Image:@queensconquer by Brio Photography
I have coarse, 3c/4a, medium porosity hair. I big chopped about three years ago because of the damage from relaxing my hair for over twenty years and bleaching it, so it was a must that I cut off the dead ends and start fresh. Although, I loved my pixie cut I decided in the last year that I wanted to let my hair grow out. The more I focused on scalp care and creating a healthy hair regimen, the more my curls began to flourish. The longer my hair got, the more protective styles I was able to experiment with including sew-ins, feed-in braids and goddess faux locs. While my hair was growing out, I tried my best not to cut it and let it even out before I got a haircut.
To kick off 2019, I decided it was time for quick switch up. I was referred to the Curl Whisperer, April Kayganich, a hairstylist based in Austin at the Honeycomb Hair Boutique who is known to give curls life and she did not disappoint. Not only did she reshape my hair, but she gave me the most gorgeous curls, so it was only right that I share the curly love. Keep reading to find out her cutting technique and curly girl tips to get defined voluminous curls.
Curl by Curl Cutting Technique
“I almost always start on dry hair when cutting curls. I started in the back of your head and made slight diagonal sections on the left and right side and followed those lines cutting curl by curl. I continued this moving up the head and moved to each side of your head in the front to connect the shape. Curls tend to shrink when a lot of length is removed, so I am pretty conservative when it comes to removing length before the Cleansing and styling portion of the appointment. I do a lot of dry cutting after the hair is styled as well and that’s when I went in and visually balanced the shape in the front using a freehand technique.”

Wash & Style
“Curly hair needs moisture, so I used my go to cleanser which is New Wash Rich. It isn’t shampoo, but you don’t need to condition afterwards which is pretty cool, but it works with your natural oils to cleanse and condition the hair without stripping anything away from your hair. I made sure your hair was really wet and applied a generous amount of New Wash on the ends and then massaged what little bit was left on my hands into your scalp. I then detangled with a wide tooth comb and rinsed the product from your hair thoroughly. After words, I used clips to work in sections adding more water to your hair and then applying Skimdo from root to tip using a raking motion. The curls around your hairline needed some love, so I did a cold rinse to reduce the frizz, applied a small amount of Skimdo and finger coiled those curls. We then put you under the hood dryer for 15 minutes, which is almost like air drying, then diffused your curls so we could achieve more volume.”
How to Prepare for a Curly Cut and What NOT To Do
- Come to the appointment with your hair down, dry and detangled with little product in it. I don’t mean having it in a bun or a slick backed pony then taking it down, but down so your stylist can see how many curl patterns you have, how your curls fall and how you normally style it. That helps us know how to style your curls when we get to the end of your appointment. I also like to mention that when I say detangled, I just mean having “fresh” hair. I prefer for my clients to have washed their hair within the last 1-3 days of the haircut so that way it saves on the amount of time the haircut can take. Some stylists charge by the amount of time in the chair or add a detangling fee so make sure to ask beforehand so you can prepare!
- Bring photos of shapes and lengths you like that are similar to your curl pattern and hair density. A lot of people come in asking for volume and will bring photos of someone who has a lot more hair than they do or a different curl pattern. Volume is not only determined by layers, but also by your hair density which can vary on different parts of the head.
- My only don’t is: Don’t be late!! Make sure to give yourself enough time to get to your appointment and to find the salon. That way you can have a little extra time to consult with your stylist to make sure you feel comfortable.

Retaining Moisture
“Moisture comes from water-not oils and butters! Water is key and I can’t stress it enough. Make sure your hair is soaking wet when you apply your products.”
Keys to Maximum Volume
“First, make sure you have a haircut that is either layered to give more volume or layers that are graduated to build weight. Second, use products appropriate for your texture and curl type! For example: if you have fine hair that is a looser curl, don’t use a thick cream, look for foaming mousse or things like spray gel. Diffusing is key if you want instant volume and make sure to start off with your head upside down. You can also set your hair at the roots with double prong clips or Deva Clips if you have them! You insert the clips at a 45 degree angle to your scalp and you can air dry this way.”

This summer has been filled with endless adventures, exploring new places and trying fun hairstyles. One of my most memorable experiences was visiting Chicago to attend Lollapalooza, one of the biggest music festivals in the world that features the top musical styles ranging from EDM to hip-hop.
