In this mini-series, we will spotlight our artists and what drives them to do what they love.
Introduce yourself
Hi, My name is Keturah Ariel Nailah Bobo, I’m a visual artist/designer from the Midwest and I’m very honored to be featured on NaturallyCurly!
How did you first get introduced to art?
Honestly I don’t have any memories prior to being an artist, but I was introduced to art as a toddler when I was homeschooled by my mom. As early as I can remember, I knew being an artist was who I was born to be.
What is your “signature” artistic style? What does everyone know you for?
My signature style is relatable. It’s difficult for me to say I have one particular visual style, but my goal as an artist is to relate to the people who view and appreciate my art. I want people to know that they are not alone by making them feel comfortable with who they are.
What are some things you have learned creating art for a living?
I’ve learned that I cannot have a regular life, lol. Everything that I need as an artist cannot be achieved by chasing standard aspirations and traditions. Maybe the idea of what an “American Dream” is has changed, but prince charming, white picket fences, and 9-5 jobs don’t entice me. I have learned to let go of ideals and to further embrace the path the Creator has chosen for me. If you dedicate yourself fully to your innate abilities, you will be successful.
Do you have a favorite piece of artwork that you have created?
My favorite piece right now is probably the “Beasts of the Southern Wild” inspired piece titled “Home.” I was able to capture the essence of the moment and as an artist that’s my goal. Many people who have never seen the film have identified with that painting, by connecting with the emotion expressed without knowing the story. It’s a powerful image of strength displaying comfort amidst chaos.
What is one thing you wish people knew about you as a person?
I wish people knew that I don’t necessarily like sharing the conceptual ideas behind my work. I think everyone has a right to draw their own conclusion without my biased opinion. Art talks to everyone differently and what you receive from it may not be the same as the artist’s intention but that doesn’t make your opinion any less valid. However, if someone asks, of course I don’t mind sharing. I truly love everyone who supports me and I feel an obligation to them, I always will.
What are your passions? What excites you?
I’m excited about the future, and nothing excites me more than another way to visually communicate something that needs to be expressed. So many people have approached me because they want to see representations of themselves in the world. It’s such a simple task but it’s something I am fully capable of creating by painting or illustrating. And it’s really just a bonus that I LOVE to do it.
