Wash and Prep
Start with washed and detangled hair. Plop with a t-shirt or microfiber cloth for up to ten minutes. You want wet hair for a sleek finish. If your hair is too wet, then it will take forever to dry. Next, section your hair into four parts. I subsequently start at the nape with subsections no more than two inches in diameter. For each subsection I douse my hair in Elasta QP’s Mango Butter and then an alcohol free clear hair gel. The mango butter provides moisture that lasts throughout the week and the gel allows the hair to set firm and soft, so that all this work does not go to waste in 2-3 days.
Roll it up
The flexi rods I use vary depending on the look I am going for. Larger flexi rods are best used for the back sections of the hair, while the smaller ones can be used for the front sections. For this flexi rod set I used sixteen large 1 inch flexi rods on the back half of my hair, two on the bottom of the front sections and then eight 3/4 inch purple flexi rods on the front sections of my hair, parted in the middle.
There are two rolling techniques I use with flexi rods. With the first technique hold the roller near at the root and begin winding the hair around the remainder of the roller. The other technique is to hold the roller on your ends, wind it up toward the root, and fold to secure.
Dry
My waist length hair requires at least two hours under a hooded dryer. Everyone is different so please use your discretion. Your hair should be 100% dry before removing the flexi rods, otherwise your hair will frizz if it is still damp. Another option is to sleep in the flexi rods but really, does this look like a comfortable night’s sleep? It is not. I have tried it several times and it is definitely worth waiting under a dryer to make this style work.
Remove roller and separate curls
Carefully remove the flexi rods one at a time. Give your hair some body and to kick this style up a few notches separate each of my flexi rod curls into 2-3 sections and re-roll each with my finger so they keep their form. Next, pick it and shake it out.
Add extra hold
I like to spray my hair with hair spray, like this one by Tresemme. This is about the only style I use hair spray for but I need the extra hold. This will ensure it does not get frizzy and that the curls stay indestructible when you pineapple at night to go to sleep or when you are lounging around the house.
I love this style and here’s why: it lasts all week, it looks fantastic, and for just 2-3 hours of your time during the week, you do not have to worry about doing your hair all week long.