Bed Head by TIGI hosted an epic hotel party at the Bed Head Hotel — an exclusive pop-up party for festival goers to sip on refreshing cocktails, get glam and enjoy good vibes by guest DJs. The two-day activation brought out artists and beauty influencers including Sabrina Claudio, Brittany Sky, and Madison Beer. Not to mention some of the best female DJs were spinning the hottest tunes, including Caroline D’Amore and Dani Thorne.
Every music festival has its own personality. Lollapalooza is the perfect blend of boho meets 90s’ street style. Festival style is always a hot topic and one hairstyle that was everywhere were space buns. You could spot people wearing them sleek, curly, braided — and sometimes doused with glitter at the roots. Some pulled up all their hair up into the twists, while others let half of it flow freely.
Being that this was my first time at Lollapalooza, it was only right I joined in on the festival fun. Kimberly Michelle, TIGI stylist and educator, styled my hair using Screw It, a curl hydrating jelly oil that adds moisture, and Get Twisted, the anti-frizz hairspray that fights humidity to combat frizz for up to 72 hours. Being that space buns are a classic festival style, I chose to go with that style and added some flair by incorporating a braid down the center and also some intricate accessories.
Kimberly Michelle truly made my Sporty Spice dreams come true. She even spilled the tea on pro tips to preserve my style while at the festival and the top curly girl tip to avoid dry hair. Check out our candid conversation below and let me know what you think of my festival style.
What I love most about festivals is that you can meet people from all over the globe who connect about music, art, and fashion. I had the opportunity to meet so many curlfriends and women conquering the music industry, such as Caroline D’Amore. She performed one of my favorite DJ sets, and she rocked a fierce festival hairstyle that stole the show. Watch our interview below along with other curly girls sharing their top tips and what their natural hair represents.
The TIGI stylists offered attendees complimentary hairstyles specializing in boho braids, twisted topknots, and bold textures. It’s no secret that texture is at the forefront of the beauty industry and will only continue to lead the way as more women embrace their natural texture.
The TIGI team did an amazing job styling attendees’ hair and I was curious to know their inspiration for these creative hairstyles. Each unique hairstyle was created with some of Bed Head’s top-selling stylers. A festival essential? Oh Bee Hive — a dry shampoo that adds texture and volume, but also absorbs excess oils and refreshes hair after dancing all day and night at the festival. I caught up with a few TIGI stylists to learn how to create each style. Hear more from the stylists and how to recreate these looks below.
Thank you, TIGI, for inviting me to hang out at the Bed Head Hotel and Lollapalooza for an unforgettable experience.

History has been made!
In the latest issue of Vogue Beyonce graces the cover and gets realer than she ever has before. In its 125-year history, Vogue has never before featured the work of an African American photographer on the cover – until now. Beyonce had complete creative control to share her truth in this issue and she chose Tyler Mitchell to shoot the cover. Rather than rocking wigs, hair extensions and glamorous make-up, she appears in the issue wearing her natural hair and little to no make-up. “I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies. That’s why I stripped away the wigs and hair extensions and used little makeup for this shoot.”
I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies. That’s why I stripped away the wigs and hair extensions and used little makeup for this shoot.
She opens up about her life, her body, and her heritage in her own words and we’re so here for this celebratory moment of honesty.
The superstar, the creative genius, the wife, the mother, the woman. The 36-year-old singer wears many hats and while she receives countless amounts of recognition for all that she does and excels in, underneath it all is a woman, a real woman, with hopes that transcend music.
Recently, she was ridiculed and questioned about wearing her natural hair and her hair stylist, Neal Farinah, has officially confirmed it’s all natural. “So many times one is judged by their hair texture or skin color. I’m so proud and honored to have been a part of such an amazing shoot, braiding the queens all natural curly hair!”
On Representation & Legacy
Not only is Beyonce using her platform to inspire millions and create black excellence, but she’s opening doors for the ones to come by providing them with opportunities to be recoginzed for their talent. “It’s important to me that I help open doors for younger artists. There are so many cultural and societal barriers to entry that I like to do what I can to level the playing field, to present a different point of view for people who may feel like their voices don’t matter.”
“If people in powerful positions continue to hire and cast only people who look like them, sound like them, come from the same neighborhoods they grew up in, they will never have a greater understanding of experiences different from their own. They will hire the same models, curate the same art, cast the same actors over and over again, and we will all lose. The beauty of social media is it’s completely democratic. Everyone has a say. Everyone’s voice counts, and everyone has a chance to paint the world from their own perspective.”
