models walked the show — including the effortlessly beautiful afro Queen, Ebonee Davis.
Savage X Fenty
Image: AP images
Leave it to Rihanna to close out Fashion Week in the most unique way possible by unleashing her latest loungewear and lingerie collection, Savage X Fenty. She presented her collection in a lush tropical greenhouse setting that showcased true diversity and a celebration of womanhood. It was by far one of the most epic experiences fashion week has ever seen, and it featured an elaborate production with dancers, runway choreography, an incredibly produced set and an expansive line-up of models representing a variety of ethnicities, shapes ,and sizes — including Slick Woods, Paloma Elsesser, Molly Constable, Joan Smalls, and sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid.

This summer has been filled with endless adventures, exploring new places and trying fun hairstyles. One of my most memorable experiences was visiting Chicago to attend Lollapalooza, one of the biggest music festivals in the world that features the top musical styles ranging from EDM to hip-hop.
Bed Head by TIGI hosted an epic hotel party at the Bed Head Hotel — an exclusive pop-up party for festival goers to sip on refreshing cocktails, get glam and enjoy good vibes by guest DJs. The two-day activation brought out artists and beauty influencers including Sabrina Claudio, Brittany Sky, and Madison Beer. Not to mention some of the best female DJs were spinning the hottest tunes, including Caroline D’Amore and Dani Thorne.
Every music festival has its own personality. Lollapalooza is the perfect blend of boho meets 90s’ street style. Festival style is always a hot topic and one hairstyle that was everywhere were space buns. You could spot people wearing them sleek, curly, braided — and sometimes doused with glitter at the roots. Some pulled up all their hair up into the twists, while others let half of it flow freely.
Being that this was my first time at Lollapalooza, it was only right I joined in on the festival fun. Kimberly Michelle, TIGI stylist and educator, styled my hair using Screw It, a curl hydrating jelly oil that adds moisture, and Get Twisted, the anti-frizz hairspray that fights humidity to combat frizz for up to 72 hours. Being that space buns are a classic festival style, I chose to go with that style and added some flair by incorporating a braid down the center and also some intricate accessories.
Kimberly Michelle truly made my Sporty Spice dreams come true. She even spilled the tea on pro tips to preserve my style while at the festival and the top curly girl tip to avoid dry hair. Check out our candid conversation below and let me know what you think of my festival style.
What I love most about festivals is that you can meet people from all over the globe who connect about music, art, and fashion. I had the opportunity to meet so many curlfriends and women conquering the music industry, such as Caroline D’Amore. She performed one of my favorite DJ sets, and she rocked a fierce festival hairstyle that stole the show. Watch our interview below along with other curly girls sharing their top tips and what their natural hair represents.
The TIGI stylists offered attendees complimentary hairstyles specializing in boho braids, twisted topknots, and bold textures. It’s no secret that texture is at the forefront of the beauty industry and will only continue to lead the way as more women embrace their natural texture.
The TIGI team did an amazing job styling attendees’ hair and I was curious to know their inspiration for these creative hairstyles. Each unique hairstyle was created with some of Bed Head’s top-selling stylers. A festival essential? Oh Bee Hive — a dry shampoo that adds texture and volume, but also absorbs excess oils and refreshes hair after dancing all day and night at the festival. I caught up with a few TIGI stylists to learn how to create each style. Hear more from the stylists and how to recreate these looks below.
Thank you, TIGI, for inviting me to hang out at the Bed Head Hotel and Lollapalooza for an unforgettable experience.

History has been made!
In the latest issue of Vogue Beyonce graces the cover and gets realer than she ever has before. In its 125-year history, Vogue has never before featured the work of an African American photographer on the cover – until now. Beyonce had complete creative control to share her truth in this issue and she chose Tyler Mitchell to shoot the cover. Rather than rocking wigs, hair extensions and glamorous make-up, she appears in the issue wearing her natural hair and little to no make-up. “I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies. That’s why I stripped away the wigs and hair extensions and used little makeup for this shoot.”
I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies. That’s why I stripped away the wigs and hair extensions and used little makeup for this shoot.
She opens up about her life, her body, and her heritage in her own words and we’re so here for this celebratory moment of honesty.
The superstar, the creative genius, the wife, the mother, the woman. The 36-year-old singer wears many hats and while she receives countless amounts of recognition for all that she does and excels in, underneath it all is a woman, a real woman, with hopes that transcend music.
