Your curls don’t want to behave despite your pineappling overnight? Refreshing them on second and third days with a water-conditioner mix doesn’t give you the desired results? If this is the case, I would like to show you another heatless method to easily revive second-day, or even third-day, curls. This method works for any hair type, and any length. Achieving great second day curls doesn’t have to be difficult.
What you’ll need:
- Bobby pins
- A styling product
How I refresh my hair with pin-curls
My revival method to re-clump my curls definitely reduces the amount of frizz they have, too. I also get more volume at the same time. This is how to do it:
1. Grab a little hair strand
Don’t take too many curls, as this will define the size of your clumps. If you grab the same size of section each time, it will help your curls look uniform in the end.
2. Take a little bit of your styler (only a drop”>
I used the Moptop Anti-Frizz Gel (medium hold”>, but you can use any type of styling product that leaves you with a gel cast when dry.
3. Evenly spread the styler along the section of hair you’ve selected.
Make sure your curls are covered with gel, from the roots to the ends.
4. Start twisting it around your index finger until your finger reaches your scalp.
As this is rather difficult to explain, I have previously done a video on how exactly I twist my curls around my index finger.
I was inspired by this DevaCurl method. Since my hair type is different from the model I added a couple of steps to help maintain the curl definition.

5. Adjust
Remove your finger and fix the section with a bobby pin as soon as you have reached your scalp.
6. Repeat
Continue to do this with every section that appears to be frizzy or has lost its curl pattern.
You do not have to twirl and pin all of your hair; I recommend focusing on the top layer of hair around your part. If you see other curls here and there that need reshaping, you can twist and pin them too.
7. Leave your bobby pins in for about 2-3 minutes before taking them out.
Don’t worry if these sections are curlier that the rest of your hair, I will talk about how to deal with this in the next step.
8. Gently stretch the sections
Stretch each section just a bit by running your fingers from your scalp to the ends, approximately five times (or more, depending on how much straighter your sections need to get”>, if they are curlier than other parts of your hair.
9. Volumize!
Finish by scrunching and shaking your curls, if you like more volume.
And just like that, you’re done!