“ I look at the woman I was in my 20s and I see a young lady growing into confidence but intent on pleasing everyone around her. I now feel so much more beautiful, so much sexier, so much more interesting. And so much more powerful.”

We are still breaking barriers. We are still curating culture. We are still opening doors for those who come behind us and honoring their legacy. We are actively using our platforms to empower others and create space for diversity, representation, inclusivity and social change. This moment is a huge milestone for our culture and it’s amazing to witness how Beyonce is using her power to shine a light on young creatives and changing the narrative around on how black women are perceived in media.

It never fails that I walk into a store and my eye immediately gravitates to the neutral tones. No matter how old I get some things never change. Although I’m open to playing with prints you’ll usually see me in a solid color (usually white, black, creme or gray”> styled with minimal accessories. Speaking of accessories, these cute little colorful tassel earrings are the perfect accessory for any basic look.
It was a no brainer that I grabbed this mocha jumpsuit, it had my name written all over it! I love a good jumpsuit. Seriously, I have like 6 in my closet because they’re so easy and comfortable. I’ve spent countless mornings staring at my closet wondering what outfit to wear and jumpsuits solve all my problems because it’s a one & done look that requires minimum effort.
Living in Texas it’s essential to wear light-weight clothing during the Summer because we can have weeks of scorching hot days of 100 degrees or more. That is definitely one of the reasons I love this jumpsuit because of the breathable fabric, plus the romantic side tie, not to mention it has pockets!
Even though I love fashion, I try my best to be realistic and reasonable when shopping. I’ll ask myself questions such as “Where will you wear I this? Is it worth it? Do you love it?
Even though I love fashion, I try my best to be realistic and reasonable when shopping. I’ll ask myself questions such as “Where will I wear this? Is it worth it? Do I love it?” I’ve learned that if you don’t love it in the dressing room, you most likely won’t wear it. So try everything on and ask yourself those same questions when you’re shopping, believe me, it saves you lots of time and money.
Lately, I’ve been obsessed with using the finger coil technique to create defined curls. It’s super quick and easy and is great for any curl girl. Being that it’s extremely hot and humid in Texas majority of the year, it’s essential that I keep my hair moisturized with heavy butters to fight the frizz.
Since I’m growing my hair out, it’s been a great way to blend in my longer curls and keep my short cut looking fresh. I usually wash my hair the night before and coil it while it’s damp, then let it air dry overnight. Once my hair is dry I unravel the coils, then pick my root to add some volume and definition.
Here’s what I use:
- DETANGLER/LEAVE-IN: Kinky Curly Knot Today
- STYLER: ORS Styling Smoothie
- VOLUMIZER: Pick
Since I prefer to wear neutral tones, it was a must for me to add a pop of color with my accessories. Pom poms are one of Summer’s hottest trends and when I saw these sandals I knew I could wear them with multiple outfits since it has so many colors and I knew it would be a good investment.
One of my fashion rules is buy clothing that is transitional and can be worn on a variety occasions. This look is a great example of taking your look from desk to dinner effortlessly. If you love my look as much as I do you can get my jumpsuit and earrings from BeeHive and my sandals are from Target.

Image: Maureen Nicol founder and director of Campstory
Growing up as a first-generation Sierra Leonean-American, Maureen Nicol wanted to pay homage to her mother country in a meaningful way to empower generations to come by creating an educational and creative experience for children. She incorporated her passion for teaching and community organizing to create Camp Story, a summer camp which aims to strengthen the wings of young storytellers socially, emotionally, and artistically specifically low income and marginalized youth.
Maureen is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Texas at Austin studying Early Childhood Education. After teaching for several years, she noticed the power that the arts has on young children especially when it comes to identity, critical thinking, inquiry and building community. With the belief that all children should have the opportunity to have meaningful artistic experiences and the resources to tell their stories in the way they believe best, Camp Story was born.