Recently, she was ridiculed and questioned about wearing her natural hair and her hair stylist, Neal Farinah, has officially confirmed it’s all natural. “So many times one is judged by their hair texture or skin color. I’m so proud and honored to have been a part of such an amazing shoot, braiding the queens all natural curly hair!”
On Representation & Legacy
Not only is Beyonce using her platform to inspire millions and create black excellence, but she’s opening doors for the ones to come by providing them with opportunities to be recoginzed for their talent. “It’s important to me that I help open doors for younger artists. There are so many cultural and societal barriers to entry that I like to do what I can to level the playing field, to present a different point of view for people who may feel like their voices don’t matter.”
“If people in powerful positions continue to hire and cast only people who look like them, sound like them, come from the same neighborhoods they grew up in, they will never have a greater understanding of experiences different from their own. They will hire the same models, curate the same art, cast the same actors over and over again, and we will all lose. The beauty of social media is it’s completely democratic. Everyone has a say. Everyone’s voice counts, and everyone has a chance to paint the world from their own perspective.”
“ I look at the woman I was in my 20s and I see a young lady growing into confidence but intent on pleasing everyone around her. I now feel so much more beautiful, so much sexier, so much more interesting. And so much more powerful.”

We are still breaking barriers. We are still curating culture. We are still opening doors for those who come behind us and honoring their legacy. We are actively using our platforms to empower others and create space for diversity, representation, inclusivity and social change. This moment is a huge milestone for our culture and it’s amazing to witness how Beyonce is using her power to shine a light on young creatives and changing the narrative around on how black women are perceived in media.
Are you here for this historic moment? Tell us your favorite messages from this iconic issue in the comments below.
It never fails that I walk into a store and my eye immediately gravitates to the neutral tones. No matter how old I get some things never change. Although I’m open to playing with prints you’ll usually see me in a solid color (usually white, black, creme or gray”> styled with minimal accessories. Speaking of accessories, these cute little colorful tassel earrings are the perfect accessory for any basic look.
It was a no brainer that I grabbed this mocha jumpsuit, it had my name written all over it! I love a good jumpsuit. Seriously, I have like 6 in my closet because they’re so easy and comfortable. I’ve spent countless mornings staring at my closet wondering what outfit to wear and jumpsuits solve all my problems because it’s a one & done look that requires minimum effort.
Living in Texas it’s essential to wear light-weight clothing during the Summer because we can have weeks of scorching hot days of 100 degrees or more. That is definitely one of the reasons I love this jumpsuit because of the breathable fabric, plus the romantic side tie, not to mention it has pockets!
Even though I love fashion, I try my best to be realistic and reasonable when shopping. I’ll ask myself questions such as “Where will you wear I this? Is it worth it? Do you love it?
Even though I love fashion, I try my best to be realistic and reasonable when shopping. I’ll ask myself questions such as “Where will I wear this? Is it worth it? Do I love it?” I’ve learned that if you don’t love it in the dressing room, you most likely won’t wear it. So try everything on and ask yourself those same questions when you’re shopping, believe me, it saves you lots of time and money.
Lately, I’ve been obsessed with using the finger coil technique to create defined curls. It’s super quick and easy and is great for any curl girl. Being that it’s extremely hot and humid in Texas majority of the year, it’s essential that I keep my hair moisturized with heavy butters to fight the frizz.
Since I’m growing my hair out, it’s been a great way to blend in my longer curls and keep my short cut looking fresh. I usually wash my hair the night before and coil it while it’s damp, then let it air dry overnight. Once my hair is dry I unravel the coils, then pick my root to add some volume and definition.
Here’s what I use:
- DETANGLER/LEAVE-IN: Kinky Curly Knot Today
- STYLER: ORS Styling Smoothie
- VOLUMIZER: Pick
Since I prefer to wear neutral tones, it was a must for me to add a pop of color with my accessories. Pom poms are one of Summer’s hottest trends and when I saw these sandals I knew I could wear them with multiple outfits since it has so many colors and I knew it would be a good investment.
One of my fashion rules is buy clothing that is transitional and can be worn on a variety occasions. This look is a great example of taking your look from desk to dinner effortlessly. If you love my look as much as I do you can get my jumpsuit and earrings from BeeHive and my sandals are from Target.

