Texture on the Runway put sustainable fashion, glamour, texture, and ballroom at the forefront of the runway during Beautycon earlier this month. ESSENCE Content Director Nandi Howard hosted the elaborate event that saw a diverse array of models strut their stuff on a neon catwalk. Each of the models sported jumpsuits, two-piece outfits, jackets, and dresses in vibrant patterns and ombre colored designs by BruceGlen.
As a celebration of Black culture and natural hair, Texture on the Runway shows the beauty of blending high end fashion with coily and tighter textures. Audience members were treated to jaw-dropping hairstyles like floor-length box braids, regal afros, and textured updos that showed the versatility and beauty of natural hair. Models of different body types, textures, and gender sashayed down the catwalk and wowed the crowd with vibrant looks and styles that would even rival fashion week.
Texture on the Runway had incredible energy: from the announcer and vibrant clothes all the way down to the next-level hair. I loved that show incorporated a variety of textures and looks including floor-length box braids, wigs, blonde-dipped pony tails and so much more. It made me excited to switch up my look and reminded me once again of the beauty and versatility of Black hair– we can truly rock anything!- Akili King, Senior Beauty Director at Essence
Celebrity hairstylists Tater Pazon and Mandy D. Williams were the dynamic duo pairing the beautiful waves, kinky curls, and tight coils with the 1970s retro-inspired style of clothing. The blend of natural hair textures and colorful luxury clothing from BruceGlen lit up the Beautycon stage with a clear message, our textures are here to stay and we’ll celebrate them. Texture on The Runway wouldn’t be complete without a showstopping performance to close out the show and the House of Balenciaga exthued confidence and showmanship with a Vogue performance.
“Texture on the Runway was an amazing experience for being able to see diverse and extremely unique styles for both hair and clothing. It was an honor to be able to be a judge for something so special! –Justice Jackson, Social Media Influencer