“I created this to pay homage because that’s where my family is from and I know these children wouldn’t have this opportunity any other way. I show up for the people whom I feel need it most because I feel like I’m extensions of them.” – Maureen Nicol, founder and director of Camp Story
Image: @campstory
Maureen’s number one goal is to create a space where she is allowing youth to express themselves, their learning, and stories in a safe and creative environment. One of her most significant challenges, like most businesses, has been accessing capital, but that hasn’t stopped her from taking risks and following her passion. “Money and fundraising was definitely a challenge. Let’s be honest, money is always an issue. You may have a great idea, but if you don’t have the access to capital it’s hard to make it sustainable. The first time we hosted Camp Story, we made it work on a $3,000 budget and served 45 kids from ages 5 – 15 years old. Not only was it an opportunity for children to express themselves, but it also served as an opportunity for professional development for the teachers to collaborate to help create this memorable experience.
Image: @williethewayfarer
Maureen is known as the risk taker in her family and believes that regardless if you fail or succeed, there’s always a lesson learned. “The reason I have the confidence to take risks is because I started off with one risk and it didn’t let me down. It showed me that if I listen to my intuition and act on it, even though other people may not believe in it or trust it, I have faith in myself. You have to take risks in order to progress. No one who is comfortable and complacent will grow, so I see it as, I take a risk and I fail, or I take a risk and I do well. Either way, I’m winning because I learned something new.”
Image: Jessica Nicol founder of Daffina
Growing up as a middle child with two other sisters she values sisterhood and credits her oldest sister, Jessica Nicol, as her mentor who instilled three key values in her since a young girl. “Family, service and education definitely come to mind when it comes to things we cherish in our family. I take my role as the big sister very seriously and early on encouraged Maureen to follow her passion of teaching and serving others. Our parents taught us that helping others in need is priority. It’s important to identify issues that impact communities and do what you can to develop solutions.”
Jessica is a government consultant and the founder of Daffina African Clothing, which is a family owned business inspired by the love of African fashion to capture the beauty and history of their motherland. Jessica says that she is beyond proud of the work Maureen is doing with Camp Story and was grateful she was able to witness her in action last Summer when the entire family visited Sierra Leone for the first time in 20 years. “To see her in her element interacting with the teachers and students, I was very proud. She did an exceptional job planning and providing instructions to the staff in developing creative programs for the children. Though it was hosted in Sierra Leone, she partnered with the International School and there were children from all over the world that were impacted.”

Hey, NaturallyCurly world!
I’m Alexandra, one of the NaturallyCurly editors. I have a mix of Type 3b/3c curls, with medium porosity. I big chopped three-years ago and it has been an eye-opening journey learning how to care for my hair in its natural state. One change that has helped my hair become healthier and longer is creating a scalp care routine, it’s truly the foundation for healthy hair. I’ve seen so much growth over the past 6 months from implementing this. I wash my hair about twice a week and use scalp care products every other week, depending on how much build-up I’m experiencing. Here’s what I use to wash, style and refresh to get defined, bouncy and moisturized curls. Don’t forget to watch the video at the end for a step-by-step tutorial. Let’s get to it!
Wash Routine
Step 1: Shampoo with Camille Rose Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse
This is a great moisturizing shampoo that keeps my scalp clean without leaving my hair stripped. Not to mention it smells amazing!
Step 2: Condition with Innersense Hydrating Cream Conditioner
Like most curlies, a creamy conditioner is key and this is one of my favorites! I love how soft and defined this conditioner leaves my curls. I detangle my hair with the Curly Hair Solutions Flexy Brush and it’s great to use to clump curls.
Step 3: Towel dry hair with the Hair Remedie Frizz Eliminating Towel
For the longest, I didn’t think it was a big deal to use a microfiber towel to dry my hair until I did it! By using a microfiber towel it helps absorb a ton of excess water from freshly washed hair, eliminates frizz, and enhances natural curl definition.
Step 4: Apply a few drops of Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment
This scalp treatment is great to use after I wash my hair. I apply a few drops to my scalp to restore the balance and hydration in my scalp. It has a cooling sensation and it good to keep on hand to soothe my scalp when it’s itchy or irritated in between washes.
Styling Routine
Step 5: Rake through Design Essentials Almond & Avocado Curl Enhancing Mousse
Like you, I grew up hearing that mousses and gels leave hair crunchy and flaky, so I didn’t use either until recently and it has done wonders for adding hold and definition. This mousse is my absolute favorite because it controls frizz, especially in the humid months, adds shine and leaves my curls so bouncy.
