You know you’re a natural if… you have a collection of hair oils.
The reason we love them so much is because they are excellent at sealing in moisture, giving shine and soothing our scalps. But did you also know that they can act as sunscreens and cleansers for our scalp and hair? Unfortunately, if you’re using the same old oils like coconut and olive, you’re bound to get bored. Why not mix it up with these new and exciting hair oils that are really taking the beauty industry by storm?
1. Macadamia oil
Macadamia oil is amazing due to its ability to closely mimic sebum, the natural oil found in the scalp that moisturizes the hair. The macadamia nut which the oil is extracted from contains palmitoleic acid which is the main ingredient in sebum. When applied to the hair and scalp, macadamia oil helps to supply the hair with the sebum that our hair is missing from insufficient production or damage. You can use it to moisturize and strengthen even the driest hair without worrying about oiliness as it is easily absorbed by the hair and skin.
Macadamia oil can be used on its own or in products including the Carols Daughter macadamia line and Finicky Moisturizing Butter.
2. Argan oil
Argan oil is another amazing, but rare, oil that has been dubbed the miracle oil and liquid gold. It has long since been used by the Moroccans to achieve long healthy hair and has now gained international recognition. Argan oil is rich in vitamin E, omega 9, linoleum, oleic acid, unsaturated fatty acids and phytosterols, and is very light weight and easily absorbed by the hair. But what makes argan oil so special is its ability to strengthen the hair and prevent split ends. It can also act as a sunscreen, prevent dandruff and premature hair thinning and moisturize and smooth the hair to prevent frizz.
Argan oil can be found in many of our all natural hair care products, including AG Hair Cosmetics Smooth Sleeek Argan Conditioner, Curl Junkie Beauticurls Argan & Olive Oil Daily Hair Conditioner, Karen’s Body Beautiful Secret Weapon Restorative Hair Treatment, Kinky-Curly PERFECTLY POLISHED and many more.
3. Flax seed oil
Omega 3 fatty acid nourishes the follicles of the hair for healthy hair growth that is strong and shiny. Flax seed oil has one of the highest concentrations of omega 3 making it perfect for those who want to add more shine to lackluster dull hair. The great thing about this oil is that you can apply it to your hair or take a daily dosage, which is great for women whose hair is easily weighed down by oil.
Some products that contain this wonder oil are Curly Q’s Curly Q Gel-lesíc, Oyin Handmade Frank Juice and Original Moxie Mane Tame Weightless Frizz Control
4. Mongongo oil
Mongongo is an oil derived from the nut of the fruit of the tree found in the Kalahari Desert in Angola Africa. What makes this oil incredible is the two acids which are present in it in high concentrations: linoleic and eleostaeric acid. Linoleic acid is found in concentrations as high as 30-54% and is beneficial in the regeneration of the hair. Eleostaeric acid reacts with UV light to create polymerization, which acts as a natural sunscreen for the hair to prevent damage.
Mongongo oil can be found in the Original Sprout Luscious Island Conditioner and Ouidad Mongongo Oil Multi-Use Hair Treatment.
5. Palm oil
Palm oil is a unique oil that not only contains tocotrienol, a member of the vitamin E family, but also D and K- vitamins found in no other oils. Also it is commonly used as a cure for dandruff through simply oiling the scalp daily.
One product which contains palm oil is Mop C-System Finishing Paste.
6. Plumeria oil
This oil is a fresh smelling oil derived from the Plumeria flowers found in Hawaii. Although the chemical makeup of this oil may not seem as impressive as the oils listed above, it still makes the list as its scent is often used for aromatherapy. Using this oil right before bed will not only soften your tresses, but should help you get a good night’s rest too.
You can find plumeria oil in Curls Whipped Cream.
Now that you know of the latest and greatest new hair oils, get your credit card ready and let your inner product junkie out to play. However, just make sure that the oils you purchase are pure.
As always remember to have love peace and curly haired bliss.
