Black and Disruptive: Afropunk is Changing the Festival Marketplace
By · Updated August 24, 2017

Festival marketplaces are meant to do one thing: allow concert vendors the opportunity to showcase and sell their wares to festival attendees.

Some of the most innovative brands and corporate sponsors hold sway in the festival marketplaces across the world. While that may be a fantastic thing for big business, casting wide ad campaign and activation nets across demographics, vending is a challenge for smaller brands, businesses local to the festival site area, and Black- and People of Color-owned businesses.

Afropunk – Brooklyn has changed all of that with its Spinthrift Market.

Located inside of the festival grounds, Spinthrift will host vendors from New York, California, West Africa, and beyond.

By offering international wares alongside American-made products, the Spinthrift Market is disrupting what festival goers are used to – same old, mass produced offerings. More than 75% of the featured vendors are Black and people of color, with many of those being women.

From handmade accessories to contemporary fashions made from Kente cloth, the Spinthrift market will feature the best artisans and craftspeople from the African Diaspora.

Click images of featured vendors below to learn more about the owners, their mission, and the wares they create that are making Spinthrift Market the place to be this summer.

Note: This editorial features vendors NaturallyCurly Editor Gerilyn Hayes is planning to throw her hard earned dollars at because OMG, these wares are lit af. The editorial and blatant favoritism are of her own penning. She is not receiving compensation from the vendors to promote their business. She just loves them and wants to buy all of the things.

Venture to Spinthrift Market on Saturday, August 26 and Sunday, August 27 to experience this dynamic marketplace!

The festival goes down on Saturday, August 26 to Sunday, August 27.

We can’t wait to see you there!