Step 6: Apply the Aunt Jackies Curls & Coils Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel
Not only does this gel add definition to my hair, it’s packed with nourishing oils so it leaves my hair soft and moisturized. I rake this gel through my hair, then finger coil a few pieces in the front to add extra definition. If you’re not sure how to finger coil, watch the video below.
Step 7: Finish with the Ouidad Mongongo Oil
This is my secret weapon, yall! This multi-purpose oil is a what I use after I undo my finger coils. It’s the perfect lightweight, finishing oil that adds shine and controls frizz.
Refresh
Step 8: Curly Hair Solutions H20 Water Bottle
This mist water bottle is everything! I use it to refresh my curls in the morning and it is truly a must-have for curlies.
Step 9: Apply the SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Oil Leave-in
When my hair is really dry and in need of some TLC, this is my go-to! It’s a 2-in-1 detangler and leave-in conditioner that can be used to refresh and rehydrate day 3 or 4 curls.
Step 10: Fluff with a pick or the Spriggle
I don’t leave home without my pick. Whenever I’m in need of some extra volume or want to refresh my curls throughout the day, the spriggle always keeps my curls fluffy.

Tell us about your hair journey. . .
My hair was about four times as thick and coarse when I was a child as it is now. As a child, I had somewhat of a mullet helmet, and as it grew longer it became a giant mass of hair. I can remember relatives always telling me to put my hair up because I looked like a witch, and I remember always breaking hair ties because my hair was too thick to tie up. Needless to say, I spent years wishing in vain that my hair looked like the girls and women on TV and in magazines. Middle school was a time spent trying and failing, to straighten my hair with Velcro curlers and weak curling irons. That’s when I cut it short in an attempt to get the “Rachel,” I was so disappointed when my hair ended up looking nothing like Jennifer Aniston’s, and I didn’t understand why (hello hair type”>. This was also the era of Sun In, ouch.
In high-school, I discovered Infusium, which finally gave me the curl definition I had been missing all my life. It became my Holy Grail. I would put a towel over my shoulders and then douse my wet hair with Infusium, then air dry. Unfortunately, I still wasn’t satisfied and I was getting relaxers which the salons promised would straighten my hair, but never did. In college, I had my hair relaxed at a Filipino salon that finally did the trick. I’m sad to say that permanently banished my curls, and it took years to transition that straight hair out.
What made you decide to embrace your natural hair texture?
I’ve seen my hair mostly as an element of my style – at some points in my life I’ve preferred it straight, sometimes I’ve liked it curly. Sometimes long, short, blonde, purple. Ever since I realized how incredibly difficult it is to go from straight or colored back to curly, I’ve pretty much stuck to wearing it natural.
What has been the most memorable moment of your hair journey?
Cutting it all off! I had hair down to my belly button, it was wavy, balayage, and people loved it that way. When I cut it off into a pixie there were a lot of people who couldn’t understand why I would do that. They warned me that I was going to cry and miss my long hair, but I never did. I think before I cut my hair I had a lot of fear and what ifs – what if I’m not pretty without long hair? What if my hair gets damaged and won’t curl? What if I can’t pull off short hair the way bolder women can? Cutting my hair freed me from all of that.
What was your transitioning hair regimen?
To be honest it was a bit hopeless. I would wear my hair in a ponytail to hide the grow out, or I would straighten the roots to make them match the ends. When I bleached my hair blonde I had to transition that damage out. The bleach destroyed my hair, and eventually I was ready to cut it off. The curls that were left behind after my cut were the healthiest they’ve ever been!
What is your current hair regimen? Any favorite products you’d like to share?
My regimen is all about making my waves last as many days as possible without washing. On day 1 I cleanse, condition, and put a light styler in my hair. A few favorites for cleansing and conditioning are Elucence, DevaCurl’s Delight line, 2 Girls with Curls (the lavender smells so good”>. My favorite stylers right now are Kevin Murphy Killer Curls, Jessicurl Spiralicious, Camille Rose Aloe Whipped Butter Gel, and Everyone’s Style Hair Gel. My Holy Grail refresher is the Curl Keeper water bottle, which I use every morning to refresh my hair. With my waves, sleeping on them, pulling them back or up pretty much makes them straighten out, that’s why it’s essential for my refresh regimen to be on point. I wet my hair with the water bottle, then take a small amount of styler and rub my hands together until they’re coated with styler, then I scrunch my hair to encourage the curl. If I have time I air dry, but if my hair needs to be dry before I leave the house then I diffuse. The difference in my hair before and after this quick routine is like night and day.
