If you weren’t able to make it to Brooklyn for this year’s Curlfest 2022, we won’t lie–you missed the kind of street style and festival fun that you won’t get anywhere else. But, of course, we would never leave you hanging. NaturallyCurly was on the scene capturing the inspo-worthy hairstyles to report back to you on must-see natural hair moments and bold looks.
What is Curlfest?
Considering the immense following of this event, it’s hard to believe it was formed less than a decade ago. Curly Girl Collective’s ninth annual celebration of Black women and natural beauty took place this past Saturday at the LeFrak Center in Prospect Park, taking the form of a throwback dance/skate party called Curlfest RollerSet. The nostalgic extravaganza also featured a marketplace selling and giving away beauty-focused goodies, food vendors, and DJ’s. At its core, Curlfest was created to challenge the historical narratives the beauty industry has pushed onto Black and Brown women concerning their natural appearance and culture. Read more on the Curlfest origin story here.
We might not be able to recreate the sense of community felt among festival goers, the amazing DJ’s, or the product giveaways, but we’re more than happy to cure a bit of FOMO with the following photos. Feast your eyes on these joyful festival moments for the first time, or for those who were there in the flesh, scroll on to experience the magic all over again.
Braids
Braids have had us mesmerized all summer long, and Saturday was full of box braids, cornrows, and everything in between.
Free-Flowing Curls
It’s a well-known fact that sometimes, less is more. And at an event celebrating natural beauty, free-flying curls and afros standing tall were incredibly popular style choices.
Locs
There was no shortage of loc love on display. Take a look at some au naturale locs and even a jumbo faux loc moment with pearl accessories.
Curly Cuts
Getting the perfect haircut is one of the most satisfying parts of having textured hair. Festival attendees stepped out sporting their finest short cuts.