Image: Maureen Nicol founder and director of Campstory
Growing up as a first-generation Sierra Leonean-American, Maureen Nicol wanted to pay homage to her mother country in a meaningful way to empower generations to come by creating an educational and creative experience for children. She incorporated her passion for teaching and community organizing to create Camp Story, a summer camp which aims to strengthen the wings of young storytellers socially, emotionally, and artistically specifically low income and marginalized youth.
Maureen is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Texas at Austin studying Early Childhood Education. After teaching for several years, she noticed the power that the arts has on young children especially when it comes to identity, critical thinking, inquiry and building community. With the belief that all children should have the opportunity to have meaningful artistic experiences and the resources to tell their stories in the way they believe best, Camp Story was born.
“I created this to pay homage because that’s where my family is from and I know these children wouldn’t have this opportunity any other way. I show up for the people whom I feel need it most because I feel like I’m extensions of them.” – Maureen Nicol, founder and director of Camp Story
Image: @campstory
Maureen’s number one goal is to create a space where she is allowing youth to express themselves, their learning, and stories in a safe and creative environment. One of her most significant challenges, like most businesses, has been accessing capital, but that hasn’t stopped her from taking risks and following her passion. “Money and fundraising was definitely a challenge. Let’s be honest, money is always an issue. You may have a great idea, but if you don’t have the access to capital it’s hard to make it sustainable. The first time we hosted Camp Story, we made it work on a $3,000 budget and served 45 kids from ages 5 – 15 years old. Not only was it an opportunity for children to express themselves, but it also served as an opportunity for professional development for the teachers to collaborate to help create this memorable experience.
Image: @williethewayfarer
Maureen is known as the risk taker in her family and believes that regardless if you fail or succeed, there’s always a lesson learned. “The reason I have the confidence to take risks is because I started off with one risk and it didn’t let me down. It showed me that if I listen to my intuition and act on it, even though other people may not believe in it or trust it, I have faith in myself. You have to take risks in order to progress. No one who is comfortable and complacent will grow, so I see it as, I take a risk and I fail, or I take a risk and I do well. Either way, I’m winning because I learned something new.”
Image: Jessica Nicol founder of Daffina
Growing up as a middle child with two other sisters she values sisterhood and credits her oldest sister, Jessica Nicol, as her mentor who instilled three key values in her since a young girl. “Family, service and education definitely come to mind when it comes to things we cherish in our family. I take my role as the big sister very seriously and early on encouraged Maureen to follow her passion of teaching and serving others. Our parents taught us that helping others in need is priority. It’s important to identify issues that impact communities and do what you can to develop solutions.”
Jessica is a government consultant and the founder of Daffina African Clothing, which is a family owned business inspired by the love of African fashion to capture the beauty and history of their motherland. Jessica says that she is beyond proud of the work Maureen is doing with Camp Story and was grateful she was able to witness her in action last Summer when the entire family visited Sierra Leone for the first time in 20 years. “To see her in her element interacting with the teachers and students, I was very proud. She did an exceptional job planning and providing instructions to the staff in developing creative programs for the children. Though it was hosted in Sierra Leone, she partnered with the International School and there were children from all over the world that were impacted.”

Hey, NaturallyCurly world!
I’m Alexandra, one of the NaturallyCurly editors. I have a mix of Type 3b/3c curls, with medium porosity. I big chopped three-years ago and it has been an eye-opening journey learning how to care for my hair in its natural state. One change that has helped my hair become healthier and longer is creating a scalp care routine, it’s truly the foundation for healthy hair. I’ve seen so much growth over the past 6 months from implementing this. I wash my hair about twice a week and use scalp care products every other week, depending on how much build-up I’m experiencing. Here’s what I use to wash, style and refresh to get defined, bouncy and moisturized curls. Don’t forget to watch the video at the end for a step-by-step tutorial. Let’s get to it!
Wash Routine
Step 1: Shampoo with Camille Rose Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse
This is a great moisturizing shampoo that keeps my scalp clean without leaving my hair stripped. Not to mention it smells amazing!
Step 2: Condition with Innersense Hydrating Cream Conditioner
Like most curlies, a creamy conditioner is key and this is one of my favorites! I love how soft and defined this conditioner leaves my curls. I detangle my hair with the Curly Hair Solutions Flexy Brush and it’s great to use to clump curls.