Any advice you’d like to give other women who may be in the transition phase and need some encouragement?
Find ways to enjoy the challenges. When I was growing my hair out I dyed it platinum blonde, then when I got tired of dealing with the damage I chopped it into a short bob. Yes, of course, there were frustrating times, but when I look back on it I think of all of the fun I had expressing myself in those stages of my life.

I met Gabrielle Deculus a few years ago during SXSW and we’ve stay connected ever since. I would be doing you a disservice if I tried to put her in one category because she wears many hats flawlessly. She’s a businesswoman, visionary, philanthropist, and changemaker who is empowering women and serving others in need. Dedicated to her community, the Louisiana native recently led recovery efforts in response to devastating floods, mobilizing the public while raising over $30K in the process; a feat that later earned her the “Hometown Hero Award” courtesy of Beyonce and Essence Magazine. She’s the founder of Business Rules for Women, who has created a thriving digital media platform for emerging entrepreneurs and ambitious businesswomen; using a diverse network of contributors to share unique tools and resources to an audience of over 190K success-driven women online.
I had the opportunity to speak with her and her mentor, her mother, Ramona Deculus. Ramona is a business coach, entrepreneur and motivational speaker that prides herself on being her kids biggest fans. Being that family morals play such a important role in her life, we first chatted about her family and the values they instilled in Gabrielle early on. Her mother shared, “My parents instilled these things into me and these were transferred to my children. The first thing is integrity. It’s not about doing the right thing, but doing the right thing when noone is watching and holding them accountable. The next thing is work ethic. My parents still to this day, my dad is 81 and my mom is 73, they continue to serve others. That is what keeps them young and going – waking up to help others. The third thing is to be a person of your word. If you tell someone you’re going to show up, you show up – on time.” She continued on and said that, “Time is money and you shouldn’t waste anybody else’s money or time.”
Image: @gabrielledeculus
Being that her mom plays such an intricate role in her life I was curious to know how she encouraged Gabrielle to follow her dreams and find her purpose when she was younger. “I never encouraged my kids to do one thing in particular, instead I encouraged them to find their passion. My grandfather told me as a young girl, that if you do something that you love to do, you can make as much money as you want, but if do something for the money you’ll never be happy.” She said from that moment, that stuck with her and she passed that lesson onto her children.
As a teenage girl, Gabrielle was interested in being a part of an organization so she joined the Junior Knights of Peter Claver. Her mom explained that, “Being apart of that organization really inspired her to help others and she lit up anytime she had a chance to do community service. It didn’t surprise me when she chose a career that gave her that same type of energy, excitement and passion to serve others.”
“The seeds that you plant early in life, you water and nurture them and they will show up in places that you don’t expect them to.” – Ramona Deculus, mentor and business coach
It’s no doubt that finding your purpose is truly a journey and everyone finds that at different moments throughout their lives. Gabrielle found hers in college and has hit the ground running ever since. “My teenage years gave me some idea of what I enjoyed, but when I got to college I met a group of friends, who are all business owners and entrepreneurs now, that wanted to create events for our peers because we didn’t like the events that were being held in Louisiana. I realized from that point on that I liked being in a position of being the problem solver, the innovator or the creator of giving people what they need.
Image: @gabrielledeculus
After that moment of being in college and starting my first company and realizing that people are actually coming to me to help them with their ideas, business plans and marketing ideas – way before I was ready because I put myself out there. That showed me that they saw the spirit in me where I can help them get things done and get that stamp of approval and love from my peers that I appreciate.”
“If you answer the needs of the people you will always have a job.” – Gabrielle Deculus, founder of Business Rules for Women
Being a business owner comes with challenges and regardless of what you’re taught in school somethings you just don’t read in the books; you have to find out through trial and error and adjust as you go. I was curious to know how Gabrielle has overcome obstacles in her career and what was a tool(s”> that helped her improve her skills. She most definitely put it into perspective and reminded me the importance of being intentional in all that you do. “Being that I have a problem solver attitude, I don’t look at things as setbacks, but opportunities. Language is very important to me and I look at challenges as opportunities to get better and improve. I’ve had plenty of challenges and I would say one of them was figuring out how to balance multiple projects. When I was in business school I was taught how to run a business for someone else, but not for myself, so that was a learning curve for me. Years later, I was introduced to basecamp and found that there are tools out there that can help me manage projects and serve my clients efficiently.”
