Our favorite writer, girl next door, awkward Auntie, owner of Thursdays, Shondaland developer, and storytelling powerhouse, Shonda Rhimes, is leaving ABC for Netflix, according to several media outlets.
So what happens now?
Shonda, producer and creator of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “How To Get Away with Murder,” and “Scandal” which currently stream on Netflix now, and also author of “Year of Yes,” an NC bookclub read, and several other shows will be making the switch to Netflix after 10+ years with ABC to pursue more creative freedom and flexibility in her storytelling.
The move is an “opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation” Rhimes said in a statement. She went on to say that “the future of Shondaland at Netflix has limitless possibilities.”
Major props to Netflix for bringing the #GOAT on board.
I am excited to see where this partnership leads and can only imagine the level of viewership that Netflix is about to achieve. This is huge news also, since Disney just recently announced they will be pulling all of their content from Netflix in order to pursue their own streaming service. As the battle for online television occurs, I’m standing with Netflix. Plus, who knows what original content Shonda is planning to create that I will instantly become obsessed with.
Let’s all stay afloat on this, and let me know if any of you want to meet for Shonda marathons. I’ll bring the wine, Gladiators!!
How do you feel about the switch? Let us know in the comments.
