For the last few weeks, I’ve been in pursuit of a new moisturizer that can handle my thirsty type 4 hair. And while yes, dryness is something I deal with on the regular, the cold, dry November air moving in on the east coast has made my coils a bit unpredictable lately.
Fortunately for me, my mother, a newly-transitioned natural, has been trying out a hoard of new products, and I’ve been sampling (sneaking”> them in hopes of stumbling upon some star products that I might have overlooked. While sifting through her moisturizer stash, I came across a gem: Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk.
Camille Rose Naturals is a beauty brand founded by mother, vegan, and former therapist Janell Stephens. Parenting children who suffer from sensitive skin, Janell was inspired to create her own skin and hair products with wholesome, organic ingredients which eventually became the brand the natural community adores today. While I’m familiar with the Camille Rose Naturals hair care line, I’ve never tried any of the products until now, but this leave-in is ultra hydrating and type 4 friendly.
Featured Organic Ingredients
Like every good leave-in, this one brings out the heavy-hitters for maximum moisture. The Moisture Milk is water-based with a blend of top quality natural oils and ingredients, including avocado seed oil, castor seed oil, macadamia nut oil, green tea leaf, rice milk, and others. Castor oil, avocado oil, and macadamia nut oil are all antioxidant-rich oils that promote moisture and encourage definition. Rice milk is thought to promote hair growth and contains a great slip for detangling.
First Impressions
Immediately after squeezing the product out of the bottle and noticing the lotion-like consistency, the next thing I was aware of was the sweet cupcake smell—which, surprisingly, I thoroughly enjoyed! What’s even better is that it’s not sickly or overpowering when it’s been applied to your hair. Although the scent is light, naturals who don’t appreciate fragrances or who use many different products in their routine may not approve.
Always a skeptic of light consistency products, initially I was unsure if the product would be able to coat my strands enough to moisturize my hair, but not only does the Moisture Milk hydrate, it defines curls/coils and makes for easier detangling. A true all-around moisturizer if I’ve ever seen one (and I’ve seen many“>.
My Routine With The Moisture Milk
My daily routine consists of a leave-in, oil, and pomade using the LOC method. Swapping my previous leave-in for the Moisture Milk, I separate my hair into four even sections, spray my hair with water until it’s consistently damp throughout, and add about a dime-sized amount for each section, starting from the ends to the roots.
I follow up the leave-in with Jamaican black castor oil, and then finally Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey Pomade, detangling as-needed with a vented detangling brush. Afterwards, I style as usual. For twist-outs, I moisturize small sections of hair the same way, and then twist. When combining products, be sure to take your hair density and porosity into account—you may want to combine the Moisture Milk with lighter products.
Final Thoughts
I would recommend this leave-in to curly and coily hair types looking to amp up their moisturizing routine this winter. It’s perfect for daily moisturizing and definition, and blends well with other products due to its light consistency. The only slight gripe I have is that the 8 ounce bottle doesn’t seem to last long when used for daily moisturizing.
