4 Surprising Reasons Your Hair is Losing Volume

One of the frequently asked questions in our Curly Q&A section from looser textures is regarding volume. This is also a common desire for those with low density hair. Everyone wants volume! Regardless of hair type, anyone can desire more volume, and if you have a looser texture, here are four unexpected reasons why your curls may be falling flat.

You are retaining length

When it comes to having a looser texture, the more length you retain, the more gravity will affect your volume. This is why a haircut is always the best solution, whether your stylist advises you to get layers or rock a shorter look. More body and movement usually comes with shorter lengths.

You are co-washing

When co-washing with either daily conditioners or cleansing conditioners, your hair will be weightier in comparison to using shampoos. Their rich formulations are chock-full of conditioning properties that are left on their hair to make it softer. If you want to maintain your hair’s moisture without losing volume, then try this: co-wash less frequently, try a thinner cleansing conditioner, or try a moisturizing shampoo.

If you co-wash, consider doing it no more than once a week, especially if you do not clarify regularly. Many women with curly hair have benefited much from cleansing conditioners, so maybe you should find that better suites your texture. Check out the Ouidad Curl Immersion Co-wash Cleansing Conditioner. Co-washing tends to weigh the hair day, especially for looser textures, so maybe using a moisturizing shampoo is a better option to cleansing your hair without stripping it of moisture.

You are using heavy products

Believe it or not, you are not the only woman with curly hair who craves volume. Sometimes it is a matter of switching products. Liquid moisturizers or leave-in conditioners may be more fitting for your curls than creams and butters. For styling products, search for YouTubers with your texture who can provide guidance. Although all styling creams and gels dry differently, look for the holding strength of the packaging of the product to better guide your selections.

You are air-drying

Consider using a blow-dryer with a diffuser attachment. Consistently shoveling the hair upward with a blow-dryer as it dries will help to set the curls in place. For even more volume try putting double prong clips at the roots. Don’t have clips, flip your head upside down and dry it that way that. Remember to use the dryer on low heat to prevent too much moisture depletion and low speed to reduce the amount of frizz.

How do you achieve volume with your loose curls?