Step 3: Towel dry hair with the Hair Remedie Frizz Eliminating Towel
For the longest, I didn’t think it was a big deal to use a microfiber towel to dry my hair until I did it! By using a microfiber towel it helps absorb a ton of excess water from freshly washed hair, eliminates frizz, and enhances natural curl definition.
Step 4: Apply a few drops of Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment
This scalp treatment is great to use after I wash my hair. I apply a few drops to my scalp to restore the balance and hydration in my scalp. It has a cooling sensation and it good to keep on hand to soothe my scalp when it’s itchy or irritated in between washes.
Styling Routine
Step 5: Rake through Design Essentials Almond & Avocado Curl Enhancing Mousse
Like you, I grew up hearing that mousses and gels leave hair crunchy and flaky, so I didn’t use either until recently and it has done wonders for adding hold and definition. This mousse is my absolute favorite because it controls frizz, especially in the humid months, adds shine and leaves my curls so bouncy.
Step 6: Apply the Aunt Jackies Curls & Coils Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel
Not only does this gel add definition to my hair, it’s packed with nourishing oils so it leaves my hair soft and moisturized. I rake this gel through my hair, then finger coil a few pieces in the front to add extra definition. If you’re not sure how to finger coil, watch the video below.
Step 7: Finish with the Ouidad Mongongo Oil
This is my secret weapon, yall! This multi-purpose oil is a what I use after I undo my finger coils. It’s the perfect lightweight, finishing oil that adds shine and controls frizz.
Refresh
Step 8: Curly Hair Solutions H20 Water Bottle
This mist water bottle is everything! I use it to refresh my curls in the morning and it is truly a must-have for curlies.
Step 9: Apply the SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Oil Leave-in
When my hair is really dry and in need of some TLC, this is my go-to! It’s a 2-in-1 detangler and leave-in conditioner that can be used to refresh and rehydrate day 3 or 4 curls.
Step 10: Fluff with a pick or the Spriggle
I don’t leave home without my pick. Whenever I’m in need of some extra volume or want to refresh my curls throughout the day, the spriggle always keeps my curls fluffy.

Cara is a NaturallyCurly Graphic Designer with 2c wavy hair. She washes her hair on Sundays and prefers to co-wash on Wednesdays. Like most wavies, her biggest hair struggle is keeping her waves volumunious, but with a little help from these Editors’ Choice Products, here’s how she keeps them looking full & fabulous!
Wash Routine
Virtue Pink Shampoo and Conditioner
The Virtue Smooth line makes her hair super soft and shiny. She didn’t know what to do with her hair the first time that she used the line because her wash and go dried so soft that it was kind of flat. But once she diffused her hair and did her clip tricks she got volume!
Carmella Marie Deep Conditioner
This conditioner is something you could accidentally eat. It looks like a pink smoothie and has a whipped texture. It makes her hair feel soft and hydrated. Cara prefers to deep condition with this about every other week and uses a shower cap for about five minutes.
Styling Routine
Treluxe leave-in
Even though Cara doesn’t usually like fruity smells for lotions and hair products, she loves this leave-in because it smells like fresh apple pie. I mean, who doesn’t love the smell of apple pie? She applies this on her soaking wet hair, then scrunches.
Salon Pro Exclusives Twin Olive Maximum Hold Gel
Cara doesn’t always use gels, but she says this one works really well! She rakes it through her waves, scrunches and then wraps her hair with a towel.
AG rosehip balm
Being that Cara has the designer eye, this package stood out to her! I mean who else gravitated towards a product simply because of cute packaging? She uses this when diffusing to help protect her hair against the heat. Tip: Once hair is towel dry , scrunch this into hair and diffuse upside down.
It takes a couple on seconds to kick in, but it cools and soothes, while possibly adding some volume. Apply this after diffusing.
Refresh
Curly Hair Solutions H20 Water Bottle
She not only uses this water bottle to refresh her hair, but also water her plants. When she gets up in the morning, she mists her head all over, then puts in a little spray on leave-in. Since the front of her hair doesn’t hold its curl as well as the back, she takes the front two sections of half of her hair and creates little space buns with a clip. Then, takes them down later in the day, shakes them out and she’s off!
Balanced Guru scalp oils
All of the Balanced Guru oils smell great, and they make her scalp feel nice. She applies this oil to her scalp once a week.
