Fall is here, fall is here! That means throw away everything you used this summer, and start fresh with a brand new set of products! Just kidding. No really, I am.
Although temperatures are dropping and the air is getting more frigid, that doesn’t mean you need to overcomplicate your regimen and bombard your already-full product stash with more goods. The truth is, to make it through fall, all you need is 5 really good products. Five really good, multi-faceted products.
1. All Purpose Oil or Butter
In the colder months, retaining moisture is of paramount importance. But doing so can be a little tricky. Some of our beloved oils and butters that tend to congeal and harden when cold (think about what happens to your coconut oil in summer vs. winter”> can make our hair feel dry and hard when in fact, it is the nature of the oil or butter itself. To remedy this, an all-purpose oil or butter that maintains softness or liquidity even as temperatures drop is a fall staple. Jojoba oil is perfect for this time of year. It can be used to pre-poo, massage the scalp, seal in moisture, for hot oil treatments, and as a finishing serum for shine. An excellent butter option is Kyra Shea Medley’s Original Butter Cream, as it is made with aloe vera, avocado butter, and jojoba oil. And it smells amazing too!
2. A Gentle, Yet Effective Shampoo with Slip
Shampoos that don’t strip the hair are more commonplace than ever, which has more ladies switching back to the lathery stuff. TGIN Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo is an excellent option for gently cleansing the hair while removing buildup, creating slip, and not drying the hair out in the slightest. Another great option is Ouidad Superfruit Renewal Clarifying Cream Shampoo. Both cleansers are gentle, sulfate-free, have great lather, and fight frizz.
3. A Moisture/Protein Balancing Deep Conditioner
Although you should be concerned about balancing moisture and protein levels in your hair year-round, maintaining them is especially important in the drier months. Cold air zaps the moisture from your hair, so a water-based treatment with emollients, butters and oils is necessary to replenish the dehydration. At the same time, your hair needs to be strong enough to withstand the gentle tugs of protective styling, and loose hair needs to be able to bounce back from rubbing against jackets and sweaters. To maintain your moisture and protein balance while infusing your hair with essential amino acids that will improve elasticity and strength, try Hydratherma Naturals Amino Plus Protein Deep Conditioner or ApHogee Curlific Texture Treatment.
4. A Leave-In for the Ages
If you follow the LOC, LCO, LCB, or LBC, you’ll be delighted to know that for the colder months, there’s a possibility that you can do away with adding a cream-based moisturizer to the mix on wash day (and save it for day 2 or 3 when you need to do a little refreshing”>. Skip the moisturizing creams by using a heavier leave-in that provides tons of hydration, mixed with butters and oils for softness and moisture retention. Or, use your heavier cream as a leave-in! Products like Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea All-Natural Leave-In Conditioner, Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner, Soultanicals Fluffalicious Curl Nutricious, and Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream are perfect for this.
5. Multipurpose Styler
Can your favorite curl definer or twist-out cream stand up to a wash and go, slick your edges for a top knot, or provide enough hold for a perm rod set? If your holding or defining product isn’t as versatile as the styles you seek to do, it might be time to swap it out for something more flexible. Products like Obia Curl Enhancing Custard and (new”> Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker are excellent options for slicking hair back, preserving chunky or mini twists, roller/rod sets, and wash and go’s. They contain gentle, good for hair ingredients that won’t dry it out, make it unbelievably hard, or flake. Oh, and they slay frizz.
Remember ladies, transitioning your regimen throughout the seasons doesn’t have to be difficult. Make your swaps easier on your wallet, and your time by avoiding “do too much syndrome”.
