Brrr… It’s time to bundle up!
One of the most important accessories you’ll need this season is a nice, cozy hat. Wool is often the go-to option for obvious reasons. Even so, this über warm fabric can cause unwanted damage to your hair…
While they serve an important purpose, wool winter hats can cause breakage from friction. Ever have a wool turtleneck or scarf that you wore pretty often and notice later on that the hair at the nape of your head is thinning out? Mmhhmm… friction! Also, much like cotton, wool absorbs moisture from your hair… this, as we know, can eventually lead to breakage. So look for hats with satin or silk linings.
Now, don’t go throwing out the wool hats you already own to run to the mall for those that are satin-lined! Who has that kinda dough?! If you’re a DIY-er, all ya gotta do is head to the fabric store and pick up a bit of silk or satin fabric {scrap bin = money-saver!} to sew into your head covering of choice. Here’s a nice tutorial by fellow blogger Discovering Natural.
Not much of a seamstress? Welp, ya know those satin bonnets and scarves that you wear to bed? Just rock one of those bad boys under the hat! Easy peasy. Not only will you be protecting your hair from the fabric but you’ll be preserving your style!
Going forward, be careful with your hat choices. Check the label! Polyester and acrylic are pretty safe. I own one hat that doesn’t even have a label O_O. Since I haven’t the slightest idea what it’s made of, I make sure I always have my satin scarf underneath as a buffer. Better safe than sorry!
The moral of the story, chickadees, is that you don’t have to sacrifice your hair health for warmth! You can accomplish both with this simple tip.
