In case you missed it, NaturallyCurly partnered with Essence at the inaugural Fashion House NYC event to celebrate black beauty, fashion and natural hair. Of course, we had to close the show in the most epic way possible with Texture on the Runway. From voluminous mohawks to innovative updos, the stunning natural hairstyles definitely stole the show.
New York City-based hairstylist, Stephen Seven Knows, created the head turning hairstyles and said each style was inspired by art. According to an interview with Essence, he explained “A lot of my inspiration comes from various realms of art,” shared Hudson. “I get inspiration from textures.” And while we don’t typically see the kinky and curly kind on the runway, models strutted down the catwalk doing both of the hair patterns at last night’s spectacular.

Texture on the Runway is a signature event that was originally created to spotlight the versatility of natural hair during NYFW and it’s so important to create spaces where we are celebrated as a culture. “I think it’s extremely important to have conventions and hair shows. It’s another way of showing unity for our culture. Hair shows bring us together and allow us to be expressive with our hair,” said Hudson.
Let’s get into these showstopping hairstyles that will be sure to inspire your next style.
