I remember Sunday nights in the kitchen when mother would blow-dry and two-strand twist my hair until the next wash day 2-3 weeks later. When it comes to children with textured hair, having stretched, protective styles are always easier to manage in comparison to loose styles like twist outs and wash and go’s. Twisting wet hair gives you the plush, glossy twists we all love, but they are usually prone to frizz relatively quickly, especially since children tend to be active and shrunken twists are not as easy to manipulate into other styles. Stretching the hair whether it be via heat, banding, or braiding makes managing two or more heads of textured hair (i.e. yourself and your child or children”>, especially Type 4, is much easier.

What You’ll Need
- Leave-in conditioner and/or heat protectant
- Butterfly hair clamps
- Blow-dryer with comb attachment
- Wide tooth comb
- Snacks
- Movie
- Start on freshly-washed hair and divide the hair into small sections with clamps.
- Detangle the hair with a wide tooth comb starting from the ends and working up to the roots.
- Blow-dry the hair on low-medium heat with high air speed in sections.
- Twist or braid the hair in four sections to maintain the stretch and prevent tangling overnight.
- Cover with a satin scarf or satin bonnet.
