I’ve been natural 10 years. Wow, I can’t believe that it has been so long. My natural hair journey was definitely a JOURNEY. I learned a lot about my hair, the best products to use, and the best styles that worked for me. On May 3, 2019 I decided to loc my hair.
The first question I always get is “why did you decide to loc your hair?” My loc journey is a very personal journey, as it also is for other people. I decided to loc my hair because I needed a change, I needed a drastic change in my life to elevate higher. My spirit needed it, I needed it, I knew it was time. I always tell people, you will know when you are ready to loc your hair. It’s a feeling that you get that is unexplainable. I’ve discovered so much about myself since starting my loc journey.
Loc Inspirations
When I began my loc journey I found two women (@valeriecradd and @biancajean.locs“> on social media who were an inspiration for my loc journey. They both started their locs with the two strand twist method, which is the method I chose for my journey.
The Top Resources For Your Loc Journey
When I decided I wanted to loc my hair, of course, the first thing I did was Google. My husband has been loc’d 10 years so I also got some advice from him. I knew that I didn’t want to cut all of my hair off to start so I began to search the many different ways to start locs. I came across the two strand twist method. I never knew that you could start locs with two strand twists. This method appealed to me because my hair would be in a “style”. Most people don’t even know that I am locing my hair until I tell them. My hair is in mini twists that will eventually completely loc.
There are many ways to loc your hair so don’t feel pressured to just starting your locs one specific way. When I was researching I found many techniques to start locs that included:
- Two Strand Twist Method
- Comb Coils
- Braids
- Interlocking
- Free Form
- Loc extensions
Growth Process
Everyone’s growth process will be different. This is something that you will need to keep in mind. It’s super easy to look at other peoples locs and say I want mine to be like that. You may think your hair is not growing or doing anything but trust me it is. Make sure to take pictures throughout your journey so that you can compare.

Top Products For Locs
In the beginning I didn’t really use anything on my locs. I quickly learned that I needed to treat my scalp and also moisturize my hair. Just like natural hair, you also need to keep your locs moisturized. I use Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Oil on my scalp. My scalp is always super dry and this oil helps to relieve itching and also helps with my dandruff. As for moisture, I use aloe vera juice mixed with water to just spritz on my hair before bedtime. I also sleep with a satin scarf and bonnet to protect my locs at night. Yep, that’s right, you need to protect your locs too!
My Advice For Anyone Starting Their Loc Journey
This loc journey really has showed me patience. It’s a little different from my loose natural journey because you really dont see results for quite some time. You learn how patient you are. One piece of advice I everyone’s journey is unique. Look to others for inspiration but know that your journey will be unique to you and your hair will not be exactly as someone else’s.