There’s no doubt that in order to be successful, you must believe in yourself and be confident in your craft because if you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect someone else to? Gabrielle shares how her family, especially her mother, instilled confidence in her at an early age and that has played a huge role in being the businesswoman she is today. “Confidence was something I learned early on. Of course you have your small doubts and insecurities, but I never felt like I was less than the next person. My peers, my family and my purpose really helped me navigate things. I saw my mom leave Louisiana being somebody’s staff member to owning her own insurance agency, which was huge for me. Seeing her putting in work, building a home for her parents and giving people what they need to build their legacy and keep people safe in case something goes wrong.”
Image: @gabrielledeculus
Her mom modestly responded, “It takes a lot of hard work to do what I do, but I enjoy it. I learned early on that to whom much is given, much is required. Once you know better, you do better. When you have somebody who can lay a roadmap in front of you, it’s a lot easier for you to lay a roadmap for yourself. It gives you confidence and instills pride in what you’re doing and a feeling of accomplishment when you see the result of the fruits of your labor. I’m very proud of the work that Gabrielle has done and I know one day she’s going to build me that house. Family matters and supporting each other is important to us. We take pride in that.”
I couldn’t end this conversation without asking Gabrielle her #1 rule for businesswomen, “Invest in yourself. I tell this to everyone, what are you doing to become a better person? What are you doing to make your business better? What are you doing to make yourself more competitive? What are you doing to grow?
Image: @gabrielledeculus
We spend a lot of time and money on things that don’t help us in those categories. The moment that you start budgeting time and money into yourself, whether it’s going to therapy, getting a business coach, getting a trainer and being conscious of your nutrition. I feel like if you invest in yourself, it’s more likely that opportunities will come your way and that other people and businesses will invest in you.”Thank you again to Gabrielle and Ramona Deculus for sharing your wisdom, time and experiences with us. I admire all the work you’re both doing and appreciate you for reminding us the power of mentorship, family values and serving with a purpose.

Our Pinterest feed is full of gorgeous hairstyles, and one style that we’ve been eager to try is the waterfall braid. Before you talk yourself out of it and continue to rock your everyday ponytail, trust us it’s not as hard as it looks. We teamed up with Brooke Michie, hairstylist at Lyric Salon, to share a step-by-step tutorial to achieve a whimsical waterfall braid.
But First Let’s Talk Products . . .
As usual, it’s important to start with clean hair. Grab, the Moisture Replenishing Shampoo to gently cleanse your hair and restore your natural oils. Once you rinse out the shampoo, now it’s time to apply the Daily Strengthening Conditioner to moisturize your hair packed with protein and coconut oil that will make your hair healthier, stronger and softer.
If your curls are in need of some extra TLC, we got you covered! Once you have rinsed out the conditioner and towel dried your hair, apply the Keratin Intensive Repair Masque section by section covering your hair from root to tip. For best results, cover your hair with a shower cap or a plastic bag and let the masque sit for 10 minutes and then rinse it out.
It’s cocktail time!
To give your waves and curls some definition, grab a water bottle and the Curl Control Leave-in Conditioner. Squeeze a small amount of the leave-in conditioner into the water bottle, shake and spray your hair until it’s damp.
Get the Look
Now, that your hair is clean and conditioned for greatness, it’s time for the real fun!
Take three strands of hair near your temple as you would a normal braid. The piece higher up closer to the part line is section one and the hair in the middle that you’re crossing over is section two and then section three comes up to cross over the tail of section one.
Repeat this process, adding in hair like a French Braid to section one again and then letting it drop over section two. Collect hair from the section near/beneath the dropped hair to be the new section three that comes up and over the dropped piece like a stitch to keep it in place and start the braid again.
Continue this process until the braid is wrapped around your head.
Tip: Direct the braid downward toward the nape if you want the braid to have a curved, low-slung shape.
For a regal crowned style, repeat that process beneath the first braid with dropped sections included in the new braid for a fuller, lacier or more textural effect. Then, secure the braid with a bobby pin. Accessories are a great way to jazz up your style, feel free to add more pins and clips for a fun adorned look. You’ll thank us later!
