As we sit in the midst of winter it can be easy for our curls to dry out and even start looking a little dull. 1. Beer
All hair has damaged cuticles that make your hair look dull and dry. Beer has a protein that can fill any space between the damaged areas, but unfortunately drinking beer doesn’t quit do the trick.
Grab a bottle of beer (maybe one that won’t make you sad when you see it going down the drain”> and step into the shower. Pour the beer from your roots to your ends and let it sit for a minute or two. Make sure you rinse with cool water after it sits to get rid of the smell and seal in the proteins.

2. Hats
Wind can be harsh on your curls during the winter months, but hats can be a great way to stay warm as well as moisturized. Anytime it’s cold and windy make sure you have a hat to carry with you wherever you go so you don’t have to worry about your curls drying out.
Don’t think hats are for you or you’re having trouble finding one you like? Hats and curls go great together as well as as long as you find the perfect hat for you.

3. Baking Soda
Product build-up is a major cause of dull hair and baking soda is great for removing build-up as well as washing away water impurities.
Mix ¼ cup of water with 1 tablespoon of baking soda until you have a paste. When you’re in the shower, smooth the mixture onto wet hair and use a wide-toothed comb to spread it through you curls (or use your fingers if you don’t comb”>. Then rinse with cool water and shampoo or condition as you normally would.
4. Water Filter
Mineral count and chlorine level in local water supplies can drastically change your hair and what products you can use. If you have spent time swimming in a chlorinated pool, you know how drying the chemical can be. The U.S. has regulated the chlorine levels in water, but it is still high in larger cities.
The easiest way to avoid this stripping of your hair is to get a filter for your shower. They are more expensive than your everyday water filter, but the health and beauty benefits outweigh the cost. Aquasana is a company that believes everyone should have a high standard of water for drinking as well as for showering: two of the most important things in life!
5. Shine Specific Products
If you want something extremely simple that can add shine back to your hair, simply look for products that are made to do just that. Many product lines like DevaCurl, Carol’s Daughter and Oyin have all come out with new products that will add the shine back to your curls.
Keep in mind, if you’re using these products they can cause build-up so make sure you use a good shampoo and deep condition after a few days of use.