Eva NYC volume powder
When Cara’s hair is getting a little flat later on in the week, this is her go-to! She applies a little powder onto her roots and shakes it to add volume.
Body
Reshma turmeric soap
Tumeric has been a trendy ingredient found is several beauty products lately. Cara loves collecting soaps and she likes this one because it has a subtle smell and makes her feel clean.
Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen
Being that Cara has very fair skin, sunscreen is one of her essential life necessities. She likes this suncreen because it’s clear—it goes on like a gel, very soft and luxurious!

Tell us about your hair journey. . .
My hair was about four times as thick and coarse when I was a child as it is now. As a child, I had somewhat of a mullet helmet, and as it grew longer it became a giant mass of hair. I can remember relatives always telling me to put my hair up because I looked like a witch, and I remember always breaking hair ties because my hair was too thick to tie up. Needless to say, I spent years wishing in vain that my hair looked like the girls and women on TV and in magazines. Middle school was a time spent trying and failing, to straighten my hair with Velcro curlers and weak curling irons. That’s when I cut it short in an attempt to get the “Rachel,” I was so disappointed when my hair ended up looking nothing like Jennifer Aniston’s, and I didn’t understand why (hello hair type”>. This was also the era of Sun In, ouch.
In high-school, I discovered Infusium, which finally gave me the curl definition I had been missing all my life. It became my Holy Grail. I would put a towel over my shoulders and then douse my wet hair with Infusium, then air dry. Unfortunately, I still wasn’t satisfied and I was getting relaxers which the salons promised would straighten my hair, but never did. In college, I had my hair relaxed at a Filipino salon that finally did the trick. I’m sad to say that permanently banished my curls, and it took years to transition that straight hair out.
What made you decide to embrace your natural hair texture?
I’ve seen my hair mostly as an element of my style – at some points in my life I’ve preferred it straight, sometimes I’ve liked it curly. Sometimes long, short, blonde, purple. Ever since I realized how incredibly difficult it is to go from straight or colored back to curly, I’ve pretty much stuck to wearing it natural.
What has been the most memorable moment of your hair journey?
Cutting it all off! I had hair down to my belly button, it was wavy, balayage, and people loved it that way. When I cut it off into a pixie there were a lot of people who couldn’t understand why I would do that. They warned me that I was going to cry and miss my long hair, but I never did. I think before I cut my hair I had a lot of fear and what ifs – what if I’m not pretty without long hair? What if my hair gets damaged and won’t curl? What if I can’t pull off short hair the way bolder women can? Cutting my hair freed me from all of that.
What was your transitioning hair regimen?
To be honest it was a bit hopeless. I would wear my hair in a ponytail to hide the grow out, or I would straighten the roots to make them match the ends. When I bleached my hair blonde I had to transition that damage out. The bleach destroyed my hair, and eventually I was ready to cut it off. The curls that were left behind after my cut were the healthiest they’ve ever been!
What is your current hair regimen? Any favorite products you’d like to share?
My regimen is all about making my waves last as many days as possible without washing. On day 1 I cleanse, condition, and put a light styler in my hair. A few favorites for cleansing and conditioning are Elucence, DevaCurl’s Delight line, 2 Girls with Curls (the lavender smells so good”>. My favorite stylers right now are Kevin Murphy Killer Curls, Jessicurl Spiralicious, Camille Rose Aloe Whipped Butter Gel, and Everyone’s Style Hair Gel. My Holy Grail refresher is the Curl Keeper water bottle, which I use every morning to refresh my hair. With my waves, sleeping on them, pulling them back or up pretty much makes them straighten out, that’s why it’s essential for my refresh regimen to be on point. I wet my hair with the water bottle, then take a small amount of styler and rub my hands together until they’re coated with styler, then I scrunch my hair to encourage the curl. If I have time I air dry, but if my hair needs to be dry before I leave the house then I diffuse. The difference in my hair before and after this quick routine is like night and day.
Any advice you’d like to give other women who may be in the transition phase and need some encouragement?
Find ways to enjoy the challenges. When I was growing my hair out I dyed it platinum blonde, then when I got tired of dealing with the damage I chopped it into a short bob. Yes, of course, there were frustrating times, but when I look back on it I think of all of the fun I had expressing myself in those stages of my life.