Now, that’s not so hard right?

It’s all about “Moisture, moisture, moisture!”??♀️
Recently, I noticed that I needed to switch up my styling products from heavy creams to gels because they were weighing my hair down and not giving me the curl definition I was looking for. Eco Style is known for creating some of the most trustworthy gels out that not only keep your baby hairs laid, but curls defined and frizz free so I had to see what the hype was about. They sent me a special gift to try, and I can’t wait to spill the tea about their latest 2-in-1 product that has everyone buzzing!
All I can say is . . . The hype is real.
Eco Style continues to update their famed styling gel, and they just released their most innovative product, yet: A gel that is half conditioning treatment, half styling product packed with four key ingredients that your curls will love including flaxseed, olive oil, shea butter, and black castor oil.
Here’s why these ingredients are so essential for hair health:
- Flaxseed provides the strong hold without the crunch plus adds shine and curl definition.
- Olive oil is known to seal, coat and penetrate the hair to prevent moisture loss and combat frizz.
- Shea butter is an essential ingredient for most curlies because it’s a natural moisturizer and provides protection against heat and UV rays.
- Black castor oil strengthens, thickens and increases hair growth.
What I liked most about this gel is that it left my hair feeling so soft, defined and moisturized! Let’s be honest gels have a bad reputation for making hair feel crunchy, flaky and dry and that’s because they’re usually filled with alcohol and synthetic polymers that lead to product build up. That is certainly not the case with this product since it’s packed with the top natural ingredients it’s not only styling your hair but moisturizing it as well.
In addition to the Eco Style Gold Gel leaving my curls poppin’ this gel stood out to me because it moisturizes your scalp and increases hair growth which is extremely important to me as I grow out my hair. Plus, the hold and shine are on 10 and it’s literally everything your hair needs in one jar.
Is gel a part of your styling routine?
Let us know if you’ll be trying out the Eco Style Gold Gel in the comments below.

Don’t get me wrong, I love rockin’ my short, natural, 3b/3c curls, but I also enjoy switching up my naturally curly hair with protective styles. I mean versatility is key right? Especially since I’m growing out my pixie cut, it can be challenging finding hairstyles that work for my hair during this in-between phase and honestly wearing my hair the same way every day gets old, really fast. To add some length and volume to my hair, I tried the Bounce Beach Wave hair extensions and here’s how I kept them fresh and fabulous while protecting my natural hair. insert hair flip here*
Ways to Style Hair
In order to protect my natural hair, I got a versatile sew-in by my stylist, Tara. She braided my hair where I can wear a part down the middle, side part, and ponytail. Since the hair extensions were a loose wave, I applied heat to my hair about every 4 days to blend my natural hair seamlessly. To be sure I didn’t get any heat damage I used my go-to heat protectant before applying heat. Ultimately, I chose to get hair extensions to help my hair grow, so it was very important for me to be mindful of how much heat I applied and keep my styling as low maintenance as possible. When I didn’t have much time I would refresh my hair with water and a styling cream and wear it wavy. When I wanted a more defined look, I would wand my hair or pin curl it and seal it with a light-weight oil, which was great because both of these styles held a curl pretty good where I didn’t have to curl my extensions daily.
Tip: The more heat you apply the looser the curl gets, so try your best to use heatless options such as flexi rods or pin curls when possible.

Wash Day Essentials
I’ve learned that the better you take care of your hair extensions, the more opportunity you have in reusing them for a future style, especially if you invest in quality, human hair. As I said I tried my best to apply heat only every 4 days or so and would wash my scalp and hair extensions weekly. Since I exercise frequently, it was essential for me to cleanse my scalp weekly because the wave itch was something serious. If you’re not sweating much or not experiencing an itchy scalp you can wash every other week. I wore my extensions for 6 weeks and here’s my wash routine that saved my scalp. I never realized the importance of oiling my scalp until I started getting protective styles. Not only is it important to keep a clean scalp, but it’s also important to wash and deep condition the hair extensions just as you would your natural hair. While wearing a sew-in, I followed my normal wash routine of a conditioner followed by deep conditioner. I noticed each time I deep conditioned the hair extensions were softer than before with even more bounce. After each wash and daily I used this scalp oil not only would it soothe the itching but it also is great for hair growth.
Tip: Treat your extensions as you would your natural hair and wash them regularly.
